I can hear the SPLASH sfx as the group enters the Coral Sea! The bubbles look so fun too, definitely reminds me of the bubbles that would show up in The Little Mermaid when the merpeople and sea creatures moved around vigorously. I love how the drawings show us how different the physics are under the water and how the characters move and react differently as a result of that. They're paddling their arms to fight against the water pressure, trying to see how their limbs react to their new aquatic environment. You can tell from their expressions too: they're totally out of their element now.

another hazbin hotel rewrite/redesign?

yup! and i'm so serious about it that i made a whole blog for it. i'm a white queer ex-cath tran doing this as an art and writing exercise, so feedback from other creatives + jewish and/or racialized folks is especially welcome.

i'm putting this post and only this post in the main tags for visibility. also, not gonna link my main, but i do make my own original stuff, and i encourage fans and haters alike to do the same.

anyway, here's a mostly good-faith 1.7k-word essay on the original. i think it's pretty funny and brings up some less talked-about points. correct me on the facts, disagree with my opinions, and ask clarifying questions, but don't come at me with any piss-poor reading comprehension.

the hellaverse is garbage, and here's why

cw: strong language, stronger opinions, intersectional feminist critical discourse analysis

1. vivienne medrano, the person

medrano was born as a well-off white-passing latina (salvadoran-american) in bougieass frederick, maryland. while attending new york's top art school, she got popular on deviantart-tumblr-twitter by being a prolific multifandom fujoshi furry who's more into ornamental character design than storytelling. upon graduation, she leveraged her fanbase and industry connections to make the hazbin and helluva boss pilots, get helluva made for youtube, and get hazbin made for amazon prime.

like every woman online, she gets harassed for no good reason, and as a certified autist, i will defend her right to be dumb, weird, annoying, and bad with words. however, there are legit reasons to criticize her:

racism, misogyny, homophobia, fatphobia, some antisemitism, past transphobia, past ableism

shitty boss, bad friend

cowardly, vindictive, manipulative, thoughtless behavior

skeevy friends

sucks at taking criticism

in short, i think she desperately needs a PR person and someone to clean up her digital footprint.

2. medrano's art

incurious

inauthentic

noncommittal

creatively stagnant

overindulgent, and the indulgence isn't even fun

shallow and childish framed as complex and mature

bland and boring framed as shocking and subversive

to be clear, i'm at peace with the existence of suckass art like this; i just think the money, attention, and praise it gets are unearned and should go to more interesting works, of which there are infinite.

medrano's had the time, money, and social cache to grow as an artist, learn from the best, and take creative risks, but she hasn't. if she truly has nothing more to offer, she should let her collaborators take the wheel, but she doesn't do that either. instead, she keeps getting more and more resources to make the same baby bullshit, and that pisses me off. she could be the nicest person ever, and this fundamental arrogance would still make her art blow.

stop with the pointless guilt: liking medrano's work does not make you stupid or evil. however, if you stay in the kiddie pool of culture, if you refuse to engage with a diversity of art, if the hellaverse is your point of reference for anything media-related, you can't expect to have your opinions on art, media, or culture taken seriously. you have not earned a seat at the table. you gotta hit the books first.

i cannot emphasize enough how much incredible stuff is out there if you're willing to look further than what social media and streaming services put right in front of you. if you come away from this blog having learned about just one new artist or piece of art, i'll be a happy camper.

3. the hellaverse

a. empty and confused

hazbin and helluva's content and marketing has no clear target audience. the subjects are inappropiate for teens, but the execution is too childish for adults, and lemme tell you what i don't mean by that, first.

not inherently inappropriate for teens:

sex and sexuality

violence, including when it intersects with the above

politics and religion

not inherently childish:

animation (any style)

comedy

episodic writing and/or loose continuity

young characters

fun, happiness, optimism, the power of friendship, cuteness, tenderness, sincerity, etc.

what i mean is that these shows are literally about adult characters who fuck, smoke, drink, do drugs, go clubbing, work full-time, manage their own finances, and deal with stuff like bureaucracy, sexual violence, domestic abuse, marriage, divorce, late adoption, and family estrangement.

however, none of these "adult" things are given enough specificity to create drama or comedy. it's all too stock, vague, flat, weirdly sanitized, and thus utterly banal—pure aesthetics on top of bad saturday morning cartoons. it's exactly what i'd expect from a sheltered disney kid who needs to log off and get into their local gay scene ASAP so their only contact with things like poverty, policing, addiction, and sex work stops being facile movies and TV.

if the shows were aware of this and played with it, that could be amazing, but they're not. they give you the mickey mouse version of the world with a straight face and then play looney tunes sound effects to try to make you laugh and sad_violin.mp3 to try to make you cry. now that's funny.

