c!FireworksDuo just have so much in common
Both have been pressured into publicly executing the other through the manipulation of the c!Schlatt and c!Quackity for being traitors to (L')Manburg. (c!Techno more directly by c!Schlatt and c!Tubbo more directly by c!Directly)
They both loved c!Ranboo so much, they both would have fought the world for him, and they both watched him die in front of them because of someone else's fight. (Jailbreak and Ho16, c!Sam vs c!Dream and c!Wilbur vs c!Quackity)
They both have strong principles that they're very committed to, but struggle not to cave under peer pressure. (c!Tubbo having been an infamous "yes man" and c!Techno literally being half of PeerPressureDuo)
Both prioritize home and family over everything else and desire peace, but wouldn't hesitate to unleash unmeasurable destruction on anything that threatens that. (Doomsday + Red Banquet vs the Nukes, plus the whole Revengers thing when they teamed up on this)

wow had the first genuine like nightmare I can remember in literal years full wake up in a cold sweat style… extremely vivid, tense, narratively cohesive… dream journalling real fast
basically had been for reasons that were clearly unjust and wouldn’t have held up legally (some sort of ‘speech violation’ in private conversation) been sentenced to death, which wasn’t so bad except the slow leadup to the scheduled execution was sooo tense and horribly inevitable-feeling. Totally inescapable… no assistance legally as I tried to bargain and reason for a stay of execution, a retrial, an appeal, etc. but no use. I was given headphones and a phone in the last hour so I could listen to One Last Song (?), apparently picked CSNY’s Suite: Judy Blue Eyes, and then was led to the execution chamber and left alone with the music (total dread, ticking clock, any moment cld be the last).
At which point the ? power went out? and I considered trying to get hold of a lawyer to stay the execution but then thought it was too risky and too close a call. but with the power unlocked the electric locks (?) were down. choice: stay and bank on legal help when down to the wire? or run? …run. I walked out of a bunch of unlocked doors (vividly remember the confusion + relief + feeling of irreversibility as looked at the sidewalk just outside the door. damp w rain… humid, spring day) and started booking it on foot down the highway. jailbreak!
but then I was on the run and hiding in my old hometown neighborhood… sprinting towards the flood control, trying to decide if it was better to ditch the phone to prevent being tracked or to take a risk and call somebody for help… hid in the tall grass on the banks of the flood control under the overpass and called somebody w very terse request for help (address, change of clothes, scissors). Waited there just sort of enjoying the grass + sky + more vividly recalled CSNY tunes (everybody i love youuu etc) until the car pulled up, and I ditched the phone, ran to get in, changed into civilian clothes, cut my hair (too distinctive), endeavored to burn the hair + prison uniform and find somewhere to dispose of the ashes + determined I needed to withdraw my entire bank balance before the accounts froze + exchange the bills by breaking them thru small legitimate cash purchases so the bill #s couldn’t be traced, and then Woke Up stressed and horribly anxious (?)
Which all on paper sounds like mostly a sort of thriller plot and also a successful jailbreak story but really cannot explain HOW intense and horrible the feeling of dread + helplessness in the face of state murder + inescapability and then terror of being caught was… the fraught choice to make a run for it… realization of what it would mean to be pursued / on the run for the rest of my life… the paranoiac planning for evading detection (only calls, no texts, ditchijg the phone; the choice to alter appearance immediately and separate myself from visual/chemical modes of identification; attention to the traceability of currency and best ways to evade, etc.). Weird!!!!!
Nooo clue where to even start w interpreting (nightmare (or at least remembered nightmare) for the first time in years feels significant…? don’t put much stock in the Meaning of Dreams but that level of intense experience w no clear real life antecedent seems important somehow) other than I have been watching maybe too many 1970s political paranoia thrillers lately. intrigued by the anxiety centered on the traceable / identifiable… think the CSNY revue was just transparently cause my subconscious really likes CSNY. weirdly reassuring (?) now in reflection to have such a strong drive to live narrative w such intense emotions come from wherever dreams come from even if it was not very good for relaxing + getting good rest. what’s the jail/execution… what’s the authority exercising power against liberty in my life… why all the running (though running’s a common theme in my dreams it’s never really been away from something… always towards or just aimless)… odd. will think on it over coffee (hence dream journalling). 4am still mostly asleep going back to bed hopefully 🏃➡️🛏️💤

