whenever you're ready
buck & bobby || rated: g || wc: 792 || read on ao3
Buck had been kind of expecting it when Bobby pulled him aside one day after shift and gently asked to speak with him.
He knew he was acting weird around the station, that he was jittery and flighty but he couldn’t help it. So far he had only told Maddie that he was bisexual and it was sitting on the tip of his tongue anytime he was around the others. He desperately wanted to tell them but he didn’t want to just blurt it out over breakfast, he wanted to tell them all individually. Buck wasn’t exactly sure why he wanted to do it like that, surely ripping off the bandaid and telling everyone at once would be easier but he felt vulnerable sharing this part of him and he wanted to do it how it felt right to him.
He felt anxious as Bobby closed the door behind them, leaving them alone in the captain’s office.
“Talk to me, Buck,” Bobby said gently, gesturing for him to have a seat in one of the chairs in front of his desk. “You’ve been jumpy for a couple days now. Is something going on, kid?”
“I— I haven’t been jumpy,” He tried, swallowing roughly when Bobby just gave him a look.
Bobby surprised him by sitting down on the chair next to him, Buck had been expecting him to sit at his desk. “I know something is going on, Buck. You don’t have to talk about it, I can’t make you, but I just want you to know that I’m here for you, no matter what it is, okay?”
Buck felt his throat go tight as tears burned at his eyes, taking him by surprise. The earnest support in Bobby’s expression made him crumble. “I— I realized something about myself the other day.”
“Okay,” Bobby said, encouraging him to continue with a nod of his head.
“I’m bisexual,” Buck said quickly, getting the words out as fast as possible.
Bobby was quiet for a moment, digesting Buck’s words and making Buck sweat. But then he was cracking a wide smile and saying, “Thank you for telling me, kid. I’m so proud of you.”
Buck felt all the tension melt away. “Yeah?”
“Yeah,” Bobby nodded. He stood up and held out his arms, unsurprised when Buck shot up and collapsed against him. Bobby tucked Buck against his chest and hugged him tightly.
“You’re sure you’re okay with it?” Buck asked. He knew that Bobby had never been anything but accepting with Hen but there was still that kernel of anxiety that sat in his chest, weighing him down.
“Of course, Buck,” Bobby reassured him. “You love who you love and that’s that. I’m glad that you’ve figured this out.”
“Me too,” Buck said, pulling away from the hug. “I feel…free in a way that I’ve never felt before,” He admitted shyly.
“Well, it’s a pretty big thing to discover so that makes sense,” Bobby said, putting his hand on Buck’s shoulder and squeezing. “So that’s why you’ve been so jumpy?”
“Yeah,” Buck looked down at his hands. “I want to tell everyone I’m just…nervous.”
“You know they’ll give you nothing but support, right?”
“I know,” Buck nodded. “I just…it’s hard to find the words, I guess. I’ve told Maddie and now you, I guess I should tell the rest of them, huh?”
“Who you tell, and when, is up to you, son. We’re your family, we’ll be here when you’re ready,” Bobby said quietly.
“Yeah, that’s what Maddie said,” Buck gave him a small smile. “I think I’m almost ready.”
“You don’t have to rush, you can let it happen when it happens,” Bobby advised. “Whatever it is you choose, just make sure it’s what’s best for you.”
Buck swallowed roughly, his throat going tight again as emotion rushed through him. He’d known Bobby would be supportive but he hadn’t expected how it would affect him, to have the man he saw as a father figure accept him with total ease, not even an ounce of hesitation. “Thank you, Bobby,” Buck said sincerely. “You have no idea what this means to me.”
Bobby just hugged him again and Buck let a breath, hugging back just as tightly. When they separated Bobby cleared his throat. “Now, go on. You must have somewhere to be on a Friday night.”
“Actually,” Buck ducked his head. “Our date is tomorrow.”
“Good for you, kid,” Bobby smiled. “You have fun and stay safe.”
“You got it, Cap,” Buck saluted, grinning as he walked to the door and let himself out of the office. He walked out of the station smiling and whistling to himself, feeling so light and carefree.
Two down, a few more to go.

I think part of what brings Steve and Bucky together, from the very start of their friendship, is that both of them grew up with strong mothers who raised them to have an even stronger sense of justice.
Jewish-American women in particular have a long and rich history at the forefront of many movements for social advancement for marginalized people; a notable example being Brenda Howard, a bisexual Jewish woman dubbed "the mother of pride".
I can clearly see Winnifred Barnes being an active member of the National Federation of Temple Sisterhoods (now known as Women of Reform Judaism), a Jewish group with a long history of social and political activism both inside and outside of the Jewish community.
In 1965 the group adopted a resolution which called for the decriminalization of homosexuality and condemned homophobia from within the Jewish community. Winnie would have been the resolution's biggest supporter. Keeping the memory of her son alive, and ensuring it be a blessing for countless others, by fighting to build the world that she wished he had gotten to experience, that unbeknownst to her, he would get to live in with the very man she knew he'd been in love with for so long.
How deeply indescribably affirming and emotional it would be for Bucky, many years down the line, to get to experience a world where he could be himself, and to learn that, not only would his family have accepted him, but his mother actively fought so others like him could have this freedom to love and the Jewish community would embrace them with open arms.

Where is the promised romcom?
So I’ve been mulling something over in my head for days now. In one of his cameos/interview Lou said that Tim called him up to play Tommy again and that he would eventually get involved with Buck. He said that Tim wanted to create some kind of a romcom situation for Buck. (Did Tim mention the same thing in an interview somewhere? Or did I just make that up in my head? I’m not sure. I thought he said something in the same vein, but I might be wrong. Not that it’s relevant to this post.)
Well, where is the romcom?
Buck and Tommy basically met in 7x03, exchanged one simple look and then nothing until 7x04 where he spent all of this time obsessing over Eddie having a new friend, only to reveal in the end that he liked Tommy. (Which… really? Even Tommy was all ‘My attention?’ Are you sure about that?) Cue Buck and Tommy kiss. Then in 7x05 they go on a very awkward date. Buck ends up saying something very dumb, so Tommy leaves. In the end he asks him to meet for coffee and they reconcile. (Then Buck proceeds to be dumb again as he asks Tommy to be his date to his sister’s wedding. Which is sooo not a good idea for a second date. But whatever.) I’m sure we’ll see them being cute together at the wedding and there might even be a dance and/or kiss. But it’s all so bland and uninteresting. Where's the chemistry? Where’s the tension?
So again, where is the romcom in this scenario?
Compare it to this:
Buck and Eddie meet in season 2. When Buck sees Eddie for the first time ‘Whatta man’ is playing as introduction music. There is some hostility at first, but they get over it pretty quickly. They become fast best friends that help each other through hardships. They support each other through the lawsuit (which hurts their friendship, but only briefly), the tsunami, the firetruck falling on top of Buck’s leg, the shooting, the Eddie breakdown, different relationships… They are there for each other, through everything. Buck also forms a very tight bond with Eddie’s son: Christopher.
Next to that, they are there for each other on an emotional level. They understand each other better than anyone else. They’re like two peas in a pod.
So basically, they are a unit at this point. Sure, they still see each other as best friends, but that isn’t a problem, because best friends realise they’re in love with each other all the time in romcoms.
This is such a great set up for a romcom. They love each other through and through, but never considered there might be more to it. (Although I still headcanon that Eddie knows exactly how he feels about Buck. He has known since the shooting. But that’s neither here nor there.) Now one of them comes out as bisexual (which again YAY!) and the other will be forced to rethink their relationship. Eddie will see Buck and Tommy together and he will be confronted with them at the wedding. Romcom-wise this could be an excellent opportunity to introduce some feelings of discomfort in Eddie, when he sees them together. Or they could go with the romcom trope of the current ‘boyfriend’ (Even though Tommy isn’t his boyfriend yet. They haven’t even gone out on a second date.) realising that his love interest is completely gone over his best friend and gently remind him of that or make him realise that’s what it is. Or maybe they will reveal to us that Eddie has been aware of his feelings all this time, he just didn’t think he ever stood a chance with Buck.
There are so many ways to go with this scenario. If it’s just bucktommy, there is no real romcom scenario to explore. But if you add Buddie to that story, it just becomes so much more interesting and potentially romcommy (Is that even a word?).
This isn’t saying that Eddie (nor Buck for that matter) doesn’t still have a lot to unpack in his personal life and that everything will be peachy with Buck as soon as they realise they are into each other, but it will set up a great narrative for them to try to ‘hide’ their feelings from each other, telling other people while trying to act ‘normal’ when they’re spending time together. Eddie still thinking bucktommy are together, when in reality they have become just friends. Buck thinking that Eddie would never be interested in him because he is ‘straight’. Endless romcom scenarios to choose from right there.
Finally, I know there has been a rumour going around that Buck won’t be able to afford his loft anymore and he’ll move in with Eddie. It’s just speculation based on a few random facts and observations, but I swear, if we get this scenario? I will ascend! It would be the peak romcom scenario: Two friends moving in together while one of them (or maybe both?) is still possibly in a relationship? I have seen this movie before, many times. And let me tell you… the people forced to co-habit because of outside circumstances? They always end up together.
TLDR, in the end, in a romcom you want the audience to cheer on the couple with the deepest connection and chemistry. The superficial love interest (Which fits Tommy to a T. I mean, what do we even know about the guy? Nothing, only that he is brought in to help Buck out of the closet. What does Buck know about him? Not a lot. He hardly spends time with him before he gets kissed by him.) never turns out to be ‘the one’.
I don’t know guys. All of this just makes so much sense to me. Only time will tell if I’m right (or wrong).

