The Shoebox Problem
A/n: For @call-me-coley . Thank you for talking through ideas with me @yes-i-am-happyaspie .
December was a busy month for Tony Stark. With the holidays on the horizon, the hero planned multiple galas and charity events. At least once a week balls were attended by Tony. Sometimes the man went by himself. Other times, Pepper would join him. Even Peter accompanied him once or twice.
Only those closest to him knew the real reason he made an extensive amount of plans during the winter month. As a distraction from his parents’ deaths.
But that’s neither here nor there. This story is about the shoebox problem. Underneath Tony’s tree were dozens of gifts. Every one about the size of a shoebox. And they were all addressed to the same person: Peter Parker.
Tony was overjoyed to learn Peter and May would be spending Christmas with Pepper and himself. The holiday was usually a lonely one for the billionaire. Sure, Pepper would spend the day with him. But while she received calls from her extended family wishing her “Merry Christmas,” Tony’s phone remained silent.
But this year would be different. With Peter and May Parker keeping the man company, there’s no way he could possibly feel lonely.
So when his phone rang with Peter’s contact, his heart skipped a beat. Did something come up? Did they have to cancel. Tony hesitantly answered it.
“Hello?”
“Merry Christmas Mr. Stark!” Peter exclaimed. Through the receiver, Tony could hear the boy coughing.
“Merry Christmas Peter,” Tony replied. “What time are you and May coming over?”
“Actually…” the boy trailed off and Tony’s anxieties began to return full force. Of course, spending Christmas with his mentee was too good to be true.
But the boy’s sentence surprised him. “I’m downstairs…”
“Downstairs?” Tony asked. It didn’t take him long to realize exactly what Peter was implying when he said “downstairs.” The teen had a tendency to end up in Medbay. Tony sighed, “What did you do this time?”
“Nothing,” Peter replied, before breaking into a coughing fit. “I have the flu.”
Tony frowned. He then looked back at the tree with dozens of boxes under it. Even if the boy was in Medbay, he could still make his Christmas a good one.
“I’ll be right there.”
Tony entered Avenger’s Medbay about half an hour later. He was carrying a few boxes in his hands. Peter gave the man a wary smile, despite being in the sterile hospital room.
“Hey Mr. Stark,” Peter greeted. “Thank you for the gifts… you really didn’t have to get me anything.”
“Don’t thank me yet,” Tony replies. “There’s more than this.”
Peter’s eyes widen. And this is where the shoebox problem comes in.
About a month before the holiday, Tony asked Peter what he wanted for Christmas. Peter replied nothing big. “Think shoebox sized,” he said specifically. But that’s the only limitation the boy set. He didn’t give Tony a price limit. Nor a limit on the gifts themselves.
So that’s how Tony ended up carrying a pile of medium sized gifts into Peter’s hospital room.
“Mr. Stark…” Peter frowns. A shiver wracks his body and he pulls the sheet closer to himself. “How much did you spend on me…?”
“Nothing is bigger than a shoebox,” Tony deflected. And Peter could only sigh. The man had a point.
Seeing Peter’s defeat, Tony handed him a gift to open. It took him longer than usual due to the IV in his left arm, but he eventually got it open nonetheless.
Peter raised a brow, “I thought I said nothing big-“
“Nuh uh-uh,” Tony quickly could Peter off. “It’s shoebox sized.”
And unfortunately, the man was right. “Thank you for the Switch, Mr. Stark…”
Tony beamed, “Ready for the next one?”
Peter nodded and let Tony continue to hand him gifts. The boy realized he probably should’ve given Tony a gift limit. He definitely should’ve given Tony a price limit. Because he’d ended up with a new phone, new watch, tickets to Disneyland, tickets to Hamilton, video games for his Switch, and multiple gift cards.
“Okay buddy,” Tony handed a gift to Peter. “Last one.”
Peter opened it to see a teddy bear dressed in a little Iron Man suit. The boy beamed. “He’s my favorite!”
Tony chuckled. “Really? It was a gag gift,”
“It’s you,” Peter replied. “You’re my favorite,”
“Oh…” Tony glanced back at the sickly boy. He was ignoring his games and new phone to cuddle with a cheap teddybear that was dressed as his mentor.
The boy let out a yawn and placed his head on the pillow. The iron man teddy in his arms. “Thanks for the gifts,” Peter murmurs. “Merry Christmas, Dad.”
Tony’s heart skipped a beat. Peter called him “dad.” The man placed a kiss on the boy’s forehead as he drifted off to sleep. “Merry Christmas.”

Do you have any IronDad recommendations?
I have looked at this every day since you asked it, and felt overwhelmed every time, because there are SO. MANY. GREAT. STORIES. AND. AUTHORS. And because I had anxiety about forgetting/leaving people out. But I'm going to answer anyway.
A small (and very incomplete) collection of some Irondad authors I definitely recommend (according to my Ao3 subscriptions): I have read/want to read/will read pretty much everything they write. Here’s stuff I’ve recently read, or am reading, that stands out to me, and I wanted to recommend. This is by no means a comprehensive list of the good stories I’ve read lately, but a few that are worth sharing!

