This Week in BL - There's so much airing even I'm struggling to keep up

That's why I'm late.

Aug 2023 Wk 3

Ongoing Series - Thai

Laws of Attraction (Sat iQIYI) 6 of 8 - Oh no. I am totally in love with the escaped young master & his smitten bodyguard. How did that happen? (Be careful P’Thee the broken ones are the most tempting. Tin understands.) NO SINGING! Trust Thai BL to destroy any moment of sentiment I might have by picking up a damn guitar. And we finally get Charn’s Batman villain origin story. Good use of back hug! This is a GREAT show. Melodramatic as fuck, but GREAT. Gotta say this pair in NOT Thailand’s best kissers but not everyone can be Zee++. Still I think that + singing + a touch of overacting is likely to keep this out of the 10/10 club.

Dangerous Romance (Fri YT) ep 1 of 12 - Rich /poor dynamic with characters & set up exactly as expected. Chimon is great. Perth is good too. A real rich-kid bully, Heirs level or Japanese F4 evil. All the teachers are also corrupt (that’s kinda a Thai thing, I think because they can't call out the government). I gotta say, Marc is doing a bang-up job as the jock friend, too. And the kiss twist was fun. All in all, this is good. And you know me, I love a high school BL.

I Feel You Linger in the Air (Sat YT) ep 1 of 12 - The time travel historical romance many of us have been waiting for. Adaption of y-novel by Violet Rain, from the producers of Lovely Writer. Heartbroken architect is transported to the 1930s. Nonkul (actor playing Jom) keeps reminding me of Cho Han Gyeol from Love Mate. It’s a bit slow to start but interesting when it hits its stride. The pacing feels like a Chinese historical (makes me wonder if this with be 4 or 6 act structure). Nonkul is a wonderful actor. They weren’t sharing the screen for long, but the leads seem good together. I’m in.

Only Friends (Sat YT) ep 2 of 10 - Well. It’s entertaining, I'll say that for it. Addiction. Manipulation. Queer as folk & all that jazz. (No jazz for you, Thailand. Oh no! I’m giving them ideas.) I would like it to turn out that Mew is actually manipulating everything. This is his revenge con on Top. Mew is, after all, supposed to be "the smart one." Gotta say, this is darn near perfect casting. But honestly? This show could just be about Ray & Sand. Their story (and them in it) is easily the most riveting. Sand better be careful, the wildly broken ones are always the best in bed, because they don’t care ao they have no shame and that's HOT.

Hidden Agenda (Sun GMMTV YouTube) ep 6 of 10 - I like how soft Joke’s version of seme flirting is. It’s mellow, like his voice gets with Zo. I also liked Zo casually chatting to his friends about how he feels about being flirted with. His friends gave good advice & were supportive. Oh no! A boy in a BL went into the rain ALONE. What ON EARTH will happen next? The argument was interesting, because it gave us insight into Zo’s maturity & ability to handle a relationship. I’ve been wondering why anyone would like him, and now I know. Joke & Nita’s backstory is fun. I like the gay boy protecting the straight girl reverse beard action. On a complete aside, I really like Dunk’s makeup in this series. It’s very Kdrama.

Low Frequency (Sat iQIYI) ep 7 of 8 - The house ghosts trying to help are cute. The plot is at least... a plot? I don’t know. Dias Ex Mafia is a new one on me. (COME ON THAT’S A GREAT PUN, PRAISE ME!) I’m ready for this show to be over.

Be Mine Super Star (Mon Viki) ep 7 of 12 - Honestly, the whole time I’m watching this I’m just thinking I wish JaFirst got better scripts. Speaking of, I don’t object, but these characters sure moved into sex fast. I really don’t quite understand how Daddy & Hot Doc got together so fast either. It feels like their story was meant to be spread out into the other episodes but didn’t get cut in properly, so it ended up all in this one? Or is it just the pacing is particularly bad in this show?

Dinosaur Love (Sun iQIYI) ep 8 of 10 eps - I have no idea what is going on. What are all of Dino’s friends doing? What do they want? what’s their point in the story? I’m even annoyed by Peak, and love him. Sex scene which they tried to make sexy. Operative word being tried. Although, there was some interesting after sex discussion about mechanics. And there was a cute bathtub chat about pet names. But this show is a lotta work for very little pay out.

Wedding Plan (Wed YT & iQIYI) ep 5 of 7 - I like the sunshine sides? PUNCH LOM 2023! Trash watch here!

Love in Translation (Sat iQIYI) ep 1 of 10 - Pushy older bro is Earn from Love Sick, yay! And he’s the hyung of a side couple, which is "best friend’s older brother" trope! My favorite!!!! Have we seen this in BL before? I don't think so. Anyway, DOUBLE YAY! The main couple… eh. You know I loathe stalker characters. And I viscerally HATE this one. Almost as bad as SCOY, not sure I can take it, actually. The squealing of "Tammy!" is worse on my ear than any off-key guitar strumming. I may have to DNF or fast forward through all his parts… but he’s the lead. What to do? I do like the “Chinese” businessman actor. He very cute. (On an aside, I was just reading about commercial real estate as the loophole for foreign property investors in Thailand. Cool plot point.) I’m getting a Taming of the Shrew vibes from this. Just me? For now it's living at the bottom of the list for sheer unadulterated loathing of Phumjai. Not the actor, he was my favorite and only good thing about Our Days. But this character? NO.

