I can't tell if it's intentional or not, but every time Freespace 2 gives me a medal when a) I have it on easy mode, and b) I know I didn't do all that well in the mission, it really feels like we're fighting for a corrupt and crumbling military dictatorship, lol. It's like in Force Commander, when you keep getting bumped up to higher and higher ranks after a mission or two and even your mentor is like "hmm..." and it genuinely feels like the higher ups are putting easily manipulated yes-men into positions of power to the ultimate detriment of the Empire because of the way the Empire is set up.

(Also, I can't tell if Freespace 2 is taking the piss or if it's being 100% sincere)

I've been enjoying That Time I Got Reincarnated As a Slime, and I realized something about the mechanics of isekai.

A big part of the fantasy is the moral superiority that comes from being benevolent at no cost to yourself and without repercussion. Like, Rimoru hasn't conquered or enslaved anyone... Because they always just happen to immediately swear eternal devotion and service to him. They just happened to independently decide to make him their absolute ruler. Rimoru doesn't have to sanction his enemies or mete out punishments, because they always immediately bow before him and beg forgiveness. The power imbalances are made palatable because they are always ostensibly occurring by the choice of his fawning underlings. The isekai protagonist's true superpower is avoiding moral ambiguity.

Perhaps this is part of why so much isekai explicitly takes place in videogame worlds. NPCs do not act like people, they act like vessels for the protagonist's fantasies. They lack agency, but they also absolve the protagonist of their exploitation.

This probably sounds like I hate Slime, but I actually think it's really good for the space it's operating within. Contrast with Overlord, which did the same thing, but so much more crassly, without the charm or character. Even a satirical take like Uncle From Another World (which I loved) isn't as far off from this as it first seems. It's just cool to check under the hood and see what makes these things tick. Isekai isn't really just stories about going to a different world; basically every Hero's Journey would qualify if that were the case. Isekai is the collection of tropes and conventions that enable the viewer to indulge in isekai fantasies.

So... Trine 5: A Clockwork Conspiracy. My recent obsession. Let's go! I'll try to do it without significant spoilers.

Carefull, long post under the cut!

First of All. Amadeuses Kids! They grew up! UWU. They're such cute little young fireball casters. Omg, that's almost like watching your nephews grow, they feel so much like a family...

That game series has been with me since I was a child and as I remember Trine (part 1) was my first (real) videogame! And now when I play Trine 5 it cures my soul so much, right when I needed it. It's like... Has a Tolkien vibe for me. I mean in the sense that It's too fairy tail outside, it may look childish, but it has layers! I really like the plot, it hit me right in the heart and made me reflect. And I was struggling with dark thoughts on Future and Trine's perspective on the global world's problems made me smile and hope for the best... Really thank you, trine team, you're awesome :D Where there's people who share your concerns and put it in the work of art like that and make witty satire on it that's precious. I have returned some of my faith in humanity now. 

Well, maybe some people may not see what I saw or just won't feel such weight, cause my recent experience made me stump on it, so well I need to say that plot in general... Dramatic. I was impressed How it manages to balance at the edge of magical fairy tail and life drama (OR that's again me and my pains. Anyway...) STRONG twists and things at stake. Heroes encounter both global threat and personal challenges (all three of them, but poor wizard, he got it the most. But he's so silly old man, I'm crying) (Zoya, my girl, I love you...) (Pontius... You're just perfect, I'm proud of you, example of a real knight :D)

Character writing is amazing, they REALLY feel alive.

For example: Amadeus marries a woman after he became a hero and throughout the whole game series he mentions that, then he mentions their kids and, like i mentioned now, now we see how they grew up! And in fifth's game due to plot he misses his triplets greatly and in the forest three heroes meet a fox with three little foxes... And Amadeus is like "oh no, I'm a terrible father" 😭

And there's a lot of cute normal or giant animals in the game series, we're helping them and then they come up and help us. Such lightsome game, I can't/// Those animals... Uwu/// (Just a little detail but I wanted to mention that...)

I. Worship. Those. Artists. They are geniuses. Screenshots speak for themself, I guess.

Design, artwork and effects... No, I can't describe it in words, again, I just pray on it. So damn enchanting. I literally dream to be like those artists who work on this series. (And that's a threat) When I think of it, well, maybe THAT magic inspired me to be who I am right now...

Magic observatory where's pictures of butterflies there and there... ARE YOU DESNAN, WIZARDS???

