Chapter Six: Living Wake
On my fifteenth birthday, I asked Walter for a living wake. I’d read about it in one of the books he gave me. I also read that some fish only live to be fifteen. And my powers had been strange for the past three years. Sometimes, I’d wake up floating outside my tank in a bubble of water I’d made for myself. I sat inside the frozen outer shell because it was my ocean for however long I could sustain it. Fisher hated it because I made a mess, or I’d get stuck and needed help getting out. Or I’d wake up floating on the water above the tank… And sometimes… Sometimes, I had dreams while I was awake. So, I thought it was the end for a fish person like me. I thought it was the ocean’s way of calling me home.
Walter said yes, but only because I cried. Walter let Donna, Dick, Wally, and Roy in to see me while keeping watch outside. I’d never heard Wally, Roy, or Donna’s voices before, so I couldn’t sleep or eat until I saw them. Wally always brought me an ocean gift on my birthday. That year was no different. “Happy birthday, Garth,” Wally smiled. Scratchy and deep… But not deep enough for him to sound grown up.
“Gee, I never thought—. Wow,” I smiled.
Then Donna approached. She wore a dress, and her hair was different. Bigger. She dressed up. “Garth, I don’t understand any of this. What’s wrong? Are you sick?” Donna questioned. Her voice was soft and sweet, but it was more than that. She had a maturity that made me want to be still. I didn’t move. I couldn’t speak. “Garth?”
Roy swallowed hard and marched toward me. I thought he’d hit me, but he wrapped his arms around me. He embraced me… And I wept in his arms. “Chill, man… Nothing’s gonna happen to you… Dig?” Roy asked. He let go, and I hid my face in his shoulder. His voice was bold and resonant, shaking me to my core while offering more comfort than I’d felt in years. I had to work up the courage to look him in the eye. And he saw it. He saw every beating Fisher ever gave me. Ten in total. Fisher beat me so bad once I thought I died. Roy saw it all. He saw my love for him and my fears and my pain. I thought he’d reject me, but he squeezed my shoulder. I winced, still sore from my last beating. Fisher beat me for asking questions he didn’t like or seeming like I wanted to escape from him. The truth was, I had nowhere to go, and I wasn’t brave enough or smart enough to leave on my own. “What’s that turkey gonna do to you?” Roy questioned. His eyes softened and were the most sincere and pained eyes I’d ever seen. He cried for me. Tears slid down his cheeks as he studied me.
“Nothing… I don’t think—. I read somewhere that most fish only live to be fifteen. So, if I’m not human, then this is it. I wanted to be with my friends, just in case—. Just in case it was the last time we’d ever be together,” I stammered. Roy held his palm to my face, gently pulling my eyelid down with his thumb. Then he touched my neck with two fingers.
“You’re not dying,” Roy replied, “You’re the picture of health… Unless you feel sick. Do you feel sick?” I shook my head.
“But I feel strange. I can’t control my powers anymore,” I explained, “But I don’t wanna—. Can we enjoy being together even if it turns out that I’m wrong?” Roy grimaced. I could never tell if he was angry with me or my situation.
Dick stayed silent the longest, but I could see something stewing in his mind. “Roy, show him the sketchbook. There’s no use in making him more upset,” Dick commanded.
“Who died and made you—?”
“Open my present for you first… I figured you might be from the Atlantic Ocean if you’re from around here, so when I went to California with my aunt and uncle last year, I got you something from the Pacific. You know… For your tank,” Wally smiled. I opened the box and pulled out a dried red creature and a handful of shells. “That’s a Sunstar. I bought that one from the gift shop in Los Angeles, but I found all the others.”
I touched one of the shells and saw the ocean as if I were there. The waves lapped at rocks and sand. The loud sound of birds that seemed so distant and unreal to me became clear once again. Wally grabbed the box and shells, setting them aside as he pulled me back to reality. “What happened?” I asked.
“You spaced,” Donna replied, “Your eyes started glowing, and it was-. You couldn’t hear us.”
“I saw the ocean. I saw the sand and the rocks… I heard the seagulls. I saw the seagulls,” I described. Roy sat on the alcove bench and started drawing while I recounted what I saw and explained how I’d been dreaming of the ocean while I was awake.
“How long have you been cooped up in this place? Don’t you ever get to leave?” Donna asked. She sat on a bench across from my tank.
“Where would I go?” I asked. “As far as I know, I’m the only one of my kind, and I wouldn’t be able to fend for myself in the ocean… It’s too big.”
Roy and Dick exchanged eerily similar glances. Roy narrowed his eyes, and Dick nodded. Wally and Donna didn’t notice. Roy returned to his sketchbook while Dick pulled out a notepad. “Wait-. Before I forget… Can you still use your—?” Donna trailed off before grabbing my hand and lacing her fingers with mine. She held our hands up, and I smiled. Carefully creating enough heat in my hand to warm hers up. She giggled. I think it upset Roy because he tensed up but quickly softened without a word.
Dick stared at me. “You’re gonna live another year. You won’t get your gift from Roy and me until then,” Dick announced.
I looked at Roy, and he grinned a mischievous half-smile. “Dig?” Roy asked. I shook my head. “You’ll understand if you tough it out… Can’t you try and give everybody one measly stinkin’ year?”
They wanted me to fight. As far as I knew, there was no gift. But I played along. I nodded. That was the first night in months I slept peacefully without a disturbance… And it was the last time I’d be happy that year.

VIP Only (2023) ep. 3, 4 & 5
Review: Soft to strong.    Rating: 7/10
Summary: Author struggling with a writer’s block and non-existent love-life, Lui Li, becomes a permanent fixture at Gu Jing’s restaurant. Will Gu Jing’s indulgence be a panacea for Lui Li’s troubles?
Pairing: weak gong X weak shou turning strong
What I liked:
# Aquarium date
Tumblr media
I think that aquariums are one of the most visually pleasing places to have date at. It is a public enough place that is still in-doors/all-weather. It gives plenty of opportunity to chat and build a rapport.
Those visuals reminded me of in Color Rush (2020) and Kei×Yaku: Abunai Aibou (2022).
# cute prop
It is so cute. The You Are Mine (2023) CP had their acrylic stand super-randomly placed in the room and appearing centrally in cut-away shots and transition shots.
Tumblr media
# Egg scene
Tumblr media
It is common for a couple to feed other by hand, soup, chopstick, lips, etc. Due to trope reasons, I don’t appreciate people not part of pairing feeding those who are part of the paring, unless it is kids or parents or kin figures. So I would have been upset if Gu Jing’s employee was to feed Liu Li the egg he peeled.
# Gu Jing's drama
Gu Jing being filial-piety-trapped into the taking care of the restaurant rather than being able to freely pursue an ad industry career is a reflection of Taiwanese capitalism. This was also explored in the two BL series this production house did prior to this with increasing levels of familial obligations in each. SME longevity problems! Laissez-faire who?
While it is not shown who exactly is draining him financially and emotionally, it is probably his grandma or someone among his kin. Gu Jing having problems of his own not only adds to his arc but also complicates the pair dynamics as we see at the end of ep 5. Too drained to date is one of the more realistic tropes in BL.
The online smear-campagin he faced and the leech kin are probably connected too.
But then Liu Li’s absconding parents, who seems to want him to settle down, are no solace either.
# Liu Li’s third book
I love how his books so far have been commemoration of a love that didn’t happen and associated heart-break. I love the ease with which they strike their deal. Lui Li knows what he wants. So does Gu Jing. I mean, Liu Li was studiously taking notes of Gu Jing when the latter is working, cooking or simply existing. The CP has progressed to a point where Lui Li is not a passive part of Gu Jing’s still-life photography, now he is actively posing. Gu Jing proactively offered his romantic services for Liu Li’s novel factory, free-of-cost. They are folding origami bluebirds even when out on snack breaks discussing the novel.
# Super cool CP
As their first date/b'day hangout revealed, they have different visions of dating.
Gu Jing is pursuing by lecturing on pursuing. Lesson #1 was constantly creating physical contact during romantic pursuit. Delivered while maintaining physical contact. Hands-on approach to teaching. Simulated dating. Complete with blocking drinks and honeyed water hangover remedy. I didn’t even get too irritated by the turning face into kiss trope. But I continue in my conviction that the director did the series dirty by opting for different angle shots of that kiss. Holding that pose is awkward on so many levels.
And Liu Li is fully leaning into the wakashu/apprentice trope.
But in many ways, they are like an old married couple. They seem to sync like they have known each other for ages. Especially, the way they tease each other. Not to forget their body language when returning from the horror movie.
Misattribution of arousal, suspension bridge effect, Lima syndrome, Stockholm syndrome etc. None of them got anything to do with this CP.
Body as pillow scene looked so comfortable.
Playing with origami bluebirds should have looked way more childish but with how short that scene was I think the director managed to nail the scene without making it awkward or uneventful. This BL has unleashed so many silly things to do when drunk that are totally sane.
Even outside drunken shenanigans, this couple spends a lot of time in-doors in harmony, folding paper and making dumplings.
“You are more well-behaved after drinking.” Gu Jing is an inspiration for BL characters around the world.
Also, Liu Li probably thinks of himself as the gong. Overall, I get the vibe that even if he gets to be gong for their first time, it wouldn’t last. A’Li, better luck in next life. For now, please enjoy Gu Jing’s services and bite what you can actually chew.
# Gu Jing & A’Ren
I like the tacit-understanding and the overall dynamic between Gu Jing and A’Ren. I particularly like the taste-testing scene where the employee gets to try the new thing. What made that scene even better was how Gu Jing endorsed Liu Li’s picky eating habit in the very next scene.
What I didn’t like:
# Underutilized beauty
Danmei is called so for a reason. Gu Jing’s 一姐* goodness has been wasted so far, imo. We got to see him in sleeveless just once but even then, it wasn’t the most flattering look. He also got an unflattering POV shot for no reason at all. Why? I am disappointed at the DOP.
# What’s with the tiny pottery-making scene? I hope there is an extended version somewhere.
# Song lyrics at the bottom corners of the screen gives me the impression that end credits are rolling. Each time it takes me aback. They should have placed the lyrics, in motion, vertically on either of the sides.

༑ ࿐ྂ。Lee Heesung
- Karaoke
Sitting on the couch of the private karaoke room, exhausted having just sung and danced all of I Can’t Stop Me, Heesung reaches out to take some of the kimbap you had made together before karaoke happened, kind of like two dates in one day. Since he was always busy, he wanted to spend the most amount of time he could with you this weekend, in case he couldn’t meet you the next. Heesung always did a great job of making you feel loved and appreciated, and today he especially wanted to give all his love and attention to you.
“We should rap all of Canceled in one breathe” Heesung suggests, knowing it was a whole three minute song. Although you know you’d die, you nod excitedly, ready to shout at the top of your lungs “THIS YOU?” because Tana definitely gets canceled every 5-7 business days. He starts off the song, both screaming at the top of your lungs, starting off with Bryce Hall 😼. The song goes very swimmingly actually, definitely taking more than one or two breathes.
Taking a call from your phone, you step outside so as to not disturb the caller with Shake it Off. Your mother wanted you home soon, but you desperately wanted to spend more time with Heesung. Stepping back into the room, you decide one more song is short enough to catch the last train home, you grab the remote and pick your last song, Perfect. It was definitely slower paced than the songs you had sang before but you wanted to have at least one moment of romance before it’s completely dead. Taking your hands, he wraps them around his neck and places his hands on your hips and sways side to side as he sings every word beautifully. Even if you could sing as good as him, he was always so hypnotizing when he sang to you. Ending the song with a kiss, you guys both pull away, very sad at the fact that the night has come to an end.
THE REST ARE UNDER THE CUT!!
༑ ࿐ྂ。Jay Park
- Aquarium
- Aquarium
Walking through the hallways hand in hand, you enjoy each other’s presence while admiring all the children excited about the stingray that just swam by. Watching Jay’s face light up when he had finally found the sea otters, you giggle at how cute it was. “Look at all the baby sea otters, Y/n, they’re so cute ahhhh'' He says eagerly. Pulling out your phone to take a picture of him, he grabs your hand and takes your phone. “No, Y/n, we have to take this picture togetherrrr.” he whines. Sighing, you agree and wait for him to find someone to help take the picture for him, obviously right next to the sea otters.
Continuing down the aquarium building, you find the automatic sliding door leading to the outside. Knowing exactly what lies beyond those doors, you pull Jay’s hand and rush out. As a kid, you loved coming to the aquarium to spend time at the petting tank, and now you got to experience it with Jay. Finding a spot at the tank, you dip your hand in and touch the bamboo sharks. You sigh in relief at the nostalgia of it, and turn your head to Jay. “Don’t you want to touch them too?” You ask innocently. Faced flushed, he frantically shakes his head, giving you a blatant no.
Laying your head on his shoulder, you bask in his presence, exhausted by the exciting day you had. Turning on his phone to check the time, you notice he’d set his lockscreen to you. “Did you take that while I was petting the sharks?” Embarrassed, he turns away and avoids the question. “HEY, I could take a picture of you alone for my wallpaper but you could??? Why is this so unfair???” you ask.
“Because…” He says with a sheepish smile on his face. You quickly take out your phone and snap a picture. After a moment of playful fighting and begging to delete the photo on Jay’s end, he ultimately gave up and let you save it as your lock screen as well.

༑ ࿐ྂ。Jake Sim
- Laser tag
Having Jake as a partner, he’d always taken you on more high energy, adrenaline rushing dates, and today was no different. This date, however, he decided to take you to play laser tag, something you had never done before. Entering the lobby, you both decide to be on the same team for the first round, which helped you feel a bit of relief. Choosing a vest to put on, you get very very tangled in it, which causes Jake to laugh a bit but he eventually helps you out.
During your first round, Jake helps you out, staying by your side the entire time and even holding your hand to lead you through the room. It felt really nice, seeing him so protective of you in the moment, but you knew better than to like the thought of it too much, because the next round was going to be a lot different. Unexpectedly, your team lost, which made Jake feel even more competitive and pumped up for the next round.
The next round starts, and surprise!!!!! You and Jake are on opposing teams. It starts off very well actually :D. As soon as you enter the room, your heart starts beating out of your chest and you’re so nervous to be alone. Cautiously maneuvering through the hallways, you scan the premises thoroughly, knowing if Jake ever sees you throughout the game you’d be screwed. Surprisingly enough, you go a bit of time before you hear your vest’s alarm go off, signalling to you that someone has gotten you. You look all around you taking some time before finding Jake crouching on the other side of the wall. You run to the other side of the same wall, and decide to scare him before he could shoot you again. It works out very well, because the next time you see him, he screams and drops to the floor in shock. Taking this chance, you shoot his vest and run away, leaving him no time to get you back.

༑ ࿐ྂ。Park Sunghoon
- Birthday Party
Laying on the floor of your living room with Sunghoon, you lie on your back, trying to cool your body down as much as possible. The hot and humid Korean summers were definitely always fun, but not when you were craving cuddles. Thinking of activities the both of you could do without overheating, you think back to how refreshing all the ice cream was at your friend’s recent birthday party. Although it wasn’t even close to your guys’ birthdays, it gave you a great idea. You shoot up and rush to get dressed, leaving Sunghoon very confused.
Finished, you come back to the living room. “Sunghoon, get dressed. We’re going to the market.” Without question, he does as you ask and you both head to the market in no time.
Walking hand in hand down the ice cream aisle, you grab all the flavors you enjoy, filling your whole basket with different ice creams, toppings, fruit, drinks, and even a cake. “You’re quite hungry, aren’t you?” Sunghoon teases, earning him a slap to the arm.
As soon as you get home, you send Sunghoon alone to the bedroom, telling him you need time to prepare everything. You had pulled all the stops, whipping out the cheap snoopy shaved ice maker, birthday party hats, streamers, balloons, and banners. It was no one’s birthday in particular, but the fake birthday party put you in a festive and refreshing mood. You had set up a giant ice cream sundae bar, and had even made lemonade.
Calling Sunghoon to come out of the bedroom, he was not surprised but very appreciative. He knew you’d pull sh!t like this Wanting to make it even more fun, he suggests to make sundaes for one another, which you happily agree to. The day was so fun, you had forgotten all about the time you had a few hours earlier, suffering in the heat of your apartment.
Sunghoon on the other hand, was so happy that you planned something like this. He was never one to do anything cute for you unless you asked, begged so this time he wanted to show you how grateful he was to you by giving you one FREE boop on the nose. Scooping some ice cream with his fingertip, he lightly taps your nose, leaving the melted strawberry ice cream to drip off your nose.

Being a foodie yourself, you and Sunoo would always go cafe hopping to try out different desserts and drinks. This Saturday morning in particular, you both decided it was time for a change. This change for the greater good would include brunching for hours like stuck up rich moms and judging everyone in the facility, as you do when you are a brunching mother. Dressing in your finest brunching attire and of course, sunglasses, your waiter leads you to the table and you strut down that walkway like you know the difference between regular and Belgian waffles.
Crossing your legs at the same time and sipping your orange juice, wishing you could have added some champagne. Your orders finally arrive, having ordered the classic avocado toast and eggs benedict. Starting with the avocado toast, as per tradition, you and Sunoo construct the perfect first bite, shove it into your mouths, make eye contact and a disgusted face, even though it was very obvious that you guys thought it was delicious.
“I feel they nailed the seasoning because avocado, egg, and bread are known to be very bland flavors. The poached egg was perfectly runny in the middle, which was so satisfying to me, especially knowing that the chef can actually cook an egg right.” You start off, pretending you were some high status food critic, above Gordon Ramsey almost.
Sunoo takes his spoon and splits apart the poached egg on the eggs benedict. The egg just so happened to be a tad bit overcooked and the yolk didn’t rush out as smoothly as the other one did. You make eye contact with Sunoo, the most disgusted look plastered on your faces. A couple seconds pass by and you burst out laughing, forgetting about the egg yolk and shoving a huge bite straight into your face.

- Zoo
When you first suggested going to the zoo with Jungwon he looked at you with a confused face. He loved spending time with you, but why the zoo? It’s stinky and there are too many children everywhere. Nevertheless, after much convincing, he gave in and went with you. The screams of all the tiny children were giving him a headache, but he kept reminding himself he was here for you. Seeing the alligators first, it was definitely acting up and snapping its mouth very angrily and hissing. Just because he wanted to be nice by coming to the zoo with you, didn’t mean he was going to hold back on his snide remarks.
“That’s you that one time I accidentally ate your pastry.” He comments. Rolling your eyes and smacking him in the arm, you continue on the path looking at all the animals in awe. The whole time you walked around you bickered back and forth, many “That’s you when/cause”s being thrown around mercilessly.
The comment that took the cake and left both of you speechless was one made by you. Walking towards the flamingos, everyone knows them for being notoriously stinky. Pinching your nose to go with the comment you were about to say, you chuckle. “It smells like that one time you accidentally farted in your VLive.” you manage to get out with a straight face. I made that up lol
Jungwon stops in his tracks, looking at you like you had just betrayed him. .He stomps his feet on the floor and whines in the middle of the walkway. “Y/nnnnnn you know I’m sensitive about thatttt.” The time you spend with him after you get home consists of him clinging to you, demanding your undivided attention, cuddles and kissies, and for you to blow dry his hair after he showers.

༑ ࿐ྂ。Nishimura Riki
- eating competition
Watching mukbangs all day and cuddling with Niki definitely got both of you hungry pretty quickly. With Niki being a bit homesick and you wanting to improve your cooking, a great idea pops into your heads. You wanted to cook Japanese food for Niki, hoping to aid his homesickness, and Niki wanted to see how much food he could shove down his face until he explodes. And with that, your whole date had become a food eating competition.
Setting all the food down on the table, you had done a very good job. Working your ass off to make not only omurice with curry, but also yakisoba and fried chicken, you were very ready to start your whole competition. Portioning it out evenly with a scale beforehand, you and Niki countdown together and start scarfing down food like you’ve never eaten before. With a mouth full of rice, Niki manages to get out a “It’s really good.” Knowing he liked your food made you feel so proud even though you had just shoved a whole piece of fried chicken in your mouth.
Several minutes, three enhypen members walking past you judgmentally, and 10 napkins later, you and Niki were too stuffed you even have food this close to you. Queue the rest of the enhypen members, they oh so generously gave you their service and finished the food for you guys. Concluding that you and Niki could not in fact eat two family sized meals in one sitting, you lie on the couch about to pass out.
“That was so fun. We should do that again.” Niki says while groaning from stomach pain. “And thank you for thinking about my homesickness and making me Japanese food. I love you so much.” He adds. Ending the day with complaining about being too full, planning the next competition, and even inviting the other members, you both pass out an hour after you had eaten and were punished with the dishes in the morning for being cringely in love out in the open like that.