b. old and tired

let's make like americans and pretend that the rest of the world doesn't exist. even within the confines of the USA, home of the hays code, the red scare, and reaganite propaganda, this neopuritan fascist state ruled by 1000 megachurches in a trenchcoat, the indie/underground animation scene has been doing crazier shit for decades. anti-war films in the 60's, bakshi movies in the 70's, the simpsons shorts and r-rated movies in the 80's, adult swim and MTV in the 90's, flash/newgrounds/youtube in the 00's, streaming in the 2010's—so what are we doing in the 2020's with this wet white rice drowned in expired ketchup? i feel crazy making this point because it's obvious if you've watched these things, but if you haven't, you're gonna be like "well, there's gotta be something new here". no! there isn't! in the words of jimmy "the scot" jordan, nothing, nothing, NOTHING!

c. ideological purgatory

actually, there is one thing in these shows i've never seen before: the presbysterianism. shout out some interesting or at least intentional presbysterian art in the comments, because the way these ideas are presented here is not compelling. it just makes the rainbow neoliberalism even more confusing and contradictory.

i guess the big presbysterian things are protestanism, calvinism, and, uh, big church government? presbysterians, get your shit together. get your brand down. catholics have BDSM and vampires, evangelicals have TV and corporatism; what do you have? celtic crosses? no wonder medrano has such uninspired ideas on divinity.

d. queer deficiency

when i look at a piece of art, i ask myself: "what does this give me that i can't get from the hunchback of notre dame (1996)?" if the answer is as limp as "uhh, gay people, i guess", i can probably look for my gay shit elsewhere and rewatch the hunchback of notre dame (1996) in the meantime.

but let's say that you have no standards. you've been waiting for ages for a show about gays by the gays for the gays, and by god you're gonna get it. this is it! here we go! time for some

and the stalest sex jokes known to man

...yeah, it's not very queer. and by "queer", i mean "questioning or subverting gender norms (including sexual roles) within a given cultural context regardless of creator identity and intent". i'm not a queer studies scholar so LMK if there's a more specific term for this, but whatever you call it, it's not in the hellaverse much.

there's not even any transness, literal or metaphorical, just ancient drag jokes. i guess the writers thought we would've been too controversial. so much for an indie animation studio that prides itself in the diversity of its staff both above and below the line, bakshi-style. i wonder how medrano, a bisexual woman, would've felt if told that a lesbian main couple in hazbin would be "too controversial".

4. spindlehorse and the vivziepop brand

spindlehorse toons underpays its overworked staff and keeps outsourcing more and more labor to even more overworked freelancers overseas to cut costs. a rainbow sweatshop is still a sweatshop, and just because these practices may be "industry standard" doesn't make them any more ethical.

the studio has also been repeatedly accused by current and former employees and contractors of creating a hostile and abusive workplace. AFAIK, it still has no dedicated HR person, and victims are too afraid of retaliation like blacklisting and online harassment to speak out.

this is exactly the stuff that unions exist to prevent. as i'm writing this, the IATSE (the parent union of TAG, which is the parent union of all US animation unions) is negotiating with entertainment industry executives for better working conditions, and if the execs fuck around like last year, it's strike time again. so watch this space, voice your support, and don't cross any picket lines.

i hope spindlehorse unionizes, but until then and for these reasons, i don't think you should give money to the company.

first of all, all content on amazon-owned platforms is ok to pirate, and all youtube ads are ok to block. everyone involved in making the episodes has (or should have) been paid upfront, so you're not taking the bread out of anyone's mouth.

next, let's look at the succulent offerings of the official vivziepop merch shop:

$10 pins and keychains

$15 sticker packs

$20 mugs and acrylic cutouts

$25 shirts

$30 metal cards (not even tarot)

$40 lounge pants

$50 mini backpacks

random $80 skateboard deck

forgive my latin americanness, but this is all stuff you can get made by a local metalsmith, print/sublimation shop, or just crafty people in your life. it's cheaper, customizable, and better for the environment to skip all the shipping and packaging. also, not painting your own skateboard is poser shit.

the hazbin website also has $15 pins, one $20 keychain, and $6 trading card packs. people are weird about trading cards, so if for some reason you wanna gamble for a mass-produced bit of cardboard, plastic, and tinfoil, at least bulk-order for all the vivziepoppers in your area so it's less of a huge waste. better yet, trace the designs and make infinite bootlegs.

at the end of the day, buying merch is not activism. your bulk order of trading cards will not save any wage slaves from getting evicted from their overpriced studio apartments. however, the shop links you to all the credited artists/designers, and more of your bucks will actually reach them if you buy their designs directly, then turn them into body pillows or life-sized bronze statues or whatever the fuck.

go through the credits of any episode of helluva or hazbin, and you'll find even more creatives you might wanna support. get jinkx monsoon's albums on CD. subscribe to actually good artist, animator, and composer gooseworx. lots of voice actors now have patreon, cameo, or self-hosted pages where you can write better lines for their characters and have them read it. these things may not look as shiny as Official Merch™, but we all need less plastic shit and more culture anyway.

