The Big Guide to Humans: Skin

First: Yes, it is true that humans have whole-body stripes that not all species can see. Yes, it is also true that they themselves cannot usually see them. They are an artifact of pre-natal development and are present from birth. They usually have no significance, though some skin abnormalities may follow their usually-invisible path (or may make them visible).

Their hair texture is coily, curly, or wavy. They are most likely light skinned or mixed race (I'm seeing mostly black, white, or middle eastern. This message could only be for a few but I heard someone's fp/fs could be Somalian, Moroccan, or Israeli to be specific). They have hazel eyes (eye color is a mix of green, aqua, gold, or amber). They have freckles and moles. Skintone is warm and medium or medium deep (tawny, olive, or brown). Your fp/fs's body could be more bottom heavy. If they are more feminine I'm seeing a pear shaped figure and if they are more masculine I'm seeing that they have strong legs. ☝️This character study focuses primarily on TV series Joel, but draws on some comparisons from the game version of Joel.

*I made a previous error with regards to Outbreak Day in the game & Joel's age - so this version is now correct.

Appears in: The Last Of Us, 2023 (first appearance on screen in episode 1, season 1, seen at approx. 04:56)

Age (if known): Joel is seen in the TV series at both the ages of 36 (Outbreak Day happens on his 36th birthday) and we catch up with him 20 years after Outbreak Day at the age of 56, where he's based in the Boston QZ

Sexuality: Straight - Joel has a 14 year-old daughter, Sarah, from a previous relationship with her mother, however it's not confirmed if he was married to her mother or not in the TV show. It's implied that Joel is in some kind of relationship with Tess Servopoulos, although never actually confirmed.

Nationality: American. Joel is from Texas originally

Family: 1 daughter, Sarah. 1 younger brother, Tommy. No other family mentioned.

Joel is killed by Abby after she beats him to death with a golf club. As of creating this character analysis, it is yet to be determined if Joel will be killed off in Season 2 of the TV series.

This scar is later seen briefly in the scene where Ellie stitches him up after he is stabbed by David's men, from which he is also left with a scar.

Other Markings: Joel has a scratch/gash on the right side of his face in episode two, and throughout the series he sustains several other minor injuries resulting in temporary abrasions, cuts, bruises etc... Also has a gash on the left side of his neck in episode 8/9.

Injuries: Several. Joel hairline fractures his right hand after punching out the FEDRA guard - he punches him 15 times in the face/skull. Joel is pistol-whipped with a rifle in the back of his head in episode 9, knocking him out and suffering a concussion. Joel is scarred from a failed suicide attempt on his temple, has scars on his stomach/abdomen from being shot at and stabbed. Joel suffers several cuts/abrasions and bruises from general surviving and fighting. Joel also appears to have bad knees when he's older, and walks with a limped gait.

Joel speaks with a prominent Texan accent. In the show it appears he's living in or just outside of Travis County, Austin, Texas.

In the game, Joel was born on 26th September, 1981 in Arlington, Texas. In the TV series however, Joel would have been born on 26th September, 1967.

The majority of the game play is set 20 years after the opening scene. Which means Joel is 32 when Sarah is alive. Sarah is 12 in the game before she dies, so that means Joel was a father at age 20 in the game. In the TV series however, Sarah is 14 at the time of her death and Joel is 36, meaning he would have had her at the age of 21/22. In the game, Joel was born in 1981 and Outbreak Day happens in 2013, meaning Joel is 32 in the game, and not 36 like in the show, on Outbreak Day. As Joel is 36 in 2003 in the TV show on Outbreak Day, it means he would have been born in 1967, counting backwards from 2003 by 36 years.

The time on Joel's watch in the TV series when it stops, after the bullet ricochets off his watch and hits Sarah, reads on or around 02:40AM. (Sarah woke up at 11:03pm, and between that and the time of her death a few hours would have passed with them trying to escape etc...)

