A scene that I really liked from a recent D&D game with @heybiji. Dande (drow warlock) found a poem that Lafavel (half elf paladin) wrote about him. Tee hee.
Poem down here:
Tumblr media
You cast your spell, a strong defense To protect you from my wicked ignorance Poison and vile ideas filled my head Since childhood, with them I had been fed
You charm and enchant to placate my rage You quell my violence, I sheath my sword and disengage You use your words to comfort and soothe me Without realizing your ploy, I fell for you truly
And now that the enchantment has ended And you have broken what can never be mended I look at myself, at the things I once believed Of that vile and poison I have been relieved
Though your bonds have been broken and you discarded each chain Though given a chance to leave, by your side I remain Even if your words had all been lies Even if you see my decision as unwise
I want to protect you from the countless others who drink of that poison To keep you company from the loneliness that you are enclosed in And while our previous charade has come to a bitter end My heart yearns to once again call you my friend

February DND Doodles:
The party took a short rest after stripping and tying up the vampire larper for fear he'd be able to use his wizardly magic to get away (it went way better than we thought???)
Clover (halfling) getting up on Norra (half-orc) so she could talk to people without them bending down
Dagger volunteers to finish the watch after abruptly being woken up mid-rest because our part warlock forgot that he has a geass on him
Dagger being moody and sleepy finishing the watch
Solias, Lafavel and Dagger attempt to solve a door puzzle
Solias decides to fly over a trap but is disappointed that he didn't get to carry one of the halflings over and is instead stuck with Dande
Clover saw/guessed Norra the druid wild-shape into a spider so she threw her towards the flying Solias (Dande ended up catching her because who would actually catch a spider??? Also, he didn't see her wild-shape either so it was very wtf)
Lafavel accidedntally ended up near the end of initiative in battle but blocked the entrance to the room with the baddies so everyone had to work around him to fight
Solias got swarmed by centipedes
Dande got knocked out by a dwarf-mummy backwards into an open coffin. Poetic.

After reading about the rules for the White Treehollow again, I decided to clear all the floors. I already beat the first 5 when I was a kid. So, I only had another 5 to comb through before I could face Benga.
The floors were pretty easy to go through. All it took was some deductive reasoning and knowledge. (As well as a bit of strategy.)
After a few days, I finally made it to Benga. Even with two Pokémon against three, I was able to beat him and clear the gauntlet.
Tumblr media
And what was my reward for completing this challenge?
Tumblr media Tumblr media
A bit of a letdown after finally beating this thing...
Thankfully, Benga promised to give me something better.
Tumblr media
So, I went back to Alder's place in Flocessy Town to see what he was talking about.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
I've read about being able to get a shiny Dratini in this game. And now, I've finally got mine! It's a shame that I didn't get a Gible, though. But that would mean that I'd have to play Black Version 2. So, Dratini it is!
Now that I've cleared the White Treehollow, I should go back to fighting on the Battle Trains.

Have You Read...
Tumblr media
The animal citizens of Treehollow have discovered a small, strange creature wandering alone in the forest: a human child! And they have no idea what it is. Clearly much too young to be on her own, it’s anyone’s guess how this mysterious being, named Tamberlane, ended up in their town of Treehollow.
Fostered by Belfry, the accident-prone bat, and guided by a colorful cast of animal characters, Tamberlane’s mysteries continue to unfold. But questions burn in everyone’s minds: who, and what, is she? And could she have something to do with the far-off and unspeakable taboo, Abroad? An emotionally complex story, Tamberlane is also dedicated to featuring queer characters having adventures that have nothing whatsoever to do with the trials and tribulations of their identity.

