What if mfb was made in the 90s🤔-this is my first time ever trying to like - replicate an art style (i didnt take one 90s anime to replicate from i used many different screenshots from different animes) so idk😔90s anime is the most visually appealing sht ever to me its like my biggest inspiration even though i dont make that obvious lol. so i’ll probably make more of these in the future🙏
Tumblr media
It was supposed to be a redraw od this scene but it doesnt really look alike (the expression) bcs i was more focused on making it look accurate lol
Tumblr media
Also versions w the effects toned down/turned off
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Here r (some of the) inpso screenshots that i used while making these
First & Second picture: Wicked city (1987)
[i know, 80’s anime lol]
Third picture: Kimera (1997)
Fourth picture: Ai No Kusabi (1990)

Seeing your recent work made me curious as to how you pick your colors? I always feel like mine are too flat.
oh man, COLORS. my angel.....and my devil......
ok im going to try and figure out how to break down my thinking process
i guess the first question is. what do you want your art to feel like? i dont say "look like" cause sometimes i fall into the trap of obsessing over a painting being one for one PERFECT while "feel like" helps me think about atmosphere
heres a some paintings with a few of the inpso color palletes i wanted them to "feel" like
Tumblr media
Heres an example of how i would give myself a jumping off point.
In this homumiko painting i started off by thinking about how i wanted something that feels like a Jules Chéret poster.
Now the next question is. What are the rules to these set of paintings?
the use of pure primary colors, blue tends to be in the bg while yellow and red are the focal point
Tumblr media
for this i wanted only the red dress to be the focal point with yellows being a less saturated and blue still being the bg. this means since herlock is the focal point mikotoba has to be muted. but i wanted to tie him and herlock together so made the flower in his hair the same color as the dress
Meanwhile my lastest otacon is a bit more complicated cause now we're dealing with lighting but again,
what are the rules to this set of nature paintings?
shadow areas are bluer
places where light hits the main figure will be an intense yellow
skin will be redder with darker areas being saturated red/brown and areas closer to the light source start skewing towards yellow
Tumblr media
this is when we start getting into color theory and THAT is a whole nother can of worms. but its extremely helpful when trying to figure out how to add colors that arent in the inspo you picked out or figuring out what the FUCK is happing in pieces like this
Tumblr media
those patches of purples in this are just a very specific type of red/orange grey tones matched in a way to make it feel like its blue. IT MAKES ME WANT TO SCREAM
i actually tried to attempt to figure it out while working on my pin up ryuu piece......
Tumblr media
anyways.....i think im off track now....
i hope that helped a little? I tend to stick to late 1800s/early 1900s art cause thats just my personal preference. so the colors im gonna pick are gonna limited a very specific way (if ur into history its really fun breaking down why certain colors appear in certain time periods and how styles evolved as more paints became readily available. or painting for portraits vs painting for mass printing vs painting for animated movies affects an artists pallete. or maybe u dont give a shit? in that case...ignore this....)

any advice for someone who’s trying to find their own sense of style?
finding ur own style is a never ending process. the obvious things to help guide you would be to find inpso on pinterest, insta, etc. but i think the best thing you can do is really figure out what make you feel the most confident, what colors suit you, what silhouettes, etc. i try not to use social media as inspo too much bc it can really influence you into something that may not truly be “you”. BUT in the same breathe it’s good to experiment and thru trial and error you will find what makes you feel good vs what doesn’t. don’t think of personal style as an aesthetic it should be an extension of your person.

pls tell me all about your fav genres and subgenres of j-fashion 0u0
this may be obvious but egl and gyaru are my favorite,,,
(huge info dump below lmao)
uhm uhm uhm,,, while im not super well educated in lolita's history im p sure its a japanese street style that dates back to the 70's or 80's and like western alternative subcultures it also kind of has its own like? moral purpose. i believe lolita is meant to be against the sexual objectification of women. gyaru has been around about as long i think and has a similar principal.
my favorite substyles in egl are.. basically all of them but idol and 2018-2020 sweet boom era. and as for gyaru theres basically not a style that i dislike but kogal is overrated. i also dont care for the... extreme tans but thats more for moral reasons.
also the sweet boom! oh my god thats so fracking annoying! there was a lot of demand for sweet lolita in recent years. not only did it cause ap to fold over on itself a bit it did cause prices to go threw the roof. especially the demand for 2010's sweet its always a blood bath for a $500 dress thats supposed to be about $250 :/
my favorite egl brands are: AP, innocent world, BTSSB, metamorphose, and honestly a lot more. i love them all. also mmm needs to chill i love mana but ik those dreses are not worth what they sell for.
i dont have a favorite gyaru brand... i honestly need to look into brands that are specifically for gyaru but im so invested in egl rn
and uhm!! u can see most of my dream dresses or outfit inpso on my side blog @strawberryparlour or on my pinterest (@/strawberryparlour)

how you draw so cozy and yummy? ok so how did you come to this style?
omg I don’t know how to answer:)…. My style is a very simplified style.
I’ve been drawing for a few years now and my style has always been inspired by anime and cartoons. older anime are my fav to take Inpso from.
I hope I’ve answered your question! And if I didn’t don’t be afraid to ask again! :D
(sorry 4 the late answer)

Week 6 FRMTVE FEEDBACK
Tumblr media
Today we had the formative presentation. We had a smaller group and were able to talk more about our work which was an advantage. I was happy with how I presented and what I presented. Above sheet is from my critical feedback friend Kannon. It says the following:
Contextual Enquiry - Investigating: Your creative practice links to your community as well as yourself which is really nice to know. Wow you work with so much materials and media so cool!. Love how you appreciate your process.
Research Skills - Communicating: Really clear links to imagery and keywords. Lots of inpso from different areas of creatives! Awesome!
Critical Analysis - Reflecting: You have lots of personal links like your family or music as well as contemporary and local designers that I can see have influenced your works as well.
Synthesis - Intergrating: I thought you had a super fluent presentation and speech. Really clear flow and easy to understand. Enjoyed your Presentation!
From this, I was very happy that I was able to communicate what I wanted. being able to have someone take notes while I am talking and pick up key ideas from what I was saying was reassuring. I very much enjoyed presenting in small groups and being inspired by other people's work.
We were able to ask each other questions and I spoke to Grace about where she found her creative influences. She talked about the Type Directors Club and how she went to an event and it opened her up to a whole new world of creatives she hadn't heard of before. I plan on looking at the type of directors club or even just going to events where creatives are talking or showcasing their work. Going out and finding artists beyond my computer or phone screen.
The presentations made me feel so inspired and excited about the future of creatives. I am itching to make more art and keep adding and evolving my style and likes and dislikes. just play and experiment.

Things I like about your art, proof that it's good and we're not just saying it's good to make you happy (i know a lot of artists get scared of that):
Though character designs don't tend to stick around for long, the constant flow of new and cute concepts makes for great inspiration when making my own characters and keeps things fresh.
Super cute style!
The characters that DO stick around are always top tier and old followers can rejoice seeing an old character get returned to.
Super wacky out there concepts!
And of course, certainly not least, the immense gender envy I get looking at some of them.
awaa, thank you so much!!!
i really appreciate that. i always worry about being unable to stick to one character for long, so it makes me happy to hear that! im glad i can be an inpso!
yes thank u! i luv it when ppl have favorite ocs of mine, but i also feel bad bc my attention span is so bad
also hehe...i also feel gender envy at times at my own ocs
