Rating: Pairing: Mountain & Cumulus & Dew Word Count: 743 Mountain and Cumulus make Dew's favorite cake for his summoning day. Mushy May brought to you by @forlorn-crows Divider by @ghuleh-recs
Tumblr media
Mountain doesn’t consider himself much of a baker. He isn’t Cumulus who can whip up scones, and cookies, and marvelous cakes in an afternoon. He isn’t Dew who has an overall knowledge of all things kitchen that seems to be endless. But, he knows how to follow a recipe. And he knows how to make one thing perfectly.
Dew’s summoning day cake.
If it was up to Dew–no one would make him anything. They’d have dinner together–that Dew cooked, and play games on the ancient N64 system, or watch a campy horror movie. There would be no cake, no gifts, no fuss.
It’s not because Dew doesn’t like cake and gifts and fuss–it’s because he doesn’t think he deserves them–sees them as superfluous.
Mountain won’t stand for it.
Cumulus is with him, of course. Mountain feels better with her around when he’s baking. Like even if she just stood somewhere in the room and didn’t help it would come out better. She’s standing next to him, creaming butter and sugar while Mountain steeps strong earl gray tea to infuse into the batter.
Cumulus measures out honey and adds it to her mixture of wet ingredients. Eggs are next. The kitchen already smells divine and they haven’t even put it in the oven yet.
“He’s going to complain,” Mountain says, apprehensive.
“He always complains. He doesn’t like when people do things for him.”
“I just wonder if maybe we should listen to him for once.” Mountain strains the tea into Cumulus’ mixture and she sighs. Humming softly as the herbal smell hits her. She adds a dash of lavender–her secret ingredient.
“What and do nothing?”
Mountain shakes his head. “Less, maybe. I mean I don’t like when people go all out for me–it feels–I don’t like to be seen like that.”
“But that’s you, Mount,” Cumulus says softly, watching Mountain sift dry ingredients together. “Dew’s different. And we’re already making the cake.”
“I don’t mean the cake. Of course we have to make the cake. I mean the gifts, the fawning over him. Maybe we could just watch a bad movie and–”
“Are you really going to be able to watch him make us all dinner on his summoning day and not help at all?”
Mountain shakes his head. “No.”
“What did you get him?”
“Besides the cake?”
Cumulus laughs, she nudges Mountain with her hip. “What? Are you keeping it from me too?”
Mountain blushes a little. “He found this rock when we were on tour, it’s not even anything special but it’s pretty. I…I might have stolen it from him and made it into a necklace.”
Cumulus laughs, bright and airy. She takes the bowl of dry ingredients from Mountain and starts to add them little by little to the wet. “And you say you don’t want to fawn over him.”
Mountain flushes, he can’t help it. “He deserves it.”
Cumulus nods in agreement as she mixes the batter. Mountain watches it come together–he dips his finger in, unable to resist the herbal sweetness of it. The lingering flavor of honey and bergamot burst on his tongue. He goes for another taste and Cumulus bats his hand away.  “Save some for, Droplet.”
“Droplet will get plenty,” Mountain says, leaning over and kissing her on the temple, sneaking his finger into the batter as he does.
“Enough!” She hip checks him, and curls her arm protectively over the bowl. “Go make the caramel or the frosting or something. You know Swiss can only keep him busy for so long.”
Mountain smiles warmly at her, turning to dump the softened butter into the stand mixer. “Yes, ma’am.”
When Dew and Swiss appear–an hour and a half later, the cake is done. Sitting tall and proud on the table in the middle of the kitchenette. Perfectly iced, caramel glaze dripping decadently down the sides.
Dew’s smile lights up his face, his eyes dart over to Mountain and Cumulus a pink blush rising to his cheeks. “You didn’t have to.”
“You alway say that–and yet, we always do.” Cumulus crosse the room to pull Dew into a hug, to kiss him gently on the forehead.
“Thank you,” he whispers.
Mountain answers Dew’s smile with one of his own. This–he remembers–is why they do this. Just for these small moments when Dew allows himself to be loved and doted on without complaint or embarrassment. For the moment when he sees his favorite cake, waiting, just for him.

Junior Spymaster
Azriel Week Day One: spymaster
Fluff. 1.2k words.
Tumblr media
Azriel fought the smile that was threatening to curl his lips as he lay in bed, perfectly still, feigning sleep. The footsteps shuffling across the floorboards of his bedroom were short, hurried, a little too excited. The soft drag of fabric across the hardwood followed the footsteps like a shadow, and from the dim light he could sense shining behind his closed eyelids, he could tell that it was still early dawn.
Very early. The sun was most likely only just peeking over the horizon.
The footsteps halted at his bedside, and a stifled giggle was promptly muffled by a blanket that was surely being pressed across the bedroom creeper’s lips. Azriel braced his abdominals for what he knew was to come, just as he knew his daughters’ knees were bending, readying herself to push off the ground as she fluttered her little wings and landed feet first on his stomach, her bottom following soon after.
Umph! He heard the little puff of her breath leave her as she landed on his stomach, shuffling to straddle his torso. She was still working on her crash landings, or rather, learning how to try to avoid them.
“Wake up daddy! I got you!” Rune squealed, her little fingers poked at his face, giggling as she did so. The sound of her tinkling laughter filled his heart with unbridled joy. He never thought he’d be the reason for a youngling’s happiness.
Azriel made a display of acting surprised, exclaiming theatrically “Rue! You got me good today, baby.”
Rune giggled and wrapped her little arms around his neck, stretching herself over her father’s chest, pulling her blanket up with her. A broad hand came up to rest on her back, stroking her long, unruly mane. So much like his own but softer, finer in the delicate way only a child’s hair can be. He breathed in her honey and morning dew scent.
“I’m a good sneaker, you know.”
Azriel smiled down at his four-year-old. Her little feet were planted either side of his waist as she rested her chin on a fist, her elbows digging into his chest.
Azriel arched an eyebrow, regarding his daughter. “A sneaker? Or a spy?”
“Oh, a spy!” she corrected.  “I’m gonna be Spymaster for Nyxie when we’re all grown up. Just like you and Uncle Rhysie.”
Azriel chuckled, “Oh really?”
She nodded matter of factly. “Ahuh! I’m good at finding secrets.”
He snorted, knowing very well how much of a snoop Rune was. He barely had a spare second with her mother alone.
“I know you are. But you see, what you also must understand is that you have to be good at keeping secrets, too.”
Azriel gave her a smirk as he bopped her on the nose pointedly. It was only just last week that Rune had announced to his brothers at family dinner that mama and daddy were doing yoga in bed again when Rhys had been ribbing Azriel about missing morning training sessions for three consecutive days. Cassian had looked like he was about to combust from laughter.
“I can keep ‘em!” Her bright eyes gazed back into his, the perfect portrait of righteous indignation painted across her features. She looked so much like him, big hazel eyes, raven black hair and golden-brown skin, thankfully still smooth and mostly unblemished. The only thing marring her perfect skin were the regular knicks and grazes a happy child would encounter. But her temperament, her way with people and her kindness, that was all her mother.
“Oh really? Didn’t you tell me just yesterday at bedtime that Benedict has been sneaking mama’s cookies from the kitchen?”
Rune blushed, fiddling with her blanket between her hands, her mind working to form a rebuttal to her father’s accusation.
“Yeah but… I’m just being a good spy for you daddy! You still the master now, so I tell you all the secrets. But when I’m the master, you gotta tell me when Beny steals the cookies!”
“Well in that case I guess you were just being a loyal subject then, is that right? It had nothing to do with tattling on your brother.”
“Yep! Mama said that the master is nothing without the network, daddy.” She waved her arms about as she spoke and that combined with the stern look on her little face had Azriel grimacing to contain his amusement.
“That’s very true, Rue. Mama is very smart; the Master is nothing without his network. That is why you have to all work together to protect the ones you love and the ones that trust you to protect them.”
Rune nodded solemnly; glimpses of such wisdom shown beyond her years already.
“Is that why you’re Spymaster daddy? So you can protect mama and Beny and me?”
Azriel smiled at his daughter. A whisper of sadness at the edge of his mind as he thought about the solitary reason he had been employed as Spymaster by Rhys’ cruel father centuries ago.
Shadowsinger.
So rare, so coveted.
It was no secret that his shadows could infiltrate almost any court, any kingdom. The edge his affinity over the shadows provided him, and therefore the court that he served.
