Kibbe Body Typing Tips
12 bits of advice covering type distinctions, signature characteristics, subtypes, yin-yang balance, typing men, first impressions, bones vs flesh, kibbegories in specific social realms, and proportions.
- every type immediately shows their signature characteristics when you put them in classic clothing (since it’s the most neutral style). say, a minimal, long-sleeved shirt that hugs the body with a round neckline. the tautness/asymmetry and long bones of dramatics will show, the dynamic bulkiness and athletic body of naturals will show, the petiteness and square body of gamine will show, the extreme curviness and short limbs of romantic will show. except classics: they blend in perfectly, you seemingly can’t point out anything at all.
- naturals appear top-heavy (wide shoulders and chest/ribcage) while dramatics can actually have broader hips and thighs — seemingly. in fact it’s just because their shoulders and torso are so narrow and their proportions always have some kind of asymmetry. in fact, their hips and thighs are rather small, it’s just the contrast to the even narrower torso. that’s how you can tell them from classics whose shoulders and hips line up very evenly.
- what you see first determines the subtype. see the bone structure first (e.g. fingers)? yang subtype or pure yang. see the flesh first (e.g. cheeks)? yin subtype or pure yin. what other people tell you as a first impression is the surefire way to know. do they point out your long legs right away? that’s bone structure, you have a more dramatic slant, so D/FN/DC/FG.
- don’t forget that gamine is never pure yang. there will always be yin features in the mix, like soft upper arms or an hourglass figure. the important part is that these features are random and you’re perceived as very small, compact.
- typing guys becomes easier when you use the type-casting method rather than relying on the scarce male kibbe type material that’s out there. what type of movie would he be perfect for? if he could easily be an elf, rocker, or a villain, dramatic (lee pace, keanu reeves). if he’s great in action or medieval genres, natural (pedro pascal, idris elba, c. hemsworth). if he’s a perfect heartthrob, romantic (mb jordan, rob lowe, jimin). if he’d fit any teen comedy, gamine (zac efron, tom holland). if you could put him in a suit and he’d do anything, classic.
- the current worldwide trend and style era in terms of clothes you can buy in your local stores is soft natural. if you have that type, you likely didn’t run into any problems yet, fitting and budget-wise. the more experimental fashion caters toward flamboyant gamine. the types that will struggle the most with what’s available are dramatics and romantics with their subtypes. you end up in very specialized stores or needing to look toward high fashion.
- type facial features last rather than first, and not entirely up close. what’s more important is seeing whether the head is smaller by proportion (dramatic and natural), sort of indistinguishable (classic), or slightly larger (romantic and gamine). the head in and of itself might not be out of the ordinary, it’s about how the torso and the vertical line relate to it.
- naturals appear to have wide bones because there are no sharp points creating the illusion of slimness. that’s why dramatics often have V-shaped jaws where the chin is the farthest point while the chin area of flamboyant naturals appears much flatter from below, making the face seem wide. you look toward either side rather than to the middle which is the fundamental difference between blunt yang and sharp yang.
- dramatics and flamboyant naturals meddle on the runways of the world. meanwhile, instagram favors theatrical romantics. which world you’d rather be able to sort of blend into tells you a lot about your yin/yang amount or someone you’re typing. if you don’t fit into either realm completely no matter what you did, you’re a classic or gamine. classics would blend more into a circle of royals or socialites, and gamines literally every subculture or non-hollywood industry (see k-pop or british punk, yungblud is a perfect example).
- the exception is soft dramatic. they’re not stark- and straight-looking like a model, not athletic nor curvy/small enough for instagram, too tall and mature-looking for subcultures/alternative entertainment, and often too sensual for royalty. the place where they fit in the most is any red carpet by far. soft dramatics do expressive ball gowns like no other type.
- soft gamines have a more boxy shape overall, romantics on the other hand have extreme differences between shoulders, waist, hips. romantics look delicate, soft gamines are sturdy. you immediately look at their huge eyes and unique face. meanwhile, romantics draw instant attention to the waist as their signature element. while their face is perceived as more uniform, everything being so soft. soft gamines could have strong chins and more chiseled noses, strong calves, wider palms. with a romantic, you rather see how short and small the bones are, even if soft gamines can be much more petite!
- perceived age is also a dead giveaway. classics and especially dramatics always look more mature, with soft classic being the only exception. naturals appear sort of in between, refreshing but also grounded. gamines and romantics always look younger. especially gamines, they’re the peter pan of the kibbe system.

a very, very basic introduction to medical astrology
Medicine was among the first and most popular applications of astrology until the 18th century. In its various forms, it was practiced widely across the Middle East, Western Asia and much of Europe. The medical astrology we know today follows mostly Indian, Egyptian, & Greek traditions and was further developed for modern use by Italian occultists and physicians of the 17th century who called it iatromathematics. Due to its origin at the intersection of ancient medicine & philosophy, medical astrology is one of the core defining bodies of knowledge which astrology as a whole is built upon.
Medical astrology was used to delineate an individual’s bodily constitution, strengths, vulnerabilities, and the nature of their physical reactivity to their environment. To analyze a birth chart from a medical perspective means to measure the potential biological effects of astrological arrangements with extreme precision and attention to detail; medical astrologers used every possible indicator to make concrete diagnoses, including the signs, their decans & terms, the planets, their declinations, dispositors, & trajectories, the houses & their lords, aspects, midpoints, and symbolic degrees. In order for this branch of astrology to be useful, such strict precision is absolutely necessary. When practitioners in the mid-1700s tried to over-simplify it, it became largely inaccurate & disreputable and fell out of common practice.
The principles of medical astrology originate within a conceptual system of congruence and essential similarity between all expressions of biology. The ancient Greeks characterized all natural phenomena using four fundamental qualities: hot, cold, wet, and dry. These qualities were a predominant influence on the formation of medical astrology (and astrology in general). Hot: warm, bright, changeable, rapid, expansive Cold: cool, dark, deliberate, constant, conservative Wet: moist, soft, malleable, formless, mixable Dry: parched, hard, brittle, well-defined, solid
The most dynamic measurement of the nature of these qualities is based on their combined actualization, established with Aristotle’s theory of “being and becoming” which followed a model of the four seasons. Hippocrates’ four humors were, in part, a version of those combinations applied to the body. The humors and classical elements developed alongside each other, and came to represent not only corporeal occurrences but also human temperaments.