The Meaning of Inevitable Series by (Mendeia) If you haven’t been reading this series, you’re missing out, I promise. Mendeia is a master storyteller!

- 89! I have a lot of other works that never made the move from LJ to a03 tho.

- 1,100,235. I like to think this is an indication of how my mental health is, lmao.

- Mosly MCU Irondad but I have caved and started writing Heartstopper lately. And I have some Our Flag Means Death fics in the works. I used to write a lot of McShep for Stargate Atlantis, as well as Supernatural, Harry Potter, Torchwood & Doctor Who.

If You Find That You Feel Lost, I'll Be Your Ticket Back which I think has a happy ending to it but others disagree. And Films About Ghost which also is a happy/sad ending. There's resolutions but it's not what everyone wants.
7. What’s the fic you wrote with the happiest ending?
Hmm, I think they all end kinda happy? lol Maybe Operation: Graduation but it's very light hearted.
8. Do you get hate on fics?
Yeah, not very often but I think sometimes I like moving away from tropes and mixing it up a bit. For We Are Bound by Symmetry got some hate on how I handled the bio!Dad thing. We Always Walked a Very Thin Line got some unexpected hate! And recently there was an anon on Edges of Your Name that poked a little.
9. Do you write smut? If so, what kind?
Yes, I'm writing one now, lol. I mostly do slash but I've dabbled in het a few times.
10. Do you write crossovers? What’s the craziest one you’ve written?
Nah, not really.

Nope! I don't look for it anyway and I doubt anyone would want to steal my shit, lol.

Yes!! Oh my god, someone did two fics in RUSSIAN and I was so happy I cried! Honestly I felt so good about it!
13. Have you ever co-written a fic before?
A very long time ago, I did a Hanson shoebox AU with my friend, haha. And even before that me and my high school bestie cowork some Hanson fics but nope! I'd love to though. Someone cowrite something with me, please!!!
14. What’s your all time favourite ship?
Ngggh. This is hard because my brain is like MCSHEP BITCH (John Sheppard/Rodney McKay) and then immedatly followed by Nick Nelson/Charlie Spring, Aziraphale/Crowley, Ed/Stede, Jack/Ianto. And I just realized a majority of these are CANON which NEVER HAPPENS TO ME and I think I might die of happiness knowing my ships are canon. (Also wow my brain did not come up with a single het ship lol opps)
15. What’s a WIP you want to finish but doubt you ever will?
My WIP folder has about 49 fics in it, so yeah. There's a Richard Parker Alive but Terrible Parent fic that I was pretty far into before I gave up. I'd like to actually finish that but I've lost the plot bunny somewhere.
16. What are your writing strengths?
Hmm, I dunno, honestly. I think I can write certain characters well like the funny sarcastic ones (Peter Parker, Charlie Spring, Rodney McKay and even Tony Stark) because it's just me, hi, that's me.
17. What are your writing weaknesses?
Aside from spelling, lolz? I think I get too wordy sometimes, I have to cut paragraphs off in editing because I just keep going. I also think I can't end a scene to save my life sometimes and get frustrated when I don't think the end point works.
18. Thoughts on writing dialogue in another language in fic?
I don't think I really have? I dunno, Nick hasn't spoken French in a fic yet, damn I might just have to add that soon...
19. First fandom you wrote for?
OKAY if we're going to be for reals about this, most likely the Hobbit or The Lion The Witch and the Wardrobe. I was writing fic as a kid (self insert no less) without realizing it. Later I'd write "episodes" of like Rainbow Brite, or Carebears, Inspector Gadget, Captain Planet. I'd also write one off Marvel/DC stuff with a self insert superhero (aka me with powers, usually I was an x-man lmao).
20. Favourite fic you’ve written?
Nhggh, that's hard. I like, act like I like what I write but I also end up like, hating it? I think I really love how Just an Intern turned out, from conception to finishing it, it was a fun write. And I quiet like how Edges of Your Name has come together too. But I think I had a little magic in me when I wrote There is Always One Last Light to Turn Out somehow. I wrote the thing in like 2 days and I think it came out rather well for something I mostly texted to speech as I was driving to work, ha.

At present, I’m only really active in the MCU/Irondad fandom; but I’ve written in the past for Marvel, Sherlock, Deadpool, TASM, Supernatural, Glee, Doctor Who, & Psych.
What are your top 5 fics by kudos?