Be My Dad
Sanders Sides: Janus, Logan  A Vague AU Writing Prompt: @wildhorsewolf asked: Guess I'm a parent now with Janus being the dad and Logan being the kid Blurb: Janus has no interest in being a parental figure to a kid, but trying to convince the universe of that is another thing entirely.  Fic Type: Familial Soulmate!AU Overall Fic Warnings: Mentions of Scars  Taglist in Reblog.
To most souls, a food court was a necessary evil. Loud. Lots of people. But plenty of food options all together in one place. Perfect for those who liked a variety of choices or those who had picky eaters in tow.
It was a place to meet up with friends, family, or business associates. A place where one could sit back and observe society at work. To see people at their best...and most definitely at their worst.
There was something soothing about the chaos that Janus enjoyed...as a spectator. He could never imagine being right in the middle of it.
Not unless he was doing what he was doing right now. Trying to hide in plain sight in the middle of a crowd.
After all. He was thirty now. Single. Childless.
Obviously a menace to society in a universe that seemed obsessed with everyone being part of a ‘family.’
A Universe that had decreed that all adults who remained childless by the age of thirty, would then be subjected to being bombarded with children in need of a proper parent figure to bond with in their lives.
He exhaled, absently brushing against the raised scar on his cheek, barely looking up as a child burst out wailing nearby.
He’d checked earlier. That particular wailer hadn’t had the golden sparks. It meant he was safe.
For now.
He ran a hand through his hair, flipping another page in his notebook before he continued scrawling on the page. Maybe Virgil had actually been onto something when he said he was vanishing into the wilderness of Europe for the rest of his life.
Sure, Janus had laughed six months ago when his best friend had turned thirty and begun complaining about all the kids coming out of the woodwork to ask him to be their Dad.
It’d seemed impossible at the time. To have children want to come up to Mr. Shadows Incarnate and expect Virgil to put them to bed and tell a bedtime story.
Now though, he understood why Vee had become more reluctant to leave his house as the year had worn on. Because the mini spawns really had come out of nowhere once his own thirtieth birthday hit.
And it was awful.
Wherever he went, it was inevitable that some child would approach him, shimmering golden sparks floating around them indicating that they were looking for a Parent Bond.
It was also as inevitable that he would scare them away just as quickly.
After all, his halfmoon scar and creepy yellow eyes had caused plenty of kids to scream and run with a single look years before his thirtieth birthday.
No, at least Virgil had a bit of that shy emo charm that made him more approachable, even if the merest appearance of anyone under four feet had his best friend going pale as a corpse and ducking out before the kid could take more than two steps towards him.
Privately he was certain Virgil would find a kid perfect for him before the year was out, despite his best friend’s attempt to avoid the inevitable.
He knew Virge would make a good dad. Compassionate. Protective. His best friend had a dozen other traits that would benefit him when the right child flared with him.
Unlike Janus.
Who could make a grown man cry with less than four words and a glower.
No. He couldn’t imagine having any child coming to him in the middle of the night expecting comfort.
He knew he was intimidating.
He knew he could be scary.
It wouldn’t be fair to subject a child to that on a daily basis.
Honestly, it felt like a slap to the face that no matter how much he achieved, how many degrees he got, or businesses he owned, or careers he pursued, or money he made…
The universe felt that one couldn’t be complete unless said person also had a screaming, slobbering, dirty child in tow.
Janus ran a hand through his hair, again brushing the crescent scar on his cheek as he looked up long enough to watch a cluster of mothers with their dozen and a half children in strollers rush by, seeking salvation at the nearest set of golden arches with at least four of the kids already screaming for their happy meal toy.
Even if he did make a connection with any kid brave enough to approach him...Janus could never imagine trying to coerce a screaming brat into eating their chicken nuggets all by himself. Could never stand to walk around with food, slobber or worse, vomit stains on his best suits like a badge of honor. Could never be patient enough to listen to the long and rambling and pointless stories he’d heard multiple parents suffer through while observing them here in the food court.
No. There was no way Janus would allow the universe a say in how he ran these next five years of his life.
He had goals.
Life plans.
And he didn’t need some interfering Being with an obviously unhealthy parent complex ruining that.
The scrapping of a chair being pulled back broke through the gentle hum the noise the chaos of the food court had receded to, causing Janus to look up from his paper in time to see a boy, wearing a faded black long sleeved shirt with matching glasses and thankfully older than the screaming toddler throwing french fries six tables over, plop down in the seat across from him.
A child. With golden sparks shimmering in the air around him.
Oh goodie.
Janus barely stopped himself from rolling his eyes. And here he’d thought that the fact that he’d caused a pair of twin girls, a baby, three boys, six preteens, and four other children under the age of five to scream in terror and/or burst into tears before the lunch rush had even started would have been enough for the universe to call it quits for the day on attempting a Parent Bond.
“I have a prospersition for you.” The boy said, making eye contact. Janus blinked, pen pausing mid stroke as he raised an eyebrow to the child. Prosper...prosper? Oh. “A prop-osition?” He asked, careful to pronounce the word correctly.
The boy nodded once, pushing his glasses back up his nose. “Prop-osition” he repeated, saying it properly this time. “Will you listen to it? Please?”
Oh, now there was a please? The kid hadn’t even said hello. Janus exhaled, running a hand through his hair, again fingering the raised scar on his cheek, eyes darting about without much hope for any sign of a frantic adult looking for their wayward offspring as he sat back, tapping his pen on the table. “I’m busy.”
The boy’s eyes flashed. “No you’re not.”
Janus scoffed, gesturing to his papers. “I assure you that I a--”
“Are doing what you do every Friday. You’re not busy. You just sit here. All day. Reading. Writing.”
Observant. Janus frowned, again glancing around for a guardian figure. He didn’t think children thought much beyond eating, sleeping, and playing with their peers. “That is considered being busy by most people, I don’t have time to tal--”
The boy shifted to his knees, the golden sparks dancing around him as he carefully placed eight quarters on the table before pushing the pile over to him. “For your time.” He said, looking up to meet Jansus’s eyes once more.
Clever. Not quite the amount he usually took for a consultation, but he doubted a child could come up with that much cash. Still. It was the first time one of these golden sparked spawns of the devil decided to pay him instead of screaming bloody murder.
Janus exhaled, laying down his pen, sitting up as he clasped his fingers together, resting his chin on them. “I’m listening.” Though he doubted anything good would come from this proposition. He could already predict the direction this would go.
The boy relaxed, though he stayed half kneeling on his chair. “I need you,” his mouth twisted slightly, grey eyes glittering. “to pretend to be my Father.”
Father? Ha. Called it. “No.”
Golden sparks flared as the boy lifted his chin. “You didn’t even ask ‘Why.’”
He smirked, ignoring the sinking feeling in his stomach as he pushed the coins back. “I don’t need to.” It was obvious why the kid wanted to play pretend. After all, the sparks surrounding him were only visible to those like Janus. Single. Between the age of thirty and thirty-five. Childless. If the kid needed a fake dad...well this wasn’t his first rodeo with the concept. “You either need protection from some bullies, which--” He gestured to himself. “You think I look scary enough to intimidate them.” Though not scary enough to keep the kid from bugging him in the first place. “Or else you have lied to your friends about who your Dad is or what he does and so--”
“You’re wrong.”
Janus cut off, tilting his head. “Am I?” He was certain he wasn’t.
“You are.” The boy kept eye contact, grey blue eyes hard as stone.
It would be an intimidating gaze once he grew older, Janus was sure. “Enlighten me.”
The boy pushed the coins back across the table. “The Aquarium is having a Father/Son day today. I want to go.”
Not what he meant by enlighten, but he’d humor the kid. “So?”
The boy rolled his eyes, shifting to his knees so he could better rest his arms on the table. “I can’t exactly partisiis--partissee--par--”
“Participate?”
He nodded. “I can’t exactly participate if I go by myself, dummy.”
Dummy? Who just helped the kid pronounce ‘participate?’
Janus shoved the quarters back to the boy before picking up his pen, tapping it against the table. He could see the kid’s problem though. It made sense why the aquarium wouldn’t want to let hordes of little demon spawn run around tapping on the glass, licking the floors, and breaking things unsupervised. “I’m not spending fifty dollars to play your Dad, kid, just so you can look at some fish.”
A pet store would work just as well and wouldn’t cost a dime. If he was willing to go along with this.
Which he wasn’t.
He didn’t even like fish. Not since that stupid childhood fishing accident that had given him the lovely scar on his face in the first place.
No way would he willingly go along with some brat to a place filled to the brim with the creatures.
Despite how brilliant of a scheme it was. One Janus would have used himself though under different circumstances.
Though he supposed, if he felt like admitting it, which he didn’t, but he still---it….hurt in a way, that the kid, even having the sparks, just wanted to use him to get in to see some boring fish instead of trying out a real Trial with him to see if they had any sort of parental bond.
It was a stupid feeling.
He should be used to being used.
The boy adjusted his frames, barely blinking as he shoved the quarters back across the table, staring Janus down. “Adults get in for only ten dollars today. Kids get in free. If.” He emphasized the word. “Their Father brings them.” He shifted in his seat, pulling out a twenty and slid it across the table. “For your ticket.” He said simply, eyes flashing. “I’m only asking for your time. I don’t want to go on a Trial with you. I don’t need or want a Dad. I just need an adult with the time on his hands to pretend to be one and let me esplore the place for two measlely hours.”
Double ouch. At least some kids attempted to do an actual Trial Run with him to see if their sparks would Flare before being so blunt in telling him he wouldn’t be their Dad.
Janus frowned, already shaking his head. “Kid, I don’t--”
The boy pulled out another twenty, placing it on the table. “Two hours.” He said simply.
“You don’t even know me--” Sure, he knew the boy knew he was in the Trial stage of life since the stupid floating sparks thing, even if he couldn’t see his own, went both ways. But that didn’t mean that he should just shove--
The boy placed a third twenty on the table.
Janus exhaled, running a hand through his hair, again fingering his scar as he glared at the child. “You’re seriously bribing me? Where did you even get that much cash?” Hopefully it wasn’t stolen, but he’d applaud the boy for being so prolific in his thievery.
“Not important.” The boy stated, pulling out a fourth twenty without breaking eye contact.
Why was he being so persistent?! Any other child would have run away by now.
“Why me?” He demanded, leaning forward, sneering in a way he knew made his eyes look even more creepy. “Why not bribe some other--”
The boy hesitated, a fifth twenty already in his fingers as his steely gazed wavered. “If I tell you why, will you go with me to the Aquarium?”
That was hardly a fair exchange. The answer could be super simple and he’d be stuck with the kid for two hours. “I’m going to stick with my ‘I’m scary theory,’” Janus said instead, gesturing to his face. That was the usual reason kids gave in most circumstances.
The boy frowned, lifting his chin. “I can be scary enough on my own without your help.” He said shoving the sleeve of his shirt up, revealing an angry red corded scar that wrapped around his arm from wrist to shoulder. “We match, kinda. Your scar looks similar. Makes it easier to pretend that you’re my Dad. That we were in the same accident.” He pushed the pile of money towards him. “And if anyone suspects you aren’t my birth father, then the sparks will show them that we’re on a Trial and that our scars mean we’re meant to be.”
Meant to be.
It took a lot of effort to not touch the crescent mark on his cheek. To ignore the fluttering in his chest at those words.
They’re just pretty little lies.
Sure, there were ongoing theories that families all shared a similar trait that marked them. Whether that was having a mole on the same part of their stomach, sharing a taste in mustard, having an allergy to hay, hair having the same cowlick, or having similar looking scars--Janus kept his hands firmly on the table as he pulled his eyes back up to meet the kids.
It was hearsay though. Nothing had ever been proven. Not when the sparks flaring between parent and child was a far more accurate indicator that they were meant to be a family.
No, he highly doubted anyone would Flare with him during this five year tortrue period. Not even this kid despite the sparks dancing between them.
Janus took a steadying breath. It was fine. He didn’t need a family. Not even a pretend one for two hours. He was better off alone now that Virgil had harred off to who knew where. “How long do I have to wait before you run out of twenties and give up?” He said, keeping his voice cool. “Because I’m not taking your bribe, kid, regardless of the amount. You’d be better off hiring a nanny or something.”
Though he was curious just how much the boy thought it would take to convince him to go along with this farce.
The kid made a face. “I don’t want to be coddled the entire time.” He snapped, the fifth twenty vanishing as he shoved his sleeve down. “All anyone ever does is treat me like I’m breakable since--” he gestured to his arm, the scars once more hidden. “And I’m sick of it. You look like you’d happily let me fall off a bridge if I wasn’t careful and I just...I just--” He shook his head. “I need to not be cared about for a bit.”
Let him fall off a bridge? Ouch. Janus focused on relaxing his clenched hands, one finger at a time. “So you have a death wish? I’m not gonna be complacent to--”
The boy growled, slamming his hands on the table, steel grey eyes hardening even as they shimmered with unshed tears. “No. I just want to look at the fish.” He hissed. “I want to esplore. Learn. SEE. Without having a grown-up hovering over me like I’m freaking china. All you would have to do is stay near enough to keep any other metaling adults away. That’s all I want. For two hours. To be treated like a normal kid.” His hand clenched as he took a breath, bottom lip trembling. “I thought you of all people would understand that.” He whispered, eyes flickering to the scar and back.
It took a lot of effort to not touch his face. To maintain eye contact.
Sure.
He understood.
Janus had wasted years chasing that particular dream throughout high school and well into his first couple of years at college.
It had all been for nothing.
People judged the book by the cover. Few ever took the time to look deeper.
And it sucked that Janus was being forced to reckon with the fact that if he didn’t go with this kid and pretend to be his Dad, he’d be like every other adult unwilling to give the boy a chance to be ‘normal.’
…Great. Just. Great.
He’d just been guilted into spending two hours looking at the fish.
Janus broke eye contact, cursing under his breath as he shoved his papers into his book bag and stood, grabbing his jacket and hat off the chair.
Maybe he should follow Virgil’s lead and disappear into the wilderness for the next four and a half years if the kids were going to start pulling this type of act on him.
“You got a name, kid?” He asked, fishing out a single twenty from the stack before shoving the pile back at the boy. Enough for the ticket. That’s it.
The boy caught his breath, eyes going wide. “You mean--”
How could eyes hard as steel one second go so soft like freshly fallen ash the next?
You know what. He didn’t want to know. If the kid knew how to do puppy dog eyes, then he knew how. That was that, but after today Janus would not be falling for them again.
“Name.” He repeated, impatiently gesturing for the boy to follow him as he tugged his hat down over his eyes. “Else I’ll make one up and I guarantee you will not like it.”
The boy was by his side in a flash, golden sparks swirling. “Logan.” He said, adjusting his glasses with a small smile. “My name is Logan.”

Double Date
The second installment of Ancel’s shenanigans
Ancel didn’t bother to text Berenger after the date. If you could call it that. Ancel only vaguely remembered the night after they were seated, he had somehow drunk wine like shots and the result was pure memory loss. He preferred it that way. He remembered Berenger talking about his pet fish. The man kept fish. In an aquarium. He called it a hobby. Ancel couldn’t remember what else they’d talked about, he’d tuned Berenger out after he said reading was his favorite pastime.
Ancel read. Well, he read romances. Well, he listened to audiobooks of romances, while he was getting ready to stream.
Ancel pushed aside the sheets and cursed as his head throbbed. At least Berenger had gotten him home. Or maybe Erasmus had. He shuffled to the shower and just stood under the spray until his head hurt more than he wanted to stay in the steamy shower. Pulling off the shower cap he slipped into his favorite robe - a jade satin robe that brushed his ankles - and stomped to the kitchen.
Erasmus sat at the table, teacups and teapot spread out on the table as he buttered a toasty English muffin.
“I thought you might want something, so I made peppermint tea.”
“What are we, in a Jane Austen novel?” Ancel snapped. Erasmus blushed, looking at the muffin as though it would provide him moral support. Why did he have to be so damn considerate?
Ancel frowned, slinking into the chair across from him and trying to sound polite, “Thank you. Tea sounds nice.”
Erasmus’ smile returned very slightly, filling the cup he had brought out for Ancel. The tea set was an heirloom from his grandmother and using it always made Ancel edgy.
They sat in silence for a few minutes, and Erasmus refilled his cup before asking, “You had fun last night.”
Ancel squinted his eyes, “Not really. Why? What makes you say that? Did I tell you I had fun?”
Erasmus’ head tilted, “Oh. Well you, ah… tried to give Berenger a lapdance in the parking lot.”
“Hm.” That wasn’t so bad.
“When he paid for dinner, you tried to steal his credit card and sponsor a penguin in Antarctica. And then you called him racist when he said he didn’t think you could do that.”
“Oh.”
Erasmus continued, his voice faltering, “You asked him how big his dick was, and demanded he and Torveld compare sizes. They asked us to leave the restaurant after that.”
“Why didn’t you stop me?” Ancel cried and Erasmus jumped, “Fuck, he must think I’m a lunatic. Not that I care about him, but… fuck!”
Erasmus looked at him with wide eyes, “You also gave him your personal phone number, home address, and streaming information,” he paused, shrugging gently through Ancel’s aghast silence, “I thought you really liked him. You tried to give him your social security number, but he interrupted you.”
“Well, I’m never going to see him again. You need to break up with Torveld too, just to be safe. God, what if I become an anecdote at their work parties or something?” Ancel rolled his head back and winced as it pounded.
“I’m not going to do that…”
Ancel tossed back the last of his tea and slammed the cup down too hard, “Well, it doesn’t matter anyway. I don’t care what he thinks of me.”
Ancel stood and swept around the kitchen. He needed coffee. Not just tea. This was a coffee situation. Erasmus lifted the empty cup hopefully, checking the bottom.
“What about you and Torveld? Any luck there?” he was going to scream if Erasmus had more luck than him.
Erasmus blushed, immediately confirming the worst, “He’s very nice. He called me to make sure I’d gotten home all right, and…”
Ancel’s phone chimed, and he glanced at it, throwing it back on the counter before registering the text.
“Who is Gerry?” He exclaimed, cutting off Erasmus, “And why is there a blueberry beside his name.”
Erasmus blinked at him. Ancel was sure he was just imagining the tiny smirk, “You called him Gerry. Gerry the Berry. After you said his name had too many syllables.”
Ancel opened the text.
Gerry: You seemed interested in my fish.
Attached was a photo of a pristine, floor-to-ceiling fish tank filled with brightly colored coral and eye-catching fish.
Ancel glared at his phone.
“Is it him?” Erasmus asked, his tone rising.
“No,” Ancel lied distractedly, “If you’re not supposed to eat the aquarium pebbles, why do they make it look like pop rocks?”
“Don’t eat the aquarium pebbles, Ancel.”
“Why is he texting me about his fish? I don’t care about fish. They’re… fish!”
Erasmus took a serene sip of tea, “You said you wanted to name all of them. You cried when he said they didn’t have names.”
“Why would he think I cared from that?” Ancel shook his head, thumbing a reply.
Ancel: I’m not. I hate fish. Unless they’re served with butter and lemon.
Ancel paused before he hit send, tuning back into Erasmus’ words, “What did you say?”
Erasmus had that look on his face, like a puppy trying to communicate in human language, “I said, he seemed to like you, Ancel. Even when you barfed on his shoes, he just… sort of laughed.”
It was Ancel’s turn to blush, and he hated it. His cheeks burned, muttering, “God, if he’s pathetic enough to be texting me after all that…”
He looked back at his phone. The text bar blinked at him. If this Gerry guy was that desperate for company, that desperate for someone to fawn over his fish, maybe he would be worth something after all. Ancel could put up with a lot, for the right price. He deleted the text.
Ancel: The large blue one is called Timothee.
Ancel nodded, satisfied. Flirty, cute, good for opening a conversation. Conversation Berenger would soon be paying for the honor of having with him.
Ancel poured the coffee into his largest mug, diluting it with an appropriate amount of milk and sugar, and flounced back towards his room. His head felt much better.
“Bye, babe,” he called absently back at Erasmus’ distant farewell.
It was time to do his hair.

Obey me! House of Lamentation Headcannons! 🏚🌇☄🔥
There is a cornfield on the property. Sometimes Beel goes in for a snack, gets lost, and it takes two search parties to find him.
This is crucial information, there is a giant bathroom for the brothers. It has 6 sinks (excluding Asmos private bathroom) and a long ass counter and shelved filled with products the little baby boys use. Lucifer usually yells at Mammon for spitting toothpaste on the mirror.
There is a upstairs balcony. Belphie usually falls asleep there sometimes. It's a great view of the eerie garden they have in the front.
Levi's gamer room aquarium is actually connected to the indoor pool they have. That's awesome right? Who doesn't want to swim with Henry?(Unless he's the Zodiac Killer.)
Lucifer has a cursed ventriloquist puppet room. He uses magic to make them float to terrify any of the brothers past curfew.
There are two fridges in this house. One in the kitchen, and one next to Beel's bed.
Mammons room is the garage. On the ceiling are hanging tree air freshners covering the entire ceiling of his room. Mmm yummy tree.
Asmos bathroom has a mosaic art piece portrait that lies above his bathtub. He thinks it beautiful while the rest beg to differ.
Satan's bedroom is so messy that he has book tunnels. Kinda like how a hamster burrows in its bedding, think of that but Satan with books.
Cerberus has a giant doggy door in the back of the House.