Young Americans are more pro-Palestinian than their elders. Why?

This is a thought provoking article about how different U.S. generations perceive the current conflict between Israel and Hamas. To encourage people to read the entire article, this is a gift 🎁link so that anyone can read the article, even if they do not subscribe to The Washington Post.

Although I am from an older U.S. generation, I condemn the Netanyahu administration's decision to pursue Hamas at the unconscionable expense of tens of thousands Palestinian civilians, including many children.

However, reading this article helped me to also understand why, being born in the decade after the Holocaust, I don't absolve Hamas of their terrifying behavior on Oct. 7th--unlike many younger people seem to have done. Although I strongly oppose the apartheid Israel has imposed on the Palestinians (and I do believe that Palestine should have been a free separate state long ago), I still don't think there is any justification for such a terrorist act against Israeli civilians.

I encourage you to read the entire article, but here are a few excerpts:

Across more than two months of war between Israel and Hamas, public opinion on the conflict has continuously shifted. But there has been a constant: a divide between the views of older and younger Americans that has shown up both during the war and in the years leading up to it. [...] Each age group has a different “generational memory” of Israel, Dov Waxman,director of the UCLA Younes and Soraya Nazarian Center for Israel Studies, said. Beliefs about the world tend to form in our late teens and early 20s and often don’t change, he said. Older generations, with a more visceral sense of the Holocaust, tend to see Israel as a vital refuge for the Jews, he said, and see its story as one of a people returning to safety in their homeland after living for 2,000 years as a scattered diaspora facing persistent persecution. In the decades after its founding, Israel was a relatively lower-income and vulnerable country. [...] But by the time millennials began forming their understanding of global events, the violence of the second Intifada had concluded in the mid-2000s with enhanced walls and barriers constructed between Israel and the West Bank, and then Gaza. This generation formed its idea of Israel from reports of Palestinians denied access to water, freedom of movement and fair trials, under the military control of what was by then a relatively rich, nuclear-armed power. “When I was in college it was the Oslo peace process, and I still remember that Israel — pursuing peace with the Palestinians and the hopes that came along with that,” Waxman said, of the ’90s. “Younger Americans have no memory of that.”

A racial justice lens Joey Ayoub, a Palestinian-Lebanese writer, podcaster and academic, says young Americans are more likely to conceptualize the Palestinian cause as a sister issue to U.S. efforts for racial justice. There is a “visual parallel,” he said: of an armed soldier or police officer dominating a space inhabited by a populace with limited power, whether in a town in the occupied West Bank or a majority-Black neighborhood in the United States. [...] Eitan Hersh, a political science professor at Tufts University, said conflict between Israel and Palestinians seems to be seen by the young left, especially on college campuses, as “a people of color — that is, the Palestinians — rising up against a white oppressor,” though a significant portion of Israel’s Jewish population is of a non-European background. (Some are the descendants of about 850,000 Jews who were expelled from Arab countries and Iran after Israel was founded.) “It’s a bit of a curiosity,” he said. “One could tell an oppressor-oppressed story where the Jews, and Israel, is a story of the oppressed: kicked out of all these countries, going back to their homeland, surrounded by a broad set of dominant countries in the region that wants to destroy it.” Shifting demographics One explanation for the generational divide, experts said, was that fewer Gen Zers and millennials identify as conservative or Christian — demographics more likely to sympathize with Israel — than older groups. [...] Another “major factor” in older generations’ feelings toward Israel is their greater religiosity, according to Waxman. More than three-quarters of Americans 60-64 are Christian — with increasingly higher numbers for older brackets — compared with about half of adults under 30. “It’s, I think, for many religious Christians, somehow a kind of atonement in supporting Israel and Zionism,” Waxman added. “Genuinely, a feeling of Israel as a consequence of this long history of Jewish persecution” by Christians. Some Christians, particularly among evangelicals who are especially likely to sympathize with Israel, believe that Israel was promised to the Jews by God, and that the return of the Jews to Israel fulfills a biblical prophecy of the events that will precede the second coming of Jesus Christ. But even outside of this belief, the idea of Israel as a sacred land for Judeo-Christians has an emotional resonance that is simply not present for the increasing number of secular young Americans. [...] Social vs traditional media Dana El Kurd, a nonresident fellow at the Middle East Institute, said different types of media consumption have probably played a role in how people have formed their views on the Middle East. Americans 45 and older are most likely to get their news from TV networks and their websites, and Americans younger than 45 are most likely to get their news through social media, according to 2022 YouGov polling. The regular use of TikTok in particular is correlated with criticism of Israel, a New York Times/Siena poll found this week. Ayoub, whose interview podcast “The Fire These Times” with Lebanese, Palestinian, Syrian, Jewish, and Armenian perspectives has mostly Gen Z and millennial listeners, said that new forms of media facilitated access between content creators and consumers without “having a gatekeeper.” This has downsides, including “a huge uptick in misinformation” online, he said, but also positives, including allowing traditionally underrepresented groups to reach an audience. [...] “I’ll give an anecdote,” El Kurd said. “My students, when the war broke out, said that they had gone onto TikTok and toggled between the different locations,” to see what kind of videos were popular in Israel compared with Gaza, the West Bank and other places. “It had never occurred to me before to do that.”