And those just killed me. Episode in a dark place with the sudden rays of hope... I was just. Aaaah... So beautiful both by art and location's story.  Replica of the second screenshot: "It's rare that ghosts are on our side. Usually we and undead are not on good terms." What did I tell you? :D Tolkien vibe!

So who got through my post till the end... Please, please get to know those game series. I didn't mention it at all above but It's also a genius of gameplay. It's a platformer with (some) fighting and (a lot of) puzzles. Also. It's thrice (:D) fun in coop.

AND. Music. Won't say much about it either but It's a genius magical masterpiece. I guarantee you: Trine soundtrack will find its way to your playlist.

P. S. Will I do fanart on trine? Maybe... Maybe... You know, I just have that strange thing: some stories are "sacred" in my brain so I can't Just sit and draw cause I'm constantly stressed out if it turns out bad or worse: not how I imagined it. Same with Tolkien books, btw. In fandom since childhood, (if you count that, if not - from adolescents and first steps to the internet) and no single drawing. (not single real drawing at least)

But! I have Nine Parchments fanart :D

Oooh. And. I have THEM in frame. Art from my friend who gifted it to me at postcrossing some time after we played Trine 4 (and then the whole game series) together! It was such a pleasant surprise!

I'm not in any other fandoms currently. It's rare that I get that deeply invested. 'fandom' wasn't a thing growing up? I like shows, though I am picky. I will talk media analysis all day long on even something I love! -Hence my critique of miraculous comes from a place of love not hate-

I read. Historical fiction is a favorite of mine, and some satire, Anthropology and history too. I don't read as much now that I write so much. Time!

Videogames, board games, I love engaging my mind. Hanging out in a quaint cafe/coffee shop to write is like meditation for me.

There's definitely an interesting point to be made about the pro-military sentiment of Call of Duty vs games that satirize it like Helldiver's 2. I find it really interesting, also kinda encouraging that people my age seem to really into and recognizing that message. Feels like a contrast to how military stuff was pushed via videogames when I was a kid.

I'm not disliking the fallout tv show, but I certainly could be enjoying it more (and the Amazon new ad policy isn't helping)

It feels weird cause is not like I am disappointed. I saw (or tried to) Westworld and it fucking sucked. It was the kind of fake deep plot full of blood and sex that impresses people that have little media literacy, and it annoyed me how the supposed plot twists were so obvious that I dropped it at the first season. So I wasn't expecting anything grand from the Fallout show, considering it was 1- created by the same guys, and 2- probably created due to the lawsuit Kilter Films lost to Bethesda after basically trying to create Fallout Shelter two.

But I still wanted to be proven wrong, I wanted to eat my words and be surprised. I mean, Amazon Video has a lot of great series, I'm currently watching Marvelous Mrs. Maisel and it's great. Why can't Fallout be great too?

It sucks cause it is my favorite videogame franchise (next to Castlevania, which doesn't fucking count cause it's dead), and it only shows me that just as what happened to Disco Elysium, all the games I enjoy that started as a satire and critique of capitalism, are doomed to end up replicating exactly that.

I could make an entire critique of all the things that are wrong with the show adaptation (except Norm, Norm is great and he should've been the protagonist. Getting real Fallout 1 Vault dweller vibes from him) but is just feels pointless, it feels like a waste of time. I could make a great critique of how Mrs. Maisel excels at capturing the struggles of a divorced Jewish woman trying to be a comedian in the 50s; but what can I even say about the Fallout show?? It doesn't completely suck, because granted, there are some things they managed to portray really well; but most of the show reeks of that Kilter films fake deep pretentious stench, and I hate that. I watched the show cause I love Fallout, but man I really wanted to be wrong about it.

And the worst part is that this applies to basically every single piece of media that exists nowadays. It's not supposed to provide a message, is supposed to create profits and be simple enough for people to understand it and not create TikTok videos complaining it endorses imaginary stuff. Of that I am disappointed.

A guide to the cool parts of the Warhammer 40k Fandom

So, suppose you’ve heard Henry Cavill being out of both the DC movies and The Witcher is now planning to be in a Warhammer 40k thing, or you’ve seen stuff about the upcoming Rogue Trader or Space Marine 2 videogames, or been playing Darktide, and you might be thinking “Well... maybe it’s cool, but also I’ve heard the fandom can be scary and has a Nazi problem!” this is a quick guide to finding the cool parts of the fandom.

First off, the golden rule of 40k is anyone who thinks the Imperium are “The Good Guys” and misses the satirical elements of the setting should be avoided like they’re carrying Nurgle’s Rot (that’s a really bad plague...if that wasn’t obvious).

