elegant and cohesive, it's clear that a lot of thought was put into the world and culture of jötunheim. every design is distinct and filled with personality while still maintaining a singular aesthetic. looking at these designs together, it's easy to imagine how the characters might interact with each other and their vibrant world.

looking at this design, it's easy to tell how much love, time, and effort was put into it. with elements that mirror loki's canon moteifs altered in ways that feel cozy, it's undeniable that there was a lot of thought put into the jötnar as a people. they mirror asgard in a way that directly contrasts the claims we see the aesir make of them, while still feeling like a separate and distinct culture with their personalized magic, unique horns, and clear social dynamics

while deceptively simple, this design is thoughtful and paints a very different picture of jötunheim than we are used to seeing in canon. this design implies a combination of mythologies, which we are very used to in marvel, while giving love and thought to a vivid world of religion which is not often given the same respect as norse or greek mythology. protected from the weather in a way that would not make a temperature-sensitive frost giant overheat, loki's design is full of love for both fantasy, and the very real people who often inspire it 💞

it means the world to me that as many people participated as they did and i really hope that this contest helped make this fandom a more inclusive space in some way

picking the winners for this was SO DIFFICULT. so under the cut, i have also enthused about some of the submitted designs because i wanted to be able to share my thoughts on more of them. i'm so sorry that i wasn't able to get to everyone!!

red tichel!!! was this a callback to loki's red hair in mythology? I AM IN LOVE EITHER WAY!!!

i know it's based on a canon design and russian ashkenazi fashion but the hair jewelry just looks so in-place here. if it was cold enough outside that i needed to layer my clothes then i too would prefer to wear my metals in my hair where it wouldn't feel cold against my skin

and the idea of loki in bronze instead of gold is one that i adore. i associate gold so heavily with asgard AND with loki that whenever i try to design jötun lokis, it's incredibly difficult to pick whether to use gold or not. bronze is the PERFECT solution to this

okay cuteness aggression aside i think this is such a smart idea for the jötnar.

it helps with that balance of showing them in minimal clothing to get across their lack of sensitivity to the cold while also actually protecting them from the snow they are likely at least knee-deep in half the time

Jotun Loki for @jotun-design-party

Loki clothes are inspired by this discussion where Jotun clothing is inspired by Henin period clothes. The cut of the clothing is meant to emulate snowflakes or icy shapes that occur in nature.

Wanted to go against the typical barbarian brutes Jotuns are so often depicted and have it be so they are a people that have diverse culture. Jotunheim is a winter-y world, but it still has flora and fauna. Leather and fur is probably something Jotun use in abundance, but they have silks, cottons and flax fabrics they know how to utilize. Again, an idea I really like is them knowing how to weave things that result in beautiful unique patterns that are inspired by the nature around them.

A jotun!Loki design for @jotun-design-party contest! I was doing a reread of defenders so thats the loki im channeling, along with mr tumnus ass vibes. Design notes: 1. Ridges under chest and on forearms. Rocky raised skin on shoulders and sides of torso. 2. Blue, blue green highlights, mostly gold details including beaded earrings (click clack easy to diy) and gold ornament on forehead, held by leather straps going around the horns (made of ice) 3. Goat legs. nothing else about them is practical for the winter. honestly idk if those hooves are either but hooves 4. Markings are reminiscent of their armor 5. I stared a lot at the claymation yeti from that one rudolph movie, and at mr tumnus

my (simple) design for @jotun-design-party ! I couldn’t decide between small choices so I just did them all lol

I based my design off some simple norse AND mayan clothing (I’ve been doing some research into my heritage and I got inspired ig) some of my hcs about jotnar include them being cold (obvs) and they can probably handle the cold BUT wind and water is still a thing so they would want protection from the wind and to not be wet right? also, lighter colors bc it’s easier to blend in, but I feel like loki would still wear dark colors anyway bc why not? I also couldn’t decide if I wanted loki with organic horns or a headpiece, or if I wanted his hair tied up or down, so I did versions with both

kinda simple but I did an oops and tried to do four versions and I’m tired

This is my design for the @jotun-design-party :)

My hcs are: Jotunhiem is bigger than Asgard and its core (the central territories where frost giants live) is the coldest place of the planet. This part of land is surrounded by at least a half circle of mountains (where mountain giants live ofc) that stops in part the coldest winds coming from the center and makes possible the existence of a warmer ecosystem with forests of trees that arent evergreen. Every "zone" of Jotunhiem experiences seasonal changes, just in different ways, as the frost giants lands are always going to be colder. Thats why loki is wearing a summer oufit that's still pretty warm + a thermal suit (cause he's only half jotun in my hc and so he needs a lil help thermoregulating his body heat). The orange parts is bronze (i just didnt really know how to color that💀), the blue is embroidery and the rest is chainmail. Its not a practical oufit in my mind but more cerimonial. I suck at drawing feet may the lord forgive me.

