Darcy is not a grump
Darcy gets a bad rap as being glum and cranky, and while he does certainly have those moments, and he has a serious personality overall, he actually smiles a lot in the book, and all but one of those times are before his "transformation" from a dick to a nice guy!
So who is actually the most glum Austen hero? I searched the online texts of each of the six novels to find out, then made this chart:
Tumblr media
Things I found interesting in my research:
Darcy is actually more cheerful than most Austen heroes!
Darcy is described as expressing cheer twice as much as Bingley. In fact, Bingley is described as explicitly smiling zero times!
Knightley, who I always think of as being pretty serious, is actually the second most cheerful guy out of the whole lot
Edmund, who deserves to be sad because he sucks, is far and away the happiest hero, damn it
Only Bingley, Henry, Knightley, and Edmund laugh
Now obviously, the length of each book and the amount of time each character appears greatly affects this. For instance, Bingley gets far less page-time than Darcy, so it makes sense that we hear about his emotions far less—of course I am not suggesting that Bingley's temperament is actually more serious than Darcy's. I'm also certain that Henry Tilney would have won out over Edmund as the most cheerful hero if Northanger Abbey was as long as Mansfield Park is; NA is only about 77k words, while MP is twice as long at 159k words. Plus, MP spends a lot more time in the man's POV than most of the novels do. If I was a statistician, I would find a way to adjust for these factors, but even I am not that nerdy.
My full notes are under the cut, if you're a complete Janeite nerd like me and want to dig into my non-scientific data.
Edward: 1 smile, 1 description of surroundings that "exceedingly pleased him", 1 "heard with pleasure", 2 cheerful; total 5
Bingley: 0 smiles!!!, 1 "expression of half-laughing alarm," 1 laugh, 1 pleased, 1 "expressed great pleasure" but might be polite figure of speech, 1 "looking both pleased and embarrassed," 1 "ease and cheerfulness", 1 "was all grateful pleasure" but not sure if accurate/sincere; total 6
Wentworth: 2 smiles, 1 "little smile," 1 "half smiling," 1 "almost a smile," 1 "artificial" smile, 1 "smiles reined in" which I think applies to both W and Anne, 1 assumed laughing as part of a group, 1 joined a walk with pleasure; total 7
Brandon: 1 "faint smile," 1 "tried to smile", part of 1 "every body laugh", 1 pleased, 1 received civilities with pleasure, 1 pleasure "will be very great", 1 "his open pleasure in meeting her", 1 "engaged with pleasure", 2 cheerful; total 8
Darcy: 8 smiles, 1 "a sort of smile," 1 "smile of affected incredulity" when E's talking about Wickham during the proposal, 1 "expression of heartfelt delight", 1 "delighted with their engagement", 1 meditating with pleasure on fine eyes, 1 thinking cheerfully; total 13
Henry: 8 smiles, 1 "endeavouring not to smile," 1 "set smile" but he's trying to be funny, part of 1 "everybody smiled", 1 laugh, 1 "you are laughing" said by C directed at H but the narrator doesn't say he's laughing or smiling but he certainly is teasing, part of 1 group laugh, 2 times being amused, 2 delighted with C, 1 "pleasure of finding nothing to detain me" but unsure if polite figure of speech: total 19
Knightley: 14 smiles, 1 "reproachful smile," 1 "trying not to smile and succeeded without difficulty," 1 "she forced him to smile," 1 "trying not to smile," 1 laugh, 2 pleased, 1 amused, 1 feeling of "delightful assurance", 1 pleasure, 1 "pleasure always" re: being with Jane, 1 "chat of pleasure", 1 cheerful: total 23
Edmund: 10 smiles, 1 "you may smile" said by Mary directed at E, 1 "serious smile," 1 smile by "the three others" but I can't tell if E is one of those three, 1 "smile that did not sit easy," 1 smile that seems to be from E but might be from F, part of 1 group laugh but F thinks E is struggling to be cheerful but is successful, part of 1 group laugh off-page, 1 laugh, 1 pleased, 1 amused, 2 delighted, 1 "delightful happiness", 4 pleasure, part of 2 group pleasure, part of 3 cheerful groups, 3 cheerful: total 32
I counted every mention of a smile, laugh, or looking amused or pleased, or having delight or pleasure, or being cheerful. If there was a mention of everybody or a group smiling or laughing, and the guy was part of the group, I counted it. "Faint smiles" and the like are counted, as are instances where the guy is trying to not smile, but I did not count any time the narrator said the guy tried to smile, forced a smile, laughed bitterly, etc.—only genuine cheer, however small, counts! I also did not count any instance of the guy expressing "his pleasure" when it was clear it was just a polite figure of speech.
Searched for: smile/ing, laugh, amuse, pleased, pleasure, delight, cheerful, happy countenance, happy face, happy look, happy expression, look of happiness, expression of happiness
Did not search: gay, gaiety, joy, felicity, merry, merriment, or happy/happiness without modifiers, because this already took way too many hours (yes, hours) as it was!

Having now finished The Eagle (2011), I can say I've never been more confused about whether or not I like a piece of media. Do I think the whole premise surrounding that stupid golden eagle was cool? No. Did I feel any shred of sympathy for the "plight" and "noble sacrifice" of the Romans that got their butts handed to them? Lol no. Would I read a 500k+ word fanfic of Esca and Marcus having a slowburn romance north of Hadrian's Wall, never to return to Rome at all? Absolutely.