The Imperium of Man is a fascist religious oligarchy where people live on horrible polluted shitty planets eating “corpse starch” which is exactly what it sounds like, and everyone worships a mouldering corpse on life support because if you don’t, an inquisitor might arrest you for heresy and you’ll get turned into a frankenstein’s monster robot drone. Anyone who thinks that’s cool is definitely a pile of wank. Being shitty is the whole point of the setting; if it was a nice place, I wouldn’t want to send all the nice people to get shot with guns literally called “Meltas” that do exactly what they sound like they do, or get chopped up with chainswords (that’s a chainsaw-sword! No kidding!). It’s an outrageously shitty galaxy where bad people do bad things, but it’s exaggerated to such an extent it becomes kind of cathartic or funny?

There ARE people who play 40k who are total asshats, and a minority who are nazis, it’s true, and a real issue (just last year GW had to make a statement about it when people with nazi-themed armies turned up at tournaments and despite nearly everyone at the tournaments refusing to play with them, the staff wouldn’t throw them out because of “the rules!!!” so thankfully now the rules are “no nazis” finally), but there are also lots of really great people in the hobby too, and you can find them by looking for spaces that explicitly don’t welcome them. The more cool people are in the hobby, the better!

Cool 40k Youtubers who can be a gateway into the cool part of the hobby and finding cool people in it include:

Arbitorian - Makes great lore videos and even ones commenting on the problematic elements of the setting

Snipe & Wib - Couple who are in a ska band (and so are cooler than I will ever be) and make tongue-in-cheek lore retrospectives in their Codex Compliant series.

Midwinter Minis - Chilled out painting videos and fun, easy-to-follow battle reports, not gatekeepy, so great for beginners.

Dana Howl - Really cool and unique painting videos that don’t take the hobby too seriously.

Goobertown Hobbies - The Bob Ross of Warhammer.

Oculus Imperia - This absolute legend makes incredible, atmospheric lore videos in-character as an Imperial scribe discussing the historical events of the setting, complete with character development as he gets gradually disenchanted with the state of the Imperium. Chef’s kiss.

And a cool place to get news and stuff that’s explicitly trans-friendly and doesn’t welcome the shitty side of the fandom is Goonhammer. You can find starter guides to most Games Workshop/warhammer games on there.

So hopefully... if you’re looking for a taste of grimdark but with decent folk, that’ll get you rolling. I take no responsibility if you wind up spending a ton of money on little plastic people and paints due to this.

the kids of the neighbourhood were fierce, not street-fierce but upper-class snots who ran in packs and clawed down your skin with their fingernails.

i mostly watched them from afar and tried to join in with their games occasionally but they hated me. they stole my shit. one time this one ringleader kid, an absolutely horrible girl called louise, concocted a plan where two kids asked if i could come out to play. once i reached the end of my driveway, i was pounced on by vicious, screaming children. they'd gathered the entire neighbourhood's worth of kids to hide and jump out at me and chase me. then louise claimed that because i'd said it was an "ambush" and she "didn't know what an ambush was", it never happened.

fear, sometimes, is the people in your house. sometimes, it's the people that assault you every time you step out onto the street.

though i was reviled by most of the kids my age (mostly for being the kind of kid who knew words like "reviled", or "follicle", or "bestiary"), there were a few times when i felt well enough accepted into the loose community of creatures who shared my territory. always it was with the boys. i'm afab and at the time had long curly blonde hair and i hated it. i just wanted to wear sonic tshirts and chill.

i hung out a lot with a kid called lewis. he was from australia and had a neat OC surrounding this plush dolphin he had but then he got too old for it and i felt sad. i wanted to keep talking to the dolphin. he also had a nes and all the cool mario shit, like sticker books. when lewis's parents kicked us off the nes and told us to go play outside, we'd play at being mario and luigi. i got really into it, got a red cap and customised it with ears made out of felt. made a raccoon tail to wear sticking out of the back of my pants. that was my furry awakening.

he was a good kid, chill. but as he got older he felt like he couldn't hang out with make-believing "girls" anymore. he got more into his friendship with this other kid, mark, who had a mega drive (sega genesis). hated that kid he was a dick. according to my mum he punched me in the back and left a scar but i don't remember it, even though i can feel the scar still. i tried to read judge dredd thanks to his stupid "drokk!" shirt but i could never get into it, though i like the concept of a cop satire.

we were no more than 11. the balmy summers went on, me dreaming of videogames. i don't know what he dreamt of.

i wish i could go back in time and tell him i was a make-believing boy. not that it would matter, not that we were the kind of people who would understand.