Ongoing Series - Not Thai

Jun & Jun (Korea Thur Viki) ep 5 of 8 - This is basically the gay Boys Over Flowers of my heart. Or as close as I think we’ll get from BL. I like both of the 2nd leads, even though I suspect Simon of actually being into everyone’s fav hyung. Cute to see the Mr Heart boys back on my screen, oh so briefly. Such a Taiwan trick, reusing a beloved couple like that. Nice gimmie to the fans. Meanwhile, Choi Jun - boy sure knows his angles but his motives? Please don’t let this be another arranged marriage beard situation? I can’t take 2 in the same month.

Stay By My Side (Taiwan Fri Gaga) ep 8 of 10 - The boyfriends ep! JC is biggest simp spoiling his baby EVER. Taiwan = the sappiest of saps. “Owning the same key” is such a cute way of putting it. Also I love the "knew all along" twist, made me happy. The angst is silly but that's normal in Taiwanese BL.

Love Class Season 2 (Korea Fri Viki) eps 3-4 of 10 - Pair 1: Lee Hyun is such a wide-open, bleeding, no-shame romantic. It’s kinda great. Boy has a poet’s soul & NO artifice. J-Min is startlingly good, very nuanced. I know I keep saying that, but I’m v surprised by his skillz. And… add in creepy stalker, goody. Pair 2: The "other student couple" I’m not into, also NO SINGING. Pair 3: The underwear gift was so fucking funny. “I’m going reap the boxers I sewed” is next level script excellence. These two are brilliant at gayest-of-gay flirt-negging, I'm INTO IT. One of my housemates said, in response to my audible cackling, "You seem to be enjoying your shows extra much tonight."

My Personal Weatherman AKA Taikan Yoho (Japan Sat Gaga) ep 2 of 8 - Oh I love love love them. It’s so old school yaoi and SO JBL. No other country could produce this kind of show. I love this little feminist aspect where the weatherman treats his boy like a 1950s housewife & said boy thinks that makes him an indentured servant. Clocks. But also, the way our weatherman LOOKS at his boy. He is so in love. (It looks like we skip next week for holiday reasons?)

Sing My Crush (Korea Wed iQIYI) eps 5-6 of 8 - It remains enjoyable.

Minato's Laundromat Season 2 AKA Minato Shouji Coin Laundry Season 2 (Japan Thu Gaga) ep 6 of 12 - At least we know Minato actually desires Shin, he just won’t do anything about it. Also, Minato chose the perfect person to come out to. That's nice for him. Finally, Shu & Asuka are glorious. Sides are winning these days.

Stay Still (Hong Kong Tues YouTube) ep 3 of 5 - A proper faen fatal has entered one of our couples. She won too, since she ended up marrying the boy. Still not sure about this show (and it should have convinced me by now). I definitely like the tattoo couple better than the reunion couple. Still, not a lot happened in this episode and this is short series, they don’t have time to waste. It remains intriguing but not... erm... good.

In case you missed it

River Knows Fish Heart is leaving Gaga soon. It's a decent little bully romance Chinese BL (pulp) - yes, you read that right. Actual CBL. Not great, but if you're into the CBL stuff, especially the early stuff, this has some of that tenor only made in 2018 (I have a feeling it was shot in 2017 and skated through). Anygay, just staying. Catch it before it disappears because with CBL once they gone, often, they gone forever.

Friend. Boy Friend a new Thai BL pulp was supposed to start airing on Aug 19th. I can't find it. Neither can MDL.

Next Week Looks Like This:

Everything from Thailand seems to be dropping on Sat & Sun this month. It's a good thing I got quiet weekends for a while. Also the BL firehose is upon us, so much content.

Starting this week:

8/20 (tomorrow) My Universe series (Sun iQIYI) 24 eps - This is sampler pack BL, 12 pairs, each pair gets 2 eps, not sure on the order they’ll drop. Known couples include EarthBank from Destiny Seeker and KaownahTurbo from Love Stage!!!, fresh faces otherwise. Jane to direct.

8/22 Kisseki: Dear to Me formerly known as Miracle (Taiwan Tues Viki & iQIYI) 13 eps - From screenwriter Lin Pei Yu (We Best Love, H3: Trapped) features a student doctor forced to take care of a gangster. I love the premise and like the writer.

8/23 Why R U? (Korean remake iQIYI) 8 eps - I find everything about this hilarious. I mean if Korea remakes it, we lose all the sexy and then... would we have a story at all? No we would not. Not even for 8 short eps. It’d be like one of those mesh shopping bags.

8/24 Man Suang (Thailand movie, domestic cinema release) - historical drama about Thai burlesque with KP’s MileApo.

10. Which alien pet would you most want for your own?

Honestly I have always been very charmed by Worf's childhood pet domesticated targ (portrayed by Russian wild boar Emmy-Lou😂) - but I would happily adopt a Bajoran hara cat, Cardassian vole, or that cute lizard who climbs over Jadzia on the jungle planet

Anyway look at this lil guy!!!

