on fandom orientalism, ft. a quick visual example:

the example on the right is something i drew solely using references of the top results i saw on pinterest upon searching "jotun loki." please don’t roast my inconsistent handwriting

south asian cultures are often jumbled together for white artists of all kinds (authors, artists, movie directors) to create a sense of mystery and make things look "more foreign."

note: this doesn't touch on the antiblack racism in canon jötun designs; this post is primarily about fandom-sourced fetishization. i heavily encourage people to reblog and add onto this post anything i may have missed or added nuance

cut: links on orientalism, in-media examples, how this manifests in fandom-made content

i'd like to start off by saying that this post is a white person telling other white people how to spot orientalism in relation to fiction. i am by no means an expert on any of this, but my goal here is to start creating a less ignorant space that doesn't push people out of fandom.

i'm just trying to stir up more conversations about this and get other white people to think more critically about how they engage with the content they consume. nerd shit should never come with a sacrifice and it's extremely upsetting to see people of color consistently forced out of fandom communities, especially when modern superhero comics began as a way for jewish people to have a voice.

if this post upsets you, i don't want to hear it. don't tell me, "it's not that deep," or, "keep politics out of comics." it is that deep, and superhero comics have always been political. if you have the urge to leave a comment or send an anon about how you don't think it's a big deal, feel free to block me instead, because i don't care and you'll just get blocked anyway 👍

with that out of the way,

there are countless ways to design a character in a way that makes it clear that they are an alien, or to make them sexy, and there is no excuse to perpetuate stereotype that put real-life people in danger to do so.

"Orientalist paintings and other forms of material culture... depict an 'exotic' and therefore racialized, feminized, and often sexualized culture from a distant land." [¹]

there are so many examples of this in loki fic and art. it's extremely common to see loki depicted as a feminine object of desire. they may have longer hair. clothing that serves more as an accessory than an outfit, that isn't suited to protect them from either the harsh cold of jötunheim or the sunburns one might get when surrounded by reflections of the sun off the snow. draped in jewelry, and in a compromising position.

i'm sure you can imagine how this can get especially out of hand in relation to thorki. i would speak more on thor's presence as both the white aesir prince or the strong barbaric jötun, but as i'm not comfortable consuming thorki content, i don't have enough context to speak on the stereotypes used outside of the art pieces i've seen while searching for jötun loki fanart.

i am, however, confident in saying that orientalism often serves as a device for fan creators to show a contrast between Asgard's white-viking-british-accent-magic-science-elegance. jötunheim, in the comics, is often portrayed as a less intelligent, cutthroat, barbaric, and bloodthirsty culture.

"There was always something unknown and uniquely different about Orients which reinforced the distinction between the European 'us' and Asian 'them.'" [²]

the green link in particular comes with a helpful tool for anyone who might be inexperienced in spotting racist themes in media. if you have trouble being confident that the media in question is orientalism, this link comes with a checklist scale to score how likely it is to be an offensive depiction.

an example that most of you will be familiar with is Disney's Aladdin (1992). the green link goes much more in-depth about the intricacies of Aladdin's orientalism, and i heavily HEAVILY encourage you to read it, as it will help fully grasp the way fetishization and demonization go hand in hand in orientalism.

here, i'd also like to use it as a comparison to show why this loki stuff is honestly... egregious.

by now, even the visuals here should seem very familiar.

the source goes on to use arranged marriage as an example of a common "trope" in orientalist fiction. as previously stated, i don't consume thorki fiction. however, i am EXTREMELY confident in making the guess that it tends to be a common theme when jötun loki is paired with an aesir thor.

i'd also heavily recommended this article and this wikipedia page, both on the negative and stereotypical portrayals of romani people; loki is a magic user, and i suspect that one of the reasons there is such heavy use of these appropriated, exaggerated, and fetishized themes and visuals is because of the demonization of romani people as tricksters, thieves, and witches.

Musing about Dreamworks

I have recently rewatched a lot of old Dreamworks stuff and I realized something: The way a lot of Dreamworks stuff breaks with the hero'e's journey is actually a really good thing.

If you watch Dreamworks movies and compare it with Disney or even Pixar, there is the quite obvious difference that for the most part Dreamworks heroes and heroines are underdogs, while Disney heroes most of the times are not. It is also the reason I think that a lot of queer folks found themselves in a lot of the Dreamworks stuff early on. I for sure can say I did. It is super easy to read a queer subtext into quite a few Dreamworks movies.

Compared to Disney there is also the fact that Dreamworks seemingly never felt the need to use their protagonist's marginalizations, when there, as a way to advertise. It was simply something that was there...

But there is this other big thing.

Disney movies for the most part very clearly follow the Hero's Journey, but in a way that they are so very married to the Status Quo. You know, often in the Hero's the Hero returns home - which Disney usually takes as "the hero returns to the Status Quo". The hero changes, but the world around them doesn't. Because Disney usually says: "The world as it is, is alright."

