Yeah so let's talk about Kaiser's self harm here.
Tumblr media
I read this chapter and was thinking about this last scene in particular just because it's very unnerving to think about Kaiser literally trying to deprive himself of air to "think" of a plan to beat Isagi. And since this is also the chapter where we are finally given the backstory behind his motivations, and where the Blue Rose tattoo came from, it puts into perspective just why it's on his neck instead of in a different place.
If the blue rose is supposed to be a reminder of how the impossible can be made possible to Kaiser, than I also think it's a representation of the actual pressure he puts on himself to do just that. He's literally choking himself out here to think, and deliberately putting the force over that tattoo because that's the center of his ideals, the reason he's even trying to do the things he's doing.
Tumblr media
I also find it very ironic that Kaiser says he wants to be someone who can't be defined, the impossible. Because the crux of his issue is that he can't define Isagi.
He and Isagi are just so alike that even trying to understand him on a basic level when playing together is hard for Kaiser, and not because Isagi is some complex person but because he doesn't see that Isagi is a direct parallel to himself, a mirror in a way. Another observation I made is that in this panel and a lot of other panels where Kaiser is off the field, we can see that he has his hair tied back.
Tumblr media
Kaiser keeps his hair in a specific way not just because he likes the style, but to show off that tattoo on his neck. So that it can always be a present reminder of what he's striving for. But you can tell in this panel that it's WAY shorter than it is now, and that it's grown out for a while now. At this point of the story, Kaiser probably had a healthy relationship with his own motivations and just looking at the rose was enough to satiate his ego and keep him going.
Tumblr media
But as time went on, and he wasn't close enough to achieving the goals he set out the longer it grew (until it is what it is now) Kaiser's self harm (because that is what he's doing here in that panel) is in an effort to make him "play better". Not everyone self harms to "punish" themselves, it is pretty common for people to do it because they think it'll help them in their goals somehow, a way to think "clearer" like Kaiser is doing.
But it's not at all a healthy coping mechanism. A lot of the Blue Lock characters have their own little "training strategies" that they do after a game when they want to get better, or to simply just think. Isagi seeks out the advice of other people, Kunigami hits the gym, Chigiri likes to do his hair, Bachira likes dribbling, Nagi likes to play games etc.
And Kaiser's way of doing that is...well this. It makes you wonder if he's ever done this before, or if this is a first for him because even Ness seemed incredibly disturbed to find him trying to choke himself out.

You know what? Maybe it's a controversial opinion but it makes sense why, no matter what Jason does or how he changes or how long ago it was, Bruce will always hold how he has killed people in the past over his head.
We're talking about a man who puts on a cape and cowl every night because of the memory of helplessness he has from being a kid who watched his parents be mugged then murdered in front of him. A man who has control issues. A deeply troubled man who has contingency plans for even his children.
There is nothing Jason can do if Bruce isn't willing to work with him. Not as Batman and Red Hood, but as Bruce and Jason.
The ball is in Bruce's court.
He needs to start putting in the work to forgive Jason, forgive himself for the perception that he failed Jason by 'letting' him become a killer, and change how he sees Jason. Because while he sees his son, Jason? I'm betting he also sees a Joe Chill-esque 'monster' he had a hand in releasing on the world. Doesn't matter that Jason has a no-kill policy now. This is Bruce's problem he needs to fix.
And how does he do that?
Therapy.

hey, fun thought! crowley gets caught up being accused of a witch during one of the witch crazes whilst definitely not helping out accused or ill children / people (presenting as female or not it doesn't matter, those mfs accused anyone regardless of age or gender sometimes- but always outcasts, sort of disliked and/ or vulnerable people in society)
like in my head it's very likely for that to have happened because, yknow, sauntering vaguely downwards and all BUT like think about it - they're extremely clever, kind but always deny it, would probably be vague with answers, or very short tempered (justifiably) with the humans 'investigating', baby girl has to keep her eyes hidden which won't help her case. they would in most likelyhood be a prime target for being accused especially if they're new to the community they're at, and if they are known/seen in the community pretty much at all.
further on that fun thought, it could've happened to aziraphale as well. in my brain he probably managed to get out of the situation faster than crowley (idk why maybe angel stuff, or because crowley swoops in to get him out)
but just like... AAA. so many events in history that these ineffable idiots would've had to live through and watch, and aziraphale wouldn't be able to interfere with some because it's "god's will", and crowley has to avoid being seen as good in any way especially getting back to hell. and it's not like they can tell the future or it's like dr who or anything, they're living and adapting with the times as they come , these events are happening to them in real time and in all likelihood because of assignments they'd have to be in the local vicinity and probably witnessed a lot of them. they can't be avoided.