Back on my bullshit, did I ever really get off?
Anyway, I'll build the empires gt community from the ground up if I have to. I love gt fantasy settings.
I've also decided to call this au "wither rose fairies au" and it will be tagged as such.
A Little Help
No tws
...
Jimmy paced his bedroom. There was a ceremony in a week, one he was the star of. If he was like any previous Cod Father, Jimmy would make water like illusions in the sky of cod sigils, a start to a new year blessed by the fish the merlings of the swamp are descended from.
But no matter how much Jimmy tried, the spell won't work. His fingertips spark with green light, but nothing happens.
He looks at the folded up note on his desk.
NO. Jimmy didn't need help from a vermin of a fairy, one who wrote a very condescending letter at that.
And don't think he didn't notice how the fairy's "friends" had been tormenting him. Knocking things over, stealing anything he leaves alone for five seconds, stealing his lapis and drawing on his counters.
He could do this by himself. He's got this. He just needs to focus, practice. He will be the Cod Father the Empire expects him to be.
-
It was two days before the ceremony, and nothing. He was impatient. Hundreds of years of tradition, broken because of him.
He was getting desperate.
The morning sun was rising, and Jimmy had spent all of last night practicing to no avail. The cod chose him for a reason, unless it was all some fluke and Jimmy was going to be burnt at the stake for idolatry or false worship.
Jimmy's eye caught on a folded note on the kitchen counter by his cod aquarium. Didn't he leave that on his desk?
Jimmy gave a resigned sigh, stupid clever fairy. "Tay?"
...
Fwip and Sausage still had their eyes closed, breathing steady, glowing dimly. Asleep. It made sense for how early in the morning it was.
Gem was always up, writing down everything she remembered from the scrolls from the colony on the inside of the walls. While she would never guide the colony, like she was trained her whole life to do, she still could improve her and her friends' quality of their new life.
But, like always (But recently more so), Gem was tired. Sausage and Fwip joked she was nocturnal, falling asleep late in the morning and leaving the other two to their devices for the day. Writing things down in the night.
Gem was ripped out of her drowsiness hearing Jimmy yell. Of course she knew he was in the room she was writing on, attempting some sort of spell, really struggling. Her ears were alert for the name of her alias.
And he said it!
Gem jotted down a quick note on a paper scrap for Fwip and Sausage when they woke up, little white lies about taking a morning stroll and getting bearings in the swamp. She tip toed out of the wall, fluttering up behind the merling.
Gem dusted off her dress and hood, wanting to make a good first impression. She cleared her throat right by his ears.
Jimmy whipped around, Gem resisting the urge to flinch at the sudden giant movements. Was this a bad idea? No, Gem was smart and made good decisions. It was too late to back out now either way.
"Hello, Jimmy," Gem greeted, keeping her breath steady and slow. No books could prepare her for how big humanoids were face to face. "Lets take this outside."
...
Jimmy was more stunned than anything. Being honest, he kind of thought the letter was a prank.
But no, in front of him was a fairy. Tay wore a green leafy dress with a soft purple petal like cloak. On top her head covering her long red hair was a purple flower of the same color, looking like a wizard hat a bit too big for her. Her wings were delicate like a dragonfly, but when reflected in the star light were translucent purples and blues.
"Do I get to know your actual name? Jimmy asked once outside. They were in the temple garden, over run with vines and moss, a pond of cod in the center like every other structure in the empire.
"No," Tay answered, no hesitation whatsoever. "Can you show me the spell you're trying to do?"
Jimmy took the instructions out of his pocket, engraved on a stone tile. He held it up to Tay's eye level where she was flying.
"Its a ceremonial festive spell the Cod Father has to perform," Jimmy explained. Tay looked over unimpressed, like she already knew that. "The ceremony's tomorrow and I can't get it right. Can you help?"
Tay inspected the spell, nodding. "Lets see what we can do.
...
Gem flew back into the walls an hour or two later, feeling refreshed from the outside air. Especially compared to the stuffiness of the walls.
Fwip and Sausage were not where she left them, so they must be out borrowing. Gem collapsed on the pile of cloth and fuzz they've amassed since settling in here. Writing down magic was one thing, demonstrating it was another. Gem was exhausted, but glad she could help.
As her mind faded to sleep, Gem could barely hear the frustrated cries of Jimmy or her fairy friends' laughter.
...
The audience applauded Jimmy as he bowed, the magic sensation still ticking his finger tips. Only took the early hours of an morning, but Tay was a surprisingly good teacher.
The rest of the day was spent dancing and playing games, so Jimmy was spent when he got home. He made himself some food, his eye catching on something before he closed the cabinet.
Sweet crackers, a dessert snack common in the empire. Jimmy put one in his mouth forgetting how good they tasted, sad there were only a few left. He thought for a moment before pushing the jar to the ground. Terracotta and crackers went everywhere.
"Shoot!" Jimmy said, putting on his best mad voice. Luckily, some fairies have been making him very mad lately. "I'll clean that up tomorrow, a shame I'll have to get rid of all these."
Jimmy went up to his room, hoping Tay appreciated the thank you gift.

Uncle Percy Headcanons
Okay so I lied. I had a think, and anon, if you want Percy with daddy issues, I think I’ve come up with some fun headcanons with a hint of trauma for you. Enjoy? (jk please enjoy I live for positive affirmation)
Okay, so I’ve seen plenty of percabeth fics where they have kids and live happily ever after (not the shit I’m into, but you do you, percabeth writers. keep up the good work). But let me propose to you another option:
A Percy who loves kids, but who had such a bleak childhood that he can’t imagine having kids of his own.
That’s right, kids. A Percy who is so afraid of either becoming Gabe or somehow leaving his child fatherless that he actively does not want children.
Because, let’s face it, Percy would never become Gabe, but the older he gets, the higher the chances get that he’s caught off-guard by a monster and dies. And if his significant other is a demigod, too? Especially if his significant other follows my headcanon and is a child of Hades (and in this house, they’re always a child of Hades unless otherwise specified)? It’s upsettingly likely that Percy’s kid grows up without one or both parents.
So, whether Percy realizes why or not, he just... doesn’t want kids.
But that doesn’t mean he doesn’t also really love kids.
So, I present to you: Percy, the fun uncle.
From ages 18 through 34, he babysits Estelle whenever Sally needs, and she loves every minute of it. He plays dolls. He plays house. He introduces her to board games. They go to the movies, he takes her shopping. Of course, by simple association, you become the fun aunt, too, and contribute to the spoiling of Percy’s baby sister (because no matter how old she gets, she will always be the baby sister).
Percy has a hugely playful relationship with Estelle, but he’s also there for her when she needs him. He teaches her how to stand up to the school bully. She comes to the two of you first when she has her first major crush and subsequent heartbreak. Percy loves that they’re so close, and dear reader, you know that he would make the absolute best dad if he were to ever have children.
When your friends start having kids, Percy becomes the fun uncle for them, too.
He teaches Jason’s kid how to push Jason’s buttons. So much so that Jason’s daughter calls him Sky Boy for a solid three months.
When Annabeth and Reyna adopt a little girl, you and Percy are the only ones she’ll go to the zoo with. You and Percy have memberships to the Bronx Zoo and Aquarium because of taking Estelle all the time, so when Annabeth’s daughter insists on going to the aquarium, you’re more than happy to oblige.
Once, when you and Percy had both Estelle and Annabeth’s daughter at the aquarium, Percy convinced the sea lions to do tricks for the girls, and they. lost. their. damn. minds. Now, every time you go to the aquarium, Percy has to come up with more elaborate things to try to get the various sea life to do. So far, the most impressive has been getting the nurse sharks to chase their tails.
Percy teaches Frank’s kids that their dad turns into an animal when he gets surprised (thankfully, Frank has grown out of doing it all the time, but when he’s really caught off-guard, he’ll transform). So naturally, the kids get into a competition of who can get Frank to turn into the weirdest animal. Naturally, Percy is the winner, having scaring Frank into turning into an ocean sunfish.

i have this random headcanon about maxwell, i don’t know if ive shared it with you!
i think he’s really fascinated by animals, and really likes being around them. animals of all kinds really— he thinks they’re adorable and so interesting. he’s never thought about having any besides his cat, lady lord (he spoils her rotten), but he adores going to zoos and watching wildlife documentaries.
on that note, he probably donates A LOT of the company money per-year to wildlife conservation efforts. he’s a real softie and just wants to make sure he’s doing everything in his power to make sure the cute innocent animals are safe.
he might even volunteer at a cat shelter once in a while, but he keeps that a secret :)
Animal Lover Headcanon [Maxwell Lord]

I cannot even put into words how much I adore this headcanon— this type of thing literally means the world to me.
I love the idea of him being intrigued by animals. When he gets free time he loves to sit at home and watch the wildlife documentaries on the Discovery Channel or National Geographic. I just know he owns stacks upon stacks of books about birds and reptiles and fish. He's so curious and really enjoys learning about them, despite him not really having anyone to show off this knowledge too. It's like his guilty pleasure.
I like to think he has an aquarium at his home and even one at his office. He probably keeps Marine fish because they're so pretty and colourful (despite being difficult to take care of), and he really finds peace in watching them swim around after a difficult or stressful day at work. He's fascinated.
YES— Lady Lord. Because Maxwell has a fluffy white lapcat with big blue eyes. She's loyal, she's protective over him and slightly territorial around new people who Maxwell invites over. Maxwell adores her. She keeps him company when he's lonely and she rubs herself all over him, curling up on his tummy when he lies in down and following him around the house. She loves to get attention from him. When he goes to read the morning paper, he'll find her sitting on it so he can't get to it unless he gives her attention first. She's a loud purrer because she's always happy, she has absolutely no reason not to be. And Maxwell really does spoil her. She eats the best gourmet food like salmon and caviar. She prawls around the house in her pretty pink collar with her name embellished into it. When Maxwell says "anything you want you can have it," that extends to his cat too. Maxwell has a huge garden with high walls for Lady to play out in when she feels like it but she prefers the indoors anyway. Maxwell will grumble and complain about the way she sleeps at the foot of his bed or the cat hair on his suits, but he wouldn't have it any other way. He tells her about all the complicated business stuff he's faced with during the day at work, and she listens. Lady is probably his best friend.
Max volunteering at a cat shelter?? My heart can't take it. He is totally a cat person. Whilst Lady is a gorgeous pedigree, he loves all different cats no matter the breed or where they come from. He cherishes the comfort that spending time with animals can bring.
He absolutely donates to wildlife conservation charities whenever he can. At least once a year he'll hold a charity gala just to help grant liberty and freedom to the likes of enslaved animals or animals that are nearing extinction. I feel like Maxwell's love for animals is truly where he differs from his other business associates. Whilst they'd prefer to donate to capitalist organisations for their own reputational gain, Max really does have a soft spot for animals and wanting to take care of them. I'm not saying Max doesn't occasionally donate to a charity for his own selfish benefit— to make himself and his business look good (because he totally does), but he's aware of the power and influence he holds and he will do everything in his means to make sure positive change happens.
There's a relatively small cat shelter in the suburbs of DC and he'll help out there when he gets the chance. Everytime he leaves he will always leave a sizeable donation. He keeps it a secret because he isn't exactly sure how it might affect his reputation. Despite being seen by the public as an influential CEO responsible for creating one of the most successful businesses in America, he genuienly is a softy at heart, especially for animals.

Slinging her backpack over her shoulder she adjusts the straps before giving her co-workers a smile as she steps out from behind the workspace.
“I’ll see you guys in a couple of days.” (Y/n) says as she waves to her co-workers.
“Be safe!” One of them yells.
“I’ll try my absolute best!” (Y/n) says before stepping out the café, she stops in her track when she spots Max leaning against one of them any sports cars he owns, his hands were buried in his pockets as he waited for her, sunglasses covered his eyes, but she could feel his eyes almost staring through her soul. “What are you doing here?” She stops a few feet away from him.
“Picking you up from work,” Max says as an almost cocky smile spreads across his lips, she licks her lips as she adjusts the strap on her shoulder. “I’m also taking you to the beach.”
“The beach?” (Y/n) asks as she stares at him with disbelief. “Right now?” They hadn’t gone to the beach the previous day when he had taken her to the aquarium, they had spent too much time walking through the exhibits and time had gone by too quickly, and he had taken her home, promising to take her another time.
“Why not?” Max asks as he removes his hands from his pocket, he pushes himself off his car and takes a step towards her.
“You’re wearing a suit and I’m in my work clothes.” (Y/n) states. “We’re not dressed to go to the beach.” Max softly chuckles and licks his lips.
“I don’t mind a little dirt,” Max says and reaches for her backpack. “I heard the sunset is supposed to be a sight to see.” He takes hold of the strap from her bag and pulls it down her arm. “You should witness at least one sunset in Velours.” (Y/n) opens her mouth to protest, but no words came out. “Come.” Max opens the passenger side door for her. “I’ll take you home afterwards.”
“I hope you mean my home, not yours.” (Y/n) says as she steps towards his car.
“Your apartment,” Max says, she stops in front of the door about the climb in. “Unless you want to come home with me instead.” She turns to look at him with wide eyes. “I’m joking, go on, get in, we don’t have all afternoon.” (Y/n) lets out a sigh and climbs into the car, he hands her the backpack he took from her and she placed it on her lap after putting on her safety belt, he closes the door and walks around the car and climbs in.
“Have you seen the sunset at the beach?” (Y/n) asks as he drives away from the café, he glanced at her before focusing on the road ahead.
“No.,” Max says sharply. “I’m sure my mother took me when I was a child, but I don’t remember it.” (Y/n) nods her head, she didn’t know much about his family, what had happened to his mother? What about his father? He hasn’t talked much about himself, only asked questions about her.
“You don’t talk much about them.” (Y/n) says. “Now that I think about it, you’ve mostly asked me questions about my life, but you never talk about yours.” She could see his jaw clenching for a moment before the muscles relaxed, her eyes move to his hands gripping the steering wheel.
“I prefer hearing about you,” Max says. “But I’ll tell you about them in the future.” (Y/n) nods her head and looks ahead of her, deciding to rather not push him, he’ll talk when he was ready, soon enough he pulls into a parking space near the beach and cuts the engine, he climbs out the car and walks around to open her door, only for her to step out the car, he waits for her to step away from the car before closing the door and locking his car. “Let me carry that for you.” He takes her bag and slings it over his shoulder.
“You don’t have to.” (Y/n) says as she pulls at the shirt she wore.
“I don’t mind,” Max says, they approach the beach before stopping to remove their shoes, once she steps onto the warm sand her feet sink into the golden coloured sand.
“Just don’t run away with it.” (Y/n) jokingly says as he steps onto the sand, the sand almost feeling foreign underneath them, it had been years since he last stepped foot on the beach.
“I don’t plan on going anywhere,” Max says as they approach the water. “Have you ever been to the beach?” Canridge didn’t have a shoreline, which made him curious if she had ever seen the ocean.
“Once.” (Y/n) says. “Many years ago, I remember the crystal clear water, it was absolutely beautiful.” Max nods his head. “It was just that one time, we never went again after that.”
“Why not?” Max asks, the cold water spills over their feet as they reach the ocean, she shrugs as she looks down at the water.
“I don’t know, they never gave me a reason and I never bothered to ask.” (Y/n) says. “Could have been a money issue, could have been something else.” Max slightly frowns. “But it’s okay, I’m at a beach now.” The sun slowly begins to disappear, the golden rays falling onto her skin, making her almost glow.
“I hope you can stay in Velours,” Max says as he watched her, she looks up from the ground to look at him. “It would be a loss to not only me but Velours as well.” She could feel blood rushing to her cheeks. “A beautiful face like yours would be missed.”
“Now you’re just talking nonsense.” (Y/n) says as she turns her head away from him to look at the sun, he stops and takes hold of her wrist, stopping her in her tracks, he pulls her back and turns his body to face her.
“Don’t insult me like that,” Max says. “Many of the women in Velours would kill to have your natural beauty.” She looks past him, trying to avoid eye contact with him. “Avoiding eye contact won’t make me change my mind about you.”
“I’ve seen the women in Velours, they’re beautiful, Max.” (Y/n) says. “I’m not even close to them.”
“Don’t insult me like that,” Max says. “Many of the women in Velours would kill to have your natural beauty.” She looks past him, trying to avoid eye contact with him. “Avoiding eye contact won’t make me change my mind about you.” “I’ve seen the women in Velours, they’re beautiful.” (Y/n) says. “I’m not even close to them.”
“Yet I chose to take you to the beach with me,” Max says. “You’re the one that caught my eye, and I’m not the only one that’s looking at you.” She meets his eyes. “I’ve seen other men looking at you, admiring you from afar.” But they wouldn’t dare make a move, especially not knowing that Max had taken an interest in her, yet all the enemies he’s made would love nothing more than to touch her, ruin her and kill her for the sake of revenge, When those words left his lips, all she could do was stare at him, blinking at him, obviously refusing to believe that and he knows, he could practically see what was running through her mind. “We might not know much about each other, and we might have only met a week ago, but I can’t help but feel attracted to you.”
“I, uh.” (Y/n) stutters, her mind practically freezing up at his words.
“I can’t help but miss your company when you’re not near,” Max says. “I find your presence calming, and the heavens know how long it has been since I’ve felt that.” She searched his eyes for lies, looked over his face, searching for a sign that he was lying, but couldn’t find anything. “If you’re looking for a sign that I’m lying, I’m not.” He lifts his other hand and gently caresses her cheek, he brings the hand he was holding up to his neck, he placed her fingers against the skin. “My heartbeat won’t lie to you.” She could feel his pulse underneath her fingers. “You’re beautiful, no other women in Velours can compare, I enjoy your company and I hope to heaven and hell that you don’t have to leave Velours at the end of the year.” How was she supposed to respond? She found him attractive, but she didn’t think that in a million years that he would find her beautiful, his fingers trail down her cheek before settling underneath her chin. “Tell me to stop if you don’t want me to continue.” His hand releases her hand that was on his neck, his arm wraps around her lower back and pulls her flat against him, his lips brushed against hers, kissing her passionately.
For the first time, Max wasn’t paying attention to his surroundings, which had made it easy for his enemies to spot him on the beach with (Y/n), giving them an idea for a plan. “He’s got himself a bitch.” The sinister smirk spread across the man’s face as he watched Max lean in and press a kiss to (Y/n)’s lips. “And we’re about to take advantage of it.”