Mont Blanc
cw: fluff, Valentine's fic,
pairing: Emmet/Reader
summary: You plan too late for the holiday. Attempts to mend it fail... Or do they?
-----
You pouted to yourself as you remained deep in thought. The train around you was packed full. People had quiet and loud conversations with one another as you all rode back toward Nimbasa. You had gone out of town for the day to a certain acclaimed location in Striaton. There was a restaurant there that was said to have some of the best pastries in all of Unova. It was a prime spot for the upcoming holiday, naturally.
Valentine's Day. A lover's holiday.
Your lover was a massive fan of sweets, so naturally a location like that was high on your radar of date ideas. It was only narrowly followed by a trip to the Anville rail yard or a thrilling battling event in the White Treehollow. The more intimate feeling of a restaurant date called to you more, but when you tried to make reservations, they were completely filled. Even attempting to order a dessert would set you out past the date. The blue-haired man explaining all of this apologised to you, but there was little to help improve your mood. He had explained people start reserving three months ahead for holidays like this, which annoyed you.
You crossed your legs and glared out the train window at the concrete tunnels outside. Even your current situation made your mood worse. As if wanting to add on to your sour mood, someone backed away suddenly and accidentally hit you in the face. Both annoyance and hurt bubbled up into your chest. You were about to go off on the person for not being more alert. Before you could, however, your name was called out.
Through the crowd of people, a familiar white hat entered your vision. Emmet stood among the crowd, clearly heading up to the locomotive after investigating something. His head tilted at the sight of you. It was clear he was curious about why were you on the train but was acutely aware this was no place to have a conversation. His hand grasped yours warmly as he guided you through the mass of people and into car after car until you entered on desolate of people, barring a few Depot Agents. Both stiffened at Emmet's return. He just gave them one of his usual smiles.
It was probably a bit cruel to laugh at their nervous demeanours, knowing fully well how threatening Emmet could be, but you could not help giggling at them. They watched as he easily walked to the controls and checked on the one driving. You leaned against the wall. One of the newer Depot Agents squinted his eyes at you and gazed around the room. “Um – Mr. Emmet? Is this the person who was apparently trying to battle in the crowded car?” he called out to his superior. Emmet turned to him with an odd look in his eyes.
“Hmm? No!” he replied with another tilt of his head, “They are my partner!” The poor man's eyes went wide as he turned to look at you once more. You gave a laugh at them again, while the Depot Agent beside him hung his head and took off his hat with a sigh.
A sigh left you as you stared at the Subway Boss. It was cute seeing him working with more inexperienced workers to make sure they understood what they were doing, but it reminded you of your failure that you had just faced beforehand. Emmet would have loved to try their Valentine's exclusive Mont Blanc with a tinge of strawberry to mix with the chestnut paste. You could already see him holding up his spoon with an eager grin and bright eyes. It felt like a terrible situation. Sure, there were other places in Unova, especially within the sheer population density areas like Nimbasa and Castelia, but nothing felt quite comparable to what Striaton had to offer.
When Emmet had finally finished with the driver, he stepped towards you with a sweet grin. “Where did you go?” the younger twin asked quietly, “I do not see you come from this part of Unova often.” You felt mortified. Should you tell him about your failed date plans? Could you lie to him? He was not at all a fan of lies, often leading to you joking about him being the embodiment of Reshiram. It still felt embarrassing to tell him the real reason. You doubted he would care that much.
“I wanted to visit the Dreamyard to see a Munna,” you told him, “… I did not appreciate how tired they made me.” You gave a yawn. He laughed.
“Mmm… It is… Not the best pokemon if you are not prepared,” Emmet agreed, “I am sorry for the crowd.” You shook your head. That was hardly his fault.
Well, you decided, there was now another search for a restaurant that could be a place for Emmet to adore.
~
Time passed on, and while you may have been a month a head, it proved that many people were smart with reserving and acted before you even thought to. It was embarrassing, once more. You wanted to just bawl your eyes out with how difficult it had been to get a reservation. Everywhere seemed packed. Even those from foreign regions were taking romantic getaways to Unova and snatching up reservations. You sat across from the black-haired model at the restaurant, desperately. If anyone had a chance to help you, it was Elesa.
Her azure eyes peered into you as you regaled your tale. She twirled a loose strand of hair as she hummed. Her Emolga flew around her apartment curiously. “Yeah, things get crazy around here with holidays,” she nodded, “I really doubt even I could find anything.” You felt your heart slowly dying. At this rate, you were about to plead to Emmet's brother for help with cooking and attempting your own romantic evening in (despite it not being what you would have preferred to do).