15. Top 3 favorite alien crewmembers?

Oooh, this is tough. Am I choosing my favs overall, or based on how much I like their alien-ness specifically? If it's the former, then Kira, B'Elanna, and Dax - if it's the latter, then Odo, Worf, and Saru (Discovery). (Deanna and Kes leaving you out Hurt Me but they didn't write you alien enough for the latter list!! Still top 5 favs though <3)

35. A minor character you wish had become a main character?

Okay let's talk about the long-form arc potential both Seska and Suder had. Literally my favourite thing about the Suder episodes is the questions about restorative justice they raise- is there any point in locking a man up after he's sincerely reformed and no longer dangerous? Is it possible to be? Is it fair to the victim's loved ones to give him the right to roam around like nothing happened? What sort of thing could count as "reparations" in Voyager's situation? What if they really had been stranded with him for 75 years? Would he ever have been able to move on from what he did? What sort of hobbies might he take up in his new life? What would it take to win Janeway's trust? Would the victim's friends ever forgive him? Would he rather disembark the ship and start anew somewhere, or remain with his own people? Would he have been able to make new friends? Are you reading this string of questions in Jonathan Frakes's voice too? Would our main characters all have been able to get past his actions? Would it cause disagreements? How would his relationship with Tuvok have progressed? What issues would their getting back to Earth early raise for him? ... Aaaaand then the show decided to give us none of that😂 (well. except for Jonathan Frakes in a brief cameo that is :D) As for Seska I really don't know what they were thinking with her lol. She starts off as such a promising villain- literally the "reveal" in 'State of Flux' gives me chills! And you can actually understand her actions, her unexpected attachments to Chakotay and the crew. Instead of the whole pregnancy subplot (which made no sense) I would've loved to have seen her grow increasingly afraid she'd made a mistake in teaming up with the Kazon, and try to defect back to Voyager - the questions that would raise would be similar to Suder's, though in this case a bit more personal for characters like Chakotay and B'Elanna. Is she for real? Is she just doing this to trick them again? How do the Bajoran crew members feel about this? What would it take for her to win back people's trust? Say she does something messed up again, does she get a third chance? Would she make friends with Seven of Nine; someone she never personally betrayed who is also seeking redemption for past actions? Society if we'd gotten her as a regular character all the way till S7 - like an actually great redemption arc, where she ends up on good terms with a lot of them by the end (sort of like what they did with Garak on DS9) - ahhh the possibilities!!!

43. Order of shows from most to least favorite?

This is hard😅 okay I'm going to tier rank them that's easier!

Fav tier: DS9 (It's the best <3) Second tier: TNG (I can't not put it here this show literally changed my life) & VOY (has wonderful characters and has also become very important to me) Third tier: TOS movies (love them), Discovery (I have developed a nostalgia for it by now. Plus Michael is blorbo!) Fourth tier: TOS, SNW, Enterprise, Lower Decks (shows I've enjoyed but only really seen once so far) and I guess the AOS movies lol (imo 'Beyond' is the best one) Fifth tier: Picard (if it was just the first season it would've been higher! I actually liked that one) & the TNG movies (ugh) (I am yet to see TAS and Prodigy)

Natasha Romanoff (comics, she just is overall a million times more complex and intense (and hot) in the comics. And I love her. As you may have guessed.)

Leia Organa, the first ever girlboss (I know I don't exhibit my Star Wars obsession on here much but believe me. She rotates in my mind at least three times a day)

Kamala Khan (My precious precious baby girl princess. I love her in all her forms, in every universe, she is beloved to me and I need y'all to understand this.)

Nakia (So goddamn underutilised in fandom and fanfiction oh my god. This woman is a Wakandan spy how is that not the coolest thing ever? Not to mention she's godsendingly gorgeous)

Morgana Pendragon (What? She's so evil and pretty. I want to sit on her lap like a Bond villain's cat. Also I am obsessed with how mad she went. How much of an insane little freak she is. 11/10)

Daisy from AOS (God, I need to write some fics about her. She is so traumatized I need to crack her open like a hazelnut.)

Valka from HTTYD (Dragon MILF. Need I say more?)

Mulan (Again, girlboss. Genderbending ICON. Best friend is a lizard.)

Dana Scully (Gillian Anderson? Yes, yes, 100 times yes. Once again, girlboss. And she's always so put together...)

Tess Servopoulos (Couldn't leave out my new obsession :) There's so much potential here for some exploration into the morally grey. And I mean...Anna Torv absolutely rocks that grunge survival look. Yum.)

#this was so fun #the only MCU I really actually like are Black Widow; Ms Marvel; the Black Panther Movies; CA:TWS; Captain Marvel and I guess Iron Man 1 #so there's not as much Marvel in there as there could have been #m answers #anon cuties #oh Misty Knight should definitely be up there though #and Mystique #anyway #it's like I jammed my lever and cocaine just kept pouring out #m talk!

Boy: Our origin story was stupid, but we've been inseperable for years now. We live on Discord together, talk about everything, watch dumb internet stuff together. He's a good bean <3

WvW: I got involved in WvW in early 2013 when it was needed for map completion. A friend had gone through the same process but ended up staying and was like "Dude. This game mode is AMAZING" And yeah. I love WvW. I've met amazing people and spent many many hours doing hilarious things. WvW is some serious fun.

My characters: Before the game was even out I had backstories and character designs, and this has never stopped. An intricate world for my Commander and gang. Game gets called Fashion Wars for a reason, and the cosmetics in this game and the systems implented to facilitate this are my favourite across the genre.