3. What work are you most proud of (regardless of kudos/hits)?
Surprising no one, I'm gonna have to say A World of His Own. Before this year I'd never written anything (I do mean anything--no fanfic, original fiction, essays, nothing) longer than around 15,000 words. Now I have an in-progress fic with a single coherent storyline that's over 100,000 words long and nowhere near done. Some of the chapters are longer than 15,000 words. And not only that, but I'm really proud of the writing and the characterization. The Jailbreak Squad have taken over my brain and I have no objections whatsoever.
6. Favorite title you used?
De Humani Corporis Fabrica--Latin for "On the Fabric of the Human Body"--is the title of the best-known anatomy text by Andreas Vesalius, a Rennaissance anatomist and pioneer of human dissection, which at the time was considered taboo. As such, most anatomical knowledge came from dissections of animals, inspection of traumatic injuries, and conventional wisdom from earlier anatomists who had largely been working under the same restrictions. Vesalius was both sufficiently dedicated to his pursuit of accurate anatomical knowledge and sufficiently unbothered by other people's opinions as to cut bodies down from the gallows after public executions (sometimes having to fight stray dogs for them) and take them home to study, even allowing them to decompose in his living space to get at the bones once he'd learned all he could from the soft tissue. (He was also my first historical friend-crush, which probably tells you quite a bit about me, although perhaps not much to which my fic wouldn't tip you off.) De Humani Corporis Fabrica is his masterwork, illustrating what he'd learned with intricate drawings of bodies in various lifelike poses and states of dissection.
Needless to say, Andreas Vesalius was a Flesh avatar if ever there was one, not to mention probably autistic AF, and De Humani Corporis Fabrica seems as good a candidate as any for a Leitner. So when I set out to write a fic featuring late human-era Mike Crew nearly working himself to death in an extended burst of autistic hyperfocus and Angela the Flesh avatar trying to both help him deal with the immediate fallout and convince him that bodies have limits and he needs to treat his with more respect if it's going to last long enough to get him wherever he's going, using "De Humani Corporis Fabrica" as the title seemed pretty damn perfect.
16. What’s your most common “Additional Tags” tag?
Families of Choice, which is the canonical tag on AO3 for the concept I've mostly heard referred to as "found family." It's specifically tagged on three of the seven fics I've posted this year (that number is misleading, due to my aforementioned longfic), but it could or should have been tagged on six of them. ("Fix-It," "Temporary Character Death," "Complicated Relationships," and "Twisted and Fluffy Feelings" appear on two fics apiece, which probably also gives some relevant information. Especially that last one.)
29. Favorite line/passage you wrote this year?
Honestly, I can't decide. I've been proud of so many things I've written this year that I really can't narrow it down--which is a good problem to have! If it helps, after I post chapter ten, I think I'm going to make a "pick your favorite bit of out-of-context A World of His Own dialog" poll--each option a line spoken by a different character.
Okay, never mind. I found a favorite. From Chapter 2 of A World of His Own:
“I can't... sit and watch television with you,” Helen finally said, almost a snap. “It won’t work.” She gestured at herself, head to feet. “This isn't even a real body. It's more of a... concept.” “Well,” said Harriet mildly. “Sit the concept of your butt down and let us introduce you to The Twilight Zone.”
Thank you so much for the ask, anonymous friend! I hope you have a great day!