I am strongly opposed to the apartheid that Israel imposed on the Palestinian population. But being from an older generation, I am also less likely to wholly embrace some of the (in my opinion) more simplistic generalizations that younger generations claim regarding Israel.

For instance, many younger people assume most Israelis are predominantly of white European ancestry, but there is evidence that about half the Israeli population is not of white European descent, including those who always lived in the region, those from Ethiopia and Northern Africa, and the descendants of the 20th century expulsion of 850,000 Jews from other nations in the Middle East.

There are also some estimates that only 20% of the general gene pool in Israel is white European. This in turn leads to questions about the assumption of many younger people that white European Jews engaged in a "settler colonialism" of Israel. Still, some form of colonization DID happen, even if it might not fit a strict definition of "settler colonialism."

But it is important to remember that most of the Jewish colonizers around the time of Israel's founding were refugees who had survived the Holocaust, or were running from Eastern European pogroms/oppression, or who were expelled from Iran and Arab nations. What is tragic is that many of these Jewish victims of persecution and oppression and/or their descendants ended up implementing or supporting oppressive practices towards the Palestinians in their attempts to create a Jewish state where they could finally feel safe.

In many ways, all the nations of the world who oppressed and persecuted Jews for centuries have some responsibility for this mess. But that does not absolve the Israeli leaders from their oppressive choices towards Palestinians (especially their current choices that have resulted in the deaths of tens of thousands of Palestinian civilians)--just as Israeli oppressive behavior does not absolve Hamas leaders for their decisions to employ terrorist tactics against Israeli civilians on Oct. 7th.

Although I still support a two-state solution, I believe there are no easy fixes to this situation. The conflict, for both Israelis and Palestinians is an emotional powder keg fueled by thousands of years of transgenerational trauma (both within the region, and outside it in the case of the Jewish diaspora). This in turn affects the perceptions and responses of both Israelis and Palestinians. Sadly the current conflict has only added a new layer to the transgenerational trauma of both groups.

Anyway, after reading the above article, I realize that coming from an older generation, my perspective on the Israeli-Hamas conflict is different than the perspectives of some younger people. However, I still think there should be an immediate cease fire, and that the Biden administration should STOP supporting Israel, unless Israelis agree to end the fighting, fully support a rapid international humanitarian aid effort for the Palestinians in Gaza, come to the table to negotiate peace, and finally allow the creation of a free Palestinian state.

I shrugged my shoulders. "I just know....But you look good", I hummed looking over at him before looking back at my camera.

"Thank you. You look wonderful", he said making me smile hard as fuck, I had to cover my face.

"Thank you", I hummed.

"You nervous or something?"

"A lil bit...Can we go eat?", I said before I put my hair over my shoulder.

"Yeah. What you want?", he answered with a light chuckle.

"I don't know. What's around here?"

"You should be telling me, you live here", he chuckled.

He shook his head and pulled out his phone.

"Fast food? A restaurant? Hibachi?", he asked as he opened his map app.

He looked up from his phone and over at me.

"What?", I laughed.

"Then where else you getting hot wings from?"

He playfully rolled his eyes before looking back at his phone.

"Let's see which one's closer."

"Y'all", I sighed as I looked at my camera. "I hope he don't try to kidnap me while I'm in his car."

"Chill", he chuckled as he kept looking at his map.

I chuckled before looking back over at him. I quietly admired him before he leaned over to show me something on his phone.

"Damn you iced out huh", I said and grasped his hand, looking at the rings on his fingers. "You gotta be froze in this ho to talk."

He laughed. "Really Kenn."

I laughed with him.

"Nah I'm just playing", I hummed as I grabbed his phone. "We can go to this one."

"Alright", he said before putting his car in drive.

I handed him his phone back.

"Let me put my seatbelt on. Cause I remember you used to act like you was a Nascar driver", I hummed as I put my seatbelt on.

He just chuckled.

"Where you be going cause I don't never see you outside."

"I don't- I don't be in the streets."

"You tryna say I be in the streets?"

"Yeah", I said and looked over at him. "I was lurking one day and I was just like wow."

"Lurking where?", he chuckled.

"..Just on the internet", I said making us laugh.

"What you found out bout me?"

"I was like he in the club?! What? He having a time ain't it", I said covering my face as I laughed.

"I ain't start going to the club til I stopped messing with you. Had to do something with my free time."

"Club life huh", I said and patted the corner of my eyes.

"Nah nah nah. I found friends and they introduced me to the club."

"Damn... so you saying you ain't have friends when you was with me?"