now that i’ve had all night to process that bisexual evan buckley is now canon, here are my thoughts of 7x04. THIS CONTAINS SPOILERS IF YOU HAVEN’T WATCHED IT.
1. the way i was getting so much second hand embarrassment from buck trying to impress eddie and get his attention, just for eddie to ignore him???
2. i’m sad they recasted harry but elijah was amazing. his emotions during that scene with athena were just perfect. now i miss may more.
3. “does it have a heart around it” maddie kills me. the way she knows buck is in love with eddie but wants him to figure it out himself.
4. THAT ENTURE SCENE I WAS LIKE “why are they so close?” “it would be so funny if they kissed right now” my little gay heart is jumping for joy.
5. the 911 call for this episode was really sad. that poor woman not even knowing she killed her son.
6. the promo for next week??? buck really looked like “he’s right behind me isn’t he?” i’ve seen ‘leaks’ of 05 but idk how true they are. we know tommy isn’t going to be around long and the still of buck being chocked too???? i can’t wait to see eddie find buck on the date. and have buck come out to everybody because i know they’re all going to be so supportive and loving.
7. abc did in four episodes what other channels couldn’t do in 6 seasons

I absolutely love your character Val! I'm a newer follower so I don't know much about him, but I love whenever you draw him. could you tell me more about his story? or how he ended up with Danse or even what their dynamic with each other is?
Ah thank you <3 I used to post more "lore" stuff on here and theres a bunch if you go way back in his tag, but in the last year I've just been kind of posting a lot of out-of-context and au stuff with no connection.
Him and Danse are both very opinionated men, and those opinions rarely align. They spend about as much time arguing as they do getting along, their relationship through most of the game is equal parts mutual pining and divorced.
They are finally able to acknowledge their feelings for each other shortly before "The Nuclear Option", but mutually split afterwards while Danse tries to find himself and Val focuses on establishing a stable home for Shaun. They reconnect about a year later when the commonwealth is in less of a state of crisis, and are finally able to pursue their relationship.
You know what, I haven't posted anything about him in a while, who's ready for a
Tumblr media
This is not going to be very edited or formatted because I am a clown so. Sorry in advance.
A brief overview?
His "real" name is Vasili Gavriilovich Andonov but he goes by Valerie Anderson wherever he can, and does his best to hide his russian ancestry. He prefers people call him Val, though most of the brotherhood soldiers refer to him as Andonov. He hates people referring to him as Vasya or using his patronymic name, though thankfully there aren't a lot of people in the commonwealth who use russian naming conventions.
He's an autistic, bisexual, depressed alcoholic who indulges in stimulants a bit more than he should. He's surprisingly good at playing guitar, especially slide blues with his steel resonator guitar. He loves aircraft and built/painted scale models before the war. He's very lonely, even when around people who like him he never feels like he belongs. His birthday is Jan 12th, which is coincidentally a sort of holiday for the cryonics community.
He'll spend a lot of time looking inward and ruminating, and can identify a lot of his personal problems, but is not very good at "fixing" them. So he just kind of mopes around and wallows in self-loathing and self-pity. He's very gullible, and hates people messing with him. While he struggles a lot socially he is very intelligent, and is a genius with anything with an engine. Before the war he worked on vertibirds for the us military. His support of the brotherhood has nothing to do with their ideals; just that they keep him fed, paid, and let him work on aircraft. He's not particularly concerned with "saving" the commonwealth, he just wants to hurt the people who have hurt him.
Gameplay-wise, he's a melee/power armour build, with his highest stats INT and END. He can built so many weird and wonderful things that either explode or he can beat you to death with. Maybe both. His LCK and CHR are pretty miserable, nobody likes him and things are constantly going wrong. Playing a melee character in survival with MAIM is... a task.
Some sort of timeline?
He's the son of Russian immigrants who met in the US, His father Gavriil was an angry alcoholic who worked for the government and his mother Lidiya was a stay-at-home mom and a fervent christian. He had a sister, Kseniya, who was almost his opposite; a very polite and reserved child.
Valerie was small as a kid; being ginger, autistic, queer, and an immigrant made him a frequent target of his peers. Paired with his fathers physical and emotional abuse at home this made him a very angry and defensive person.
He spent most of his time away from home, preferring to spend his time in the woods around their home or just walking around town. He started smoking when he was 12 and drinking when he was 14, stealing from his father. As he got older he missed more and more school, spending his time committing petty crimes and getting into trouble.
While his father was more directly hostile his mother was equally overbearing in her own way. Val would identify himself as agnostic and having no belief in god, but for all of her preaching he still harbors a lot of “catholic guilt”, and fears that when he dies he will go to hell.
As he got older he quickly sprung from a small kid to a tall, muscular teenager. While he never learned to get along with his peers he learned to adapt an imposing, aggressive and masculine personality to defend himself.
When Val became too large for his father to easily push around he turned his anger towards Kseniya, whom Val was fiercely protective of. This only raised tensions at home, and Val and his father would get in frequent physical altercations. He contemplated leaving when he was 16 and could drive, but didn’t want to abandon his sister.
Eventually things came to a head when both of them had been drinking and Valerie came home late. Their fight got particularly nasty, and Val broke a bottle over his fathers head. He was immediately out cold, and Val was left shocked, covered in his fathers blood, believing he had just killed him. This would haunt him for the rest of his life.
Kseniya was home at the time, and ran in when she heard the yelling. Val tried to convince her to come with him, but she was shocked and terrified and refused to leave. Fearing retribution, and before he could really process what he had done, Val took any cash he could and the keys to his fathers car and fled.
He sold his fathers car and got something less traceable, which he lived out of for the next several years while he jumped around state to state. He picked up the occasional day job, but mostly supported himself by stealing cars and running drugs.
After he left is when he began going by Valerie Anderson. At first it was out of fear that he was wanted under his legal name, but he soon realized how much better people treated him if he had an “american” name.
When he was 20 he was eventually picked up for a minor offense, but given the political climate at the time he was offered the opportunity to join the military rather than face charges. As much as Val hated the government he was still very afraid of being connected to his fathers murder, and jumped at the chance to avoid any legal issues.
In his time in the military he discovered a love for aircraft, and pursued it doggedly. He got his GED, and went on to earn a masters in aerospace engineering. He never bothered with friends or relationships, he put all of his time into education and work. Lived and breathed for aircraft.
While Val enjoyed his job he continued to struggle with his mental health and substance abuse. He would frequently get into fights, eventually he got into a bar fight bad enough he nearly killed someone, getting the scars on his face at the same time.
While he was in trouble with the law he would end up working with his new attorney, Laura Walsh. She was elegant, graceful, composed, brilliant, persuasive, someone who always got what she wanted. And had terrible taste in men. Before the case was even over they started hooking up.
Their relationship was strictly friends-with-benefits, neither of them really cared for the other as a person and it was just sex. Over time, despite their best efforts, they came to see past the carefully crafted personas that they both presented to the world and fell in love with the people behind them.
He was 29 when they met, and they married less than 3 years later. They were moved to Boston for Val’s work, and it seemed like they would be staying for a while so they tried to establish themselves. Val tried to quit drinking around this time but struggled to face reality sober for the first time, and frequently slipped back.
Laura had always wanted children but Val was initially very against the idea. He still held a lot of unaddressed trauma from his own childhood and did not feel that he could ever be a good father.
Eventually Laura convinced him otherwise, and he agreed, again making an effort to clean himself up. When she fell pregnant his anxiety led to him having a breakdown at work, afterward he admitted himself to an inpatient rehab and spent 6 weeks there. From here until the start of the game was probably the best time of his life; sober, medicated and attending regular therapy sessions.
While Val was worried about his capacity to be a father, as soon as Shaun was born he lost that. That kid was his life, he did everything for him. He stayed on a break from work while Laura returned to practice, being a stay-at-home dad and throwing himself into domestic life. He even built a robot housekeeper!
His sister tracked him down somewhere around here and they began communicating through the post. She reveals that his father survived the attack, and was still alive, though she hadn’t spoken to him in years. They were planning to meet in person in the winter, though obviously that didn’t happen.
He was 33 when he went into the vault, and the main fo4 plot takes ~3 years to complete, but I think I’ve made this post long enough and I am too drunk and tired to keep typing. Safe to say hijinks ensue.
tl;dr hes an orange cringefail loser, and im hopelessly in love with him.

