Edvard Munch
Self Portrait (Selvportrett), c. 1895
Lithographic crayon, tusche, and scraper, inscribed
Although Munch was just thirty-one years old when he created this self-portrait, he represented himself as a spectral figure, with bones at the bottom of the picture serving as a memento mori, or reminder of death. They are balanced by the artist's name and the date at the top of the image; together these details turn it into a kind of tombstone, or sepulchral tablet.
Munch later stated, 'Sickness, insanity, and death were the dark angels standing guard at my cradle and they have followed me throughout my life.' The darkness of the background allows the bones to appear to be those of the subject's arm, leaning on the picture's frame. The severed, floating head was a familiar motif in art around the turn of the twentieth century, signifying a split between the physical and spiritual worlds. x

i was thinking about doing a load of designs of fashion across the planes because i feel like i haven't done any costume designs that aren't for cosplay in a while and exploring how fashion differs across such a vast continent would be fun, but I immediately got distracted thinking about the hypothetical textile industries within the planes, which led me to thinking about Sariel in a handmade gold lace dress with symbols representing the Mother and Father, the Mindaris family, and the Eldrin empire and what an incredible show of wealth, power, and style that would be.

Le Grand Atelier (1851)
Oil on wood, 88 x 104 cm
Musée de la Vie romantique, Paris
Highlights from around the web 💫
✨ Arie Johannes Lamme (also spelled Ary) was a Dutch painter, etcher, lithographer, art dealer and museum director. He specialized in genre scenes and historical works. [1]
✨ His father was the art dealer Arnoldus Lamme. Lamme originally studied with his father, then went to Paris at the age of seventeen, where he studied with his cousins, Ary and Hendrik Scheffer. [2]
✨ Also known as “The Big Studio” or “Ary Scheffer's workshop, rue Chaptal” this painting depicts an interior view of Ary Scheffer's studio, presenting him at the centre of the composition painting Divine Love and Earthly Love. On the left under the large glass roof, the ancient plasterwork serves as a model. In the background, the cast of the recumbent statue of his mother, Cornélia Lamme, can be seen. [3]