(My inspirations were Inuit fashion, medieval fashion and ppl from the alps i can see from my window)

I got inspired by MCU Loki’s story in general, cuz he’s not that bad of a guy…he’s just doomed by the narrative. I also knew that I wanted them to have a massive emphasis on their genderfluidity because the series did jack shit. Much like Jessica Rabbit herself, this Loki is a passionate person and is all about their partner. They still do their usual mischief, but it’s less murderous or silly and a lot more flirty. They’re well known for walking into bars and starting fights just by winking and blowing kisses at a group of clearly drunk men and just sit and watch the chaos.

❅Jotun Loki Design❅

my submissions for @jotun-design-party, though i don't know if it's too late (deadline was december 17th, and it it still dec 17 for me {by less than an hour} but idk if it is for it). If i missed the deadline, i'm sorry.

I had been looking forward to this for several months (and even started a separate jotun loki design months ago in preparation/excitement), but i just haven't been able to do much as of late. Which is sad. And while i had been planning to enter the contest for months, as it drew nearer i realized i probably wouldn't be able to. Which was very sad, because this is one of the only things i've actually looked forward to in forever :(.

As such, though, i really didn't want this oppurtunity to go to waste, like so many others i've had to, and especially in light of magpiemurder going to leave its account soon, i just decided i'd have to push though and do it. I spent pretty much all of today just drawing drawing drawing. Traditional sketched, and then "quickly" added colour digitally (it took several hours as well).

also. all the designs are supposed to be symmetrical (save design 四 and the nails in designs 三&四), so if you see any mistakes... sshhh

More on designs:

一: average battle outfit made from thick, rubbery frost beast leather

二: ceremonial battle armour, used in head shaving ceremony and first battle of a war. Made from thick and (some) thin leather, as well as some mercury metal rings, beads, and bone

三: average every-day wear (inside the city). made of fur, cloth woven from fur, thin leather mercury and bone.

四: average every-day wear (inside city). Likely for around-city wear, not relaxing indoors, due to the uncomfortableness of the beads. Made of fur fabric, fur, thin leather, beads, some bone.

五: average everyday wear (inside city). By far my favourite. For the loincloth, i tried making it look like celtic knots that start right at the top, then sort of get looser and "fade-out" at the end. Thin leather, fur fabric, bone, beads, possibly mercury metal rings.

六: everyday travel wear (outside of city). Not made for warmth, but for protection agains the elements (sharp stone, cutting blizzards, etc). Thick leather, mercury rings. Since loki is royalty, the under layer on theirs is made of black fish scale (the rarest) (also it's supposed to be slightly iridescent but i couldn't do that). For less lavish options, under layers could be made of simply thinner leather, fabric, or a nothing. The nothing option has the jotun wearing it craft an under layer out of ice, and allows for more skin avaliable to make ice for other uses. Also notice how lokis gloves leave the palm bear; this is to allow for the ability to still make ice.

also wanted to say pretty much any of these outfits could be worn with cloaks (save design 一) but i didn't draw them

also: i wanted to do another outfit, a traditional wedding attire. I imagine the jotnar wouldn't actually wear clothes for a wedding, but rather make their own covering out of their own ice. Being their own design, it shows their partner "who they are", and the transparency of the ice represents vulnerability and transparency (in communication; honesty).

Clearly I have a slight obsession with this man. This is the inktober sketch I did which I have fixed up in procreate. Honestly marvel did not give us enough jotun Loki because they are beautiful.

