Hi, @alwayschasingrainbows. There's something I'm curious about. We know the moment when Anne realized she loved Gilbert. But we didn't see the moment when Gilbert realized he loved Anne. Have you ever thought about this? When and how do you think he noticed?
Hi! Thank you for your lovely question, dear @pinkenamelheart!
Of course, Gilbert told Anne "I’ve loved you ever since that day you broke your slate over my head in school.” But loving - and realizing that we love - are two entirely different things.
I think that Gilbert was charmed by Anne from the first moment he saw her. There was definitely something about her that caught his attention; perhaps it was her large, gray-green eyes that revealed her extraordinary character and intellect? He had certainly shown more interest in her than in the other girls, from the very beginning. Immediately after the unfortunate incident at school, during which he called Anne "Carrots", he tried to apologize to her and gain her sympathy. He gave her a candy heart, and later - an apple (both gifts were of course refused).
I think that over time this fascination turned into admiration as he saw how intelligent and persistent Anne was. He probably watched her from a distance, noticing how she blossomed and transformed from a child into a graceful and charming young girl. After Anne dyed her hair and had to cut it, he noticed that it had become darker. I think he realized how much he liked Anne when she again rejected his offers of friendship, when he rescued her from a sinking boat (or rather; from a slippery old pile).
Later, he was reciting a poem during a concert and when he got to the line: "There’s Another, not a sister,’ he looked straight at Anne. He was probably already aware of his infatuation.
I think Gilbert knew from the very beginning that Anne touched his heart in a way no one had ever touched before.
If I had to pinpoint a specific moment when Gilbert realized he had fallen in love with Anne, I would say it was when he first saw her in the brown glorria dress Matthew had given her. Anne outdid herself with her recitation talent and looked exceptionally charming.
After the show was over, Diana told Anne: "When you ran off the platform after the fairy dialogue one of your roses fell out of your hair. I saw Gil pick it up and put it in his breast pocket." It seems to me that this gesture clearly indicates that Gilbert fell head over heels in love with Anne.
Although I think he may have realized this earlier, and the process was gradual.
Thank you for your question! <3

How do the memories and magic of children disrupt and upRoot the histories we tell ourselves? How do children navigate spaces of oppression and liberation? How do they find joy and hope in places that were not created for them to exist? They live.

Bourbon Street Parade
They drove down to New Orleans looking to buy some hex bags from an old connection, but they were out of luck. A little girl, no older than eight years old, appeared in front of the door wearing green fairy wings, in her hand a magic wand with curly plastic ribbons coming out the end of it. She ran the ribbons through her fingers and looped them around and made a motion as if snipping them and craned her neck back and said Old Al was dead forever. Dad rubbed his eyes with the flat of his palm, his mouth down-turned, his jaw clenched. She stretched her arm out and pointed her wand towards the river. She said you better look for some other guy but watch out for all the phonies.
Thanks, Dean said, and held out his family-size bag of tootsie rolls. She shook her head. He wagged his eyebrows and rattled the bag like, you sure? This is the good stuff. Two for five at the gas station this morning but he was already down to a third of a bag and this made him feel very generous. Again she shook her head. He made a show of unwrapping a candy and throwing it into his mouth. She gave him a disgusted look and took off.
