To be the wave

It's just

When I see that you are thirsty

And wanting rain

(In the throes of drought)

To build something that floats

Because here in my pocket

Is a forty day flood

I can make nothing smaller.

Every cup is a sea

Every drop is a wave

And my desire

To quench the dusty voices

Of the faces I call home-

It is a tempest

Untethered

That has left my grasp in the moment of its creation

Just like every other time.

I’ll be forever grateful for the mornings when I would wake up to the curtains opened, the purple clouds splayed across the sky, and the lamppost illuminating a light so bright that it’s warmth reached your heart. 

During those weeks, I slept on the floor so I wouldn’t wake up to an empty bed across from mine. It would have been around 6:46, and although the sadness was bound to be thought of soon enough, that image was able to provide me with stability throughout it all. 

I was not the one who was in the hospital but at times it felt like god gave me my own version of heart disease, and those mornings were my medicine.