Pride & Prejudice (2005): A SessKik AU ❝It is a truth universally acknowledged, that a single man in possession of a good fortune, must be in want of a wife.❞
We follow the turbulent relationship between Kikyo, the daughter of a country gentleman, and Sesshomaru, a rich aristocratic landowner as they must overcome the titular sins of pride and prejudice in order to fall in love and marry...
 ❧ [Intro]
Hello my lovelies! Welcome to the madness! I'll be slowly illustrating key parts of the Pride and Prejudice (2005) movie in hopes of opening the fandom's eyes to SessKik romance.
Dedicated to my dearest friend @magical-campanula who inspired all this with her beautiful mind and HCs! She is indeed the blueprint. May you have the happiest of birthdays today friend! c:

I still can't get over that once, I saw someone write that they disliked Elizabeth Bennet because she was an "author avatar Mary Sue."
I understand taking that viewpoint if you only read the first half of Pride and Prejudice, before Darcy's letter. The impression the first half creates is "Most of these people are silly, obnoxious, or both. Witty, sensible, charming Elizabeth, who's usually the smartest person in the room, cleverly judges and mocks them all, while giving warm affection and esteem to the few who really deserve it." This is more or less the way she views herself and the narrative plays along with it. If you stop reading before Darcy's letter, then she might indeed come across as an "author avatar Mary Sue."
But then all of the above is deconstructed by Darcy's letter.
Elizabeth realizes – and we realize – that she hasn't been such a good judge of character or the cleverest person in the room after all. Her cynical, witty judgments have been just as faulty as her sister Jane's naïve idealism. She's been full of herself, and she's judged Darcy more negatively than he ever deserved (not that he hasn't been at fault too, but still...) because he stung her personal vanity, while letting herself be charmed and misled by Wickham because he flattered her. She's been very much at fault and she learns a lesson, just like we later learn that Darcy did after she rejected him.
A similar arc applies to Mr. Bennet, the person who has clearly influenced Elizabeth the most throughout her life. At first we're set up to like him for his wit, and to view him as the good, sensible Bennet parent in contrast to his silly, obnoxious wife. But then we realize – and Elizabeth is forced to realize – that no, he hasn't been a good parent, he's been irresponsible and mean-spirited toward his wife and younger daughters, and he's just as much to blame as Mrs. Bennet for all their problems.
How anyone can call Elizabeth a Mary Sue after reading the entire book is beyond me. Some people can't seem to let go of their first impression of her, even though the faultiness of first impressions is one of the novel's main themes.

Synastry observations based on (personal) experience, part 5:
I’m back!!!! After months lmao
Moon opposite mars: a big ‘want’. Moon opposite mars is a story. It’s every romance movie/ romcom aspect, and i’ll tell you why. These people see in each other the potential of moon conjunct mars fullfillment that’s actually (way, but opinions differ ofc) better than the conjunction. That’s because in the opposition, each has something the other lacks. This can create for both people the ultimate romantic fullfilment when brought together by effort and acceptance of each other, and this promise is very hard to let go of. Typically, these are couples that fight a lot but find it very hard to let each other go once they know what they can have with each other, because it really is the best. Just think about it, even the thought of people putting conscious effort to be sweeter to one another is precious. That only creates a bond that’s very raw and very real (quoting jewelastrology here). Then combine that with the power of the mars and the moon and the friction of the opposition, keeping things interesting and keeping both parties learning more. You shouldn’t romanticise struggle in a relationship. Too much ‘work’ can just mean you aren’t compatible. THIS aspect is an exception. Just watch out for possible aggression. That’s never okay. One day I’ll make a seperate post about the amount of moon opposite mars couples in literature. The best I can think of now is Pride and Prejudice, with Mr Darcy being mars and Elizabeth Bennet being moon.
Venus twelfth house overlay: sorry y’all, in my personal experience, it’s true what they say. The twelfth house person has a hard time feeling this overlay on their side, or on a very subconscious level. I was the 12th house person. On one hand, I really ‘got it’ so to say but on the other hand, I don’t have a shitty clue of how he picked up on this ‘thing between us’ he thought or picked up on we had. That’s actually the big thing about this overlay. Don’t lose all hope, but you’ll have one person going “you knoww like there’s this thing between us...” and the 12th house person will be going: “what thing?” 😂 this can actually be nice because the 12th house person will get in touch with that subconscious twelfth housey part of themselves IF there are other nicely supporting aspects. Like the venus person’s venus to other stuff. They say a true connection is always mutual. I want to say to you all that don’t be surprised when a 12th house person in such an overlay is not ‘feeling’ this mutually. I literally wrote in my diary: “i might actually like him when it’s too late. Or just never lol i do not know.”
Update: I wrote this observation months ago in like april. It is now october and I’m starting to gain interest in him, albeit slowly and subconsciously, but, yeah 🤦‍♀️😂 i came back to this draft being like “WHATT?? Astrology had predicted this TOO for me???”