O-kay, he said. He scraped the taffy coating his teeth with a fingernail, struggled some to get out what was stuck between them while he thought carefully about touching Dad’s elbow or offering some other comfort. He swallowed, fake-chocolate taste thick at the back of his throat, and looked at his dad and Dad sighed and slapped his shoulder and said let’s go and started walking down Conti, leaving the car behind, always knowing what to do, walking fast like he did in huge strides that you had to jog a little to keep up with him for five, six blocks, past blow-up ghosts in front of homes covered in mesh cobwebs and kids inside them screaming, the street narrowing in, the sidewalks getting busier. Out of nowhere Dad crossed the street and there was a beep and Dean waved his hand at the guy behind the wheel and there were startled angry apologetic looks exchanged and Dean turned again looking for his father and caught sight of his turning left on Bourbon and called out after him and rounded the corner, his hand on his dead phone heavy and useless in his pocket, his eyes trained on Dad’s shoulders, so far behind him now and between them fat Batman in gray suit and hard plastic cowl, Michael Jackson who couldn’t moonwalk, Dolly Parton with foam tits and cowboy hat, chick waddling in mermaid tail, sexy nurse, squad of stormtroopers, preacher raging into a microphone, Ghostface, Black guy in a shoulder-length brown wig and beige-colored bathrobe, three little kids drumming on upside-down buckets, vampire with plastic fangs and red running down her chin and down her neck and her sternum artfully between her boobs, innumerable sweaty costumeless midwestern couples drinking liquor in plastic cups, murder victim with axe sticking out his head, scarecrow, Neo in leather duster, sorority girls in heels, fun-loving gay dudes, Pennywise and closely-related generic clown, a second and third Ghostface, beer sweetness in the air and gumbo and a big manly hand on his ass squeezing and Eagles cover band singing the full moon is calling the fever is high and the — corner of St. Ann where Dad turned right and disappeared into one of the courtyards or up into the rare green aurora flashing over the Mississippi a hundred yards away with its sewage smell, leaving Dean forever with his candy and choices to make like does he go back where he came from or does he walk miles up and down Decatur for the ghosts to watch and laugh from their balconies or does he ask for a phone to please call my dad and even worse than that the humiliation of asking where are you where should I meet you why would you leave like that should I go back to the car?
But then he heard the shouting. A large-sounding, murderous-sounding man was cursing insanely. His voice echoed and spilled out into the street. Dean pushed in a narrow metal gate that led into a poorly-lit path that led into a creole courtyard just as Dad turned the corner on his way out and said found you and just as Dad turned the corner Dean made some embarrassing girlish sound and threw himself back against the wall, gasping wildly, his heart rabbiting, hopped up on high-fructose corn syrup, threatening to bust out through his ribs. Pressed his hand to his chest to keep it in place. Whatever misery Dad saw on his face made him grin wide and sharp. Across from Dean he leaned against the wall. Only three feet between them now. But Dad tugged on his jacket, pulled him closer. Dean tripped over his feet, into Dad's chest, held on to Dad's arms for balance. Dad said, Here you go, laughing. He held a cloth pouch in his hand, tried to fit it in Dean’s right pocket but found it full of candy wrappers. He tsked as they fell soundlessly to the ground and said, gonna make yourself sick bud, slow and deep and pitying, teasing, hot in that eye-prickling way. He pulled Dean’s jacket open and left the pouch and its mysteries inside the inner pocket then his hand on Dean’s chest.
I was right behind you, Dean said, belly swirling with taffy and four whole months since he’d last had Dad’s hands on him.
I know, dude.
I found you.
I know, Dad said, huge careful hands cradling Dean’s skull. He said hey come here, and his hot open mouth was on Dean’s skin and his beard scratching and his teeth and he tilted Dean’s face up finally and then there was nothing for it. Dean closed his eyes.

Gothic Literature
As All Hallow’s Eve approaches with much anticipation of costumes, candies, and candles; we are reminded of strange tales that float from ear to ear as the sun sets earlier and the moon rises sooner. Some of the most popular works of literature created the genre of gothic literature, Stoker's Dracula, Shelly’s Frankenstein, and Walpole’s Castle of Otranto.
Tumblr media
Horace Walpole’s novel The Castle of Otranto: A Gothic Story, first published in 1764, is considered to be the first gothic work in literature. The mention of gothic literature brings up images of foggy moors, castle ruins, dark romances, and flocks of black birds. This is due to the major contributors of the gothic literary canon from the early Victorian period from both the United Kingdom and America; Charles Dickens, the Bronte sisters, Edgar Allen Poe, and Nathaniel Hawthorne. The gothic literary canon has continued to expand with the works of Bram Stoker, Robert Louis Stevenson, and Annie Rice. There is a modern gothic canon that houses authors such as Stephen King, Anne Rice, and Dame Daphne du Maruier. Beyond the illustrations of vampires, night sisters, and dangerous tinctures, what creates a gothic novel?
