Vegans in Warsaw - Wegańska Warszawa
An "old" reborn chapter of my blog: vegan places in Warsaw. Earlier I mentioned several places of Polish capital which are either 100% vegan or serve vegan options, and here is another one.
! menu in EN/PL and my order is below
The first place in 2023 is "OCHO", address: Mikołaja Reja 9. There are plenty vegan options but it does have non-vegan meals as well so if it triggers you, don't go there. My rationale is 1) it's impossible to ignore/avoid all places which are not 100% vegan and 2) supply-demand works and the increasing interest/need from vegans is always good.
If you think the same and you are a curious foodie who are done with "proper" meals for vegans, aka smoothies and salads, definitely go to OCHO. It shares the same building with the "Ochota Theater" and it has a very colourful interior.
Tumblr media
What they have 😋 in PLN, Polish currency. I translate only vegan and vegetarian options.
I. Breakfasts:
Vegan toast with kimchi, cheddar, tomatoes, vegan mayo, nori, crispy onion, and chives - 31 PLN
Shakshuka (vegan option with avocado) with bread - 33 PLN
"Marble" pancakes, coating with white chocolate and matcha, whipped cream, and lychee (vegetarian) - 32 PLN
Vegan Okonomiyaki (Japanese savoury pancakes) with coriander mayo, Japanese mayo kewpie, pickles, sesame seeds, chives, and coriander - 29 PLN. served only on weekend.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
II. Main dishes:
Silesian sweet potato dumplings with chanterelle sauce, lemon thyme, mustard (vegetarian gluten-free) - 31 PLN
Pumpkin dumplings with peanut butter, edamame, pak choy, soy-sesame and lemongrass chili sauces (vegetarian) - 31 PLN
Vegan kimchi fries with vegan teriyaki beef, cheese sauce, gochujang mayo, chive mayo, coriander, and chives - 39 PLN
Pumpkin red curry ramen with tofu and eggs in mirin and soy sauce, carrots, cucumbers, sesame seeds, peanuts, and chives (vegetarian) - 36 PLN
Vegan cheeseburger with plum jam, caramelised red onion and lemon thyme, pickles, garlic mayo, coriander mayo + coleslaw - 39 PLN (option with fries +8 PLN)
Taco with vegan beef, ancho red beans paste, pickles, cheese sauce, corn, jalapeño mayo (vegetarian) - 34 PLN
Bao with vegan chicken in gochujang sauce, kimchi, Japanese mayo kewpie, mustard (vegetarian) - 39 PLN
Vegan Bowl: ancho red beans paste, sweet potatoes, pickles, nachos with cheese sauce, peppers, jalapeño mayo - 35 PLN
Vegan Seitan with potato puree, crispy onions, and fried cabbage - 45 PLN (traditional veganised Polish dish)
Vegan Corn Dog with jalapeño mayo, ketchup, and cucumbers - 32 PLN
Tumblr media
What I ordered... Honestly, my first intention was okonomiyaki but they run out of it so I ordered vegan kimchi toast with black coffee and it was an amazing choice 😌 You might say it's a simple toast but it was not a simple toast it was TOAST, the king of all toasts. I am writing it, and I feel this melting cheese in my mouth. The bread... mmm 😋 what can be compared to a nice crispy bread. It was heaven. I did not regret my choice.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The only downside was that we were waiting for a long time to get our food because there were so many people. On the other hand, it just proves how popular this place is and now I know why. Recommend recommend 💜
p.s. if you have other vegan places in mind which I need to go, please let me know.
LOTS of delicious FOOD to all fo you

On that radiant Saturday in July last year, my mom and I were at a small restaurant in Warsaw. He walked up to our table, said hello, and asked if we were enjoying everything. I thanked him and asked if he remembered me. Yes, he did. I used to visit often in the summer of 2022 with my sister. It had been a year since then, and I was about to head back to Kyiv in a few hours. ‘Why?’ he asked. I told him I didn’t want to miss the victory celebration. He then told me he felt the same for six long years in Syria. We were quiet for a moment, looking at each other, when my mom started to cry, and I got goosebumps. He shook my hand, mentioned he had a brother in Berlin, and said it was a great city with good food and lots of refugees. He suggested I should visit. Not right now. We said goodbye with a hug, and I asked for his name. Samir. He used to own an antique shop in Damascus and now ran a vegan restaurant with the best falafel I had ever tasted. There was even a documentary made about him. I promised to come back to Warsaw again soon.
[...]
In the last year, Russians have targeted Kyiv with over 300 various types of cruise missiles, 14 ballistic missiles, and nearly 400 ‘Shahed’ type attack UAVs. In 2023, Kyiv had 302 air raid alerts, with the total time of these alerts adding up to 16 days. You can find all these statistics on a website called Alerts Wrapped, which starkly highlights our new reality. My friends, family, and colleagues face this every day. Those working for international companies often have to keep quiet about these attacks to keep their jobs. They are feeling downhearted, worn out, and uncertain about what the future holds.
It seems like the war won’t end soon. On January 2, 2024, Ukraine faced another widespread attack. We urgently need more weapons to defend our skies and fight on the ground. My friends and I are continuously raising funds for the Ukrainian Armed Forces, knowing this is a marathon, not a sprint. Today, I’m reaching out for your support. Please follow Ukrainian news on social media, share these stories with your followers using #russiaisaterroriststate, and urge your governments to assist Ukraine. United we stand, divided we fall.