Primary Access Required: Testing, Testing
In which Heartwood heads back to (bloody) Coerthas in order to test Aislinn’s aether dampener and catch themselves a spidery bioweapon!
Aislinn arrived in Heartwood’s front hall after a quick rest and a change of clothes. Seeing Rising near the tanks, she walked up and peered into the aquarium. "How's your friend?" she asked, doing away with any preamble.
Rising was eyeing the smaller fish swimming around the bottom of the tank as Aislinn approached. "Seems like he's doin' alright! If he ain't been eaten yet I don't think he will."
Aislinn gave a brief smile as she caught sight of the little bugger. "Looks like he's one of the team now. Good on him." she nodded before turning and taking a seat to wait for things to get under way. "How about yourself? How's things?"
Cravendy slips out from her room and joins the others by the couches. Once seated, she immediately begins to fiddle with her gun, double and triple checking its parts on repeat.
Riylli lazily waves to Cravs as she enters and takes a seat near her. "Hey! Have we always had this many Miqo'te in the company? Why'd no one tell me?"
"Still need a name though." Rising rubs her chin as she was clearly running through suitable options in her head. "Crimble I suppose seems alright, an' can't complain here, yourself? Carve anythin' neat yet?"
"Crimble." Aislinn tried the name out a few times, murmuring it under her breath. "Aye, that fits. Tiny-sounding. Like a crumb or a thimble." At Rising's question though, she tilted her head. "I'm getting really good at spatulas. And kindling. Lots of kindling for the fire." she replied in a deadpan way before shrugging in wry amusement. "So it goes."
"Well then after you start your fire with the kindlin' you have somethin' to flip your food at least! I guess next thing ya should work on is a fork or a plate eh?" Rising plopped down on the other chair, cursing a moment later. "Shite, we're headin' to Coerthas right?"
N'yami moved through the estate with a carbuncle following right behind her, the Seeker chose to stand next to the railing and eye the group that had showed up. Ears flicked at the mention of Riylli's comment then offered a small wave. "I tend to hide out in my workshop, only come out when I'm either needed or dragged out."
N'ana Firesong stretches.
“I always figured ye cat-folk kept to yourselves...” Cravendy dips her head at N’yami. Case in point.
Riylli waved back to N'yami and flashed her a quick grin. "Well, it's nice to finally meet ya then. My names Riylli." She said, before her friendly attitude turned on a dime as she turned back to Cravs. "Don't call us cats." She said, her voice cold and clearly annoyed.
Haila meanwhile, merely remained silent. She could see new faces being involved in this particular case, and it didn't bring any relief more than worry. Having more people meant bigger risks of losing someone again, or at least, such was the case in her eyes as she glanced around with a small frown.
N'ana Firesong simply dusted her legs and made herself comfortable.
Evelyn Blazewing laughs and shakes her head upon hearing Riylli's comment. "Fufufu... this vessel is merely temporary. But I suppose I am still /technically/ a Miqo'te..." She brought her bandaged right hand up to cover the left side of her face. "I much prefer the company of my familiar than I do that of mortals. But, I figured I should at least come out every once in a while to converse with the commoners..." She smiled smugly to herself with her last comment.
Riylli Aliapoh raised an eyebrow at Evelyn's comment, then looked around the room to check everyone elses reactions only to find no one looking as confused as she was. "Erm... Right. Well, nice to meet you too... I think."
N'yami Synch: "N'yami, ya ever need somethin' fixed lemme know and I'll lend a hand." The carbuncle next to the Seeker jumped up onto the Seeker's shoulder to wrap around her like a scarf, the summon wanted to feel a part of the conversation. "Oh, and this is Whackara before she hits me for not introducin' her." The summon puffed out her chest with joy. "So I'm sure the rest of ya are as excited as I am to head out to Coerthas and deal with that cold hell."
Cravendy Hound grunts, but obliges to Riylli’s request. She was used to hanging out with pirates whose conversations were often thinly veiled insulting contests, and old habits die hard. “Right...Mee-quote-tay. Not cat.”
Aislinn was about to open her mouth to reply to Rising but quickly shut it as N'yami started talking. She turned her attention to the miqo'te and simply sighed. Damned bloody Coerthas.
N'ana Firesong: "What is in this Cold hell ye are dealing with?"
Haila Wetyios: "The reason we're short three people within the Company right now..." was all she'd comment, choosing to allow N'yami to take the floor on this one.
N'yami Synch: "Allagan spider creatures that some crazed scientist made to drain aether from living things...." She paused and thought it over for a moment. "I think that about sums it up." The Seeker shrugged. "I just got pulled into this recently."
Evelyn chuckles to herself. "Ah, are you all going out? I, Evelyn Blazewing, third incarnation of Lord Blazewing the Phoenix, the Eternal Ember, shall accompany you. You said we are headed to Coerthas, is that right, mortal? Fufufu... a phoenix not need worry about the cold. You should be most glad that I'm tagging along! My prowess with fire shall prove most useful to all of you there... i-if you'll have me, I mean." She looked away a bit at her last statement.
Rising Lotus grumbled more as their location was confirmed, shrugging as Riylli glanced at her. "Don't have my damn cold gear with me..gonna be a fun day." she sighed and slumped down a bit in the chair.
After casting an askance look at Evelyn and her declaration, Aislinn murmured almost to herself. "I'll have to grab my bleeding coat before we head out." If Aislinn hated anything, it was the cold.
N'ana Firesong: "Well then meh blade if for ye then. Don't know much of whatever these spiders are but aye am always willing to test meh metal."
Riylli grinned. "Finally, I've been waiting to go after those spiders ever since I joined this group! You can't just lead with that then make me build up some town for moons instead. I'm built for smashing, not building!"
Haila snapped her eyes towards one of the newcomers. "Pride won't do you any good in this, nor recklessness. These things have casters as their primary targets each and every single time we've come across them." she said, immediately sighing afterwards as she raised a hand to her forehead. "It goes without saying that magic should be the very VERY last resort in this expedition you're all about to go." she added, this time glancing at everyone.
Cravendy Hound: “Are ye all ‘earin’ what I’m ‘earin’? Or am I ‘avin’ some kind of...” Cravs shakes her head in confusion at Evelyn’s remarks. But it was all very curious to her, and she found herself wondering about the curious character. “Aye, let’s bring along that one.”
N'yami had a very confused look on her face for a moment but it vanished as soon as it appeared. "Well, I believe Aislinn had a device to help us?" She perked a brow when looking over to the Hyur. "Last time we talked we were goin' to use me as bait for pullin' the creature in while the rest of ya bring it down."
Haila Wetyios: "All of this while keeping the spider as intact as possible. 'Tis all I'd ask to finish cracking the data and communication they all share."
N'ana Firesong: "So we are studying them, not slaying them."
Riylli Aliapoh breathed a sigh of relief that someone else was hearing what Evelyn was saying, and that she had not just gone insane. But she had another concern now, turning to Haila, "Wait, we can't use magic? No one said anythin' about not using magic."
Aislinn nodded to N'yami. "The aether dampener, aye. Did you remember to grab it from your mother's desk?" she asked. "Like I said before it. ..*should* mask a person's aether signature a great deal. But, you can't get something for nothing. In return, it makes using aether far more difficult. Like training with weights on. Should being the operative word. I've tested it out here but it's never really been field tested before. And not against those bioweapons." she added.
N'yami’s ears went down for a moment, that's right she was supposed to grab it. But never fear Whackara was on the case! The carbuncle swatted Yami over the head before opening her mouth to show the object they were talking about. "Oh yea! Gave it to ya to protect." Holding her hand out the carbuncle just dropped it in Yami's hands like it was no big deal. Clearly this wasn't the first time the carbuncle was used for storage.
Cravendy‘s frown deepens at the mention of N’yami being bait. “It sounds like ye ‘ave all the pieces aligned, but that sounds risky. If it looks like yer in trouble, then ye’ll ‘ave to forgive me for trashin’ the enemy.”
"We've lost three people so far, all of them having a specialty somehow tied to conjury or white magic. We can't take extra risks again." Haila paused, turning over to Riylli.
"When the first person went missing, a group of three assembled secretly and went to try and find them without telling anyone... Needless to say, only the one person that wasn't exactly magically inclined came back. Those creatures are an army of machina to say the least."
Evelyn Blazewing sighs. "Fine, mortal. I shall hold my magic unless it is absolutely necessary. You needn't worry regardless, for a phoenix always rises from her ashes!" She struck a small pose, leaning back in her seat for a moment before returning to her usual position. "So we're letting it live? Perhaps it is best I not use my magic after all..." She sighs and shrugs. "I will simply find another way to assist you all, then. I shall exercise extreme caution so you do not worry, viera. Does that help ease your nerves?"
Riylli Aliapoh peaked up from over the back of her couch to listen to Aislinn explain. "Well... I should be able to work with using less aether, but you won't be getting me at my best! I was hoping to show off proper this time too, since no one could see anything during that dodo fight..."
Aislinn nodded in thanks to the carbuncle for remembering. She looked back to N'yami. "Once you're ready, just cuff it to your wrist, the stone and circuitry should do the rest." she once more eyed Evelyn with a wary gaze.
Haila Wetyios: "As long as you keep your own distance, I won't complain." she merely stated with a serious tone, though from her voice, it was clear that she had her own reservations or even personal feelings about this entire case.
Rising Lotus raised her hand "Going with what Cravs said, in case things start to go sour, we ought to have a signal or somethin' to switch from catchin' to smashin' and gettin' outa there."
Aislinn turned her attention to Riylli. "Unfortunately, I only had time to create one prototype." she jerked her chin to the one in N'yami's hands. "The rest of us need to be careful."
Riylli groaned. "Great... Guess I'll just... Play defense, or somethin'..." She muttered, totally pouting over not getting to fight the spiders properly
"Should I put it on now or wait till we get there?" N'yami eyed Riylli for a moment, an actual caster would be better playing bait but the Seeker couldn't bring herself to letting the others getting injured if things went bad.
Aislinn does her best to hold her tongue in the face of such idealistic exuberance. The gravity of the loss of Heartwood members in the face of these bioweapons hadn't truly sunken in for the new recruits. Sometimes experience was the best teacher. She looked to N'yami and took a refocusing breath. "Depends on if you think you're going to need to call upon some aether between now and then."
“Scream once if yer in trouble, twice if yer just foolin’ with us.” Cravs dryly advises N’yami.
"What happens if I do it three times?" N’yami grinned, joking of course and an attempt to lighten the mood. "No worries, if things start goin' bad I'll let ya know guys know."
Evelyn: "Ah, is that what our signal shall be? Primitive and simple, yet effective. The success of our mission is all but assured regardless if we take the necessary precautions."
N'yami nodded. "So." N'yami clipped the item onto her wrist. "Who wants to hold the Carbuncle? If things start goin' bad she'll let ya know." The summon’s ears perked up and pitch black orbs looked around the room to determine who her Coerthas buddy will be.
Evelyn raises her hand enthusiastically. "I shall care for thy familiar, mortal. Choose me, and you shall not regret it."
Cravendy Hound tries to lean into N’yami’s confidence, and tries to tell herself this mission will be smooth sailing. But an ever familiar anxiety sets her heart pumping.  Cravs huffs, and moodily looks to the corner of the table.
"Whackara is connected to me, if I'm in trouble her fur will bristle so just keep an eye on that." The carbuncle jumped down from N'yami's shoulder and went to sit on the arm of the chair where Evelyn was, a paw reached out to rest on the red heads shoulder as if to say 'Buddy'.
Evelyn grinned quietly to herself and chuckled. "The pact is complete, then. I shall guard this one with my life. You needn't worry, I will simply resurrect should anything happen to me. Your safety is all but assured, friend." She reaches a hand out to softly pet the carbuncle.
Rising Lotus "We have somethin' to catch it or keep it too right? Or should we jus' break it's legs an' bring it in?" she crossed her arms and leaned back into her chair. "Granted I don't know anythin' near enough 'bout them as Haila, but I do remember ya sayin' it can call other ones too right? Do we have some way to stop that?"
Haila turned over to Rising, "No ways to disrupt it yet I'm afraid, 'tis one strong signal, but the best would be to drag the straggler you mean to capture as far away as possible before it calls reinforcements."
N'yami hummed in thought for a moment. "Could use wires? A barrier would just be absorbed by the damn thing, but we would need a couple people who would want to volunteer to just jump the damn thing and tie it up."
Aislinn let her gaze drift over to Rising and Cravendy
Evelyn sighed and looked around. "Unfortunately, this vessel's arms are quite frail, otherwise I would love to volunteer... are any mortals willing to take the lead?"
“Seems easier to just break its legs. We won’t be needin’ those to do whatever we need the spider for, right?” Cravendy looks around, suddenly wary of another’s gaze on her. “Jump it. Beat it up. Been there, done that...”
Rising Lotus grimaces "Ugh, alright. I don't wanna see a wave of them things again if I can help it." she glanced at N'yami as she offered her suggestion. "..that sounds like it'd work, sure Cravs is a right fine knot tie-er too. " she looked toward Cravs.
Riylli raised her hand. "I could probably incapacitate it with my magic pretty easy, depending on how strong the thing is. Would give me something to do too..." She said with an overexaggerated sigh
Haila Wetyios: "As long as it gets the job done, I have no quarry with it. Breaking the legs should do the job, but if all else fails, I'll take a broken spider."
"Ah, are you not joining us, mortal? A shame, your apparent experience with these spiders would be quite the help." Evelyn said, turning her gaze to Haila.
Haila Wetyios shook her head. "As much as I wish I could, I have my reasons for not going... 'Tis been by mere coincidence that the spiders didn't pick up on me the other times. But I can't risk a third one. At least not if I want a few plans of my own to work."
N'yami Synch: "So who's ready to go catch us a spider!? That's a dumb question no one really is but hells we need the bloody thing so let's go punch it in the legs."
N'ana Firesong gave a small sigh. "Why spiders" she mumbled.
Cravendy glances back at Rising. “Can’t say I’ve ever kidnapped a spider, but there’s a first for everythin’. But the idea would be the same. Lure it away to some lonely corner, away from pryin’ eyes, and tie it up afore it knows what got ‘im. Or beat it till it’s broken.”
Riylli gave a concerned look to the pirate Roe, unsure if she was joking or not
Rising Lotus: "Well lets play it by ear then. If we have a chance to bind it lets do that, if not we'll smash it's legs off, and as a last case option we'll kill it all together."
Evelyn stands up and strikes a pose with her staff. "Let our operation commence. The Goddess of Victory is on our side, so long as we err on the side of caution. Now, let us show these spiders true despair..." She held her bandaged right arm up to her left eye again, folding her left one across her body. She let out an enthusiastic "Fwahahaha!" and shook her head afterward.
Aislinn nodded and rose to her feet. "Seems like we have a plan in place." Roughly, but it was still a plan. "I'll go grab my bloody coat." she shook her head and retreated briefly back to her quarters.
After the group made the walk through Coerthas back to the area where they knew the spiders would appear, with some grumbling cause of the cold of course, N'yami lead them through the snowy terrain. Stopping in her tracks the Seeker looked around with perked ears. "Where exactly were you all ambushed before? Perhaps that will be the best spot to look for one."
Riylli kicked at the ground below, trying to keep her shivering to a minimum. "...Hate this stupid place... Grounds all frozen... Terrible to work with..." She muttered to herself as the rest of the group did their thing
N'ana: "Aye hope we finish up quickly. As much as aye enjoy mountain trips in Othard this cold is a different story."
Aislinn looked to Rising and Cravendy to answer that question. She hadn't yet ventured out to meet these spiders head on. For obvious reasons. Heartwood still needed at least a semblance of a medical staff until they could get G'lewra and Vanriri back.
Rising Lotus huffed as they exited the cave, rubbing her hands together as she was a tad underdressed. "I think it was a bit more down there, near the bridge right?" she glanced at Cravs, keeping her body moving to build up some heat. It then dawned on her the Cravs was kind of not there at the time, but maybe she knew somehow?
Evelyn shivered quietly, holding Whackara in her arms. "F-Fufufu... this cold is n-nothing... you m-mortals always complain about the silliest things..." she posed again in her usual fashion.
Cravendy feels her gut sink as she remembers a time when...it was before she woke up, and yet. She groans, but answers to the best of her ability. “Yeah, I remember it was by that hill, and we crossed a bridge at some point. Over there?” Cravs points down south.
N'yami Synch: "Works for me." She offered a shrug and just started walking down the path, they'd eventually run into the blasted thing right? That's how it usually worked from what she heard. "Time to give this damsel-in-distress thing a try I suppose."
"I-If these things go after magic users, how 'bout we just start channelling and wait for it to show up?" Riylli offered, getting sick of standing in one place freezing her tail off
Cravendy lightly elbows Evelyn as she passes her. “Phoenix-lass, right? Ye think ye can ‘eat up the poor sods who’re freezin’ their arses off?”
Rising Lotus looks at the river over the hill. "This is lookin' familiar, bridge ain't too far from here." she pointed across it. "They all came from the other side of it, and we fell back to the bridge." she pointed to the left down the path.
Aislinn heard Cravendy and looked over her shoulder. "I'm good. No need to light me up or anything."
Evelyn Blazewing 's eyes open wide. "Sh-Share my warmth? With... e-everyone? F-Fwahaha, I certainly would if it were possible. Touching a mere mortal with my body temperature s-so high would incinerate them to mere ashes!" she quietly mumbled to herself. "B-Besides, I'm kinda using it right now..."
Cravendy nods to Rising’s statement. “Some of ‘em were underneath the snow too, so watch where ye step.”
Aislinn took a few steps back at that. "Great." she muttered as she peered down at the frozen ground around them.
N'ana Firesong: "Ye seem ye can mix a drink right now, Phoenix."
Evelyn: "I would be happy to mix you a drink were now a good time, mortal. Ask when we return home and I shall happily oblige."
N'yami looked around for a moment as they paused. "We'll stick around somewhere safe so the rest of ya have a place to hide while I drag the damn thing out." The Seeker pointed over at the boulder sticking out of the ground. "Go hide over there while I call it out. Rising, and Cravs, get ready to launch yerself at it once it comes out."
Rising Lotus: "Aye, pulled...uh.. someone off one before it got her, then it called it's friends." she tapped her boots on the ground to shake some snow out of her sandals.
Cravendy: “Aye. Come on Rising, we got a boulder to snoop behind.” She starts to walk over.
Heartwood runs into another RP FC also RPing (Riylli Aliapoh) (feels like two rival gangs are passing) (Aislinn North) ((Throwdown)) (Haila Wetyios) Oh snap)) (Rising Lotus) We have to intimidate them, everyone make yourselfs big)) (Cravendy Hound) OH?? )) (N'yami Synch) PUFF OUT)) (N'yami Synch) I think we win)) (Cravendy Hound) omg haha )) (Riylli Aliapoh) (as big as you can get) (N'yami Synch) Lol one of them is a friend of my so I whispered yelled at him to get out of my swamp xD))
Rising Lotus nodded, pumping herself up before tailing behind Cravs, drawing her spear on the way.
"I can help too y'know..." Riylli muttered as she stomped off to hide behind the boulder
Aislinn murmured to N'yami as she gestured to the device on the miqo'te's wrist. "If your plan is to take that off to lure a spider, I'd suggest snapping it right back on the moment you get one on your trail. As it is we're going to have a hell of a time shutting it up before it calls any others." she nodded. "Watch yourself, aye?"
Cravendy ducks behind the boulder and peeks out, as sneakily as she can manage. But she’s half-distracted by Rising, who to her...does not look dressed for success, in this weather. “Nophica’s teats, ye askin’ to catch a cold again?!” She harshly whispers.
N'yami Synch: "Cravs and Rising, pull Riylli with ya when the thing comes out, the faster we bring the thing down the better." The Seeker looked over to Aislinn and offered a short nod. "I can defend myself pretty well, if you know someone else needs it more I'll be fine without it."
Riylli's ears perked up, her pouting interrupted. "Wait, me? I mean, yeah! The grounds a bit frozen, but I'm sure it'll be fine" She finished with a confident nod, back to her usual self
Rising Lotus was peeking around the other side of the rock, spearing humming away as they waited. "I'll be fine, been through here lots of times dressed like this. Build's character." she shivered a bit as she said the last part. " 'sides fightin' will keep me plenty warm."
Aislinn shook her head and snorted. "I'm not playing the lottery like that. You're going after the spider, you take it. I'm just saying." she turned and went to stand with the others.
Riylli kicks a bit off snow onto Rising's exposed toes. "Builds hypothermia is what it does. How are you gonna fight when you're frozen to the ground?"
Cravendy: “Might be awhile ‘fore we’re fightin’.” Cravs looks back at N’yami and watches the miqo’te like a hawk. Her breath coming out in chilly plumes, she mumbles something under her breath. “Feh, character...Personally, I’m done buildin’ anymore of that.”
N'ana Firesong keeps a watchful eye over her surroundings.
N'yami unhooked the device from her arm for a moment, and that's when the rest of the group would feel a surge of aether crash over them. The group would feel a wide range of emotions hit them, the strongest one they felt would send a warmth through their cold bodies. Raising her hand in the air the Seeker summoned a ball of aether and shot it off in the air, one after the other like a show of fireworks and each one burst in the sky. Red aether mixed into the white winds that were carried off to call upon the creature they were looking for and with how much the Seeker was giving off did the group hear an echoing screech off in the distance. Those who had met the creatures would know the sound all too well, it was coming.
N'ana Firesong knelt over, feeling the warmth take over her body and shivered. "Thralls balls!"
Rising Lotus shot Riylli a glare, flinging the snow off her foot, about to retaliate before N'yami started and she focused up, tightening her grip on her spear. She grit her teeth as they had garnered hopefully only one's attention.
Evelyn recoils a bit, reeling from the emotional surge she just felt. She then turns her attention to the sky, and back to N'yami. "An excellent show, mortal, but will it do the tri-" She's cut off by the screeching, which causes her to smirk. "Fufufu... it seems your ploy worked. Everyone, ready yourselves. Our enemy will be upon us soon." She mumbled to herself again. "I-I think... that's our enemy..."
Aislinn stumbled back as the aetheric emotions hit her, the warmth flowing into her body triggering a sense of alarm. No. Not now. But it soon passes as she realized it was only N'yami and not herself. She breathed and tried to shake off the feeling. "That'll get them if nothing else." she said low, her voice wavering slightly.
Riylli glances over to Evelyn. "Hey, crazy lady, how hot can that fire of yours get? Y'think you can thaw the earth a bit for me when we jump out?"
Cravendy grunts as she weathers the wave of aether, sets her jaw as foreign emotions flow through. When it passes, she finally takes a gasp of air. Without knowing it, Cravs had been holding her breath. But she could not breathe easy, not yet. They were coming.
Evelyn glares at Riylli. "I am not crazy, mortal. My flames are the hottest in the realm. I would be more than happy to assist you, however." She sighed.  "So, my talents shall simply be used to thaw the earth? Fine, fine... I came here to offer my assistance, after all."
The sound of heavy footsteps could be heard as the beast came crashing through the snowy plains, this one was the perfect size to carry someone off and with how much aether it detected it seemed determined to catch whatever was creating it. At the last possible second N'yami slapped the device onto her wrist again to dampen her aether, and that's when the Crawler stopped in front of her. The familiar whirring noise was heard as it scanned the Seeker for the aether source.
Aislinn North From her hiding place behind the boulder, Aislinn tensely watched, her breath trapped in her lungs. She sincerely hoped her device wouldn't fail now, of all times.
Cravendy‘s eyes widen at the sight of the machine, but any hesitation is quickly pushed down. Cravs shuffles over the boulder and charges at her target, hoping to knock it off balance with a low blow to one of its many legs.
Rising Lotus "Great, a big one..." she hopped out from her hiding place and charged forward, taking a great big swipe at it's front left leg as she got in range.
Riylli Aliapoh hopped up onto the rock, shouting out to Evelyn. "Time to shine, crazy phoenix lady! Help me get the earth under it's legs!" She commanded, and began to swirl aether around her as she commanded the earth to reach out and swallow up the spiders legs, though as she suspected the ice made it difficult to manage. However, with Evelyn's help…
N'ana Firesong: "Take out it's eye!"
Evelyn sighs and smiles, bringing her rod close to her. "Fufufu... behold mortals, the purest of flames, the hottest of cinders! This is a gift from Lord Blazewing himself! To ash do we fall, and from ash do we rise... now!" *she launches a small fireball, which then explodes into a larger flame that consumes the ground around the spider. "Hell's Maw!"
Aislinn reached into her coat, white-knuckles wrapping around the grip of her pistol as the others charged. She wouldn't use her aether but she would shoot if things began to take a dire turn. For now, she watched and waited, fighting the frustration that rose in her.
Despite the several attacks aimed at the spider, it seemed as only a selected few even had an effect on it. Riylli's rocks for once, managed to at least ground it on the spot. It's metal legs though, were stronger than the ones that they'd faced before, that much was clear from the fact that it's hindleg barely took any damage from Rising's attack. The edges of it's fleshy limbs suffering very slight charring as it detected the aether sources around it. The fire spell becoming it's first target as it had been the biggest display of aether out of all of them, with the earth rocks being a close second.
Aislinn North can see where this is going and cursed harshly under her breath. The weapon was already assessing and zeroing in on those who had created a display of aether. "Get ready to scatter." she warned.
Finishing it's scans of it's primary targets as well as potential threats, the mechanical spider made several whirring sounds, had it been a smaller one, it would have surely attempted to call for backups already. This one though, was big enough to attempt it's own attacks. Lifting the few legs that weren't trapped in stone, it attempted to free it's other legs as it hurled rocks around at the closest people within it's range whilst smaller spiders dropped off the big one, rushing at the people in the back.
N'yami watched as the crowd charged at the Crawler and watched the chaos start to form, the Seeker waited for the right time to interfere and if needed she would join the battle. Her ruby gaze kept flicking down to the device on her wrist, debating to take it off to act as bait again, that's why she was here right?
Riylli pumped more aether into her spell, refusing to allow the spider freedom so long as she could help it. "Gonna need you guys to keep those things off me! Can't exactly multitask right now!" She called to whoever might be able to help
Ready for it, Aislinn dashed out from behind the boulder as the smaller spiders charged toward them. She fired off a few shots as she went, hoping to pick a couple off before they swarmed the others.
Rising Lotus managed to dodge the stones that were throw at her, grunting and gripping her spear tightly. With a mighty shout she jabbed the tip of her spear right between where the leg meets the body, twisting and pushing open a gap towars the now exposed and vulnerable shoulder mechanics! If someone could aim several shots in there it would sure do a lot of damage!
Cravendy Hound: “Umf! Shit, thing’s built like a brick ‘ouse!” Why did she think that tackling a thing made of solid metal was a good idea to begin with? Now her shoulder felt all kinds of wrong. She rolls to dodge the flurry of rocks and, out of the corner of her eye, she sees the smaller spiders rush at the party’s backline. A bitter cocktail of anger and anxiety sets her heart alight. Not on her watch!
Cravendy grins when Rising serves her an opening on a silver platter. “Thank ye, flower. Now!” She whips her gun out and sends a flurry of shots aimed directly at the exposed circuitry.
N'ana stabbed at the smaller spiders around her. slashing and kicking the ones too close to her.
Evelyn targets the small spiders approaching her, readying another area fire spell. Without giving a small speech this time, she simply readies and casts another area fire spell, hoping to get rid of the smaller spiders coming after her. After launching her attack, she mutters "Calamity Blaze." and strikes a pose.
Relatively assured that she hadn't made herself a target for the smaller spiders, Aislinn continued to fire off shots to drop the bastards before they could reach the ones casting aether about with abandon, pausing only for the scant seconds it took her to reload. Her precision as a sharpshooter on display, she rarely seemed to miss her marks.
Riylli grit her teeth, trying to hold on as the spider did everything it could to free itself from it's bindings. "I ain't gonna be able to hold much longer! Do whatever it is you gotta do, and do it fast!" She called out to the front lines, swearing under her breath. "'Take it alive' huh? Easy to say when you aren't the one holding the damned thing..." She mutters angrily, before pumping another dose of aether into the earthen shackles
Rising Lotus grinned as Cravs fired several shots into the hole she made, twisting her body around to try and spear the other front leg, aiming for the first joint from it's body and thrusting hard, hopefully she'd continued to have good results aiming for those points compared to hacking and slashing
Cravendy feels that telltale burn of combat. Of blood boiling, of time slowing. Given her proximity to the large machine, Cravs decides to try to grab hold of another leg and directly press the end of her gun at its joint. Squeeze, and fire.
The onslaught of attacks took it's toll, for a moment it seemed that the large spider had underestimated it's targets. Such was the issue of programming it's priorities. The leg that Rising and Cravs had worked together to damage caused several circuits to go haywire. The spider had to pause for a moment as the rest of it's legs too, started taking damage from the shots, the spears and the rocks keeping it grounded all causing damage beyond acceptable parameters, the creature attempted to step back to no avail, it's smaller spiders being taken one after the other with the group work from everyone attacking it. Upon finishing it's damage calculations, it buckled down, almost compacting part of it's body for a moment as it emitted a deafening sound alongside static that was nearly palpable in the air. It wouldn't damage it's opponents as much as it would deafen them briefly, but it was for sure calling for nearby backups.
Riylli just kept channeling really. Nothing to see here. She wasn't getting tired or anything. It's fine. All fine.
Cravendy recoils at the explosive sound blaring right next to her ears. She searches for the source of the sound but can’t quite focus with this ringing in her head, so instead she opts to continue her assault. Cravs aims her gun at the spider’s chassis and fires several times. If it’s broken, the racket’ll stop, right?
N'ana shook her head feeling a bit dizzy and off balance from the noise. She put the sword inside its holdster and then drew it with a blinding light of power on one of the spiders back legs.
Aislinn staggered to the side and clapped a free hand over one ear as the blaring beacon went off. Damn it all. That thing simply needed to -die-. Gritting her teeth against the painful noise, she did her best to keep watch on the casters, and pick off any of the smaller spiders that still remained. "Someone shut it up, fast!" her words barely heard over the blaring siren.
Rising Lotus braced herself as the screech blared, bracing herself while she gazed over the ugly thing. Things usually make sound from their mouths, so she thrusted right under it's glowing eye, hoping that was where it would be? If it had one?
N'yami Synch placed her hands over her ears as the creature called out for help. Why did it need to be so loud? "Take it down now! We need to get out of here fast before the backup arrives!"
Riylli Aliapoh huffed, feeling neglected out there in the backlines, watching everyone else do cool stuff. She was not one to enjoy taking the support role, and suddenly a very stupid idea dawned on her. She grinned, "Alright, time to end this!" She called out, suddenly thrusting her arms out to the sides and pumping in every last bit of her aether, the earthen shackles that had been binding the creatures legs suddenly flying out in opposite directions, ripping the spiders legs out with them
Evelyn Blazewing covered her ears and crouched down in recoil from the harsh noise the spider emitted. "I-It's worse than the wails of the damned... shut up!" She stood up, braced herself, and fired a ball of flame at the mechanical arachnid, yelling out "Flames of Ifrit!" as she did.
Cravendy Hound brings her arms up in time to guard herself against a shower of earth and ice. “By the godsdamned Navigator! Warn me next time ye use yer magic!” But, seeing as the spider was now rendered legless by Riylli’s efforts, it seemed a good opportunity to grab and go. Cravs stumbles to the other end of the machine and tries to lift it. They had to get this thing, and themselves, out of here fast.
While incredibly risky and stupid, Riylli's idea worked, the sudden pull from the rocks alongside it's already damaged legs nearly ripped all of them off on the spot. Only one leg remaining, which was the one N'ana kept attacking as the blasted thing started to squirm as much as it could. Several smaller spiders dropped off it's insides, clearly confused as the signal it was sending out to them was not going off well thanks to the damage caused by Rising and Crav's shots.
N'yami bolted towards the giant spider and went to lift it with Cravs. "Let's go go go." The carbuncle grew in size to be big enough to ride and trotted up to Riylli incase she needed to be carried home. "Those who can lift get over here."
The large spider was rendered defenseless, and most of all, it was half intact.
Riylli fell to her knees, aether spent and body exhausted. She grit her teeth and picked herself back up, using her staff to keep her balance as she didn't want people seeing how wiped out she was. "What else could 'time to end this' mean!?" Riylli shot back to Cravs, before carefully trying to crawl her way off the boulder she was dramatically perched on. Maybe exhausting herself right before it was time to run... was not the best plan
Rising pulled her spear back just in time to watch Riylli pull it's legs off like a child would do to a bug, and probably Riylli to a bug too honestly. Quickly returning her spear to her back, she made her way to the front, squatting down and preparing to lift it with the others.
As the limbs come off the spider in a mighty pull of earth, Aislinn wasted no time rushing towards the downed bioweapon, taking out the small spiders that wandered around in confusion. "Alright. N'yami's right. Let's take it and run." she holstered her weapon and made ready to lift along with the others.
Evelyn applauded Riylli's display, a proud smile on her face. "Excellent, truly excellent work, mortal. Your prowess with the earth is quite remarkable..."
Cravendy grumbles something under her breath about being more specific, that “time to end this” should clearly state -how- as well. But it was all bullshit and Cravs knew it - couldn’t expect people to say all that in the heat of the battle. Didn’t stop her from complaining the whole way back though.
Riylli gave a tired grin, always ready to accept some praise. "Best geomancer in eorzea, you can bet on it! You were a big help with that fire though. Couldn't have done it without ya." She said with a nod, before noticing the large carbuncle seemingly waiting for her to pass out. "Oh, hey... you. You offering a ride?" She asked, giving a shrug as she hopped on and did her best not to look so relieved.
As Heartwood managed to take the giant Crawler back, hopefully Haila was fine with the size of it, the group successfully completed their mission and even managed to escape the backup before they showed up but now the real question. How are they going to get it through the door?