Moon trine pluto: you know when the fighting super intense troubled couple FINALLY gets together in this really intense and satisfying time when things are finally going the way they’re planned? Like an end all all good? That is this overlay, but constantly. On the outside, it’s the annoyingly passionate/emotional couple in a series that you don’t get because you haven’t seen them do any work to deserve this kind of intense fan-service scene. It’s because it lacked that kind of character development? It was me watching avengers infinity war with vision and wanda. I didn’t like the couple because i didn’t get it. I didn’t know their history i thought it was just some random very bland peaceful couple being very dramatic about each other all the time. Another example (i’m not shitting on this aspect i swear 😂) when a cartoon shows an example of a ‘romantic movie scene’ where the couple says “i loove you!!” And the other goes “oh bill!!” You don’t swoon because you’re like… okay. You get the oogies/ick because it’s like ‘ew that’s a couple’ anyways what I’m trying to say is that moon and pluto are not typical besties they’re supposed to be two problems kind of, they’re two very intense and bare planets, so harmonious flowing energy between them will feel kind of unsettling? Even. So these people will be kind of ‘gross’ with each other but in a soothing way. It’s how you imagine such a trine to be, but it plays out exactly like this irl too lmao! It feels bland on the outside because it’s always going well. And on the inside it plays in the background, because issues bring moon and pluto stuff to the foreground as a ‘theme’ in the relationship. So this aspect is also is the simple idea-of-a-passionate relationship. It’s the groaning “I’ll never let you go!!” Which doesn’t hit the same way for some people because there isn’t any drama or shit that happened before to deserve this pay off. However, some people loooove this aspect and by that I mean people in real life who like to have a secure and deep relationship where two hidden parts of people correspond and love each other well. This aspect is reaallly hard to let go of lol.
Sun conjunct mars: I call this the ‘spicy friends’ aspect. This is the aspect of two people who get into shenanigans together. I also see this aspect a lot with romantic couples who got together young, because it makes for boy-girl relations where the boy actually gets motivated by the person the girl is and the girl feels understood on the same level by the boy. They don’t get bored and so these people will forever get on or be aggravated by each other. It’s because these are two extremely conscious ‘in the moment’ planets so they easily fire off each other and it doesn’t take a lot of energy to have that interaction. Not in the plutonically karmic way, but in a personal way I currently cannot describe. No in between. It creates a bond that people can’t really get in between. You just have to let them stay friends/buds until they get sick of each other, and they may even repeat the process after that. Either way, this is an aspect that makes people get together fast ! Their conscious behaviour is accelerated by each other.
Sun conjunct venus: unlike mars, venus is a cold planet, which is totally okay in a synastry, only the interaction plays out a little different. Sun and venus don’t fire off each other. Their influence on each other is more passive and more ‘mental’. The sun, how basic it may sound, warms venus or even makes them burn. Venus gives the sun person chills. The venus person is responsible for the harmony and awesome functionality that this aspect brings. They will take a step back to fully adore and admire sun from afar sometimes. The sun will run to venus basically when it needs love and beauty and also a kind of sensibility that the sun person misses, like a puzzle piece. Sun brings heat and passion that the venus craves. These people will often crave for how the other person makes them feel. Venus typically loves every little thing the sun person does and the sun person is just taken by the venus person every single day. Think Oliver (venus) and Loretta (sun) from Only Murders In The Building. This aspect makes for real contentment in a relationship.
Mars in twelfth house synastry or composite: with this placement, you’re not even sure if the person is actually even attracted to you and if you’re making it all up in your head. This is also typically seen as a ‘synastry/composite of secrets’ which I wasn’t so sure about at the time I experienced this one myself, but now I realise, hey, that man actually had a girlfriend while he was giving me ‘special attention’ while holding back, with me being like ‘what could he mean what could he MEAN’ typical mars in twelfth scenario. One guy I had this with in composite was basically lying to me about his sex life and not having cheated on his previous girlfriend… and guess what… I had lied about my sexual history too 😭 I even thought to myself ‘why the f*ck did I lie that elaborately??? I didn’t even have to??’ But whatever, it’s the way of the worlds apparently 😂 but you see how this immediately creates distrust when it is not actually what we mean to do or coming from a place of disrespect. Oh and this aspect in composite also created months of us being like ‘🧍🏻‍♀️….🧍🏻‍♂️’ not normal sexual tension, but sexual tension we weren’t sure should be concreticised out loud or in action. We’d only kissed once Monthsss before which is basically nothing in western european student culture. It was like: “does this person know I’m still, in this moment, attracted to/like him/her? Am I making this all up in my head?”
Moon in the 8th house: a lot has been said about this aspect. Just a few things: intensity, yes. Either one will always be a significant person for the rest the person’s lives. It’s not nothing. It’s the basis of real all consuming love that’s a very rare and unique mix between total safety and total rush-like danger, which makes people think it’s a soulmate aspect. It’s actually not, imo, it’s a deeply (deeeeply) karmic aspect. It’s funny to see all the friends with benefits who have this aspect start out as “lol we don’t want a relationship” to “……. Lol nevermind” and end up together. They go back to each other because they’re simply too significant to each other. Fear of being vulnurable is also big on both so they either take that step or they’re just standing there forever. Mutual aspect, but it’s mutual in different ways. Truthfully, I don’t see this aspect so often in relationship charts. I see it with people who are in love with each other and aren’t together, or people who started out casual but still for some reason can’t let each other go after more than a year, or people who have had the roughest most obsessive breakup in history and ask me for advice. Often, people in relationships who have this aspect don’t come to astrologers for advice. They’re too ‘into’ one another to do that, I feel like.
Venus trine moon: cute cute cUTE because the venus loves reassuring the moon person with affection, which makes the moon person feel so safe and endorphined and warm. The moon person simply inspires that in venus! Great for a chart with more difficult aspects !
Moon conjunct jupiter: so if a guy is jupiter and the moon is a woman and they’re married, the woman doesn’t need to worry about jupiter feeling turned off from the relationship by her pregnancy. Moon is the feminine, the nurturer, the mother, jupiter adores and respects her. Jupiter inspires respect, optimism, friendships and all things serotonin. Jupiter will make the moon feel good. The kind of union where the guy will constantly declare how much he lovees her pregnancy glow ✨ the same goes ofc for lesbian relationships but since this is a cultural phenomenon i thought i might touch on it.