Tall-ass tower manifests in city without any logical explanation
Interior has nonsensical geometry and architecture. Building shifts constantly. Seemingly alive.
Shady organisations have tried to manipulate the structure to their own ends.
Linked to an extra-dimensional godlike entity that wants to use the tower to bring about their own goals (Nix and The Board respectively)
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Protagonists unlock their powers by pointing a "gun" that isn't actually a gun at their own heads and pulling the trigger (the Service Weapon is obviously very different to an Evoker but the symbolism is there I think)
Both do this without being certain they'll survive.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Protagonists have manifestations of their inner selves and their willpower living in their heads. These manifestations are sentient beings that serve as both an extension of the protagonist and a separate character.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Both of their inner selves also serve as extensions of a separate entity (Thanatos (the Persona) is a remnant/extension or something of Ryoji. Polaris is an offshoot/remnant of Hedron)
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Protagonists are guided and assisted by otherworldly beings who take the forms of older men in service roles (Ahti, who presents himself as the janitor of the Oldest House, and Igor, who acts as the host of the Velvet Room)
Ahti and Igor both appear to exist in a way distinct from humans and can perceive other planes of existence easily.
Ahti and Igor both speak in manners that the protagonists find confusing and aloof but ultimately are trustworthy and good-natured beings.
I've run out of picture slots, tragically, but do you see the vision?
I think a very fun crossover fic or something could very easily be made here.
Additional things for the Oldest House and Tartarus:
Filled with monsters that feed on human consciousness and leave people as husks of their true selves (Shadows and the Hiss)
Filled with fun little lore documents left behind by researchers.
Directly connected to planes that exist between dream and reality (the Velvet Room and the Astral Plane)
Heavily based on mythology (Tartarus is obviously named after, y'know, Tartarus. The Oldest House is heavily implied to either be Yggdrasil or at the very least be an ancient tree that potentially somehow inspired the myth of Yggdrasil/took its form from said myth).
You Are Going To Get Lost In These Funky-Ass Towers.

so i think most of us are aware of the whole “steve’s dad is an asshole” thing and how a lot of the time in like fanfics it talks abt how steve never cries because “real, manly men don’t cry” and thats what his father has always drilled into him.

steve *sees a stray cat on a walk*: oh god, eddie look *starts tearing up* that poor thing eds we have to take it to a vet or something look how skinny it is
eddie: steve it could have like a disease or something we can’t touch it, the most we can do is call animal control or the shelter or something maybe they can help