Rune had always been fascinated with his vein of work. Enamoured with everything investigative and the gathering of intelligence. He wouldn’t tell his daughter today the full scope of what being Spymaster meant. He wouldn’t tell her that the pools of their enemies’ blood stained into the skin of his hands are never fully washed away. He wouldn’t expose her yet to the methods employed to gain access to vital information required to protect his family, his court and its citizens. He wouldn’t yet share with her the mental and physical lengths it takes to reel yourself back from the pit of wickedness you slip into in order to protect the fragile walls of your mind, so you do not lose yourself to the infinite realm of darkness and despair as you spiral.
No, he wouldn’t share all that with her today.
How the feared Spymaster and Shadowsinger of the Night Court had found himself with the most beautiful female he had ever known remained a mystery even to himself. Of all his proficiency in uncovering the truth, he still had no idea how a female as kind and warm as her loved his jagged and twisted soul so fiercely. And to bestow him with two children that not only loved and worshipped him, seeing not fearsome warrior, but just saw…daddy. Saw their protector, their play mate, their teacher and friend.
“That’s right baby, I do it all to protect you and mama and Beny. And before I had all of you in my life I did it all for Uncle Rhys and Uncle Cass.”
He wrapped a large hand around her head, threading his fingers gently in her soft hair and pulled her back onto his chest, pressing a kiss atop her head as she snuggled into his embrace. A small fist came to rub at her nose, her other hand still clutching her blanket.
“Mama is making pancakes,” she murmured into his chest, seemingly done with their previous conversation.
Azriel laughed. The attention spans of four-year-olds never failed to entertain him. This kid may have had his eyes and fierce loyalty, but she had Cassian’s appetite.
Rising swiftly out of bed, still clutching Rune in his arms, he exclaimed, “Well then, let’s go get pancakes!”

I'm weird and bored so. What do the Hashira smell like?
Giyuu Tomioka
So I think Giyuu would always smell like mint and chlorine. I did get that from somebody else and I think it fits him. I don't know why. He probably never even uses breath mints, he probably uses those mint squares. The weird paper things.
Shinobu Kocho
Dove. Just straight up smells like a dove soap bar. She just gives off that fresh scent of a freshly cleaned bathroom. Either that or morning dew. Probably because the morning dew from the grass seeps into her shoes way to often...
Gyomei Himejima
Wet rocks. Just straight river stone. He gives off the smell of nature. Like sniff him and you can smell a Bob Ross painting. It's oddly soothing... Like skipping stones..
Sanemi Shinazugawa
Sapwood. A fresh fruit smell. Something tropical and soothing. like fruit punch. Something fresh that makes you want to go on summer vacation when it's the middle of the winter. It most likely comes from his hair. He doesn't wash his hair with shampoo and instead makes his own conditioner ( probably like how Inosuke does ) He most likely mashes up some bananas and mixes it with honey and milk. His hair gets frizzy and dry easily so this treats it really well. Mmmm. Bananas.
Tengen Uzui
Citrus. Like lemon. His smell probably stings. He most likely uses lemon juice to fight wrinkles and signs of ageing. He then dulls it down with something more water based. Probably including coconut to help keep his skin moisturized. At this point he smells like a salon.. (It tingles the other Hashira's nose hairs..)
Obanai Iguro
He probably smells like cloth or laundry detergent and cologne. The cloth nd laundry detergent come from his clothes since his haori is much bigger then he actually is. And the Cologne. I bet he just wears it or something like it so he can mask the fact that he has a snake crawling on him all the time and that never leaves his shoulder. Kabumaru probably shed on him before.. or worse...
Mitsuri Kanroji
Sweet honey. She smells like sugar, like a bakery. Fresh bread and berries, a calming and nice scent. Cookies and milk. She just smells like food. Like those cinnamon shampoos people use. Her scent probably changes season to season since she would most likely make her products seasonal. (The candy cane scent is Obanai's favorite)
Rengoku Kyojuro
He smells like cats. Like the great outdoors. He gives off a man musk that isn't to strong but is easily noticeable as well. His hands always smell like pennies though. An iron smell. He also gives off the smell of a side walk. I don't know what that is meant to smell like but he just does.
Muichiro Tokito
Grass. He smells like grass. That's it. Just straight grass.
-----------------
Yeah that's how I think they would smell.....

“okay…” steve trailed off while his eyes scattered around the selection of cereals. you were home with the twins so he had robin join him on his shopping trip. “jamie likes the barbie cereal and jack likes cookie crisp.”
robin stepped forward to grab the cookie crisp for the boy while steve’s hand found the pink box with a barbie on it for his daughter. a few seconds later, his eyes glanced over to the yellow box of honey combs before he picked it up.
“i should probably go ahead and get this for eddie, right?”
robin nodded with a chuckle. “is he ever at his own house?”
“sometimes,” steve shared but he didn’t mind eddie’s presence all that much. surprisingly, eddie was pretty good with the kids and you loved having him around. eddie just didn’t like being alone. he thrived in chaos with people and at a house with two adults, two toddlers, and a baby on the way, there were a lot of people and a lot of chaos. “i should probably get some green coke for him too.”
“some what?” robin inquired with a grin.
“green coke,” steve said matter-of-factly, looking at robin with furrowed brows as if she had no reason to be confused. then he realized that robin had no idea what he was talking about. “mountain dew. the twins have been calling it green coke lately. all soda is coke to them, just different colors.”
“okayyy,” she dragged out, teasing steve while walking ahead of him a bit in the aisle.
“what?” he inquired, “come on, it’s not that weird.”

It isn’t often Dean gets to enjoy the quiet, so for now he relishes it. Feeling a warm spring breeze gracing the back of his neck and watching the cherry blossom petals dancing lazily to the sun drenched grass, which is still slick and glistening with morning dew – emerald green against the first hints of blue in the flowers that are just beginning to consider making their debut appearance for the year.
He looks up from the book he’s been pouring over – some old mushy romance novel he picked up from a yard sale a few towns back. He told Sam it was a sort of action thing; he told Cas the truth.
He lifts his face to the sun and lets the light just linger there, kissing each and every freckle as it warms him right to his core.
The Angel shifts beside him and a soft smile touches his lips. Slowly, he turns to face Cas, who is staring intently at the daisy between his index finger and thumb. Dean’s smile deepens as the warmth returns to his heart, this time without any involvement from the sun.
He fidgets, his arm brushing against Cas’, which seems to break whatever spell the daisy has on Cas, who looks at Dean with those soft blue eyes. At first he seems startled, as though he’d been as far from reality as anyone could be, but gazing into those green eyes that seem to have picked up some of the sun’s golden hues, he softens and grins.
‘Whatcha thinkin’ about, sunshine?’ Dean murmurs through his smile, all deep and honey-toned. Cas looks down at the flower in his fingers and then holds it up in front of Dean.
‘Just about the intricacy of this flower. Look at how perfect it is –‘ he passes the daisy to Dean, who holds it close to his face and considers it. ‘You see how the petals overlap? How the middle is such a bright yellow but none of the pollen stains the petals. And the very edges of the petals are pink – I just find them fascinating.’ He looks up at Dean, then, and almost forgets about the daisy as he takes in the soft way Dean considers the flower, the way the sunlight picks out each eyelash and the soft curve of Dean’s lips. Then Dean looks up at him and they share one of those smiles that makes Sam roll his eyes when he catches them.
Dean leans over and kisses Cas’ cheek before resting his head on the angel’s shoulder. He sighs deeply when Cas leans into him, inhaling the light scent of rose shampoo he’s always loved in Dean’s hair, before kissing the top of his head and relaxing into their usual relaxing-on-the-hood-of-the-car posture, which he’s sure he’d be happy to stay in forever, should the need arise.
In the back seat of the Impala, Sam looks up from the recipe book he picked up at that same yard sale (the cookies don’t sound too healthy, but they do sound good) to see why the sunlight was suddenly extinguished. He grins to himself, seeing his brother nestled into the Angel’s neck, Cas’ arm around Dean’s shoulder and their quiet mumbling carried into the car by the breeze.
‘Would you too get a room?’ He chides, holding back his laughter.
‘Shut it, bitch’ is all he gets back, but he can hear Cas’ affectionate eye roll and the smile in Dean’s voice.
Dean lifts his head from the Angel’s shoulder and rests his hand on top of Cas’, allowing their fingers to interlock a little and enjoying the way the sunlight glints off of the ring on the third finger on his left hand. ‘We should head off if we wanna make it for lunch – next town’s a couple hours away.’
