Tension
read it here as a twitter fic
Kara's intense stare is focused dead ahead, but she can't control the way her body reacts when her hand briefly brushes against Lena's. Her eyes are automatically drawn to the depths of those seafoam eyes at the exact same time that Lena's eyes find hers.
Lena had always been open with her as Supergirl, but there’s a rigidity present in the way she holds herself since she’d been brought into the D.E.O for questioning. Outwardly, she was the picture of calm, but Kara was privy to the messy thundering beats of her heart since they'd accidentally discovered the true identity of Reign in her lab.
There's a brief uptick in its rhythm now when their eyes meet, a curious heat lingering heavy in the space between them. Kara expels a short breath, blaming the extra sensitivity on her brief solar eclipse induced fainting spell a few minutes ago. But that shouldn't cause the tingling sensation climbing up her arm. It's potent and Kara can't help wanting to brush against Lena again with the way that Lena's gaze lingers on her too.
She forces her eyes away, but they betray her in the way that they slide down to the tight fitted form revealed by the elegant cut of Lena's dress. She swallows a rough breath, unwilling to acknowledge the heated flush that paints her cheeks and colors her neck.
Her fingers curl into shaky fists as they quickly walk into the command center and remain clenched as they stand inches apart, listening to the others formulate a plan.
Kara refuses to acknowledge the ache present in her bones as her strength slowly ebbs away. That eclipse being caused by the Worldkillers' ritual was just a minor setback. She stands tall, posturing, expertly fending off the concern of her friends and her sister. It works well, almost too well, and soon they all shuffle out of the room following Brainy as he discusses the complexities of extracting Sam from the Valley of Juru.
A sharp wave of vertigo makes Kara stumble, one that abates slightly when she walks to the far corner of the room, closer to the windows, closer to the slowly eclipsing sun.
“Agent Danvers was right,” Lena says conversationally. Kara startles a bit, now realizing that Lena hadn’t followed the others. Her ears ring as Lena’s voice takes on a tinny quality. “You should have stayed in the medbay.”
"I'm fine." Kara automatically rebuts, lifting her aching head to challengingly lock eyes with Lena.
"Oh? Is that why you look like you're two seconds away from fainting at my feet again?"
Kara prickles, indignation warring in her veins and a rebuttal on her tongue that doesn’t quite make it past her lips when she stumbles, back crashing against the wall behind her. Her vision blurs, breath stuttering for a moment before it comes sharply into focus when the blaze of Lena’s warm hands touch her face. The touch anchors her to reality, to this room, as perspiration beads on her forehead.
“Don’t go to that valley.” Lena insists. “You know you won’t have powers there.”
There’s concern in those seafoam eyes, even after they’d just been arguing about the ethics of Lena having kryptonite. Kara feels a little exposed beneath them, a little too sensitive to hold their challenge.
She’s also slightly alarmed that she didn’t see or hear Lena coming. Her eyes burn, the telltale sign of heat vision rimming her irises and she blinks hard, desperately trying to suppress it as her super hearing detects another faint uptick of Lena’s heartbeat. There's something achingly soft in the layers of those beautiful eyes, something that sparks that magnetic burn of attraction low in Kara’s abdomen.
“I have to go.” She answers resolutely.
A moment passes as they study each other, then Lena’s gaze turns flinty and the softness of concern shutters away beneath the guarded intensity of anger.
“Why are you so stubborn?” She huffs, ripping her hands away from Kara’s face. Kara breathes out sharply, reeling from the sudden loss of contact.
“And you aren’t?” She fires back.
Lena scoffs. "I'm not the one losing control of their powers."
“And I’m not the one using kryptonite in experiments.”
Lena grounds her teeth, a vein flickering in her jaw and Kara clamps her mouth shut.
“I told you that I did it for a friend.” Lena stiffens, lifting her chin. “And I’d do it again.”
"Kryptonite can kill me." Kara points out. "What did you expect me to think?"
"That I only used it to subdue Reign."
Kara's jaw tenses and she struggles to stand completely upright, grasping onto the ledge at the window for support. She doesn’t expect Lena to immediately step back into her space, concern etched in the pretty layers of her eyes even as indignation lingers heavy in them. The heat of her curves press into Kara’s side as she slips an arm around her waist in assistance. Kara’s face burns, but she lets her arm fall around Lena’s shoulders so that she can manage to stay upright.
But before she can butt in to continue her argument, Lena continues.
"Minutes before the briefing you fell in a dead faint at my feet and for a few seconds everyone in here thought I was suspect number one."
Kara deflates at the worry that shakes in Lena's voice, even as the implications of her words wound her.
"So you tell me, Supergirl, if you were me, would you be able to trust anyone in this building?"
"I trusted you, Lena." Kara answers. “I vouched for you.”
“Not enough, evidently." Lena grits out, and Kara realizes belatedly that she’s leaning a little more heavily into her as Lena’s other hand reaches out to curl in tight over Kara's shoulder where it bunches in her cape.
One little graze of Lena's fingers directly against her skin is enough to burn Kara. She's not exactly sure what's happening, why all of a sudden she can't control the urge to be closer, but the spicy notes of Lena's perfume hangs heavy in the air and Kara can't help but imagine her mouth pressed to that freckle on her neck. She clears her throat, mentally trying to clear those thoughts away when Lena tries, and fails, to drag her away from the wall.
"What are you doing?"
"Taking you to the medbay." She huffs, that vein in her forehead making an appearance as she considers Kara. They square off in a stare that ends with Lena straightening her posture and sticking her nose in the air. “Fine, then. I’m getting Agent Danvers,” she announces, detangling herself from Kara’s embrace.
Kara reacts immediately, sliding an arm around Lena’s waist and pulling her back in. Lena stumbles in her impressive expensive heels,  hands landing firmly on the glyph on Kara’s chest. Their eyes meet and Lena flushes deeply, a pretty color that stains her beautiful ivory skin. Kara’s eyes get stuck there a moment too long for Lena not to notice.
"No." Kara manages to find her voice to say.
"Let go of me."
"You're gonna make them bench me."
"You're incorrigible!"
"And you're trying to get me taken off this mission."
Lena shoves against her chest, the warmth of her curves still solidly molded to Kara's. "You can't even stand without support!"
"It'll go away."
“And what if it doesn’t? There’s a fucking solar eclipse outside and -”
“I’m aware.”
"You're such an unbelievably stubborn, arrogant, egotistical…."
"Don’t hold back now."
"...idiot!" Lena huffs, pressing in hard against the glyph on Kara's chest.
"Yeah well why do you care what I do?" Kara fires back, annoyance slithering up her spine as Lena's frustration leaks out in an annoyed little huff.
"I don't," she insists, pointing an accusing finger against Kara's chest. "I just don't want to be here when you fall on your stupid, handsome face again and they accuse the nearest Luthor of killing you."
"Well you don't have to be here wh -" Kara stops abruptly, the words now registering in her brain.
Her eyes widen as Lena's heartbeat spikes like she hadn't meant to say that. Kara can't help the quiet delighted chuckle that falls from her lips.
"You think I'm handsome?" She asks, a smug smile curving the corners of her mouth.
Lena growls in frustration, reaching up to tangle her fingers in her hair.
"Listen here, you overgrown space puppy –"
"That's handsome overgrown space puppy to you." Kara snickers.
The fingers in Kara's hair clench tight against her scalp. "I should have just let you fall."
Kara winces, even more alarmed that she could feel the pain from Lena's tight hold. But not enough to stop goading her, if only to keep her close, to revel in the addictive scent of honeysuckle clinging to her skin and the warmth of her body pressed so closely to Kara's.
