pairing: sanemi shinazugawa x fem!reader

prompt: he’s scared of leaving you alone because of the demon slayer mark rules. it’s caused a lot of arguments, but even still, you’re staying with him for as long as you can.

note: this lil picture thing is stupid but it’s also cute so yeahhhh🫰🏾 blame my terrible editing skills

“sanemi?” you call, padding around the house in search of your husband.

he’d been distant lately and you found it weird.

did you do something wrong?

but you turned the corner and there he was, suddenly sat on the couch with his head in his hands.

“you scared me.” you say, a coy grin on your face.

“sorry.” he utters in his gruff voice. you notice he seemed a bit off.

“is something wrong?” you ask as you trail over. taking a seat beside him on the couch, you take his hand in yours to try and reassure him about whatever’s going on.

he glanced at you. a soft look glossed over his eyes the moment he saw you and for some reason he couldn’t hold back his tears.

tears? from sanemi? you’d never seen him cry before.

“nemi…” you muttered, kissing his knuckle and running his back with your free hand. “what’s wrong?”

he leaned into your shoulder, his hair tickling your chin.

“i’m selfish.” he says simply.

you manage to hold in your laughter as you ask, “and how is that?”

“in four… no, three years, i’m going to leave you and…” he sighs deeply, wrapping his arms around your waist and hugging you close. so close that you could feel the love he had for you. “and our kid. i don’t want to leave you to raise them by yourself.” he whimpered.

you felt terrible hearing him cry like this. it was such a rare thing, you thought it’d never happen ever again.

ever…

and suddenly, you started crying.

“he won’t even know who i am!” Sanemi choked out.

you pet his hair down.

“yes he will. i’ll make sure of it. tell him everything there is to know about you, like how much you loved him and how much you cared.” you try to assure. but the reality sunk into you.

you only had 3 years left together? that wasn’t nearly enough time. and the days only seemed to pass by quicker and quicker every year, and in a flash it’d be 2 years and then…

you just wished that somehow the rule didn’t apply now that muzan was gone and you could raise your son together.

“sanemi, i love you.” you say. and in that moment you think you meant it more than any other time you’d said it.

“i love you too.” he responds near instantly.

and no matter what, you’d make sure that your son would know how much his father loved him and you and how he’d sacrifice the world to save him.

because at least in that lifetime, you were sticking together.

i keep seeing “me and my husband” by mitski in gallavich playlists and like… no. WRONG. INCORRECT. *loud incorrect buzzer*

are ian and mickey husbands?? YES. are they happy? YES. and that is precisely why they are not “me and my husband”.

“me and my husband” is so grossly misinterpreted and it kills me… it is not about a healthy relationship; the song isn’t about a stable happy marriage like…

you know who fits “me and my husband”? lip and mandy.

the song is about a houswife who is dependent on her spouse- who places her worth on her husband. it’s about unhealthy attachment, being so attached and dependent that you really aren’t your own person without your spouse, and not in a good way. not like you fit together like puzzle pieces, like you are really not a person without them.

season 3 mandy IS that song. people joke about how mandy’s like a housewife, and like, yeah she kinda is. being without lip, or even the thought of being without him, destroys her. and it ends up literally destroying karen because of what it drove (no pun intended) mandy to do. “and i am the idiot with a painted face, in the corner, taking up space” is such a mandy line, especially when lip screams at her to go home to her own fucking house. she thrives when lip loves her, but when he doesn’t, she goes crazy. she craves it- she’s addicted to it because she’s never been loved and the only way she knows how to get love is through her sexuality, so she will literally do anything in her power to get him to love her even if it means ruining herself.

anyways, ian and mickey may be attached, but they aren’t attached like that. they have been unhealthy and toxic, but not like that. ian and mickey are much more like “i’m your man” by mitski.

ME AND MY HUSBAND IS NOT SOME HAPPY LOVE SONG. And as much as I love love love mitski you really think MICKEY MILKOVICH is putting her on ?

GONNA EXSPLAIN WHY THIS IS WRONG NOW.

'Me and my husband' can ofc like all songs be interpreted differently. I'm gonna explain the interpretation I most strongly agree with (this is also from what I've seen is a pretty common interpretation). I'll also talk about how it doesn't relate to gallavich.

It starts with a heavy sigh. Straight away, you get a tired and negative feeling from the song. This alone is enough (imo) to tell that this isn't gallaviche's song because in what world would either of them start talking about their husband with a sigh? Mickey and Ians' relationship is the strongest it has ever been once they married. If anything, they should be having a sigh of relief because they finally get to be together.

Although the instrumentals are rather upbeat, the lyrics carry a sombre tone. "So I bet all that I have on that furrowed brow" comes to mind straight away. You have furrowed brows when ur angry, maybe upset/confused. One of her husbands noticeable traits is a thing of negative connotations. You could see this as a hint to her husband being abusive. Neither Ian nor mickey are abusive, so would not fit this role within the song.

These lines come across as almost desperate. Sure, you could see this as her lighting up as she sees her love, but to me, it's more than that. She feels helpless when he's not around. She only have value when her husband is with her / she needs her husband to feel validated and worth something. Maybe she's nothing but she has her husbands loves and she desperately hangs on to that to feel for herself. Mickey and Ian don't have that dynamic. They are both self-assured people by themselves.

To me this song feels like she is clinging to a relationship because she doesn't feel sustained by herself. She's trapped chasing the feeling of being loved. It has this undertone of "yeah he doesn't always treat me right but I've been with him so long ik he loves me in their somewhere and I am nothing without him so I'll stay" feeling to it. Its almost like she's been broken down by her husband so that see needs him and sees she's that but not enough to leave.

The slight repetition of "we're sticking together " affirms this for me. She's tired from start to finish trying to convince herself to hold out hope that her marriage can change. She can still be loved by him.

"At least in this lifetime" is a way of showing that she doesn't really want this. In another life, she would rather leave. Maybe she's scared to leave, and she's waiting for another life for the courage. Does any of this song like gallavich to you? Gallavich are desperate, sure, but they are desperate to finally be able to show love, not receive it.

Saying mickey relates to this song would be trying to say that he feels like nothing when Ian isn't around. The idea that mickey is only a love interest is irritating enough as it and u think he sees himself that way too?? I know mickey would get this song more than surface level. I mean, the man was a radiohead fan as a teenager. So, no, I don't think he relates to it.

I think if any relationship fit this song, it would be mandy and Lip.