“I wish I had thought ahead,” you lamented, “I feel like I ruined everything.” Elesa shook her head and reached a hand across the table to grasp yours.
“C'mon, I can assure you totally did not,” she gave you a sweet grin, “Em will be happy to do anything with you.” You knew that was not an incorrect statement, but it stung when you still wished to do even more with him. He was your boyfriend and someone who rarely got a proper break. It only felt right to spend a holiday like this out together doing something you each enjoy. You gazed at the woman across from you desperately. Her eyes sparkled with something you could not pinpoint.
“I just… I just wanted to make him happy with a surprise, you know,” you admit to her, “He does so much to make me happy and is one of the sweetest men I know…” Past his trainer disposition laid a kind-hearted man who adored having fun. His hugs and kisses were always a welcome addition in your life. You felt awful that repaying him just seemed impossible. Her eyes lit up softly.
“Hey, I'm telling you he will just be happy to have some time with you,” she grinned, “Unleeeeess, you want to surprise him with homemade chocolate. I happened to buy a kit and well.” The gym leader headed into her kitchen and dug around in a cabinet. Soon, she revealed a box set with little Luvdisc shaped molds and ingredients to make chocolate. “See, I realise now that it would be treading on Marlon's area.” Elesa laughed, “But Emmy might think it's cute. Or at least pretend he's an Eelektross devouring prey.” Either were definitely possible. You smiled at her offer and joined her in the kitchen.
~
You woke up early on the morning of Valentine's Day to surprise Emmet with breakfast. He had taken the day off to spend with you, so you wanted to make everything nice for him. You quickly set out to make pancakes. They were favourites of his, especially when he could drown them in syrups, sauces, and whipped cream.
After the first few had come off the pan, you watched as the yawning man staggered to the table while rubbing his eyes. A Joltik sat on his shoulder curiously. Emmet gave a sweet, sleepy grin at you. “G'morning…” he managed after a few moments with a croaky voice. You offered him a cup of overly sugared coffee, which made him grin. He happily drank down the beverage while you worked to finish the pancakes. Sitting them at the table, you watched as he looked at you adoringly. “D-darling!” he exclaimed, “That's soooo many!”
“It's Valentine's Day,” you replied, “I'm simply expressing my love.” Emmet was quick to start filling his plate and working to top them as he pleased. You quietly sneaked away for a moment to pull out the chocolates you had made with Elesa out from their hiding place. Creeping back to the table, you watched as Emmet basically inhaled the pancakes. He had been late coming in, so you doubted he had eaten a proper dinner.
You stood behind him, which resulted in him leaning his head back over the chair to gaze up at you. Whipped cream and syrup were messily spread around his mouth, making you giggle. You leaned down and pecked a quick kiss to his lips and got a taste of the sweet concoction that coated them. Walking around, you held out the heart-shaped package to him. “Here!” you cooed, “I made you these.” He dropped his fork and knife to take the heart from you eagerly. Taking off the lid, you watched as his eyes went wide.
A piece of chocolate was taken out as he chuckled. “Verrrry cute!” he commented, “You made these yourself?” You nodded and sat down beside him.
“Mhmmm,” you hummed, “Well, Elesa helped a little bit.”
“Yep, yep! She was interested in our Valentine's plans this year,” Emmet told you. Had she been? You did not recall it really coming up before you had come to her to speak about your troubles. Then again, her and Emmet did talk more. You felt a bit nervous now. “Mmm, we should probably leave around twelve today,” he said suddenly, “I do not want to be late for our reservation.”
You were dumbfounded for a moment. What reservation? He had not mentioned any plans, you are certain. For a moment, you were actually worried he forgot the holiday existed. He plopped a chocolate into his mouth while you debated in your head what he was talking about. “Em… What reservation? How did you even get out, all the restaurants around are booked,” you asked.
“At the Striaton Restaurant,” the Subway Boss tilted his head, “I booked back at New Years.”
He… He what?
There was no way. You felt even more awestruck by his words.
“... They are full,” you told him.
“Mmm, not at New Years,” he corrected, “Elesa told me to plan ahead before Christmas. She was worried about our “romantic” day.” You felt like banging your head against the table. She knew all along! The model had strung you along perfectly! You would kill her the next time you saw her for this emotional roller coaster.
“... I am getting the Mont Blanc,” you firmly demanded, “I am getting that, and we are going to share it and then kiss.” Emmet let out a sweet giggle.
“Of course, darling,” he reached out to press a kiss to your cheek, “I would love to! I love you.”
“I love you, too.”
~
Elesa later eagerly found you both and interrogated you on your date. It seemed your relationship with him had become her favourite thing to follow.

