My earliest quarantine project. A self-portrait about confinement, feeling imprisoned even though surrounded by things I love, staying in one’s bubble, and the sensation of being suspended in time. In some ways spring 2022 seems like the glimmer of hope is finally getting brighter. In other ways it feels like the calm before the storm. I’m entering the season with equal parts trepidation and cautious optimism. The mask mandate was lifted here a while ago, and like everyone else I’m starved for some semblance of normalcy. I know opinions vary, and where you stand is your business [I’m not here to argue], but personally I still don’t feel safe in many indoor spaces (e.g., grocery store aisles) or crowded outdoor venues (e.g., concerts) unless I have a mask at my disposal. Even though I’m vaxed and boosted, masking for some situations is the “new normal” as far as I’m concerned. I’m glad the snow has melted so I can begin entertaining on my patio again, but chairs will remain spaced 6 feet apart while I continue to curb my touchy-feely nature. I’m longing for the day when I no longer feel like I’m endangering the vulnerable people in my life by kissing them on the cheek, or risking my own health by shaking a stranger’s hand. Given that new lockdowns and new variants are still regular news, I feel like that day is still very far away.

It’s more than understandable if you’re hitting a bump right now, this has been going on a while but it’s not getting any easier. In fact it might feel like it’s getting harder. I get it. Even without all the anxiety surrounding covid, just having your life change so much can be overwhelming even as time continues to pass- it certainly was for me when I first got sick and I still have days when it all feels to much. But you’re going to be ok.

Take a deep breath, drink some water, know you’re not alone, and keep taking care of yourself. You’ve got this!

Post Lockdown - NZ

It’s felt too hard to write anything down.

Despite New Zealand getting down to 0 cases and being freed from lock down, it all feels a bit false at the moment. Like, everyone seems to have returned to BAU but we are SO FAR from BAU and the world is SO SO FAR from BAU. In NZ we still have cases coming in as Kiwis come home and idiots that ACTUALLY HAVE COVID here, escaping quarantine like the selfish bastards they are.

And it all doesn’t really make sense. If we become the only country COVID-free while the rest of the world spiral but then eventually they have herd-immunity and Kiwis don’t. So we’ll all have to get COVID anyway? Or get a vaccine, that hasn’t been properly trialled for years to see the long term effects. And maybe we wont have a choice. And that’s scary too.

On the one hand I am finding it very easy to just forget about it all and keep doing the day to day but mainly because actually thinking about it too in depth and what this will mean long term is overwhelming. But then so is everything that is slowly killing the human race. #climatechange

I hope I can keep my little human safe.

Tuesday 28th April 2020

Day 36

Well the rain has arrived and it stayed all day.

I pottered around this morning catching up on the dishes and tidying up,

I felt very unmotivated to work again today and only managed an hour here and there.

This evening I helped Issy do her hour of sewing for her DofE silver skills challenge and we started making a pair of shorts.

I caught up on the Race Across the World Final. Really glad Jen didn’t win although felt bad for them as it was bloody close. Found some of the people on Instagram once it was safe to look.

Before Covid

Isn’t is crazy to think of how life was before this pandemic?

Crowded places, shops, buses, restaurants and arenas.

Dancing in night clubs, at concerts and singing so loud with strangers.

Sharing food with your friends or even a smoke if thats what you want.

Meeting a person on a night out, your eyes meeting for the first time and having a sneaky kiss in the middle of a packed dance floor

Going to the beach, the cinema, shopping or just a road trip.

Now we can’t even meet our friends, not even our family and loved ones,

Hugs are frowned upon and don’t even think about a handshake,

those were the days when holding hands was intimate not frowned upon.

Seeing people smile as they walk by, smiling down at their phone, chatting with friends or flirting with their partner,

now it’s just face coverings and latex gloves.

“Wash your hands and keep your distance”

“We’re all in this together, we have to keep going to flatten the curve”

Yet right now we all feel alone,

the only contact we have is through technology.

When will it end?

When can we go back to normal?

I hope and pray for a normal tomorrow.

A Case for … Not Working from Home! Yawn … Yawwn … YAWWNNNN 😴😴😴 It’s almost two months for our lockdown in #Pakistan and working from home. The first month went well, working from home I mean. Started waking up at 7am, instead of 6 You find the time to exercise more Lounge in your shorts and socks No shirt, just your vest (in my case, #Sadrah) Come 5pm, put on your shirt and shoes (stay in your socks) and sit in the garden … It’s fine as long as you keep working, keep at it, stay busy! But now, now, now …. YAWNNNNNN …. (forgot what I was thinking!) Oh yes, I’VE TURNED LAZY! 🤔 Today, as I write these words, I realize that working from home is NOT AN OPTION. There is no such successful concept as “an office at home”. The novelty wears away. So does one’s creativity. #Office interaction. Office dynamics. Actually, now to think of it, it felt good going to office – sometimes even being first to open the doors – sticking to a ROUTINE. You then actually enjoy your weekends at home more.