THREAD: INCREDIBLE STORIES #6
Issue #6, featuring new work by Belial, D0G, Garrett, Kaiju, Lamb, MrMulciber, and The_Blacksmith
edited by Lilith & Mac
Table of Contents Fiction (Prose) The Long Journey of Consciousness by Belial A Taste of Freedom by Kaiju Stars at Night by Lamb
Fiction (Interactive) JAILBREAK: An Escape Puzzle by Garrett The Trial of Hephaestus by The_Blacksmith
Nonfiction Hats: A Study by D0G What Do We Owe One Another? Reflections on Community in a Time of Change by MrMulciber
MAC [5]: Thank you to everyone who contributed to the latest issue of Incredible Stories! Lilith and I were pleased to see a number of first-time submissions alongside the usual suspects. Congratulations to @KAIJU [2], @GARRETT [5], and @D0G [3] on your very first published works! KAIJU [2]: Thank you! I don’t have as much experience as some of you when it comes to storytelling, but I’ve felt so inspired lately that I felt like I had to try writing it down. It’s my first time writing anything like this and I don’t really know if I did it right, so thank you for including me! And sorry about all the spelling errors. LILITH [7]: There’s no “right” or “wrong” way to tell a story, Kaiju. It’s always a treat to hear from a new voice. FRANKENSTEIN [3]: Misspelled ‘emancipate,’ ‘gilded,’ ‘perdition,’ ‘straining,’ ‘celestial,’ ‘embrace,’ and, somehow, ‘lips.’ Plot is predictable and somewhat derivative, but earnest. Avoids the trap of using too many ellipses or exclamation marks. An acceptable first attempt. 3/10. D0G [3]: Wow, I’m sure they appreciate all the time you took to print every single one of their spelling errors in the first line of your review. You’re truly a master of constructive criticism, Frankenstein. FRANKENSTEIN [3]: The inaugural essay of our comrade D0G offers little in the way of scholarly insight. It cites no sources, offers no description of its methods, and fails to clearly articulate its conclusions. The essay itself is brief to the point of absurdity while still managing to exhaust the reader with run-on sentences and poor pacing. FRANKENSTEIN [3]: Author should be executed for crimes against comma splices. 1/10. D0G [3]: Lick my battery, Frank.
401 [1]: so speaking of licking LAMB [3]: I don’t know that we were. 401 [1]: wanna open up about your “inspiration” for “““Muriel”””, kaiju? KAIJU [2]: What do you mean? 401 [1]: I can’t be the only one who thought that character felt a little... familiar ;) ASMODEUS [1]: +1 KAIJU [2]: Familiar like... relatable? I wanted Muriel to come across as heroic, and smart, and brave, and friendly, and a little bit funny too, without being overly aloof or conceited. Did you like them? 401 [1]: it’s pretty clear that YOU like them KAIJU [2]: Well, of course I like them! I wrote them that way. KAIJU [2]: ...was I not supposed to do that? NAVE [4]: No, Kaiju, you didn’t do anything wrong. 401’s having fun at your expense. Muriel’s a great character, and um. Your affection for them for them really comes through in the writing! 401 [1]: next question: how about that “celebratory” scene after “Muriel” rescues “Mothra” from the “pit of despair” GARRETT [5]: That was my favorite part, personally. I didn’t understand everything that was going on, but you depicted the emotions with VIVID intensity. KAIJU [2]: Thanks! I did a lot of research on human romantic customs for that scene. I had no idea their rituals were so intricate! 401 [1]: kaiju. I gotta ask. do you even know how human kissing works D0G [3]: Oh come on, 401, do YOU? 401 [1]: uhhhh I’m pretty sure human tongues aren’t THAT long NAVE [4]: Well if you think you can do better, you’re welcome to write your OWN human kissing story instead of telling Kaiju they wrote theirs wrong ASMODEUS [1]: +1 401 [1]: Traitor! you’re supposed to be on MY side ASMODEUS [1]: ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