It is implied that Joel and Tess are in a relationship to some extent in the TV series, although it's never actually confirmed romantically between them. Joel explains to Ellie they met when they were in a group together, and are smugglers when we meet them in the show. They are seen living together in an apartment in the Boston QZ and sharing the same bed. Tess also states that she never asked Joel to feel the same way she did, before she dies, implying some possible unrequited love there.

Joel is a self-employed contractor in the construction trade before Outbreak Day. He and his brother Tommy appear to work together and drive to the site together in Tommy's truck.

In the game, Joel is murdered by Abby in revenge for killing her father, who turned out to be the surgeon who was going to operate on Ellie to find a cure. She brutally beats him to death with a golf club. It is yet to be determined whether the TV series will follow this same story arc for Joel and kill his character off, or if they will re-work another story arc for him. For now, it is widely assumed/speculated Joel will die at some point in the TV series too.

In the TV series, Joel is hard of hearing in his right ear, however in the game, Joel's hearing is completely fine. Joel attributes his hearing loss to gunshots, but later explains to Ellie he tried to take his life after Sarah died, so it's also presumed that doing that possibly affected his hearing.

It's not confirmed if Sarah's mother and Joel were married in the TV series, or why she left, and nor do we learn the name of Sarah's mother. In the game however, Joel mentions he was briefly married to Sarah's mother.

In the TV series, Joel is much more of a softer character than in the game. Craig Mazin stated that they wanted Joel to appear more "frail" which would coincide with a real life 56 year-old who "can't crouch for more than three minutes otherwise their back would give out." In the TV series Joel is seen to suffer with panic attacks indicating he feels much more emotion than the game version of Joel, who is more hardened.

Joel reveals to Ellie he would have liked to have been a singer and can play the guitar. Although in season 1 we don't hear or see Joel singing or playing guitar. Joel has an acoustic guitar poster on his wall in his bedroom on the TV series.

Outfit 1 - (Opening scene) Black round neck t-shirt, denim jeans

Outfits - (Remainder of series) - Joel's overall look consists mostly of plaid shirts and denim looking shirts, worn-in denim jeans and boots, that are all in various stages of wear and tear. He is seen duct taping his boots together. He sports various jackets and coats throughout the seasons, weather dependent.

Joel's green plaid shirt is actually Frank's/worn by Frank before Joel even meets Bill and Frank when he's younger with Tess. Later after their deaths, Joel showers and dresses in a clean shirt, which is the green plaid shirt that Joel is synonymous for wearing. He is dressed very similarly to Frank, even wearing similar jeans, boots, just like Frank did.

Joel has a red backpack when he is younger with Tess. Then later, he has a brown one which he then leaves behind during the attack in Kansas City. When Henry dies, Joel takes Henry's backpack as his own which is a lighter sandy brown colour.

Joel's primary weapon is a pistol. A Taurus Model 66 with blue finished 4-inch barrel and rubber grip. This is the same pistol that Joel uses in the game too. He keeps it hidden under the floorboards of his apartment in the Boston QZ until needed.

Joel uses a variety of guns in the TV series, mostly those that he finds or takes from others, including a Beretta M92FS, Colt M4A1 Carbine rifle, Remington 700 BDL rifle and a Rugler mini-14.

Joel also uses switchblades and knives too.

Joel uses a piece of metal piping to bash in the head one of David's men when looking for Ellie.

In the TV series, we don't actually see Joel drive, or potentially own, a vehicle of his own. He rides in Tommy's pickup truck, which is a 2001 Chevrolet Silverado 1500HD Crew Cab. He is seen as a passenger in it when leaving for work in the morning, and later when he, Sarah and Tommy try to flee the city.

Joel drives various vehicles in the series, including a 2004 Dodge Durango, the car he uses to take Ellie from the hospital in episode 9. And most notably, Bill's blue and white 2001 Chevrolet S-10 for which Bill leaves the keys for Joel in episode 3.

Random ppl saying Karlach is “conventionally” attractive must live in an alternative reality I’m unaware of.

Is she stunning? Yes. But she does NOT fit into conventionally beauty standards for women (yes, even after her face change from EA).