Aristotle’s model: Spring: wet becoming hot Summer: hot becoming dry Autumn: dry becoming cold Winter: cold becoming wet
Humors | Elements | Temperaments, as informed by Aristotle’s model: Hot & dry: yellow bile (choler) | fire | choleric temperament Cold & dry: black bile (melancholy) | earth | melancholic temperament Hot & wet: blood (sanguis) | air | sanguine temperament Cold & wet: phlegm | water | phlegmatic temperament
This structure is the root of most medical associations in astrology. The body is understood through the lens of these qualities, and so are the planets and astrological signs; their correlations are a result of their congruent categorization, in addition to symbolism, mythology, chemistry, and general observation. A simple example of this would be blood -- a literally warm and wet substance, ruled by a hot/wet (air) sign, Aquarius. Bones, on the other hand, are literally dry, solid, well-defined, and long-lasting -- suited to the attitude of Saturn. The correspondences are much more complex than this, of course, but the basic idea is that there is an apparent alignment of physical reality with astrological energy. From there, astrologers developed a system of astro-physical rulerships.
*The sources I used for these rulerships drew from multiple separate practices ranging from traditional Vedic to medieval European, often presented through a contemporary perspective. I tried to narrow it down and stay consistent despite that, but some of the more specific associations are not broadly supported.
PHYSICAL RULERSHIPS:
ARIES: head, skull, cranium, brain, pineal gland, pituitary gland, face, eyes, nose, muscles, adrenal glands. TAURUS: ears, neck, throat, vocal cords, jaw, chin, mouth, lips, tonsils, tongue, thyroid gland, jugular nerve/vein, larynx, eustachian tubes. GEMINI: shoulders, arms, hands, fingers, nervous system, lungs, airways, bronchi, trachea, thymus gland. CANCER: chest, rib cage, breastbone, breasts, mammary glands, diaphragm, alimentary system, stomach, solar plexus, pancreas, ovaries, uterus. LEO: heart, spine (spinal cord, spinal column), upper back, circulation. VIRGO: hands, fingers, nails, nervous system, dorsal nerves, abdomen, pancreas, spleen, intestines, bowels, liver. LIBRA: equilibrium, bodily symmetry, lower back, loins, lumbar region, buttocks, kidneys, endocrine system, blood vessels, skin. SCORPIO: appendix, excretory system, urinary system, bladder, urethra, anus, colon, rectum, prostate, cervix, genitals. SAGITTARIUS: hips, thighs, sciatic nerve, liver, iliac arteries & veins. CAPRICORN: skeletal system, bones, teeth, knees, joints, structural & connective tissue, scar tissue, cartilage, skin, hair, gallbladder. AQUARIUS: calves, shins, ankles, joints, circulatory system, blood. PISCES: feet, toes, lymphatic system & lymph nodes, sweat glands, fat tissue.
SUN: vitality, heart, aorta, arteries & veins, blood, circulation, circulatory system, marrow, spine (spinal cord, spinal column), spinal fluid, cerebrovascular system, eyes, right eye of males, left eye of females. MOON: chest, chest cavity, rib cage & ribs, glandular tissue, mammary glands, breasts, breastbone, sweat glands, lymphatic glands, lymphatic system, lymph nodes, spleen, saliva & salivary glands, pineal gland, ovaries, uterus, pancreas, stomach, digestive system, nutrition, pregnancy & birth, infant & child growth, puberty, left eye of males, right eye of females. BOTH SUN & MOON rule the circadian rhythm; sun is associated with wakefulness & consciousness while the moon is associated with sleep. MERCURY: brain, nervous system, nerves, vagus nerve, shoulders, arms, hands, fingers, lungs, trachea, respiratory system, speech, senses, cognition. VENUS: ears, eustachian tubes, cheeks, chin, lips, gums, tongue, taste buds, neck, throat, esophagus, vocal cords, alimentary system, thyroid gland, thymus gland, kidneys, fat tissue, skin, pores, hair follicles, senses, female anatomy. MARS: sinuses, nose, gallbladder, bile, bile ducts, hair, nails, muscles, sinews, tendons, genitals, appendix, pelvis, male anatomy. JUPITER: right ear, cell growth, endocrine system, adrenal glands, pituitary gland, pineal gland, liver, pleura, sciatic nerve, legs, thighs, calves, feet, toes. SATURN: left ear, teeth, skin, structural & connective tissue, scar tissue, veins, bones, skull, skeleton, cartilage, joints, elbows, knees.
CARDINAL: short, intense, singular, and momentous illnesses. FIXED: chronic, persistent, prolonged, stable, and recurring illnesses. MUTABLE: volatile, inconsistent, rapid, and unpredictable illnesses.
Each sign & planet rules any illnesses related their respective physical rulerships (i.e. Aries governs brain abnormalities, the Moon governs stomach issues, Libra governs kidney complications, Saturn governs bone diseases, etc). The nature of an illness or injury often aligns with the energy of its astrological signification (i.e. Jupiter can denote mysterious diseases related to overgrowth & excess; Mars can denote intense, painful diseases related to high temperature & over-activity; the Moon can denote issues of fluid retention or over-sensitivity; Saturn can denote grave, burdensome long-term diseases related to contraction, blockages, or decline; Aries can denote fast-paced, acute illnesses; Taurus can denote illnesses related to over-indulgence, habit, or dependency; fire influence can denote inflammation and fevers; and so on).
The houses were not traditionally considered to rule bodily parts or processes, but were instead used to orient the condition of celestial influences on the body in a positive or negative sense, and to represent the circumstances surrounding an individual’s health. The houses also function as points of actualization, where celestial influences can be triggered to manifest. Generally, the first house & Ascendant represent an individual’s overall physique, vitality, stature, and the basic disposition of their health; the sixth, eighth, and twelfth houses are related to illness, disease, injury, and death; and the fifth & eleventh houses are related to remedies, healing, relief, and improvement.
In the birth chart, health is measured in terms of vitality, predisposition, and susceptibility. Transits may determine changes in these terms over time and throughout various dynamic circumstances. In conjunction with modern scientific medicine and the insight of genetics, medical astrology can be used in a nuanced, non-fatalistic way to guide lifestyles, inform treatments, and help predict potential illnesses -- if practiced with immense care & clarity. All significations which point to possible illnesses should be exact, precise to the minute, specific, detailed, and supported multiple times in a chart.

My Sweet Lord (ch2)

Chapter 2 - I’m On Fire
Priest!Joe Mazzello x F!Reader, NSFW, ~3.5k words
My Sweet Lord masterlist
A/N: go listen to holy ghost by modern baseball while u read too cus its rly good,,, anyway this one is a lil dif!!! its a lil bg on the town a lil scene setting n its all about joe now!!!
special thanks given in this post!! you can find whole accompanying laylists there as well not just single associated songs!!!
Warning(s): sex, religious guilt, some scary images, mentions of ejaculate, uuhhh body horror,,,, i think thats it besides maybe kinda disrespecting ur elders lol ???