I could probably go into the depth of the MCU here, but to stay with animation, let's talk about Disney's one real underdog story: Aladdin. The central conflict arises in the first place because Aladdin is of a much lower status and hence cannot court Jasmin. This is basically what leads to the inciting incident and everything. So, the solution in the end is? Well, Aladdin gets a free pass. But in general there is nothing much changed about the class structure of the world.

Meanwhile almost all Dreamworks movies involve the world around the heroes changing. In Shrek the world has to learn to accept ogers. In Kung Fu Panda more than anything it is Shifu who needs to learn the lesson. In Megamind the way that the populus of Metro City treated Megamind was the issue. And most notably probably How to Train Your Dragon, where the vikings needed to learn to work with the dragons.

One can almost make the argument that Dreamworks movies in general reject the status quo. In fact, heroes that want to re-establish the status quo will need to learn that it actually was not a good thing. Be it the animals in Madagascar returning to the zoo and finding it was not at all what they remembered, or be it Puss in The Last Wish learning that his status quo (him having the many lives) was not good for him.

I can very much say that starting in my teens, when I became more interested in animation, I always liked Dreamworks Animation better than the other animation studios in the west. And yes, I quite early learned about the queer readings of Shrek for example. And I was able to well realize that Dreamworks was better in a lot of their messages than Disney was (and clearer).

But I actually never pinned down, why Dreamworks felt so much more progressive until I started to think about this recently. That Dreamworks actually allows for the world around the heroes to change and in some cases address systematic oppression.

And don't get me wrong. Like from a production side and behind the scenes, there is still a lot wrong with Dreamworks as well. They absolutely tried their best together with Disney to keep down the pay for animators and stuff. There was definitely also some cases of discrimination and bad conduct. But just from the side of what the movies themselves say? Yeah, no, I see myself a lot more in the Dreamworks stuff than anything Disney ever made.

hi there! Do you ever read any sapphic romances? Curious if so because I would love a recommendation :)

Yeah, I do! I would say that I read m/f most, f/f second, and then m/m last.

One I've really liked recently is Sierra Simone's novella in the Villain I'd Like to F... anthology (if you buy the whole anthology, it also has 3 m/f novellas and a mmf novella). It's called The Conquering of Tate the Pious, and it's a medieval romance in which this abbess of a very... interesting nunnery is basically taken captive by a lady viking type who's taken over her husband's army since his death. She's a villain protagonist, it's very erotic but also quite romantic, I would say that the dubcon is pretttyyyy light (Tate is down to clown) and there is some fucking with the hilt of a knife........

If you want something lighter, The Lady's Guide to Celestial Mechanics by Olivia Waite (who also writes other sapphic historicals) is lovely. One of the ladies is a widow, she hires the other to translate her dead husband's astronomy text, it is ON.

Mistakes Were Made by Meryl Wilsner is a really fun contemporary in which one of our ladies is a college girl who hooks up with a milf in a car--and it's supposed to be a one time thing, but said milf turns out to be her new best friend's mom!!!! Much secretive hooking up occurs. Obviously, you've gotta be down for some age diff stuff, but if you are, I'd recommend.

Queen Takes Rose by Katee Robert is a modern Sleeping Beauty retelling with a Maleficent/Aurora angle. Aurora basically has a contract with "Maleficent" (Malone), it's almost up, and oops, suddenly she has to go serve.... As a side note, the Beauty and the Beast retelling in this series is mmf with Belle, the Beast, and Gaston (not named Gaston lol) in a triad. There is a fairly extended scene in which they (especially Belle) play with Aurora. It's..... very hot. There's also non-commital sapphic content in Desperate Measures, which is an Aladdin retelling with Jafar/Jasmine in which Jasmine fucks Megara (from Hercules... who has her own mmf book with Hades and Hercules, naturally). The Sea Witch is a mff triad book with Ursula, Ariel, and Eric. Basically, the Wicked Villains series is a modern "what if the villain won" erotic romance series. A lot of people are polyamorous or open. Pretty much everyone is queer. It's fun.

I did recently read an ARC of Lex Croucher's Infamous, which is a sapphic historical romance out in March (I'll be posting my review soon). It was a 3/5 for me, but if you're looking for something that is closed door, friends to lovers, and a bit lighthearted, you might enjoy it. I prefer a bit more sex in my romances, plus some higher drama.

In April, Alexandria Bellefleur has a sapphic contemporary called the The Fiancee Farce about a romance novel cover model entering into a fake engagement with another girl--I haven't read it yet but I have an ARC and will be reviewing it! I also have an ARC of Mortal Follies, Alexis Hall's sapphic historical which is out in June and features a bad girl witch.