"Oh? But then you'd miss out on our banter.” Kara teases. “This is how we connect now, Lena."
Lena raises an eyebrow. "The only thing I'd love to connect is my fist to your pretty face."
"Handsome and pretty. You seem awfully fond of my face."
"Shut up!" Lena huffs and Kara’s eyes are automatically drawn to her fluttering pulse as she stubbornly tilts her chin. Her eyes narrow dangerously but Kara just smiles, tightening her hold around her waist.
“Make me.” She goads, unable to help herself from pressing in a little closer.
She hears the light hitch in Lena's voice, feels her warm breath stutter against her skin and finally notices the dangerous glint in her wide blown pupils. Kara wants to kiss her, she realizes belatedly, she wants to kiss her best friend. Lena’s eyes are so mesmerizing and they fixate on Kara's mouth when she drags her tongue across her lower lip.
And then, Lena loses it.
Before Kara can form a coherent thought, Lena’s mouth crashes into her own, a hungry torrent that draws her in like a moth to a flame. Her hands catch on Lena’s slender hips as the kiss deepens, a raging inferno of want that Kara hadn’t realized lay beneath the surface. Her mouth is impossibly warm and so soft, Kara can't get enough of her kisses. It's downright scary how much it excites her, how her stomach tumbles over itself and that buzz between her thighs pulses with electric heat. Lena’s lips are liquid fire, awakening a fierce need within Kara.
Her skin feels like it’ll burst apart from the heat of Lena’s body but she can’t seem to care. She’s Icarus, flying too close to the sun as she dips forward, meeting her in the throes of another kiss. The fingers in Kara's hair slacken and Kara deepens the kiss, a devastating dance that slithers like a heated caress through her body.
Lena groans, a sound that vibrates against Kara’s mouth as she clings tighter to Kara’s cape, kissing her with a needy passion that surprises Kara with its intensity. There’s nothing soft about this kiss as it merges into another, but it's warm and wet and Kara’s already too far gone at the skillful way that Lena’s tongue parts her lips.
Kara breaks it too soon to gulp in air that she doesn’t need, overwhelmed by the intensity as her hands reach up to rid Lena’s hair of that tight ponytail. Her eyes are hazy with want, lips red and tempting and Kara wants, oh she wants so feverently her heart is ready to burst.
Lena’s hands smooth down the material of her supersuit to settle on the crest of the House of El and she lets out a soft growl, dipping forward to bite down harshly on the column of Kara's neck. Kara arches against her, a hollow whimper parting her lips as Lena's tongue drags over her sensitive skin to soothe the burn. Kara uses the brief reprieve to switch their positions.
Lena stumbles beneath her and Kara really didn't think this through as Lena’s back smacks hard against the cold wall behind. Kara’s hands land just a few inches from her face, digging finger indentations on either side and trapping Lena between the heated cradle of her hips. There's surprise in those electric eyes, eyes that blatantly stare back at her until Kara breaks it in favor of leaning in to press a kiss to the column of Lena’s throat. Lena’s breath hitches when Kara’s lips teases against her skin and she whimpers, a sound that Kara wants to hear again.
Kara presses in softly, lips dragging against the delicate line of her jaw. Lena breathes out a wispy sigh, heartbeat loud in Kara's ears and Kara nuzzles in closer as Lena's fingers comb through her hair.
"Lena." Kara breathes out. Lena hums, a tiny sound that vibrates against Kara's mouth. She presses kisses against the hollow of her throat, mouthing at that freckle she's been so distracted by, tracing the silky softness of Lena's skin.
Kara’s hands drop to her hips, as her leg slides absentmindedly between Lena’s parted thighs, drawing a stuttered breath from Lena as her kisses move along the curve of her reddened cheek.
Everything about Lena is so addictive. Kara leans forward, pressing their foreheads together. She can't get enough of the softness of her skin, the warmth of her lips and the enticing scent of jasmine clinging to her shiny soft hair. The way she grinds against Kara's thigh sends sparks of arousal through her and she's never felt this turned on in her life.
Her hands slide down, moving over the curves hidden by the knee length dress and Lena closes her eyes and spreads her legs, the dress pulling tight as it bunches higher on her thighs with the motion. Kara burns, heat smoldering in her abdomen and Lena arches against her touch, so responsive and so kissable.
Kara's hands eagerly map the slope of Lena’s thighs, moving the dress further up to palm at smooth pale skin.
Lena’s touch burns where her hands move over her biceps and Kara presses forward, directly against warm heat. The sound that Lena makes is high pitched and needy and Kara wants to hear more of it, has to hear more of it.
"Kara," Lena breathes her name, nails raking along Kara's scalp. Kara moans, feeling it all, as Lena draws her into the throes of a heavy, distracting kiss.
Her hips move against Kara’s thigh with their own gravity, urging Kara on and Kara has to curl her hands around her hips, controlling their mindless motion. The quiet noises she makes against Kara’s mouth are earth shattering. The airy notations of it vibrate against Kara’s mouth, making the air around them buzz against Kara’s skin.
“Kara please,” Lena begs, “Kara.”
The repetition of the name draws a stillness to their movements and Kara draws back a little, eyes hazy and head still foggy as Lena studiously avoids her eyes.
"Lena."
"I'm sorry." Lena tenses against her, swallowing roughly. That freckle on her throat bobs with the effort and Kara's mouth waters. "I…I don’t know why I said that."
That manages to break through the haze and Kara’s heartbeat spikes, an irrational fear, as every scenario of this going the wrong way flashes through her mind. Guilt sweeps up her chest, heavy and potent and she draws a bit more space between them. She can’t go on unless the truth is out there for Lena to parse and not hidden in the depths of deception.
“I know why.” Kara begins softly, regretfully removing her hands from Lena’s waist and the thigh lodged desperately between her legs. Lena makes a tiny noise of protest that she tries to smother by clearing her throat and Kara's face burns but she lifts her chin, meeting Lena’s eyes. “My real name is Kara Zor-El.”
The anger returns to Lena's eyes with full force and for a split second, Kara thinks that she’s just lost her best friend.
Kara doesn't expect Lena to reach out, clamping her hands against her shoulders like she was going to push her way. Instead, she does the opposite and Kara ends up right back where she was, with her thigh lodged desperately between Lena's legs and her hands pressed to the wall on opposite sides of her head.
"You lied to me." Lena grits out, fingers digging into the pads of Kara's shoulders. Kara winces, concerned that she could still so clearly feel pain from that. She swallows roughly, nodding sadly.
"I didn't at first. I was going to tell you. I wanted to but I-"
"Just wanted to toy with me as two different people?" Lena supplies and Kara's brows crinkle as Lena loosens her fingers.
"No Lena, I would never -"
"Treat me like a Luthor?"
"No!" Kara vehemently rebutts, moving in to gently frame Lena's face between her hands. Lena stiffens a little but she doesn't pull away. "I trust you." Kara breathes.
"But -"
"I admit that I was surprised by the kryptonite. It feels like nails running through my veins and I….it reminds me of…”
“Of?”
"I watched my planet die." Kara answers immediately, forcing her voice not to shake. "I was stuck in the Phantom Zone for twenty four years. I lived through your brother turning the sun red. I found my aunt only to lose her again and I…" Kara stops, turning her head away. She swallows roughly, removing her hands from Lena’s face as her trembling fingers clenched into fists. "I'm familiar with pain."
Lena's jaw flexes and she looks away, eyes shadowed with something like regret.
"I…" Lena starts, a contrite frown pinching her brows.
