Hamamelis vernalis (Ozark witch-hazel)

The 'witch' in witch-hazel has nothing to do with black cats and broomsticks. It's actually derived from the Olde English word wice, meaning "pliant" or "bendable", a reference to its twigs and branches. At this time of year, it's pleasure to see anything in bloom but this magnificent specimen is really putting on a show.

There are five species of witch-hazel, one from China, one from Japan and three from North America. This particular species, Hamamelis vernalis, is native to the Ozark Mountains (Missouri, Oklahoma and Arkansas). It's quite tall for a witch-hazel, maybe 15 feet, and it blooms in late winter, just before it 'leafs-out'. It has strongly scented flowers and hybrids are available in pink, bronze and red but I think I like it in the original yellow the best.

Also I like to imagine she saw the fuzzbutts that was Fireheart’s clanmates and specifically picked Onion because of his fluffiness.

The thing with the kittypets is that they're very Not Warriors. It's hard to think of anything beyond prefixes for them. Witch-Hazel is obvious - just give her Hazel- - and Smudge could be Swallow- (insert joke about how much he eats [THIS IS THE NAME OF A BIRD]) with Onion being...well, Onion-. They'd probably all get -pelt or -fur or -stripe or -patch or whatever. They're kittypets for sure.

Early in the spring the Loropetalum chinense var. rubrum 'Fire Dance' (Chinese witch hazel) is flowering. The deep pink flowers are a distinctive colour as many spring shrubs have yellow, white or pale pink blooms. This is a small shrub which can reach 1m in height and width.