What do you think of Emma's opinion on Rhaenicent?
Has Emma commented on Rhaenicent? I haven’t seen anything in regard to this particular ship one way or the other.
It doesn’t matter anyway, actors can ship what they want, my only hope is that it doesn’t come at the expense of their characters. For Emma I doubt this would even be a problem as Rhaenyra is more popular than Rhaenicent, the exact opposite of Olivia’s situation where she has to deal with the fact Rhaenicent is more popular than Alicent.
I honestly love how much Emma loves Rhaenyra, they respect her strengths and tragedy, the writers may treat her with disdain but Emma doesn’t. This is highlighted perfectly by the contrast in Ryan’s dismissive attitude towards Luke compared to Emma expressing Rhaenyra’s pain in such a profound manner people still quote it.
Ryan’s treating Luke’s death as nothing more than a minor inconvenience, something Rhaenyra will simply get over to maintain the idea “there’s still hope” for Rhaenicent. Emma’s doing the exact opposite, emphasising Rhaenyra has never felt this level of indescribable pain before, not even after losing both parents and Harwin. They perfectly articulate how “losing Luke tells her she knows nothing about grief” because their priority is Rhaenyra, not a fabricated ship which only exists on account of HBO not wanting an openly bisexual leading lady who would be romantically involved with a black woman.
So unlike Olivia who is more than happy to throw the entirety of Team Green under the bus to continue the illusion that Alicent’s no.1 priority will always be Rhaenyra, Emma knows there isn’t a universe in existence where Rhaenyra would abandon her family for the woman who stole her throne. I can also see why Olivia’s pushing for a Rhaenicent reunion at the end of Season 2, but I honestly don’t see Emma being in favour of this as it does absolutely nothing for Rhaenyra.
Who knows, maybe Emma does like Rhaenicent or maybe with the introduction of Sabitha Vypren and Black Ally they’re hoping Rhaenyra gets a brand new love interest all together. Either way I don’t think their opinion was even considered because Rhaenicent 2.0 isn’t for Rhaenyra and Team Black, hell you can even argue it’s not for Alicent and Team Green either. It’s solely to continue Ryan’s fanfiction, which is coming at the expense of good writing, and for Olivia to hold onto fan support by warping Alicent into a shell of a woman who has no personality outside of secretly longing for the woman who orders the killing of her grandson.
To be clear I’m not criticising Olivia for liking Rhaenicent, my criticism is with her prioritising it over Alicent.
It just seems to me when you compare and contrast the Rhaenicent they’re hoping for in Season 2 to Emma’s emotional insight into Rhaenyra’s actual character they are on opposing ends. Ryan isn’t able to quite grasp the longterm repercussions of Luke’s death whilst Emma is fully aware that any shred of affection Rhaenyra may have still held for her stepmother died with her beloved son.

Tagged by @messiahzzz – thank you! I don’t think I’ve ever really talked about Tynera on my blog, but I did promise myself I would share more of my creations in 2024, soooo...
Tumblr media
A quick rundown – she’s a seldarine drow who turned her back on Lolth when she found her way to the cult of Lathander, and subsequently became a cleric of his.
In BG3, she chooses to see the tadpole as a test to show that she can persevere through adversity and bring light and new beginning to the darkness, as Lathander teaches. She made generally “good” choices and romanced Lae’zel. As of the epilogue, the two of them are living together close to where Shadowheart made her cottage, raising Xan as their son and supporting the liberation of the Githyanki people from afar.
Basics
- Full name: Tynera Maerret
- Gender: cis female
- Sexuality: bisexual with a strong tendency towards women
- Pronouns: She/her
Other
- Family: House Maerret – a minor noble drow house I created
Father: Kinastyrr Osviir
Mother: Laraea Maerret
Grandmother/main childhood attachment figure: Neerlinva Maerret
Birthplace: Maerimydra
- Job: Cleric of Lathander – I imagine that she’s pretty far down any hierarchy, as she hasn’t been a cleric very long yet.
- Phobias: if any, a light case of agoraphobia
- Guilty pleasures: spending days on end in luxury baths, expensive jewellery. Also whatever the Faerûnian equivalent of violent slasher movies is.
- Hobbies: dancing, singing, poetry performance – she doesn’t really write herself, but she enjoys reciting poetry with friends
Morals
- Alignment: Lawful Good
 - Sins: Pride, Greed, Gluttony
- Virtues: Determination, Idealism, Compassion, Courage
This or That
- Introvert / Extrovert
- Organized / Disorganized
- Close-minded / Open-minded
- Calm / Anxious / Restless
- Disagreeable / Agreeable / In between
 - Cautious / Reckless / In between
- Patient / Impatient / In between
- Outspoken / Reserved / In between
- Leader / Follower / Flexible
- Empathetic / Unempathetic / In between
- Optimist / Pessimist / Realist
- Traditional / Modern / In between
- Hard-working / Lazy
Relationships
- OTP: Lae’zel/Tynera — it started as a fling, but honestly neither of them is made for casual arrangements. Tynera fell very quickly for Lae’zel’s resilience and devotion. It takes longer for Lae’zel to allow herself to recognise her feelings, but once she does, she melts into Tynera's warmth like a cat basking in a ray of sunshine.
Lae’zel calls Tynera, as in canon, “zhak vo'nfynh duj” – my joy. Tynera calls Lae’zel “sussun ussta” – my light.
- Acceptable Ships: none.
- OT3: see above – Tynera would probably be open to having sex with others, but she respects Lae’zel’s wishes for exclusivity. On an emotional level, she is also monogamous.
- Brotp: Yes ->
-  Gale/Tynera— they are both fairly passionate in their respective fields and are glad that they don’t have to hold back in the other’s presence. Gale’s more relaxed level-headedness helps Tynera shed some of her more impulsive and judgemental tendencies. Likewise, Gale basks in Tynera’s unwavering support and affection.
- Shadowheart/Tynera — In the beginning, they butt heads a lot, since their gods are explicit enemies. Over the course of the game, they start to realise that they have much more in common than sets them apart. Shadowheart helps Tynera find ways to incorporate her faith in their daily lives, when they are in the shadow-cursed lands, where it’s difficult to perform sun-related rituals. They also share a taste for the macabre.
- Notp: none, she gets along with almost anyone. Though, now that I’ve finished her PT, I don’t think it makes sense for her to end up with anyone of the companions but Lae’zel.
Tagging: @faerielli, @zerfindung, @kaldurcalm, @lewdisescariot, @ghastlytofu, @athousandcowboys and whoever also wants to do this!