im going vegan :) or rather I'll be working on moving to that direction. I've been thinking about it for a long time, checking out studies and checking out what both sides have to say and I've made up my mind. most of my animal products consumption doesn't even come from cooking or meal prep but from take out and eating cheaply. i think living in warsaw is a great opportunity to make the switch with how many people here are vegan, there's vegan restaurants and caffes everywhere, so many vegan products r easily aviable - unlike my previous town or villages. my mom is on board too and she always was super creative with foods not, often avoiding meat just because :) im excited, I want my body to feel good and be healthier. I need to look into meal prepping and look back on my most recent blood works to see where I'm at. wish me luck everyone :) also if anyone had any tips or insight it'd be very welcome!

9 14 and 22 :)))
end of the year asks!
9. Best month of the year?
probably september! i went to the red bull event at nürburgring and had a pretty great time all around. it's also my birthday month and late summer weather is superior. (also had a situationship that ended badly, but things only went sour in october so i guess i'd still count september as v happy, even though it's a bit bittersweet in hindsight)
14. Favorite book you read this year?
i think it's a tie between bunny by mona awad and middlegame by seanan mcguire! both amazing amazing books that really inspired me to be more creative with my own writing. but i read a lot (between 50-75 books a year) so it's a tough choice
22. Favorite place you visited this year?
i didn't travel very far this year. mostly i visited friends around germany, but i also went on an excursion to poland with my uni! we went to auschwitz, warsaw and gdansk so that was pretty cool. i've never been to poland before even though it's not that far from me and i was happy to find some local cuisine veganized so i could try it :) also warsaw and gdansk are beautiful cities! highly recommend.
tysm for asking love!

La Cantina Meyhane - Lahmacun and Arabic Pizza
Here you can read my thoughts and feelings about the restaurant we held our second meeting at - La Cantina Meyhane and the gluten-free, turkish pizzas!
Tumblr media Tumblr media
~ Alex.
The restaurant we went to on January 2nd 2024, is La Cantina Meyhane, one special restaurant. It specialises in italian cuisine the same as other italian restaurants, however this one offers every position on the menu as gluten-free! It is therefore including of people who can't have gluten, as well as offers vegeterian and vegan options in there menu! About the location, it just great; so-called New Town located in the centre of Warsaw and it's really close to both metro and the bus stop!
Other than the classic pizza, the meal of the week was Lahmacun. It's a Turkish kind of pizza, which originates from Middle East - specifically from Levant region - but due to being highly popularized in Turkey, it's usually named and recognized as Turkish pizza. What's specific for this kind of pizza, is that it's not prepared with cheese and its crust is thinner. It is usually made with minced beef or lamb, minced with vegetables, and then herbs are added to it. it is usually eaten rolled up! Other than this pizza, we also tried another kind of turkish pizza - Pide Caprese!
As you can easily guess from the paragraph above, we made a good decision to order Lahmacun and Arabic pizza, as well as some classic choices: pizza e pistachio, focaccia, and capriciosa. Benath this paragraph, you can see the photo of us making these tough choices, haha (tough, because really, there were so many other, tasty-sounding options to pick from!):
Tumblr media
The wait for the pizzas didn't feel long at all to me, when they were served it felt like it was right on time :). I was really impressed with the amount of food we ordered and how good it all looked. You can see it beneath, as well as us starting to eat the pizzas <3:
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
So finally, here are my thoughts about these special pizzas <3:
First, let's talk about the Turkish pizzas! The important thing to repeat here: they are just as gluten-free as other positions in the menu at this restaurant <3:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Lahmacun - this pizza had ingredients of beef filling with traditional spices, tomatoes, onions, parsley, and lemons. I found this pizza part spicy, part sour, sometimes sweet, and I did not expect it to be as dry as it was! It's a positive aspect of it, I found the taste of this pizza very specific, very interesting, and very tasty!
Pide caprese - oval pizza with ingredients such as tomato sauce, fior di latte, tomatoes, and basil pesto. It was not as dry as the first one felt to me, and the fresh tomatoes were delicious!!! I even caught myself wondering why am I finding this one so good… Well, it's obvious, haha! The tomatoes were sweet, the shape of the pizza itself made me happy, so I can openly say I fully enjoyed eating it <3.
Now, let's move to the classic gluten-free pizzas, that were just as good <3:
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Pizza e pistachio - this pizza had ingredients of bacon, corn salad, a cheese I don't know anything about, buy which I think was delicious, and, obviously, pistachios! To be honest, I found the combination of the unidentified cheese and pistachios to be weirdly tasty, which went, suprisingly, extremely well for this pizza in my eyes, and is the reason why I think this one is my favourite!
Focaccia - I think we all know this one, I'd say it's one of the most basic pizzas to ever exist, but it still got me. It was a nice meal, a change of taste between the other pizzas, while also giving something special from its own ingredients combined together <3.
Capriciosa - the pizza with the ingredients of tomato sauce, fior di latte, ham, chorizo, eggs, dried tomatoes, mushrooms (champignons), and olives. I love the mix of mushrooms and ham, sue me, of course I loved it! And yes, again, the tomatoes of many kinds made this one ideal for me too, haha.*
This is what our table was like after we were done with these tasty-sounding (actually being, of course) options :3:
Tumblr media
All in all, I'm happy to say this meeting was one of the most interesting ones yet! Sure, it was only the second restaurant, but I found it to be a curious case for me regarding all the pizza-related surprises and new experiences <3. So, I am ending this blog post thinking this meeting was a greatly positive one, and looking into our pizza-filled future with just as big optimism!
~ Alex.
*All ingredients come from the website of the restaurant.