Community: Tumblr and Discord especially. The Tumblr community has a whole ecosystem of smaller communities and people who interact and if you look hard enough and put yourself out there, you will find your people. Similarly, shout out to the GW2 Discord. Some of the friendliest, funniest people out there who are also incredibly knowledgable about the game. I'm involved in adminning the discord, and I also help moderate the subreddit and I've met some amazing people there I will gladly call friends. From talking about actual game stuff with the lore people, to sharing pretty things with the screenshot/fashion people, helping countless newbies and other players with questions, or just hanging out talking about random semi-maybe-gw2-related-possibly things in general chat. The Discord people are the best.

My guilds: Blinkie Ponie Armie [BPA], Celestial Order of the Bow [COtB], Army of Shepherds [AoS], Vindicated Honor [vH], Strike Force [SF], Born Villains [Cain], Celestial Order [CO], Crow's Nest [Crow]

(I think that's all of them) From bringing the Blinkie Ponie Armie from GW1 into GW2, to a brief "omg I'm being social with PvE people" foray into The Crow's Nest, I've loved the guilds I've been in in GW2. AoS, vH, SF, Cain all being WvW guilds, and CO was Cain rebranded when I got control of it. It became an odd little haven when a lot of my friends and I fell out with a guild. The ending there was sour, but I still have a lot of good memories. People come and go, guilds come and go, but the good times last forever.

Thank you, Guild Wars and ArenaNet for an amazing 10 years. On to the next ten!

a complex female lead who is allowed to be her own person and is allowed to have so many conflicting characteristics, who is allowed to take up space and say i'm here, who is allowed to kick ass and fall in love, who is allowed to laugh and cry and chew with her mouth open. how many characters like peggy carter do we have in media? damn few

actually, ALL the characters are such fucked-up people who are still trying so hard to do good... or have given up completely... or never tried in the first place... or can't figure out what good is anymore... and i love them all so much. except masters. masters can die in a ditch

the platonic and romantic dynamics are so variable from each other and so layered and messy and beautiful. it's such a love letter to, well, love

adding on to that, the villains in both seasons are only defeated because a group of rag-tag, often antagonistic, severely damaged people are able to put aside their differences, see each other for who they are, and work together. when marvel does this well (other examples include aos and guardians, and i'd argue even hawkeye to an extent) they do it SO well. it's a shame they forgot how this trope worked for the avengers

it's such an intriguing mix of genres. it's a sci-fi noir period action espionage war drama that also somehow fits in buddy cop comedy and rom-com. and it somehow works

the interrogation scene gets its own bullet point

it deals with societal trauma in a really effective way. all of the war veterans in the show, and even the civilians, are all clearly permanently affected by the past four to six years depending on the country of origin in really different ways. and none of these ways are treated as invalid, not even jack's ptsd, which could fall into so many cliches (especially since he's meant to be kind of an asshole anyway) but doesn't. ac pretty much single-handedly got me through the start of the pandemic because it was so reassuring to see these people grapple with a similarly globally traumatizing scenario in which they underwent catastrophic loss and still make it through

it is SO fucking funny. PEAK comedy

the FORTIES AESTHETIC, Y'ALL. the WARDROBES. the SET DESIGN. the SOUNDTRACK. god the forties were such a fucked-up time for so many reasons but they nailed the aesthetic

Final part of my top 100 favorite characters

10 – Percy Jackson

A books series I loved as a preteen, and I loved the main character. It’s been a while since I read, so it’s not so easy to organize my toughts and feelings about the character to tellwhat I loved about him, but maybe I’ll do it in the future

9 – Nie Huaisang (Mo Dao Zu Shi)

If I remeber correctly, the very first thing WWX told us about NHS in the novel was that he was inteligente/wasn’t stupid (it was a scene where someone was telling WWX about the repuation of the Sect Leader Nie as the Headshaker, so WWX’s inner monologue was a response to that). Then, in WWX’s memories of Cloud Recess, we see NHS plotting to cheat in the exams and convincing WWX of doing the work for him. One of the very few changes/additions in the live action I actually liked was that scene where he and WWX first met and he talks about how he captured that bird. The reveal in the ending wasn’t really obvious or expected, at least not to me, but it’s not like it came from nowhere either. Teenage NHS already had some of the personality traits that would be “revealed” later on, but not the motivation of doing anything great with this.

8 – Tomie

From the works of Junji Ito. I find her fascinating as a character and as a concept. First of all, she is a chaotic villain, is simply entertaining to read about her, so I woud like the character even if it didn’t go any further. But there’s something deeper that fascinates me about her, that I won’t go into Much detail now, because I intend to write a separated post with my Tomie essay. But there’s something about how the stories lay out and how inevitable it Always feels, not Only to Tomie’s victims, but to Tomie herself.

7 - Sans (Undertale)

This character got a bad reputation due to horny fans in the peak of the game’s popularity. Even so, I love him in the game. The mistery, his personality, his judgments. I love howthe reason why the possibly most powerful character in the game has a painfully beliavable reason to not act in his full potential. How pointless everything seems to him, how hopeless he must feel. That “just give up. I did” line in the pacifista route. And also his monologue in the genocide route battle about the player’s motivation to keep playing the genocide route “...because you think you ca. And because you ‘can’, you ‘have to’”

6 – Sal Fisher (Sally Face)

I loved this game and Episode Four broke me. Sal was such a likeable character, he Always made my heart warm, and his friendhip with Larry was so sweet.