THIS DAY IN GAY HISTORY

529 Constantinople  : Emperor Justinian I re-wrote Roman Law, making it distinctly Christian and stating that all same-sex acts are contrary to nature and punishable by death.

Tumblr media
1786 – On this date William Rufus King, the U.S. Representative from North Carolina, Senator from Alabama, and the thirteenth Vice President of the United States was born (d.1853). Historians have argued about the extremely close relationship that King had with President James Buchanan.
King was close friends with James Buchanan, and the two shared a house in Washington, D.C. for fifteen years prior to Buchanan's presidency. Buchanan and King's close relationship prompted Andrew Jackson to refer to King as "Miss Nancy" and "Aunt Fancy", while Aaron V. Brown spoke of the two as "Buchanan and his wife". Further, some of the contemporary press also speculated about Buchanan and King's relationship.
Buchanan and King's nieces destroyed their uncles' correspondence, leaving some questions as to what relationship the two men had, but surviving letters illustrate the affection of a special friendship, and Buchanan wrote of his communion with his housemate. Buchanan wrote in 1844, after King left for France,
"I am now solitary and alone, having no companion in the house with me. I have gone a wooing to several gentlemen, but have not succeeded with any one of them. I feel that it is not good for man to be alone; and should not be astonished to find myself married to some old maid who can nurse me when I am sick, provide good dinners for me when I am well, and not expect from me any very ardent or romantic affection."
While the circumstances surrounding Buchanan and King have led authors such as Paul Boller to speculate that Buchanan was "America's first homosexual president", there is no direct evidence that he and King had a sexual relationship

Wood Self-portrait
1901 – John Christopher Wood (d.1930), often called Kit Wood, was an English painter born in Knowsley, near Liverpool.
Christopher Wood was born son of Doctor Lucius Wood. He briefly flirted with medicine and architecture at Liverpool University before pursuing an artistic career. At Liverpool University, Wood met Augustus John, who encouraged him to be a painter. The French collector Alphonse Kahn invited him to Paris in 1920. From 1921 he trained as a painter at the Academie Julian in Paris, where he met Picasso, Jean Cocteau, Georges Auric and Diaghilev. He travelled around Europe and north Africa between 1922 and 1924. He also collaborated with and became the lover of painter Francis Rose.
In 1926 Wood created designs for Romeo and Juliet for Diaghilev's Ballets Russes, although they were never used. The same year he became a member of both the London Group and the Seven and Five Society plus meeting and befriending Ben Nicholson and Winifred Nicholson.
Wood was bisexual. In the early summer of 1921, Wood met Antonio de Gandarillas, a Chilean diplomat. Gandarillas, a married homosexual fourteen years older than Wood, lived a glamorous life partly financed by gambling. Their relationship lasted through Wood's life, surviving his affair with Jeanne Bourgoint. In 1927 his plans to elope and marry heiress Meraud Guinness were frustrated by her parents whereupon he required emotional support from Winifred Nicholson. Wood also had a liaison with a Russian émigrée, Frosca Munster, whom he met in 1928.
By 1930, addicted to opium and painting frenetically in preparation for his Wertheim exhibition in London, he suffered paranoia and began carrying a revolver. On August 21 he travelled to meet his mother and sister for lunch at 'The County Hotel' in Salisbury and to show them a selection of his latest paintings. After saying goodbye he jumped under a train at Salisbury railway station, although in deference to his mother's wishes it was reported as an accident.

1907 – Violette Leduc, French author, born (d.1972); Leduc was born in Arras, Pas de Calais, France, the illegitimate daughter of a servant girl, Berthe. In Valenciennes, the young Violette spent most of her childhood suffering from poor self-esteem, exacerbated by her mother's hostility and overprotectiveness. She developed tender friendships with her grandmother Fideline and her maternal aunt Laure. Her formal education, begun in 1913, was interrupted by World War I. After the war, she went to a boarding school, the Collège de Douai, where she experienced Lesbian affairs with a classmate and a music instructor who was fired over the incident.
In 1926, Leduc moved to Paris and enrolled in the Lycée Racine. That same year, she failed her baccalaureate exam and began working as a telephone operator and secretary at Plon publishers.
In 1932 she met Maurice Sachs and Simone de Beauvoir, who encouraged her to write. Her first novel L'Asphyxie (In the Prison of Her Skin) was published by Albert Camus for Éditions Gallimard and earned her praise from Jean-Paul Sartre, Jean Cocteau and Jean Genet.
In 1955, Leduc was forced to remove part of her novel Ravages because of sexually explicit passages describing lesbianism. The censored part was eventually published as a separate novella, Thérèse and Isabelle in 1966. Another novel, Le Taxi caused controversy because of its depiction of incest between a brother and sister.
Leduc's best-known book, the memoir La Bâtarde, was published in 1964. It quickly became a bestseller. She went on to write eight more books, including La Folie en tête (Mad in Pursuit), the second part of her literary autobiography.
In 1968 Radley Metzger made a film of Leduc's novel Thérèse and Isabelle. The film was a commercial feature about adolescent lesbian love, starring Essy Persson and Anna Gael.
Leduc developed breast cancer and died aged 65 after two operations.

Young Harry Hay - Activist
1912 – Harry Hay, the founder of the Mattachine Society and the Radical Faeries, was born on this date (d.2002).
Although Harry Hay claimed 'never to have even heard' of the earlier Gay liberation struggle in Germany - by the people around Adolf Brand, Magnus Hirschfeld and Leontine Sagan - he is known to have talked about it with European emigres in America including Mattachine co-founder Rudi Gernreich. (However, Gernreich arrived in America at age 14, and Hay had already written his Gay manifesto when they met).
Hay, along with Roger Barlow and LeRoy Robbins directed a short film Even As You and I (1937) featuring Hay, Barlow, and filmmaker Hy Hirsh. A married man (beard/wife Anita Platky) and a member of the Communist Party USA, Hay composed the first manifesto of the American Gay rights movement in 1948, writing:
"We, the Androgynes of the world, have formed this responsible corporate body to demonstrate by our efforts that our physiological and psychological handicaps need be no deterrent in integrating ten percent of the world's population towards the constructive social progress of mankind."
Hay soon dispensed with the apologetic language and ideas. Though it may seem very dated today, the group was very radical compared to the rest of society at the time. It and Hay were among the first to advance the argument that Gay people represented a "cultural minority" as well as being just individuals, and even called for public marches of homosexuals, predicting later Gay pride parades.
Hay's concept of the "cultural minority" came directly from his Marxist studies, and the rhetoric he and his colleague Charles Rowland employed often reflected the militancy of Communist tradition. As the Mattachine Society grew with chapters around the country, the organization saw the Communist ties of its founders, including Hay, as a threat during that McCarthy-ite witch-hunt era, and expelled them from leadership. The organization took a more cautious tack so that by the time of the Stonewall riots the Mattachine Society came to be seen by many as stodgy and assimilationist.
The Communist Party did not allow Gays to be members, claiming that homosexuality was a 'deviation'; perhaps more important was the fear that a member's (usually secret) homosexuality would leave them open to blackmail and was a security risk in an era of red-baiting. Concerned to save the party difficulties, as he put more energy into the Mattachine Society, Hay himself had approached the CP's leaders and recommended his own expulsion. However, after much soul-searching, the CP, clearly reeling at the loss of a respected member and theoretician of 18 years standing, refused to expel Hay, instead dropping him as a 'security risk' but ostentatiously announcing him to be a 'Lifelong Friend of the People'.