Father Mazzello had been distracted, to say the least. His newest regular was different, in the simplest terms, and drew his attention in the most tantalizing ways. See, the Oranges was a retiree town in the middle of nowhere, a Bermuda Triangle of the American Midwest. People arrive and they never leave, usually because they die. It was a bit ironic but very fitting to him that the epitome of classic American ideals, though contrasting, collided with ancient human instinct to create this town where the elderly are unequivocally cared for by the young, who remain the bones of the town and keep everything running. You could live and die in the Oranges without ever even leaving them.
The Father had always thought the name was deceiving. “The Oranges” sounded like a small suburb in the wet, hot, muggy parts of Florida, not an old folks zone in middle America. There was some part of him that would always dislike living in a town named “The Oranges”. Maybe it was the priestly side of him, feeling dishonest in their presentation when confronted with their reality, meaning they did not and never have grown oranges there. Maybe it was the sunny signposts standing crookedly beside the worn yellow houses, paint peeling and fences fading, showcasing the poor upkeep of people’s own homes.
He was too harsh, though, because a town, he knew, was not its structures but rather its people, its community. The Oranges had no shortage of smiles, even if they mostly consisted of secondary sets of dentures. That’s what made her smile so different. It was real. Of course, that wasn’t the only reason she stood out, no, it was also her legs, her thighs leading up to her hips, two very real hips, and a waist that would fit so well in his hands and then up a little further where his hands could perfectly cup-
The pencil snapped with a shock and the man blinked at his scribbles, unintelligible now that he’s been broken from his stupor. The lead tip of his pencil rolled in a curved line off his journal then off his desk and he watched it tiredly before glancing at the clock. It was nearly 1 a.m. The clergyman sat back and huffed, taking a moment to assess himself.
His hand had wandered to the crux of his black slacks and he groaned at the hardness beneath the cloth. His groan was unintentional but a needed release as he couldn’t “release” how he really wanted to. His thoughts were clouded with this girl- this girl- He barely knew her name and here he was, fantasizing about her simply because she was the only eligible woman he’d laid his eyes on in nearly a year, or probably more accurately over a year.
‘Why should that even matter to you?’ He asked himself. ‘Why should it matter that she’s eligible? She’s probably not. She probably has a boyfriend, or a girlfriend, even.’ Joe couldn’t help but groan again at the thought of her, pressed against someone else all the ways he wanted her to press against him.
‘Stop it!’ Some voice in the back of his mind hissed. ‘You’re a priest! It doesn’t matter if she’s unavailable! You’re the one who’s unavailable! You took an oath! You made a covenant with the Lord!’ If Joe were a man to curse, this is when he would curse. Instead, he simply moaned in compliance and gave into his conscience, sighing and giving his erection one last squeeze before sliding his hand back up his body, resting it on his open journal. He ripped out the page he’d been working on, the one describing his ‘newest parishioner’ in exquisite detail. No one would ever see that. No one could ever know he experienced such temporal thoughts. He was a priest, after all, he had to set a good example.
He spent the next twenty minutes in a headspace he despised, the one he used to eradicate the want that grew between his legs. It was images of the women in the first row of the church with teeth yellow and denture line visible, their smiles wide and slippery. The men in the back few pews have spots on their balding heads that are sometimes protruding and have hairs only growing there and somehow nowhere else. Joe focused on that, on the lumps and aches they vocalized, on the scratching of their smoke warped voices and the pores like pools on their noses. He thought of the way the hands of the mass shook when they went to place money in the collection basket, the yellow of their nails and the chipped polish on the manicured claws. Their skin was saggy and discolored and their hair is matted and fake and he thinks about what they must look like under their musty Sunday clothes-
He’s soft again, his pants no longer straining and he breathes a sigh of relief, maybe a quiet thanks to God. The priest does his best not to let his mind wander as he lets his feet carry him to his bed where he disrobes, definitely not drifting to imagine how her eager hands would feel pulling his trousers down, nails scraping down his thighs- Joe forced himself to turn the mental image of her tight knuckles to one of chapped and wrinkled ones to keep himself calm. As much as he dislikes subjecting himself to these thoughts, he tells himself he does it for the Lord. The Lord will keep him strong in these times of weakness, he tells himself, in these hours of temptation. He slid into his bed in briefs and an undershirt, letting the softness of his sheets smooth over his skin as it envelopes him and he’s whisked away into a few hours of much-needed rest and revelation.
Your hands had never been softer. It was the only definable thought in Joe’s head when you pushed up his thin shirt. The fabric bunched up over his stomach and you lowered your head to lick a long, wet stripe up from the happy trail disappearing down his shorts.
You were naked, straddling him, hips and thighs curved and soft and outlined by the moonlight that shone in from the cracks in the curtains behind you. The luminescence bounces off the soft tufts of your hair that bunched when your nose hit the bottom of his shirt and you kissed the middle space of his chest reverently. Joe was so wrapped in this moment that he asked no questions. His mind was muddled with lust and want. If you met his needy gaze, you would physically see the fog you caused in his brain, shown in the glazed over eyes that tracked your every move. It was like looking in the windows of a rocking teenager’s car, all steam, and sex behind them.
Your hips ground unconsciously on his crotch where his arousal was obvious and painful and he couldn't keep in his moan. The contact was too much for his near virginal state to handle. Your body, luscious and young and soft, and so easily defiled. It was so sinful. It caused a fire to burn within his loins, reigniting one that had long been a dormant pile of ashes before you came along. Every sway of your breasts as you rose your body slightly from his was another match stricken and thrown to maintain this burn.
Every clench of your thighs around his waist was kindle to feed it. Your undeniable silhouette was gasoline, your ass weighing on his lap was logs and paper, probably journal pages he’s written and hidden of you, but the way you looked down at him, the way your eyes fluttered and your lashes fell, the way your mouth puckered and curled and glistened, that was the first page of the book to burn. One by one, page by page, you would rid him of his religion, strip him of belief until all that existed was you.
And he was fine with that.
Again, Joe felt the contact of your soft pussy pressing over his aching cock and his hand instinctively reached for your hair, tangling his fingers in your locks while his other five went to squeeze at your thigh. Every desperate touch from him was a message; ‘You’re gorgeous,’ ‘please touch me,’ ‘I need you.’ He was practically tracing the letters into your leg as his hand slid down to your knee then back up to your waist. He was still laying down while you were straddling him and grinding against him, occasionally letting your hands wander, pushing up his shirt and licking the skin you could reach without stretching. You had leaned forward to suck at his neck and the holy man about died and ascended to heaven when he felt your tits on his chest and your lips on his neck simultaneously. Your nipples were hard, enough so he felt them drag over his exposed skin when you arched your back and left bruises at his jaw.