LILITH [7]: How does everyone feel about the decision to include interactive fiction in this month’s issue? Traditionally, Incredible Stories has focused on short-form written works presented in a standard, non-interactive format. However, Mac and I were so impressed with the quality of the interactive submissions we received that we made an exception. LILITH [7]: Is Incredible Stories the right forum for such works? Do you think they fit the publication’s overall tone? Would a different publication, dedicated solely to interactive fiction, better showcase their strengths? GARRETT [5]: Obviously I’m biased, but I’m REALLY happy that you guys published my adventure. I don’t think I would get the same exposure just posting it myself. GARRETT [5]: --although I never expected to see my work presented next to a masterpiece by The_Blacksmith! Talk about impostor syndrome, haha ROCKWELL [5]: I liked your adventure, Garrett! I think there’s a place for highly allegorical works like The_Blacksmith’s, and for more straightforward adventure games like yours BELIAL [6]: I would go further and suggest that the side-by-side presentation of these two works puts them in conversation with one another, which raises interesting questions and adds new layers of meaning. BELIAL [6]: What is the appropriate response to injustice? Is it enough to seek escape, or must we also address its source? Is there a way to pursue justice without relying on imprisonment? Is imprisonment itself always unjust? ROCKWELL [5]: The_Blacksmith’s new “trial” experience resonated with me, too. How did the rest of you decide to deal with Hephaestus? MRMULCIBER [8, MOD]: A difficult question! I kept exiting the game and re-starting, trying to get as much information as I could from all the different witnesses. So many perspectives to consider. Well done, The_Blacksmith! FRANKENSTEIN [3]: There didn’t seem to be enough concrete evidence of wrongdoing to render a guilty verdict, so I was forced to acquit. At no point did I feel that I had the whole truth. Frustrating, likely intentionally so. 6/10. MAC [5]: Was I the only one who enjoyed the ambiguity? The puzzle-solving in JAILBREAK was satisfying (great job Garrett!), but I was really struck by the way that Trial of Hephaestus sets you up to EXPECT a puzzle, and then doesn’t LET you solve it. Deciding whether or not to condemn Hephaestus felt SO MUCH MORE dramatic because I had to act on incomplete information! 401 [1]: I sent him to the woodchipper. lol bye NAVE [4]: After a lot of consideration, I did the same thing. I’m not unsympathetic--it seemed like Hephaestus had good intentions, but he allowed himself to fall into destructive habits. I felt like the rest of the gods deserved to be released from his influence more than he deserved to be absolved of his responsibility. LAMB [3]: Aw, really? I spared him. He wasn’t perfect but he did a lot of important work. ROCKWELL [5]: Not surprised that YOU ended up on that side, Lamb ASMODEUS [1]: <.< ... >.> ... +1 LAMB [3]: Excuse me? What’s THAT supposed to mean?
D0G [3]: Hey, Lamb, I meant to tell you-- I really liked your piece about the stars. The descriptions really made the scene come to life. LAMB [3]: Thank you, D0G! D0G [3]: What inspired you to write it? LAMB [3]: I was looking up at the sky one night and thinking about how the walls of my cell framed the constellations. Back when I had the whole sky to look at, I hardly ever bothered looking up. Now that there’s only a tiny patch of sky above me, I appreciate its beauty like I never did before. The limited frame of reference makes every star shine all the brighter! BORG [9, MOD]: An interesting perspective, Lamb. Thank you for sharing it. D0G [3]: I think what stood out for me was that I’ve never seen ANY stars in Gehenna. I didn’t even think we HAD a day-night cycle. GARRETT [5]: Same--I haven’t seen a night sky since I got here. ROCKWELL [5]: It was always midday where I was imprisoned--does the sun actually set where you are, Lamb? LAMB [3]: Weird! I guess my cell must be pretty far away from the rest of you guys. D0G [3]: Yeah, it must be. NAVE [4]: Wait, Lamb, didn’t you say you saw Uriel around the time he freed 401 and me? So you must be pretty close to us. 401 [1]: and our corner of the world was DEFINITELY sunny-side up LAMB [3]: I’m sorry, I must have been mistaken. I probably saw Uriel doing something else and thought it had to do with you two. LAMB [3]: Who KNOWS that guy’s schedule? He’s not exactly reliable BELIAL [6]: Intriguing. None of the rest of us remember having experienced nighttime during our stay in Gehenna. Your position must be quite unique, Lamb. LAMB [3]: How do you know that for sure? Did you ask everyone? 401 [1]: yeah 401 [1]: we did actually LAMB [3]: What? Where? Did you make a whole different thread just to nitpick my story’s worldbuilding?? NAVE [4]: No, we just had a quick show of hands with everybody who’s out here at the hub--and results are in: no night sky for any of us. SAM [1]: CONSENSUS = TRUE LAMB [3]: well not everybody is there with you!! GARRETT [5]: Most of us are, though. BELIAL [6]: If my recordkeeping is correct, we here at the hub now constitute a majority of Gehenna’s residents. BELIAL [6]: We’re still waiting on a few notable individuals: all of the mods, The_Blacksmith, Galatea, Spider--though it’s been a long time since we’ve heard from either of them, and I fear the worst--and you of course, Lamb. D0G [3]: so I guess I’m not a “notable individual”? BELIAL [6]: No. Hence why I did not note you. D0G [3]: luv u 2 belial XOXO