Moon opposite jupiter: i feel like this might be the opposite story :/ the girls motherhood and need for support and needs in general will just be the opposite to what the jupiter person finds ‘fun’ and joyful, BUT if they’ve made it this far in the relationship as to have a child together it should be okay. At least the cause of the behaviour would moreso be astrology, not misogyny.
Moon square jupiter: wife jokes, but the ones that are cute and funny.
Moon in third:
Being someone with a moon in third house be like: wow imagine going through something hard and not type 10k words in your notes app about it.
Having your moon overlay in someone’s third house be like: wow imagine going through something and not telling that person 10k words about it
Also: jupiter has such an underrated influence on us in astrology!! Jupiter radiates the most energy out of all the planets in our solar system and may be way more personal and influential than we think in astrology… And in synastry also it’s the MOON

Casually Proposing To Jason Todd:
Warning: Suggestive at the end
You were lying with Jason in bed while he was reading Pride and Prejudice to you. You were laying on his chest, listening to the beat of his heart.
You couldn't help but fidget with the small, black, velvet box in the pocket of your his hoodie.
You've had the ring for weeks now. You were sure you wanted to marry him, to spend the rest of your life with him. But you didn't know when would be the right time.
You also knew Jason didn't like labels. So, did he even want to marry you? Did he just like what you two have now?
You were satisfied with what you have now. But you couldn't help but want that little band around your finger as a little reminder that the two of you will be together forever.
"You still with me, mama?" his voice interrupting you from your thoughts. You look up to him, admiring his face and placing a soft kiss against one of the moles on his neck.
"Mhm, keep reading," you say, laying your head on his shoulder.
Jason bookmarks the novel, placing it on the nightstand beside him, shuffling to face you. He kisses your forehead, brushing stray hairs away from your face.
"You've been zoning out a couple of times these past couple of weeks, doll. What's up? Y'know you can talk to me," he softly says, showing hints of worry in his voice.
Your arm wraps around his torso, cuddling closer to him. Fuck it. No better time like the present.
"What would you say if I asked you to marry me?" You ask, avoiding eye contact with him while fiddling the hem of his shirt.
Jason chuckles, "Sorry, what?"
"I said what would you say if I asked you to marry me," you repeat, more quietly this time, worried that this might've been a mistake.
He playfully laughs. "I dunno babe. Maybe you'd have to ask me for real to find out," he jokes.
You take a breath and pull out the box from your pocket, opening it up to reveal the ring.
You feel Jason's breath stop for a split second, and his heart beat speeding up. He doesn't say anything, so you speak up before he gets a chance to respond.
"Jay... I know you don't like labels, but... the only person I can imagine spending the rest of my life with is you. You go on and on about how I deserve better, or I deserve to be with someone better. But you're better. You're perfect. And I do want to spend the rest of my life with you. I wanna wake up every day with you, and I wanna go to sleep every night with you. I just want you. And I know we don't have to get married to make all of that happen... I dunno it's probably stupid, but... Will you marry me?"
You look up to him with hopeful eyes, hoping he'd say yes. But he doesn't say anything. He just keeps staring at you.
"You- you don't have to say yes, I just wante-mmph!"
You were quickly interrupted with Jason's lips, colliding against your own, turning you over so he's hoverung above you. You smiled and kissed him back. When you broke the kiss, he peppered quick, small kisses around your face, making you giggle as you slid the ring on his finger.
He manoeuvred his lips to your neck. "Was this what my baby was worrying about all week? Worried that I'd say no?" His voice drops an octave, starting to nibble on your skin.
"I- I thought you didn't like labels," you say, trying to hold back your moans.
Jason couldn't help but lightly laugh at your silly thoughts.
"Fuck, mama. You could've asked me to marry you in the middle of a fight, and I still would've said yes to my pretty girl," he says, rolling his hips down against yours.
"Fuck- Jason!" You whimpered, hands gripping his curled, fluffy hair.
"Shh, relax doll. Lemme show you how much I wanna spend the rest of my life with you."

Both Pride & Prejudice and Much Ado About Nothing work so well as enemies to lovers because despite surface animosity, it's clear that both end couples really respect each other and for good reasons. I think you could even argue that with Beatrice, she spars with Benedick because she considers him a worthy opponent.
When Hero and Ursuala plot to make Beatrice fall in love, Hero instructs her to speak of Benedick and "praise him more than ever man did merit" and yet when Beatrice finally speaks, she doesn't disagree with their high praise, she says of Benedick:
For others say thou dost deserve, and I Believe it better than reportingly.
Benedick likewise after his eavesdropping on Don Pedro, Leonato, and Claudio's praise Beatrice says:
They say the lady is fair; 'tis a truth, I can bear them witness; and virtuous; 'tis so, I cannot reprove it; and wise, but for loving me; by my troth, it is no addition to her wit, nor no great argument of her folly, for I will be horribly in love with her.
Similarly in Pride & Prejudice, once the misunderstanding about Wickham is cleared away, Elizabeth is able to acknowledge to herself how much she respects and likes Darcy:
She began now to comprehend that he was exactly the man who, in disposition and talents, would most suit her. His understanding and temper, though unlike her own, would have answered all her wishes. It was an union that must have been to the advantage of both: by her ease and liveliness, his mind might have been softened, his manners improved; and from his judgment, information, and knowledge of the world, she must have received benefit of greater importance.