Marry Me, Bunny | Tamaki Amajiki x Reader
AN: Hiya! This was a request from @sweetlikepeppermints ! I hope you like this, love! Sidenote: I’ve been having way too much fun with these covers >.< Pronouns used: She/her Length: 1.8k
Summary: Tamaki’s been trying to propose to you for a while now! He finally gets his chance
Your Name: (y/f/n) - Aye soon to be (f/n) Amajiki Quirk: (y/q) Age: 24
“(f/n)… y-you’re the best th- no. B-Bunny, I l-love you s-so much and- no.” Tamaki sighed, flopping down onto the couch. His indigo eyes stared up at the white ceiling as he clenched his fists. Tamaki was rehearsing his proposal to his lovely girlfriend, (f/n). The only problem was, Tamaki was too shy. He wasn’t even the one to ask her out to begin with! She asked him out on a date, then asked him to be her boyfriend. So, how was he possibly going to ask her to marry him!?
Both Nejire and Mirio did their best to convince him that (f/n) wouldn’t say no, but how could they be sure? They couldn’t, unless (f/n) told him she would want to marry him. What if (f/n) lied!? What if she lied so Nejire and Mirio wouldn’t feel bad or something?
Just the simple thought alone caused him immense inner turmoil. It messed with his head, nerves, and the very little confidence he’d mustered up. The plan was to take (f/n) out on a cute little date, first to her favorite cafe, then out to the aquarium, then dinner, then finally propose to her at home! Ideally, he would’ve liked to propose to her at the restaurant, but his anxiety wouldn’t let him and he’d make a bigger fool of himself than he already did.
Tamaki frowned a little, would (f/n) want to be proposed to in front of a crowd? Would she want a husband who was more confident? Tamaki would barely handle kissing her on the cheek in public and they’d been dating for well over four years, almost going on five in about three months.
Yes, (f/n) was dating him, but they were at the stage where all (f/n) needed to do to get rid of him was to tell him. If they got married, she’d need to go through this whole divorce process, do all the paperwork, and find their attorneys. Would he really want to do that to her? Would he really want to put her through that? He was surprised she hadn’t gotten bored of him, yet. Would that last forever? He sure hoped it would.
Tamaki was so madly in love with (f/n). With all of his heart. She was his rock, she was his sun, she was his determination, passion, drive, and reason. She was the reason he was a hero, she was the reason he put himself out there, she was the reason he was who he was. The powerful and mighty Suneater, the number 4 ranked pro hero.
Tamaki was nothing without his (f/n) and he happily admitted it. So, to him, marriage was the next step he would blindly take, knowing (f/n) would be by his side. But, would she? Would she truly be ok with someone like him? Someone so meek and timid, someone who could barely handle affection behind closed doors, let alone in public. There were so many better options… So why him?
Sitting up, Tamaki sighed. All of these negative thoughts weren’t helping his case. If he wanted to propose to (f/n), he’d need to be confident. (f/n) had been with him for almost five years now. She had chosen him, out of all her friends and all the other people he thought she’d been better with. She had chosen him and was clearly happy with him. So, why was he so scared? He couldn’t be. He had to be confident, he had to push himself out of his comfort zone, all for his beautiful, bunny.
***
“Hey, Tama!” (f/n) greeted him with a rather excited tone. She wrapped her arms around his torso, nuzzling her face into his chest.
“H-Hey, bunny.” His arms fell around her, pulling her into him tightly. He placed a small kiss on the top of her head as his hands raked through her (h/l) (h/c) locks. “Ready?” She nodded and looked up at him with a big smile.
“I am!” Grabbing her (purse/bag), she shut her apartment door and locked it. The first place they went to was (fav cafe) so (f/n) could get her favorite beverage, (f/b). Once they were done, they walked towards the aquarium. “Where are we headed, Tama?”
“It’s a surprise.” He said, a slight smile on his lips. (f/n) only nodded, her hand tightening around his as they walked and sipped their drinks.
**
They had a comfortable conversation until they arrived at the next location. He was both relieved and overjoyed to see how excited (f/n) was when she saw the aquarium in the distance and Tamaki confirmed that’s where they were going.
As they walked through the entire aquarium, visiting all the exhibits and whatnot, Tamaki couldn’t help but feel a sense of bliss and contentment at seeing his girlfriend’s happy face and expressions.
“Tama! Look!” She giggled, running ahead of him. Her hand slipped from his as she placed them on the glass, eyes filled with wonder and admiration. There was a large tank that had small sharks, different schools of saltwater fish, and even some manta rays. Her eyes watched as a manta ray swam towards her, floating above and exposing its belly to her as it swam by. “Oh! He’s so cute!” She giggled.
Tamaki smiled as he followed behind her, standing right next to her. His indigo eyes scanned her features, her bright smile, and eyes filled with excitement. It felt great knowing he was the reason, someone, as amazing as she had that big of a smile.
In the distance, Tamaki saw a (fish/marine mammal you like) plushie. It was medium-sized and he knew (f/n) liked that specific fish because of the (reason you like said fishie/mammal). While (f/n) was busy watching the fish swim around the tank, Tamaki slipped away and quickly bought the little stuffed animal for her.
Tamaki came up behind her and brought the plushie down in front of her. Her eyes widened as her fingers gently wrapped around it.
“T-Tama! Th-this is so freaking cute! Thank you!” She turned around and wrapped her arms around his waist and hugged him tightly. His cheeks flushed a deep red, but a soft smile appeared on his lips and hugged back.
“An-anything for you, B-Bunny.” (f/n) held the plushie close to her chest the entire time they were at the aquarium. She deemed it her favorite plushie it and had named it (p/n). The next location was the restaurant. Tamaki had taken her to her favorite restaurant, (r/n).
“This is super nice, Tamaki. You must’ve really missed me.” (f/n) giggled. It was true, she and Tamaki had been apart for a few days due to how busy he was, but that wasn’t the only reason. Tamaki looked down, his mind returning to the ring in his pocket. It felt so heavy and overbearing, but he tried his best to push it out of his head. He was nervous all day and (f/n) had noticed, but she knew how he was. So, she gave him the opportunity to come to her when he was ready to talk about it.
That’s what he loved most about her. She never pushed him out of his comfort zone, she never forced him to talk about his feelings, and she always supported him no matter what. She was caring and loving and she never took advantage of him.
The dinner went smoothly, (f/n) had ordered her favorite (f/f) and Tamaki had ordered his. The two had a rather pleasant date, before they were headed home. Now was when the nerves kicked in. He was about to propose… but how?!
“Want to have a movie night? Binge watch a bunch of movies?”
“O-o-ok.” He answered, looking away. (f/n) knew something was wrong, but she didn’t press the issue further.
“What movie, baby?”
“Wh-whatever y-y-you w-want.” He mentally cursed at himself for being so ridiculously shy and cowardice.
“How about we watch… (f/m)?” Tamaki only nodded, unable to speak. (f/n) grabbed some snacks, even though they were full, in case they wanted some later on. While she was gathering her stuff, Tamaki was gathering up the courage to finally ask her the question. His mind was in a panic, the butterflies in his stomach were also in a panic, his body was shaking, and it was the most uncomfortable feeling and he really didn’t like it. “Ready?” (f/n) asked, sitting down next to him with all her junk food sprawled out on the large couch. As she pulled the covers up, Tamaki stood, making her eyes follow his figure. “You ok, baby? What’s wrong?”
Tamaki stood in front of her, gazing down at his beautiful girlfriend. She looked so beautiful today and even now, she was glowing. He was so lucky to have her and he only wished she knew.
On the other hand, (f/n) was in a full-blown panic. Tamaki was acting extremely strange all day. Did he want to break up with her? Did she do something? Did she hurt his feeling? She was mentally trying to prepare herself for any of these possibilities, but her heart stopped when he got down on one knee and gently took her left hand. In this other hand, he had a small velvety black box, with a bright diamond ring.
It was beautiful, the band was lined with gems, the biggest one in the center sparkling and winking at (f/n). Tamaki was blushing heavily, but he was determined to do this. He was Suneater and he wasn’t scared to ask his girlfriend to marry him.
“(y/f/n). We’ve been together for four years, almost five. You’ve always been by my side no matter what. You’ve always encouraged me, supported me, and loved me regardless of all my flaws. I… I know I’m shy and I know I get embarrassed easily but I want you to know, bunny, I love you. I love you so much. You’re my entire world, you’re my moon and my stars, you’re my sun, my universe. You’re my reason for being a hero. You make me a better person, bunny. You’re my drive, my passion, my determination, my will to continue. I want to be a hero for you. I want to be a hero that you’ll be proud of. So (f/n), will you marry me?”
He didn’t stutter, not once. (f/n)’s heart melted at the determination in his eyes. This is one of the times (f/n) could see just how confident Tamaki could be and she loved it. Her eyes were wide as she let every single word, every single syllable, sink in. Unable to speak, she just nodded rapidly. He slid the ring onto her finger and pulled her towards him, placing a kiss on her lips. It was soft, gentle, and loving. (f/n) giggled, her hand meeting his cheek.
“I love you so much, Tamaki,” She whispered, pressing another kiss to his lips. “Or should I say,” She winked. “Mr. Amajiki?” He couldn’t help the laugh that escaped his lips.
“I love you too, Mrs. Amajiki.”