"But….if I had to trust anyone with it, I choose you, always."
There's a beat of silence between them, one that pulses with heat and smolders like embers when their eyes meet in the middle of their muddled emotions. Lena’s eyes soften - a feat that stirs threads of desire within Kara. Kara fully lets her go, ready to step back as Lena remains frozen, her lipstick less lips parting as she assesses the sincerity of Kara’s words.
Kara’s stomach flutters, skin buzzing as Lena’s eyes stare into her soul. The staring lengthens as Lena's eyes flicker between hers and then slowly drift down to her lips. Kara's face burns at the look in those eyes and then they're sinking into each other, foreheads pressed together as their breaths mingle in the space between.
"I'm still so angry at you." Lena breathes out. Kara closes her eyes, accepting it all. "And we obviously need to talk some more about this, but you're taking me to that valley with you to rescue Sam."
Kara's eyes fly open. "What -"
"Sam is my friend too."
"Lena."
"And sue me if I don't feel like sending you off somewhere that you could die, especially when I'm dying to kiss you again."
Kara laughs, one that gets swallowed by Lena's eagerly awaiting mouth. This kiss is sweet, lingering, deep. Lena melts, tilting her head back as Kara drifts forward, kissing Lena soundly.
Lena releases her then, panting against her lips as their eyes flutter open. She's a mess, a pretty mess, Kara thinks as she curls a finger through a stray curl and Lena drapes an arm around her shoulders, pulling her in for a hug. Kara sinks into it, tucking her face against Lena’s neck as Lena’s fingers comb through her hair.
"We have less than two hours until totality." Lena says determinedly. "If we're going to stop that eclipse, we need to get you back to the medbay first."
"Lena," Kara protests, one that fades when Lena leans back and lifts an eyebrow. Kara swallows down her objections and instead gives a little eye roll.
"And then," Lena starts, her voice taking on a smoky quality as her hand tangles with the one Kara's still got pressed to her thigh. Lena slips their hands beneath her dress to press directly over that heated wet spot on her panties and Kara nearly chokes on the rest of her words. She stutters, face flushing as Lena's lips curve into a dangerous smile. "You owe me, Supergirl."
“Yes ma'am.” Kara answers, leaning forward to seal her promise with another sweet kiss.

“I got a new hoodie today.” Kara offers up to the squad, as they sit in a cafe drinking coffee, too much coffee, and also hot chocolate with sprinkles. (Kara will let you guess which one she got.)
Lena raises her eyebrows. “Nope. Wrong.”
“How can that be wrong? She either did or she lied about it.” Alex says---suspiciously---- frowning dangerously. She can tell this is about to be sappy. Alex wishes she had the spray bottle. Alas, Kelly said that Alex isn’t allowed to use it in public.
“We got a new hoodie.” Lena leans in, a slow smirk growing onto her face. Alex groans as she falls back in her chair. “Luthor!” she whines.
“Be cuter on you anyway, babe.” Kara says softly. Alex groans even louder. Alex wishes again that she had that spray bottle, or even better, some bleach for her eyes. Kara has leaned in and began to press a kiss to her girlfriend’s lips. “This is the worst thing I’ve ever experienced.”
“You were almost drowned.” Kara pulls back to retort. “You’ve nearly died countless times. My love for Lena is not something you need to worry about.” Kara freezes. Lena freezes.
Alex’s eyes widen.
“You love me?” Asks the Luthor, her eyes wide with awed shock. It is obvious that she wasn’t expecting that.
“Of course I love you, doofus. You’re my best friend, and I would die for you. Do I love you? Sure. Yes. Definitely. Do I wish I had said it in literally any other circumstance? More than you will ever know.” Kara rambles.
It’s cut off by Lena kissing her this time.

Living in National City, you get used to seeing things fly overhead. Usually Supergirl, a flash of blue radiating hope and righteousness and recklessness streaking across the sky. A glimpse of the Martian Manhunter (who waves at her when she notices now), far more helicopters than Maggie ever saw in Gotham, the occasional drone. This time is no different; Maggie even catches a glimpse of the S on her chest.
She doesn't let it distract her, but the person she's interrogating does; clear sign that he's not a native to here or, for that matter, Metropolis. "I--sorry."
"No worries, it happens," Maggie says. "So are you new in town?"
He's not on edge or else very good at hiding it, and she learns enough about the situation to safely rule him out as a suspect and give her a few more leads to work. Thankfully, to work later. It's been a long, largely frustrating day, and she's looking forward to game night more than she usually is. It helps that Alex has promised scotch, and that Kara always has more food than Maggie thinks could ever be necessary, though somehow it's all gone by the end of the night.
Smart money's on J'onn, but she has a hunch someone else is behind it.
Regardless, she's genuinely excited to clock out and get to Kara's apartment, even if board games haven't been her style since before she had her first crush.
Kara greets her and Alex with a hug; Maggie's not expecting it, but hugs back, because Little Danvers is pretty damn good at them. J'onn's also here but sticks with just a smile and nod, and Winn's too distracted by whatever nerd crap he's ranting about to notice they've walked in for at least another couple minutes.
Alex goes to set down the booze, and Kara sticks by Maggie with a smile. "Hey! It's good to see you guys."
"It's good to be here," Maggie says. "Are we hosting an army, by chance?"
True to form, there's enough pizza for an entire grade school stacked on the counter. Kara blushes and ducks her head. "Uh, just wanted to be prepared...? And they're cheaper in bulk. Plus, whatever we don't finish can go to the DEO for the people on the night shift."
Maggie blinks, surprised. It seems a little ridiculous that Alex's sister knows about the DEO, and well enough to speak of it so casually. She's a reporter. But hey, there's been no exposes yet. She shrugs and says, "Or your eyes are bigger than your stomach. No shame in it, we've all been there."
There's a loud bit of laughter from the couches at a joke Maggie didn't catch, and Kara leans in just slightly to be heard over it. "I think you might just be underestimating me."
Maggie turns to make eye contact more directly, and Kara's eyes flick up to meet her gaze from--somewhere else, maybe the food behind them. "Well, guess we'll see, won't we?"
Kara, cheeks pink, leans back again, tucking her hair behind her ear. That's--okay, it is a little hot in here, so it's definitely possible that Maggie's just reading into the gesture, but it's also possible that her gaydar failed on both Danvers sisters. Strange. She'd thought Kara had a thing for that Daxamite guy. Not that it matters anyway, because she's seeing Alex, so she heads over to sit next to the person she actually came here with.
Once James and Lena join them, everyone shuffles around to make room. Maggie ends up with a Danvers sister on either side of her, a pile of board games in front of her, and a plate full of food in her lap. All-in-all, it's a nice start to the night, even with that weird moment earlier.
The game they end up playing for most of the night is about guessing how many people have done something before everyone confesses. It's clearly more for the joy of learning about each other than winning, since they only remember to keep score every other round, but it's a hell of a lot of fun even if Maggie's pretty sure she's supposed to have enough points to win by now. She learns more about the group than she'd thought she was going to tonight; James is still logged into his ex's Netflix, Lena once broke up with someone because they were bad in bed, Kara doesn't know how to change a flat tire.
James grabs the next card when Winn, bitter about being the only one to miss the previous round, refuses to. "Have you ever catfished anyone online?"
Maggie guesses 4, and writes yes. Winn and Alex at work (which is what she'd done), and then one more to account for whichever wild card it ends up being in the group, because every time she's failed to consider that, someone's come out of left field to say yes, of course he's jumped off a cliff, he can fly.
Everyone flips their cards. Sure, enough, Winn and Alex both have a yes, as does, surprisingly, Kara.