Cas stands and pulls Dean with him, luring him into a tender kiss. Still smiling, he lets Dean go and walks back to the passenger door. Dean takes a moment to open his book, where he places the daisy that Cas gave him, taking one last wistful look at it before closing the pages and giving the book a gentle squeeze, hoping it would dry out nicely, just like all the others.

for @madamdiaval it took me a while to form my thoughts and yet I feel that this text came out incoherent. but I want to publish it.
Excellent. *puts a tray with hot tea, cookies and a box of handkerchiefs next to it. *Make yourself comfortable, honey.
Whatever I say next, you can not take seriously and not be 100% reliable
Just…..I really understand Malleus' feelings.
Using the term "full of unused love" - because he has not received "love" since birth (several of its forms in the form of a parent's love for the family factor, platonic in friendship) and it languishes in him until now.
Therefore, he will perceive so painfully that two people who have shown him unfamiliar feelings and sensations may disappear from his life. These feelings are pleasant for him, they are new and unexplored. But like a desiccated earth, he craves at least a couple of drops of this dew in the form of love in any form. Just as he longs to give it away.
As far as we know, the current ruling queen Malefecia, the grandmother of Malleus, is a very busy person. And due to circumstances in childhood, there was no "clear" model of behavior in the form of a parent for the little prince. The absence of such an important part for the formation of a personality for a child, especially a small one, is a very important factor. Yes, maybe she loves her grandson very much and protects him along with her vassals or the ruling elite (sorry, I'm not strong in public administration), It is quite possible to manic, but this may be little confirmed yet due to lack of information.
The really important moment for the little Malleus is apparently just…..there was no.
There were no moments that strengthen attachment and contribute to some kind of "exchange" and accumulation of social experience and role model behavior.
Often meals are held alone, birthday (a very important day for any child!) this is a national holiday.Because of which he is loaded with royal duties throughout the day. In the end, time after time getting a big cake that simply has no one to share.
Therefore, Lilia in this aspect can be projected as a kind of parent for Malleus. Although most of the fandom also thinks that Lilia literally replaced his family. Which I agree with.
I may be wrong, but Lilia was not the one who screams at a child for mistakes or misdemeanors. Maybe not in his nature. Yes, he is A VERY STRICT educator. For human experience, even extreme.
Vanrouge definitely passed on a lot of his own experience to teach Draconia. Playing stringed instruments is an example of that. The exchange of experience, education and upbringing for a child is an integral part. It can also be compared to some form of caring if you want.
This is also a very important part for Malleus, because Vanrouge was the one who bestowed care more than anyone in the castle. Also gifts and probably letters from Lilia's travels, all this can be a treasure for someone who is "locked up against his will" A grain of fresh air that he craves so much at times.
The loss of the Lilia's parent figure for Malleus may be much deeper than it seems. (Sorry if it sounds like I'm already holding a Vanrouge funeral in advance)
The loss of a parental figure, especially one that was very close to the heart and gave a large emotional and sensual spectrum. It can be extremely painful. This can be displayed as a return to the period of loneliness in childhood. And it may also be a reflection that his childhood and adolescence when Malleus could feel the support in the form of experience of life, mind and all the qualities of Lilia…
and…this
….will disappear.
Subconsciously, it is quite possible that Malleus by all means does not want to return to the most difficult period for him. Go back to your past. Frightening to everyone, lonely and locked in his own cage castle.
Because then it makes sense for him to see the frightening future of the lonely king. With an unknown ever-presenting opportunity to have at least some grains of new experience through communication or a friend in principle.
Have you noticed that Malleus is sometimes just a little bit late? in some situations. As if his reaction is slow or does not keep up on time. This can be referred to as his distortion of the perception of time. BUT with isolation and prolonged loneliness, a distortion of the perception of time begins to form This is often present in office workers who do not have windows or any available indicators about finding the sun. If we recall that Malleus was literally "locked" in his own castle. And add to this social isolation and loneliness….then this may well explain everything.
And now
This is a completely new experience for Malleus.
For him, the familiar model of behavior in relation to him is very stable. Respect and exaltation of him practically into a kind of cult. - in the actions of Sebek, this is very well shown. Respect for both the stronger and the duty to preserve his life in order to further fulfill the duties of the crown. In this regard, Silver also wears the "grown up together" model under the gaze of one parent - Lilia. Therefore, these two secretly take care of each other, as if the neighbor's child grew up with you and you communicate quite closely.
Patterns of behavior of a parent- child in relation to Lilia and grandmother.
Students ….please forgive me with this model it is a little difficult for me in the description. Because in the direction of Malleus, each of the same leaders of the dormitories has it in one way or another.
Otherwise, all students mostly avoid Malleus as cholera. Excuse the expression.
But Yuu's behavior pattern was completely unknown to Malleus.
And he was hooked on it. It was as if it clicked in his head that this was a normal reaction that he lacked.
This communication and interaction was like a breath of fresh air for which Draconia is hungry. TERRIBLY HUNGRY. But he is too well-mannered and very cautious, curious to lose this chance.
You may notice that Draconia throughout the storyline does not rush the events of communication. A couple of phrases here, a couple of conversations here and there. So far, this is a new territory for Tsunotaro and he is trying to hide this blessed new and unknown for him. From the husk of the usual reaction to which he has already become accustomed and encountered an infinite number of times.
Therefore, Tsunotaro feels more relaxed (letting go of all the phrases because of which Simps like me squeak like seagulls.) Feeling "normal" and finally getting that communication and action that he craved so much as a child.
Communication and spending time with peers (well, almost, given his longevity) Getting nicknames, invitations to be together. Or small hidden moments when you can "accidentally" bump into each other in one place and even briefly chat.
The very routine that is sorely lacking in the life of Draconia.
So if you do a little reflection. Lilia is a seed bond, parental love. Yuu is a friendly bond, platonic or romantic. The devil knows, because of his behavior, you can consider it under different meanings.
but.
Malleus Draconia is full of unused love.
Gentle, soft, sensitive, protecting what he will protect with such trepidation. Deliberate, and not intrusive. Careful in the case of Yuu. Unhurried and unhurried, in order to feel and live all the moments and all the emotions and feelings at the pace at which they are both comfortable and comfortable.
If you compare Yuu with the Trio - Adeuce and Grimm, their relationship developed very rapidly. Both events and their actions played an important part.
And with Tsunotaro, it's a leisurely walk, completely random. From time to time filled with trivial conversations about what happened. Without obliging or forcing anything.
At the same time!!It should be borne in mind that Malleus feels so comfortable and trusts Yuu that he tells any personal stories. Or the little things that are important to him.
He gives Yuu information so charmingly, watching their reaction. Is it possible to give more, what will be interesting for this topic and what should definitely be mentioned. Building a fragile house of cards, which subsequently acquires a strong foundation and walls that are not so easy to demolish. Which will fill the hole in his heart, and calm his storm in his thoughts.

Deck the Halls (Rain x Reader)
Summary: It's wintertime at the Ministry. Snow is falling, cookies are being baked, and community service time has arrived. All ghouls must participate in community service, which this time of year means creating decorations to bring holiday cheer to siblings, ghouls, and Papas.
One particular ghoul has had his eye on you for a while. Everyone seems to know except you. Will he be able to keep it under wraps while crafting?
Pairing: Rain x GN!Reader
Rating: T for Language
Warnings: Some self-deprecating talk.
AO3 Link
Dew threw the mess of popsicle sticks and glue at the wall.
"Dewdrop you will go clean that mess up right now!" You tried putting as much bass in your voice as possible. Your fists connected with your hips as you stared down the ghoul, his tail swatting back and forth like a cantankerous cat.
"Stupid fucking shit!" he yelled. "Why the fuck do we have to make decorations for the Ministry? I've got better shit to do like practicing. We're going to Europe soon and I need to be ready."
The trick worked, even if Dew did flip you off on his way over to the gooey mess. The room resumed its relative quiet of ghouls scribbling crayons and markers on poster boards, scissors snipping into coffee filters, and the rustling of Perler beads to be arranged for ironing. The quelling of the outburst seemed to have quashed any sort of rebellion, but you wanted to be sure.
"Just so everyone knows all Ghouls must participate in community service. Being part of the touring division of the Ghost project does not exempt you from this."