Finwe, Ingwe, Olwe, and Elwe (The -We’s) are all emotionally stunted and have untreated PTSD.
Seriously though, most of their subjects don’t realize it because they were born in valinor/the girdle, while the -we’s were born before the valar discovered the elves.
Let me tell you what indicates that the -we’s are emotionally stunted.
In the girdle/valinor, the elves were safe for the first time in existence. And this safety allowed them to focus on fostering positive and emotionally healthy relationships with one another because they no longer needed to fear death around every corner. For once, whole families could grow together with no chance of a member being killed due to the darkness. The elves even had time to foster skills and explore at their leisure, instead of being solely focused on “survive, survive, survive”.
All in all, this means that those who were born/grew up in valinor/the girdle were the first elves with the chance to grow up emotionally healthy, with proper communication and relationship skills. Because they actually have the time and energy needed to learn these skills.
The -we’s (finwe, ingwe, olwe, and elwe) however, were born and grew up during a time where they were in constant survive mode, fight or flight. Their priority was living to see another day, and they likely were surrounded by constant death/disappearances of their family members/people they cared about. AND while the elves may have spawned in cuvinan fully grown, they still have absolutely no life experience then, nor did they magically know how society and their fellow elves worked.
They essentially had the cognative function of an adult, yet were as dumb as babies, because they didn’t just immediatly know everything. They had to figure everything out. Like cave men, kinda. So yeah, these first elves are absolutely useless when it comes to being emotionally healthy and well developed. It wasn’t until they were safe (in the girdle/valinor) that they really started to develop society as a whole, with kings and queens and governments, etc. Before that, they had a loose-ish leadership going on. Heck, the -we’s only really became the leader bc they were the first to follow the valar.
Now, you’re probably wondering “well what about the other elves that went on the great journey? Are they emotionally stunted to?” Probably to some extent, but the -we’s are by far the worst. And the reason is because they are the kings (I guess Miriel probably also falls in this category).
No one’s going to go up to the leader of a nation and say “hey, you need therapy”. That and the pressure of being perfect leaders means that they never got the chance to really become emotionally healthy and be able to form healthy relationships with their family, because they couldn’t admit that they weren’t perfectly mentally healthy in the first place.
Now, why is it important that finwe, ingwe, olwe, and elwe are emotionally stunted? What affect does it have on the story/silmarillion? Well-
*points at Miriel breaking down and fading*
*points at finwe’s crap handling of his family*
*points at elwe’s crap handling of his family/people* *in all honesty, his refusal to make peace with the noldor might be a result of his pre-valar’s arrival all-or-nothing survival drive* (don’t get me wrong, I still think he was dumb for some acts, but somethings I understand)
*idk a lot about olwe or ingwe, but olwe’s fear of returning to the pre-great journey days would explain his refusal to allow feanor the boats*
So I guess what I’m saying is that finwe, ingwe, olwe, and elwe (and Miriel) are emotionally stunted and have untreated ptsd from the days before the valar arrived, and no one’s forcing them to go to therapy bc 1. They’re kings and 2. Most elves (especially those born in valinor/the girdle) probably don’t even realize they have it, and it resulted in a lot of problems.
Side note: this either means that the silvans/avari/cirdan’s people are either the most emotionally healthy as a whole OR the most emotionally stunted. For the sake of my feral silvan au, I’m going with stunted, yet acutely aware of other elves’ emotional needs.