Black Clover matchup for @nakunakunomi
Tumblr media
Matchup for me :D No gender preferences I am a biromantic ace.
Your age: 24
Your general appearance - most striking features, your fashion style, etc.
Answer: Chubby mermaid lol. Long curly hair almost all the way down my back. Red at the moment, but I’ve had all colors of the rainbow. Ears pierced multiple times and a septum ring whenever I leave the house. My general style is comfy alternative, loads of black, boots and ripped jeans but baggy shirts and sweaters. I don’t like drawing much attention to my chest because my boobs are a very prominent feature. Hourglass figure with extra minutes: so there’s boobs and ass but also a tummy and such. I have dimples when I laugh and a whole bunch of moles over my body. I like a killer liner and mascara but don’t necessary wear makeup every day. I like 4 tattoos and waiting for that fifth one.
Your MBTI, western zodiac chart, etc.
Answer: INFP (mediator), Scorpio sun, Libra moon, Pisces ascending. Year of the rat. I’d say my MBTI type is pretty accurate and while I don’t have many of the bitchy traits often assigned to Scorpios, I do have some of the passion towards things I care about and a generally jealous and stubborn personality.
Your personality, how you perceive yourself and how people around you perceive you.*
Your hobbies, interests, life goals etc.*
Answer: Stubbornness and some jealousy (that is always internalized) are my worst traits. I lack self-esteem and confidence and get anxious in new situations. Once I am around people I trust I blossom open and become more giggly (lame jokes and such) my humor is about 50% puns and 50% sarcasm. I am quick-witted with ‘mean’ remarks but I will never intend to offend or cause harm to anyone. Tough exterior comes with a soft interior. I tend to overthink and worry a lot and will usually put a friend’s needs above mine. I often have people coming to me for advice or to help them calm down. I will be honest in the softest way possible, even if the things I need to say aren’t necessarily nice. I want my friends to flourish. I get easily distracted by cute things and can really enjoy beautiful sights, nice food, good company… i am heavily introverted but I do need the handful of people I care about to flourish myself.
I accumulate facts and know loads of small things about a lot of things. I like adding in fun facts every now and then but sometimes I come across as a know-it-all and then I will get really self-conscious about it. I either talk up a storm nonstop or turn into myself and get really really quiet.
Your favorites, likes, dislikes, pet peeves, fears.*
Answer: anything creative: reading and writing, drawing (although I’m terrible at it), pixel art. Singing, making music, playing instruments, DIYing things. I am quite good with makeup and wigs, and I cosplay but the sewing I still struggle with. I love acting and gaming as well although I don’t spend that much time on them.
I am super heavily interested in true crime, cases, and the psychology of murderers and such. I tend to get overexcited talking about such cases, never celebrating violence, but just being very fascinated by what a human brain can do. I also just really love riddles, mysteries, and solving them.
I’d love to become a teacher or a professional dog trainer. I love animals more than I love people and if I could work with dogs every day of my life that’d be amazing. An unrealistic goal would be to sing for a living, or do musicals. But I don’t think that’s ever gonna happen.
Any additional info you would like to share, fun facts, etc.
Answer: food! Mainly Asian dishes (from all of Asia) and pastas. I love cooking and experimenting in the kitchen and trying out new things to taste. I’m vegetarian but not vegan and I will try everything that’s not meat or fish at least once! I love all kinds of animals, not only your average pets. I will also go pet the cows, and in the zoo you’ll have to drag me away by my ankles from the reptilians and the aquarium. I am fascinated by them and I love them. I love plants and flowers, and if you’d let me be, Id have a small jungle in my house with all kinds of plants and animals. I just love taking care of them, talking to them…
I dislike arrogant people, people who are rude against serving staff. I dislike impoliteness and laziness in the sense that other people are suffering from your lack of work. If I am in a group project I will never procrastinate because it can drag the whole group down, it’s okay to be lazy if it only impacts yourself.
I am afraid of loneliness and the fact that everyone I know just pretends to like me while talking behind my back and secretly hating me. I am not easily startled by monsters, animals, and such, but I do get a little paranoid if I have to walk in the street in the middle of the night. (a side effect from the true-crime consumption)
Answer: I think I added most things in the other walls of text (sorry they are so long). But when it comes to relationship and goals around that there are these things that I think are most important:
Love language is mostly quality time and words of affirmation, and that’s what I like too, as well as soft PDA and affections: cuddles, kisses, hand holding… I like spending time together, and even more so I like actually doing things together: sharing hobbies, going out, dates, dinners, walks, adventures, travels… all the things! :hellmo:
Patience, because I have some anxiety issues as well as fear of commitment. I will definitely need some reassurance. Also consent is the sexiest thing in the world, and that’s coming from an ace person.
Honesty, liars are out. I have a lot of trouble trusting again once there has been a breach of trust. White lies for surprises and such is one thing, but any intentional lying in order to avoid confrontation is an absolute dealbreaker.
I match you with...
Dorothy Unsworth!
Tumblr media
Despite her being asleep a lot of the time, Dorothy notices more than she lets on. She can see straight through the front someone is putting up and see what they are really feeling. This really helps in letting her support you, who is always supporting others. She’ll remind you that sometimes you need to take a break or that you need to focus on yourself instead of others. With her infectious smile and her own absurd sense of humour, she’ll do her best to cheer you up, or at least to distract you from whatever is bothering you.
Dorothy is very patient and has no rush with any relationship. Everything has its own time and waiting for that time to come it part of the fun, right? She’s also very understanding of your anxiety and is able to adjust her energy to the situation, keeping it low when you need comfort and reassurance, and going straight back to high when you’re feeling better and just want to have some fun.
Dorothy may seem very cute and girly, but she is interested in true crime as much as you are. The gruesome details of a case are not wasted on her and she will gladly talk with you about these cases. In her time as a magic knight she has seen her own fair share of true crime as well and she will gladly share anything that’s not confidential or dangerous.
Her love languages are physical touch and words of affirmation. Not a day will go by where Dorothy won’t hug you from behind, kiss you between your shoulder blades and tell you she loves you. She loves loving you and making you feel loved. When she’s in love, keeping her lover safe, emotionally and physically, is her number one priority. She won’t give you even a second to doubt her love for you whenever you’re together. She’s very conscious of your boundaries and makes sure to not cross them.
Not a single lie will leave her mouth, unless as a joke, which will be very clear when she tells it. She is a knight, an enforcer of justice and peace, and lies are not in her book. Teasing, however, very much is, though she prefers to tease you with truths instead of with jokes. If there’s truth to the teasing, it’s just that much more effective.
You want this small strong captain to be putty in your hands? Cook for her, or cook with her. Dorothy greatly enjoys the good things in life and food is definitely on her list of good things. Her preference is mostly sweets, but she knows she needs to eat healthy food as well and she’s not picky when it comes to her dinner. The only need she has is that it tastes good, and that’s something you with your amazing culinary skills can definitely provide!