"I don't care about the community service bit," Dew snipped. "I just don't like making decorations."
"Hey, Dew!" Aether called out. "I made a decoration just for you!" He hoisted up a poster board with a crude drawing of ghoul genitalia, complete with spiral ribbing and thorny balls.
"Aether, while I appreciate the enthusiasm, let's try to keep our decorations Yule themed," you warned him with a sideways look.
"Can I get some help?" Rain said, tugging on your sleeve. He looked up, lips pressed together, waiting for you to assess his art project.
"Sure, friend! What's up?" You plopped down next to him to see a mess of glitter, glue sticks, and a torn-up asymmetrical coffee filter.
"I want to make the snowflake look like it's sparkling, but the glue stick keeps ripping through the snowflake." His shoulders heaved with a sigh. Pushing the mangled snowflake into the center of the table, he laid his head down in folded arms.
"Hey now, there's no need to get so sad." You rubbed his upper back in reassurance. The ghoul perked up almost immediately. "We can make the snowflake just like you wanted to."
"Really? Can you, um, show me how?"
There was a soft patting sound coming from behind you. Turning to grab some coffee filters from the art supply cart behind you, you saw Rain's spade happily thumping on the wooden floor.
You gave one of the fresh coffee filters to him, keeping the other for yourself.
"So first you have to fold the filter into eighths," you said, demonstrating for the ghoul. Each time you made a new fold, you made sure to go back, making each crease as sharp as possible.
Rain sat there hands in his lap, even after you got done folding. "Do you think you could maybe fold mine for me?" he asked sheepishly. "My claws kept tearing the paper the first time I tried it."
"Of course, honey!" You gave him another rub between his shoulder blades, the thumping behind you resuming again, this time slightly louder than before. You quickly creased his filter, handing it back to him.
"Thanks," he smiled. He held the folded paper with his open palms, trying to avoid his claws.
"Next, we need to cut some shapes into the sides."
You both reached for the sole pair of scissors in the middle of the table. Hand brushing yours, Rain jerked his back as if he'd touched a branding iron.
"Go ahead and take them. I'll just use my claws."
Kissy noises coming from one of the other tables distracted you as you reached for the scissors. You half stood as you tried to see if you'd have to break up a fight between Dew and Aether. The noises stopped as soon as you stood.
"Weird," you said, sitting back down.
"Yeah," Rain laughed nervously, "totally weird." He went back to slicing ear shapes and triangles into his coffee filter, head bent forward casting a shadow on the craft.
You cut a few shapes into yours, waiting for Rain to finish with his. He cut one last half star, before turning back to you, the smile on his face notable. The ghoul rarely smiled, or so you thought. No one was really sure what Rain was truly like as he spent most of his time silently meditating in the grotto beneath the Ministry.
Smiling back, you were glad that he seemed to be enjoying your arts and crafts hour. You hoped that he would be proud of his work of art when you were both finished.
"Now unfold the snowflake. It should look something like this," you said, showing off your handiwork to Rain.
Rain followed suit, carefully sliding his claw between the thin layers to separate and unfold them. He flexed his hands, palming flat the delicate paper work. It was beautiful, almost entirely covered in a flurry of hearts, definitely putting to shame his first attempt.
"Rain I love it! It looks gorgeous!" you gushed, reaching behind you to grab two pieces of construction paper, a container of Mod Podge, and some paintbrushes.
"I love you too. I mean! I love yours too!" his tail curled under the bench and the thwacking began anew, this time arrhythmically. More kissy sounds from the next table caused you to quirk a brow in that direction. The sounds stopped again, and you hoped this wasn't some newfound fad you'd be explaining to Sister Imperator later. You turned your attention back to Rain.
"Thank you, Rain. It's nothing much but I tried."
You slid the construction paper under your snowflakes and cracked open the container of Mod Podge. The scent that wafted from it was pungent but necessary to achieve the final step.
"Next we're going to brush on some of this. Since Mod Podge is liquid, it won't tear up the snowflake like the glue stick did. Here, have a brush!" Handing him a paintbrush, you dipped yours into the liquid and started spreading it quickly down the twists and turns of your snowflake.
"You're really good at crafts," Rain said, carefully painting the Mod Podge onto his snowflake. "How did you get so good?"
"Well, I guess the same way you got better at playing bass: with lots of practice."
"Yeah, but every time I try to do art I mess it up"
"The first few times we try anything we're bound to make mistakes. You just have to pick yourself up, dust yourself off, and try again. Trying something new can be a bit nerve-wracking, but it's always worth it to give it a shot."
"Yeah I guess so," he laughed. With one last stroke, Rain's snowflake was now ready for glitter.
"Next part we can be as messy as we want. Sprinkle the glitter all over the snowflake. Don't worry about trying to get it directly on it: that's what the construction paper is for. Any leftover glitter we can just fold the paper and slide it right back into the container."
"That's really smart!" Rain smiled. He grabbed the container of white glitter from his first attempt and started shaking it onto his new masterpiece.
"Well, you know what they say: 'work smarter, not harder'," you said, dumping a canister of rainbow glitter you found on the table.
You'd almost finished up when Swiss came up behind you both. "Hey, that looks really good Rain! Are you going to give it to them?"
"To who? To me?" you said, looking up, hand to your chest. You couldn't imagine why Swiss thought he'd have to give it to you since all ghouls were responsible for hanging up their own decorations.
"Yeah, Rainy here has a crush on you. It looks like a ghoul courting present."
"Swiss! What the Hell!?" Rain smooshed a hand over his snowflake, trying to cover up the increasingly suspicious art project.
"C'mon Rain! You've been thumping your tail so loudly that everyone in the room can hear it. Don't be ashamed of wanting to get your freak on."
Rain got up and bolted for the door, snowflake sticking to his hand. He tried shaking it off but to no avail. Throwing open the door, he didn't bother shutting it, instead continuing to run.
You looked up at Swiss.
"Man needed a push," he shrugged.
"As soon as I find Rain, you're apologizing to him," you said, pointing at him to get your point across.
He pushed the finger out of the way with the back of his hand. "Your authority ends at the art room door, sugar, and community service hour is almost up. I suggest you go find him before he drowns in the grotto. I'm sure Imperator would love to hear how you fucked that one up."
"Aether!" you called past Swiss.
"Yeah?" he called back.
"You're in charge until I get back. Make sure there's no funny business, okay?"
"You got it boss!" he said, making a mock salute. "Here that Dewey baby? I'm in charge now."
You left quickly. The less you saw of the consequences of your actions the better.
Running through the halls, you looked left and right for the grotto entrance. The area was unfamiliar, surrounded by ghoul dormitories and the apothecary alcove. You shut your eyes, looking back and forth trying to drudge up the memory of what the sibling of sin had told you at orientation.
"Over here are the ghoul dormitories and apothecary. You are allowed to visit the apothecary for maladies, but the ghoul dormitories are strictly off-limits. If you go down the hallway and to the right, you will find the entrance to the grotto. If you are caught down there you will find yourself a one-way ticket back to whatever sad city you came from. I'm telling you where it is so we don't have any 'accidents'," they had droned, jaded from past repetitions.
You took a deep breath and crossed the invisible forbidden barrier. Your heart beat faster, and your legs moved quicker, looking around for any potential snitches.
The entrance to the grotto was covered in a mosaic depiction of Hell. As you continued winding your way down the spiraling stairs, the red and orange tiles morphed to yellow, and at last to greens and blues of cool lagoons and stormy waves of the sea. The tiles continued into the grotto, forming a kind of peaceful sanctuary that washed tranquility over you like the ebb and flow of the tide.
Rain knelt at the edge of the water, staring at the snowflake stuck to his hand.
"It was supposed to be perfect and now I've fucked it all up," he sighed, voice echoing through the grotto. "Satan, Rain! Why do you have to be such a stupid idiot?! Stupid, stupid, stupid!"
"Please don't talk to yourself like that," you said, coming up behind him to rest a hand on his shoulder.
The ghoul jolted, scrambling to get up, but lost his balance, tumbling into the water. He resurfaced quickly, floofy hair now a soggy mess, making his horns look larger. Looking up at you, he quickly snapped his gaze back down, hoisting himself out of the water. The snowflake was now a mushy wad stuck to his hand.
"You're not supposed to be here," he mumbled.
"I know." You held his hand and peeled off clumps of the sparkly wet paper, trying to make sure no sticky residue was left on the skin.