Hay in later years
Hay later became an outspoken critic of Gay assimilationism and went on to help found both Jesse Jackson's Rainbow Coalition and the Gay men's group the Radical Faeries, as well as being active in the Native American movements.
Hay once explained,
"We pulled an ugly green frog skin of heterosexual conformity over us, and that's how we got through school with a full set of teeth. We know how to live through their eyes. We can always play their games, but are we denying ourselves by doing this? If you're going to carry the skin of conformity over you, you are going to suppress the beautiful prince or princess within you."

Harry Hay and the Radical Faeries
In 1963, at age 51, he met an inventor named John Burnside, who became his life partner. They lived first in Los Angeles, and later in a Pueblo Indian reserve in New Mexico. After returning to Los Angeles to help organize the first Radical Faerie gathering, the couple moved to San Francisco, where Hay died of lung cancer at age 90. Hay was the subject of the 2002 documentary by Eric Slade, "Hope along the Wind: The Life of Harry Hay" (2002).

1912 – Academy Award nominated songwriter Jack Lawrence was born on this date (d.2009). He wrote about his being Gay in his 2004 autobiography, They All Sang My Songs. He was a gay man during a time when it was astronomically difficult to be one.
In addition to fun stories about divas ranging from Tallulah Bankhead to Cher, his book They All Sang My Songs covered his discreet queer life (he was closeted until sometime in his thirties), during which he attended gay "rent parties" in Harlem, and cruised Central Park for sex.
In 1945, met the love of his life, Walter Myden, who remained with Lawrence until he died 30 years later. Then Lawrence and Richard Debnam—who actually became Richard Lawrence when Jack adopted him in 1979—shared their love, with Richard more like the son he never had, Jack explained. "I think I would've been a good parent," the songwriter said, adding that not having children may have been his one regret. His songs, though, will live on longer than any child would have.
You probably know his songs through recordings like the Ink Spots' "If I Didn't Care", Rosemary Clooney's "Tenderly" and Frank Sinatra's "All Or Nothing At All" which was Sinatra's first solo hit.
Hearing his music now one can hear the sentiment of one who had to shield his life, or fight for its full acceptance, especially in "All Or Nothing At All" which has been recorded by Sinatra, Jimmy Scott, John Coltrane, Chet Baker and Diana Krall, to name just a few of its interpreters. Reading those lyrics it's easy to take it as an anthem of living and loving openly.
Lawrence died on March 16, 2009 at age 96 after a fall in his home in Redding, Connecticut. He was survived by Richard Debnam-Lawrence.

1915 – Gay diva and Jazz legend Billie Holiday was born today (d.1959). Nicknamed "Lady Day" by her friend and musical partner Lester Young, Holiday had a seminal influence on jazz and pop singing. Her vocal style, strongly inspired by jazz instrumentalists, pioneered a new way of manipulating phrasing and tempo.
Critic John Bush wrote that Holiday "changed the art of American pop vocals forever." She co-wrote only a few songs, but several of them have become jazz standards, notably "God Bless the Child," "Don't Explain," "Fine and Mellow," and "Lady Sings the Blues." She also became famous for singing "Easy Living," "Good Morning Heartache," and "Strange Fruit", a protest song which became one of her standards and was made famous with her 1939 recording.
Billie lived it up with a vengeance, and had a huge appetite for drink, drugs, men and women. She had an affair with actor and director Orson Welles, and also had a number of lesbian affairs - including one with Tallulah Bankhead. According to one of the later and better biographies she would call herself 'William' when she was sexually interested in a particular women.

STRANGE FRUIT Southern trees bear a strange fruit, Blood on the leaves and blood at the root, Black body swinging in the Southern breeze, Strange fruit hanging from the poplar trees. Pastoral scene of the gallant South, The bulging eyes and the twisted mouth, Scent of magnolia sweet and fresh, And the sudden smell of burning flesh! Here is a fruit for the crows to pluck, For the rain to gather, for the wind to suck, For the sun to rot, for a tree to drop, Here is a strange and bitter crop.
As Billie Holiday later told the story, a single gesture by a patron at New York's Café Society, in Greenwich Village, changed the history of American music in early 1939, the night when she first sang "Strange Fruit." Café Society was New York's only truly integrated nightclub outside Harlem, a place catering to progressive types with open minds. But Holiday was to recall that even there she was afraid to sing this new song, and regretted it, at least momentarily, when she first did. "There wasn't even a patter of applause when I finished," she later said. "Then a lone person began to clap nervously. Then suddenly everyone was clapping."
The applause grew louder and less tentative as "Strange Fruit" became a nightly ritual for Holiday, then one of her signature songs, at least where it could be safely performed. And audiences have continued to applaud this disturbing ballad, unique in Holiday's oeuvre and in the American popular- song repertoire, as it has left its mark on generations of writers, musicians, and listeners, both black and white. The late jazz writer Leonard Feather once called "Strange Fruit" "the first significant protest in words and music, the first unmuted cry against racism." Jazz musicians still speak of it with a mixture of awe and fear - "When Holiday recorded it, it was more than revolutionary," said the drummer Max Roach – and perform it almost gingerly. "It's like rubbing people's noses in their own shit," said Mal Waldron, the pianist who accompanied Holiday in her final years. A few years back a British music publication, Q Magazine, named "Strange Fruit" one of 10 songs that actually changed the world.

1919 – Theophilus Brown (d.2012) was an American artist. He became prominent as a member of the Bay Area Figurative Movement.
A descendant of early-American intellectuals, Brown was born in Moline, Illinois. His great-grandfather was friends with Ralph Waldo Emerson and Henry David Thoreau. Brown's father was an inventor and chief designer, at the John Deere Company in Moline, Illinois.
While attending Yale University in the late-1930s, Brown met composer Paul Hindemith and poet May Sarton, with whom he would share lifetime friendships.
After graduating in 1941, Brown was drafted in World War II. Following his discharge, he began to study painting, moving between New York City and Paris, meeting an impressive range of artists that included Pablo Picasso, Braque, Giacometti, Balthus, and de Kooning, among others. Brown, who studied piano at Yale, was also close to a number of composers, including John Cage, Francis Poulenc, Samuel Barber, and Igor Stravinsky.
In 1952 Brown enrolled in the graduate studio program at the University of California, Berkeley, joining a group of artists—including Richard Diebenkorn David Park, Elmer Bischoff, James Weeks, and Nathan Oliveira —that would later be known as the Bay Area Figurative Movement. While attending Berkeley, Brown also met and fell in love with his long-time partner and fellow-painter, Paul Wonner.
In the early 1960s, Brown and Wonner moved to Santa Monica, where they developed a close friendship with fellow gay couple, novelist Christopher Isherwood, and portrait artist Don Bachardy. Over the years, Brown and Wonner also fostered friendships with playwright William Inge, composer and conductor Andre Previn, actress Eva Marie Saint and her husband, director Jeffery Hayden, and New Zealand novelist Janet Frame.

Figurative 1964
In his later years, Brown still managed to paint daily. Theophilus Brown resided in San Francisco, California at the time of his death. Four months before his death, Brown gave an interview in which he fact-checked his Wikipedia entry. He found the entry accurate, on the whole, but termed his classification as an abstract expressionist "horseshit." He died in San Francisco, aged 92.