Darcy also finds that he admires Elizabeth, after initially dismissing her:
But no sooner had he made it clear to himself and his friends that she had hardly a good feature in her face, than he began to find it was rendered uncommonly intelligent by the beautiful expression of her dark eyes. To this discovery succeeded some others equally mortifying. Though he had detected with a critical eye more than one failure of perfect symmetry in her form, he was forced to acknowledge her figure to be light and pleasing; and in spite of his asserting that her manners were not those of the fashionable world, he was caught by their easy playfulness.
All of these characters also hear and accept criticism of themselves. Both Benedick and Beatrice hear they are too proud to accept love, which they both overcome. Elizabeth learns that she judged Darcy without sufficient information and Darcy that his behaviour was not that of a gentleman. Their mutual acceptance of this criticism and their growth as people leads to their ultimate happiness.
Unfortunately, those who reproduce this trope often forget to build this foundation of respect and the acknowledgement, either personally or publically, that the characters have been wrong. Instead we get characters who mid argument begin ripping each other's clothes off. No growth, no understanding how they have been wrong, it just becomes "thin line between hatred and love" instead of "we grew towards each other".

There are so many wonderful forgotten Darcy x Elizabeth moments in Pride and Prejudice after they get engaged, but one that I think would be so delicious to see in a film adaptation is Darcy's secret smile to Elizabeth after Mr. Bennet has given him permission to marry her.
[S]he sat in misery till Mr. Darcy appeared again, when, looking at him, she was a little relieved by his smile. In a few minutes he approached the table where she was sitting with Kitty; and, while pretending to admire her work said in a whisper, “Go to your father, he wants you in the library.”
– Chapter 59, Pride and Prejudice
Can you imagine this? The intimacy of them making eye contact across the room, the adorableness of his elated smile, the hotness of him leaning over her and whispering to her? God I need to see this so bad!

hi hi it's me again, back from the void
so like i've been so absolutely sick these past few days, it's horrid, but I've not been able to stop thinking about Jason bc y'know, total brain rot over here
anyway, i just need a jason in my life to give me cuddles and read to me while I'm sick and make me soup and gimme kisses and ugh i wish he was real so baddd 😭
- the very sickly lil 🦊
POOKIE????? first of all, how are you feeling now? i do understand your brain rot, i've been thinking a lot about jason while at work and i get too lost on it sometimes heh now let me get you something that can make you feel better 🫡 listen to this when you read, check on the trad bc the song is so sweet ): HOPE THIS HELPS TO CHEER YOU UP, 🦊
jason takes his vigilante shifts as serious as it's possible, after all that's his life and there's nothing more important than that or it was like that before you. there's no way he finds something else to get his mind busy when you're all he can think of and believe me when i say, he makes everything he can for you to always get the princess treatment you deserve and he couldn't help it, from the first time he laid his eyes on you he was totally in love and even when things weren't easy at first you both worked them through and that had gotten you here.
now jason can't see himself just going out on patrol when you're sick, that's the case now, it's a cold but a strong one and he's worried "grayson, i'm not joking- yeah, just one night i swear i'll owe you a big one" you can hear his voice as he speaks with dick, you had tried to convince him that you could rest on your bed and you would be fine but he wouldn't leave you when you weren't feeling good. his heavy steps let you know he's walking back into the room and jason smiles softly when you look at him from under the blankets "how are you feeling now, baby?" he asks as he sits next to you, his hand reaching to touch your forehead so he can check your temperature.
"i guess that there's no point on telling you i'm feeling good, right?" you asks with a soft chuckle, his touch is so gentle that it makes you feel fuzzy inside as he shakes his head before lying next to you "i'm not going on patrol, dick is going to cover me with bruce" jason tells you when he wraps his arms around you, pulling you closer so you nuzzle your head against his side "so i'll stay here to make sure you really take care of yourself"
he makes sure you're comfortable next to him and when you look up at him jason smiles brightly, is something so usual of him to you, even when there are bad and rough days or fights between you two there's also good moments like this and you both have made sure they are what matters the most because there's been enough shit that happened to you and him to cling into more of it. jason picks up the book he's currently reading, once again pride and prejudice because he knows you like it when he reads to you, jason would lean in to whisper some lines into your ear before he kisses your temple while his other hand plays with your hair.
"are we feeling better, princess?" he asks in a whisper, a chaste kiss to your cheek and one more in your lips because jason really doesn't mind if he gets sick too because that means you'll take care of him too "i feel better now... but i'm a little hungry" you say, voice gruffy and eyes a little sleepy thanks to your boyfriend's soothing presence and cuddles, he nods and sits straight on the bed with a thoughtful expression before letting out a hum "want some soup?" and as soon as you nod jason is walking to the kitchen because it's what has to be done if it gets his love to feel better and happy.

These are all stand alone chapters so you do not have to read one before the other! This series came from my post about wanting to nap with Copia all around the abbey. The stories will all have gender neutral readers and soft Copia naps.
Warnings: fluffy nap time in the library, sfw, 440 words

“Careful Cardinal, they’ll kick you out if they catch you drooling on the books.”
“Eh?  Wh–cazzo.”  Copia woke up with a start, quickly looking around the library before turning to you with narrowed eyes.  “I wasn’t sleeping.”
“Sure, sure.”  You dropped down next to him on the plush couch and reached over for the book in his lap.  “What are we reading tonight?”
“Ah, a classic.  20,000 Leagues Under The Sea.”
“Oh nice, I was in the mood for a good adventure.”
Copia wrapped an arm around your shoulders as you settled against him.  He sighed when you took part of the blanket but when you glanced at him all he gave you was a wink, humoring you like always.