"You could be in a lot of trouble though."
"I know."
"Well?" he huffed. "Don't you care that you could be excommunicated?"
"I care about my friends." Putting a hand to his heart, you could feel the beginnings of a ghoul purr. Pulling the hand away, you went back to picking the mess off his hand.
"Is that how you see me? Just a friend?"
You looked up at him, seeing if he was looking. He immediately fixed his eyes on the mosaic walls behind you.
"You never asked if you wanted to be more than friends." Having successfully picked the snowflake off, you hesitantly shoved the wet clump into your pocket, deciding to throw it away once you got back to the art room.
"I was going to ask you, but now my present is ruined," he said, gesturing to your wet pocket. With two clean hands, he smoothed over and squeegeed the excess water out of his hair. Scrunching it up a bit, some of the waves started to form again in his dark locks, making him look more like Rain and less like a soggy rat.
"You could always have my snowflake." You looked at your feet, hoping he would catch on.
"Yeah, but I didn't make it."
"No. But I made it and if I give it to you then…"
"Oh. Oh!" he said, seeming to catch on. "Let me go get changed. Um… do you want to go for a walk in the rose garden later? I can bring a picnic basket. I'm not sure what humans eat exactly. I've never um… any humans before. Are you allergic to milk?"
"Come on," you laughed, "let's get you some dry clothes. I've got to go back to the art room and clean up whatever mess Aether supervised."
Holding out your hand, Rain carefully took it, mindful of his claws. You walked up the steps hand in hand, Rain's tail swishing to land on your outside hip. When you reached the top, you let go, feet angling towards the art room.
"Well, duty calls," you said. "Should I meet you in the cafeteria around 5?"
"Yes. That sounds like a plan," he said, pointing finger guns at you. "I'll see you then." And with that, he bounded up the stairs to the ghoul dormitories, two at a time.
You hadn’t gotten more than a hundred feet down the corridor when Rain came barreling back down the hallway, boots still squishing from his dip in the grotto.
"I forgot something," he panted.
"What?"
Quickly, cupping your face between his hands, he pressed his lips to your hairline. It was a soft kiss, not lasting more than a couple of seconds, but it was long enough to savor the drafty hallway, the way his soaked vest touched your own clothes, and the way his breath briefly ruffled your hair.
Pulling back, he turned, running back to the dormitories. He called back, “See you at 5!”
Waving back, your stomach flipped. This wasn’t how you expected a day of arts and crafts to end, but you couldn’t be happier about it.

RUNS
please don’t think ur art is getting worse. I aspire to do art like u, my artstyle has taken so much stuff from u because I love it sm that actually saying ur art is getting worse is insulting to me 🙄 /nsrs
Ur art is sketchy but colourful and playful and soft
Ur art feels like a bonfire on a summer night in the middle of a forest, where people tell stories and play music and sing songs
Ur art looks like a walk on the beach as the sunsets, everything basked in honey golden light as the warm dark blue water hits the shore in small waves
Ur art is like walking through a forest with a friend, not talking but just sitting in that comfortable silence as birds chirp in the trees and leads sway in the air, trusting each other enough to not feel the need to speak to be entertained with one another
Ur art is like playing traditional songs passed down generations by generations in guitar
Ur art is like freshly baked cookies on Christmas
Ur art is like a traveler exploring the world with wonder and joy
Ur art is like watching bugs and insects on leads
Ur art is like early morning dew
Those are the vibes I get whenever I see ur art. Please don’t think ur art is getting worse because that is completely a blatant lie, and just something in ur mind. So, so many people love ur art and u deserve to be one of those people too.
this is genuienly one of the sweetest things ive ever been told wtf man
like this matters to me a lot dear lordddd
im gonna keep the quote ''So, so many people love ur art and u deserve to be one of those people too.'' close to my heart if you dont ind

let us tell the tale of another Dream Monster, somewhere else in the world of Magic Land, in another time… maybe.. I don't actually know when this happened in relation to the previous story..
…regardless!
[WIP] The Movie - Chapter 1 The Prologue (Part II)
This is the story of Jack Honey-Dew.
[She is the 1st of the VII Main Characters_]
She lives with her pet woof Goldie, in a humble little home sitting on a roundabout, in a quaint little place called Claptrap City. She's carefree but caring of others, One Smart Cookie, and she's rather very small. A little lass. Here's the rundown; she's a little bundle of love.
Tumblr media
[drawing 1 - Jack Honey-Dew]
Today is a Very special day, as it's the birthday of Jack's parent, the one and only, Joey Buttermilk! Head inventor at Claptrap City, responsible for creating public transport! self opening doors! and countless other major (and minor) inventions to better the world of Planet-Magic-Land, and all of Magic Land in general! Somewhat clumsy and Extremely careless, but full of nothing but love for the world (and for their daughter)
Tumblr media
[drawing 2 - Joey Buttermilk]
Jack arrives at Joey's place, but Joey is nowhere to be seen! Snooping and Sneaking and Looking Around, she finds a VHS, addressed to her no less! So without further ado, she slots it into Joey's VHS Player, and watches the footage of Joey, filming themself from an unfamiliar place..
Joey - "Hey there sport, my little light of life, you're probably wondering why I'm nowhere to be found! So allow me to explain myself.. you know, I don't think I ever told you Jack... Long ago, long before I was blessed with the gift of little old You, and back when I had only just started making a name for myself as a... "moderately"…. "successful"….. "inventor"…... I had one day taken on a job from an unknown client, asking me to create some sort of Power Source, that, as the client described, would somehow "benefit all of Magic Land" I, being young and naive and not knowing a Whole Lot Better, and a little Too eager to jump at any chance to make the world a better place, took the job immediately.
I worked tirelessly on the project night and day and months and months until the Power Source was finally complete.. 'The Devil's Engine' "
[drawing 3 - The Devil's Engine]
Jack asks why Joey would name something they thought would benefit the world something as ominous and intimidating as "The Devil's Engine"
Joey points out that they're just a VHS recording and can't answer any questions…
but ultimately answers with "because it Sounded Cool"
this is true, it DOES sound cool
Joey - ...*ahem*
..OH Right, please Continue Joey..
Joey - "…..it wasn't until the Devil's Engine was complete that I finally met face to face with the mysterious client who had hired me in the first place, it was a General, it was none other than General War! A Greedy Selfish and a BIG Naughty who relished nothing more than the thrill of Power and Chaos. She revealed her true plan to me; the Devil's Engine would be used to power nothing more than a weapon, some new technology described as, something called a.."Tank".. that "Wouldn't Even Need A Pilot" a weapon that could apparently, single-handedly, turn the tide on any battlefield, something called 'Project Nidhogg'. Now, you know how I feel about War and The Machines That Fuel It Jack, so I wasn't particularly keen on getting anymore information on the project itself..
However! All I remember is the General boasted that with this new weapon, she'd use it's tremendous power to travel to the War Dimension, and once there with her mighty creation, the war machines trapped there would gladly bow to her feet, and with their combined powers she could then set out on her One True Goal; to locate the Forbidden Seven (VII) Idols!! With which she'd use to Locate and Uncover the Power of the elusive Rainbow Skull!!1! using it's power of infinite wishes she would plunge the whole of Magic Land into darkness!!!1!! making the world her own personal battlefield from which SHE!!! ! WOULD BE THE TRUE RULER OF!!!11!!!1!!!!! ! etc
Tumblr media
[drawing 4 - The General's True Plan (Artist's Interpretation)]
I responded to all this exposition with a swift kick in the General's.. 'private quarters' and simply left.
What I had.. 'forgotten' to mention however, is the Devil's Engine could only be activated via the Super Secret Cool Pawprint Scanner™ that I had installed, which Only responds to my own Pawprint DNA, otherwise, the Power Core is useless, a kind of 'failsafe' I suppose, and with it being clear that the General wouldn't be able to find any other old inventor to simply Build A New Power Source, this had left 'Project Nidhogg' practically useless.. thwarting the General's plan before it ever even started…
Ever since then, General War has likely been hunting me down tirelessly, a ghost from my past trying to seep into the present, planning to, most likely, kidnap me and force me to finally activate the Devil's Engine.. awakening her Horrid Creation, putting the General's terrible plan back into motion, and dooming the world and destroying everything we all know and love…"
...Joey then says this actually has nothing to do with why they're currently missing.
...
..thanks Joey.
...