No.6 - Children of the Sea
Happy Holidays and an awesome New Year, @aoicanvas! I really hope you enjoy this fic! It’s me, @glorifiedscapegoat, and I’m really excited to share this with you. The concept I had kept giving me ideas, so I found myself just writing and writing for a while, and before I knew it the word count was as high as it was. I hope that’s all right!
“The sea, once it casts its spell, holds one in its net of wonder forever.” — Jacques Cousteau
“Here’s your turbo,” Safu declared, sitting down opposite Shion at the booth. They were at their favorite café on the other side of Kronos, perched at one of the large window-seats overlooking the bay.
It was one of Shion’s favorite places, simply for its amazing view of the ocean. The sapphire blue waves lapped against the edge of the pier, the shush-shush sound of the ocean sending comforting prickles down his spine. During the early morning hours, the sunlight glistened across the smooth surface, the pale blue sky streaked with pale pinks and vibrant oranges.
“Oh,” Shion said in surprise as Safu slid the green foam cup across the table toward him. “Thank you. I ordered a decaf, though.”
“I canceled it. You looked like you could use the caffeine.”
Shion exhaled through his nose, knowing it wouldn’t do him any good to argue.  He thanked Safu, popped back the heat-saver from the plastic cover, then took a hesitant sip of the coffee. Safu had doused it with enough creamer and granulated sugar to keep the bitter bite of the espresso from stinging his tongue, but Shion could still feel the caffeine buzzing through him.
“Speaking of caffeine,” Safu said, taking a sip of her own coffee. Having been friends for as long as they had, Shion knew that Safu took her coffee as black as the night sky in the middle of the city, devoid of stars due to the constant streaks of artificial lighting. Shion’s nose wrinkled just thinking about it. He’d never been able to get past the bitterness of the coffee beans. “You might want to bring one to go once you finish that one. Don’t you have the new wave of summer interns starting today?”
Shion exhaled, all traces of his previous good mood fluttering out the door. “Don’t remind me.”
Summers were a difficult time for the West Block Aquarium and, more importantly, its staff. Kronos was a buzzing tourist town, and the summer months brought about college students, wealthy benefactors, and worst of all, summer interns.
“Poor thing,” Safu remarked, taking another sip of her coffee. “Well, maybe it won’t be so bad. Who knows? The interns this year could be… delightful.”
They both shuddered in unison. Shion and Safu had been friends since they were little—Grade 1, to be exact, after Safu got in trouble for punching two boys in the face who called Shion “girly” for his pretty white hair—and both had gone on to pursue careers where interns came and went through a constant revolving door.
Though Shion had obtained full-time employment as a pseudo marine biologist at the West Block Aquarium, Safu had went on to pursue a medical degree working alongside children. Her talent rested with biology (of the mammalian variety, not the aquatic), but despite the clear differences in their professions, Shion and Safu shared one similar headache: summer interns.
“So, how’s your mom doing?” Safu asked.
“She’s all right,” Shion replied. “Just getting ready for the summer rush. Tourists and all that.”
“She’s a saint.” Safu lifted her coffee cup with a solemn expression. “I don’t know how I would have gotten through my undergraduate without the croissants she sent in her care packages.”
Shion huffed out a laugh and took another sip of his coffee. He could already feel the caffeine working its way through his veins.
He allowed a bit of silence to fall around him, the only reprieve he’d get today. As soon as he left for work in an hour, his day would be consumed with learning the group dynamic in this summer’s early wave of interns, squeezing work in between answering questions for the flood of customers arriving for the first day of the summer season, and banging his head against the glass walls of the tanks he was in charge of maintaining.
Shion felt something soft rest on top of his head. He glanced up to see Safu tapping her fingers against his temple, softly going, “pomf” to herself.
He leaned back out of reach, fighting back a smile. “What are you doing?”
“Trying to figure out where I can purchase a brush strong enough to tame that mop of yours.” Safu took her hand back, flashing a smile. “It’s such a pretty color, and it’s a shame it just sticks up all over the place.”
“Well, it’s not my fault. I spend most of the time in the water. It’s hard to find a shampoo that can handle all that water damage.”
“Damage?” Safu reached out again and patted Shion on the top of the head. “This isn’t damage. You are the only person alive who can spend seventy-five percent of their life in water and come out with hair this soft.”
“Stop it,” Shion said, but it was light-hearted. His hair had always been a point of conflict in his life. Since the moment he was born—sporting snowy hair and bright ruby eyes—Shion had always fought off rude stares and invasive questions. His mother had helped him construct several convincing lies to help discourage people from continuing to pester him. These lies had ranged from childhood illness in Grades 1 through 4, and then expensive dye jobs during his time as a teenager. Shion had never liked the thought of dyeing his hair, but lying to folks that his bizarre hair and eye color were the results of a bottle of Manic Panic and colored contacts kept them from prying and discovering the truth.
Though, even if Shion did break down and tell people the truth—that his father was a merperson who’d seduced his human mother years ago before splitting without a trace, leaving her with a hybrid son whose hair and eyes and ability to breathe underwater were his only connection to his heritage—he doubted anyone would ever believe him.
Except for Safu.
When Shion finally broke down and told Safu the truth, she’d taken the information with a smile. Coming to terms that there were other creatures dwelling in her world came simply. Safu remarked that new species were being discovered all the time. Of course it made sense that there could be merpeople. The ocean hadn’t been completely explored, after all.
Sometimes Shion wondered why a relationship with Safu had never occurred to him. She was a beautiful girl, and always had been; petite with straight brown hair that fell to her shoulders (she’d let it grow out in recent years), dark eyes that saw everything, and a friendly smile that invited people to let their guard down. More than that, Safu was amazingly kind… to the people she liked. She never judged anyone unless they gave her a reason to assume they were judging her, and she was fiercely protective of her friends.
When they were teenagers, Safu had expressed feelings for Shion that he hadn’t been able to reciprocate. Maybe it was because Safu was accustomed to rejection, or maybe it was because she was just a wonderful, loving person, but Shion’s gentle apology in his inability to return her feelings hadn’t stopped her from remaining his best friend.
And when Shion came staggering home one night and called her, squealing with excitement that he’d found someone like him—someone from the sea—Safu had squealed and gushed with him.
Shion shook the thought away before he could dwell on it. Remembering the summers he spent between the ages of sixteen and nineteen were painful for him. He’d formed a romance with a boy from the sea, a boy Shion could picture himself spending the rest of his life with, and then, without explanation or reason, he’d simply vanished into thin air. Zip. Poof. Gone. As if he’d never been there in the first place.
"Hey, Shion. Earth to Shion.”
He looked up. “Huh?”
Safu took one look at his face, and instantly, she knew. “Thinking about Nezumi again?”
Hearing his name sent a knife through Shion’s heart. “No,” he said, but the lie was pointless. He’d never been any good at telling lies to Safu.
Safu clicked her tongue. When Nezumi stopped showing up at the beach, Safu had been furious. She ranted and raved for months about him, furious that he could break Shion’s heart like that. When the next summer came and he still didn’t show up, Safu’s anger cooled into concern. When another year passed, she and Shion mutually agreed that something awful must have happened to Nezumi and tried to mourn.
“Do you want to talk about it,” she said gently, “or change the subject?”
“Change the subject, please.”
“Of course.” Safu took a deep breath, composing her thoughts, and then she said, somewhat loudly, “Well, it won’t be so bad, right? How long do summer internships last at the aquarium, again?”
“Three months,” Shion said, grateful for the change in topic. He took all the pent-up feelings he still had toward Nezumi, even now, and shoved them to the side. If they festered there and turned into a cancerous tumor, he’d deal with it when that time came.
“Ugh, lucky. Our internships last six months.”
“Aren’t all of your interns medical students, though?” Shion stole a brief glance out the window. He wondered if he would catch a familiar flash of black and silver, and then promptly scolded himself for daring to hope.
“Yes, and most of them are lovely. But then you have those ones.” Safu rolled her eyes, and Shion instantly knew which ones she meant.
The children of wealthy parents whose only major contribution to the field was that they spent a lot of money and therefore expected that their children could sail through the program without any effort. Shion had dealt with plenty of those types, too, working at the aquarium. Wealthy donors often assumed a nice dosage of cash would land their children a high-paying, low-effort job once they finished their degree program. Shion lost count of the number of arguments he and other coworkers had had with interns whose ultimate defense was the phrase: “Do you have any idea who my parents are?”
"Maybe this year will be different,” Shion said, not at all confident. He’d been working full-time at the West Block Aquarium for two years, since he turned twenty-two, and not once had a summer internship term been “different”.
“It could be,” Safu replied solemnly. She and Shion shared a mutual nod, and then smiled.
With traffic, it was a forty-minute drive across downtown Kronos, and another three minutes to find a halfway decent parking space in front of the West Block Aquarium that didn’t result in Shion needing to sprint across the parking lot like a lunatic in order to clock in on time.
Shion smoothed his hands through his hair, pressing the tangled locks down against his skull. They bounced back up as he dropped his hands to his sides, and he gave up trying to look presentable.
His white hair, no matter how smooth or messy it was, always attracted attention from the college interns the aquarium employed. Most of them thankfully assumed it was just a dye job—an expensive, extremely thorough dye job, but a dye job nonetheless—but it elicited more than a few stares every year.
Shion scanned his ID badge at the employee entrance and ducked inside. He let the heavy metal door bang shut behind him, sighing as he stepped into the foyer of the employee lounge, cooled by the strong air conditioning unit Rikiga had installed. He tossed his empty coffee cup into the trash can, briefly considering using the Keurig to make himself another cup.
"Hey, Shion.”
Shion turned and spotted his coworker, Yamase, sitting at one of the little brown tables. He clutched a travel mug of tea—Yamase never liked drinking coffee, remarking that no matter how much creamer and sugar he doused it with, he could still taste the “disgusting bean water”—and he looked utterly exhausted.
Shion’s stomach plummeted. “Interns?”
“Interns,” Yamase agreed bitterly.
Shion huffed out a breath and went to the Keurig. “Please tell me there’s at least a few halfway decent ones.”
He prided himself on being an optimist—it was one of his best qualities, according to his mom, Safu, and everyone else he’d ever talked to, and Shion was pretty certain it was the primary reason Rikiga had given him the job in the first place—but something about summer interns made even someone with Shion’s extensive threshold for patience eager for the workday to end.
“Rikiga’s already deep into his cup,” Yamase explained, rolling his eyes. “Big surprise. Anyway, I’ve only met the first few, and supposedly, we’ve got two others starting tomorrow.”
“So, what exactly are we dealing with?” Shion popped a K-cup into the machine and hit brew. He shoved a paper cup beneath the dispenser and listened to the whir of the machine as the water heated up.
Yamase took a deep sip of his tea. “Well, there’s a girl who’s just started her second year at the community college who thinks she wants to go into marine biology. Kudos and all that, but she’s already expecting that we’ll hire her once she graduates since she’s interning with us.”
“Oh, dear.”
“Yeah,” Yamase groaned. “You know how that’s gonna go. I wonder if we’ll have the parents down here again. You remember that?”
Shion shuddered. “How could I forget?” He could still hear the shrill sound of the woman’s voice as she shrieked at Rikiga in the lobby about why he’d rejected her daughter’s application for full-time employment after she’d “slaved away all summer at this dirty, stinking place, and for what?” Never mind that Shion had found her in the employee lounge multiple times during her shift, sneaking alcohol and trying to steal merchandise from the gift shop when she thought no one was looking.
“Maybe she’ll be a good fit,” Shion said, a little too hopefully.
“She bounces when she talks,” Yamase said drily.
"Excuse me?”
“Like full on hops on her heels.” Yamase gave a small demonstration, bouncing twice in his chair before widening his eyes and giving Shion a blank, dead stare. “She also talks like this.” He raised his voice up at the end, almost as if he were asking a question. “With an upward inflection at the end of it. As if she has no idea what she’s doing here.”
“That is so creepy,” Shion shuddered. “Please stop.”
“You think that’s creepy. Try listening to her do it.” Yamase sighed and took a deep gulp from his travel mug. “The lights are definitely on, but no one’s been home for years.”
Shion pinched the bridge of his nose. Wonderful. Just what the aquarium needed. He plucked his cup from the Keurig and dumped a healthy heaping of sugar and creamer packets into the cup.
“The new hire for the gift shop’s hot, though,” Yamase said.
Shion raised an eyebrow. “Oh?”
“Don’t worry—he’s our age,” Yamase assured. “I checked. Not in college, as far as I can tell. Just looking for some extra cash at a part-time job or something. And you know I’m not really into guys, but dang, something about this guy just… I don’t know. Just wait until you see him.” Yamase exhaled. “It’s his eyes, man.”
Shion huffed out a laugh and took a sip of his coffee. After the turbo Safu had ordered for him, it felt watered down and weak, but Shion savored the buzz of caffeine.
“He must be something, then,” Shion said, “if you’ve noticed him.”
“You have no idea. You’re single, right? Maybe you have a shot.”
Shion clicked his tongue. “You sound like Safu.”
"Well, maybe you should start listening to us!” Yamase tipped his head back and finished off the last of his tea. “Maybe we should strong-arm your mother into it. I’m sure that’d make you start looking.”
Shion couldn’t help but smile. He’d tried dating during his undergraduate, and it hadn’t worked. All the men he went out with made snide comments about his hair— “Do the carpets match the drapes? Ha ha, just kidding. Unless…?”—or thought his fascination with sea life bordered on obsessive. Shion wouldn’t have felt comfortable letting them know the truth: that his “obsession” with sea life stemmed from the fact that he came from the same place.
And besides, none of them had made him feel the way Nezumi had.
Not only did Nezumi come from the ocean—Shion could picture the black and blue scales on his long, elegant tail perfectly, like obsidian and sapphires, and his beautiful silver eyes, like the edge of a blade in the sunlight—he never thought Shion’s ramblings were bizarre. He laughed at him, sure, but it was good-natured and beautiful, like the chiming of bells. He could swim faster and deeper than Shion, and he brought him pretty shells and oysters containing pearls from the bottom of the sea where Shion couldn’t swim without raising more than a few eyebrows.
During their summer interactions as teenagers, Shion had never been able to convince Nezumi to come onto the shore. He knew it was possible—his own father had done it years ago—but whenever he asked, Nezumi quickly changed the subject.
Shion’s heart ached, his eyes stinging. The last time he saw Nezumi, they had been eighteen years old. He could still feel the brush of Nezumi’s lips against his own, tasting of saltwater. Shion could have kissed him forever.
Shion quickly shook the thoughts away. He couldn’t afford to get caught up on thoughts of Nezumi anymore. He needed to focus on the new interns and aquarium employees.
Yamase rose and rinsed his travel mug in the sink. The dark blue of his janitor’s uniform stood out against the stark gray walls of the employee lounge. “Well, count yourself lucky you don’t have to deal with most of the interns. You spend most of your time in Number Six. I’m the one who’s gotta spend the whole day trapped in the gift shop.”
Shion cracked a smile. Number Six was the main tank in the direct center of the aquarium, the first major exhibit available as soon as customers walked through the door. Shion’s primary job was to jump into the tank every couple of hours, toss smelt and other dead things at the bigger fish, ensure that the pH levels were safe, and make sure the sand tigers didn’t bully the nurse sharks. Shion never would have pegged sharks to have some weird social hierarchy, but it was there. He’d lost count of the times he’d had to chase away the sand tiger with the blunt snout (who he’d affectionally nicknamed Snubby) from the large nurse shark (Nurse Anne) with the chunk bitten out of her dorsal fin.
Number Six was also known to Yamase and the other janitors as the BFT: the Big Fucking Tank. Shion didn’t like calling it that, but he supposed when the janitors spent most of their shift spraying Windex on the glass and wiping away fingerprints and saliva—seriously, did little kids lick everything?—it made sense they would come to hate it.
The majority of the interns and summer hires started out as cashiers in the gift shop. During his dips in Number Six, Shion could spot the little alcove through the glass, watching as the interns in their bright green tee-shirts displaying the West Block Aquarium logo fumbled through each transaction.
“I wonder if the wannabee marine biologist will try to jump in the tank with you,” Yamase said, eyeing Shion in his periphery. “She doesn’t seem thrilled about the idea of starting as a cashier.”
“They all start out as cashiers,” Shion replied, taking another sip of his coffee. It had already begun to go cold. “She shouldn’t expect special treatment. Retail work can be humbling.”
"Is it twisted that I love watching the rich kids get screamed at by entitled jerks?” Yamase’s dark eyes flashed as he turned to face Shion. “Like, I know retail’s rough and all, but some of these kids are so fucking bratty, and seeing the looks on their faces when they realize that no one cares about how much money they have just warms my heart.”
Shion shook his head. “You’re awful,” he said, but he couldn’t help the smile that spread across his face.
“Yup, and you’re equally as awful. I know you enjoy it, too.” Yamase put his travel mug back into the cupboard where the rest of the employees kept their spare mugs. “Well, I need to get out there and make sure the place is ready for opening. Finish up your coffee. You’re gonna need it. You know they’re probably gonna ask about the hair.”
“And the eyes,” Shion sighed. “They always do.”
“You could dye it.”
“Safu would literally kill me.”
Yamase rolled his eyes. “She might, but wouldn’t it be better than dealing with another wave of ‘wait, they let marine biologists dye their hair? Can you wear contacts underwater? Duuuuude.’”
Shion fought back a shudder. Too many times he’d had to deflect questions surrounding his odd hair color and the piercing shade of his irises. Albinism was a rare trait in humans, and Shion’s skin wasn’t nearly pale enough to pass for it. The odd red marking on his skin—scaled, if people looked close enough, which Shion never let anyone do—definitely shattered the illusion. Shion had hoped people would have a bit of common decency and not ask such invasive questions, but he was often disappointed. Almost every summer, someone cornered him in the break room and demanded to know why his hair was so white, what made his eyes red, how many bleaches did it take to achieve that color, did people think he was less professional because he looked like he was cosplaying all the time?
Sometimes Shion wondered if he should joke that he was a merman. Well, half a merman, anyway.
As soon as the thought crossed his mind, he could hear Nezumi’s voice snap, “Child of the Sea! Not merman. That’s a human word.” His mood instantly darkened, and Shion shook his head.
“Child of the Sea” was the preferred term in the underwater community, or so Shion had been told. Only human beings used words like “mermaid” and “merman”. Despite the wave of sorrow that Shion felt whenever the thought of Nezumi came rushing back, he couldn’t help the small flicker of warmth that kindled itself in his heart.
“Well,” Yamase sighed. “I’m heading back. Rip the Band-Aid off.”
“All right.”
“See you in a few,” Yamase replied with a wave, ducking out into the hallway. “Good luck!”
Shion exhaled and took another sip of his cool coffee. Summer interns. At least he had a reprieve from them when he dove into the tank. He took a few moments to sip his coffee, reveling in the silence he knew would soon be broken. Ah, well. It was only eight-thirty in the morning. Seven o’clock would come soon enough.
Shion finished his coffee, pulled on his white lab coat, and trotted out to the main foyer. The West Block Aquarium opened at ten o’clock on the dot—despite his active drinking and usual forgetfulness, Rikiga was oddly punctual—and the first hour would be spent preparing for the shift and greeting the interns and summer help.
Shion plastered a big smile on his face and tried to be positive. Summer interns were frustrating, but he had to remember that he was once in their shoes, too. Several years ago, he’d been a bright-eyed intern working at this same aquarium. Ignoring his obvious one-up over the other interns—primarily the fact that he could breathe underwater (secretly, of course) and understood ocean life in a way that astounded his professors and quickly moved him through his undergraduate degree with flying colors—he’d enjoyed working alongside other interns.
As he hurried toward the main foyer, stationed direction in front of Number Six, he couldn’t help but marvel at the decorations welcoming the new wave of summer customers. Bright plastic statues of sea lions and talking starfish lined the floors, gesturing toward the hallways and announcing exhibits. Neat signs with fun facts and information about the exhibit inhabitants sat in front of glass cages, and the sound of rushing water sounded like music to Shion’s ears.
Shion trotted almost everywhere. His colleagues joked that he was always in a hurry. Shion didn’t know if it was because he moved faster in the water than on land, even without the function of a tail, but he couldn’t help it. He jogged everywhere he went: meetings, feedings, the break room. Sometimes he worried he looked ridiculous—a young man in a white lab coat with obviously dyed hair (ha) jogging like a toddler through the aquarium—but if he did, no one commented one way or the other about it.
The four-story tank, illuminated with bright LED lights at the base and on each conjoining floor, wrapping upward in a slanted ramp like a makeshift spiral staircase, rose into view as Shion stepped out into the main exhibit. The brightly-colored tropical fish swam lazily through the teal water, their dark eyes staring blankly out at Shion as he approached the two individuals standing near the door, awaiting his arrival.
Shion swallowed the wave of frustration that surged inside him, caging it behind his clenched teeth as he kept the smile plastered on his face His colleagues had left him to deal with the new interns on his own.
Ha ha, funny.
As he approached the two interns—a young woman with vibrant pink hair (clearly a dye job, and a rather inexpensive one, at that, if the blond roots at the top were any indication) and a young man with dark hair yanked back into a ponytail, both dressed in the bright green West Block Aquarium staff shirt—the girl broke away from the tank and came sprinting up toward Shion.
“Oh, hi!” she shrieked, her voice piercing through the vacant walls of the aquarium. It carried, so sharp and sudden that Shion felt as if a knife had been drilled into his ear.
He flinched—the other intern did, too—and jerked to a halt.
“You must be Shion, right? Mr. Rikiga mentioned you’d be stopping by!” The girl clapped her hands, as if the idea of meeting Shion was too exciting to be contained inside her little body. “I’m so excited to be working with you! My name’s Miyamoto Emi, but my friends call me Emi-chan. Oh, darn, can I call you Shion, or is that too informal? Gosh, this is so exciting!”
Shion gawked down at the girl, unsure of what to say. She looked about twenty years old, short in a way that was noticeable even to someone like Shion. He wasn’t very tall, himself—he rose to a respectable five-feet-seven-inches—and this girl rose to the middle of his chest. She tipped her head back to look into his face, her dark brown eyes wide with excitement, and yep, there was the bouncing Yamase had mentioned. With each syllable that left her mouth, she rose an inch off the ground and then came down hard on her heels. She wore a pair of black flip-flops (definitely not regulation, according to the employee handbook, which Rikiga definitely didn’t enforce), and the rubber soles thumped rhythmically on the solid tile floor.
“Mr. Rikiga said you were a marine biologist,” Emi went on. “That must be so exciting. I’ve wanted to be a marine biologist since I was a little girl. I’ve always loved turtles, and I just wanna be able to work with them. Oh, wow!” Her eyes widened further—how was that possible?—and she stared at Shion’s white hair.
His stomach plummeted.
“Your hair—” she said, a shriek building in her throat. Shion could see it. Her shoulders quaked beneath the force of it, her whole body unable to contain the sheer joy that came from seeing Shion’s pristine white hair coupled with his lab coat. “Where do you get your hair done? Do you do it yourself? My friend Mariko did my hair”—she grabbed a lock of her own pink hair and shoved it toward Shion—“but it doesn’t look nearly as good as yours does!”
“Um, thank you.” Shion gave her a wobbly smile. This was a new development. Sometimes the interns were cold and stand-offish, and sometimes they were uninterested in the position.
This, however? This was new.
Shion felt his head spinning as he tried to focus on the girl bouncing in front of him. He glanced over her shoulder, seeking out the second intern. The young man was staring at Emi as if she’d just exploded and scattered across the foyer in an array of glitter. His hair framed his face, long and pulled into a high ponytail. He had a narrow, pale face, and Shion wondered briefly if this was the young man Yamase had mentioned back in the break room. He squinted over Emi’s head—where did she get the energy to keep bouncing like this?—examining the young man’s face to see what about him Yamase had been so taken by.
The young man was tall and thin, his hair a dark shade of black that Shion suspected would look blue in certain lighting. Even with the fluorescent bulbs in the aquarium itself, he could pick out the few pale gray strands and blue bits that made the young man’s hair beautiful rather than plain. His skin was far too pale for the lime-green of the staff shirt, and it made him look sickly and washed out.
He lifted his head to give Shion a look that clearly read ‘Poor you’, and Shion managed to get a good look at his eyes.
It’s his eyes, man.
Two bright silver coins stared back at Shion, narrowed in a way that Shion recognized as someone trying to figure out where they recognized someone from. His stomach twisted. Flecks of blue and white danced behind a pale of solid silver glass, shifting depending on his mood. When he was happy, they were vibrant and luminous. When he was aggravated, they darkened like the sky over a stormy sea. Shion had seen them in almost every variant, and he stood there, dumbstruck, as the young man stared into his face, too—taking in his bright red irises, the red marking wrapped around his throat, and his vibrant white hair—and finally, finally recognized him.
His jaw dropped. It was an almost comical look, but he managed to make it look beautiful. He unfolded his arms from across his chest, letting them fall limply at his sides.
“Shion?” he said.
His voice. His voice. Shion could still hear it in his memories. The peals of laughter, the shouts whenever they argued, the gentle songs he sang. All of it came flooding back in a crushing wave that made Shion feel as if he were drowning. His lungs were designed to pull oxygen both on land and beneath the surface. Shion would never know how it felt to drown in earnest—but standing across from Nezumi, the boy he’d fallen in love with in his youth, the boy who’d claimed his first kiss, the boy who’d left one day and never come back, Shion wondered if this was how it felt to have all the air knocked out of him once and for all.
Emi’s bright smile never left her face, but her eyes widened. “Oh, my gosh. Do you know two each other?” She looked over her shoulder at the young man—at Nezumi—and clapped her hands. “That’s so exciting!”
“Um,” Shion said, taking a trembling step backward. The room around him crushed inward, the air tight and thick. He swallowed once, finding it difficult to breathe. “Yes, um…”
Nezumi’s shocked expression shifted into concern, and Shion felt himself edging toward a full-on breakdown. Shards of glass punched through his stomach, heat and pain radiating through each pulse point in his body until it was all he could feel. He couldn’t sense the solid tiles beneath his feet or the air conditioner churning above his head. His vision tunneled, blocking out everything except the young man standing in front of him—standing! On legs!—in his ridiculous staff tee shirt and his khaki pants, looking every bit like the beautiful, otherworldly creature he was once he stepped into the ocean.
“Ah, w-well,” Shion managed, the words heavy as stones on his tongue. “W-welcome to the West Block Aquarium. So nice to be working with you both. Um, I have to, ah, feed the fish in the BFT now. Ah, I mean, in Number Six. The big tank behind you. Yup, that’s Number Six. I’m sure Mr. Rikiga will tell you all about it as part of the tour.”
“Shion,” Nezumi said, and his voice was equally as wobbly. He took a step forward, and panic surged through Shion’s body like an injection of ice water.
”Goodbye!” Shion spun on his heel and fled back toward the break room. There was an elevator in the far back, reserved for employee usage and available for disabled customers, and if Shion input the code into the panel, it would go to the floor linking to the observatory room for Number Six. It wasn’t available to the public, reserved for marine biologists like Shion to record the pH balances of the tank and the weights of each animal.
His shoes smacked against the tile as he hurried toward the hallway leading to the elevator. The twisting halls that stretched past the rooms dedicated to shells and the horseshoe crab touch tank—popular with the children and high school customers—and Shion rounded them quickly, searching desperately for the signs leading to the elevator.
“Shion, wait!”
Shion whirled and saw Nezumi hurrying up the ramp toward him. He stumbled a bit as he ran, as if he’d been sitting down for a long time and his legs hadn’t quite adjusted to movement. The fluorescent lights caught against the strands of his hair, and the lime green of the staff shirt clashed horribly with his khaki pants and pale skin.
He looked ridiculous. He looked amazing. He looked—
Alive.
“You’re alive,” Shion said, his voice sounding stupid in his ears.