Polish 'pączek', the literal translation - 'doughnut' but Polish one and the American 🍩 have nothing in common. Poles like pączki so much that it is the main course on 'tłusty czwartek' (Fatty Thursday) and people compete who eats the most 😋 I found a vegan pączek in the bakery nearby but if someone from Poland can recommend their favourite bakery with vegan doughnuts, please let me know
btw, better microwave pączek for 20-30 sec. it's the best way to enjoy it

CAS PROJECT - ACTION 2/2
We have successfully completed most of the intended goals of our CAS project. We have created a profile so that we can spread the knowledge we have gained about vegan and vegetarian diets to a wider audience. As we planned in the early stages of the project's development, we published various informative posts about the benefits of the diet, restaurants around Warsaw worth visiting, vegan recipes and shops offering meat alternatives.
Although we did not initially stick to the proposed schedule, this turned out to have a positive effect on the outcome, as we had more time to think about the project and prepare the content for sharing. We received positive feedback not only from our peers, but also from other people who visited our profile. What remains to make the project a complete success is to increase the reach of our page. We have some ideas to further develop our page and continue to share our knowledge about healthy eating habits, and we hope to promote our page so that other people can also benefit from this knowledge.

CAS PROJECT - social media
We have created an instagram account called “eco ib masters” where we plan to post the places we go to and rate them. We have promoted this account on our private accounts to gain some audience.
As we have planned, we created a first post which described the purpose of this account. I attach the photo of it below:
Tumblr media
The next step is to go to some cafes in Warsaw and rate them on basis of these features. We chose these, as we believe these are the ones the most important in saving the planet, and encouraging people to engage in environmentally friendly activities:
- utensils given to consumers
- packaging of their products
- vegetarian and vegan meals
- availability of plant based milk
The next step is to choose four different cafes, each, and visit them. Afterwards, we must assess them by the criteria stated above and post some evidence photos on the instagram account.

Trip 2, day 15. I wouldn't usually write about being back in the UK but a few funny moments cropped up that are worth mentioning. I flew back to Edinburgh on my birthday, luckily it was an easy going journey this time - apart from the 3am start. I had a full row of seats to myself on the plane and had my sleeping bag in my carry-on luggage so managed a good hour of sleep.
It was nice to receive birthday wishes from the Warsaw team when I arrived in Edinburgh. I had planned to get breakfast at Black Rabbit an amazing vegan bakery that does amongst other treats a croissant muffin hybrid filled with custard and blackcurrant sauce. Unfortunately it has no seating and as I was a bit tired so I went a few doors down to another bakery to see what they had. In the window their daily special was a Polish bread, that raised a smile. More importantly they had some massive vegan cinnamon roll buns and a few seats, so I had a cinnamon roll for breakfast with some earl grey tea and picked up some goodies from Black Rabbit for my lunch - their food is good enough to carry around all morning. To wake myself up I also got a "dirty chai" which is a chai latte with and espresso shot, also very nice.
Looking for something to do on a Sunday morning I decided to visit the Edinburgh modern art gallery, a Barbara Hepworth exhibition was showing. Her work is very much to my tastes, a good balance of abstract and natural forms. In one of the rooms it explained on the wall the Hepworth had moved to Cornwall in world war two, interrupting her work as an artist to look after children and grow vegetables. This struck a chord with my current activities.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
I was too tired to do anything in the afternoon so rested at my hotel. The next morning I went back to the same bakery for breakfast, it was only myself and another customer there. He was chatting to the waitress and they were talking about how so many of their friends had birthdays that week, including his in a few days. I let the coincidence pass me by at first but as the conversation rolled on I felt obliged to let them know that not only was it my birthday the day before but I also knew a massively disproportionate number of people born in early May. It was definitely a bit of a funny moment and we analysed the probabilities of all of this, they were maths students so they couldn't help it. I assured them that Facebook can confirm about 50-60% of my "friends" are born in May or in another cluster I have towards the end of January. Way above the threshold for statistical significance. I had a train to catch so had to leave them with that mystery to chew on.