5 – Luo Qingyang (Mo Dao Zu Shi)

One of the things that annoy me the most about the live action i show they LQY so Much she could as well be an original character. She was such a great character in the novel, despite having so few scenes. I already made a post about how she was a narrative parallel to WWX and WJL. She was amazing and had one of the better endings/lifes in the story. Good for her.

4 - Lelouch Lamperouge/Lelouch vi Britannia (Code Geass)

My personal history of problematic faves goes far. I remember how many nights I spent comparing him to Light Yagami, trying to understand why I loved Lelouch so Much while I hated Light so much When both characters are so similar. And I remeber how frustrating it was to try to find someone analysing/comparing this characters, because I could Only find debates about who’s smarter, wich is not importante. Was Lelouch right? Did he had the right to do the things he did? Not really, but he had a better understanding of humanity than Light, and actually tough about the causes ofthe violence, instead of only repressing the symptons. He was an interesting character with a lot of emotion.

3 – Okumura Rin (Ao no Exorcist)

He was impulsive and sounded rude a lot of times, but had a kind heart, despite his tendency to violence. That’s one thing I find interesting about him, that fans often overlooked, is that he wasn’t naturally kind, he learned to be kind, and it wasn’t easy. It’s not because he had a good nature, it’s because he putted the effort on that, and he did so because his father believed he could. He actually told little Rin that if he tred hard to be kind to people, he would become kind. I just love that scene of small Rin being vioent and believing he coudn’t be good and his father saying this. It’s surprinsigly rare to fiction tell us that we’re not doomed to be bad people just because being nice doesn’t come naturally to us.

2 – Original Shen Qingqiu/Shen Jiu (Scum Villain Self Saving System)

A very tragic and complex character, undeniably my favorite svsss character, and it’s not because I have anything against SY

1 – Wei Wuxian (Mo Dao Zu Shi)

Am I confidente to say that WWX is my favorite character from all times? Yes, absolutely. I love him so much, I don’t even know how to exlain how much I love him. I’m so glad he got his happy ending, he deserved it.

1. Seasons

The season that I believe to be the best made and the best well-done is season 4. Most of the characters were great. The storylines were phenomenal (my favorite being the Framework), and it gave us one of the best minor characters (Robbie Reyes!!) and one of the best villains (Aida) in the show.

That being said, the season I find myself rewatching the most is season 7 with season 1 close behind. Season 7, in my opinion, did so many amazing things, and though I have my own complaints about it, it was a great final season of the show. It also gave us Daniel Sousa back and Dousy. Season 1 just makes me feel nostalgic (despite the fact that I started the show in January 2020), and there is just this light-heartedness to the show before it got dark.

Also want to throw season 2 out there as well. The character development we see in Daisy in the season as a whole is so amazing. We get to see her discover her heritage and watch the transition from Skye to Daisy. Being half-Asian, watching Daisy discover herself means so much to me.

2. Major Characters

DAISY JOHNSON!! (I mean are you really surprised lol). After her, it would be Melinda May followed by Mack.

10. Headcanons

- One of Jiaying's parents had quake powers (I headcanon it being her father, but @stilltryingtowrite wrote about it being her mother, and I love that just as much)

- Elena and Daisy totally watch One Day at a Time together.

- If/When the team has kids, Dousy's kid or youngest kid (if they have multiple) is a girl, and she's basically the baby of all the kids, and the kids all view her like a little sister the same way the rest of the team views Daisy

- Daisy sings in the shower

- May has everyone's birthday's memorized and she leaves them gifts in their bunks the morning of their bday

- Daisy is almost as bad as a cook as May; however, the team still trusts her slightly more than May in the kitchen (only slightly)

Those are just a few I could think of off the top of my head at the moment😅

Are there any new/ less well- known rarepair+ writers in the fandom you could recommend?

Hey, nonnie. I haven’t been around that much, so I don’t know if I am the best person to ask about this, but I will try to answer to the best of my abilities.

I never want to start a post about rarepairs without mentioning Al- @bobbimorseisbisexual (AO3). Now, I believe at least 99% of rarepairs writers don’t get as much attention as they deserve, so everyone could qualify in the “less known” category. But maybe including Al there is not fair since their passion and interest in rarepairs is well-known across fandom. Nonetheless, I believe they have done so much in benefit of rarepairs in the AOS fandom in general that I don’t want to go without mentioning them whenever this topic is brought up.

Now, it depends a lot on which rarepairs are you looking for! Scies&Spies [Fitz/Simmons/Bobbi/Hunter] has been on the rise for a while (and consequently, the same has happened to at least some of their two-people and three-people combinations), so you can find a lot of fairly new content for them in AO3. I don’t particularly read for them (except Fitzhunter and sometimes Fitzbobbi and BioHunter), but a lot of my friends write for them and I can wholeheartedly rec all of them!

If you are more into the f/f side of things, Aubrey (@loved-the-stars-too-fondly - AO3) is always a great way to go that doesn’t get near as enough attention as she deserves. Her Maydaisy is my weakness, but she also has a lot of great Maybobbi and some Skimmorse I really enjoyed.

If you prefer villains, you can’t go wrong with Lou (@apathbacktoyou - AO3). She plays a lot with different combinations and I am sure she must have something for everyone’s taste!

In my preferred side of things, Nadja (@ready-to-kick-some-ass - AO3) has a lot of wonderful Fitzhunter stories! And, of course, always, Blue (@smallblueandloud - AO3) standing the ground in the Fitzskimmons fandom, being better than what we deserve.