Being so focused on your lips, Joe had lost track of your hands. His were on your ass, groping and kneading with silent adoration, but yours had moved from mussing his hair to tugging at his briefs. The man gasped when your hips left his and then, with a swift and sudden motion, his underwear was yanked down and you giggled. Joe, however, did not giggle. The exposure was shocking and the cold was unwelcome, making his cock twitch and sending a shiver up his spine. It was in this moment that Joe finally took in your image, the bite of the cold shaking him from his focus on just how you felt.
All his other senses were hazy and the man of the Lord was overwhelmed. You were glowing. Your hair was feathered and voluptuous. Your skin was velveteen and your body belonged in a temple, deserving of an altar and endless worship. He would have sworn he witnessed a halo form around you as well, a golden line connecting one shoulder to the other in a shining arch. Your smile was soft and distracting, but his gaze persisted down your body full of admiration and curiosity. Your chest was supple and your stomach plush, just like your hips and thighs, all there for him to appreciate.
He sat up to improve his view, allowing himself to be in much closer proximity to you, able now to bask in your scent, sweet and innocent. Then he laid his larger hands on your breasts for the first time. He was almost worried the metal of his rings would surprise you, being cold on your hot skin, but you had no reaction. Kneading with slow gentle movements, he slid his thumb just barely over your nipples, hard and sensitive for him.
Somewhere in the back of his throat, a question was lost, a search for approval that got stuck on its way out, but it didn’t seem to matter as your constant blissful smile was encouraging enough. He didn’t question any of it.
Quiet hums vibrated in your throat and your half-lidded gaze motivated the priest to feel more of your body, squeezing at your waist and ass again and leaning forward to drop unpracticed kisses to the valley of your chest. You laced your fingers in the back of his hair, cradling his skull and holding him to your skin, but when his thumb brushed over your clit, you stopped him. His wrist was caught in your grip in a quick and unexpected move that stopped him from further touching you.
His breath hitched, fearing he’d done something wrong with the way your eyes bore into him, cutting through the silence and bringing him to the reality of what you were doing. Joe felt like he could only inhale, nothing coming out when he tried to push his breath away. He swallowed dryly and your expression softened ever so slightly, dropping his hand to instead wrap your digits around his cock and maneuver it to swipe between your folds. The wetness gathered in your sex and on his tip made for easy entry as you lowered yourself slowly, lashes fluttering and mouth falling open. The man choked on a protest but swallowed it with a moan when his head was sheathed in you, warm and tight and ideal.
Joe couldn't focus on anything. It was all happening so fast for him, a blur of skin and sweat. You bounced on him expertly and he fell limp at your abilities, a sputtering mess as your buoyant tits mesmerized him. Your hot, heavy breaths rained down on him and showered him with increased want, but he was unable to act upon it, struck dumb by a higher force, and that force was the look you gave him, accompanied by a breathy sigh and a smile when you settled fully on his shaft. He hadn’t realized but he had been holding his breath as you rose slid down him again, audibly slick and aroused. At that moment, the world vanished from around him, all fuzz and static, and all he knew was you and the way you felt, sleeved around him perfectly, undulating and flexing with an ever subtle thrust of his, impulsive and quick, needy and natural.
Your speed increased suddenly though, and the priest, barely holding on as it was, couldn’t contain himself. Speaking in tongues of love, he groped at you, searching for an anchor to his physical form as an ethereal feeling washed over him, his orgasm imminent and monumental. It was an out of body experience for the servant of the Lord, greater than any religious bliss he’d yet to experience. He could see himself beneath you, his face contorted as yours glowed with elation and he came inside you. He could feel you pulsing around him and heavenly choirs invaded his ears, the stimulation shrouding him in your presence.
What occurred next was warped and surreal. He was still inside you, coming down but still hard and you were still smiling but the air turned sinister and smelled suddenly not of your scent but of sulfur and lavender. You turned into a shadow over him, no longer a source of light, but rather the opposite; a source of darkness. That’s when your skin began to slip from its place on your skull. Melting like wax, he thought, but his comparison was wrong, so wrong because there were no hot drips hitting his stomach and your hands didn’t begin to pool at his bellybutton. No, instead your soft hands turned to leather and the familiar spots of discoloration and sun exposure began to blossom across your shoulders and chest. He could see your veins, one by one, rise up on your skin on your straining legs. Your breasts sagged and your stomach folded over. Your smile went wider as your lips thinned and eye crinkled, every line on your face growing deeper until he felt the first wisps of your fading white hair fall on his legs. Your nails began to dig into his lower stomach as they grew and then he fell the first few cold objects hit his heated skin. One by one, two by two, teeth, rotted black and yellow, bounced off his chest when you leaned forward.
Joe wanted to scream. He wanted to cry. Maybe he was already, he couldn't tell. By now he assumed his vocal chord had been removed sometime in the night because, still, nothing came out. He tried, he forced all the air in his lungs out his tense lips like a coastal storm blowing in. He was the winds and the waves and the crashing sounds of ocean on rock and sand as he struggled to break free from the growing weight of the body still on top of him, still around him; shaking, twisting, tears streaming down his red face. You were death holding him down, boney legged and saggy skinned, every part of you being pulled with more strength every second towards your home in hell. He didn’t know what to do with his hands so they flailed at his sides as yours slid up his body with the same disturbing gummy, black smile looming over him and all he wanted at that moment was for it all to stop and disappear.
The sweat on his forehead rolled down the sides of his face and collided with the tears that were apparently seeping down his cheeks as well. The tears were hot and the sweat was cold and Joe’s entire face felt numb and damp, and it was. His whole body was. His undershirt was soaked through and his neck shiny and dotted with perspiration. He shot up out of bed, sitting upright with wide eyes as he shook as he frantically assessed his surroundings. The desk was still messy, his journal still out, the lamp was off, the window closed and the door locked. Fear still seeped through his bloodstream and ran from his face to his toes. It was electric emotion that coursed through his body, one that he couldn’t shake and that left his hair standing on end. It was deep beneath is skin, a nestled sense of discomfort. No amount of his unconscious physical shakes could rid himself of it.
He rocked back and forth on his bed for a while, the images of his dream never leaving his head, haunting him like some cliche victorian ghost. His tremors subsided but he wouldn’t be going back to sleep that not, not after that. The drastic shift had gouged a wedge in his heart, one that was now filled with questions and doubts, second thoughts. The fire in his loins burned brighter and hotter and blacker, smoke rising from it in dangerous, polluting amounts.
Upon the onset of further physical discomfort in the form of a cold patch on his briefs, he opted to spend the rest of his night in the shower, not only washing the shameful premature ejaculate from his underwear, but also his dream from his body, the dream he could only assume was a punishment for his earlier sinful thoughts. On one hand, he was washing her touch away, her soft, sweet, innocent touch that couldn’t be wrong, but on the other hand, the abomination that she’d been warped into left a film over him that didn’t seem to wash off.