Um resmungo sobre como as pessoas conseguiam subir em dragões e ficarem naquela altura sem segurança alguma chamou atenção de Eylem que estava ao seu lado e a resposta da amiga fez com que ela concordasse acenando com a cabeça. Aylin odiava qualquer coisa relacionada a montar em algum animal para um passeio nas alturas, a coisa mais próxima disso que ela gostava era quando andava no tapete mágico de seu tio Aladdin. “Isso é algo extremamente bruto e tão a cara desses Vikings. Não estou cogitando nem mesmo participar daquele passeio de dragão, não vim vestida para isso.”

what's the little mermaid discourse? (if it's because disney live-action ariel is black ... i have some delightful things to tell these people about vikings and how far they traveled/how many of them were moorish.)

The discourse was about how instead of presenting the culture from where the original story came from, they wanted to give a Caribbean (aka something closer to the US) feel. Many US Americans don't know where the original tale came from, and also believe that Denmark is a bland white country with nothing exciting to put on a movie, so the Caribbean would seem 'spicier'.

Now, US Americans making movies about cultures closest to them is not a bad thing. But this case is special because Disney made sure to include the culture of origin of the live action remakes (Aladdin, Mulan etc) and when it came to Denmark... that suddenly didn't apply. I don't know what else to assume other than they thought "Denmark is too white and not interesting enough because it's probably bland and the same culture as the white culture here in the US. It's not even worth digging".

From what I remember the Disney cartoon didn't have a Caribbean atmosphere (apart from the crab and his songs, I think? I watched it in Greek so I don't exactly know) and the setting was super North European with castles etc. The creators of the cartoon, in the "making of" mentioned they knew the original story and used Denmark for inspiration. It's a bit hypocritical to toss that away in the live action version.

I would leave the same comments if the actress was super pale with red hair and blue eyes. If it was still in the Caribbean, it would still be insincere to the approach Disney supposedly wants to promote (the "staying faithful to the culture").

And lastly, human diversity doesn't exactly reflect mythical creatures. You are not going to make 1/10 of the mythical creatures of the Moors look like native Vikings because the communities interacted and mixed. Now, if the Vikings had the same creature and the Moors had the same creature and the creature populations also mixed then yeah it makes sense for diversity to exist there. (Or if one of the human groups started depicting the creatures that way, that would also be respected).

I want people to remember that mythology creatures are not necessarily universal nor interchangeable, Chinese dragons are not also Scottish, the Nigerian Egbere is not also Norse and the Greek Medusa is not also Korean. There are even changes between creatures in neighboring countries. All in all, the diversity of folklore is real.

In the cartoon that is remade, Ariel is the daughter of Triton, a Greek sea demigod, and his wife was Amphitrite according to Greek culture. Their names are Greek and their depictions show them well... white, as the people of the culture that worshiped them.

In a similar fashion, Chinese deities look East Asian, Nigerian deities look Black Subsaharan African, and Indian deities look South Asian. It's an iconography thing, undeniably part of heritages around the world and representative of the native peoples. I doubt Disney should be the one to decide those depictions.

So, following the iconography of the Greek culture, it's unlikely that the Greeks would picture their daughters as anything else than native Mediterranean. And because of ancient Greek beauty standards, they would choose blond or red hair if they wanted the mermaids to be "exotic". I don't agree with these beauty standards (and I don't comply with them myself) but it is what it is, I can't change history.

However, if you want to speak in human terms, the red hair + blue eyes are extremely rare to the region and that makes Ariel's depiction in the cartoon unrealistic, as well.

But in the cartoon, Greek mythology is mixed with Danish elements because Hans Christian Andersen was Danish and red hair is quite present there, compared to the rest of the world. So... eh... not that a big of diversion if they made that mix. And if the original story of The Little Mermaid was taking place in a Black country or had such influences, it would also be logical to mix some local Black elements and appearances with Greek mythology.

If Triton has Ariel with a Black mermaid in the Caribbean then it would make sense for Ariel to be "biracial" and there is a chance she would look like the actress of the remake. If Ariel's family is like this then the current actress will be fine. If they make the whole family of Ariel Black mermaids from the Caribbean (aka not Triton and Amphitrite together) and Ariel is also Black, then fine, as well.

But my point would still stand. Why not make the story Danish since it's actually a Danish story? (Greek mythology has been done to death and horribly, pls leave us alone :'( ) I would have a problem even if Disney took the story to Germany instead of Denmark because, for me, that also shows a lack of cultural consciousness and a belief that European countries are interchangeable.

If the moviemakers go for "actually Triton and Amphitrite are Caribbean" it would be laughable because 1) Disney will take important ancient figures from the Greek culture and pass them as figures of another culture (and more recent culture, if we speak of the Black cultures in the Caribbean) 2) Disney will treat the Caribbean folks as needing of the Greek mythology to be worthy of representation in their movies. People in the area have folk tales and creatures of their own. An outsider can't just give them demigods they never had or invoked. (I mean that they didn't have Triton and Amphitrite specifically).

Edit for correction: Amphitrite is Triton's mother and not wife! But because there was no wife present in what I searched I assumed there were versions where Amphitrite was his wife based on some other searches. I have found names of his children but not their mothers. The mothers could possibly be the nymphs or neirieids of Greek mythology.