"I had friends but I was with you majority of the time. But I started hanging out with more people."

"Oh so you got a new group of friends.”

"Oh my god”, he said with a chuckle.

"I'm just saying", I laughed.

"So what took you so long, cause you was dodging me", he started.

"No no no. I wasn't dodging you I was tryna edit a vlog and upload-", I started before he cut me off.

"No not today, I'm talking about in general. Cause you had everybody thinking I'm the problem."

"Had them thinking it was you? You had a video shoot", I said as I glanced over at him.

"I had to go to New York. But before that- you was dodging me like crazy."

"Whatever", I said and playfully rolled my eyes. "How I'm dodging but you don't text back? Make it make sense boo."

"And why you tell everybody I blocked you on Twitter?", I asked.

"Cause you did", he simply replied.

"I mean."

"I mean they kept telling me you'd link with me and do a video. And I was wondering how that was gone happen and I'm blocked", he said arching his brow.

"Yeah but you had my number. I sent you my new number."

"I obviously didn't have it saved. I just saved it."

"Mmm", I hummed.

"I'm so geeked", I said as I set my camera up to face me on the table. "Tell me why he paid for my food?!"

"Chile.. he was all like I got you. Just go find us a good table", I said mocking his voice. "Then gone smile at me.. almost went weak in the knees."

I shook my head as I looked over at him by the drink fountain.

"Gone have me falling all over again."

"Questions while we wait?", I asked putting my phone down.

"Sure", he hummed, turning to face me.

"You start", I said.

"You ever felt like I disrespected you on the internet?"

"Disrespected me?.. uh I feel like once you got around your friends you kinda did. Cause I thought we agreed we wasn't gone speak on each other."

"When?", he asked, arching his brow at me.

"It wasn't necessarily you it was yo lil group, team or whatever."

"What they was saying?"

"You know-", I said and tilted my head. "You know what they was saying and posting... I was like daamn that's me."

He let out a deep breath before sitting back. "You gotta be more specific."

I leaned forward. "Should I bring up the context?"

He chuckled.

"People was texting and calling me talking bout 'why they speaking on you' and 'why they got yo name in-' you know. It was from people you around."

"They was making videos?"

"You acting dumb", I said sitting back and crossing my arms. "You acting like you don't know and stuff. Boy don't be acting all Hollywood."

"I'm not acting Hollywood, I'm just trying to see what you talking about", he said with a laugh.

"You know what.. we both just gone be clueless then", I hummed. "Ask me another question."

"What have you learned from dating?"

"What have I learned from dating?", I asked then arched my brow at him. "Dating what?"

"Dating in general or whatever the fuck you been doing, you been living", he chuckled.

"I don't be dating. I'm just lifing."

He smacked his lips as he looked at me with a be for real expression.

"Didn't you just say we not being Hollywood and what the the fuck is lifing?"

"I'm not being Hollywood. I'm being so for real. I just been chilling”, I chuckled.

"Right", he said playfully before he squinted his eyes at me. "So who was that one dude?"

"What dude?! You imagining things. Ian date nobody after you. But you on the other hand", I said and uncrossed my arms. "How many girls four? Five?"

"You pushing it", he laughed.

"You was just living I don't blame you", I chuckled.

"We good right?", he asked as he wiped his hands clean.

"I think.. you gotta ask yourself that."

"You think I got a grudge against you?", he asked and tilted his head.

"Ion know", I said before sipping my drink.

"I don't have nothing against you.. I always wanted to see you win and shine."

"Ok love that", I hummed. "I just got one last question."

"Ok. Ask away", he hummed.

"Did you ever miss me after we broke up?"

"If I'm being real, yeah."

"Do you still miss me?"

He sighed before he chuckled. "How you say your outro. Thanks for watching. Like and comment."

He picked my camera up and turned it to him.

"Jack", I chuckled. "You miss me don't you?"

"Nah I don't", he said looking dead at the camera with a straight face.

"Look at me and say it."

He looked up and locked eyes with me.

"Say you don't miss me", I said taunting him.

"I don't-", he started. "How you turn this camera off?"

I gently took it out his grasp and turned it to me.

"Obviously he doesn't want to admit he misses me but that's alright. He doesn't have to say it, I know he does", I chuckled as I looked at the camera.

Violins and Violets - Series - WIP page

1784: Katharina Schmidt and her brother Hans grew up composing and performing music for royalty all over Europe. Now they are adults, only Hans is allowed to pursue his music, while Katharina's father tells her it's time to find a husband and settle down. Katharina's attempts to do as she's told only convince her that it's not what she wants to do, and she must decide how far she's willing to go to keep making music.

Hello, friends! It's been a minute since I updated the links on my blog, and I have just seen that I still have the "Beta Readers Wanted" post linked to the "Violins and Violets (WIP)" button... from the draft I finished and started querying in 2019 / 2020!

