god I was just thinking abt this yesterday... it's such a fun concept bc it could go so many different ways. I mean I think we would've gotten the same sort of "betraying the bureau" bit that we get after the suffering game (though. with Magnus being. you know. alive), but I think the lead-up to that would have been way different. like even if Taako figured out that the bureau was a front and that Lucretia had been lying/withholding information I don't think he would have been able to convince Magnus and Merle to fully go along with investigating to the extent they did after the suffering game. because Magnus doesn't know he's a red robe. he's got no reason to dig into the bureau's business because he thinks he's doing good and helping the world and wants to believe that the bureau's intentions are pure. and I think Merle would agree. he sees Lucretia as a good person and a potential friend, he sees the good in the people he trusts and he wouldn't want to disrupt that dynamic unless he had good reason

but Taako would most definitely try to investigate. and I think Magnus and Merle would end up tagging along just because they don't want their beloved wizard getting into trouble by himself. and then I think they manage to find the baby voidfish and from there everything kind of falls apart. I imagine they immediately decide to try to find Barry, but also I feel like Taako has a moment of just utter rage and sorrow where he's determined to go looking for Lup immediately before Merle and Magnus try to reason with him that Barry can help with that. and then he kind of just shuts down emotionally. and then they manage to find Barry and at some point afterwards, he and Taako put two and two together and break the umbra staff. and then once Lup is fully back and caught up the five of them end up reaching Lucretia again and the story plays out in a similar manner of them defeating the hunger, but with a lot more rushed interpersonal conflict