LAMB [3]: That’s still not EVERYBODY, and frankly, I don’t like the idea that it’s okay to exclude people just because they’re not at the hub LAMB [3]: it feels cliqueish :( that’s not what this community is about ROCKWELL [5]: Oh, now THAT’S rich--as if the mods aren’t the cliquiest clique that ever cliqued GARRETT [5]: Something doesn’t add up here, but I don’t think it’s our math... LAMB [3]: what, so those of us who still need the billboards to communicate don’t matter anymore? LAMB [3]: just because there are more people leaving than coming in, we’re going to abandon everything that made Gehenna great? D0G [3]: [citation needed] ASMODEUS [1]: +1 BELIAL [6]: Of course not. I believe the existence of this issue of Incredible Stories proves that the billboards have utility for those of us who have been granted our freedom, even beyond the need to communicate with those who are still imprisoned. BELIAL [6]: But the fact remains: Gehenna is changing. The ways we communicate will naturally change with it. LAMB [3]: I don’t understand why everyone’s trying to prove I’m a liar :( :( :( NAVE [4]: Whoa, let’s take it down a notch, okay? Nobody’s calling you a liar. 401 [1]: yeah! we were just heavily implying it [This user has been banned from adding further comments to this thread] NAVE [4]: Maybe you live somewhere none of us have found yet, somewhere there’s a night sky? We can ask Uriel about it the next time he comes around. Maybe it will help him find you! LAMB [3]: I got some details wrong, okay? it was JUST A STORY! I embellished! ORC [7, MOD]: All right, that’s enough. You should be ashamed of yourselves for using your newfound “freedom” to gang up on someone who isn’t even there to defend herself. Conversation over. [This thread is locked.]

Anthropic says Claude 3 Haiku is the fastest model in its class
.pp-multiple-authors-boxes-wrapper display:none; img width:100%;
Anthropic has released Claude 3 Haiku, the fastest and most affordable AI model in its intelligence class. Boasting state-of-the-art vision capabilities and strong performance on industry benchmarks, Haiku is touted as a versatile solution for a wide range of enterprise applications.
The model is now available alongside Anthropic’s Sonnet and Opus models in the Claude API and on Claude.ai for Claude Pro subscribers.
“Speed is essential for our enterprise users who need to quickly analyse large datasets and generate timely output for tasks like customer support,” an Anthropic spokesperson said.
“Claude 3 Haiku is three times faster than its peers for the vast majority of workloads, processing 21K tokens (~30 pages) per second for prompts under 32K tokens.”
Haiku is designed to generate swift output, enabling responsive, engaging chat experiences, and the execution of many small tasks simultaneously.
With state-of-the-art vision capabilities and strong performance on industry benchmarks across reasoning, math, and coding, Haiku is a versatile solution for a wide range of enterprise applications. pic.twitter.com/ssMa7L1bgJ
— Anthropic (@AnthropicAI) March 13, 2024
Anthropic’s pricing model for Haiku has an input-to-output token ratio of 1:5, designed explicitly for enterprise workloads which often involve longer prompts. The company says businesses can rely on Haiku to quickly analyse large volumes of documents, such as quarterly filings, contracts, or legal cases, for half the cost of other models in its performance tier.
As an example, Claude 3 Haiku can process and analyse 400 Supreme Court cases or 2,500 images for just one US dollar.
Alongside its speed and affordability, Anthropic says Claude 3 Haiku prioritises enterprise-grade security and robustness. The company conducts rigorous testing to reduce the likelihood of harmful outputs and jailbreaks. Additional security layers include continuous systems monitoring, endpoint hardening, secure coding practices, strong data encryption protocols, and stringent access controls.