Things have... changed somewhat since then...

"Violins and Violets" is now a series, of (I expect) five books. None of them have titles yet, so I'm just referring to them as "Violins and Violets 1," etc. I thought it was time to make a new WIP page.

Book 1 tag - WIP page - first draft completed in December 2023, working on second draft in March and April 2024. (Earlier titled "Ladies Don't Write Music" - but this may be a better name for Book 2.)

Book 2 tag - first draft completed in January 2024, hoping to write second draft in November and December 2024.

Book 3 tag - early planning stages, hoping to create outline in May 2024, with a view to writing the first draft in June, July and August 2024. Hoping to redraft in 2025.

Book 4 tag - hoping to plan and draft in 2025.

Book 5 tag - hoping to plan and draft in 2025 or 2026.

Series tag - all posts made about "Violins and Violets" since I realised it needed to be a series, no matter what book I'm talking about.

Everything "Violins and Violets" - the whole story, right from the beginning, when I started writing the first draft of a single book for Camp NaNoWriMo in April 2018.

One-Shots - short stories that I've written for the "Violins and Violets" world.

"Vogeltje" - another novel that takes place in the same world, and features some of the same characters.

I'm trying to bring each book in somewhere around 75,000 words, taking three months to write a first draft, and two months for each subsequent draft. I find it easier to focus on the story proper when I write quickly and regularly, so when I have a draft on the go, I try to write every day. Between drafts, I am trying to take whole months off writing, so that I can rest my creative muscles, as it were.

Characters:

Katharina Schmidt - musical prodigy and composer who performed for royalty as a child, but is no longer allowed, because she's a woman. Disguises herself as "Sebastien", and flees Salzburg to start a composing career in Prague

Hans Schmidt - brother of Katharina, who is also a musical prodigy and composer, but is allowed to pursue his music as an adult.

Franz Schmidt - solicitor; father of Katharina and Hans, who wants to see his daughter married well enough to put silly ideas of music out of her head.

Julia Schmidt - lady of leisure; mother of Katharina and Hans; wife of Franz, who loves to make tapestries and knitted garments; wants the best for her children and is willing to let Franz decide what this is.

Barbara Kirkmann - housemaid to the Schmidts, Katharina's closest friend and confidante.

Elisabeth Meyer - daughter of Franz' boss, Katharina's first "acceptable" friend, and the oldest sister of many siblings; keen to get married and start a life of her own.

Miléna von Tritten - Elisabeth's best friend, and daughter of one of the Meyer firm's wealthiest clients, Baron von Tritten; expected to marry a noble, but totally absorbed in Johann Schneider.

Johann Schneider - training to be a magistrate, under pressure to get married, but totally uninterested in... anyone? All the ladies want him; none of them can catch him. Absolutely tone-deaf, but loves to watch musicians play; friends with Katharina.

Louisa Schneider - Johann's younger sister, also tone-deaf, but keen to become a musician under Katharina's tutelage.

Magdalena Fialová - an opera singer who wants to get more young women into music; one of "Sebastien's" first and best friends in Prague.

Miklós Kovács - a fellow violinist who persuades the management of the Malá Strana Opera House to give "Sebastien" an audition. Best friend of Magdalena, and very close with "Sebastien".

Background:

Yes, Katharina Schmidt is based on Maria Anna "Nannerl" Mozart, who deserved a much better life than she got. I have always wondered what would have happened if she had defied her father when he told her to stop composing. Would she have known as much fame as her brother?

Yes, Katharina Schmidt is a lesbian. That's because she's only based on a real person; she isn't actually Nannerl Mozart. I have no idea what Nannerl Mozart would have called herself, or how she felt, and I think it would be rude for me to try to guess. This part of Katharina's character is inspired less by history than by my own experiences and desire to see more representation of Queer people in historical fiction. (She's not the only person in the series who isn't straight! Who are the others? You'll have to read the books to find out... or just follow here; I'm yappy about it.)

If you're interested in K-dramas but don't know where to begin, and aren't interested in (or would like to take a break from) romantic storylines, then this is for you!

P.S.: Some of these dramas may contain romantic side plots that don't necessarily define the main storyline. List not sorted in any particular order, and only includes completed dramas.

Stranger (2017; 2019)

A political crime thriller full of red herrings, "Stranger" (Season 1) follows an investigation into the murder of a man who has bribed countless officials from multiple levels and branches of government. Led by stoic prosecutor Hwang Shi Mok (Cho Seung Woo) and feisty detective Han Yeo Jin (Bae Doona), this well-paced, well-acted drama is full of twists and turns that will make you suspect everyone at some point.

Kingdom (2019; 2020)

Historical political drama meets zombie thriller in the 2019 hit "Kingdom" (Season 1). The story follows Crown Prince Yi Chang (Ju Ji Hoon) as he investigates an outbreak of a mysterious plague that turns average citizens into rabid monsters while fighting to keep his rightful place as heir to the throne. The hit series has led to a second season and a prequel TV movie "Ashin of the North" (2021).