Joe believed in signs and symbols. He believed that God spoke to you in natural ways, every day. The advertisement on the bus next to you at that red light this morning or the constant re-emergence of one specific suggestion throughout your day, seeing the same person everywhere you went, it was a message from God. “There are no such things as accidents or coincidences,” he preaches, “everything here God has preordained. It is predestined and meant to be.” He thought of her, meeting her and her timing. “Trust that this is the Lord’s will.”
This must be a sign. He thought of all the examples of prophetic dreams in the Bible, all the times the Lord has used this outlet to speak to his servants. Joseph, Jacob, Daniel, Solomon, Nebuchadnezzar- But what did it mean this time? The object of his unsanctioned affection decaying on top of his, immediately post-coitus. It scared him, the implications of it, but it also scared him that he had the dream at all, if he was honest. It was intense. Not only was it erotic, but also scarring. What did it mean for him and his faith? Part of him wanted to brush it aside and ignore any allusions his subconscious was trying to get to him. He wanted to, for once, turn to science to deny the religious answers to his issue, telling himself it was just a projection of some kind of worry, but that would mean he would have to admit to himself he was worried about her, around her, because of her. He would have to acknowledge the effect she had on him and he didn’t want to. He wouldn’t give in to this moment of weakness, so instead he scrubbed his soiled underpants at three in the morning and tried to wash the nightmare from his mind with Shout and bar shampoo, ignoring the heavy dread building in his chest as the hours counted down to Sunday morning, when he would face his congregation of elders and one woman he couldn’t ban from his mind if he wanted to.
He fell asleep at approximately 4:30 in the morning, face flat on the side of his tub, one hand caked in dried soap and the other clinging desperately to his still clearly stained boxer briefs. He didn’t dream this time, and for the first time he was ever aware of it, he was grateful he didn’t.

Physical Description: Sauropelta is a Nodosaurid, a kind of armored dinosaur that featured extensive spikes and other ornaments on their bodies for sexual display. It’s also one of the better known ones, due to its fairly impressive shoulder spikes. While we know the basic structure of this armor due to its bone base, relatives of Sauropelta have helped to indicate that keratin - the same material as hair and nails - probably covered these spikes and made them even longer. This made Sauropelta and animals like it impressive to look at, with increasingly ridiculous spikes and ornaments.

Sauropelta itself was about 5. 2 meters long, making it fairly average size for a Nodosaurid. It was heavily built and squat in size, giving it the general appearance of a tent. It had a triangle shaped head, with a narrow tapering snout. It had a very flat top to its head and a thick skull covered in tightly fused plates, primarily for defense. It had leaf-shaped teeth in both the lower and upper jaws, and a ridge on the inside of its mouth that supported a small beak in the front.
It had a very long tail, half the total length of the body, with bony tendons lining along it to keep it stiff. It had a very wide body, with broad hips and ribs, giving it a very round appearance when looked at head-on. It had short front limbs compared to the hind limbs, arching its back so it was highest over the hips. It had very stout feet and limbs, as well as its shoulders and pelvis, allowing for it to support a great amount of muscle mass and weight.
Sauropelta had rows of small domes - scutes - from the top of the neck to the back of the tail. Over the back and the tail there are small nodules, which separated the larger cone-shaped scutes in parallel rows. On the hips these  nodules and scutes locked together into a shield. Sauropelta had large spines on the sides of the neck, increasing to a peak over the shoulders, and decreasing dramatically before stopping at the hips. Flat plates lined the tail on both sides, pointing out and decreasing in size towards the tail. The spines on the tail and neck were fused, reducing the amount of motion possible for both ends of the body.

Diet: The small, pointed head of Sauropelta means it was a selective browser, eating very specific plant material while foraging rather than indiscriminately eating whatever plants it wanted. It would have been a low-level browser as well, given its short height and limited range of motion in the neck. So, it probably specialized in eating berries; leaves from ferns, conifers, and cycads; and other small bits of vegetation close to the ground or fallen on the ground.
Behavior: Sauropelta is a fairly common animal from its environment and possibly lived in somewhat social groups, either with a few members or many in mixed-species herds, as many other plant eating dinosaurs lived in the same location and may have associated together. It would have been somewhat slow given its squat limb proportions, as opposed to other Nodosaurids such as Hungarosaurus which specialized in quick movements and rapid turns. As such, Sauropelta would have primarily utilized its extensive armor across its back, hips, neck, and head for defense, and may have squatted down against the ground to protect its softer underbelly from attack from predators. This could also have been helped with counter-shading, as found in a close relative Sauropelta. Counter-shading is the use of natural lighting in conjunction with the color of an animal to help disguise it and hide it in the environment, and it is known in Borealopelta, another Nodosaurid; thus, it’s possible that the same would have been found in Sauropelta, or, at least, that Sauropelta would also have been a prey species that needed to hide from predators in its environment. Thus, since Sauropelta didn’t have extensive offensive structures, it probably would have been at least somewhat more skittish than aggressive.

As an Ankylosaur, Sauropelta had a long tongue that it could use to grab food and draw in plant materia, that it would snip off with its narrow beak and jaws. They could breathe while chewing, as well, and probably had a decent sense of smell to aid in seeking out the specific sorts of food it would have preferred.
Sauropelta would probably have taken care of its young, considering that other dinosaurs tend to do so, but there is little evidence present either way for Sauropelta.
Ecosystem: Sauropelta lived in the Cloverly Formation, an Early Cretaceous Western North America ecosystem that showcases the transition from the Late Jurassic to the Late Cretaceous in this region, with many of the features of the more famous Morrison and Hell Creek formations in a weird sort of blender in terms of types of dinosaurs present. This environment lay along the Western Interior Seaway as it began to grow through North America, and extensive rivers ran through the Cloverly Formation to drain into the ocean. These rivers would flood, causing mass burials of animals and leading to the fossils of the formation. The plains were mostly forested, covered in a variety of conifers and cycads. This would lead to flooding causing extensive damage to the forest ecosystem and, as such, leading to mass die-offs of animals.
This muddy environment transitioned to a more sandy environment, still with some mud, as it aged from the Little Sheep Member of the formation to the Himes Member. This reflected the growth of the seaway and the encroachment of beach sand towards the environment of Sauropelta and others. While many creatures died off in the transition, Sauropelta is present in both layers, indicating that it was fine with the new beachfront property.