Nezumi stumbled to a stop a few steps in front of him. He was wearing heavy black combat boots (completely against regulation, since the soles weren’t non-marking), and one pant leg of his cargo pants was tucked in while the other hung frustratingly loose around his ankle. “Yeah,” he said, sounding equally as stupid and just as wonderful as Shion remembered. “Yeah, I’m alive.”
“But—” Shion fumbled for something, anything, and came up short. “You—you vanished! You stopped coming to the beach.”
Nezumi winced. “I know.”
The prickles of cold were replaced with agitation that dug like thorns in his body. “I waited for you,” he said, low and harsh. “Every day for months. Years. And you—you never came back.”
Nezumi flinched back as if Shion had ripped one of the decorative plywood sea turtles off the wall and chucked it at him. “I know,” he murmured. “I’m sorry.”
“Sorry?” Shion barked out a laugh. “Five years of no contact—nothing—and now you show up here, at my work, to tell me you’re sorry?”
“I didn’t know you worked here,” Nezumi said.
“Then why are you here? You sure as hell can’t be a university student!”
Nezumi’s silver eyes flashed in the vibrant LED lights. “I’ve never heard you swear before,” he murmured wondrously, as if it was the most amazing thing in the world.
“Don’t change the subject!” Shion growled. “Where the hell do you get off just—”
“I wanted to come back,” Nezumi interjected. He didn’t raise his voice (which only aggravated Shion further), and he kept his hands at his side. Shion couldn’t help staring at each of his long, elegant fingers, remembering how they felt running over his cheek or brushing through his hair while they swam.
“Then why didn’t you?” Shion’s heart pounded in his chest, blood rushing through his ears. “You kissed me, said goodnight, and then you just vanished. For five years, Nezumi.”
“I didn’t mean to,” Nezumi said, raising his voice just a little. Shion could hear it in his voice that he was struggling not to yell, that he didn’t really have the right to yell. “Something happened, and as much as you meant to me, I couldn’t just—”
Those words stabbed through Shion’s chest like arrows. It’d taken Nezumi three years—three long, painful years—to finally say the words I love you. Shion hadn’t held it against him. Nezumi didn’t express his feelings through words. He translated them in his actions. Shion felt his love in the way he found ways to maintain physical contact when they were together. He felt Nezumi’s love each time Nezumi brought him pretty shells from the deeper parts of the ocean floor.
Shion knew how much he meant to Nezumi. And as angry as he was at Nezumi’s unexpected disappearance, the fact that he was here now must have meant something.
Shion opened his mouth to speak—to say what, he didn’t know—and Emi came trotting down the hallway, huffing and puffing as if it’d taken all her energy to catch up with them.
“There—,” she gasped dramatically, doubling over and pressing her hand against her chest. “There you two are! Why did you run away?”
Nezumi glanced over at her, and Shion took the opportunity to escape. “It’s nothing. Nezumi’s an old friend” —he didn’t miss the way Nezumi flinched— “and things were… well, it’s complicated. But this isn’t the place for it.”
Emi’s dark brown eyes widened. “Ooh?” She looked at Shion, then at Nezumi, and then back. She clapped her hands together. “What’s this? A secret romance?”
“The hell?” Nezumi muttered, despite everything.
“Emi,” Shion said firmly, “now is neither the time nor the place. Now,” he added, looking at the clock suspended from the wall. “I believe you two are due for orientation. Mr. Rikiga will be expecting you.”
“Ooh, you’re right! We don’t wanna be late!” Emi spun on her heel and reached out for Nezumi’s wrist. “Come on, uh, Nezumi, was it? Weird. We’re gonna be late!”
Nezumi withdrew his wrist from Emi’s reach and turned to look at Shion. “I’m out at noon,” he said carefully. Shion’s shoulders shot to his ears, the words slicing through him like a bullet. “Can we talk then?”
“I’m not free until after the aquarium closes,” Shion replied. He didn’t know why he said it, but it wouldn’t do him any good to lie. Nezumi would probably figure out his schedule soon enough anyway.
“That’s fine. How about I meet you here after work?” Nezumi lowered his voice so that Emi, already skipping back toward the main foyer, wouldn’t overhear. “I get it if you tell me to fuck off, but… I’d like to explain myself.”
“All right,” Shion mumbled. “I’ll meet you outside the employee entrance at seven-thirty.”
“I’ll be here,” Nezumi said. There was so much strength and conviction in his voice that Shion couldn’t help but meet his eye. The fluorescent lights caught in his irises as he repeated, slower, “I will be here, Shion.”
“Sure,” Shion whispered, and he watched as Nezumi turned and headed back toward the foyer. He seemed to stumble a bit, but even that seemed inhumanly graceful. Shion’s heart ached as he watched him leave.
Eventually, his duties as a dedicated marine biologist convinced him to seek out the elevator, punch in the code to the Number Six observatory floor, and strip out of his lab coat, button-down, and slacks in favor of his West Block Aquarium scuba suit. Dark blue with lime green accents, it was Shion’s least favorite piece of work equipment, simply for its pointlessness. He was a Child of the Sea—at least fifty percent of him was—and scuba gear was wasted on someone who could breathe underwater.
But he couldn’t exactly drop into the forty-foot tank without his gear in front of tourists.
Shion struggled into his scuba suit, his heart hammering a thousand miles a minute. His hands shook as he zipped up his wetsuit, fumbling with the useless air tank (he could breathe underwater, damn it, but the tourists and the interns and his boss couldn’t know that) and all the tubes in their proper place to pump oxygen uselessly into his lungs.
Shion sat on the edge of the top level of Number Six, his vision blurring red and gray. His bright yellow swim fins felt ridiculous and artificial—even though Shion had never been able to grow a tail of his own, his legs more than strong enough to propel him through the water—and his whole body buzzed with anxiety. He took a few deep breaths, trying to calm himself in a way that proved to be completely ineffective, and then he tumbled backward into Number Six.
Sinking down into the depths, Shion let the cold water collapse around him and smother the heat of embarrassment and anger and relief that churned inside him. He sank downward through a small school of colorful fish and past Trudgealong (a withered sea turtle with a no-nonsense attitude), squeezing his eyes closed behind the useless face mask and trying to breathe.
Goddammit.
Nezumi’s shocked face flashed behind his closed eyelids. His voice echoed in Shion’s skull like a pissed off bee, and no matter how hard Shion fought it, he couldn’t help but remember how it had felt to sink beneath the waves with Nezumi guiding him by the wrist, propelling them both along the coral reefs much more quickly than Shion could move on his own.
Shion shook away the thoughts and focused on eying the occupants of Number Six and taking mental notes on their overall health.
For the most part, the fish and assorted sharks looked decent. Shion could sense the increased buzz of excitement radiating from them; he couldn’t “speak to fish”, and Nezumi had confirmed that no Child of the Sea could. He could, however, sense when they were comfortable or agitated.
The fish in Number Six enjoyed the summer rush far more than the staff at the West Block Aquarium did. Snubby, for example, seemed to enjoy preening in front of children who remarked on his crooked teeth and blunt nose with loud shouts to their parents and pointing fingers. These were Snubby’s point of pride, and he swam quickly around the tank to ensure everyone got a good look. If Snubby were a human or a Child of the Sea, Shion felt the two of them wouldn’t get along very well. Fortunately, for both of them, Snubby couldn’t talk.
Beneath the cool saltwater, the red marking wrapped around Shion’s body chilled. These were the only “scales” Shion had on his body, and something about being in the water gave them a more aquatic appearance. The otherwise smooth red marking bristled and slotted with patterns, and if Shion ran his bare finger over it, it would feel bumpy and slick. The vibrant color made him wonder if this would be the color his tale would be if he could grow one in water. Sometimes he disliked not being able to grow one the way Nezumi and other Children of the Sea could, but Nezumi had never made him feel bad for it. In fact, Nezumi claimed, based on the stories he’d been told, Shion was lucky. The tradeoff for most Children of the Sea was that while they could grow tails in water, their legs were weak on land. Some of the most graceful Children of the Sea turned into complete klutzes on the surface.
As a teenager, Shion had laughed himself sick at the prospect of beautiful, elegant Nezumi being reduced to a tripping mess on the land. He often wondered if that was why Nezumi would never come up on land. Nezumi was a proud creature, and Shion often wondered if his pride could survive face-planting on the sand.
But now Nezumi was on land.
Shion shook his head. Don’t think about it right now.
Shion bit down on the breathing apparatus stuffed in his mouth. Something deep inside him made him glance down to the foyer through the clear, teal water. Through the glass several floors down, Shion could see Emi and Nezumi standing in front of Rikiga. Shion watched his boss lazily drift his hand through the air, giving them both the same spiel he gave each intern at the beginning of their first shift. Emi continued to bounce on the balls of her feet, looking ready to explode into a thousand pieces. And Nezumi…
Nezumi looked up into the tank. His eyes met Shion’s, even several stories down, and he lifted his hand to wave at him.
Shion didn’t know what compelled him, but he lifted his gloved hand and waved back.
At fifteen past seven, when the aquarium had officially closed and the majority of the staff had clocked out and gone home, Shion stood outside the employee entrance, arms wrapped around himself in a desperate attempt to keep from falling apart.
Seven-thirty. Nezumi had promised to come back to the aquarium at seven-thirty and meet Shion at the employee entrance.
Shion eyed the cars zipping down the street on the opposite end of the empty parking lot. The West Block Aquarium emptied out pretty quick after the doors closed. None of the staff were eager to pull extra hours, and Rikiga didn’t offer overtime. Shion was an exception—the only one on Rikiga’s staff who was salary—and if Rikiga happened to spot his car still in the lot, it wouldn’t have raised any eyebrows.
He leaned back against the brick wall, the warm stones heating the fabric of his lab coat. He didn’t know why he bothered wearing it. Shion spent most of his time submerged in the tanks, but the lab coat made him feel normal. Human. He didn’t mind being a hybrid, not at all, but it was lonely not having someone like him to confide in.
Shion flexed his fingers. He still remembered the day he and Nezumi met. Shion had been walking down the beach—because what else was a gainfully unemployed sixteen-year-old to do on a sunny summer day in a bustling tourist town—and growing anxious amidst the screaming toddlers and indifferent mothers in their floppy sunhats, Shion had sought out a place where he could dive underwater and go missing for a bit.
Diving under the waves and vanishing, however, wouldn’t work with an audience. People stared at him because of his weird hair (even in a tourist town where teenagers dyeing their hair ridiculous colors was well within the norm), and if he went underwater and didn’t resurface, he’d have the Coast Guard called on him in no time.
Climbing the rocks clustered on the left side of the beach and walking another mile from the main beach, Shion sought out a strip of soft white beach where he could sprint in and vanish. The broken pier attached to the boardwalk (abandoned for months after a nasty embezzling scandal leaked to the press) rose into view, and Shion’s mood brightened.
He ducked beneath the pier, preparing to slip beneath the waves—and lo and behold, tangled in a net and cursing up a storm had been Nezumi.
A fisherman’s net had tangled around him as he skimmed the bottom of the water, and Nezumi had managed to break the net from the boat (rightfully confusing the fishermen in the process, who must have assumed they’d wrangled a shark), but the tight coils had knotted around his fins. Unwilling to be a sitting duck for a bigger predator (believe it or not, Children of the Sea were not the top of the food chain), Nezumi had desperately sought a strip of beach where he could safely work on pulling the net off his tail.
Immediately springing into action, Shion had deftly untangled the knots, whispering to Nezumi that he’d have him free in no time. His mind buzzed with excitement—someone like him was sitting right there—but it didn’t feel like an appropriate time to gush.
Nezumi, who’d growled at Shion when he first approached, went painfully still. His silver eyes, so beautiful and unlike anything Shion had ever seen before, watched each movement of his hands as he worked the net carefully off his fins. Shion fought his own urges to brush his fingers against the dark black and blue scales, jealous and enamored of something he should have had but didn’t, and after a few minutes of careful working, he tossed the vicious net aside and said, brightly, “There! You’re free.”
“Much obliged,” Nezumi muttered, and then, before Shion could blink, Nezumi’s hand wrapped around his wrist and yanked him into the water.
The shock of the cool ocean made Shion gasp; that had probably been Nezumi’s intention. With a few powerful flicks of his tail, Nezumi propelled them away from the shore, banking downward into the deeper ends of the shallows.
“You saved me, human,” Nezumi’s voice purred in his ear, sending goosebumps skittering down his bare arms. “So, I suppose it’s only fair to reward you.”
Drowning is a reward? Shion had thought. He’d opened his mouth to tell Nezumi that drowning wouldn’t work on him, that he wasn’t human—and Nezumi’s mouth closed over his own.
Shion’s eyes widened. Nezumi’s mouth was cool, but his soft lips sent waves of warmth through each nerve ending in Shion’s body. His eyes slid shut, the gentle shifts of the ocean waves rustling above his head. Tendrils of Nezumi’s long, dark hair brushed against his cheeks. Shion fought the urge to reach his hands out and brush his fingers through it, wondering at how soft it would feel.
An eternity later, Nezumi drew back, his arms still wrapped around Shion’s shoulders. Shion swallowed a mouthful of seawater and opened his eyes.
Nezumi’s silver eyes hovered a few inches in front of his own. He looked down at Shion—still alive, still staring at him in wonder—and a muscle in his jaw twitched. “You…” he said slowly. “You’re not drowning.”
“I am not.”
“You’re… like me?”
"Yeah. Well, half, anyway.”
“Oh,” Nezumi said, and that had been the beginning of it all.
From the moment Shion laid eyes on Nezumi, he’d known there was something different about him. Not just because he had a tail and looked like a god, but because he wasn’t like anyone else Shion had ever met in his life.
Nezumi had a vicious sense of humor. Nezumi was sarcastic and cold. He mocked Shion and poked fun at his wetsuit—black with bright red accents, because it made him feel at least somewhat attractive and it was comfortable—and he never understood how Shion could enjoy walking around on land when there was a whole ocean to explore.
But there was so much more to Nezumi than his sarcasm. He loved listening to stories. His laugh sounded like bells. He sang songs when he and Shion were alone, and he knocked Safu off her surfboard as a joke until she kicked him in the shoulder and tried to wrestle him underwater, both of them shrieking with laughter.
“Shion!”
He lifted his head, startled from his memories, and spotted Nezumi hurrying across the parking lot.
It was strange, seeing him with a pair of legs rather than a long black tail, but at least he’d changed out of the vibrant green tee-shirt Rikiga insisted his staff members wear to be more visible. Shion had never been more grateful than the day he’d been given permission to wear whatever he wanted as long as he wore a lab coat over it during work hours. As the son of Rikiga’s good friend (Crush, Safu insisted, and Shion gallantly ignored her), Shion received something akin to “special treatment” from Rikiga, though he never asked for it.
He was still wearing the cargo pants and black boots he’d been wearing earlier, but in place of the tee shirt was a black leather jacket that Shion had to admit looked stunning on him. It mixed well with his long, dark hair and piercing eyes; it was a wonder that he’d made it to the aquarium at all. How did he get through each day without a horde of people swarming around him?
Shion looked down at his cell phone. The screen flashed its white numbers, announcing seven-twenty-five. Shion’s heart skipped a bit, and he tried to compose himself as Nezumi trotted up beside him.
“You’re early,” he said softly.
“Didn’t want to risk being late,” Nezumi replied. “You don’t deserve that.”
Shion huffed through his nose. “Let’s go inside. We can talk there.”
“OK,” Nezumi mumbled.
Shion let them in the employee entrance. He shut the door behind them, then made a bee line for the elevator leading up to the observatory room near Number Six.
“Where are you going?” Nezumi called after him.
“Let’s go to Number Six,” Shion called back. “It’ll be easier to talk if we don’t worry about people walking in on us.”
“The aquarium’s closed, though.” Nezumi caught up to him rather quickly. He strode beside Shion, his long legs easily keeping pace with Shion’s brisk stride. “Who’d walk in?”
"Well, hopefully, no one. But you never know what employees have left things behind. So it’d be better not to be talking about… things where people could overhear.”
“Good point,” Nezumi murmured.
The elevator ride up to the observatory room was silent and awkward. Shion shifted from one foot to the other, and Nezumi lingered on the far end of the little room to give him space. Shion could feel those piercing silver eyes sliding toward him, then quickly darting away when Shion tried to look back. It sent prickles through his body, and he clenched his fists to focus on something else.
When the elevator dinged and signaled their arrival at the observatory, Nezumi stepped out of the room and half-jogged across the tile floor and toward the top of the tank. The lights had been dimmed, only a few bulbs bright and illuminating the dome. Nezumi quickly unzipped the black leather jacket and tossed it casually to the floor, revealing a long-sleeved yellow shirt beneath it.
“Nezumi?” Shion asked.
Nezumi didn’t answer. He shucked off his shirt, and beneath it he wore a black sleeveless shirt that Shion suspected was meant to keep him from being bare-chested in the water.
“Um,” Shion said, feeling his face heating up. “What exactly are you doing?”
"Proof,” Nezumi called over his shoulder. He swooped down to undo his black boots, kicking them off into the corner beside Number Six’s main pool.
“Proof of what?” Shion asked, but Nezumi didn’t answer. He unbuttoned his pants, and Shion quickly looked away. His face burned, and only when he heard the sound of water splashing did he turn back.
Nezumi popped back up, grabbing the side of the tank and folding his arms on top of it. He rested his chin on his wrists and looked up at Shion. His silver eyes (exactly as Shion remembered, even years later) glittered in the fluorescent lights. His hair was still in a ponytail, several strands falling down over where his ears would be.
“Just wanted to make sure you knew it was really me,” Nezumi said, and with a flick of his tail, he sent a few droplets of water raining down over Shion’s head.
His tail.
Shion’s heart stopped. When Shion met Nezumi, the first thing he’d noticed (after the eyes) had been his tail. Unlike the bright blues and greens of Disney and childhood picture books, Nezumi’s tale was dark black and flecked with deep blue. The fins were wider and longer at the base, almost lace-like and elegant. Beneath the surface of the water, Shion couldn’t seen what they looked like at the hips (he was still wearing the lime green West Block Aquarium staff tee shirt, which didn’t suit him at all), but from his memory, he knew that the scales melded into flesh around his navel.
Shion crouched beside the tank, his stomach tightening. “Why now?”
Nezumi’s tail sank back below the surface of the water. Shion could see it swaying idly back and forth, the way a human might churn their feet lazily to keep themselves afloat in calm seas.
Shion knew Nezumi’s tail would be cold if he touched it. So would his skin. Nezumi was always cold. Not his personality, but—all right, sometimes his personality, too, but mostly his skin and tail were cool whenever Shion touched them. Even years later, he could remember the way it felt to smooth his hand over Nezumi’s hip, counting the blue scales peppered throughout. Nezumi’s tail reminded him of obsidian, black at first glance, with flecks of gray and purple and blue when it moved and the light shifted across it.
Nezumi’s eyes lowered to the floor between them. A harsh silence fell around them, punctuated only by the buzzing of the lights overhead and the glug-glug of the industrial-sized water filter.
“I didn’t mean to disappear for so long,” Nezumi explained, and his voice held so much conviction that Shion didn’t doubt him.
“You said that.”
“When I went back, something… happened.”
Shion raised an eyebrow.
Nezumi’s fingers wove into his damp bangs, which were so long they fell over his left eye, and gave them a yank. Shion’s heart clenched; he recognized it as an old habit Nezumi had when they were teenagers, something he did when he was nervous or uncomfortable. His nails were still pale and long, neat despite the distinct lack of access to quality salon service beneath the ocean’s waves.
“A human found the town where I lived,” he said quietly. “Under the ocean. When I wasn’t visiting you at the beach.”
Shion felt something clamp around his heart.
He knew what it meant if humans discovered the existence of the Children of the Sea. Humans, as much as Shion might have liked to believe otherwise, couldn’t stand knowing that there were resources they hadn’t been able to exploit. And the existence of merpeople would be a scientific miracle—enough that some greedy bastard would utilize it to try and earn millions.
“What happened?” Shion whispered. He hadn’t recalled seeing any breaking news headlines about merpeople; he definitely would have seen something like that, unless the government came swooping in to silence it.
Nezumi’s tail twitched under the water, clearly agitated. “Instead of running to the news,” he said through his teeth, “this idiot decided to try and capture one of us and bring them to the shore as evidence. Needless to say, the rest of us didn’t take kindly to that.”
“I’d imagine not.”
“But what we didn’t count on,” Nezumi said, his voice lowering, “was the oil.” He rested his hand flat on the water’s surface, letting it bounce gently beneath the water and then lifting it back up. “He emptied a container of oil into the water—not sure where he got it—and lit a match. I didn’t know it was that flammable.”
Shion listened as Nezumi explained how the flames had burned the Children of the Sea, who were unaccustomed to the sensation due to their inexperience with burning things. The oil doused them and made them sink below, unable to swim and avoid the flames. The water didn’t seem to stop it, the sticky substance creating an odd shield that didn’t mix well with the water, keeping the two materials separate from each other.
His heart ached at the thought of all the Children of the Sea who had suffered—according to Nezumi’s whispered story, the whole town had gone down in flames. A decent chunk of them had managed to escape, Nezumi included, but the majority of them…
The majority of them had burned to death.
“I’m sorry,” Shion whispered as Nezumi lapsed into uncomfortable silence. “Oh, Nezumi, I’m so sorry.”
“I was so angry,” Nezumi replied. “When I woke up and realized what had happened, I was so angry I couldn’t think of anything else. I was hurt. I was scared. And I couldn’t think of anything except how much I hated humans.”
Shion frowned. Nezumi’s dislike for humans wasn’t new to him. And fortunately, Nezumi had never spat Shion’s half-human heritage in his face. If anything, he seemed as fascinated by Shion’s legs as Shion was about his tail. The only difference was that Nezumi could have had a pair of his own—he stubbornly chose not to—and Shion had never been able to pop a tail no matter how many (embarrassing) times he’d attempted.
“When I woke up, I didn’t know where I was,” Nezumi went on. “All I knew was that my back hurt and everyone else I knew was dead. For a while things were just… bad. I couldn’t move, and when I tried, it just made me realize that there was a chance I was going to die, too, and I hated it. After a while, I could move, and I just left.”
“Left?” Shion echoed.
“I couldn’t stand being there,” Nezumi said under his breath. “Everywhere I looked I could see all the people I knew, and then I remembered that because of one greedy fucking human, they were gone. We took him down with us—Sasori, I think, yanked him off the boat and drowned him—but it didn’t feel like enough. It didn’t matter that he was dead, too. It didn’t matter that, miraculously, I’d survived whatever the hell he did to us. It just didn’t matter.”
Shion swallowed the lump in his throat. His eyes stung.
“I wanted to come back,” Nezumi went on, his voice painfully soft. Shion had to strain to hear him. “I wanted to at least tell you why I was going. But every time I thought about going back to that place, something just made me leave. It’s not an excuse, and I know it’s not a good enough reason to make you think that I just abandoned you, but I couldn’t—couldn’t get past the anger. I hated everyone. I hated myself. I was so angry, and there was no coming back from it. And I didn’t…” He waved his hands, agitated, the words slipping away from him. He huffed and said, “I didn’t want to take it out on you. It’s so fucking stupid, but I didn’t want to shout at you and blame you, and I was so angry with humans that I knew I would. If I saw you then, I’d only see the human part of you and blame you for things you had nothing to do with. That’s not fair. I know it’s not. And I’m not asking you to forgive me. I wouldn’t forgive me, either.”
“Then why come back?” Shion whispered. He’d moved forward, almost like an instinct, and sat at the edge of the tank, a few inches from Nezumi’s face. “Why come back at all?”
“Because I missed you,” Nezumi whispered back, as strong and as sure as if he’d simply stated the color of the morning sky. “I missed you. When the anger cooled, you were all I could think about. I had no way of knowing if you were even still here, or if you’d even want to see me after I just left, but if there was a chance, I wanted to take it.”
Shion’s throat tightened. He swallowed around the lump that had lodged there and ordered himself not to cry. He was angry. He was supposed to be angry. And yet, beneath the anger was wave after wave of relief that Nezumi was alive.
“So… the aquarium?”
Nezumi shrugged. “It seemed like a good job for a Child of the Sea. I filled out the application and they called me back. I didn’t know you were working here. But once I got a job and… established myself here, I wanted to find you.”
“Established yourself?”
“I wanted a way to prove to you that I wanted to stay. If you told me to fuck off and never wanted to see me again, I would understand. But I wanted a way to prove to you that I intend to stay this time.”
Shion’s hands tightened around the lip of the tank. Emotions whirled inside him like a tsunami, and he felt as if he was caught in the middle of it, unable to surface. Stinging tears prickled at the backs of his eyes, and he forced back the urge to cry. Once he started, he knew he’d never stop. He scraped the back of his hand beneath his eyes, widening them just a bit to keep from crying.
He was still angry. Of course he was. But he couldn’t imagine how badly it hurt. He couldn’t imagine what he would have done if his mother’s bakery burnt down, with her and Safu and everyone else he knew trapped inside.
He took a deep breath, feeling it catching inside his chest around the ball of anger and sorrow and raw fucking hope that’d nestled within.
"Where are you staying?” Shion murmured.
Nezumi perked up, but kept his voice steady as he answered, “A motel down on Seventh Street. By the boardwalk. You remember.”
“I do.” Shion pressed his lips together. “It’s not too far from my house. What’s your schedule?”
"I’m off tomorrow, but I think I’m working open to close on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays. The old man says hours will pick up some time, but he wasn’t specific.”
“Do you have a car?”
“Can’t drive,” Nezumi answered, much too quickly, and Shion couldn’t help the laugh that cracked out of his throat. “I can barely walk—don’t laugh at me. This is serious.”
“I’m not laughing at you,” Shion said, but his lips were tugging upward at the corners. He had to admit, despite everything that’d happened, it was pretty fucking funny. Nezumi—elegant, perfect, beautiful, wonderful Nezumi, whose every movement was the physical definition of grace—was clumsy on the land.
“Yes, you are,” Nezumi groused, but when Shion stole a glance up into his face, he was smiling, too.
God, his smile.
Even after all these years, he was still as beautiful as the day Shion met him.
“Well,” Shion said, and dammit, if his voice wobbled, Nezumi better not comment on it. “The boardwalk’s on my way to the aquarium, and if you’re working about the same schedule as me, I wouldn’t mind picking you up and bringing you home.”
Nezumi’s eyes widened.
“I’m not ready to forgive you just yet,” Shion explained. “You really hurt me. I understand why you left, but I wish you had just… I don’t know, said something to me so I didn’t think you were dead. I know that might be petty of me, given what happened, and I’m sorry for that.”
“It’s not petty,” Nezumi assured. “I was an asshole.”
“Yeah, but you almost died.” Shion exhaled through his nose. “And I missed you, too.”
Nezumi laughed; it crackled a bit at the edges, and Shion couldn’t help it. He leaned forward, his arms reaching out—and miraculously, Nezumi reached back. Shion slid his arms around Nezumi’s shoulders and rested his forehead against the crook of Nezumi’s neck. He smelled like sea salt and an odd floral scent Shion had never been able to identify but could always remember. Despite being half fish, Nezumi never smelled like anything Shion would have expected.
Nezumi’s arms tightened around his shoulders and squeezed back. “I really did miss you,” he murmured against the top of Shion’s head.
“I missed you, too,” Shion said, and it was true. As angry and hurt as he was with Nezumi’s sudden disappearance, nothing about that had changed. “I’m not ready to go back to the way things were, and I can’t promise that I will be…”
“That’s fine,” Nezumi assured, burying his face in Shion’s hair. “I’m just glad to be here, in whatever way you’ll have me.”
This was more emotion and honesty than Shion had ever gotten out of Nezumi about his feelings, and it felt as if a sudden, burning heat had cracked through the darkness in his heart. His memories of his summers spent as a teenager came flooding back to him, and all at once, he was back on the beach, stretched out on a scratchy beach blanket with Nezumi’s arms wrapped around him. His tail rested over Shion’s legs, comfortingly cool in the midsummer heat, and heavy in a way that reminded Shion of a weighted blanket.
Nothing about it was perfect. Shion knew this. The frustration and pain wouldn’t disappear overnight, and just because Nezumi apologized didn’t mean he was free and clear of blame. But for a few moments, wrapped in his arms, Shion understood that at least he was back and they could work through it together.
He sighed, pressed himself against Nezumi’s cool, solid body, and reveled in the realization that yes, he was back. He was back, and he wanted to be here. The shush-shush of the water in Number Six fell around them, creating a comfortable mimicry of the waves that’d collapsed over Shion’s head the day Nezumi hauled him into the ocean and tried to drown him. Shion closed his eyes, tightened his grip on Nezumi’s shoulders, and for the first time in years, could finally breathe.