Dande rolled two nat 20's in a roll and really took it out on the enemies
Lafavel got to bisect a vampire in an inspirational smite-filled attack
Norra got grappled and bitten by a vampire whilst a shadow dog bit her ankles
...So Norra bites back! Everyone was taken aback.

Oh, hey, the Casteliacone saga deepens. I now have miscellaneous brands in my inbox.
Neo C-Gear, the Marine Tube, Mistralton Cargo, Village Bridge Sandwich Co., the White Treehollow, Join Avenue… what the hell am I supposed to do, just stand there and wave?
And why am I being called a model all of a sudden?! I did not go through a PhD and the Paldean gym challenge to get called a hybrid model!

Tamberlane and the thorny issue of adoption in roots work
Tumblr media
Clearly, there are different types of roots, beyond what the teacher in these panels from Tamberlane is telling her. This is NOT what you tell someone about their roots. Teacher, you are doing this all wrong!
Reprinted from my Genealogy in Popular Culture WordPress blog. Originally published on March 8, 2021.
One of my favorite ongoing webcomics, Tamberlane, hits you right in the face with an issue which often faces genealogists: adoption. Tamberlane, the story's protagonist is told by her teacher, Ms. Callie. that they will be learning about "their roots." [1] This worries her, as she first thinks that it means she literally has roots growing out of her, and later when she learns that roots make you for "who you are." She is concerned because she's from the far-off place known as "Abroad" but her friends comfort her, reminding her that her roots are in Treehollow with the rest of them because she lives there. Cur later challenges Ms. Callie, asking about students who don't know their roots and starts making a scene. Later, the teacher is flustered and doesn't know how to answer questions about "Abroad," with Jentzen kicked out of the classroom as a result, just because he asked a question! This becomes a plot point later in the series, as Cur blames Tamberlane for Jentzen getting fired, even though it isn't Tamberlane's fault, leading Piper to get in a fight with Cur. [2] As it turns out, not even Tamberlane's guardian, Belfry, can adequately explain "Abroad" to her. [3]
Ms. Callie was wrong about roots. As Becks Kobel, a death positive genealogist [4] wrote in October 2017, "we are placed within families, whether biologically or through adoption, that have a long history with all sorts of experiences." Roots are not only based in your blood, but are wider ranging than that, including your chosen family, those you surround yourselves with, and your circumstances. They can be your roots. There are even some Italian surnames, like Esposito, which were given to children in Italy who were given up by their parents or were adopted! At the same time, a surname may be assumed because of an "unofficial adoption, taking on a stepfather’s surname and so on" as was the case with one of my ancestors, Robert B. Mills II (originally Robert Barnabas Packard). Some genealogists even warn about not being "lured into sympathy research via an adoption story" while others note that DNA tests can be helpful for those with ancestors who were adopted or those looking for their birth parents. Sure, you could say that the "standard" family tree wasn't made for adoption, but that doesn't mean it is invalid, as adoptees can be heirs to estate from time to time. Some stick with the so-called standard tree, as "Geni cannot record adoptions" but that doesn't mean that records of it doesn't exist. [5] Russian genealogist Vera Miller talked about this:
Many adoptees become curious about their birth families and hopeful their questions about their separations from their families will be answered. The challenges of some adoptees from the Russian-speaking world is facing that their Russian language skills disappeared or were never developed. Thanks to the Internet, these adoptees can find their families with just as much success as adoptees from the English-speaking world.
That brings me back to Tamberlane. She was, at the beginning of the comic, found in the woods by the citizens of Treehollow and while she isn't always good with communicating verbally, she knows a bit of pidgin Trissol (Silver Sage Sign Language). She calls herself "Tamberlane" when meeting Belfry for the first time in Chapter 1, with Belfry wondering where her parents are, and who left her there. As such, the other stuff I said about adoption isn't applicable here, although it is still worth noting. Hopefully, in the future, this is explored more in the webcomic.

[4] She left Twitter some time ago and now occasionally posts on Instagram. So, she is still active (perhaps more on Facebook), but not in the way she used to be on social media. And that's ok.
[5] In a related note, a Puerto Rican genealogist Teresa Vega, argued that with "Ancestry doing away with <8 cM DNA matches," it would negatively impact Black and indigenous descendants, saying they should "seriously consider that they are preventing family reunification not only due to slavery, but also due to adoption, genocide, famine, etc."