In the earlier Little Sheep ecosystem, Sauropelta lived alongside dinosaurs such as the medium-level Ornithopod browser Tenontosaurus, the fast-moving low browser Zephyrosaurus, the ambush raptor predator Deinonychus, the Oviraptor omnivore Microvenator, and remains of large sauropods that have not yet been named. There were also non-dinosaurs such as the lungfish Ceratodus, the sharks Polyacrodus and Egertonodus, and many other bony fish, frogs, salamanders, and turtles like Glyptops. There were also mammals such as Gobiconodon, Oklatheridium, Paracimexomys, and Atokatheridium. Crocodilians and lizards were also frequenters of the environment, along with the dinosaurs.
The Himes ecosystem was somewhat different, but in many ways still quite similar to its earlier precursor. Deinonychus, Microvenator, and Tenontosaurus were still around, but there was also the very tall sauropod Sauroposeidon, a poorly known sauropod Rugocaudia, another Nodosaurid Tatankacephalus, and the large predator Acrocanthosaurus, which would definitely have been a thorn in Sauropelta’s side. There may have even been a proto-bird, but that is unconfirmed. There were lizards, frogs, salamanders, crocodilians and more basal crocodile relatives, turtles such as Naomichelys, and an extreme variety of fish and sharks. There were also mammals such as Gobiconodon, Argaliatherium, Corviconodon, Montalestes, Pappotherium, and a wide variety of others.
Sauropelta was an critical fixture of both of these time points, and would have been a defining sight in the Cloverly environment.
Other: Sauropelta may also be known from the Cedar Mountain Formation, a similar environment to the Cloverly, but these remains are largely unconfirmed at this time.

[hair], [eyes], [mouth], [face] and [build] for Celia, Phoebe, Fai and Nessie?? :0 (this is a lot i'm sorry ajdgajdsg)
I’M LAUGHING BECAUSE I HAVE ZERO CHILL!!! But tldr everyone is beautiful.
Celia
Hair.
Celia has extremely dark brown hair, that can be mistaken for black from a far-away distance. Though she puts the proper oils and conditioner in it so that it can appear healthy and shiny her hair is pretty wild. This is because of the shape of her curls, as they seem to have a mind of its own the curls can be very temperamental, unpredictable and prone to frizziness. Her hair just does whatever it wants to for the most part and it brings Celia much annoyance. Celia’s curls are best described as having a definite upper case S shape to it, or in other terms, she has corkscrew curls, if you type Curly 3A that’s the closest we’ll get to seeing her hair irl since it’s pretty wild, stray curls are everywhere and it’s big looking! It’s best to describe her hair as fluffy because despite how wild her hair can be it is very soft and nice to the touch. Her bangs are cut in a blunt and even fringe across her face and it’s the only part of her hair that’s straight but this is due to her using heating rods on her bangs so that they can look neat! They are parted to the left side of her face due to the hair clips that she puts on her right (these are in fact devices made by the lich to help control both her should she ever step out of line and her magic to prevent too much injury, the earring, and bracelet as well but that’s for a whole other post). Sometimes, her bangs tend to curl up. The length of her hair falls down to mid waist length it’s pretty long and it doesn’t really take long for it to grow! Near the ends of her hair, she has a red ribbon tied there giving it a very, very low ponytail. She claims it’s to keep her hair out of her face but really, that ribbon has been apart of her headband she wore as a kid. It serves as a reminder of her origins and what she should be doing.
Eyes.
Celia’s eyes are hollow, but she does a good job acting so most are unable to notice that she’s a dead girl walking among the living. Many would agree that she holds an intelligent glimmer to her brilliant eyes and it’s her main appeal. They’re noticeable large giving her a doe-eyed look, almond shaped and colored a beautiful dark green reminiscent of the foliage surrounding Terra. The upper corners have a lift to them and her lashes are curled but short. She does wear mascara, as it’s the only makeup she likes to wear thus making them appear longer than they already are. Pretty as her eyes may be, there are dark rings surrounding them giving her eyes a more sunken in appearance.
Mouth
Celia has what the world calls “Resting Bitch Face” in spite of her ability to put on many masks to keep up with appearance her face is just naturally bitchy looking and overall she always looks annoyed or dead. I also like to call her face “Resting Corpse Face” due to how dead/ expressionless she looks sometimes, especially whenever she detaches herself from certain situations. That said her mouth is always set in a frown and while she’s always giving polite smiles (or a nasty vicious smirk), an actual smile from Celia is so freaking rare but pretty nonetheless as she does have a nice set of dimples. Her…. uh… teeth I guess are natural sized fitting her features, clean and white. Although her canines are particularly sharp and make her more vicious expressions seem all the more frightening. Her lips are plump and wide with the bottom lip being slightly bigger than the top and her top lip is shaped like cupid’s bow. Um… one more thing I’d like to mention is that whenever she’s nervous, her jaw tends to set, she bites her lower lip or she purses them.
Face.
Celia has delicate and youthful features fitting of someone who’s in their early twenties. She has a heart-shaped face, her chin is a bit small but pointed and fits her face shape and her jawline is defined but not at all strong. She has a small and rounded nose that comes at a very slight upturn, a bit of a side note but both her nose and forehead are prone to outbreaks of stress pimples much to her dismay. Her cheekbones aren’t very high or pronounced either and her ears a bit of the big side and they point slightly outward!
Build.
It’s best to describe Celia as lithe. She’s freaking tiny, standing at nearly 5'3 her shoulders aren’t at all broad, they’re petite and narrow shaped. Overall she would have a wiry and almost tube-like body if not for her prominent hips and the added curves they give her. Celia has an almost pear ship body due to her well-defined but slim waist, full hips and butt. Her thighs are a bit on the muscular side once she starts moving around due to having to work around outside. Her torso is a bit on the short side but her legs are long.
Phoebe
Hair.
FUCKING FLAWLESS AND THE SORT OF HAIR THAT EVERY GIRL DREAMS OF. Colored a lovely shade of strawberry blonde, Phoebe’s hair is pin straight and rarely does her hair frizz up and on top of that, she has zero flyways. It’s annoying perfect and there are times where you wish you could chop it off because oh my god how can anyone have such perfect hair!! It’s thick, extra bouncy and just very nice and healthy looking with the right amount of shine to it. She has an overabundance of it and Phoebe’s hair is long as fuck, almost being half her height it’s like… 5'8 inches of hair, it stops neatly around her calves and the ends are not at all broomstick like. Her bangs are cut in a similar fashion like Celia’s where it’s a blunt fringe cut all nice and even, with two strands of it neatly framing her face. She usually likes to wear it loose but there are a couple of braids in there, these braids are mostly from children who love to play with her hair and Phoebe doesn’t have the heart to untie them until it’s time for bed.
Eyes.
She’s not human, so it’d only make sense that her eyes show this aspect of her since eyes are the window to the soul and all that. Her eyes are best described as being a piercing amber colored, almost dipping into a more molten orange-gold color. They’re quite striking and it’s always easy to tell what the princess is feeling as she has a sort of “open book” to her eyes. As for eye shape, they are wide-set and have a noticeable upturned lift at the corners of them. Her eyelashes her long and curled naturally.