1991 – Travis Flores is an American activist, philanthropist, motivational speaker, actor and children's book author. He has been featured in works such as Chicken Soup for the Soul, Readers Digest: Selections, Charlie's Cancer Rescue and The Lemonade Stand. Flores has cystic fibrosis and has spoken very openly about it, having served as a spokesperson for various cystic fibrosis related fundraisers. He is best known for his charitable work with both the Make-A-Wish Foundation and the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation, and has donated a majority of his book's proceeds to the two organizations. To date, he has helped to raise over half a million dollars for the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation. Flores also established his own organization in 2005, which provides laptops to chronically ill youth in hospitals.
When Flores was twelve years old, he began work with illustrator Michelle Ciappa to prepare his children's book, "The Spider Who Never Gave Up", for publishing. In 2004, after the book was published when Flores was thirteen, he began a motivational speaking and book tour. In the same year, June 18 was proclaimed by Mayor Michael Mullen as "Travis Flores Day" in Marietta, Ohio; a city near his hometown of Newport, Ohio. A year later, Flores partnered with Disney to print an edition of his book for a Make-A-Wish Foundation event, in which two million dollars was donated to the charity. The media attention and success of the event enabled Flores to extend his tour another two years.
Flores started college when he was sixteen years old and received his bachelor's degree in Acting from Marymount Manhattan College by the age of twenty. In 2010, during his work as an undergraduate student, he had the opportunity to work with Susan Batson on the Broadway workshops of the Tennessee Williams play, In Masks Outrageous and Austere. In 2012, the play opened at Culture Project theater in New York City, but Flores was no longer affiliated with the project. While working in New York City, he attended New York University and graduated in Spring of 2013 with a master's degree in Fundraising.
On March 3, 2015, Flores successfully received a double-lung transplant at Ronald Reagan UCLA Medical Center. Following the operation, he continued his work in entertainment, and later underwent a second double-lung transplant October 3, 2017 at the same medical facility.
In May 2019, Flores came out as gay on the CW series MyLastDays, making him the first person to ever come out on the network. Flores currently resides in Los Angeles, California with his male partner. He continues to pursue his philanthropic outreaches, acting, and writing.

Genuinely. Red white and royal blue was gorgeous.
It's healing.
Fucking phenomenal.
It's hope. It's a future worth having and wanting, even when you feel trapped in the past (like prince henry), when you feel like you might fall off a cliff if you take the leap (Alex saying he loves him, trying to win an election that changes the whole direction a country goes and if people like Alex can even fucking exist safely, Henry's life being determined by if the populace can accept or discard him when the existing historical powers only seek to repress, the fucking WAY this movie goes opposite to so many romcoms and so much "soft bl" type stories by being so overtly fucking political is good actually. It's fucking great. It's like this, Florida is telling kids they can't know gay people exist and this movie is saying we can fucking be politicians, we can be in love, we can change the world, we can be what children aspire to in making their world better and kinder to all. It's like. The message. The message to make a son of a president bisexual and in a spotlight in a current world where they're making laws we can't even be out. Cause that's rhe world we want. And we know it's not the world we may have and we may lose that right at any time but we're fucking brave and we are going to fucking exist and we DO want a world where we fucking get to be us as loudly and happily and joyfully and hopefully as everyone, and where we Matter and can do so much fucking good by existing and trying our best.
And then like. They cast Uma Thurman as the president! God!
And like. they PLAYED CANT HELP FALLING IN LOVE. THE SONG. THE SONG!!!!!! listen I never read twist and shout that destiel fic, but I know culturally it's SUCH a song, it's a song i remember singing about lovers and so many people think fondly of their loves with THAT song and it was so perfectly and beautifully used in this movie.
The decision to be clear about queer sexuality in this movie. Superb. Fucking phenomenal, like the whole movie. So often queerness is sanitized, downplayed, considered inherently "unsafe" (which leads to the laws attempting to harm us), and so to make the romance as sexual as any straight movie fucking THANK YOU. To make it romantic, to not shy away from that either, to not lessen its impact as inherently so romantic and sweet and intimate, the hands. The hands, a trademark of any good queer romance, such a beautiful use of hands as the reveal of emotion and love. I loved the care and tenderness put into it. And the realism oh my fucking God! The awkward conversation about making love! Sweet! Real! Real love is silly, awkward, imperfect and not smooth and so wonderful BECAUSE of that. Because real life isn't perfect but it is because that's the person that makes your world feel brighter and brings a smile to your face even when they say and do silly things! Queer people deserve it, we deserve that in our stories on our screens I loved it all.
I loved rhe writing and direction. To absolute pieces. I've seen cheesy shallow romcoms and while I admit there's good aspects to them, they're not for me. This was for me. And this had a lot of layers under the romance. Henry had a whole fucking personal arc I think a fuck ton of people cab relate to. The way him leaving is akin to people who've left me because they could NOT leave the closet the way I could. The way Alex having healthy parents changes SO much of this story and how healthily HE communicates and how much easier it is for him to act and solve problems, and how that support helps Henry respond to him and answer. And stand up for Himself once it's time to. And that says so fucking much about what parents can do, siblings (Henry's sister was amazing versus his brother), about how secure attachments can be healing, about how communicating more really can solve a fuck ton. Truly. It's truly the biggest key to getting through stuff. How the political is so inherent in Alex's past, present, future, how the movie doesn't have to address anything But the romance plot while STILL addressing so much. A world where Henry is a symbol "people love for their symbol" who gets loved for who he is and the future clashing with the past, progress and healing and growth versus history and conservatism and regression. There's so much fucking going on if you just watch. It's all worth hearing.
Alex being a great brave bi disaster I wouldn't have it any other fucking way. They say BISEXUAL IN THIS FUCKING MOVIE. If little 12 year old mejo had a movie do that I could've avoided so much trauma and isolatoon growing up! If I could live in a world as a child with people who said the word bi out loud and that it isn't silent? If I could live in a world where a politician was aloud to be bi growing up? God that could have been a kinder hopeful world for little mejo. And that is the world now, at least in one movie, and I want that for the little kids now who are living in a world with lawmakers that hate them but also so many people like us, like the writer of this novel and script, who want those children to feel SAFE and like they matter and they are allowed to take up space and WANT GOOD THINGS.
And of course, on a shallower level, I loved Alex. I loved him as a representation of what America could be. Which in a way I felt like while you can't summarize a nation with a single person, that's in a way what Alex and Henry felt like. Values slammed into real living people, and of course with the excellent writing they become so much MORE than shallow symbols (but in a weaker story they couldve been). But like. Yeah. I see it. Alex is brave, he isn't afraid to change the world for the better and want To. He wants to put in the effort. Be involved. He's not shy, he's not scared to love or hate or embarrass himself and pull himself back up and try again. His ego isn't critical and he will go across an ocean and at LEAST communicate and have a discussion and only take a real answer. His mom is HIS MOM and he's still got the guts to tell her who he is and his ideas (romantic AND political) and he was raised in the kind of loving family id hope many people get, a family that he knew would never imprison him or hurt him or reject him. He and Henry are not alike for their status as political figures. Despite appearances. Henry is of the same generation and I think he wants to help and make meaning of his life by making it useful for others. In that regard they click. But Henry was raised in rules, respects those social norms, is aware of and respectful of history in a way Alex is not (and to generalize I'd say the average non rich American I know is probably closer to Alex than Henry in terms of respect for meaningless rules and following history for the sake of it being how things were always done), Henry may not even be like the average person in his country. He's removed from them, isolated from them, stuck in this system of the past, and so walled up inside this system he doesn't get the privilege to simply Not Care. To simply not notice it. Alex remembers what it's like to be completely removed from it. Henry has been aware of it ever since he was 4 and had memories. There's so much to say about how the structure of the characters themselves represent various structures in the world. Alex and Henry are more than that. As characters they're people Actively Affected by those systems. But this story is so fucking fascinating on so many layers and I'm so GLAD. Thank you
Thank you.
This is the kind of movie I fucking wanted. Like, Love Simon was a great movie for the time It came out. And for the audience it was made for: teenagers, Disney movie target audience, who deserved a nice sweet childhood style romcom for them. Who had a million ones for other teenagers, so here's one with coming out in suburbia and sweet romances without much pain. Here's a High School musical type movie for a new generation. And it was good. And frankly it still is, it broke ground as a movie with overt queerness made for teenagers. And still it's probably one of the only ones, I can't think of many newer queer stories MADE INTO MOVIES specifically FOR kids. There's Heartstopper, but that's a standout, thank God for heartstopper too. And Heartstoppers a show so it has more time to do more for teens, show more characters and complications of teen life. I appreciate it deeply. But back to Love Simon: it's a one off. I think teens need 100 more movies like it. But adults? We also deserve 100 queer romcoms. And more movies like THIS, like Red White and Royal Blue. That are more then a quickly written poorly produced hallmark quality movie. That you sink your teeth into and could write essays about. That a straight person Says Pride and Prejudice is one of the BEST romance movies and we can say cool, here's 10 queer romance movies that are just as phenomenal. Anyway that's what this fucking movie is to me. You can disagree, tastes differ, totally valid babes you do you.
but OH MY GOD THEY PLAYED CANT HELP FALLING IN LOVE AND THE STORY IS TOLD BY A BISEXUAL DISASTER WHO EMBODIES SO MANY WONDERFUL QUALITIES I ASPIRE TO HAVE AND HOPE TO SEE MORE OF IN THE FUCKING WORLD.
And like. Henry. I'm gonna go read the book for him in case it's got more. I really think the movie did so many cool things with his personal character arc. That comments on family dynamics, the closet, the trauma of the past (and in many areas the current political regression and harm), the way historic systems control and damage people (both people inside and the entire wider populace they influence), the way things even in the Best circumstances can be truly Imperfect because that's the real world. In the real world, you can fall in love and there's nothing to do but try your best to keep being with each other as the world puts obstacles you'll never destroy in your way (and some truly awful ones). And like. The fact that Henry gets a happy ending. Talk about queer fucking happiness. Talk about wish fulfillment, but without sparing my feelings first. The movie made me feel the very Real fear and threat first. The reality that people like Henry leave all the time and sometimes nothing can last forever without being a danger to the person involved, the reality that their conversation in Henry's room was so fucking high intensity to My fucking heart. And I've stood there. I've been them. The election too, I figured a movie would fear being political (you know lol despite being queer). But movies nowadays, they do fear. They fear saying they care about it, when for fucks sake there's places we can visit and not have the right to exist so fuck That. And it's a fictional election. But my hearts in my throat and I bet Alex's is too. Alex is safe if his mom loses, he's a rich politicians kid. But I've Sat on election night and lived through trump winning. And knowing that meant women losing their rights and safety, queer people losing their rights and safety, knowing every Single election people sit there and wonder if anything will be okay tomorrow. For ordinary people. For people like Alex if his mom never became a politician. For his mom, his dad, his abuela. And in a way sure the movies heavy handed. Frankly I'm gonna forgive it, I could give a fuck about heavy handed. I liked the Barbie movie, but that movie sure was gentle for being called "very feminist." Women are getting arrested for abortions. It's not very on the nose or heavy handed when that's not even really a major issue (not that it needs to be, a movie about a doll wasn't ever expected to be heavily handed political). But this movie? The presidents a main character. To avoid politics would be Expected of a romcom, but shitty. So yeah why not lean in and be heavy handed. They don't have to say it, because this movie is an optimistic future where people like Alex are fine. But there's a weight to what if his mom loses, what if Alex can't hold hands next time he goes to a certain state. But I hope the people who watch this movie, one day, don't even feel those stakes. Because they don't have to. Because the world's like it was for Henry, kind and accepting. Because more of the world is that way then not.
And I'm glad it ended happy, but real if that makes sense. It's an optimism I can carve out eventually, you can. Eventually. If we keep trying.
If anyone saw Fire Island, another great queer movie, that one also didn't shy away from political. It's a romance too, and it was frank about queer communities and people and us with each other versus how the wider world is in relation to us. I appreciated with Red White and Royal Blue another movie that felt like that. That felt a bit closer to honest, rather than sugar coating both our identities and our experiences in the world to make it easier to palette. There's a time and place for sugar coating it (teen movies that aim for kind to us like Love Simon are a good place) but there's also a time when I don't want anyone straight coddled. I want them to see us make love and KNOW it's love. I want them to see us for who WE are, even the degree that we are different and that the world Does make us endure hoops and pains it never forces on straight people, and make them Care about us and learn to relate to us if they want to enjoy our romance. They wanna care about us falling in love? They can care about what we have to go through and be brave about and empathize with people who don't always flirt like they do or follow the same path. I'm fucking over the Moon that this movie asks its audience to view life and love and the whole world from the perspective of an optimistic political bisexual young man. Even if you're nothing like him, try to connect. And likewise, Alex is being asked to try to understand a man who has his own very Different experiences to Alex. Henry again, asks the audience a second time to relate to a man both they and Alex cannot relate their own life experiences to. Even further, if Alex is assumed straight when you go in and you learn to accept hes bi, then Henry makes the audience also reach to accept Henry is gay. Idk if straight people consider that another hurdle lol as they both seem hurdles to straight people I've seen. But also Henry is old money, royalty even, and fuck I know absolutely no one who can personally connect to that or even knows someone in their social circle who's fucking royalty. But Alex is asked to connect and relate, and so are we, and hopefully we grow and expand a bit as we do. And maybe that's part of what we're supposed to leave this story with. That the world is wide and beautiful and full of so many experiences and there's value in them and in trying to understand their values and pain and hoping for all of us to have a kinder world we're allowed to exist within. I don't know. I'm too tired to know all this movies got to offer.
But as I said. Red White and Royal Blue is fucking phenomenal.