"Kara!" Lena says, scandalized and delighted. "When did you--?"
"Okay, I wasn't lying," Kara says, refusing to meet anyone's gaze. "I just--I didn't say who I was, you know? I used a fake name but I didn't use someone else's photos or anything."
"I thought you didn't use social media?" Winn says. "Because if you do, you can follow my Twitter. It's--"
"I love you, Winn, but don't subject Kara to that. You're half my feed."
"That's--an exaggeration--"
The bickering ends up leaving Kara out entirely, focused more on whether Winn's opinions on Buffy warranted that many tweets. Kara leans back into the couch, relieved, perking up when the conversation turns to whether or not that even counts.
"It definitely doesn't," says Winn, who notably has a 3 written down. "Catfishing is, like, malicious."
"You said you've done it."
"To help save National City, it barely even counts. Except it does for the sake of the game."
"I would say it only counts as catfishing if you're actively pretending to be someone else," J'onn says. "Otherwise it's just using an alias."
"Guess that means you're cleared, Little Danvers," Maggie says, wrapping a friendly arm around her shoulder. Kara starts a little when she does, but leans into it, more than Maggie had--really intended for her to do. She's warm against Maggie's side, every point of contact soothing.
Okay, so maybe there's something to Kara being not fully heterosexual.
"You know that means you don't get a point, right?" Alex teases.
Maggie turns back to her girlfriend, grinning. "Yeah, but it also means we get to preserve your kid sister's innocence."
Kara elbows her lightly, to the point where she has to be actively holding back because she cannot actually be that weak. Sweet, Maggie guesses, even though she's pretty sure she couldn't hurt her.The game night continues on, and without noticing exactly who's the culprit, the food's almost entirely gone by the time they leave.
--
The next day, Maggie's in Strongtower Luxury Apartments, one of the worst complexes in this part of town despite its name, investigating the lead from yesterday's interrogation. The person she's talking to is on-edge, constantly glancing between her and the bedroom door, flinching whenever she moves too quickly. She tries to slow her movements as best as possible, stand between him  and the door to see if he relaxes (he does) and then trying to communicate using just her expression while keeping the conversation calm.
The door creaks open behind her, and she hears the quiet hum of something powering up. Shit. The person she's talking to fully dives out of the way, but there's not enough time for Maggie to do the same before there's the sound of the gun firing.
What she does have is just enough time to think oh, I'm going to die before there's a slam of force against her right side and she feels herself being pushed to the side and to safety. It's not the first time Supergirl's saved her life, as she's lived in National City for more than a week, but it is her first time being saved directly. She's warm, soft and unyielding all at once, powerful in a way that takes Maggie's breath away, a little.
Supergirl sets her down with surprising gentleness before turning to the person with the gun. They're trying to front bravado, but their hands are shaking too much to aim the thing. Maggie's sure she could talk the guy down if Supergirl gives her a chance to, but, of course, she doesn't, speeding forward, ripping the gun out of his hands, and cuffing him before he can so much as take a step back.
With that, Supergirl looks at Maggie with a quick smile before turning to the person who lives here. "Are you alright?"
"Yes," he says, eyes wide and adoring like every civilian who hasn't had a chance to see Supergirl up-close. "Thank you! I--that was amazing!"
"I'm just happy I could help," Supergirl says. "Sorry about your window."
Maggie's frankly surprised she had the restraint to not make a hero-sized hole in the wall, but the person who's going to have to pay for the damages doesn't seem to mind, still looking up at her with an expression just-short of worshipful. "It's alright. Thank you, Supergirl!"
With an eyeroll that she hopes neither of them notice, Maggie brings the person Supergirl cuffed out of the apartment, reading them their rights. Normally, this would've pissed her off enough that she would've straight-up apologized about the way they were apprehended, but they did try to kill her, so. Her magnanimity only goes so far. To her surprise, though, Supergirl doesn't fly up, up, and away immediately, instead floating back through the man's window and hovering by the squad car.
"Are you alright, Officer?"
Maggie blinks at her, surprised. "Uh--give me one second." After getting her probable perp settled in the car, Maggie turns back to Supergirl. The woman's shorter than she'd thought, about the same height as Maggie. It doesn't mean she couldn't throw Maggie into the stratosphere if she were so inclined, she's under no grand ideas about this somehow leveling the playing field between them, but it's--a little humanizing.
Kryptonian-izing? Whatever. She's a cop, not a linguist.
"I'm fine," Maggie says. "And I appreciate the rescue."
This close, Maggie can see Supergirl's eyes don't stay at her own, glancing down to her lips every time she talks. That, at least, is reassuring to her gaydar; she'd clocked Supergirl as one of them before CatCo had adopted her as National City's pet hero. Maggie's not unhappy in her relationship, but--come on, it's Supergirl. She bets Alex would give her a pass.
But no, she doesn't want to do that to her. She's been down that road, and it's not like this thing with Supergirl would ever be anything more than a one-off. Maggie doesn't even know her name. (The thought's more painful than Maggie would've thought, but it's easy enough to bite back.)
"Yeah, of course!" Supergirl says after a too-long moment, looking back up at the rest of Maggie's face with a little shy smile. "Anytime. It's what I'm here for."
Maggie's entertained several fantasies before about Supergirl, more getting a chance to sit and yell at her about the times she shouldn't have stepped in, Supergirl looking just as abashed as she does getting caught staring at Maggie's mouth. She has a feeling that fantasy might get put on the backburner for some other, less PG ones now.
"Fly safe," Maggie says. "I've gotta bring him in."
"Right, yeah," Supergirl says, taking a couple steps back. "Drive safe, Officer."
With that, she jumps up and into the sky, and no force on Earth would've kept her from watching her leave.
--
Maggie doesn't bring up a cheat list with Alex that night. One, it would be a thought experiment, not a reality. Two, it would bring up conversations that Maggie does not want to have. Three, her girlfriend works with Supergirl, and that's just mortifying enough to give Maggie pause.
Also four, she'd get jealous of whoever Alex picked. She's woman enough to admit she can be a bit of a hypocrite.
It's one of Maggie's rare days off today. Before she'd started dating Alex, she'd have spent days like this at Al's, smirking at whoever the prettiest face there was and bringing them home for a night. Now that she's a taken woman, she's mostly just puttering about her apartment, listening to music and trying to do all the little things that've been building up.
She likes her space to be clean, so it's not like there's a ton to do, but it's still a little annoying to get knocked out of her rhythm by a knock on the door.
"Babe, if you forgot your key, I know you know how to pick the lock--" Maggie's saying as she opens the door, fully expecting to see Alex on the other side.
Instead, it's Kara, who says, "I don't think I should confirm or deny whether or not Alex knows how to do that."
"Kara! Is everything okay?"
"Yeah, everything's totally fine!" Kara says. "I'm just here to see Alex, is she not home?"
"No, she's at work," Maggie says. "Sorry. Did you not text her?"
Kara groans. "No. I let Winn mess with my phone to try and get better signal and then it broke, and he hasn't been able to fix it yet."
"Rookie mistake," Maggie says with a laugh. "Alright, I can text her for you, if you wanna come in."
"It's not anything important," Kara says. "I don't want to impose or anything! Lena's already offered to buy me another phone."
"You know she's into you, right?" Maggie says.
"Wh--Lena?" Kara shakes her head as Maggie turns around to lead her into the apartment. "No way. She's a really good friend."
Maggie doesn't exactly feel like pushing the point, so she grabs her phone where it's resting on the counter, pulling up her message history with Alex. "So you are into that Daxamite guy? Mon-el?"