Because we do not have enough jotun Loki I’m not sure I got their facial markings right but I’m still pretty happy with this drawing. Though if the background looks lazy I’m sorry I ran out of ideas.

on fandom orientalism, ft. a quick visual example:

the example on the right is something i drew solely using references of the top results i saw on pinterest upon searching "jotun loki." please don’t roast my inconsistent handwriting

south asian cultures are often jumbled together for white artists of all kinds (authors, artists, movie directors) to create a sense of mystery and make things look "more foreign."

note: this doesn't touch on the antiblack racism in canon jötun designs; this post is primarily about fandom-sourced fetishization. i heavily encourage people to reblog and add onto this post anything i may have missed or added nuance

cut: links on orientalism, in-media examples, how this manifests in fandom-made content

i'd like to start off by saying that this post is a white person telling other white people how to spot orientalism in relation to fiction. i am by no means an expert on any of this, but my goal here is to start creating a less ignorant space that doesn't push people out of fandom.

i'm just trying to stir up more conversations about this and get other white people to think more critically about how they engage with the content they consume. nerd shit should never come with a sacrifice and it's extremely upsetting to see people of color consistently forced out of fandom communities, especially when modern superhero comics began as a way for jewish people to have a voice.

if this post upsets you, i don't want to hear it. don't tell me, "it's not that deep," or, "keep politics out of comics." it is that deep, and superhero comics have always been political. if you have the urge to leave a comment or send an anon about how you don't think it's a big deal, feel free to block me instead, because i don't care and you'll just get blocked anyway 👍

with that out of the way,

there are countless ways to design a character in a way that makes it clear that they are an alien, or to make them sexy, and there is no excuse to perpetuate stereotype that put real-life people in danger to do so.

"Orientalist paintings and other forms of material culture... depict an 'exotic' and therefore racialized, feminized, and often sexualized culture from a distant land." [¹]

there are so many examples of this in loki fic and art. it's extremely common to see loki depicted as a feminine object of desire. they may have longer hair. clothing that serves more as an accessory than an outfit, that isn't suited to protect them from either the harsh cold of jötunheim or the sunburns one might get when surrounded by reflections of the sun off the snow. draped in jewelry, and in a compromising position.

i'm sure you can imagine how this can get especially out of hand in relation to thorki. i would speak more on thor's presence as both the white aesir prince or the strong barbaric jötun, but as i'm not comfortable consuming thorki content, i don't have enough context to speak on the stereotypes used outside of the art pieces i've seen while searching for jötun loki fanart.

i am, however, confident in saying that orientalism often serves as a device for fan creators to show a contrast between Asgard's white-viking-british-accent-magic-science-elegance. jötunheim, in the comics, is often portrayed as a less intelligent, cutthroat, barbaric, and bloodthirsty culture.

"There was always something unknown and uniquely different about Orients which reinforced the distinction between the European 'us' and Asian 'them.'" [²]

the green link in particular comes with a helpful tool for anyone who might be inexperienced in spotting racist themes in media. if you have trouble being confident that the media in question is orientalism, this link comes with a checklist scale to score how likely it is to be an offensive depiction.

an example that most of you will be familiar with is Disney's Aladdin (1992). the green link goes much more in-depth about the intricacies of Aladdin's orientalism, and i heavily HEAVILY encourage you to read it, as it will help fully grasp the way fetishization and demonization go hand in hand in orientalism.

here, i'd also like to use it as a comparison to show why this loki stuff is honestly... egregious.

by now, even the visuals here should seem very familiar.

the source goes on to use arranged marriage as an example of a common "trope" in orientalist fiction. as previously stated, i don't consume thorki fiction. however, i am EXTREMELY confident in making the guess that it tends to be a common theme when jötun loki is paired with an aesir thor.

i'd also heavily recommended this article and this wikipedia page, both on the negative and stereotypical portrayals of romani people; loki is a magic user, and i suspect that one of the reasons there is such heavy use of these appropriated, exaggerated, and fetishized themes and visuals is because of the demonization of romani people as tricksters, thieves, and witches.

In The Dark

"The fridge is packed, there's a big box of your favorite cookies in the top shelf, and I left extra blankets in your closet" Natasha soothed you, caressing your head, "We won't be out long, but there's surely going to be a storm, I want you to be ok" you nodded, holding back tears.

"Just come back, safe Natasha" she was like your older sister, she took care of you when she found you, and she acknowledged your Astraphobia when you met Thor and he made a couple thunder echo in the sky.

"I promise" she closed the promise by getting your foreheads close then a small peck to your head, "Please take care and use the box" she relaxed when you nodded.

After that you went back to your room, unaware of that while you were leaving, the elevator doors opened.

"Hey guys! This is my brother Loki!" Thor came into the common room with the giant next to him, luckily the ceiling was high enough.