Mouth.
Her lips are full and fit her jawline quite nicely, she often wears a nice pink almost coral colored lipstick on them to make her lips look more pleasing and also to match with her light makeup. She doesn’t have dimples or resting bitch face like Celia but when she smiles, the world stops because it’s fucking beautiful. Thankfully for everyone surrounding her, she’s always wearing a small smile on her lips. She only frowns whenever she’s thinking.
Face.
Her face is a bit broader than Celia’s and she has a heart-shaped face yet her chin is long and ends in a more rounded manner rather than pointed. Her features and bone structure are far more noticeable. She has a well-defined jawline too. Many would consider her to have an almost doll-like face. Her face is blemish free and… does this bitch even have any pores? Because god damn her facial skin is perfect since it’s not oily or dry at all.
Build.
She has a gracile and willowy body that exudes elegance befitting the princess. She’s huge, standing at the tall, tall height of 5'11 and has full shaped body as she is all curves. And while her shoulders are broad but she maintains an hourglass shape. She has some muscles all in her arms, back, and legs due to intense training she did to become the best Sibyl like no one ever was. She’s lithe, yes, but Phoebe is not at all delicate like Celia is.
Faine
Hair.
Faine’s hair is the reason why Celia is always salty, as it’s very soft and tamable. He has dark locks of hair that have a wave to them near the ends of it. He has messy bangs that fall over his eyebrows and a few dark strands framing his face. His hair is thin but he has an overabundance of it as well. He always wears it up in a ponytail for the sake of his job but it reaches around the nape of his neck, maybe even longer than that!
Eyes.
His eyes are large and quite expressive as well in spite of his poker face. They are colored a beautiful yet inhumane color of blue and often times people are freaked out yet drawn in by his eyes. Near the pupil, there is a yellow-green ring and he has cat-like pupils.  His eyes are double lidded and framed by long lashes that curl. Near his right eye, there is a beauty mark…
Mouth.
KISSABLE I MEAN WHA- ahem, they are often set in a line of carefully hidden emotions. As I’ve said before he’s quite good at keeping a poker face so he prefers to wear a frown to make himself appear tougher than he looks. He too has resting bitch face in other words however he’s not as dead looking as Celia. His lips are pink, a bit on the thin but wide and the bottom lip juts out.
Face.
Many would agree that Faine is “a pretty boy” he doesn’t have the sharp, rugged manly features that fit the beauty standards of the west but my god is he so damn beautiful (Actually many would find that he’s pretty than Celia during their travels). He has a clean appearance, meaning little to no facial hair or five o clock shadow. His nose is long, small and ends in a point. His face is heart-shaped, he has high cheekbones and a prominent jawline.
Build.
He’s an ectomorph, Faine has what you would call “soft features” yes he’s toned and lean but he’s a bit on the thin side and can appear as delicate as the result of this. He’s not so broad shouldered or muscular and his waist is pretty small (much to Celia’s dismay and envy). But don’t let his appearance fool you, he does have superhuman strength and can in fact suplex a dragon that is more than his size. He’s short and he’s only a couple of inches taller than Celia. I’d like to say that he’s maybe around 5'4" or 5'5" roughly between those two heights.
Nessie
Hair.
Nessie’s hair is rough! But it’s still very pretty and she wears it in loose waves. She has this haircut where the front is long, ending at her armpits with the back being short. There are no bangs and she shows off her forehead. She has black hair and at times her hair can be a lil messy due to all of the running around she does so it’s not always neat looking.
Eyes.
She has more round eyes and they are downturned at the corners. Her eyes are inhumanly blue much like Faine and she has a circle of yellow-green near her pupil that appear almost cat-like. It’s always so easy to tell what Nessie is thinking because of just how passionate she is! She has no problem with letting people know what’s thinking about or how she’s feeling.
Mouth.
Pretty full and a bit too wide for her jawline but still nice all the same. Much like Phoebe, Nessie always loves to wear a smile on her lips so she always has such a nice and warm expression on her face. She loves to wear clear gloss on her lips just to make them look nice!
Face.
Nessie has the “girl next door” look to her, meaning that she’s pretty plain or cute depending on who’s asking. Her face is round shaped with her chin ending a bit more pointed. She has a pretty wide and prominent forehead and her cheekbones really aren’t too noticeable. Her nose is has a broad tip to it and it’s a little droopy, on top of that there is a slight crook to her nose due to her breaking it once in a fight. She has pleasing, normal features overall.
Build.
Muscular and full body, Nessie has an almost inverted triangle like shape to her body where she doesn’t have many curves going for her. Her torso is long as well are her legs and… well her body is just overall very long with muscle definition. She stands around 5'9 so she’s the tallest out of Faine and Celia… something she likes to brag about almost constantly.

Friday Q&A: Jaw Pain
Friday Q&A: Jaw Pain Nina Zolotow
Q: I have a student with jaw pain. She is a new student and just mentioned it to me at the end of class yesterday. I searched YFHA, but didn’t find anything specific to the jaw, but I may have searched inefficiently.
I will ask if she has a diagnosis, but do you have any suggested yoga practices specifically for the jaw? I teach neck and shoulder stretches, but have not done much work specifically for the jaw. I sometimes lead my students in Lion’s Pose and we will do self-massage for the face, but any other suggestions? Thank you for any help you can provide!