Kara openly laughs at that. "Uh, no. Not even a little bit, what gave you that idea?"
Maggie shrugs and looks back up. "I don't know. You spend a lot of time with him, guess I just assumed."
"Well, you know what they say about assumptions," Kara says, eyes too low on Maggie's face to be making eye contact, especially since Kara's about the same height as her.
"Sure," Maggie says, voice trailing off. She's trying to remember if she's seen Kara without her glasses on, because this is the third time in as many days that she's caught someone looking at her lips rather than her eyes when talking to her, and if she's right--
"Maggie? You okay?"
Kara's concerned expression is the same as Supergirl's yesterday, checking in on her after she'd almost been shot. Maggie's honestly shocked she hasn't put it together before; the glasses don't do much. It's just--they'd always seemed so different, the raw power of Supergirl versus the sweet, cozy Kara.  "Yes. Yeah. I just--realized something."
--
"Oh, what'd you realize?"
Rao, please let Maggie not have realized Kara's been checking her out. She knows nothing can ever come of it, she's literally her sister's girlfriend and gay awakening all-in-one, but she's just looking. She can't not look, the woman's absolutely gorgeous.
Maggie's expression is almost--starstruck, the polar opposite of yesterday afternoon where there'd been this resentment behind the relief after Kara saved her. She'd wanted so badly to ask why it was there, what did she think of Supergirl, but there'd been no way for Supergirl to ask without seeming needy, and no way for Kara to ask Maggie without raising some pretty hard-to-answer questions.
"You did the same thing yesterday," Maggie says thoughtfully.
Kara laughs, high and nervous. "Uh, we didn't...talk? Yesterday? Unless I'm forgetting something?"
"But we did, right?" Maggie says, tone kind and soothing even as Kara's anxiety skyrockets. "It's okay. I won't tell anyone. I mean, I'm guessing Alex knows, so--"
"Wh--how did you--what?"
Maggie laughs. "You know, for a reporter, you let your words get away from you a lot."
Kara frowns. "Well, how did you figure it out? Did I act too friendly or something?"
Maggie looks a little surprised. "You--looked at my mouth when I was talking."
Oh, so it's not just that Maggie's figured out she's Supergirl, she also has on lock the most mortifying thing that Kara's ever done. Great. Just wonderful. "Um--"
"I won't tell Alex," Maggie says, immediately, and Kara's shoulders relax.
"Thank you," Kara says fervently. "I know it's--I know you like her, I just really don't want to ruin this for her."
Maggie smiles at her kindly, and Kara tries not to feel too much like the kid with a crush on their older sister's girl. She is, obviously, she just doesn't want to feel like it. "It's alright, seriously. Can I just ask one thing?"
"Sure," Kara says, because how the fuck is she supposed to say no?
"Why didn't you tell her you like girls? You didn't have to say it's me if that's what it was, you could just say that her realization made you realize some things."
Kara, cheeks warm, looks down. "So, uh. You remember game night, how I said yes to the catfishing but also how I didn't lie? I've known for--awhile. Years. Since Alex's family adopted--well, if you know, I can...I've known since Krypton. It wasn't a big deal there. But then I got to Earth, and everything was so--overwhelming, and people were--"
"Hey, Kara, it's okay," Maggie says, hands out like she's trying to decide if she should hug Kara. "Seriously. Deep breaths."
Kara's pretty close to hyperventilating, so she does exactly that, breathing in and out until her heartrate's under control. (Maggie's slows once Kara relaxes, too; it's nice to see she does care about Kara beyond just--being Alex's kid sister.) "Sorry."
"You don't need to--"
"Yeah, but. Sorry. Anyway. I basically just talked about it online, but I didn't--really get how the Internet worked? So I just used a fake name and then...I don't know, how was I supposed to tell Alex 'yeah, I totally get what you're saying, I just never trusted you with it?' It's just awkward. I don't know how to bring it up without lying, and I don't want to lie. And I really don't want to hurt her."
"I get it," Maggie says. "Seriously. And don't worry, Little Danvers, your secret's safe with me until you choose to tell her yourself."
Kara can't help but frown at the nickname. "You know, I would've thought you learning I was Supergirl would've at least stopped the Little Danvers nickname."
Maggie's eyes are just a little darker than normal, and Kara starts when she realizes her heartrate's faster, too. "You not a fan of it?"
The energy in the room shifts, and Kara leans against the counter just a little to ground herself. She's dreaming or something, has to be, but it feels too real for that. That has to mean that Maggie's--flirting back, which is insane, so it can't be true, but it is, so she should stop it, but Maggie's looking at her with this intensity, and it's been way too long that she's just been standing here silently, she should say something. "No."
"Aw, Little Danvers," Maggie teases, and Kara's frown deepens. "You pout whenever I do that, do you know?"
"I--"
"If you pout again," Maggie says, voice low. Kara shuts up immediately just to listen to the way she sounds, almost missing the words she uses. "I'll bite that lip."
Yeah, this is a direction that Kara hadn't seen this going. She should stop. She should leave. She should tell her sister that her girlfriend's coming onto her. That's all of what she should do. Instead, she says, "So you'll keep calling me that?"
Maggie laughs and leans just a little closer. They're not touching, not even close enough that Kara can feel the warmth of Maggie, but close enough that Kara can't stop thinking about taking the extra step closer and pressing right up against her. "Are you encouraging me, Little Danvers?"
Rather than answer and admit out loud what exactly she's doing, Kara pouts again, obvious, baiting Maggie into making the first move. Maggie doesn't disappoint, either, immediately stepping closer and putting her lips on Kara's. It's everything Kara'd ever pictured, heated and deep, and she whines when Maggie pulls back.
Maggie's pupils are blown, and Kara thrills when she puts one hand on either side of her on the counter. It's hardly pinning her in; Kara could knock this whole building off its foundation without even breaking a sweat. But it's nice anyway, especially when Maggie leans in, close enough that Kara can feel her breath fanning against her face, and says, "You taste incredible."
Kara groans and pulls Maggie in, mumbling something about her not being half-bad. This time Maggie lets herself be pulled in fully, legs tangled with Kara's in a way that's going to drive her absolutely insane. Maggie's good at this, Kara knew she'd be good at this, hasn't been able to stop thinking about how good she'd be since she saw her for the first time. She's doing the worst thing she's ever done without the influence of Red Kryptonite as an excuse, and she can't bring herself to care.
Maggie sucks on her tongue, and Kara's knees give out, putting all her weight against the counter and letting Maggie pull back just to press kisses all over her face, on her neck, not enough to leave a mark, feeling incredible either way. Kara has no idea how long they've been like that, just knows that when Maggie pulls back, she doesn't want her to, holding her gently to her by her belt loops.
"So," Maggie says, just a little breathless. "I didn't--expect that when you walked in."
Kara smiles up at her, and Maggie smiles back. "Me either. I'm not complaining, though."
This is going to be a mess. If Alex ever finds out, it's going to be WW3, Danvers edition, but with Maggie looking down at her, Kara feels like she's on top of the world. She doesn't even think she regrets it yet. Maybe it'll hit later, but for now, she pulls Maggie in, smiling too much to even kiss her properly. Kara's going to let herself have this as long as Maggie will let her, as long as she thinks she can get away with it, and probably a little longer besides.

---
Kara’s body sags into the lawn chair that she keeps on the rooftop of her apartment. There’s an area up there that she’s claimed for herself, right by the back corner just around the rooftop entrance. She’s glad for it, especially right now, while she stares out onto the other rooftops of her neighborhood with her powers blown for at least another couple of days.