Also, I don’t know if the show ending has allowed people to feel like they have permission to play more or what, but a lot of people who have been creators for this fandom for a long time have started trying new ships and I think that is wonderful! From the top of my mind, I can mention Libby (@libbyweasley - AO3) and Tomato (@tomatobookworm - AO3) but I apologize in advance because I know I must be forgetting a lot of people!

I have two pieces of closing advice for everyone who ships a rarepair. One, follow the tags of the ships you are interested in AO3. Every once in awhile someone new appears and it’s always a joy. Two, always support your fandom creators but, please, try a bit harder with rarepairs content creators. Only 1% of readers commenting in a fic for a big ship might still mean 10 or more comments a fic gets, but for smaller ships that might mean the only comment an author uses to fuel themselves to keep writing.

I was planning on doing @bunnykaye‘s 30-Day AoS Challenge from the beginning, but life got in the way, so now I’m playing catch up.

Day 1 - Favorite Season

Season Four, all the way. Loved Robbie, loved Aida and Radcliffe, the LMDs, the Framework. All of it was just amazing.

Day 2 - Favorite Episode

Self Control (4x15). What a directorial debut of Jed Whedon! Acting, fight scenes, VFX, everything was top notch.

Day 3 - Favorite Storyline

The entire Uprising Arc (1x17 - 1x22). That was when stuff got serious and AoS went from kinda case of the week to going full on spy show. And that’s when we found out Ward was HYDRA.

Day 4 - Favorite Male Character

Trip. I know, probably a weird choice when he was only around for like a season, but I loved him. His optimism and sense of humor was great. Daisy said in 2x11 that “we’re gonna laugh a lot less, that’s for sure” and she was right.

Day 5 - Favorite Female Character

May and Daisy. I can’t pick who I love more. Preference varies on which episode I’m watching, but those two are always my favorite.

Day 6 - Favorite Friendship

May and Daisy again. They’re my two favorite characters and I just love their dynamic so much.

Day 7 - Favorite Ship

Philinda. I mean, how can you beat a kiss behind a holographic shield?

Day 8 - Favorite Non-Canon Ship

SkyeTrip or QuakeRider. I love SkyeTrip because they seem to lift each other’s spirits by being around each other and QuakeRider because they made an amazing team fighting bad guys.

Day 9 - Favorite Guest Star

Peggy Carter. She was great in the two episodes she was in and I hope we see her again in season 7.

Day 10 - Favorite Recurring Character

Obviously, I loved Trip. Cal was also so fun to see (Kyle MacLachlan is an amazing actor). Robin is amazing as well.

Day 11 - Favorite Villain

I know I keep giving two answers for stuff, but I really am torn between Aida and Hive.

I loved Hive because of how calm and composed he was, how he seemed to be planning five steps ahead from everyone else. And the death scene! You rarely see a villain simply admit defeat and just talk with the heroes before they both die. It was pretty awesome to see.

Aida was just so different. All she really wanted was to be human so she could feel human emotions. And then she quickly realized that human emotions can really suck sometimes.

Day 12 - Funniest Character

Lance “Amadeus Ravenclaw” Hunter. Always loved his quips and sense of humor. It was so fun to see him come back for Rewind (5x05).

Day 13 - Character You Wish Would Return

Oh, that’s a tough one. If I had to pick one, I would have to say Cal. Said it before and will say it again: he’s just so fun to watch!

Day 14 - Underrated Character

Mack. I just feel like he’s that character most people like, but isn’t in most people’s top five or whatever. For me, he comes super close to Trip for favorite guy characters. Mack needs more love.

Day 15 and onward shall be in their own separate (and longer) posts. Glad to be able to join in on this!

Now that I’ve had time to think about it, here are my ratings for each season of Agents of SHIELD:

Season 1: 6/10

I mean, this one is fairly obvious. The first two-thirds of the season was a mediocre, monster-of-the-week type show that didn’t seem to have any stakes. If it hadn’t been for the HYDRA twist, the score would’ve been 4/10, that’s how uninteresting the first season was.

Season 2: 8/10

Massive improvement. I still maintain that Jiaying is one of the show’s better villains and I loved how, as a whole, the season worked as Daisy’s superhero origin story. I also liked that Grant Ward got a villain arc that didn’t reward him in the end.

The show still had its flaws but there was definitely forward progress with this season.

Season 3: 4/10

I’ll just come out and say it...I despised this season. Nothing about this season worked for me; Grant Ward’s arc in the first half of the season, using Jemma’s Maveth survival episode as the basis for a stupid love triangle instead of making her character arc about her, the forced Phil Coulson anti-hero arc, making Lincoln Campbell the emotional lynch-pin of the season, how Lash’s character was handled, the forced removal of Bobbi and Hunter from the show, centering the second half of the season on a “who’s gonna die” plot...I hated all of it.

I would’ve gone with a lower score but I did like the season finale and Yo-Yo’s inclusion.

Season 4: 9/10

Coming off of season 3, I was ready to drop the show like a hot potato. However, that’s when Marvel announced they’d be introducing the Ghost Rider this season. Since Ghost Rider is my 2nd favorite Marvel character, I was compelled to come back, even though my expectations were bedrock level. And I’m really glad I stayed since the writing somehow magically improved with this season. Unlike season 3, everything about season 4 worked for me; Robbie Reyes as a whole, Fitz turning out to be a LMD, Daisy’s anti-hero arc, AIDA as the main villain of the season, Holden Radcliffe as the tragic secondary villain, Coulson and May moving closer to a romantic relationship, the entire Framework arc, the episode Self-Control, Jeffrey Mace’s tragic arc...masterpiece.