Say you see a woman of color, way WAY taller than the average - let’s say 1.90m tall. She is visibly bulkier, has thick thighs, prominent abs. Wider shoulders than average.

Then, her skin (which again, isn’t white), is covered in marks. Scars, tattoos, discolorations and other “uneven” tones and textures.

On top of that, her entire right side is covered in ‘hideous’ burnt skin tissue. From her fingers to her ribs and half her chest.

But not all. She has metal pins and bits protruding from her due to some medical procedure you’re not familiar with.

And she might have facial scars too. On her very non-white facial features. Imagine she’s not only Asian - but the “wrong” kind of Asian (aka the darker side of Asia- not the mainstream-approved Japan or Korea). Maybe she’s even from the South Pacific islands.

Her hair is thicker, choppier.

And, beyond her appearance, she curses. She laughs loudly. She doesn’t act demure or quiet or feminine. She’s unapologetic about it, too. Proud of being physically stronger than most.

What an affront.

That is all to say… yes, she is stunning (to me and many of us). She’s especially more stunning BECAUSE she’s so off the scale of conventional beauty for women. You might have lived in a beautiful social bubble where women like Karlach are considered the prettiest there are, but even so, that’s not what the world at large sees as ideal beauty - for any gender, but more so for women.

That’s one of the big reasons I’m so into Karlach (and also why I have always had a soft spot for laezel too). They stick out like a sore thumb but they dgaf.

And to top it all, it’s one extra reason for me to ship the shit out of her and Astarion.

Astarion isn’t the conventional male handsomness but he does fall in a wider category of male beauty. He is the most popular male character and attracts both male and female fans.

I like him to fall for characters that would be considered way off the mainstream beauty scale. One thing I haven’t seen yet and want to do one day is make a half orc character to pair with him. Because fuck yes. And also because for me, Astarion does understand where beauty standards lay, but that lost meaning to him long ago. He’s capable of being petty and shallow but when push comes to shove, that’s not it for him.

Again, another reason as to why I’d think he’d fall head over heels for Karlach despite himself.

But yea. Going back to my point, no matter that WE think Karlach is pretty, cute, beautiful and gorgeous. That’s us being ::cough:: superior. But it doesn’t make her mainstream digestible beauty material (that’s lame shadowheart lol - sorry guys, sh is so boring to me).

Which in turn makes Karlach even more precious to me (and her and Astarion in love even more special 🖤).

Here you go, anon! These kind of turned into... some sort of mix between an imagine and headcanons at the end. Imagicanons? Sure. Well, they still classify as headcanons due to the format, but I digress. I probably would've finished this sooner, but you know... My body decided "No Write, Only Sleep" for several days in a row.

Incidentally, ya'll love Cinnabar so much that I think it's rubbing off on me LOL. I feel like I could write for her in my sleep at this point, which isn't a bad thing.

Cinnabar comforting her lover F!Chief who is insecure about her scars

Cinnabar has a lot of scars; it's a natural consequence in her line of work. She doesn't pay them any mind, so they don't really bother her.

Chief also has a multitude of scars, brands left by both Mania and close calls during combat. Many of them can be hidden by her clothes, and careful application of makeup can more or less conceal the rest, but they're nevertheless quite prominent, and their odd shapes leave no doubt of their unnatural origin. Looking at them leaves Chief sick to her stomach.

When Cinnabar first noticed Chief flinched away from being touched in certain spots, she didn't think much of it. Maybe Chief just didn't like being touched there; it was a perfectly normal boundary. Scars were far from her mind.

In fact, she discovered the scars through a complete accident. Cinnabar usually knocked before entering the Chief's room; naturally, the one time it slipped her mind was the one time she walked in on the Chief changing.

She noticed the scars, but as an afterthought. Her brain had mostly screeched to a halt, eyes going wide, heat rushing to her cheeks; Chief, for her part, was madly scrambling to cover herself with a towel.