..Joey then realises there isn't enough tape left on the VHS to Actually explain why they're missing so all they're able to provide is some coordinates.
...
THANKS. JOEY.
With nothing but coordinates to go on to some place called "the Tree of Old Solomon", Jack packs her essentials (mainly Goldie and her walking cane) and prepares to head off.
Before she heads off however, Jack phones up her best friend to check up on him, it's his birthday today too after all! He seems to be well and thanks her again for the gift she got him, a pair of red trainers! She hates to ask this on his birthday but, nevertheless, she asks if he'd be able to join her on this Epic Quest. He tells her as much as he would love to, he's currently got his own Prologue he's going through! Jack understands, they both wish each other the best of luck, and they both promise to tell each other all about their adventures afterwards. Her friend then says something about stealing a boat, but before Jack can ask, the call ends..
Jack and Goldie hop into Jack's Custom-Made-Super-Cool Boat (it's a bathtub) and set sail, off to seek out Joey..
Tumblr media
[drawing 5 - setting sail, off to seek out Joey]
After a gruelling.. One (1) day's journey, after following the coordinates as best as they can, Jack and Goldie arrive at a mysterious island. Housing a mighty tree, lush and so large it's branches are big enough to hold entire houses, and the very top is hidden up in the clouds! Jack and Goldie have no choice but to assume they have arrived at none other, than the Tree of Old Solomon.
Tumblr media
[drawing 6 - the Tree of Old Solomon]
When Jack and Goldie arrive on the shore they are quickly greeted! …by someone hanging upside-down by her leg. Jack meets Shoelace, a clumsy, nervous, awkward wreck who's always in the Wrong Place at the Wrong Time.
[drawing VII - Shoelace (upside-down)]
Shoelace - "Hark! Brave Travellers! (you there with the fat dog) you stand at the base of the mighty Titan; Old Solomon! hm? I do not know of a fellow named 'Joey' but you're best bet is the most obvious of solutions; climb this mighty tree, trek upwards, Go All Vertical, and seek council with whomsoever lives on his outstretched branches, and if that doesn't grant you any new knowledge, then if you truly mean to find this '... Johnny Joey!' then your last resort should be 'The Guy Upstairs'… How to begin the trek? There are lifts of course! OH and.. while you're up there.. if you could.. free me.. that would be nice, I fell for the siren-call of this rope and now find myself ensnared by her ropey machinations.. Now Go Forth! many Best of Lucks upon thee! You'll not know fear as long as I may live! ...and so on!"
It doesn't take Jack long looking around before she indeed finds the main lift leading upwards, built into the base of this mighty tree! ..but it's busted. Luckily growing up with an ever inquisitive inventor as a parent, Jack knows her way around all things technology! Though, this lift is rather beyond her. She's never seen such metalwork and the inner machinations aren't the usual circuits she's become accustomed to… in other words; Big Cogs are Not her forte.
Upon returning to our upside-down friend, Shoelace only now remembers to tell Jack that indeed the lifts are busted, that main lift, and the others like it further up the tree, were all made long ago by the Legendary Blacksmith who lives here! The Blacksmith used to regularly check up on the lifts and keep them in good shape, but that was long ago, and as the Blacksmith became more and more reclusive, it's no wonder the lifts have fallen into such disarray, if Jack is going to climb this tree, she'll need the help of this Blacksmith. Shoelace tells Jack she can find the Blacksmith in her forge, on the opposite end of the island to where Jack parked her.. "boat". Shoelace points her in the right direction (although somewhat struggles at first, being upside-down frazzling her sense of direction) and Jack takes off to see the Blacksmith.
Jack uses the opportunity to give Goldie a well deserved walk and take in the sights on the way. There.. isn't much to see. A couple of Palm Trees, a few rocks, and a nervous wreck hanging upside-down, so it's not long before Jack indeed spots the forge, a small and reclusive looking little place, smoke clouds poofing out from it's tall chimney, and the faint sound of clanking emanating from within.. (that means someone's at home!)
As Jack heads towards the forge however, of all the things she could come across, she passes by a dimly lit alleyway in a crevice of the Base of the tree.. was this always here? it seems rather out of place..
From the strange alleyway, a figure beckons Jack over, and against her better judgement, Jack approaches..
From the darkness of the alley, the figure steps forth.. kind of. Still hidden in the shadows, it's hard to make them out clearly, but it seems like they're rather well dressed, the most noticeable feature however is that the Right Side Of Their Face Seems To Be Missing, not that that's an issue mind you.
The figure simply hands Jack something, it's a.. Typewriter! Jack has heard about these but never seen one in person! It's like a new way to type, and print, at the same time! And it makes cool sounds as you make up stories! Jack looks up to ask Why, and Who, and How, and What, and maybe even a Where, but sees the figure is gone! The whole alleyway is gone! She's staring right at nothing but tree trunk. Was that a strange hallucination? a vivid dream? she's still holding the Typewriter, so it must have happened..
Tumblr media
[drawing 8 - The Typewriter]
Jack has no choice but to shake it off, and shifts her focus back to the task at hand. Carrying the hefty Typewriter, she continues to the forge..
Leaving Goldie to guard the Typewriter outside, Jack enters the forge, and it's about what you'd expect, kind of. The walls are decorated with all sorts of tools and a huge variety of metals and other materials to work with, a roaring fire burns in the back, and the smell of heat and metals (and rather thick smoke) fills the air. It seems like this Blacksmith does not create any Weapons however, as along with the tools and materials, the walls and tables are also lined with prosthetics, varying in all shapes and sizes, and Jack even recognises some parts for wheelchairs and walking canes along the walls too! You would think an over abundance of Tools, Materials, and Projects both Finished and Unfinished in such a small place would be messy and crowded, but it is remarkable how surprisingly tidy and organised everything is! Though what catches Jack's eye the most, is the Blacksmith herself.
A huge one-armed shark-like being almost as tall as the forge itself works at her anvil, their right arm hammering down on her current piece of work, the metal itself attached to her anvil by a clamp to help the Blacksmith work one handed, and every time her hammer meets the metal Jack can feel every impact reverberate in her bones, as Sparks and Ancient Magic buzz and fly off the Blacksmith's current project. Jack tries to make her presence known to the, quite frankly, intimidating figure she sees before her, but the Blacksmith being so focused on their work doesn't seem to realise little Jack's there at all. A brief moment of silence gives Jack a chance to speak up, but before Jack can let a single word leave her mouth, the Blacksmith opens her own mouth and bellows out a mighty flame onto the metal to heat it up! I guess it saves her time to unclamp the metal and carry it over to their furnace every time they want to heat it up, though that raises the question that Jack wonders as to why the Blacksmith has that roaring fire in the back still going then..
Going over to the fire, she sees the Blacksmith is using it to cook a quaint little meal.
ah.
Waiting for an(other) opportunity of silence, Jack sees no other option but to patiently wait for the Blacksmith to be finished with her work. After what seems like a patient eternity (it was a few minutes) the Blacksmith finally puts the finished piece of the new prosthetic she was working on into her barrel of water to cool it off, and hangs it up with the countless others. With the Blacksmith done, Jack finally is able to make her presence known to them (she taps her cane against one of the many sheets of metal a few times) The Blacksmith realises she has a visitor, the intimidating presence vanishes as she nervously tidies herself, and after seemingly putting her hammer away Somewhere on her person (though Jack can't seem to see where) the Blacksmith finally turns around to greet her guest. The two finally see face to face and there is an incredible silence. Jack sees the most beautiful being she has ever seen in her life, and for the Blacksmith seeing Jack, it is the same.
[drawing 9 - The Blacksmith and Jack see eye to eye]
The few moments of Awkward Gay Silence seem like an eternity..
Jack is the first to get Actual Words out of her mouth that aren't just "hsdvbjhs"
She fumbles and trips over words like loose pavement, but manages to introduce herself, and gives the Blacksmith the lowdown, about Joey, about the coordinates, about the quest to climb sky high up the tree, and asks if the Blacksmith could help out by repairing the lifts that Shoelace had told Jack she had made. After managing to get some coherent words out of her own mouth too, the Blacksmith shyly introduces herself, as Chalk Sunshine.