I would honestly rate AOS season 4 among the greatest seasons of superhero TV. It’s up there with Daredevil seasons 1 and 3, Flash season 1, and Arrow season 2.

Season 5: 7/10

This season was great too, but definitely not as good as season 4. Which is fine, season 4 is hard to top. I’ll say that my biggest problem of season 5 was the pacing. The first half flowed okay but the second half of the season seemed to drag. Maybe it was because of the Fear Dimension subplot or spending screentime on Ruby Hale that should’ve gone to Glenn Talbot. Either way, great season but flawed.

Season 6: 6/10

This was definitely a weird season. There were a lot of good ideas but I think the problem was that the season felt incomplete/unpolished. Like, I never really got attached to Sarge as a character and Izel’s character, being the season’s main villain, was not really fleshed out. Also, I felt the season was unfocused with the story switching between the search for Fitz arc and the Sarge on Earth arc. Maybe with more time, the show could’ve expanded on all of the season’s elements and make everything feel more coherent but they did what they could with 13 episodes.

Season 7: 6.5/10

Decent ending season, but it felt more like a victory lap than an actual compelling season of AOS. The main villains were lacking and the season was more focused on celebrating the history of the show rather than trying to build up the threats that the team was facing.

Also, the more I thought about it, the more I realized that I had problems with the narrative choices in this season. Kora was a character who was introduced way too late into the show. Bringing back Daniel Sousa just to hook him up with Daisy kinda rubbed me the wrong way (I’m fine with her ending up with someone but, like Kora, he was introduced way too late into the show. I would’ve liked the romance more had we seen Sousa in the previous seasons, instead of rushing the romance in the last one). Leo Fitz only showing up in the last 3 episodes really put a damper on the story as a whole.

But overall, the show ended fine. Flawed, yes, but it is what it is.

So I don’t want to get into a huge retrospective of how 2020 was for me, because it’s personal and I think we can all agree things have been bad. So instead I’d like to talk about great video games I got into in 2020!!! These games didn’t necessarily come out in 2020 just things I discovered and I’d like to talk about my top 10 faves

1. The first best video game I discovered in 2020 is the entire Trails Series (I played all of them in 2020, cold steel, ao, zero, and Sky). Initially I played Cold Steel 1 because my friend told me it was like “Playing Code Geass the anime”. The story was pretty easy to get into of a guy going to military school and you’re placed in the special class for commoners and nobles when there’s a huge class divide in your country. From there it had some basic anime tropes like a dating simulator like thing and various cliched characters, like the tsundere, the guy who’s trying to get everybody to work, the music kid, and the noble, you know?

But Cold Steel wasn’t cliché in the least bit. I played it after surgery recovery so I was in a lot of pain and out of my mind, but each character had depth, the entire world was fleshed out and after each game more of the story and the villains were revealed, secret robot technologies were given to the main characters and they slowly became more and more powerful after that.

I wanted to know more and more about the world so I played the first series trails in the sky and the Japanese only series, Zero and Ao, and they were even better. Not only that but in this JRPG there were canon gay characters that had traits to their character besides “I’m gay.” There were a lot of lesbians for me to pick and choose between as faves.

Not only that but I find none dating sim video games difficult cuz I get easily frustrated and rage quit. Cold Steel was turn based combat and never made me feel like rage quitting because they had a function called “Retry but easier” where if you died you could start the same battle but make it easier. That made it so I only had to die five or so times on things I was really stuck on and then I could move on with the story. And the game never felt like a grind fest and I could make the game faster in combat.

This series I may have discovered in 2020 but it’s become just as beloved to me as any other series. It’s one of my faves.

2. My second favorite game in 2020 was 13 sentinels : Aegis Rim. I love time travel so much and everytime a new time travel anime or game comes out I get super excited. Aegis Rim was a game that had all sorts of cool tropes, like time travel, memory loss, androids, different realities, and psychic dreams and it just sounded cool. Not only that but there were 13 different protagonists to play and I had seen it reviewed in LGBT+ articles, saying it had a canon gay character and a canon nonbinary character! It was a very fun game and part of the story followed a point and click formula and the other half followed a kinda strategy blowing up giant robot monsters formula, and I enjoyed it. Also the music and the art was amazing.

3. The House in Fata Morgana was my third favorite game I discovered in 2020!!! It was a visual novel I had gotten in 2019 but never started because “They didn’t have anime eyes so IDK if it’ll be interesting.” I had seen a lot of horror visual novel people review it though with stellar reviews. I ended up playing it when I was sick and man was it an amazing story. It gave me a lot of respect for people who write short stories that wrap up nicely, and a lot of the characters were flawed but I really enjoyed reading their stories. The story was pretty basic in the beginning of a maid telling you several different stories of the previous owners of the mansion she worked in, and the tragedies that befell them throughout her time there, and I really liked the sort of tragedy feel. One of the stories reminded me of Greek tragedies like Oedipus, and as the story got deeper and deeper and connected plot threads of the previous owners it became very cool. Also the game was very LGBT+ friendly with trans and bi characters and possibly an aro character too???