“C-Chief, I'm so sorry, I-”

Chief interrupted Cinnabar's frantic blubbering with a raised hand. Her tone sounded resigned, and her gaze was pointedly averted. “It's fine, Cinnabar. I guess I couldn't keep it a secret forever.” She sighed again; before Cinnabar could ask what was bothering her, she continued. “So… what do you think? They're awful, aren't they?”

Cinnabar blinked a few times, trying to figure out what her girlfriend meant. Was… there something she should be noticing? (Scars were so natural to her that she didn't even think to consider them.) “I'm sorry, Chief, I don't understand…?”

“My scars.” It clicked into place, and Cinnabar's gaze returned to the patchwork of Mania marks left behind on her lover's skin. Sure, Cinnabar wasn't going to lie and say they were pretty, but they really didn't seem… Okay, they were bad. But in Cinnabar's eyes, that didn't matter at all.

However, for Chief, it clearly did matter, and quite a lot at that. The last thing Cinnabar wanted to do was dismiss her feelings just because she couldn't relate, so it took her a moment to come up with an appropriate response.

“Chief, scars won't ever look pretty.” That was… still blunter than she would have liked, but Cinnabar worried that if she was any more direct, it would only worsen the problem. “After all, they're your body's marks of survival. When fighting death, or Mania, your body doesn't care about how you look; it cares about staying alive.”

Chief seemed caught off guard by this answer, but Cinnabar could see by the look in her eyes that she was not fully reassured. “I suppose. It doesn't stop me from feeling like an ugly monster, though.”

Cinnabar frowned, approaching and sitting a respectful distance from the Chief on the bed. Her dark hair curtained her face from this angle, yet Cinnabar could still see the most prominent of the scars peeking through. “If it helps at all, I don't see you that way, Chief. You're… wonderful. Incredible. I'm heavily scarred too, you know, so… I don't think anything of it. The only thing that your scars make me feel is… relief, that you're still here. That you're still at my side.”

Another long silence from the Chief had Cinnabar fearing that she'd said the wrong thing. Just as the bodyguard was about to try saying something else, her lover finally spoke. “Have I ever told you you're amazing, Cinnabar?”

Cinnabar couldn't help blushing a deep red. She was no stranger to these words of praise from her girlfriend, but no matter how much time passes, they always got the same reaction from her. “Y-You've mentioned it a time or two…”

Chief laughed again, and before Cinnabar could recover, the smaller woman had curled up against her side, head on her shoulder. Instinct led Cinnabar to quickly gather the Chief up in her arms. “Well, I'll keep saying it. It's true. I don't think I'll ever really be at peace with my scars, but… hearing you say these things does make me feel a little better. Thank you.”

Cinnabar suppressed an audible sigh of relief, hugging her closer. Her girlfriend let out a happy noise and snuggled against her. “It’s no problem, Chief. I'd do anything for you.”

And she would; to Cinnabar, Chief was the most important person in the world. Even if it meant betraying everything else she stood for… Cinnabar would always love, cherish and protect her beloved Chief.

PLUTO AND HOW IT RESPONDS TO OTHER PLANETARY ENERGIES

The energy of Pluto never showcases itself the same way from chart to chart. People with prominent Pluto placements are passionate and deeply emotional, but the ways in which they express this intensity differs greatly from person to person. starting at the top, his hair!

venti tends to sleep in trees a lot (he probably has his own actual house somewhere but he likes to nap in the wild for some reason), so he often has leaves or moss in his hair. he does his best to brush or wash it out when he can, but he hangs out outdoors so often it kind of doesn’t help

the tips of his braids glow when he’s excited, angry, flustered, etc.

no one (except for a choice few people, of course) has really guessed that the hair glow happens because he’s an archon

venti is so eccentric that people are just like “yeah we dunno he’s just like that it’s probs something to do w his vision idk”

sometimes, on particularly hot days or when he needs to keep it out of his face, he pulls it into a sort of half-up ponytail and pins his bangs to the side.