[She/They are the 3rd of the VII Main Characters_]
Fumbling over her own words, Chalk says she's sorry to hear about Jack's dilemma, about her missing parent, but most of all about the lifts, as they were her responsibility to keep in good condition, and, after some hesitation and some reflection on her negligence, she says she'll gladly help as best she can. She admits though it's been a Good While since she's been outside.. At All, so to say she's a little nervous and shy is a.. Vast understatement, Jack understands and says she'll try her best to make Chalk feel as comfortable as possible :)
As they leave the Forge and Jack introduces Chalk to Goldie however, Jack remembers the Great Big Heaving Typewriter she's going to have to carry all the way up the tree. Chalk says she might be able to help with that, and reveals a secret compartment in her chest! (it's not as gross as it sounds) That explains where she put her hammer away earlier.. Chalk plops the Typewriter into her chest, and they continue to the main lift.
Chalk fixes the lift without any issues whatsoever, as Jack watches on in fascination at Chalk's powerful yet delicate handiwork and craftsmanship. As they take the repaired lift upwards Jack compliments Chalk's work, Chalk shyly accepts the compliment, and admits that she's actually worked on most machinery in the whole of Magic Land long ago, and was once even known as the 'Legendary Blacksmith'. Jack says she's surprised she's never heard any tales about a Legendary Blacksmith, and Chalk admits that was a long time ago, and considering she's "given up" for a long time now, it's no wonder the tales fell into obscurity. When Jack goes to ask why they gave up, Chalk begins to trail off and falls silent, Jack decides to leave it at that.
The trip up the tree is an adventure and a half, arriving on one branch, solving some side quests, asking about Joey, not getting many answers, then repairing the next lift and heading up even higher. They free Shoelace from the dastardly Rope Demon, help cure The Fox of her Evil Cold, defeat the powerful Dragon of Beltfarst Square, and reunite the family of Lil' Guys, all the while, the friendship between Jack and Chalk grows ever stronger, and Jack and Chalk grow closer and closer.
[drawing 10 - All Those Cool Adventures I Done Did Talk About ^]
On each lift upwards Jack and Chalk bond over similarities and differences, Jack gushes and gossips about circuitry and technology and all the things her parent Joey made and taught her, as Chalk (tries her best) to keep up and listen to everything Jack has to share with her, and Chalk shares with Jack all the things she's crafted and made, about all the different metals and materials she works with and all their unique properties, as Jack hangs onto every word that comes out of this shy shark's mouth.. though Jack can't help sense hesitation in her voice when getting too deep into what she's created in the past. After all the adventures up the tree, and Still no information on Joey, they finally reach the final major branch of the Tree of Old Solomon, right before it trails off into the clouds, supposedly where 'The Guy Upstairs' resides. Finally getting a moment to catch their breath, Jack, Chalk, and Goldie, take a rest, sitting on an old bench Chalk made herself long ago, as they stare off into the ocean's horizon.
[drawing 11 - Peace and Quiet]
Chalk thanks Jack for the little adventure they've had today, she's spent so long cooped up in her forge that the very thought of leaving overwhelmed her, frightened her, being trapped in her own home by their own thoughts, but being with Jack, it's all seemed so easy, all her anxieties seemed to melt away, and together, they've both climbed to the highest point of this giant tree! Somewhere Chalk hasn't been in a long time. Jack thanks Chalk for helping her out, to say she's enjoyed being around Chalk is an Immense Understatement.
After a comfortable silence in each other's company, Chalk admits she doesn't actually know what's going to lie above the clouds, or who, or What, 'The Guy Upstairs' is, so, Chalk decides now is a better time than any to get some things off her chest, and tell Jack about her past, and why she became so reclusive in the first place. Jack tells her that she doesn't need to go into it if it's too uncomfortable, but Chalk says it's about time she told Someone.
Chalk explains that, like she said before, she's crafted many ancient pieces of machinery throughout Magic Land, often on an absurd scale. the very Sun and the Moons orbit Planet-Magic-Land with encouraging help from enormous cogs and gears crafted by Chalk, the seas move and churn and form waves thanks to the many fans and pumps created by Chalk deep underwater, and she would often do all this from the comfort of her forge in a world separate from all others, in a place called Haven-Home. There, she forged the armour worn by the legendary Gracie the War Monger, she made all the gardening tools for Daffodil the Gardener, and even all the cooking utensils and pots and pans for Pillow the Chef, but when it came to Zeus, (self proclaimed) ruler of Haven-Home, he had other plans.
After witnessing the destruction that her own Mentor.. and Grandfather, had unleashed upon thousands of worlds with the weapons he had forged long long ago, Chalk had, and still has, a strict "no weapons" policy when it comes to her craft, so when Zeus came along and tricked her with a project she could not resist, fooling her into believing she was creating something that could benefit the land, only to discover she had been tricked into creating The Unkillable Warrior, a War Machine specifically designed to wield the very weapons her mentor had created, well, needless to say she was gutted and felt completely betrayed, and so out of shame and defeat, she packed her things, left Haven-Home, and went into self-exile on the island of the Tree of Old Solomon, and although at first it helped to build the homes for the residents of the island and create and maintain the lifts, it didn't take long for the self doubt and shame from Zeus' trick to creep up on her, and so, over time she became more and more reclusive, until finally reaching a point where she'd never leave her forge..
[drawing 12 - betrayal]
Jack gives her a hug.
She tells Chalk about how good people can be tricked in the worst ways, and even mentions Joey's (seemingly irrelevant) VHS story, about how they had once been tricked into building a Power Source for a literal Machine of War, but despite this incident, Joey has pushed onwards and has made so much more to benefit monsterkind, and, Jack points out, so has Chalk. Jack then fangirls for a Good Solid Couple Of Minutes about how Chalk has literally built machines that QUITE LITERALLY HELP MOVE THE PLANETS AND THE SEAS!! ARE YOU KIDDING ME?!?
After the somewhat Overwhelming positivity from Jack, Chalk thanks her yet again, and promises she'll continue to march onwards to better things, to help others, but more importantly, to also help herself. The two hug and share a tender moment, before preparing for the clouds just above. Chalk, with tools and materials from her handy Secret Chest Compartment, along with New Technological Knowhow from Jack, make one final lift together, to (hopefully) get some answers about Joey up above.
It doesn't take the two long to complete the new lift, all sparkly and spangly and powered by love (and gears and stuff) and, with Goldie, the three take the lift up into the clouds.
On their journey upwards through thick fog and clouds, they briefly reach a clearing in the sky, a sea of cloud below and above them, a calm blue sky in-between, with the occasional branch piercing through. The moment of peace is.. interrupted, by an individual sitting idly on one of the branches, feet dangling, holding a sign pointed upwards, with the words "BOSS TIME" written across their chest. Jack and Chalk meet Mx. Boss, a motivational speaker to give some words of wisdom for the Boss Fight to come.
[drawing 13 - Mx. Boss]
Mx. Boss - "...Hey there Kiddos, it's me, ya girl Mx. Boss! Me? Well I'm a Lover not a Fighter, so you'll be seeing me cheering you on before the Big Fights :) Good Luck ya lovebirds <3 yep. dat's all I got for this one today. bye."
...
ok. well. thank you!
Jack and Chalk say their thanks, before heading into the clouds above, to The Guy Upstairs...
Jack, Chalk, and Goldie, find themselves at the very tippy top! A field of endless cloud, firm enough to stand on, rolling seemingly into forever, as spirals and spikes of soft cloud decorate the landscape. The main attraction that catches Jack and Chalk's eyes however, is what appears to be the tip of the Tree itself. There is a Large Skull on it. He is wearing a Crown.. and a false moustache. This IS The Guy Upstairs. The Guy Upstairs IS the tree himself! Jack and Chalk (and Goldie) find themselves stood before the man himself..
Old Solomon Gravypot; Grand King of..
...
whatever the island the tree is on is called
[drawing 14 - Old Solomon Gravypot]
The twisty-turny trunk of the tree housing his head bends down to examine these three, who have climbed up his body, solving side quests and helping the folks of his land. You would think most people would be grateful. Unfortunately, to put it brief, Old Solomon Gravypot..
umm, how do I put this..
Sucks Massive Cuss
Before Jack, Chalk, or even Goldie, can get a single word or even breath out of their mouths, the man bellows out an alarmingly loud monologue.