“Are you comfortable?”
“Yes, grazie Cardinal.”  He snorted, giving your shoulder a squeeze before rubbing a gloved hand over the cover of the book.  You caught him staring into the fireplace, the flames dancing across his face as you reached up to hold the hand on your shoulder.  “Everything ok?”
“Oh, sÌ.  Sì."  He looked back at you while he tapped the cover of the book.  “Primo used to read this to me when I was a child.”
“Really?”
Copia nodded, grinning at whatever memory had popped into his head.
“And Terzo would read The Hobbit.  They both were very good at doing all the voices.”
“What about Secondo?”  You opened the book up, turning to the beginning.  “Did he read anything to you?”
“Pride and Prejudice.”
“Really?”
“He was also good at doing the voices.”  You laughed, shaking your head at the brothers’ antics.  “Well how about I take a turn?”
“Hmm?”
“You settle back and let me read this to you.”  When he didn’t answer you turned to look at him.  Copia looked tired, another long week of Ministry work wearing on him.  You felt lucky he still agreed to meet you for your little book club you had started months ago.  Hopefully this would be a good opportunity for him to relax.  “What do you think?”
“Will you do the voices?”
“I can’t promise I’ll be as good as Primo but I will do my best.”
The fond smile he gave you was one you would be tucking into your memory.  There was trust there too, something you had found in him as well.  Copia’s body relaxed as he rested his head against the back of the couch and you were barely past the first chapter before his breathing had deepened.  The soft sounds of his snores were as comforting as the fire was and you continued to read to your Cardinal as he got some well deserved rest.

THE MALFOY MANSION, annual Christmas ball, 1966
Settling down, you sighed contently as you opened your book.
Pride and prejudice
Eyes flitting across the first page, you absentmindedly caressed the silky pages of the book between your fingers as you concentrated on the first few words:
'It is a truth universally acknowledged, that a single man in possession of --'
You jumped as the door to the broom cupboard creaked open, interrupting your reading.
"Hello?" A small boy peeped inside and entered, looking curiously at what you were holding. "I'm Sirius."
He had very messy black hair, and was dressed in an expensive looking black and white suit. Although, you noticed, his tie was hung loosely around his neck.
"You're a Black." You stated without hesitation, your voice lacking any of the warmth that was present in his.
"Would you like to play?" He asked, though his easy smile was now uncertain, and you got the impression that he had left out his surname in his introduction intentionally, "It's really boring out there." He gestured with his head down the marble corridor towards the main hall, where the Malfoy's ball was being held.
"I'm not interested." You spoke, making a point of staring fixatedly at the small text resting in your lap.
The boy ignored the hostility in your voice, "Woah!" His eyes lit up, noticing the embellished cover, "I've heard of that book! Isn't it by a muggle author--"
He flinched as you snapped the book shut, rounding on him, "And so what? Contrary to your family's vile beliefs, muggles are fascinating and deserve to be treated and respected equally as wizards are."
He looked too taken aback at your harshness to speak, and you continued, "So if you don't mind, Black, I'd like to read my book." You paused, "And if you snitch to my mother, I will hex you."
Not that you knew any hexes - you were only seven after all - but you weren't willing to risk your strict pureblood mother finding out.
It had been your father who had gotten the book for you, giving it to you privately as a Christmas present only once you agreed not to show or tell anyone else. Muggles had always intrigued him, and he saw nothing wrong with his curious daughter immersing herself in their literature.
Black stood there, crestfallen, hurt painted across his features, and left.
The next time you saw him, any sign of sadness had been replaced by a firm glare; one you gladly returned.
"Second base?"
James stayed silent. He focused stubbornly on walking to the 6th year's first class.
"Third?"
James winced and Sirius laughed, slapping him on the back, "I knew it!"
"What??" James responded, exasperated, "I never said- well- it doesn't matter." He shook his head helplessly, pushing his glasses up as they began to slip.
Remus was already tired of Sirius' antics, "Glad you got that sorted. Can we talk about something else now?"
Just as Sirius opened his mouth to respond, he noticed someone, "Look who it is." He murmured, before going to confront you.
Remus noticed James' face pale slightly.
Pushing through the gaggle of students in the crowded corridor, you made your way to transfiguration. You were walking alone, as Serafina and your other friends needed to make a quick stop at the bathroom.
You heard a familiar laugh and froze.
"Going somewhere?" Taunted a deep voice. The same one from the train.
Turning around, you became face to face with Sirius Black. The rest of his group were stood behind him, and your eyes briefly flitted to James, who was looking determinedly at the cracks in the floor.
It looked like you'd be alone on this one.
Responding with exaggerated enthusiasm, you began to talk, "To the same class as you? Where else?" You cocked a brow, crossing your arms. You had decided the previous night: Sirius Black wasn't going to ruin your second-to-last year at Hogwarts.
Attempting to look intimidating, he stepped closer. His glare didn't waver, and you swallowed. The confidence was practically oozing out of him.
Black's eyes seemed to dance over your face as he took you in, making you feel more self-conscious by the second. Your eyes stung as you fought the increasing urge to blink.
Despite not wanting to give in, to admit defeat, you were painfully aware that class was about to start.
You cleared your throat, stepping away. Automatically losing whatever standoff the two of you had been engaged in.
"I'm done with this." You said, firmly, and began to walk in the opposite direction, deciding to quickly throw one more snide remark over your shoulder, "Oh-- and it's nice to finally know how to shut you up Black."