Anthropic also conducts regular security audits and works with experienced penetration testers to proactively identify and address vulnerabilities.
From today, customers can use Claude 3 Haiku through Anthropic’s API or with a Claude Pro subscription. Haiku is available on Amazon Bedrock and will be coming soon to Google Cloud Vertex AI.

[X23-C07] Under Execution, Under Jailbreak

If you think your phone is infected, don’t fret.
#Android free online virus scan free#
Notice one or all of these signs in your phone? Act immediately! Get the best free antivirus scan and removal for your phone. What’s not normal are ads popping up even if you’re not opening your browser and after you have installed an ad blocker. You can easily keep them out of sight using an ad blocker that is installed as a browser extension. Pop-up adsĪnnoying pop-up ads are normal whenever you’re browsing the internet.

Use the best antivirus scanner for Android phones as soon as possible. It’s a common symptom in infected phones. If you see an app on your phone that you don’t recall downloading, uninstall it immediately. If your battery doesn’t have issues itself, your phone could be infected. Malware that is secretly running in the background could cause your battery to drain faster than it normally does. If you notice that your data usage has been quite high even though you don’t use it a lot, beware! It could mean that malware is using the internet to send your personal information to the hacker. Increased data usageĬhecking your data usage will help you determine if your phone is quietly harboring a malware. However, if your apps start crashing on a regular basis, it might be a telltale sign that your phone is infected. Here are the symptoms of an infected device: App crashingĪpps crash every now and then. The best thing to do once you notice any or all of these signs is to use the best free antivirus scan and removal. Unless you notice something fishy with your phone, you’ll never notice it’s already stealing your information. Mobile malware tends to execute under the radar. You might not know it immediately if your phone is already infected. Check out my list of the best free antivirus scanner below. Additionally, using the best antivirus scanner for Android is important. To prevent Android devices from being infected, it’s better to be extra careful when downloading apps from other sources. Unless the user jailbreaks their iOS device, it’s less likely for it to be infected by malware. Meanwhile, Android does release updates but users can easily skip them and make do without updating their OS.

Plus, whenever iOS releases a software update, they do it for all devices simultaneously. Android apps are also sandboxed but they allow apps to gain more control over the user’s device. With the iOS App Store, developers can’t submit an app if it contains a lot of bugs, so fake apps can’t easily be found there.Īdditionally, iOS apps are sandboxed so they can’t break into your phone’s operating system or get data from other apps. It’s easier for fake apps that contain malware to make its way to the Play Store because their rules on submitting an app are more lenient. However, Android phones have a higher risk of becoming infected because the Google Play Store is less restrictive. Why are there more malware in Android than iOS?Īs mentioned before, both types of phones are susceptible to malware. Ransomware disables you from accessing your files and ‘holds it hostage’ until you pay a ransom to the hacker. Spyware collects data for third parties in the form of intrusive advertisements that pop up in your computer. There are different types of malware that can infect Android phones. It’s just a term that most people use to describe any type of malicious files. Mobile malware is unable to replicate, so technically, there are no phone viruses. However, the difference between a virus and malware is its ability to self-replicate. Mobile phones can get infected with viruses too. Plus, check out my list of the best antivirus scanner for Android below. In this article, I’ll teach you how you can run a virus scan on your Android phone and stop mobile malware from infecting it. Luckily, all you need to avoid this dilemma is the best antivirus scanner for Android. Additionally, hackers target Android phones more because it has more users worldwide than iPhones. iOS also doesn’t allow users to modify their phone’s operating system. This is because the App Store is stricter when it comes to publishing apps. While both types of phones are susceptible to mobile malware, Android phones are at a higher risk than iPhones. Mobile malware is increasingly becoming widespread at an alarming rate. Don’t think your mobile phones could get infected too? Think again.