She lets out a big pathetic sigh, puffing out her cheeks, when she recalls how she got into this predicament.
It had been a hectic day for Supergirl. A rogue missile headed straight for downtown National City coming at the heels of a drawn out fight with an invading alien group. She’d only had enough time and energy to redirect said missile, but not to release it and fly away in time. Shrapnel lacerated her suit and embedded itself into her flesh when she attempted her retreat while the fiery explosion singed the edges of her cape as she spun out of the blast radius. She was then propelled by the force of the explosion, nosediving at the precipice of consciousness into the cliff’s edge by the coast.
She winces at the memory and the proceeding aerial footage that Brainy showed her where she collided with the side of jagged rocks off the side of a cliff, taking a chunk of it out. The worst part was when she’d startled awake the next morning, frantically searching for the date and time, realizing with a sinking heart that she’d missed the night she told Lena she’d return to her balcony.
She hoped Lena would understand, yet when she had plugged her phone in, there were no messages from her. Kara frowned and tried not to let the silence between them affect her. But by the way she slouched back on the sunbed, she couldn’t quite shake off her disappointment.
Now that she’s off-duty for a few days while she recovers, she requests to work remotely to spend the time researching just so she can finish hiding in her apartment. Well, at least for now, she’s hiding on her rooftop. It’s become a kind of oasis for her. Not just today, but for a few months now while she accepted their new normal and tried to navigate this Earth. She didn’t think it would make a difference, but when she brought up two foldable lawn chairs and a tiny round table to make a little sitting area for herself, it somehow made her feel less alone.
These days, Kara will take whatever she can get.
Her head lolls to the side when she observes a few birds walking near her before perching themselves on the cement ledge nearby. One of the birds flew up before dropping down on the cement ledge gracefully.
“Show off,” she mutters to herself. “I can do that, too, you know.”
The birds continue on disregarding her comments and her muttering. She is then interrupted by a buzz of her phone in the plastic cup holder section of her foldable chair. She considers not answering, Alex probably pestering her to get some rest like she’s not already doing that. But the idea of getting yelled at just doesn’t interest her, not when she's already feeling herself at her lowest, so she decides to pluck her phone out of the cup holder.
Her back straightens and eyes widening in unabashed surprise when she glances down at the message displayed on her phone screen.
Lena: Are you home?
She sucks her lips between her teeth, her thumbs hovering above the glass. She moves her finger and presses the call button.
It rings just once when Lena picks up.
“Uh, hi,” Kara offers lamely, cringing at herself.
“Hi.”
“I’m—did you need something?”
There’s a pause on the other end of the line.
“Alex told me what happened. I…I thought to bring you some food since I heard you’re not well. But if you’re not at home or don’t want company, I can leave the bag by your door.”
“Uh…no! I mean—you didn't need to do that,” she starts, scrambling out of her chair and rushing to the rooftop door before jumping down, taking the stairs two at a time and almost colliding with the stairwell wall. “You’re—that’s very nice, Lena…”
When her apartment door comes to view, she freezes mid-step. Kara’s gaze drops down to the bottom landing of the third floor and finds Lena, still dressed in her work clothes and hair done up in a loose bun, holding a plastic bag in one hand and her phone by her ear in the other.
“You're at my door,” she comments, stating the obvious, hearing her voice echo through the open phone line between them.
Lena smiles, the motion slight and lopsided.
“It would appear so.”
Gingerly, she steps down one step at a time, her eyes never once leaving Lena. Long seconds pass between them until she arrives by her front door, a measly two feet away from her visitor.
Lena pulls the phone away from her ears with a smile before pocketing it. Kara mirrors her when she realizes she hadn’t hung up yet. Lena’s smile drops and her now empty hand reaches up but stops mid-air between them.
Oh, right.
“Looks a little gnarly, huh?” she jokes, an awkward grin on her face. Truth be told, she feels better than she looks. By tomorrow’s time, her injuries will disappear and fade, her face returning to its unblemished state. She remembers that very few people see her like this, and it’s with an ache in her chest she realizes that this is the first time that Lena has seen her in this state. “I’m fine. It doesn’t hurt.”
Lena slowly closes her hand into a fist and eventually drops it. She does her best not to feel disappointment at that.
“Um, you—you had food?”
It’s then that Lena lifts the bag she’s been holding, extending her arm out. “I got your favorites.”
She accepts the bag, their fingers grazing with each other until she grabs hold of the bag, welcoming the weight of the food that’s inside.
“Would you like to join me?”
*
The rooftop door opens to a fresh breeze and the waning sun.
She leads the two of them to her makeshift sitting area by the far end where a couple of birds have taken to loitering. They flap their wings and get away from the commotion of their presence and she sets the bag down by the table.
Her eyes are drawn to Lena crouching down slightly and brushing the back of her skirt so she can sit on the lawn chair properly, sinking down until her knees are higher than her hips.
Kara outwardly grimaces. “Sorry, I forgot that’s the saggy one. We can trade place—”
“I’m fine. I don’t mind.”
Kara watches her but silently nods and resumes taking out food from the bag and spreads them out on the table, filling every space on it. Unsure what to say or even how to speak to Lena, Kara then decides to take her time serving them their food. She passes a pair of paper-wrapped chopsticks to Lena who accepts it quietly before she peels her own, separating the wood with a snap.
She senses Lena’s eyes trained on her, but she doesn’t flick her gaze up not once, instead focusing on taking the plastic lids off and turning it into a makeshift plate. She then serves up a portion of lo mein and a few pieces of sesame chicken before putting three healthy pieces of golden brown potstickers to finish out the plate.
Kara finally looks up to Lena studying her. She offers a crooked smile and offers the lid-turned-plate towards the other woman who accepts it quietly, their fingers once again grazing against each other. She hurries and picks up the lid of the lo mein and serves herself her own plate, the portion smaller than what she normally eats when her powers are fully intact.
For the next few moments, they eat in silence, the soundtrack to their early evening but the crowing of the nearby birds and the sound of distant traffic down on the streets. Every now and again, her eyes cast up to watch Lena as she digs into her own plate. The silence between them settles comfortably, like before.
Before the distance between them, before her lies and betrayal, before Lena’s revenge. Before all the hurt she inflicted, they inflicted on each other. Before, before, before.
Except they can’t ever go back to that world, to that life.
As she catches sight of Lena chewing on a potsticker and eyes staring out onto the view from her rooftop, she thinks there are worse places to be and she’s fine exactly where she is.
*
“Thanks for the food,” she says, breaking the silence between them, her lid-plate completely empty. “I appreciate you coming by.”
“Well,” Lena starts, leaning back on the chair, sinking further, her legs crossed at the knee. She looks comfortable this way despite the sharpness of her work attire. “I was promised a ‘something’ and I’m here to collect.”
“I meant to come back.”
“You were busy.”
She chuckles at that. “A rogue missile can do that to you.”
Lena tilts her head, as if studying her, and Kara does her best not to squirm under her watchful gaze. Then, Lena silently leans forward and stands from her seat, wiping away any minuscule dust or crumbs from her lap. Just as quietly, Kara tilts her head as she follows Lena’s every move.
A gasp escapes her mouth, her brows jumping to her hairline when Lena extends a hand forward.
“Let’s dance, Kara.”
Her eyes drop to the offered hand in front of her. She looks back up again to an unreadable expression on Lena’s face. She gets on her feet, her legs slightly wobbly until she’s standing to her full height.
Careful in her movements, as if Lena might take her offered hand back, Kara clasps their hands together and steps forward just as Lena steps back.
