“So?” His hands clasp together, steepled in anticipation. “What did that extra get you? Flowers? Chocolates?”

“Nothing.”

“Come on.” Dynamight smirks. “I need to know so I can get my girl something better.”

You scoff as you place the bouquet of fresh red roses in a vase on his desk, courtesy of his new model girlfriend. The note, marked with a perfect lipstick stain, taunts you. “Is it a competition?”

“When it’s with Deku?” Dynamight flashes his canines. “Yes.”

“You’ll win either way. I wasn’t lying. He didn’t get me anything.” You do your best to keep the vitriol out of your voice, but there’s still a sharpness hidden in your tone.

Bakugo catches it, smile disappearing and his brows pinching together in an uncharacteristic concerned frown. “Oh… That case from the Commission is probably kicking his ass right now.”

“Yeah.” You shrug stiffly. “Enjoy the flowers.”

You feel like a bitch. Dynamight is right— you’ve seen how much Izuku has been working, spending late nights at his office, traveling abroad, meeting with some big officials in the government. You even told him to not worry for Valentine’s Day.

So, why were you mad? You had no right. And yet, you thought…

Buzz.

Your phone: Sorry baby, will make it back late 2nite :(( Don’t wait up on me

Well. It didn’t matter what you thought.

The day seems everlasting, annoyingly so. You would know— having to watch each of your coworkers get their own little presents and cards throughout the day. It would be just as bad if you went home and swiped through your phone all day, watching couple after couple post about their date plans. Fuck it, you’ll just stay back in the office and work ahead, it’s not like you have anything else to do.

“The fuck are you still doing here?” A gruff voice echoes from the hall.

“Why are you here?” You shot back, eyeing the hero who leans against your door frame. You recall when you first started working for Bakugo as his assistant, nervous to even look at him in the eye. Now, you openly glare at him. “Your date is at 8. It was hard as hell to get that reservation, you better not waste it.”

“She’s busy, said it in the note. Where’s your date?”

“He’s busy.”

He hums lowly before looking away, staring at the clutter on your desk. Precious hero figurines that you’ve been collecting for years are propped up in poses, along with a picture of you and Izuku. It was from so long ago, you barely remember the memory.

“Would you—” He starts.

“Can I—”

Silence takes over as the two of you interrupt one another.

“Sorry. You go.” You gesture at him to continue.

“Come with me. For dinner.”

“Me?”

Maybe it’s an illusion, but you swear the tips of his ear go pink. “You said it yourself. I can’t miss that reservation. And you said you don’t have plans…”

“Okay.”

“Seriously?” He sounds surprised. It makes your lips curl upward, followed by a breathless laugh.

“Why would I say no to free dinner?”

“I never said I was paying.”

“Oh, shut up, Katsuki.” It was not an illusion, you conclude, watching as his cheeks turn the same color pink as his ears. It takes you a moment to realize you said his given name.

“Alright. I’ll start the car.” He turns to walk out. “Check your desk before you go.”

“Huh?” Too late— he’s disappeared around the corridor.

Suspiciously, you scan your desk. Maybe he left some form that needed your signature? A PR proposal? But nothing seems to be out of order…

Wait. You pause, breath catching as you find the one thing that definitely was not there before. The Limited Edition All-Might Golden Figurine—the figure that was one of the ten ever made, and one that you’ve always dreamt of getting your hands on— stands boldly at your desk. You don’t know how you missed it, not knowing when it was placed there. You feel warmth bloom at your chest, knowing the one person who’d given it to you.

With hands still shaking in excitement and awe, you send out a text: I love you and I love the gift! Thanks baby!!

You find yourself grinning from ear to ear as you pack your things into your bag and put on your jacket. As you do so, your phone buzzes. A happy sigh flutters from your lips as you rummage through your purse to grab it. You knew he’d get you something! He wouldn’t have forgotten Valentine’s Day! And he’s gotten you the best gift you have ever gotten—

?? What gift?

You roll your eyes at his faux cluelessness, moving to take a picture of the figurine. But, as you do, you catch the note stuck to the bottom of it.

The handwriting isn’t Izuku’s. Though, you recognize it immediately.