Blight / Blur : Black City and White Forest
In Blight / Blur, Black City and White Forest are both in between Route 14 and Route 15; White Forest comes first when entering through Route 14, then Black City.
Black City is noticeably emptier compared to the other areas of Unova; there aren't much businesses there, and very few people who do live there tend to work in neighboring areas, like in Nimbasa. There's a small mall where most trainers gather, a hotel, and Black Tower- which is in progress of being built up until post-Relic Castle arc.
Trainers who aren't participating in the PWT or Gear Station find themselves in Black City, as they've heard that the previous champion Alder has big plans for it, as well as White Forest.
White Forest isn't like Pinwheel Forest or Lostlorn, however; despite it being filled to the brim with Pokemon, there are a few cabins and houses atop trees.
White Treehollow, like the Black Tower, is under construction until post-Relic Castle.
Both Black City and White Forest are under Alder's governance, and when not in Floccesy or wandering around Unova, he's aiding in projects to help the growth of both areas.
Benga runs the facilityin Black Tower, while Iris runs the facility in White Treehollow, following Nate's ascension to champion.
N and his sisters eventually move to White Treehollow to live there and be closer to the Pokemon. While Hilda doesn't officially move to Black City, she has a condo there for her friends to use- mainly Hugh, who's training under Grimsley.

Guess what I'm making: a Gen 6 on DS HGSS-esque Black and White 3! Starting in the new Novea league, have a new adventure in a new region based on maritime eastern Canada with the legends of Keldeo, Manaphy, Meloetta, Shaymin, Darkrai, Diancie, and 2 new legendary beasts of the Sun and Moon from elsewhere that Ho-Oh traveled after leaving Ecruteak City - a new region with ~100 new forms and evolutions (some official from later material like Sirfetch'd), and after 8 gyms...
Tumblr media
You unlock Unova! Explore Unova as it's affected by climate and political change 12 years post Twin Dragon and Glaciation Attacks, and 12 more gyms: 1 for each type, plus the Striaton Trio and Cheren as multitype (Cheren filling a role like Blue in HGSS), taking you to level 75 before you reunite the Original Dragon with N and Rosa, who are finally ready to part with their dragons
Tumblr media
If you get 100% completion, the game is absolutely stuffed. Celebi is localized to the white treehollow with Zorua and you can find the shiny legendary beast trio and Ho-Oh and Lugia (along with Cresselia, and the wild Therian forms of the 4 legendary genies). Dive underwater in new ruins of the Relic Civilization, explore a fallen meteor in its cave or the origins of the Relic Song, see what advancements people have made since megas were banned and training and better raising led them to evolve in new ways (with a new Fairy type), like Volcarona evolving by friendship in sun like Snom (who is also here) and always having morning sun. Expanded seasons, hidden Grotto, dust cloud, feather drop, and rustling grass expansion to give hidden abilities to more Pokemon and let you find rare pokemon earlier, seasonal wild berry trees on routes and berries now raising friendship so they're always worth using on a Pokémon/with an ability a whole bunch of new areas (some 3D), and some crazy graphical upgrades like 3D battle backgrounds a la Fire Emblem Fates, battle sprite upgrades, multi racial character selection and representation, and general advancements to the Gen V engine making my own mega-game, though it'll take a good 2+ years before it's ready to release.
Early Route 101 and Southshore Town, you'll be able to peer from that roost in the beach to the southern island where you can see an item ball to come get once you have Surf - that contains TM Roost (this'll have the first gym leader, a flying time leader named Ronne with a Corvisquire and Gale Wings!Fletchinder - he'll explain you can find strong flying Pokemon by exploring high areas, and find ones with strong rare abilities by finding them in the right seasons or in hidden grottos)
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
The starters will be Turtwig (grass/rock Torterra with seasonal berries on foliage like Sawsbuck), Fennekin (fire/dark Delphox trickster forest witch), and Mudkip (water/ice Swampert for the northern swamp). Once you get to Unova you'll be given a second starter from a new trio and encouraged to try out a new team - gym leaders will adjust their teams based on the strongest in your party, and there's no limit to where you can explore if you're daring - you get free items like focus sashes throughout the game fairly often now, and the game shifts to be Double Battle heavy around the lategame of Novea. Novea has a dex of 301, and Unova is expected to be an additional 249 when finished (revamped from the ones in BW2, new mons in new places now).