4. Hades was my fourth favorite game in 2020!!! A lot of people have already talked about Hades before and what it’s about but I’d like to talk about why I liked it. As mentioned before I have a problem with video games that rely on skill. I get so frustrated that I either start yelling or crying because I don’t believe that the muscle memory will ever get into me or that I’ll ever be good enough to get past the hard part. It’s incredibly distressing and it makes me feel bad because I’m like “why can’t I do a simple thing other people can easily do?” Hades is one of the few games that taught me that eventually I will succeed, and the muscle memory will come to me. As you probably know Hades has god mode which increases your damage resistance every time you loose. I got to the max god mode very quickly of 80% and for about 10 runs even that wasn’t enough to beat the first boss and I was incredibly frustrated. I was like “they should have raised it to 90% cuz if even their worst players couldn’t beat the boss on easy mode then they’re missing out.” But as people have probably told you, Hades rewards failure. Each run you learn a bit more and get better skills and friendships with people due to grinding. And eventually I stuck to it and beat the first boss, and then all the other bosses. The muscle memory finally hit and I beat Hades and got the true ending and I’m really glad the developers made it accessible enough that even the worst players could beat it and I’m glad they rewarded failure.

5. My next favorite is Chaos;Child, which wasn’t made in 2020, but I did discover it in 2020. It’s another horror visual novel but by the people who did Steins;Gate. I absolutely adore Steins;Gate because of the time travel so I was curious about the other games in the series. Everyone said Chaos;Child was the murder mystery of what Steins;Gate did to time travel and they were right. It was a psychic murder mystery story and although it was very gorey it was very fun and I really liked the characters

6. Sixth favorite was Café Enchante a new otome dating sim released in 2020! You run a coffeshop for monsters basically and I adored it!!! I was a little worried before I got it that it would be boring because what kind of plot can you make in a coffeeshop? But it was very cute and I loved the monsters and the lore. Despite my misunderstanding the entire game did not take place in the coffeeshop and instead went into various monster worlds and expanded on the lore of each world in each route. The art was wonderful and I just love fake monster lore about Fae and beasts and angels and stuff and it was just a wonderful game and is one of my new fave otome titles.

7. I played Ai: the somnium files in 2020! I knew it would be a favorite of the year because it was made by the same people who did the zero escape series. It had a very different tone of the zero escape series of course, instead of being about psychics it’s about the inner workings of the mind. You play a detective going into people’s psyche’s to try to catch a murderer basically. It reminded me a lot of ID;invaded an anime that I think came out this year? Anyway it was a cool story and I liked the graphics but I did not like the timed missions. Without a guide I would have died.

8. The dark horse of 2020 was Untitled Goose Game. I did not expect to get it but my friend gifted to me and I hadn’t played it yet. And as everyone can tell you it’s just a fun time harassing people as a goose. It has 2 player mode so my sister and I played it together and it was great. I liked feeling like grand theft robbers and saying “BOOK IT” as we stole people’s stuff.

9. My ninth favorite game I played in 2020 was Little Busters! It’s by the same people who did Clannad so I knew I would be crying by the end. Clannad’s team is known for their great story telling and heart wrenching characters. It’s about a team of friends who start a baseball team and then it gets sad and time loop-y from there. I played Clannad too in 2020 but it was a little too homophobic for me to let it make it to this list and I don’t remember any homophobia in little busters, so little busters gets its spot.

10. Finally we get to Persona 5 Royal. I didn’t play much of the original persona 5 besides at my friends apartment so I was able to finally have a copy of this game on my own!!! I loved the idea of going into mean people’s minds and changing their hearts so they could understand the wrong that they did, it was just a good concept. I also loved that Persona 5 royal added a safety mode so you can loose and yet not die. It was a great game of 2020 and it only makes it so low because I spent way too many hours on it (135) and it was a great amazing game that I loved and enjoy talking about but would not replay because it’s just so long and I’m not quite sure what would be different on replay. Also I’m sad that you can’t date the boys because I love them. They are good beans. Either way though I’d recommend it if you haven’t played before and it was very fun, and still one of the best games of 2020.

according to spotify, my top song of all time by far is gods menu by stray kids (and when i say by far i mean my first day listening to it was also had my 100th play, not including times i streamed it on yt) but ALSO according to spotify my most listened to song in the last 4 weeks has been love taste by moe shop. do with that what u will 🤷‍♀️

11 - favorite and least favorite song from a movie?

tbh there is very few movies i like enough to actually remember their track list and the ones i do i also like the music for ao this is a hard question. that being said, i rewatched donnie darko recently and ive had the killing moon by echo & the bunnymen stuck in my since so ig that's a favorite? as for least favorite, i have no fuckn clue tbh lmao sry

12 - what are some songs on a playlist ive made and what is the playlist called?

i have a playlist called "dream smp type beat" that has a bunch of songs that remind me of the plot, characters, etc. and it's pretty sexy. i havent unprivated it yet cause im still working on it, otherwise id link it lmao but heres some songs i think im kinda big brain for adding:

a mask of my own face by lemon demon (c!schlatt core)

paradise by the neighbourhood (general plot vibes but theres a few specific lines that remind me of wilbur and dream)

brutus by the buttress (niki villain arc type shit but also could go for some other characters)

saint bernard by lincoln (THIS IS ABOUT SCHLATT AND WILBUR. "there's really just one thing that we have in common: neither of us will be missed" gets me every fucking time)