"Thor, we have a mission, we talked about this" Tony asked rather obvious making the god realize, "Oh right, I'm so sorry, I forgot that was today" he hit his forehead, "It won't take long, could you wait up here brother?" Loki looked around, seeing a few weird faces, "Uh, I can come back another day" the giant stepped back.

"Actually, please stay, my sister is in her room, so you won't be alone. Besides, it's a short mission, in and out, we'll be back before you know it" Natasha smiled and patted Loki's arm, reassuring him.

Loki watched them go, feeling quite small within the seemingly empty compound. He knew he had a room there; Thor had prepared it for him in case he decided to join the avengers, which he hadn't once considered, it just wasn't his area.

There was a sign on the door with the runes that made up his name, he smiled a little at the detail before opening the door. The room was huge for a human, but perfect for him, it had all the necessary climate settings, a large bed, even the bathroom was designed for him.

He felt both welcome and uncomfortable.

"Nat?" your voice broke when seeing no one, only the giant in the corner, "They haven't returned yet" Loki softened his tone, "And you?" You sounded like a little girl, your hands were shaking, you were scared.

The hours flew by, and none had returned yet. Loki sat on an armchair to watch the snow blow away with the wind, the wind whistling intensely against the structure, thunder crashing between the sound of the gale.

But when a bigger sound was heard, Loki heard a door open, hurried footsteps down the staircase, to finally see your figure, wrapped up in a blanket, run to the center of the room.

"Loki, I'm Thor's brother" he approached you slowly so as not to trigger a panic attack in you, "We met in Tony’s Christmas party a couple years ago” now you remembered him, “You weren’t blue then” you pointed to his arm, “This…this is how I truly look like” he admitted sheepishly, taking his hand out in front of you.

You took a few steps closer to his hand, following his markings with your fingertips up to his shoulder, “I’m Y/n” you smiled softly, your eyes scanning his ruby red ones. “Nice to meet you little one” another thunder echoed at the distance, making you jump and gasp loudly.

“Are you… scared of the storm?” you shook your head and backed away from him, looking back to the hallway as you ran back to your room. The loud steps of the giant followed you until he was back to be in front of his room, only that on the opposite side there was your room.

He didn’t want to disturb you, so he just went to his room to rest a little. But he wasn’t going to rest that much.

"Mom? ... Mommy? Where are you?" You screamed through the door, but the storm outside the shed was too intense for your little voice to be heard. The shining of the beacons in the sky gave you an air of hope for some salvation, but then the shots came, the bullets were fired into the air, the sound was intertwined with the thunder of the explosions in the distance.

The wind destroyed one of the boards to your right, the pieces ripping a chunk of the flesh off your arm in the process.

Snow seeped into the shed, and the icy wind only made the situation worse. Your fingers were purple from the cold, you no longer felt your legs because they were buried in the snow.

"Mommy?" you whispered when you saw someone tear the door open, her expression of concern and surprise gave you that impression, however the redhead only held you in her arms after a few seconds of consideration before running off with you.

The next thunder was the loudest, causing you to scream and run all the way to Loki’s room, which door you swung open, he sat on the edge of the bed facing you and the tears rolling down your cheeks, so he opened his arms to you, then you ran to his chest, your arms hugging his torso as much as you could.

“Darling, It’s ok, I’m here” he heard you sobbing against his neck and his heart clenched, hard. He then looked around and found an audio system, using his seiðr he turned it on, “Y/n, may I have this dance?” he got up gently, leading you to the side of the bed facing the window, making slow music fill the air.

He brought you to his chest, one hand held yours and the other kept your body close to his on your lower back, your body felt small next to his, however being surrounded by him brought you an immeasurable peace.

The sound of the blizzard was drowned out by the music and the strong beating of his heart, which you heard loud and clear with your ear pressed against his chest.

He was leading you to swing from side to side, you followed the movements of his body to the beat of the song. When the verse started a change in melody, Loki held your hips and lifted you into the air, your face level with his, he placed his arm under your legs to hold you in that position.

“I had all and then most of you

Some and now none of you”

You laughed, that made his heart skip a beat, your amused giggle not paying attention to the storm, those sparkling, beautiful eyes that had captured his soul at that party. The feelings were coming back to him.

The gaze broken like his heart, the scars on his nose and his face, the burns on your hands and arm, you and he were as screwed up as a broken window, and yet you felt whole, complemented by the gentleness.