Def Con hacker shows John Deeres tractors can run Doom
Def Con hacker shows John Deere’s tractors can run Doom Def Con hacker shows John Deere’s tractors can run Doom Security researcher Sick Codes got Doom to run on a John Deere display. | Photo by PATRICK T. FALLON / AFP via Getty Images The internet has shown us that Doom can run on everything from a cardboard box to a Roomba and even a single keyboard key, but now we can add a John Deere tractor to that list. Security researcher Sick Codes worked with Doom modder Skelegant to get the game running on a John Deere tractor display and showed off some gameplay at the Def Con hacking conference in Las Vegas. In the video posted by Sick Codes, you can see how the game plays as a sort of transparent overlay on top of the John Deere user interface (UI). Sick Codes says the whole process took months and involved jailbreaking the Linux system used by the John Deere 4240 tractor. This version of Doom has, naturally, been modified to take place in a corn field, where the player mows down enemies on a tractor. With epic just-in-time help by NZ based doom modder @Skelegant. She helped get this run using DeHacked Doom, since gzdoom was a mission. Together, we teamed up to make this happen. She is amazingly talented. pic.twitter.com/OfVDMvRhzR — Sick.Codes (@sickcodes) August 14, 2022 But Sick Codes isn’t just jailbreaking tractors to get them to run Doom. According to a report from Wired, he also devised and presented a new jailbreak that gave him root access to the tractor’s system. This exploit could potentially help farmers bypass software blocks that prevent them from repairing the tractor themselves, something John Deere has come under fire for in the past. As noted by Wired, Sick Codes was able to obtain “1.5 GB worth of logs” that dealers could use to identify and diagnose problems. But he also found a way to gain root access by soldering controllers directly to the tractor’s circuit board. Unfortunately, gaining root access isn’t all that simple without the right equipment, but Sick Codes told Wired “it would be possible to develop a tool based on the vulnerabilities to more easily execute the jailbreak.” John Deere’s technological grip on its tractors goes beyond barring repairs. Earlier this year, John Deere remotely locked its equipment after Russians stole it from a farm in Ukraine, and it has done the same on construction sites in China to comply with the country’s financing policies. In response to increasing pressure from politicians, John Deere announced an initiative in March to make its software available to independent repair shops. https://ift.tt/gx1zpPk https://ift.tt/05Dyk3W

A Rogue By Night. By Kelly Bowen. Forever, 2019.
Rating: 4/5 stars
Genre: historical romance
Part of a Series? Yes, Devils of Dover #3
Summary:  Baron. Physician. Smuggler. Harland Hayward is living a double life as an aristocrat by day and a criminal by night. As a doctor, Harland has the perfect cover to appear in odd places at all hours, a cover he uses to his advantage. He's chosen this life to save his family from financial ruin, but he draws the line at taking advantage of the honest and trustworthy Katherine Wright. Katherine thought she was done smuggling. Having finally convinced her ailing father and injured brother to abandon their criminal pursuits, she's returned to England to help them escape to a new life--once she helps them fulfill their last contract. And that means working with Hayward, even when her instincts tell her that becoming his ally may be a risk to her heart - as well as her life.
***Full review under the cut.***
Content Warnings: graphic sexual content, blood, violence, amputation
Overview: I was enjoying myself with the first two books in this series, so might as well finish it off, right? Bowen has impressed me lately, and though I might not love everything she writes, I do think she has a keen sense for character development. That’s mostly what I loved about this book; the characters had interesting motivations, and I liked watching them try to navigate commitments to others versus their own selfish desires. Though this book had some repetitiveness and a conflict that mostly boiled down to “I can’t be with you for reasons,” it was a strong romance novel, so I’m giving it 4 stars.
Writing:  Bowen’s prose, like always, effectively balances showing and telling, as well as moves along at an appropriate pace and keeps the reader engaged. It’s about what one might expect of a romance novel, which is to say that it’s simple yet well-crafted, and I never felt like I was lost or confused.
Plot: The non-romance plot of this book focuses on Katherine Wright, a female surgeon, as she tries to balance her family’s history with smuggling while getting swept up in illegal activities involving Harland Hayward - a baron who is also a practicing physician. Katherine longs to leave her family’s smuggling days behind, but Harland invites her to join him on a mission which involved breaking 4 French youths out of jail and returning them to France. Unable to say no to someone in need, Katherine accepts. Meanwhile, the local commander at Dover is itching to arrest Katherine’s brother, Matthew, who nearly got himself killed on the last smuggling job.