He tilted his head, you'd undoubtedly gotten his attention. You decided it was too late not to keep going, "If I'd have known that all it took for you to shut up was to stare into my eyes, I'd have never stopped looking at you." You taunted, smirking.
Black looked intrigued, and Remus looked as though he was fighting not to laugh. James and Peter had disappeared.
"Only because it's so ugly I couldn't form any words." He yelled as you turned away, but it sounded half-hearted. And it definitely wasn't up to the usual Sirius Black comeback standard you'd come to expect.
"What are you, five?" You said, grinning slightly, even though he couldn't see.
"One of us is!" He called out spitefully.
Rolling your eyes, you were now power walking through the corridor- determined not to be late to class. Your eyes were strained at the end corner, eager to get away from the sensation of Black's eyes burning into your back. It felt as though hot water was trickling down your spine, making you shiver.
A slight tingling sensation overcame your body for a split second, but it was gone so quickly that you thought nothing of it. You sighed in relief once you were a safe distance away, shaking your head in disbelief at what had just happened.
Once you made it to class you hurried inside, walking down the aisle in the middle as you headed to your designated seat at the front. But something wasn't right, and you realised the class had gone silent.
You stopped in confusion. Everyone was staring at you: even the cat on McGonagall's desk widened it's yellow-rimmed eyes.
"What now?" You groaned, turning an accusatory eye at everyone who was staring. Serafina had gone quiet, and quickly stood up to make her way to you.
Suddenly the cat on the desk leaped off, and you jumped as it morphed into your transfiguration teacher. You tried to hide your shock-- you had never witnessed McGonagall as an animagus first hand. Except you didn't have long to dwell on this thought, as she too had a similar expression as everyone else.
"Miss (L/n), have you..." she paused.
It wasn't like McGonagall to be at a loss for words.
"Have you looked in the mirror lately, dear?" She asked firmly, with a hint of sympathy just as the Marauders entered.
There were scattered snickers followed by laughter across the classroom as you turned red, suddenly extremely self-conscious.
Then a sleazy voice spoke up, "Who's bed did you climb out of this morning, (L/n)?"
You spun around to glare at a blonde Gryffindor, "Who do you think you--"
The marauders were still positioned at the entry to the classroom, and the tallest one finally decided to intervene, "Nice change of clothes, (L/n)." Sirius Black smirked.
And you looked down, horrified.
Your usual green and silver uniform was now a bold red and gold.
"Y'know, red's your colour." He added, smirking.
For a moment, you stood there. Deadly still, taking in what was happening, taking in the wide eyes of everyone in the class, taking in Black's disgustingly smug expression.
And then pure, overwhelming anger engulfed every single feeling and any rational thoughts. You stormed out of the classroom.
Pausing for a millisecond as you struggled to open the door, Black took it as an opportunity to lean towards you, "Just a joke," He said, in the least sympathetic voice you had ever heard, his eyes carving the image of your humiliation into his brain, "just a little bit of fun--"
Sirius Black was flung backwards, slamming into the stone wall behind.
You had always found the knockback jinx to be effective. You lowered your wand as the other marauders rushed to Black's side.
He quickly stood up, humiliated.
"That's detention. Both of you!" McGonagall shouted sternly, as you left the room without looking back once, creasing the note James had slipped you as you left.
You spent the rest of that period figuring out how to undo the charm that had changed the colour of your robes. You couldn't be bothered to head back to the common room, and so you opted for the abandoned girls' bathrooms. Except you had immediately identified that decision as a mistake due to Moaning Myrtle deciding to take it as an opportunity to make fun of you for half an hour.
Once you had finally figured out the reversal spell and the deep green paired with silver was back, you met with Serafina at the end of Transfiguration.
"He's an asshole, (Y/n)." She immediately began, noticing the slight guilt in your expression, "You saw how quickly he got up, I'm sure you didn't seriously injure him or anything."
"I know." You stated, fixated on adjusting your bag strap.
Besides," She added, "he deserved it for that little stunt he pulled."
You hummed in agreement, cheeks burning in humiliation as you realised how utterly ridiculous you must have looked earlier. In an attempt to distract yourself, you pulled out the piece of folded paper James had given you earlier. It emerged from the pocket of your robes slightly ripped and crumpled.
Your eyes quickly skimmed over the messy, slanted handwriting.
𓂃𓂃𓂃𓂃𓂃𓂃𓂃𓂃𓂃𓂃𓂃𓂃𓂃𓂃𓂃
ᴵ'ᵐ ˢᵒʳʳʸ
ˢᵗᵃʳᵗ ᵒᶠ ˡᵘⁿᶜʰ~ ᵖʳᵉᶠᵉᶜᵗˢ ᵇᵃᵗʰʳᵒᵒᵐ.
𓂃𓂃𓂃𓂃𓂃𓂃𓂃𓂃𓂃𓂃𓂃𓂃𓂃𓂃𓂃
Sera read nosily over your shoulder.
"You gonna go?" She knew about what you and James had been up to over the summer, and supported you both.
"I don't know." You sighed, desperately hoping you'd imagined the sickening crack earlier when Black had hit the wall, "I'll see."
"I think you need a stress reliever girl." She continued, voice hushed, "Besides, what better way to get back at Sirius Black than hooking up with one of his best friends?"
And so you did. But not before quickly checking the hospital wing to make sure no Gryffindor boys had recently been admitted.
The library was empty, just as you liked it. You hummed to yourself quietly as you casually flipped through the school's edition of 'Advanced Potion Making'. Slughorn had recommended rereading the book as a form of revision for an upcoming quiz, and you were eager to do well.