Today my son told me he has a crush on one of his friends. This friend is a boy. My son had been holding this close to his chest for months and it has been WEIGHING on him.
We were rewatching Brooklyn 99 and had just finished the episode where Rosa comes out as bisexual. I look over and this kid is curled up in his blanket crying. We're a feelings family but that's a weird one, so I had him come over and sit with me while we figured out what was wrong. Long story short, he was sad because he's been worried that I would react the way Rosa's parents reacted (spoilers- badly).
I'm openly queer. All but 3 of my close friends are openly queer. This kid is surrounded by joyous queerness on a daily basis. And he was still scared to tell me he likes a boy. He knew in his head I would be happy and supportive, but he picks up and internalizes so much of that societal homophobia that he was worried his queer mother would be upset he likes a boy.
I'm a big flurry of emotions right now. I'm so proud of my brave kid for speaking his truth. I'm sad he already has internalized stuff to work out of his system. I've made him brownies to have for breakfast tomorrow. I'm trying not to mock his appalling gaydar bc he's lamenting the fact that the friend he has a crush on is straight (aw yiss rite of passage), and meanwhile he has hung out with that boy in our local queer community space during queer youth events. My guy. I don't want to jump to conclusions but maybe we could at minimum not assume the kid is straight. And I'm on a quotes dork high bc I got to immediately use the best line ever uttered by Captain Raymond Holt- “Every time someone steps up and says who they are, the world becomes a better, more interesting place” and we'd JUST HEARD IT.