Signal (2016)

Featuring a mysterious walkie-talkie that links the past to the present, "Signal" is one of the most beloved police dramas of the last decade because of its refreshing take on the genre and the top-notch performances of its three leads: Kim Hye Soo, Lee Je Hoon, and Jo Jin Woong.

The Uncanny Counter (2020)

"The Uncanny Counter" is a comedy-drama about four "counters", or grim reapers who have been lent superhuman abilities by a group of spirits. Their main job is to stop demons who possess violent criminals that become more powerful by consuming the souls of their victims. Funny, colorful, and action-packed, the show features wonderful performances from the main actors: Jo Byeong Gyu, Yoon Joon Sang, Kim Se Jeong, and (my personal favorite) Yeom Hye Ran. The hit series has been granted a second season.

Racket Boys (2021)

If you need a feel-good drama that's not too heavy on the tears, crime, and lovey-dovey tropes, then this may be for you. "Racket Boys" is about an underdog middle school badminton team that dreams to make a mark on the national level and beyond. The rural setting and endearing ensemble cast, led by the talented Tang Jun Sang, allow for lighthearted moments but are never too cartoonish. A puppy love storyline exists between the leads, but it's very wholesome and innocent, and given far less importance than the struggle surrounding the national tournament.

Squid Game (2021)

International smash hit "Squid Game" is about a mysterious organization that selects individuals with impossible debt to participate in a series of children's games to have a shot at winning 45.6 billion won. The catch: only the winner gets to live. Features an amazing ensemble cast led by Lee Jung Jae, Park Hae Soo, and impressive newcomer Jung Ho Yeon.

Dear My Friends (2016)

A slice-of-life comedy drama featuring a stellar ensemble cast of the most accomplished Korean actors and actresses over 60, "Dear My Friends" follows 40-year-old writer Park Wan (Go Hyun Jung) as she chronicles the stories of her mother, her aunts, and their families. There are two romantic side stories here but the overall plot is more invested in how your friends can become your family especially after you reach a certain age. Think "Golden Girls" but in Korea. Praise-worthy acting from everyone involved, especially the main quintet: Na Moon Hee, Kim Hye Ja, Go Doo Shim, Park Won Sook, and Oscar winner Youn Yuh Jung.

Live (2018)

"Live" is a slice-of-life, police procedural drama that tells the story of rookies and veterans at Hongil Station in Seoul, where there is no shortage of petty and violent crimes. The crimes featured examine the decisions that South Korean cops have to make especially in dangerous situations wherein the gray areas become even grayer. There are romantic storylines between the four leads but they never overshadow the cases. Wonderful acting, especially from Bae Sung Woo and Bae Jeong Ok who play the veterans Oh Yang Chon and Ahn Jang Mi, respectively. Also stars funny man Lee Kwang Soo and the angelic Jung Yu Mi (Train to Busan).

Vincenzo (2021)

Born in South Korea, adopted into an Italian family, mafia lawyer Vincenzo Cassano (Song Joong Ki) flies back to Seoul after falling out with his adopted brother following the death of his boss/father-figure. His mission is to retrieve gold hidden beneath the dilapidated Geumga Plaza before it is ultimately demolished by the evil Babel Group that constantly harrasses its tennants to move out. Teaming up with the feisty lawyer Hong Cha Young (Jeon Yeo Been, Vincenzo uses mafia tactics in his war against the conglomerate that thinks itself above the law. What sounds like a heavy premise is offset by the physical and witty comedy provided by the charismatic leads and supporting cast. There is romance between the leads (who share great chemistry nonetheless) but it is by no means the driving force of this story. They could have recasted this with two male leads as more of a bromance story and the outcome would be quite similar, but Jeon Yeo Been gives a unique, quirky flair to her character that makes her difficult to replace.

Hyena (2020)

I know I said this wasn't a list for romantic K-Dramas but hear me out. There's romance but it's not what you think (the leads kiss a grand total of 3 times, twice in the first ep then once a little later). "Hyena" explores the world of corporate lawyers who serve the South Korean 1%. It's a dog-eat-dog world where the most conniving and least picky hyena reigns supreme. The hyena in question would be the brilliant renegade lawyer Jang Geum Ja (Kim Hye Soo). Sparks fly as she goes head to head with the by-the-book, elite lawyer Yoon Hee Jae (Ju Ji Hoon), whose ideals are constantly challenged as his world unravels around him. The cases are challenging and the solutions that the leads come up with are intriguing. Romance doesn't drive this drama, but the chemistry between the leads is undeniable.

It was a boring evening. No surf nazi to pick fight with, not so many teenagers to terrorize… Beside giving death glare to passerby with David, there was not much to do. Paul and Marko were having fun on the rides. As David and Dwayne went hunting, for the later was hungry, you decided to not join them as you were not. Instead, you started to walk around the boardwalk. You were a full vampire after all, there was not much that could decently harm you even if you were on your own.