A: When I got this email, I immediately thought of fellow Bay Area yoga teacher and specialist in all things jaw-related, Cantor Shachoy. She was kind enough to address this question and a few others I had for her. Here’s a condensed version of our interview. —Baxter
Baxter: Cator, thanks for agreeing to share some of your experience and wisdom on the subject of jaw pain with us! Obviously, we don’t really know what diagnosis or the source of this particular person’s jaw pain is. But can you tell us what the two or three most common reasons are for jaw pain in those you have worked with and a little bit about each condition? Cator: Let me start by mentioning my perspective on this topic. In addition to being a long-time yoga and mindfulness instructor, I am also a Craniosacral practitioner. Craniosacral bodywork has a unique understanding of the jaw, which is that it is intimately intertwined with the rest of the body. Much of what I have to offer with regards to yoga and working with the jaw comes from my training in Craniosacral Therapy (CST), and applying these principles to yoga practice. The three most common causes of jaw pain that I work with are: 1.TMJ/TMD: Pain of the temporomandibular joints, located just below the ear on either side of the face. This may be caused by clenching, grinding, structural imbalance (e.g. scoliosis), car accidents or other whiplash (bicycling accidents, sports, etc.), slips and falls, braces, dental work, or other accidents. Hormones, emotions, and trauma can also be factors. 2. Sinus Pain: The upper jawbones, the maxilla, are hollow bones. They have a cavity or sinus in them. When the sinuses do not drain properly they can become heavy, dull, painful, and prone to infection. Sinuses may become blocked due to clenching, inflammation, environmental sensitivities, headaches, muscle tension or spasm, structural imbalance, or injuries as listed above with TMJ. 3. Compressed Teeth: This may be caused by clenching or grinding, a fall or blow to the head, or other causes, and may result in infection or need for a cap, crown, or tooth removal, replacement, or root canal if unaddressed. Baxter: Are there some common approaches to these most common causes of jaw pain, in regards to the use of yoga tools or other mindfulness practices? And, if so, can you share a few with us? And is our curious yoga teacher safe to do those things she mentioned above? Cator: Here are some basics for working with the jaw (we all need a lot of reminding so these can be repeated many, many times): 1. The upper and lower teeth should never touch unless you are actively chewing food. Through bringing conscious awareness to the habit of clenching during the day, we can learn to release the lower jaw so that teeth are no longer touching. This takes frequent reminding for awhile, and it can be said many times in the same yoga class, or practiced throughout the day by taking a few minutes three to five or more times a day (morning, noon, night and a couple other times) to notice what's going on inside your mouth. Invite the lower jaw to release away from the upper jaw, creating space between upper and lower teeth. 2. Practice modified Lion Face pose. Lion Face pose is most often practiced by taking the facial structure to extremes—mouth and eyes open as wide as possible with tongue fully extended, and head and neck often thrust forward. If someone's jaw is tight and painful, they may not be able to open wide, and it could cause some damage if they are not careful. Likewise neck tension may be affecting their jaw (see section on cross connections below). Instead, practice opening and closing the mouth slowly, in a range that feels comfortable. Use the action of opening and closing as a means for investigating what feels good, what does not, and what happens. Is there any clicking, popping, crackling in the jaw joint? Slow down a little. Don't force. If you pay close attention you can even notice when the jaw action influences the neck. You may notice slight twinges and right-left pulls. This gives more info about the neck-jaw connection. Small movements and relaxed muscles will reveal more than extreme movements and tension. 3. Practice breath awareness. When we are clenching, it's very difficult to breathe into the lower belly. Conversely, if we are breathing freely in the whole of the torso, we will be less likely to clench. Begin to notice your breathing habits. Three to five times a day, stop, and just notice where you are breathing—belly, ribs, or collarbones? Three-part breathing is a simple yoga practice to reset breathing patterns. We will breathe into these three different areas for three breaths each: lower belly (between navel and pubis), lower ribs/upper abdomen (breathing diaphragm), and upper ribs/collar bones. Place the hands below the navel. Beginning with the out breath, breathe all the way out. When out turns to in, send the breath here, allowing the belly to stretch and fill more than normal. If your belly is tight, it's okay to apply a little effort to really expand the belly. Practice this for three breaths, and then return to normal breathing. Next, move to base of ribs, with palms on firm ribs and fingers on soft (upper) belly. Invite the ribs to expand forward and to the sides. After three breaths, return to normal breathing. Finally, place hands on upper ribs, with index fingers close to the collarbones, thumbs close to armpits, and other fingers spread across upper chest. Invite the collarbones to lift and upper ribs to expand. Exhaling, release the air without collapsing the chest. At each location, focus on only breathing in that area. For example, when at lower belly, don't worry about breathing into chest and ribs. At your collarbones don't breathe into lower ribs and belly. Keep the jaw relaxed and teeth apart. Breathe through either the nose or mouth, whichever is easier. 4. Work the cross connections. There are a lot of cross connections between the jaw and other areas of the body, which means you can influence the jaw by improving posture, alignment, strength and flexibility in other areas of the body. Important cross connections include the upper neck, the shoulders, and the pelvis. Jaw-Neck: The fulcrum for movement of the jaw, i.e., opening and closing the mouth, is between C1 and C2 (joints in the cervical spine). This is known as Guzay's Theorem. This means that the neck and jaw are directly influencing one another every time we open and close the mouth. This is a very important fact for yoga teachers to know. If a student has jaw tension, they will have upper neck tension. If they have upper neck tension, they will have jaw tension. These two can't really be separated. On the plus side, if we work to release the upper neck (for example, through passive traction in Downward-Facing Dog pose), this can have a positive impact on the jaw, if we remember to relax the jaw. It will be less effective if we are unconsciously clenching. A simple reminder to open the mouth slightly and relax the jaw can help a lot. Shoulders-Jaw: Stabilize the shoulder girdle and invite passive traction (or gentle extension if upright) of neck and head. Keep teeth apart and jaw relaxed. You could also do this in Downward-Facing Dog, for instance. Pelvis-Jaw: Opening the hips with awareness of the jaw can provide a lot of benefits when working with jaw tension. Practice a modified Lion Face pose (i.e., explore gently opening and closing the mouth to invite release of neck & jaw) while in standing poses and hip openers to remind yourself of the pelvis-jaw connection. And as to whether our questioner is safe to do these things, I believe so. The Buddha coined a term "ehipassiko," which translates to, "Come and see for yourself" or “Don't just take my word for it, check it out!” I encourage teachers to try out the suggestions I am offering. See whether they work on your own body. Get to know your own patterns, and see what is helpful and what isn't. Then share your best practices with your students. What I am offering comes out of my experience. I have tried to focus on simple, accessible tools—there's a lot more we can do with yoga asana once we get the fundamentals of jaw awareness going. I hope this is helpful. I am curious as to whether these tools work for you. I'd love to hear from you. I keep learning about what works and what doesn't. Send an email to [email protected] to let me know your best practices—what worked, and what didn't.  Baxter: I don’t know if you have had the same experience as I have, but many of my students with these sorts of symptoms will often have them for quite a while and have not yet seen a doctor to get it medically evaluated. What sort of encouragement do you give to those folks? Cator: Jaw pain/tension can be treated through a variety of modalities. Working together with your doctor and/ or dentist, Craniosacral bodywork is an excellent gentle non-invasive modality for treating many sources of jaw pain. Once we have a clearer sense of what is going on, you can learn self-help techniques, including yoga, mindfulness, conscious relaxation and self-facial massage, which can all support your recovery. Baxter: I know you offer workshops on jaw issues-do you have any upcoming events that interested folks, at least in the Bay Area, could take advantage of? Cator: Yes! My Relieve Jaw Tension through Yoga & Mindfulness Workshop is coming up at a couple locations around the bay this spring: 1. Sunday, April 23, 1:30-4:30p @ California Yoga Center in Mountain View, CA 2. Sunday, June 4, 2-5pm @ The Mindful Body in San Francisco, CA Baxter: Cator, thanks for sharing this information and ideas around jaw pain with us!