vi. biography
Joseph Conway was born William Joseph Barlowe, to a single mother, Frances Conway. He was given his father's name, as that was the expected thing to do, but that man left the hospital after Joe was born, intending to never come back to them. Frances was only 19, shunned by her parents, but determined to make it work for her and her new baby. Joe grew up in poverty, in a rough neighbourhood in Seattle. His mother worked two jobs, and she stayed away from men - although part of her longed for the support and companionship of a partner and a father figure for her son, she knew her taste in men had gotten her into more trouble than it was now worth. She eventually met and married a man when Joe was in college, and they remained married to this day.
Joe was an introverted, creative and well-read child. He followed his mother's advice to do well in school because he loved her dearly and wanted to make her proud, and he excelled in reading, writing and literature. In high school, he joined the school newspaper as a journalist writer and regularly entered creative writing competitions he found in magazines, which won him some minor recognition. However, due to their poverty, Joe also had to work as soon as possible. When he was young, he would go around his rough neighbourhood and travel to the nicer neighbourhoods to deliver newspapers, mow lawns, wash cars and windows, clean out gutters. He became handy around the house by learning DIY, and fixing things in the absence of a 'man of the house'.
His hard work eventually paid off, and he was accepted to Yale with a partial scholarship. He majored in English Literature with a Writing Concentration, and the time he wasn't studying, he was working to cover that which his scholarship couldn't - delivering pizza, waiting tables, bartending - which earned him the scorn of some of his peers and the admiration of others. As soon as he was able, he became a student teaching assistant, finally able to quit his service industry jobs. With a slightly more open schedule, he finally had time to date seriously, and it was there he met his first wife. They dated through college - through their Bachelors degree, and Joe went on to study for a Masters degree, during which he began to write his first novel. After receiving encouragement from his professor and mentor, he sent it out to several publishing companies before graduation. To his surprise, it was picked up, and he was offered a three-book deal. This was the beginning of his career as a novelist, under the name Joseph Conway. He legally changed his name to take his mother's surname, honouring her hard work, sacrifice and love.
Joe would go on to write an internationally popular high fantasy trilogy, as well as marry his first wife. After his third book was published, his literary agent pushed for him to get a second three-book deal, this time for a science fiction trilogy, which was accepted. Joe's life changed drastically - he now had more money than he had ever imagined having, with a job that had long been a dream. Although he and his wife were young, they were happy but decided to wait until their late twenties to begin having a family. After his science fiction trilogy proved to be another international success, Joe was pushed to keep writing, but he wanted something different - to return to academia to pursue a PhD. He could afford to do it, and his wife fully supported him, thinking he would return to Yale, or perhaps branch out to a different Ivy League. It was a shock when he revealed he wanted to study at Trinity College Dublin, in Ireland.
Initially, their relationship remained strong. They loved each other fiercely, but after the first year of long distance, they became strained. Joe convinced her to move to Ireland to live with him, which required a long-stay visa. It was a successful process but after two more years, the strain began again in earnest. His wife wanted to start a family and wasn't entirely happy in Ireland. Joe wanted to wait until his PhD programme was finished before having children, and he loved his life in Ireland. Eventually, their fights became too numerous, and Joe was too busy and too focused to see what was happening. His wife returned to America and filed for divorce. Devasted, Joe channelled his heartbreak into his work, writing an entirely different kind of novel from anything he'd done before - a heartbreaking, painful, drama, accompanied by a small book of poetry. This novel would go on to be published and receive not only international success but critical acclaim and various literary awards.
Once his PhD was finished, Joe returned to America. He moved to New York City, but would regularly return to Ireland.
Joe would go on to write another high fantasy trilogy, returning to the original world he created to write a new story, much to the delight of his fans. During this time, he met his second wife, who was so unlike his first it took his breath away. Instead of the slow, steady burn of his college youth, this partnership was passionate and moved fast. Joe proposed a little over a year after they met, and they were married a year after that. Now, it was Joe who was ready and eager for children, but his second wife wanted to enjoy the lifestyle his success and her career brought them. Joe complied, focusing on his work, and enjoying his time with her. However, he grew restless and began speaking in earnest about them having a child once his trilogy was finished.
His dreams seemed to come true when his wife told him she was pregnant, only for it to turn into a nightmare in her third trimester. Almost entirely by accident, Joe discovered a secret phone, which led him down a trail to discover his wife's affair with his manager, a man he considered one of his closest friends. Shellshocked, Joe shut down, his whole life crumbling around him. He asked for a paternity test once the baby was once, and when it came back, the child he'd been preparing for wasn't his. He filed for divorce the next day and did whatever he could to never pay her alimony, and never see her again. He gave her almost all of their property and material goods, save for a rustic seaside cabin in Starlight Oaks - a pet project he'd been intending to convert into a holiday home for their new family. He broke ties with his manager and former best friend, telling his publishing company he wasn't sure when or if he would be able to continue his work with them.
After that, he packed the rest of his belongings into a small moving truck and his car, and he drove the length of the US to his new life - an abandoned seaside cabin desperately in need of renovation.

Lorth Needa Headcanons
So, I had some people ask about Captain Needa headcanons online so I decided to make a post. I have different headcanons for crack vs. serious verses, so I've divided them up here.
Tumblr media
General Headcanons:
Given that he joined the navy under the Galactic Republic and served as a lieutenant in the Clone Wars, he's several years older than Piett. Nonetheless, the two are very close. Most of the time they don't notice the age difference but Piett will joke about Needa being old sometimes.
He was born and raised in Coruscant but likes to travel. He's not prejudiced but there's still a lot he doesn't know about the Outer Rim.
He is bisexual and dated both men and women prior to meeting his wife during the Galactic Republic era.
His wife is a biologist who continued her work into the Imperial era. Her research is highly classified and Lorth knows next to nothing about it.
He has three kids by the time of the original trilogy, two daughters and a son. His eldest daughter was born shortly before the start of the Clone Wars, resulting in Needa missing a large chunk of her early childhood. This is part of why he arranged to have his family live "on base" in one of the Star Destroyers after the Empire was formed. His younger daughter and son were born in the early years of the Empire. He's a good father to all of them but closest to the second daughter.
Very loyal to the Galactic Republic and then to the Galactic Empire. Needa views the Empire as a continuation of the Republic with some much-needed improvements. He's a nice guy, but definitely not about to defect to the Rebellion anytime soon. Similarly to Piett, he groups the Rebellion together with Separatists and criminal gangs and truly believes that the Empire is a peacekeeping organization.
Mild-mannered guy but loves thrill rides and high-intensity sports in his free time. This is shocking to all his fellow Imperials.
Crack-Verse Headcanons:
Needa founded the Imperial Adopt a Tauntaun Refuge Fund with the Emperor's blessing because tauntauns are Emperor Palpatine's favorite animal. Since its foundation, the charity has rescued thousands of tauntauns from unethical Rebel handlers. Needa has fostered many orphan taunlets whom he treats like his children. They have all imprinted on him Jurassic World-style and will flock to him if he visits the refuge.
He finds baking therapeutic and due to the large amount of stress he has to put up with, he's gotten very good at it.
He brings food to a lot of the meetings but doesn't take credit for it. So, everyone just assumed the food was catered by whatever COMPNOR initiative organized the meeting. After Needa's death, the food stops and everyone's grumpy about it.
He invites Jerjerrod and Piett over frequently for brunch/gossip, emphasis on the gossip.
Needa realized Piett was attracted to Veers very early on and has been shipping them for years. He's also been there for a lot of Piett's "he could never love me" episodes. He's given emotional support for his kids through their teens but this is far worse.
Mediocre with a blaster but extremely good at laser tag.
Needa keeps acting as the third wheel for couples but doesn't realize it. Veers and Piett are too nice to say anything and the hints keep going over Needa's head.
At one point, Needa was stuck in an elevator with Motti and Jerjerrod. He was deeply upset by the amount of PDA that happened in those five minutes and ranted to Piett about it afterwards. ("How could they let my taunlet see such things?!")
Has legitimately tried to befriend Lord Vader to no avail.
In an Empire Wins crackverse that I have, Needa finds the falcon after running an update to essentially get a better rearview camera on the ISD Avenger. He is subsequently promoted to Grand Admiral and forever alters galactic history. He is subsequently Piett's Best Man for Piett and Veers's wedding.
Needa can dance. Very well. Too well. This is very disturbing for Piett.
Needa is the long-suffering mom friend of the imp crew. One day, he is going to snap.
Serious Verse Headcanons:
His first daughter went into scientific research. The second has only ever wanted to join the navy like her dad. It's cute early on when she's going around on Empire Day wearing his old officer's cap, but as she gets older, Lorth doesn't know how to break it to her that the Imperial Navy is accepting fewer and fewer women with each cycle. Lorth isn't sexist himself, but he's realistic and doesn't really see the world changing for the better by the time his daughter comes of age. He's also worried about the rate of assault in coed ISDs.
Needa has been close friends with Piett since the first year of the Empire. He got to know Piett through the latter's husband and attended their wedding. This makes Needa's death especially difficult for Piett in ESB. Piett suspects that Vader was aware of this fact and purposely killed Needa in front of him, knowing it would be an especially potent warning to Piett.
Needa spoke briefly with Piett minutes before his death, during which Piett attempted to dissuade him from confronting Vader. Needa argued that if he did not report to Vader himself, the Sith Lord would seek to punish the entire crew of the ISD Avenger. Consequently, it was better to sacrifice one man. He asks Piett to watch out for his family after his death. Had he known that Vader would execute not only him but his family soon afterwards, Needa likely would have acted differently.
The only members of Needa's family who escape Vader's wrath are his cousin, Virar, and his second daughter, who was away at the academy at the time of her father's death. Lorth's wife, eldest daughter and son were on board the ISD Avenger during the pursuit of the Millennium Falcon and were all executed soon after Lorth's death.