Old Solomon Gravypot -
"WELL LOOKIE WHO IT IS! YOU COME CRAWLING BACK EHHH?!?!? YOU THINK YOU CAN CRAWL UP MY BODY AND SOLVE PEOPLE'S PROBLEMS
HMMMMMM??!?!?!!?1/??1
YOU THINK JUST BECAUSE I SCARRED YOUR FACE, TRAPPED YOUR PARENTS IN THE FOREVER CUBE, SUNK THE GREAT WHEREVER WAY, SPIT IN YOUR DOG'S DINNER, COUGHED IN YOUR CAT'S COFFEE, READ THAT CRACKER JOKE OUT LOUD ABOUT THE ELEPHANT'S SWIMMING TRUNKS
YEAH YOU KNOW THE ONE
READ THE ALPHABET BACKWARDS AT YOUR GRADUATION, SANG THE NUMBERS FORWARD AT YOUR PET'S BIRTHDAY, VAPORISED KING CONKER, DESTROYED THE CASTLE OF ANXRAX AT THE GREAT BATTLE AT WHICH WE MET FEARSOME BLADES AND FOUGHT AND ALL THAT
YOU THINK THAT GIVES YOU PERMISSION TO DO STUFF??!!!?
WHY I OUGHTA! BACK IN MY DAY! TASTE THY HALLOWED BLADE! YOU'LL NOT KNOW PEACE AS LONG AS I MAY LIVE, HAVE AT THEE, HAVE AT SOME, HAVE AT-
what wait a minute."
The, quite frankly terrifying, king creaks over and actually observes the three guests (his eyesight isn't very good)
Old Solomon Gravypot - "...oh I thought you were someone else.
WELL YOU'VE STILL BEEN CLIMBING UP ME AND SOLVING PROBLEMS AND QUESTS AND STUFF, AND IF THERE'S ONE THING I HATE IT'S STUFF!! AND THINGS!!! SO
uuuhh.
... I ran out of threats..
DIE.
yeh that works lol."
without getting a single word in, Jack and Chalk and Goldie are met with Old Solomon Gravypot's HyperMegaUltraWoweyZoweyDeathBeam ...™
In a Fluster and a Big Panic, Chalk scrambles to grab something, anything, from her handy Secret Chest Compartment, and after grabbing some flint, some lint, and some mints (she was wondering where she left those) the first sturdy, solid, hefty item she grabs that Jack and Chalk use as a shield is,
the Typewriter.
[drawing 15 - the Typewriter (in case you forgor what it look like) ]
The King's, uhh.. Lazer
you know what it's called I'm not colouring all that text again
collides with the typewriter, and there's an almighty clash of noise and colour and stuff, and things!
Old Solomon Gravypot -
"WHAT?!? THE SACRED ITEM!!! YOU WEREN'T SUPPOSED TO BRING THAT HERE HOW DID YOU OH NO I CAN'T STOP THE HYPERMEGAULTRAWO-
there's a blinding light and everything goes white.
[!-TECHNICAL DIFFICULTIES PLEASE STAND BY-!]
...
Jack, Chalk and Goldie awaken somewhere new entirely, and it.. Kinda Sucks. There's nothing around but hastily taped and stapled together cardboard, the "hills" around them are clearly piles of cardboard boxes with green sheets thrown over them, the floor is a dull, plain, slightly damp open "field" of cardboard, with the word "GRAS S" written in huge letters across it with a big marker. The marker is still on the ground, lid left off. The sky is a dull white and the faint noise of radio static fills the otherwise empty silence.
Before Jack and Chalk (and Goldie) can get a better look of their surroundings (not that there's anything worth looking at) there's a rumble, and a large figure emerges from behind a cardboard cutout of a.. shape. His name is Nelson. He is made of cardboard and sponge. Nelson is a large fellow and looms over the trio. As he rests his cardboard hands on the.. shape he's behind, his lower half hidden behind it, he leans in to get a better look.
[drawing 16 - Nelson (and his.. domain.) ]
Nelson - "Well Look WHo i' is.. if it isn't the Two that
BROKE THE STORY.
well? why ya 'ere then? bit early to be lookin' for the Secret Ending eh?"
Jack and Chalk aren't sure how to respond to literally any of this. The last few minutes have been a rollercoaster of adrenaline and anxiety. At least they're not getting completely screamed at by a Giant Skull.
Nelson - "I mean... I appreciate ya getting me my Typewriter back, but…"
Nelson reaches behind the.. shape he's behind and lifts up a table, before slamming it down between himself and Jack and Chalk (and Goldie) The Typewriter sits on the table, blackened and charred and Not In The Best Of Shape.
Nelson - "…did ya really haff to DESTROY THE DANG THING?? …sigh"
he throws the table, and the typewriter off to the side with little care as it smashes into one of the... 'hills'
Nelson - "Ohhh It's Fine, you two didn't know what you were doin'..."
this is Very True.
Finally being able to get a word in, Chalk asks Where they are exactly. Nelson says they find themselves on the Plain of Higher Existence, Chalk asks 'How High' and Nelson answers "Well, if ya imagine a treehouse.. a bit 'igher than that!" this is a little Too high for Chalk's low key fear of heights, but she thinks she'll get by, especially with Jack by her side.
Jack suddenly remembers why they've done all they've done! Why they came all this way! Joey!! "Where's Joey??" Jack yells out, though the past few minutes of adrenaline turning it more into a war cry than a question.
Jack -
"WHERE'S JOEY"
see? told you
Nelson - "Hm? HUH?? JOEY?? Ya lookin' for a Joey?!?
OH!
Ya must be lil' Jackie!! Joey's kid!! They've not shuddup 'bout you since they've been 'ere, even showed me ya babey pics!! but I 'ain't gonna judge! hoho!"
[drawing 17 - Jack's babby pics]
Jack - "hey!! Narrator!!! Don't show those!!"
hoho oh I'm sorry Jack! oh I can't resist sharing, they're just So Cute!
Chalk - "they have a point Jack .. I think baby Jack is Very cute.."
Jack - "...well if you think so then it's ok..
! wait! Joey's HERE?!?"
As if on cue, a familiar face (at least to Jack) emerges from behind a door Jack nor Chalk had noticed before (Goldie noticed but she didn't want to brag)
Wiping their hands on a filthy cloth and covered in grease and stains, it's none other than Joey! Jack's parent! One and Only, One Of A Kind, etcetera.
[drawing 18 - Joey!!! covered in grease, followed by a hug from Jack :-] and a leg nudge from Goldie too]
Joey apologises first and foremost for ever scaring their little Jackie in the first place, and explains the situation quite plainly. You see, every few months or so, Nelson's old boiler starts acting up, and for a long time now, Joey, an old friend of Nelson, has always come to fix the boiler, and have a bit of a catch up with their old friend too. Joey meant to stay at home for their Birthday today (after all, they've always shared their special day with Jack at home) but on this particular day Nelson just had the worse bit of luck with his boiler, AND a (few) massive leak(s), and needed Joey's help asap! Joey meant to explain all this on the VHS, but, well, we saw how that went.
OHH, so that's why this place is so damp, because of the leaks!
Nelson - "Oh no, it's just like that 'ere"
oh, gross
Nelson - "yeah :-| "
But, hang on! Jack and Chalk ponder, if they had to "Break The Story" , seemingly shattering reality to get here, then how did Joey get up here?
Joey says they took the stairs. Joey does not elaborate.
...ok
And so with Joey found, there's only really one thing left to do.
And so with the help of Jack, (and after introductions between Chalk and Joey are made) with Chalk's help too, together they manage to finally fix Nelson's pesky leaks and boiler :) (or until things inevitably break again in a month or so)
[drawing 19 - fixing plumbing and a boiler (sure why not I'm sure you want to see a drawing of that) ]
Jack asks Chalk that, now that Joey is found and now that Chalk is getting used to going outside again, if they'd maybe like to spend a little more time together? Chalk thinks about her forge, the place she's been trapped in for a huge portion of her life, by her own hand, and Chalk seems keen on heading into a whole new world before her, and asks if there'd be somewhere, say, near Claptrap City where she could set up shop? Joey says they're sure they'll be able to find something, and Nelson reassures Chalk that her forge will still be here whenever she wants to pay a visit, after all, not just anyone can keep those lifts in shape, and Chalk says she'd be happy to keep things in check again :)
And so, finally, Jack, Chalk, Joey and trusty Goldie, set sail back home in Jack's wonderful boat (still a bathtub), to head back home and celebrate the rest of Joey's birthday! the residents of the Tree of Old Solomon wave goodbye, as they look forward to their next return.. and Jack and Chalk begin officially dating :)
Nelson also can't seem to find his Typewriter, but that's okay, was pretty busted anyways..
The End :-]