That’s how you spotted him. Dark blond curls, jeans hugging a nice butt, leather jacket. By his looks, he was a runaway. Feeling stared at, he turned in your direction. Those blue eyes! Like Paul’s, you knew that you could drown in them. He was so beautiful, you had to show him to your boys.

You decided to walk to him confidently. You were sure in your guts that he had what it takes to be a Lost Boy. “So, what’s your name pretty runaway?”

That’s how you got to learn a little about Billy. You weren’t aware of where David and Dwayne went, so you decided to lead him to your blonds instead.

You found them sitting together, not very far from a concert. While Marko was quite skeptical, Paul seemed to approve of your choice, not even knowing if Billy was meant to be food or friend. You guys went on together, as you warned David and Dwayne by the mind link you all shared of where your intentions were laying by. David was the one keeping all of you safe, he would always have the last word anyway.

When David looked at him, he seemed to see what you saw because he asked Billy if he had somewhere to go. When he admitted that he didn’t, David offered him that Billy could stay by your place. Billy was okay with that, if he could come with his own car. To your surprise, your lover accepted. He led you all to his car, a nice blue Chevrolet Camaro. Youn could see in your boys’ eyes that they were approving of his taste.

And his driving! Fast and reckless, he adapted easily to the way you all rode your bikes.

He accepted to go down the rickety-looking entrance, even looking less anxious when David told him the story of the place, and he visibly loosened up when Paul mentioned the absence of parents or adults. You offered him a smile as you settled down next to him on a couch, and caught him looking at Paul and Marko, already in their own little world. Your boyfriends had always been very tactile with each other’s. Billy was looking… envious? If Billy was really into men, you did a great job at picking the babe.

Since he was wearing a Metallica t-shirt, you strike a conversation with him about music. Quickly, Paul and Marko come around, launching themselves in the conversation that became loud and animated.

Glancing at David, you saw him talking with Dwayne, most likely about what to do with Billy. And when you see them bringing the jeweled bottle, you know that Billy is meant to stay.

You know that it’s David’s blood in it, so when he offered you the bottle to give an example to Billy, you make a show of drinking the crimson gift of your lover. Licking your lips, you turn to the newcomer.

“Sleep all day. Party all night. Never grow old. Never die. Be one of us Billy. Drink it”

You can see the hesitation in his eyes, so expressive, windows to his soul.

“Don’t you wanna be one of us?” David’s voice broke the silence. Looking at David, Billy brought the bottle to his lips… and drank. You all erupted into cheers, greeting the pretty boy into his new life as a Lost Boy.

The night turned into a joyous party, the five of you putting him at ease. As the sun come closer, you helped the halfling get his stuff from his car, and showed him the way to a deeper part of the cave, not too far of your sleeping room so you could reach your new boy if you needed even in the middle of the day.

Once you and Dwayne were sure that Billy was comfortably settled down, the two of you joined your lovers and flew next to them.

The next evening, you woke up early and went to check on Billy. The boy was already awake, and greeted you as you leant on what would have been a doorframe in a normal room. Your scent and the boys’ lingered everywhere, as it was your room when you were still human, and the one you would usually use when things were getting hotter, so it didn’t surprise you when you realized that Billy had your smell lingering on him. David will enjoy it, you thought. I will enjoy what? You repeated your train of thoughts to David, who took his place behind you, wrapping his arms around your waist. Somehow his display of affection seemed to put Billy at ease.

While Paul was helping Billy to get ready, the rest of you were wondering how to get Billy to turn. Starting a blood bath in front of him and let him give in to the thirst? Tell him and let him pick his first kill himself? Tonight? Next week? It was finally decided that he would get a few days, and that the rest of you would let him get comfortable around you all, while you would drop hints and see if he would pick up.

The days passed, and you grew fond of the half vampire.

After a week since Billy’s arrival, you all pilled up in his camaro, as he drove you all to a quiet place where you could get as high and as drunk as you wished.

David had told you that Billy had picked up on the creature of the night thing, but he had not said anything about it yet. You knew that it was only a matter of time before Billy wad finally turning, so you all let him enjoy being half for the last few nights of his life.

At least it was what David had planned. When that angry man barged in, yelling, you all saw Billy freeze. And you got to know what he was running away from.

David immediately put himself between Billy and his father, protecting our boy. Then it all went down really fast.

The man tried to get at David, blood got shed, which seemed to make Billy react. The blond launched himself at his father, protecting the vampire that had welcomed him with open arms. Before the man could do anything to protect himself, Billy had vamped out, ripped his throat open, drinking from the wound.

When he got up, covered in blood, Billy whipped his mouth with the back of his right hand.

“He deserved it”. No one said anything about it. Instead, David smiled.

“Welcome, Lost Boy. You’re one of us now.”