He did not judge you, nor did he look down on you for the disaster you seemed, he just opened his arms to you without thinking.

It was when his head tilted slightly to the side, his nose gently brushed against yours and your lips connected with his. It was not rushed, he took his time enjoying your kisses and the small caresses that your hands gave him on the back of his neck, feeling how you enjoyed him tangling your fingers in his hair.

“When the night was full of terrors

And your eyes were filled with tears

When you had not touched me yet

Oh, take me back to the night we met”

Loki chuckled to himself, accommodating his body against the mattress, pulling you even closer if that was possible, “Why the hell is still snowing?!” he heard Sam curse at the distance. While he grinned he made the wind blow harder, making you curl up against him even more. He wasn’t going to abuse of your phobia, but he surely was going to use it as an excuse to ask you for another dance.

Alright, so thoughts about the assistant commanders (Names are Placeholders and stories are not final because it's hard to decide on a given story path when there are always so many good options):

Lord Fenquin, the Hero of Shaemoor is a close friend of Lord Faren and aids Logan Thackeray in fighting the white mantle that is infiltrating Krytan Politics. An excellent swordfighter and apt sneaky person. Joins the Order of Whispers. I'm not saying that he, Demmi and Lord Fared form an excellent team of superspies because they would be better without Faren. Unfortunately that guy just has the uncanny ability of showing up in places you didn't expect, which in this case means their missions. Fenquin isn't doing much fieldwork with the pact until Heart of Thorns where he accompanies Faren on his jungle adventures that ultimately lead to Dragon's Stand.

1325 Snaff-Price winner Posh. Their revolutionary interspatial translocator earned them the title of Snaff-Savant and the determination with which they beat up the inquest earned them Zojjas respect. Professor Gorr'a finding are deeply deeply worrying to them and they join up with the Durmand Priory at the first possibility. With the founding of the pact, Posh comfortably settles themselves as head of r&d. Briefly goes rogue during season 1 and helps scarlet create the steam creatures (because the infinity ball story is just too cool to not make an appearance here) but realises they are on the bad side when Scarlet starts obliterating Lions Arch. They have lost trust however and so they involuntarily avoid going down with the pact fleet in maguuma, instead moving in afterwards alongside the commander.

Yorg the Slayer of Issormir is a Norn rich in strength, size and hidden cunning. His renowned party trick of smashing rocks is more attributed to clever use of elemental magic than pure muscle. He is determined to fulfill the prophesy and destroy the dragons tooth, but does not shy away from asking for help in this endeavor. Thus he makes many allies amongst other races, like Jotun, Charr and Grawl. Ultimately none of them offered the power to achieve his goal (tho I would love to see the faces of everyone when he drove that charr tank into the great hall), but by that point he was so well known for beating up sons of svarnir that the vigil approached him and asked if he would like to work for them. He gladly accepted and would quickly turn his fame into rank. He was among the soldiers who retook claw island which is where he met Valoop for the first time. Pretty much plays second fiddle to the commander from there on.

Legionnaire Ruck Steelforge lost most of his warband fighting Barradin and, in true Iron Legion manner, rebuilds it through shooting ghosts with his newly developed ghostbore rifle. He works with the blood legion on developing artillery based on the design and later with the sentinels to adapt the cannons to work on branded. Though it proved impossible to convert the weapons from ghost to branded destroying their raw explosive power still proved to effectively annihilate groups of branded creatures. The Vigil, who had kept a close eye on Sentinel operations, were interested in getting these guns for their own dragon bashing business and offered Ruck and his warband to join them. Ruck accepted and would proceed to develop and operate artillery and defensive structures for the vigil and later the pact. He had a huge hand in the construction of Fort Trinity, worked with Posh on developing the Pact Megalasers and was the one who turned Zojjas plans for the MEGA-LIT cannon into a working weapon.

The Valiant Aluen born with the very vague wyld hunt of "uncovering hidden knowledge" which has her repeatedly run into the Knight of Embers, which seems to be drawn to the same things as her. When Malyck shows up both Aluen and the Knight of Embers recognize his importance. They discover his origins through the help of Amaranda the Lonesome. Aluen manages to kill the Knight before she can tell the other courtiers about the discovery, though only by donning Bercilak's green armor which is still tainted by nightmare which cuts her off from the dream and thus ends her wyld hunt. Left without a clear purpose she elects to stay with Trahearne and help him fullfil his wyld hunt.