After half an hour of intense reading you began to read the same sentence over and over again. Eyes beginning to feel heavy, you set the book down. It was beginning to get late anyway, you supposed this was a sign to head back to the common room before curfew.
You got up, stretching your arms as you did so, and headed back to place the book you had borrowed. Just as you reached the bookshelf, a small gasp from in front startled you. You wildly looked around in an attempt to find the source of the sound, not entirely sure that you wanted to.
That was when you saw through a tiny gap in the bookshelf something that made your insides churn.
A pretty Ravenclaw girl was pressed against a bookshelf, her eyes shut in bliss, as a tall gryffindor boy with wavy black hair kissed her neck. You quickly diverted your eyes.
It didn't take a lot to figure out who the boy was. And that he definitely hadn't sustained any injuries from earlier.
So this was Black's latest conquest.
Still fuming at the events that had taken place in Transfiguration and suddenly feeling a lot better about the fact that Black had escaped unscathed, you decided to take the matter into your own hands.
You checked the time. You still had a few minutes before curfew-- and what was the harm in having a little fun?
His low groans were beginning to make you feel sick. Sliding your borrowed book back into place, you peeked around the corner and raised your wand, muttering, 'wingardium leviosa'.
A simple spell, but a classic.
A lock of hair on the back of Black's head swung up in the air then dropped down again. Thinking nothing of it, he absentmindedly reached for the back of his head and scratched it. Not once stopping the makeout session he was thoroughly engaged in.
Holding in a laugh, you repeated the same action. This time, causing two thick strands on either side of his head to painfully tug in opposite directions.
He yelped, causing the girl to jump in alarm. A grin tugged at your lips.
"Is everything okay?" She asked, wide-eyed as Black winced in pain, "Am I.. am I doing something wrong?"
He assured her that she wasn't, and they continued.
Like a moth to a flame, you thought spitefully, does he ever give up?
Deciding to wrap it up, you lifted all of his hair and yanked it back with such a force that he stumbled backwards into the bookshelf behind him- the same one you were currently hiding on the other side of.
Stifling a giggle, you quickly fled the scene just as the Ravenclaw girl screamed in surprise. The last thing you heard was Madam Pince rushing to investigate and, in a voice that could only be described as one of immense disgust,
"10 points from Gryffindor, Black, for using the library as a place for such.. odious activity."

Thinking about how Jane Austen's six novels taken together (in writing order, not publication order) become an increasingly scathing criticism of social class, i.e:
Northanger Abbey: Individual members of the gentry (General Tilney, chiefly) come in for some criticism, but mostly on a personal level: General Tilney is a grasping, tyrannical father to be sure but we hear little (though we might easily infer) of what he is like as the resident landholder. The final crisis of the novel, General Tilney's refusal to sanction Henry and Catherine's marriage, is resolved by Eleanor's marriage to a Viscount.
Sense and Sensibility: The "correctness" and "elegance" of the fashionable members of society- the Dashwoods, Robert Ferras, Lady Middleton- are negatively contrasted to the warmness and frankness of Mrs Jennings- whose kind-heartedness makes her more attractive, in spite of her lower-class origins and perceived vulgarity, than Fanny, Lady Middleton or Mrs Ferras (snr).
Pride and Prejudice: The aristocratic Lady Catherine de Bourgh is an interfearing busy body whose title and money only excuse her officiousness and rudeness. Darcy's pride in his superior situation to the Bennets leads him to act wrongly with regard to Bingley and Jane. Aunt and Uncle Gardiner, in trade, are more respectable- certainly better parental figures- than the gentleman Mr Bennet (and Mrs Bennet too). At the same time - Darcy's strengths are displayed in his undertakings as the resident landholder of the Pemberly estates- he supports the poor, and his situation allows him to shield the more vulnerable when he his spurred to act (Georgiana, to a less successful extent Lydia). Wickham's circumstances - debt, etc- could easily be read as the consequences of his wanting to step out of his place- his desire to be the oldest, or at least the second, son of a Mr Darcy- rather than what he 'is'- the son of Mr. Darcy's steward
Mansfield Park: Hey. HEY. look at the shitshow of a baronetcy. Lady Bertram is functionally useless. Sir Thomas is such a bad father that his daughters marry idiots just to get away from him. Also, having money can't give you intelligence or a personality. Most of "fashionable society" are actually miserable and mercenary and also probably immoralistic. The Church is clouded by corruption and isn't actively benefiting the local parish the way it should. The whole thing is underpinned by slavery, and the hardworking Price Children are ultimatley more deserving than the flighty Bertram ones. THAT BEING SAID: the portrait of Mr. Price is hardly better than the one of Sir Thomas, and Mansfield Park does stabilise- indeed, begins grows stronger with the reformation of its heir, and the implication that Fanny and Edmund go on to have children of their own. There is less of a quarrel with establishment, and more of a quarrel with the people who fill it.
Emma: "Gentility is inherent one can sense it in a person-" no you can't lmao shut up. There is literally no inherent difference marking out a gentleman's daughter and a farmer's daughter. Emma's snobbery as to class leaves her, at various times, both isolated and into some *serious* missteps. Emma and Frank Churchill both have a tendency to treat others as playthings, as their money allows them to do so.
Persuasion: The peerage/nobility are patently ridiculous throw them out in favour of [relative] meritocracy and hard workers. Sure, the resident landowners are supposed to be of benefit to those beneath them but they're not, actually, they take all of the privileges and fulfil non of the responsibilities and are pretty much uniformly selfish and our heroine Casts Them Off.