i love gwynriel and your answers are really convincing. but I'm confused why the hell Sarah put Azriel having some kind of involvement with Elain if gwyn and Az ended up together in the end. because we can't deny that there's something between Elain and Az, there's interest on both sides, even though it might not be simple, there's something lol. but I still don't know who Az will stay with? I don't have an opinion on that. sometimes I think Az and gwyn are endgame, other times I think they didn't get together and there might be someone else for him and someone else for gwyn, obviously. i find azriel so confusing, sarah doesn't give a lot of hints about him, it pisses me off because i love him so much. Also, I'm so sad that there is so much hate on gwyn and Elain because of the ships, if Sarah didn't put azriel with either of them, it would be a war 😂 Sarah is sharing opinions I'm scared of what she's going to do lol
This got a little long, sorry I just digressed 😅
Honestly, I was an e/riel until I read ACOSF (so I guess a total of like a week?) I thought that the whole breaking the bond to be with someone you loved thing was romantic. I thought their aestetic was cute, if not overplayed a hit. But honestly, SJM gives us a lot of clues in ACOSF to show Elain will not stay in the NC and ultimately won’t be with Az. I truly believe that ACOSF put the nail in the coffin for e/riel as endgame. However, it is important for both Az and Elain individually.
1) Az does NOT respect Elain or view her as an equal. She wanted to help with the dread trove and the moment she left the room he went against her decision. She wants to do more with her life, but the entire IC EXCEPT FOR HER MATE underestimates her.
2) Az confesses he has never thought of Elain past sexual fantasies. “He hadn’t gotten that far with his planning, certainly not beyond the fantasies he pleasured himself to.” This is again him just seeing her as a sexual object and not as an equal.
3) throughout the bonus chapter, Azriel is CONSTANTLY saying how wrong his feelings for Elain are. The shadows tell him to go to bed because they knew Elain was waiting up for him. I’m sorry, but THAT IS NOT HEALTHY. Forbidden love is the WRONG trope for Azriel. There is a great post by @lunainfortuna linked here that goes into it with my commenting there. There is another great post by @acourtofthought that talks about the negative emotions in the BC here
4) Azriel would stifle Elain's growth in the guise of protection (as we have seen in ACOSF by not respecting her choice behind her back) and Elain will appease Azriel (as she does with her sisters) to keep the peace and allow him to do what Nesta did especially if she notes he gets upset whenever she wants to help even if it puts her at risk (call back to how he was overprotective with Mor to the point she feels guilty about making a decision on her own knowing it will upset him). That's not a couple that would compliment each other's growth or challenge each other. Neither will pull the other out of their shell and this is something I think both Azriel and Elain need because everyone around them is happy to let them be in their own head for too long.
5) Aesthetics and being nice to each other does not warrant a long-term stable and equal relationship when we actually look at them as characters and their personality and actions. Azriel, like Nesta, speaks for Elain even if he thought he was thinking in her best interests but those "best interests" are clouded by his desperation for a mate and his jealousy of Lucien and Rhys and Cassian. They weren't Elain's own words and she does have a voice to speak out on it instead of Azriel.
6) I still think ACOSF and the bonus chapter are big indicators that they don't work out as a couple. Sarah could've made them more appealing to the readers but she didn't. This was Nesta’s book, and she could have made Elain a larger part of Nesta’s recovery journey and had her spend more time with azriel. But she didn’t. You know who had the most page time in ACOSF? Nesta, cassian, gwyn, and azriel.
7) rhys is almost always right. The podcast BookTalkforBookTok consistently jokes that he is always telling the future. When he steers Azriel off of Elain before things escalate, he is truly looking out for Az’s best interest. Rhys has great intentions and poor execution. However, whenever rhys says something it’s true. If rhys thought they would be good for each other, then he wouldn’t interfere and would work something out with lucien.
8) cassian saying that Elain looks dreary in black is just SO ON THE NOSE and idk if SJM can make it any clearer. Black is the night court color, black is azriel’s color. @yazthebookish confronts this here and I couldn’t have said it better myself.
9) time and time again, SJM is asked about what the couples would do and EVERYTIME she talks about what Elain and lucien would do together. In her head, they are end game. When asked where they would go on vacation together, she said Paris. Then there was this beauty:
Tumblr media
10) Az is still not over mor by solstice and he has a LOT of work to do before being in a relationship. He is using Elain as a distraction against his bigger issues with intimacy and belonging.
Ultimately, I have a theory that Elain tried to steer herself towards azriel and away from lucien for all the wrong reasons. Azriel, despite the wings, looks more or less human. He has rounded ears, is soft spoken, and she associates him with her human life. She meets lucien on the worst night of her life (mirroring how gwyn met Az on her worst night too just fyi), he has long hair, fae ears, a mechanical eye, and looks the part of the fae she grew up hating. HOWEVER, if she got to know the males the opposite is actually true. Despite his looks, azriel is incredibly male and fae. He follows his instincts, he growls/snarls, he is a fighter and a torturer. Lucien, on the other hand, has a very human soul. He currently even lives with Jurian and Vassa. She clings to Az because accepting lucien means accepting being fae and I think she is still in denial. I wouldn’t doubt there would be a point at the beginning of her book where she might want to jump at the opportunity to become human again. She lost the most out of the three sisters by becoming fae and she loves life. Accepting the bond means accepting being fae and this emotional and sexually charged relationship with Az is the bandaid on her gaping wound. It will only keep the bleeding at bay for so long.
Both azriel and Elain are using each other as distractions from their true trauma’s. Azriel latches onto women who are unable to give him the love he deserves. Elain is trying to keep the one human part of her she has left, the ability to choose her partner and not have it chosen for her by the cauldron.
TOG Spoiler:
After finishing TOG, I feel like chaol and azriel will be on similar love stories. Chaol had loved a girl prior to the events of throne of glass but found her in bed with Rolland, and I think this parallels to Az’s relationship to Mor. Then his next relationship was with Aelin. It was hinted at through all of TOG and before they got together in COM. Their relationship was short and brief and ended badly (I think they were officially together for like a week before shit hit the fan). This parallel’s Az and Elain. Both couples look good on paper, but lack the special spark that makes SJM couples endgame. They end up being worse for each other because of their personalities and they give into their insecurities with each other. This leads me to think that Azriel will go on a journey of introspection and emotional healing with the help of gwyn, just like chaol did with yrene. Just like yrene, gwyn has the power to heal with her invoking stones. I can go on but you get the point. When they all meet again in KOA, they are all happy for each other despite their rocky past just like I think the whole Elain/lucien/Az/gwyn group will be.
Ultimately SJM is gonna do what she is gonna do. But I for one will be incredibly disappointed if Elain and Az are endgame because I think they both deserve better. They are both good characters, but toxic together.