There are three main elements that are needed for a gothic novel: an environment of fear, supernatural events, and an intrusion of the past on the present. This differs from traditional fairy tales because the main theme is the present being haunted by the past or past event. The character’s environment contains physical reminders of the past by utilizing dark but picturesque scenery with melodramatic narratives. The central environment can be castle ruins, ancient houses, or encircling forests which all contain some terrible secret. An example of this is Poe’s short story “Fall of the House of Usher.” There are several earlier novels that set the foundation for early gothic literature that were published in the late 1700s. The featured novel The Castle of Otranto by Walpole in 1764; along with other works like Ann Radcliffe’s Mysteries of Udolpho, (1794), Matthew Lewis’s The Monk (1796), and Charles Brockden Brown’s American tale Wieland (1798). In the case of Walpole’s novel which is considered to be the first gothic novel, the subtitle “a Gothic story” was applied to the second edition.
This is likely due to the setting of the novel being in a haunted castle which is said to be inspired by a nightmare that Walpole had while sleeping in his own gothic revival style home, called Strawberry Hill House, in London. Horace Walople was taken with medieval history. The novel itself deals with a castle lord named Manfred and his family and opens with an ominous wedding. The sickly son of Manfred, Conrad is meant to be marrying princess Isabella but is crushed to death by a large helmet that falls from above him. This event is tied to an ancient prophecy:
“that the castle and lordship of Otranto should pass from the present family, whenever the real owner should be grown too large to inhabit it”
The story follows through a series of events that feels reminiscence of Shakespeare’s Hamlet, as Manfred attempts to leave his current wife for his son’s betrothed is fear that the prophecy means the end of his family’s line. The full prophecy comes to play out when Manfred mistakenly kills his daughter, Matilda, and a giant ghostly apparition appears to announce that the prophecy has been fulfilled after Matilda’s death and the former peasant Theodore is revealed to be the true prince of Otranto. Manfred repents for his actions and retires to religion alongside his wife, Hippolita.
While much of the story is dramatic, it was well received after its original publication. The portions being featured from the 1800’s edition of Walpole novel with the full title: The Castle of Otranto, A Story. Translated by William Marshal, Gent. From the Original Italian of Onuphrio Muralto, Canon of the Church of St. Nicholas at Otranto. The title was meant to give the reader’s the impression that the story was much older by seeming that it was found manuscript written in Naples in 1529, to better enforce this notion Walpole chose an archaic style of writing for the novel. The edition in the James Smith Noel Collection also has a frontispiece which is featured with this post.

The skies of Meridian were crisp and gentle as the clouds form and shape around the sun and it's blue eyes, the trees are a lovely shade of light green and yellows as it transitions of summer to fall slowly but beautifully, carts and it's people selling candy goods and swapping tales galore of adventures of the kingdom and it's people. A large beast of scales flies pass the clouds with a mighty scream of a high pitch echoing off it's back.
On the back of the dragon rests a young pre-teen of Catherina-Anne "Weira" Vandom-Escanor, her red hair to her shoulders sway and curl in the harsh winds are her thin fingers touch a nearby cloud as a smile appears on her adorably cute face as her chocolate brown eyes shimmer and shine. Down bellow in the beautiful white stone castle covered in plants, a pre-teen boy with dark hair and a child boy of messy strawberry blond locks hurry down the halls in hushed words and steady feet, both dressed in garbs of brown trousers over their white leggings and golden and sapphire color themed tunics and covers. Their quick game of run was quickly ended when a women with fair hair done in two thick braids tied in some knots of jewels like her special crowns dressed in a grown of purples and blues with peacock feathers creating a halo around her neck and waist, her blue eyes fluttering in shock at the boys.
"Egon, Hunter, what are you doing? The event is starting soon." Said she as she examine the boys, soon she glanced around. "And where on all the universe is your sister?"
As if on que, the bell of a fire breathing scaly beast scaled pass the castle court yard in a fierce thick shadow with a roar and a girl's insane cackling laughter of a howl. Egon, the eldest of the two boys, stared ahead not dare looking at the woman as his voice, meek yet able to hear, say, "That wasn't her."
In the courtyard the dragon lands in the large water pool of a fountain and Catherina-Anne quickly slid down it's arched down wings, Lilly pads of the water grow and rise before her feet touch them and guide her to the safe of wetness ground. The girl didn't make it pass four steps away from the scene before she was met with the woman from before suddenly there with a curious yet knowing look on her face. "A-Aunty Elyon-" Said she with a mere shy giggle and awkward smile.