he likes to put feathers in the ends of his braids! he finds finch feathers pretty, and he also likes to use dvalin’s feathers sometimes

dvalin’s feathers glow with his hair, for some reason. maybe its the anemo? maybe it’s their strong connection? who knows

his hair is very fluffy and soft. he washes it often, and it tends to fluff out a little bit when it gets dry. having it braided and then undoing it after a while adds to the fluff.

moving down a bit, his face!

he has a mix of regular and glowy freckles! they’re a lot more prominent when he’s been out in the sun

he has a really bad habit of chewing on his lips when he’s writing or thinking very hard about something, so while they are soft, there’s always marks and cracks from where he bites them.

his cheeks are almost always rosy since he spends a lot of time outside.

he has some small scars around the edges of his face from when dvalin was a baby and liked to climb all over him (mostly onto his head)

i know archons technically don’t suffer ailments like eyestrain as badly as mortals do, but venti has been writing poetry for thousands of years. he probably gets migraines, and might wear reading glasses to write sometimes.

the glasses are intricately designed, and they’re one of the only things he’s ever saved up money for other than alcohol.

he just liked the pretty ones a lot, especially since they had a sort of winged/angelic theme to their design

i’m not really sure what shape the lenses would be, but i like the idea of them being round. they have a little chain on them that has a feather charm attached. the frames are golden (not actual gold, of course. though venti may or may not have been willing to pay the extra expenses had they been real gold.)

the handles are also golden, and they have feather shaped accents near where the frames connect.

anyway, he wears them out once in a while when he wants to work on his wips at the tavern or on the barbatos statue. he doesn’t drink much when he has them with him, because of course he would prefer to not break his favorite and only pair of glasses by passing out or otherwise.

venti has a bad habit of staying up too long and losing track of time, so occasionally he gets dark circles under his eyes

next up, his build and scars etc!

venti stands at about 5’ 4” (~163 cm)

his clothing hides a lot of the way he’s built, aside from his legs

he has a soft chest and tummy (perfect for putting ur head on for a nice nap)

he has surprisingly toned arms? he’s not noticeably buff like alhaitham or itto but he has a lot of muscle in his arms from using his bow.

speaking of his bow, he has a lot of scars from when he was still learning to use it

there’s a mark on his inner left arm from when he accidentally hit it with his bowstring. it used to happen so often that there’s a faint permanent scar there.

he has a lot of soreness and issues with his hands and wrists because he writes and uses his bow a lot, but it used to be MUCH worse when he was still learning

nowadays he knows how to handle the cramps and aches, but when he was learning, he had no idea how to ease them. he could barely write or play his lyre for a while because archery combined with composing music and poetry was taking a serious toll on his arms and hands.

he gets ink marks on his hands a lot

he paints his nails! he has a lot of different colored polishes but his favorite is a soft teal.

everyone knows about the archon markings on his chest and leg, but i raise you:

archon markings where his wings should be when he isn’t in his god form

which is why he wears the cape, since all his markings tend to glow dimly all the time and his shirt is kind of thin.

and finally, his outfit!

in his mortal form, venti loves to collect feathers, crystals, and flowers. he puts them wherever he can fit them, since he oftentimes doesn’t have a pocket or bag aside from his mora pouch. so, when he goes out to windrise for inspiration (or a nap) m, expect him to return with a windwheel aster weaved into a braid and maybe a dove feather tucked behind his ear.

when he’s embarrassed, venti will pull up both sides of his cape to hide his face in

he also tends to fidget with it and his hair when he’s nervous or bored

in my heart he wears thigh highs, idc what hoyoverse reveals them as if they ever do

somehow, venti has some sort of crazy luck and his socks always stay up. they might get a little bunched up in some places after battles, but they never fall completely.

is it archon stuff? black magic? just a venti thing? top ten questions science still can’t answer

he tends to keep a lot of things in his hat. he doesn’t carry much very often, so he can put a quill, his notebook, and a corked bottle of ink underneath it and carry it wherever he pleases.

the ribbon on his cape is only decorative. the cape actually has a small button and a loop that connects to keep it fastened.
