Blog 9: Course Reflection

This is by far one of the most enjoyable classes I have ever taken at San Jose State University. As someone grew up playing video games and wanted to dabble in game design, Art 108 was the perfect opportunity to do so. Throughout the course, the lectures and labs helped build and sharpen my skills in game design. I appreciated the variety in lecture material as well as in the labs. Within the lectures, the MDA framework was the most helpful in terms of analyzing games and creating them. I can see myself using this in the future when playing a new game or when creating one of my own. Along with this, I enjoyed the game playing labs, the prototype and final assignments. These assignments helped me gain hands-on experience in playing and making video games within a team environment. I learnt the most in the final project by not only creating animations, assets, platforms and backgrounds but also working with programmers to implement them into the Unity engine to create a cohesive game. Overall, this class was a great experience and I learned an enormous amount about game design that I will most definitely be taking into my future. I look forward to continuing game design in the game development club next semester!

Journalism?

As a student in English literary studies, I have often gone back and forth between the idea of what I wanted to do after I graduate and most often than not, I want to pursue a career in journalism. It seems interesting and out of my comfort zone, since it somewhat means that you need to “put your name your there”. I still have no idea what exact role I want to take on in journalism only that the field seems very interesting to me. Today, in class we learned about ways to accomplish our studies to follow the career path we hope for. For journalism, you need to show an interested in the medias since you just show an attentiveness and like for journalists and must of today’s news are shared in the media. I have a friend whose mother now works and journalism, but she explained to me her journey from university to her now, career. She explained that she also, studied to have a BAC in English literary studies (the degree I’m pursuing as of right now) and that she then, decided to study for her master’s in journalism. That was her journey as a student with the hope of finding a career in journalism, and she knows loves her job and would not change a thing in her journey as a student, back in the day. Her story and today’s readings were very helpful and put into perspective the options and journey I can follow to achieve my goal.

Because the “shrodinger’s queerbait” nonsense will never go away, indulge me an analogy (and a long post).

wlw ships are the “made from scratch” cake in a world where we only ever expect cake mix from the box.

Say you have a show where, in the first interaction between a male and female character, there is a red box. It could be a Betty Crocker box of cake mix. Because all it takes is just one smile — one wink — one raised eyebrow— and the fans don’t question it. We’re clearly making a cake here. The box is red.

Meanwhile, you have two female characters building their own relationship that have elements that could build to romance. There are eggs in the fridge. A few more episodes, there’s flour in the pantry. Sugar. Baking powder. Queer fans start whispering…we could be making a cake here. Other fans scoff “you will read into anything. They’re just eggs! Everyone has eggs in their fridge!” Maybe so, maybe not. They are written off as discrete ingredients, nothing to see here.

That red box is still sitting in the pantry. Obviously we’re going with that one, and it’s definitely cake mix. That guy and girl stood next to each other again.

The wlw relationship is now full-on batter. It was a cake recipe all along, but it’s not baked yet. The crowd that wrote off every ingredient is now saying the writers are just going to “squander” that box that could be ready-made cake mix or that they’re being “forced” to bake a cake with the very ingredients the writers deliberately bought and put in their pantry.

Now it’s in the oven, the cake is baking. That crowd will still insist it’s forced, or maybe its actually something else, or it’s rushed, or it’s pandering. Whether the writers painstakingly built a pantry to make the cake they truly wanted or they were cultivating good ingredients and realized they had the fixings for a more decadent cake and went there, it doesn’t matter. It’s still a recipe. One that fans who always have to piece together ingredients had hoped for or saw from the get-go, despite being scoffed at and disparaged. Just because that crowd didn’t see (or refused to see) those ingredients as part of a whole, doesn’t make it any less of a recipe.

And wlw fans shouldn’t have to keep writing essays to demonstrate that the wlw “cake” has all the ingredients every cake mix does, or keep pointing out that fans were ready to believe a cake was being baked when they saw a nondescript box, but that they’ll do anything to discredit or doubt the cake from scratch that’s now cooling off on the counter.

It is partly a function of heteronormativity from the audience in immediately seeing romance in any whisper of interaction between m/f characters and passing off all charged interactions between female characters are sisterly or platonic. And it also comes from writers, who are either being cautious so as not to spook corporate overlords or audiences, or who are preserving plausible deniability.

To take the analogy further, box cake mix is fine! It works! It is, practically speaking, what a lot of folks know by default. I thought I was a Duncan Hines girl once myself. Vanilla cake mix has the ingredients measured out, it’s a safe bet, it tastes like cake.

But it doesn’t mean every red box is cake mix. And it doesn’t make the cake that had to be pieced together from scratch due to censorship, caution, time, narrative build-up, what-have-you, any less of a cake.

• In letterology the name you’re most known for is what matters most not your birth name necessarily. Example: Marilyn Monroe has 11 and 1 energy in it which has caused her to become one of the most famous people in the world (even though it isn’t her birth name) since 11 is associated with fame and 1 is leadership

• Keep track of the dates you meet people on or begin dating people on. This sets up the energy for friendships and relationships. Example: 6 days are great days to make friends, 11 days are great days to start a relationship

• 6 life path’s love children and are family people. Even if they don’t have a great relationship with the family they were born into they end up being great parents when they create their own family

• Life path 8’s are supposed to be materialistic in this life time and experience the material world

• 7 and 11 are the most spiritual numbers

• 1’s and 4’s have to work much harder for things they want in life than any of the other life path numbers. Nothing comes easy to them (28 life path’s are excluded)

• 7 life paths should never ride motorcycles. 7’s can be injured more easily than other numbers when doing dangerous/risky things.

• People with 4 energy don’t get away with crimes as easily as others can. They’re more likely to get caught and go to jail so if you’re a 4 it’s best to never surround yourself with criminals or be one

• Most 7 life paths have to start wearing glasses before 40

• As sad as it sounds when someone dies on an 8, 17, or 26 day it is deserved and either karma coming to them from something they did in this life or a past life

• 1’s and 7’s tend to have the most enemies in life

• People should avoid arguing with 8’s as they don’t like to and will bring the hammer down hard on you

• 22’s don’t like taking advice from people. They prefer to learn things on their own

you can make w/e argument you like about the angels later in the season because i stopped paying attention to them when naomi died but earlier on they are very obviously meant to be christian fundamentalists and you are supposed to sympathise with the individual angels because of the constant surveillance and punishment they have to deal with while simultaneously recognising that as a collective they are an unparalleled threat to humanity and that sam&dean are justified in disliking them. yes even if it hurts cas' feelings.