Catherina-Anne scoffs and rubs the waist of her grown as she walks along side her brothers. Her red hair tucked back and groomed in two buns within a bosses, her ears dangling silver and a special stone on each end of the hood's end, her body covered with bare shoulders of her floor length and honestly a lovely pale peach and orange sunset color with the sleeves at start puffed put then slim tighten by ribbon above the elbows and tie two lose bows on her wrists each, the gown laced and bordered with golden trim and designs to match the golden thin necklace wrapped around her neck.
"Relax my little dragon, this is just for tonight." Said to her left, there standing her father dress in a handsome shade of purple and dark wine reds, his beard grown to his cheeks in a well groomed and trimmed style as his hair that matches the fairness of his sister's is long and braided severely with golden hoops and jewels embedded into it like a weaving art project. To his left stands his wife, his fair angel in human skin, dressed in a dark black gown with some blues shining like lightning through a dark midnight sky as her red hair is done back long in a high bun with a lovely silver and gold clashed crown caress her top much like Phobos' reverse style of color and design's. Over the years she aged well like a fine fine wine as Phobos and everyone in Meridian and beyond can admit proudly, her beauty never once wavering and boring three wonderful children didn't stop the process one bit.
The prince took the hand of his wife and kisses the top of her palm, causing the lady to smile bashfully as if they were still dating in their youths.

LIFE —
this city is haunted...
being raised by a single mother isn’t always easy. in fact, it was never easy until vera’s mother began to work her way through the upper class of new york city. it was her mother’s job, after all. a last-ditch effort to keep little vera off the streets that soon afforded them a lavish lifestyle to which vera quickly grew accustomed.
still, watching men fall at her mother’s feet for the right price reason wasn't a genuine fairytale. behind the glitz of the champagne fountains, lavish jewellery adorning her mother's neck, the opera, and ballet, there was nothing but darkness when vera was forced to sit alone in her room for hours while her mother did whatever with whomever. she was lonely even when she wasn't alone.
the more vera saw her mother change from a man-swindling businesswoman to a swooning, fawning piece of arm candy to men who didn't care for her at all, the more she began to resent their lifestyle altogether. she felt guilt, at first, her emotions bold and fiery and unrelenting even when she was young, but as the years passed, and mother drifted further and further, vera turned hard and icy. she locked her heart away and swore never to rely on anyone else. least of all, a man.
vera was seventeen when her mother died, of circumstances vera still isn't clear on, and the whole world threatened to crumble around her. nothing could console her. nothing could offer her solace from the aching, desperate grief. not even the embrace of the white crocodiles, whom her mother was an associate of. nothing. so, vera fled. she packed what possessions mattered, photographs, a delicate pearl ring that belonged to her mother, and left new york city for good... or so she thought.
the irony was glaringly obvious when she moved back to the city five years after she left. everything felt different, and everything felt exactly the same. every street was tainted with memories that flashed behind her eyes whenever she dared to close them.
now, over a decade later, vera has remained behind the walls she built of ice and stone but found a way to mask those walls with florals and beautiful imagery. she clawed her way to her position at Stoneage Industries and cared little for the people she stepped on along the way. it's not that vera is heartless, though some (including she) may claim she is. she is like this because she has to be for survival. for vera knows what disappointment, loss, and pain feel like. she knows loneliness so well she swears it's etched into her bones. perhaps that is why vera feels so at home amongst the chaos, sitting on top of a pile of money brought in by robots and replicants. she envies their ability to feel nothing.
"mom, i am a rich man."
EXTRAS —
those she works with, and those who work for her, likely see her as professional and stoic. when she's at work, she is buried in it. CFO at Stoneage Industries is the perfect distraction from anything and everything else.
she likes to get what she wants and isn't afraid to go after it by any means necessary. scheming? she's a fan. when her plan doesn't succeed, and she's left without a prize, she can be found in her bathtub with a glass of scotch in one hand and a cigarette in the other.
despite her insistence to never rely on a man, she will use them and can be found doing so after hours when she's looking to blow off some steam.
aside from the ring, the only connection she still has to her mother is her association with the white crocodiles.
although she can be difficult to please and impossible to argue with, vera is also a little rascally. she likes a little mischief. in fact, sometimes she pushes people's buttons just for fun. she will swindle you out of twenty bucks she doesn't even need with a smile on her face.
there is (almost) nothing vera loves more than being underestimated. it gives her an upper hand she is more than willing to take.
there is a softness to her reserved for intimate moments that truly matter to her.
CONNECTIONS —
coming soon...