Do you respond to comments? Why or why not?
I do! For the most part. At a certain point I fall behind in responding and always feel a little awkward responding to older comments (a pleasant shyness); but I read all of them and deeply appreciate every single one.
What is the fic you wrote with the angstiest ending?
I think my answer to that might be different than other people’s answers! I’d probably say count to ten; it’s a fill I wrote for the Whumptober 2019 prompt ‘shaky hands’, primarily from Tony’s perspective, post-Snap.
What’s the fic you wrote with the happiest ending?
Happy in tone, or in what happened? I like to think all of my fics end on the happiest note possible; I can’t stomach bad endings. Put em through hell, but make it worth it at the end.
I’d still have to say the world is not kind. It’s the way I choose to believe Endgame ended (until I get around to writing that giant fix-it).
Do you get hate on fics?
Not that I’ve noticed. Occasionally people will get a little pointed, but I try not to take anything personally; I’m just glad they got to the end and were moved by it enough, in whatever way they were moved, to comment.
Do you write smut? If so, what kind?
I have written smut, primarily M/M, but only rarely in my published fics.
Do you write crossovers? What’s the craziest one you’ve written?
I’ve written crossovers; I’d like to write more of them eventually. The craziest one was The Adventures of Dean Winchester & Friends, for the SuperWho Big Bang 2012. It was ridiculous, self-indulgent crack. We’ve all been there.
Have you ever had a fic stolen?
Not to my knowledge!
Have you ever had a fic translated?
Surprisingly yes! I was honored and pleasantly bewildered. Peter Parker’s Night Clinic for Kinda Crappy, Accidental Superheroes was translated into Suomi (Finnish).
Have you ever co-written a fic before?
I have not had the pleasure! I’d really love to, I think that would be a unique experience and I love collaborative art.
What’s your all time favourite ship?
Oh god all time?? I presume romantic and not platonic ships, but I’ll give both. Romantic has to be Sterek, once a Teen Wolf girlie, always a Teen Wolf girlie. Platonic is Irondad, bar none.
What’s a WIP you want to finish but doubt you ever will?
It’s a threeway tie between the sequel to the world is not kind, my Pepper Potts character study piece, and the Infinity War / Endgame rewrite. Of the three, that last one has the least words put to page; but never say die, I still chip away at them all.
What are your writing strengths?
I can write a good emotional through-line. I like to call it emotions porn. Description has never been my issue, and commas love me.
What are your writing weaknesses?
Writing action, or solid plot. I’m not much of a mastermind, so I have a hard time with penning longer works.
Thoughts on writing dialogue in another language in fic?
I’ve done it before when necessary; I’m forced to use Google Translate but if anyone ever wants to correct me I know it’s probably wrong! 🤣
First fandom you wrote for?
Since the site is gone from the face of the earth, I’ll tell you. Jonas Brothers RPF.

- I have fics posted for harry potter, dungeons and daddies, and irondad. my current wips are for hp, irondad, and i have one atla wip that may never see the light of day based on how fast progress on it is (like… 500 words a year? if that? it’s bad)

I do my absolute best to!!! The main reason I write fanfic is because I love the community around it! But sometimes I have to choose between responding to comments or working on the fic they commented on and I get the feeling that people would prefer that I write the fic rather than respond to their comments XD
6. What is the fic you wrote with the angstiest ending?
I’m not much of one for angsty endings, I love angsty beginnings/middles, but I like to end on hope. So that being said, I do have an incredibly angsty ending that I might write for worth living for i might also go the sappy happy ending i originally had in mind. i might do both. who knows.
7. What’s the fic you wrote with the happiest ending?
since I already answered the previous one with a fic that doesn’t have an actual ending, i’ll avoid saying how like home for this one since that technically does not have an ending. instead, i’ll say This Is Our Salvation a real world-ish drarry AU that’s kinda weird but is the second fic that came to mind and not enough people have read it to be able to contradict me so yeehaw baby
8. Do you get hate on fics?
much less now that I moderate comments on how like home! but yeah I do still sometimes get it, and it’s a bummer
9. Do you write smut? If so, what kind?
not often, but like I love the community around fanfic, and people are weird about commenting on and interacting with explicit fics so it’s just not what I gravitate towards with my extremely limited writing time these days

gonna combine these previous two into one because i once had someone use google translate to translate my fic into spanish and then posted it to wattpad (all without notifying me, as i request in my permissions statement on ao3) and what’s hilarious is spanish is the one language i’d be able to tell that it’s google translated rather than earnestly translated. i’ve had other people request to translate hlh to other languages, i gave them the go ahead, but as far as i can tell, nothing ever came of that
13. Have you ever co-written a fic before?
a couple times! the longest fic I co-wrote is no longer on my ao3 for various reasons, but I also worked with minryll on the aforementioned phoenixes are pests and @yes-i-am-happyaspie have a fic we’re co-writing that i SWEAR i will get back to!!!
14. What’s your all time favourite ship?
i don’t like… go that hard for romantic ships.
15. What’s a WIP you want to finish but doubt you ever will?
i will finish all my wips i swear to god. i will be eighty fucking years old chipping away at these bitches if i must, but they WILL be finished.
16. What are your writing strengths?
introspection baby! unfortunately that means my characters are probably way more emotionally intelligent than they should be based on canon but such is life
17. What are your writing weaknesses?
summarizing. there’s a reason hlh spans like. two weeks of time. that’s because i hate summarizing when i could spell out everything that happens. and i know it’s a problem and i’m working on it!!! but like not as hard as i should because it’s hardddddd 😭
18. Thoughts on writing dialogue in another language in fic?
I haven’t really run into this issue, but hypothetically I’d need to find a confident speaker of the language to give my dialogue a pass before I’d be willing to publish it