“There’s no music,” she says. Lena simply quirks her brow before she reveals her phone in her other hand. Kara blinks, wonders how she could have missed that.
“There’s always music.”
Lena then presses play on her phone, the first few notes playing. Her brows crease together, her eyes quietly asking, but Lena just shrugs. They then get into position, Kara’s other hand on Lena’s waist just as Lena’s rests on her shoulder, her finger almost tracing the scabbing gash lines on the side of her face. Kara barely resists the shiver that runs down her spine.
“I was watching Notting Hill last night because my schedule cleared up.”
She cocks her head slightly as the two of them begin to sway. “Didn’t take you much for a romantic comedy kind of viewer.”
“In this world, I am.”
She nods. “I like it.”
The cool evening air breezes past them as they entangle themselves as they sway on beat to the song, their gazes stretching past each other’s heads.
“What’s it like, not having powers?”
She shrugs a little. “Like things are muffled, almost muted. I feel weighed down, like gravity’s working twice as hard to keep me down. It’s not unpleasant or anything, but it’s not a feeling I’m used to.”
Lena nods, almost to herself, as she seems to take the information in.
“I got worried when you never showed last night,” Lena says as she stares right up at her, her voice soft.
She shakes her head, though, and pulls Lena closer, wants the other woman to make sure she’s looking when she says, “I wanted to be there, but I was out cold, apparently. I woke up this morning and panicked when I found out I’d missed it. Then when you didn’t contact me, I just thought you were mad at me.”
“I thought you changed your mind.”
Kara tilts her head up to find the blues of the afternoon sky having been traded in for the oranges and pinks. “As part of our pact of starting over, I think we should really improve our communication skills.”
She then releases Lena so she can twirl her.
“You’re not a fan of us assuming the worst of a situation or each other and internalizing it as a moral failing of ourselves?” Lena teases, exhaling a breathy laugh.
“Lena, please,” she grumbles, a half-hearted attempt at suppressing her laugh. “Be serious.”
She spins Lena twice until they come back together again, their fronts now pressed to each other, their faces inches from one another.
Lena she turns her head until her chin rests on Kara’s shoulder. “We can stand to be better, I agree.”
They move gently and loosely on the rooftop, Elvis Costello’s crooning voice filling the space around them and the National City city skyline just off to the distance. Finally, the last notes of the song play until Lena separates their hands and stops the next song from playing on her phone. Kara watches on as Lena walks towards the ledge of the rooftop towards the city’s skyline.
It takes her a few drawn out moments to follow suit and stand beside Lena, her eyes trained on the twinkling lights of the city she saved just yesterday.
“Kara.”
She glances sideways, watching and waiting. Lena pivots her body so she’s facing Kara, green eyes bright and alive even in the blanketing darkness of the evening.
“I’m glad you’re okay,” she breathes out, her warm hand on Kara’s forearm where a large gash sits. “I’m glad you asked me to stay for dinner. I’m glad…you let me in.”
She places her own hand atop Lena’s. “Can I tell you that ‘something’ I promised?”
Lena gestures with a nod, curling long, elegant fingers around Kara’s arm, like she’s trying to anchor herself to Kara, or maybe it’s the other way around. She’s not sure, but she doesn’t care either way, just that they are.
“I want to rebuild our friendship first and foremost, and that’s what I’ll be focusing on. But I also…” she pauses, chewing on her bottom lip. When Lena looks on encouragingly, she takes a deep breath. “But I also hope that if you’re open to it, that it could someday lead to something…more.”
“Something…more,” Lena repeats.
“Yeah.”
“What are you really saying?”
Kara scratches her temple, adjusting her glasses on her face. “I’m saying that there are feelings that I’ve denied myself about you because I’d hurt you and then you’d hurt me. But they’ve never gone away, Lena. Not once. And if it’s alright with you, I don’t want them to.”
When Lena doesn’t say anything, Kara’s confidence wanes and her mouth goes rogue. “But if you don’t feel the same way, if you don’t or c-can’t love me as more than a friend, then that’s fine, too. I’d never—that’ll never stop me being your friend or wanting to protect you.”
“You love me?”
“Without question,” she says, pressing forward as she tightens her grip on Lena’s hand.
“What if you change your mind?”
Kara’s heart tries not to bruise at the fear and apprehension in Lena’s eyes.
“I won’t.”
“How do you know?”
“I don’t,” she says with a helpless shrug. “But I know you.”
Lena doesn’t say anything more, her eyes searching Kara’s face—for what, she’s not sure, but Kara won’t look away. Wordlessly, Lena twists her head to gaze out to the darkened horizon for a moment, and Kara prepares herself for the worst. She’s not prepared for the shine of tears in Lena’s eyes when she turns back to look at Kara. She thinks if she looked closely, she would find her reflection and the threat of her own tears.
“I thought we’d missed our chance. After everything, I just thought—”
It’s then she shakes her head, inches closer, her heart rapidly beating when she thinks about what Lena’s saying. “It’s still here, Lena. I’m here.”
Lena lunges forward and Kara receives her in her arms, winding them around Lena’s middle, tightening her grip when Lena buries herself in the crook of her neck. They rock side to side in place as they simply hold one another, the city’s night sounds of National City buzzing around them.
After a short while, they break apart, eyes searching for each other under the dim rooftop lights that Kara just now notices have turned on.
“Okay,” Lena finally says, her voice watery, but strong.
“Yeah?” Her heart sings and swoops when Lena bobs her head. “Okay, then. Um, do you wanna go downstairs and watch a movie or something?”
Kara doesn’t move or breathe or do anything but watch as Lena brings the back of her hand and gently caresses cheek. “I’d love to, but I should head back home.”
She resists the disappointment to wash over her and offers a genuine smile.
“Let me walk you down.”
They untangle from each other, Kara’s body practically vibrating as they clean up and march down the steps hand in hand. When they reach the front of her building, Kara isn’t surprised to find Lena’s driver already waiting.
“When’s your next dance lesson?” Lena asks when she turns to face Kara once again.
“Thursday at the Y. 7pm.”
“Mind if I tag along?”
Her face splits into a wide smile that she doesn’t bother hiding. “Never.”
“Goodnight, Kara,” Lena says, leaning forward and pressing a small, chaste kiss on her cheek before squeezing Kara’s hand and letting go. “See you Thursday.”
Her response is to carefully dip down and place a mirroring kiss on Lena’s cheek. When she draws back, it’s to the image of Lena’s face soft and gentle, smiling up at her.
The smile never disappears from her face as she watches Lena stride towards the backseat of her car, as she rolls the windows down and gives Kara a parting wave, as she rolls the window back up only after they’ve turned the corner.
The air around her swirls with hope, crackles with possibility, and she clings onto it all while she ascends the stairs two at a time to her apartment, humming the song of their earlier dance. This is just the beginning, a chance to make it count.
So that’s what she plans to do.

What am I doing, what am I doing?!
Lena stumbled slightly as she ran up the stairs, trying to calm the pounding of her heart, ignoring Hope’s repetitive requests. “Should I upload the file to Catco’s servers?”
It had taken months of planning, months of deliberating. First in deciding that she would reveal Kara’s secret to the world - give the kryptonian the same panic that had swept through Lena’s body as she watched Lex die and realized she lost everything.
Then deciding that timing was everything… and with Kara’s Pulitzer coming up, Lena could pull her Luthor strings to be the one to introduce her. And in preparation, she’d sell Catco - her hands would be clean of any of this.
The crowning achievement of the reporter’s career in seeking the truth would be destroyed by her own web of deceit.
