Behind the jokes and badassness, Captain Marvel is a fascinating character to me, because of how death follows her.

She causes an explosion. That explosion, which gives her powers and her immortality, canonically kills her. The Kree Empire resurrects her and makes her as Kree as they can. She shares Yon-Rogg's blood and his life, she's his creation, she's his victim, she's the one who causes his downfall, she's the one that destroys the system, the society, the planet that allowed her to be abused.

It's the Kree that see her as a killer and Annihilator. She's a monster of their own making, but it influences every species and planet she touches. Her victories cause death and her mistakes cause more death. Carol's triumph, the death of the Supreme Intelligence, results in the death of probably millions of Kree, and by consequence, almost causes the death of Hala's star.

"I'm only human" Carol says, before killing the Empire that is the reason that she can't ever be human again.

"We'll be back for the weapon," Ronan says, but that weapon will kill everything he stands for.

"Your life began the day it nearly ended," The Supreme Intelligence says, coldly, calculatingly. It's an AI. It doesn't have a good concept of death. It doesn't fully grasp that Carol had genuinely been killed that day, because she's still in front of it. Carol kills it.

"Death seems to follow you," Dar-Benn says, before she causes an explosion with the bangles, trying to defeat Carol. The explosion kills Dar-Benn.

Death follows Carol. Death follows Carol! Mar-Vell is dead. Maria is dead. Talos is dead. Soren is dead. Ronan is dead. Minn-Erva is dead. Korath is dead. Dar-Benn is dead. Yon-Rogg is, probably, dead. The Supreme Intelligence is dead. Natasha is dead. Tony is dead.

The only people in Carol's life who aren't dead are Kamala, Monica, Yan, Valkyrie, and Fury.

She watches helplessly as Dar-Benn almost murders Kamala after Kamala tries to save Dar-Benn's life, tries to find a way to solve the violence without death.

She watches helplessly as Monica gets torn into another reality, which for all she knows, she could die in. The tear in reality that was caused by Dar-Benn's death.

She tries to hide Yan's existence from her friends and tries to warn him and his people. The Kree soldiers aren't fighting to maim, they're fighting to kill. He escapes death by his own fighting skills and the fact that the Kree would rather focus on killing Carol than him.

Valkyrie and Carol interact once, and she only calls when she needs help after a fight, not during. Think about it. Valkyrie and the Bifrost could have helped the trio enormously. But Carol doesn't call until the fights are over. It would be very easy for a regular Asgardian warrior to die compared to superhumans.

And Fury... have you seen how often Fury comes close to dying? He's alive from skill and luck. He is lucky that he isn't dead.

Captain Marvel is so, so fascinating. Her story begins with her own death, and the more it goes on, the more death happens around her. Nobody is safe. She causes almost all of them, even the ones of her friends - not directly, but through the consequences of her actions. The consequences of her victories and mistakes. The consequences of her anger and revenge, her power and powerlessness. It is caused by both the Human and Kree sides of her, by both Carol and Vers, Captain Marvel and the Annihilator.

Carol is immortal. She can't die. And death follows her anyway.

look, guys, i know that farleigh isn't the main character in saltburn and is supporting cast at best, but truth is—i’d loved if they’d explored the queer and racial aspects of his character because there’s a lot of material there that they could’ve worked with. god, how i would’ve loved if they’d just given him five more minutes of screen time for that. but just like in the plot, no one really cares about farleigh, do they? because it’s not his story and it’s not his house.

but like- theres just so much to say about a queer and colored character in 2006-2007, y’know? at that point in time, being queer and colored was still seen as horrible and something to make fun of. and, like, farleigh is so extra, somewhat effeminate and just downright scandalously fashionable for an era where men were severely toxically masculine and wore double popped collars and relatively simple clothes. i’m sorry but… you’re telling me that nobody ever said anything about this man?

not only that, but he’s a black/mixed man in a predominately white university/space. i mean, huh? people were massively racist in 2006-2007, especially in places like britain (and you can’t tell me otherwise because we all know it’s true).

but, sure, let’s entertain the possibility that he might be in the closet, okay? yeah, whatever, i don’t care. but the doors are glass!! not even opaque glass or something like that, they’re plain see-through, transparent glass doors.

no one, NO ONE said anything? and he’s still popular as fuck just because he was felix’s cousin? people still talked shit about oliver at oxford even when he was felix’s friend but we never heard a single thing about farleigh. and that may be because he wasn’t given enough screen time for that, but it doesn’t matter.

what i’m trying to say is that they had so much material and they wasted it by not making the movie about him.

Nimona (2023) Thought

Someone may have noticed this already but there’s something to be said about Ambrosius and the mixed Asian American experience and the model minority myth. Ambrosius is clearly mixed Asian in the movie, especially given he was literally modeled after and voiced by Eugene Lee Yang (a Korean American) and it is shown that Gloreth, his ancestor, is European white.

Let’s start with his design: his eyebrows are brown, clearly darker than his hair. And his undercut is brown as well, suggesting that blonde is not his natural color. He’s bleached/dyed his hair blonde to resemble Gloreth. He’s being pressured (internally or externally) to play up his white features and remove the characteristics more in line with Asian features (namely, his dark hair). In fact, it’s interesting that no one seems to care about his Asian heritage, all obsessed with the whiteness mixed in his veins. For a mixed Asian person like me, I deeply resonated with feeling pressured about how Asian or how white I appear or am. I’ve been told how unlucky I am to have inherited my fine, white hair even though it’s my Hmong grandmother who has fine hair in the family. Growing up in a mostly white community, I’ve felt so disconnected from my Asian features. They’re exotic or different or unappealing. They’re white or Asian depending on if people like them, dislike them, or want to objectify them.

It’s so compelling, then, to see this same conundrum of Ambrosius in Nimona. First, they adore him as the descendant of Gloreth. However, even in adoration he is surprisingly alone. He and Ballister seem to both be shunned/kept apart from the other knights. People like the idea of Ambrosius and what he stands for, but they don’t like him. They (Todd in particular) quickly then turn on him and accuse him of conspiring with Ballister when things don’t go the kingdom’s way. This is especially interesting because they are playing on suspicion of Ambrosius’s attraction/relationship, queerness being another facet that pulls him from being “acceptable.” Finally, they (the Director) uses him as the figurehead to bring Ballister down, eventually killing him and tossing him aside like a used toy once she could no longer control him (except Nimona tricked her). The message is clear: despite being literally the descendant of their white deity, Ambrosius is still too mixed to be accepted by the kingdom. And at the end of the day, white power structures don’t care how white you appear to be, you’ll be treated like any other oppressed individual the minute it is no longer convenient for those upholding them.

i can feel myself burning out and i am no where near finals season, i still have one more midterm left but trying to stay optimistic that we will remain healthy and energized not let academia wear me down. luckily today because of the snow storm my manager let me take the day off, so i did not need to come into work. i got to do my household errands, a little bit of studying and reading. i thought those "Sunday reset routine" was working for me but i realized i have such limited leisure time on the weekends and i'd like to end my weekend at home just doing something relaxing and leisurely. so i am gonna have my reset admin routine on Thursday evenings. because its when my "school work" is done and on Fridays i resume my work tasks. i'll see of this works better for me