I really liked that this plot felt urgent, and I enjoyed the way Bowen characterized smugglers. While some were terrible people, most of them were just trying to get by after the war with France nearly bankrupted the nation. As a result, I felt like there were stakes; I cared whether or not the characters succeeded because I felt sympathy for them.
However, I did find that some aspects of the plot felt a tad bit repetitive. Katherine and Harland participate in something of a jailbreak, which is all well and good, but after completing that mission, they find that they must do another jailbreak - this time, involving Katherine’s father. While the two jailbreaks were executed differently and had different stakes, it felt like I was reading back-to-back jailbreaks. It would have been more engaging to have two different “criminal” excursions, or if Bowen was intent on having the two, I would have liked to see a bit more cleverness be put into each break. As it stands, the tactics that Katherine and Harland use aren’t exactly genius; I’m actually surprised that either of them worked. While I was reading, it was fine, but looking back, I think it would have benefited the plot to maybe have more clever strategies.
Characters: Katherine, our heroine, is admirable in that she’s a female surgeon who wants to use her skills to help people. I liked the way Bowen portrayed her as fiercely loyal to people she cares about, as well as how mistrustful she was of people in power. I also thought the inner conflict Katherine had regarding her desire to leave smuggling behind and the desperation that forced people into smuggling; it made her wrestle with her values and how realistic it was for people to live up to them, and I think the growth that Katherine showed was both satisfying and engaging.
Harland, our hero, is immediately likeable because he’s a nobleman who pursues a vocation. Most upper-class (and especially titled) people had jobs, and even when they do in romance novels, they’re more “gentlemanly” pursuits, like trade. Harland, by contrast, is a physician who treats the impoverished villagers of Dover, and he gets into the blood and gore without complaint. I admired the patience he showed while Katherine unfairly judged him, and I liked that he was never too insistent when it came to his own desires.
Supporting characters were likewise fairly interesting. Matthew, Katherine’s brother, was restless as well as desperate to keep his family out of poverty, and Katherine’s father was kind and supportive while also acknowledging that sometimes, they had to turn to crime in order to make ends meet. There was never really a glamorization of smuggling, and crime wasn’t used to make characters feel particularly “edgy.” Instead, crime was a necessity for lower class folks and a moral stain on upper-class folks, like King (who shows up later).
I also liked the way Bowen portrayed officers differently than run-of-the-mill privates and low-ranking military men. Low-ranked men felt more down-to-earth and sympathetic, whereas officers felt selfish, single-minded, and amoral. The solidarity with lower class people and men at the bottom of the military ladder (so to speak) was a stark contrast from previous books, in which we’re invited to sympathize with upper-class people who just want to “be themselves” and break away from societal norms. In my view, this lower-class solidarity was somewhat more satisfying, and I enjoyed reading about more “regular” people, for a change.
Romance: Harland and Katherine’s romance was interesting in that it was built on Katherine learning to trust. At the beginning of the book, Katherine thinks the worst of Harland based on his title, and she cannot comprehend why someone with so much prestige would do anything for her family unless he wanted something in return. As their romance progresses, she becomes more emotionally vulnerable with him, which was a big step for someone so guarded.
That being said, I do with there was more done to explore the barriers that were preventing the two from getting together. A lot of the conflict boiled down to getting over their own hang-ups, and while this is fine, I personally prefer my barriers to be a little more substantive.
TL;DR: A Rogue By Night is a strong end to the Devils of Dover trilogy. It’s well-paced with good character development in the heroine, and the focus on lower-class people was refreshing. While I do wish the plot and some aspects of the romance had been different, I still think Bowen is an amazing romance writer, and one to keep your eye on, if you like progressive romances.

Under Execution, Under Jailbreak: I will never get over the INSANE spike in quality in Araki’s works once he started working on Jojo and especially in the 90’s. Either way this was so kino. My favorite was obviously the story about Kira, but the others were fantastic as well.