It was the perfect plan, to make Kara hurt in the way that Lena had been hurt, so that the kryptonian could feel what it’s like for her whole world to end in front of her eyes and learn what loneliness truly was.
So Lena began to write her speech, extolling Kara’s virtues, knowing that the Catco reveal would soon drop on everyone’s phones. With any luck, the timing would be perfect - Kara would be on stage as the news began to hit.
It wasn’t until that night, walking into the Pulitzer event, that Lena finally bothered to read the fucking article. After all, she knew the outcome - Lex’s ties with the president and the Children of Liberty were revealed, Supergirl saved the day and stopped a genocide.
But there was more that she didn’t know, like how involved James was as Guardian, or the turmoil of the DEO. And then there was…
Kara died.
It didn’t erase the betrayal, or the memory of Lex’s glassy eyes. But it made crystal clear to Lena what should’ve been obvious ages ago. Revealing Kara’s identity wouldn’t just be revenge for her web of lies - it could kill her.
What am I doing?! She couldn’t do it. She couldn’t out the super. She needed a new plan. A revenge that would put Kara in a world of pain. But… not one that could end her life. “Lena, what are you doing here?” came a familiar voice walking up the stairs. Lena turned around, composed as ever - a Luthor was never unpoised. “Kara,” Lena said, choking back the panic again. “Okay, you caught me,” Lena said, her facade impeccable as her mind desperately clamored for alternatives for what to say on that stage. “It was supposed to be a surprise, but I’m going to be the one to introduce you.”
---------------------------
The above is an excerpt from A Sea of Green, a completed canon-compliant character study of Lena Luthor with a supercorp endgame. (Please note, it's very different from my other fics!)

Kelly walks into the house she shares with her wife---their new, adoptive, daughter in her arms. She pauses in the doorway. “Alex? Honey, I’m home!” She calls out. “Esme is here too.” she adds, her eyes glancing down at the newborn in her arms.
“Coming! Just need to finish the baby’s room.” Alex responds, her voice muffled from the distance.
Kelly pauses. “You mean you haven’t finished sanitizing the room? Alex, I told you to sanitize it at least four hours ago.” She starts down the hallway. Alex’s head pops out from the bedroom.
“No... You said satanize it.” Alex says slowly. Panic is written across her face.
“Oh my god, what did you do?” Kelly walks faster.
“Nobody panic! I can fix this before the demons are summoned.” Alex says hurriedly, her eyes widening to alarming size as she tries to bar Kelly from the entryway.
Kelly sees the pentagram on the floor and just --- the disappointment in her sigh is evident enough that Esme blinks her eyes open.
“Gonna get me for this, right?” Alex sighs out.
“You know I am.”

THE DILEMMA
You, Kara, and Clark had an eventful night.
First proper fan-fic, open to any ideas, requests, criticism, etc.
Gender-neutral reader x Sasha Calle Supergirl, and a bit of Clark (I'm imaging to be a young Tyler Hoechlin) as well
Tumblr media Tumblr media
You had just gotten off your last shift of the week, you were indifferent to your job, not caring all too much for the menial boring tasks you did day in and day out, and you were always counting down the seconds at the end of the day. Just waiting to leave and do what you really loved, making a difference, helping people, being a hero. You especially enjoyed it on days like this when it was just you and your thoughts, you loved and adored Clark, hell you'd even consider him family, and Kara, well your feelings for her were a bit complicated to you, on one hand, you wanted more than the close relationship the two of you already had, but on the other hand, you didn't want to push yourself too deep into a situation that could easily have your two closest friends feeling awkward around you.
You had just gotten into your costume when you spotted an old man getting robbed at gunpoint in an alley, you were in front of the older man in an instant, scaring the mugger, and causing him to shoot. You caught the bullet with ease, and flicked the mugger in the face, lightly by your standards but still strong enough to give him a mild concussion. You then turned to the old man, " Are you alright?" You asked, "few bruises but nothing a few days of rest won't fix right up" he said, you nodded and smiled before floating up into the air giving him and the small crowd of people who had seen you a slight wave before heading off.
A few hours and small crimes later, both Kara and Clark had finished their shifts for the day as well and the three of you went flying about in search of potential trouble. You and Clark were in Ukraine helping out when the two of you heard a major explosion, it was a massive gas explosion in downtown Toronto, and the three of you rushed to the city and immediately started helping evacuate. Once a majority of the people were safe Clark went to put out the fires and left you and Kara to evacuate the few remaining trapped civilians. Kara and you were able to get the rest of the injured people to paramedics or the hospital directly, once everyone was out you and Kara flew up and assessed the damage. It wasn't too major, only affecting a corner of a city block, and most of the fires had been put out by now. The two of you realized that Clark was practically done and there wasn't much else to be done when you decided to fly off in search of more ways to help.
You and Kara made some awkward small talk, "Hey how was work" she asked "Oh it was boring as always, what about you how was your day" you replied, and she said, "it was fine as well". A little while later the two of you decided to grab a pizza from a local mom-and-pop pizza joint, you both flew to the shared apartment and relaxed while sharing the pizza, the two of you started talking about your time at work and lack of personal connections at both your workplaces because of your shared busyness.
Shortly soon after the conversation took a turn to how the superhero lifestyle was extremely inconvenient for developing any relationships with nearly anyone, "As much as I love saving people and being supergirl I do sometimes wish I could have a normal human life, actually have friends, outside of you and Clark, and spend time doing hobbies! Even relationships aren't something we can do, unless we somehow manage the finesse and luck Clark and Lois have" she somewhat rambled to you, you nodded and said," mhmm, like you said I love being a superhero but, yeah, it does have its pretty significant drawbacks, like you said Clark's somehow got it pretty well managed, how come neither of us've got to that stage yet?" "I know right, that being said he did have a bit of a headstart" she replied causing you to chuckle and grin, "yep that's true, but there's not much I wouldn't do to just get a glimpse of what my life could be like outside of the whole saving people gig." "Exactly we both just need someone who is also a superhero and would get our dilemma" Kara blurted, only realizing what she implied after your cheeks started to blush.
You decided that now was your chance to say something, "Like each other?" You tried to say casually just in case she didn't feel the same way, you didn't come across as very casual with your pink-tinted cheeks. "I don't know, maybe we should give it a shot." She said before giving you a wink causing you to get extremely flustered. "A-a-re you b-b-being completely serious?" You asked hopefully, she looked at you quizzically, wondering if you feel the same she does, spoiler alert you do, she says "yeah, I mean why shouldn't we, the two of us are the only people who we can talk to about our home, we both have similar experiences, and neither of us is gonna get mad at each other for being busy, cause we're both gonna be constantly busy doing the same stuff". After she finished you smiled widely and pulled her into a tight hug, pulling back to give her a sweet and passionate kiss, before "what the absolute heck is going on here?" Clark loudly asked. You and Kara moved back to opposite sides of the couch turning around to face Clark, Kara told him "Hey, Kal, I suppose me and y/n are now dating!" She said while looking between you and Clark, Clark quickly said "My best friend and my cousin?!" In a confused tone, before repeating "My best friend and my cousin!" Now excited for the two of you.
The rest of the night was spent with the three of you talking and chilling out well into the early morning, before Clark went off to work, to tell Lois the news, you and Kara assumed. Both of you fell asleep, cuddling on the couch for most of the day, safe to say Clark definitely took some cute and embarrassing pictures when he arrived home.
THE END

Anyone on here still reading Supergirl fics/oneshots? I'm currently in Supergirl fever again and since I've got a few ideas for the requests I have in my inbox, I thought I'd write something again?