Happy Valentine’s Day. I hope I won.

i adored this year's vday café designs so i wrote some hcs for them ^^

⚠️ modern AU

♡ Mary

With a delicate and highly sophisticated palate, Mary is always searching for something new to satisfy her. For Valentine's Day, she books a private tour at a high-end champagne house.

Her driver is scheduled to pick you up in the early afternoon. She arranged your date so “late” to give herself ample time to settle on an outfit. Her room is littered with hat boxes and empty hangers and piles of ‘maybes’. Everything must be perfect for you. But, every second without you feeds into her restlessness, and she ends up calling you to fill the time. Hours go by on the phone & she still refuses to hang up until she pulls outside your residence.

When she first greets you from the backseat of her car, her hands are on you immediately. She smoothes out the collar of your jacket and peppers a couple of warm kisses all across your face, somehow never quite landing on your lips. She quickly dabs away all the lipstick stamps she left with her handkerchief and apologizes for being so forward,,, only to end up doing it again.

Mary takes high pride in her outfits and never compromises on looking classy. But somewhere in the back of your head, you think: All white? To a wine tasting? What if she gets red stains on her dress? From anyone else, this comment would insult her ― she doesn't take kindly to the insinuation that she's a klutz. Coming from you, she laughs it off saying she's always looked better in red anyway.

She waits until arriving for your tour to present her gifts. Mary gives VERY generously. There's an entire table prepared for you. Mountains of roses, desserts, tickets to that trip you've always wanted to take, luxury spa packages -- she has everything.

♡ Norton

This Valentine's Day is the first Norton will be spending with someone. He'll act like he's not that invested in it, that he's just indulging you.

He keeps up a haughty smirk when you first meet for your date. You had a love letter delivered to him that morning, and he's 100% taking the opportunity to tease you about it. You wrote some pretty embarrassing things about him. How's the real deal living up to your expectations? Dying to bring some of those thoughts to life already? Unfortunately, you insisted on having a traditional date for Valentine's, so you'll have to keep yourself in check until tonight. ← He knows he makes you crazy & he loves having that effect on you.

He gives you chocolates as a gift. They're clearly homemade, shaped like rocks of various sizes with a little gold-dusted heart hidden among them. But just in case you wouldn't be able to recognize them as rocks, he also provided a little toothpick "pickaxe."

Presenting something homemade is a little embarrassing, even if he hides it with that big grin of his. He gives your present a little too fast before switching back to teasing you again.

♡ Philippe

As a perfectionist, Philippe starts planning for Valentine's Day very early. He experiments with all sorts of gift ideas. You're not sure what's going through his head, but he has a highly specific vision and won't rest until he achieves it. He seems to find it important that he gives you something handmade.

Matching photo lockets? A decoden case (if you're into fun phone cases)? Not meaningful enough. A flower vase modeled after his own hand, to sit on your desk? Too tacky. A wax figure? Maybe, but that's too predictable on its own. Maybe he should learn guitar to serenade you.

His final choice is ambitious, but Philippe always is. He builds a little table out of resin, and preserved inside it are your favorite flowers, with detailed wax figurines of you and him dancing among them. It sits in a corner of his favorite room, where he often does dance with you ♡

On the day itself, Philippe would prefer to stay home. It's one of the rare times he gets to have you to himself free of work constraints.

He's the type that always needs to be doing something with his hands. He'd enjoy making chocolate sculptures together -- it's a cute idea, he thinks, to watch you make something so passionately. Whatever your skill level, he loves anything you make.

In the evening, he'll take over all the cooking. A quiet night with steak and good wine (or your preferred drink) is a little cliche, but you both deserve it. Plus, he loves nothing more than casually chatting with you while he works in the kitchen.

♡ Naib

Naib isn't really into the idea of Valentine's Day. He might not even realize it's coming up unless you tell him about it. You'd have to be explicit that you're looking forward to spending the day with him, and even then, he's totally unprepared.

Gifts have never been his forte. Neither have grand romantic gestures. But he's good at working his pragmatic side into the little things: so rather than push himself to be this lovey-dovey, chocolates-and-roses type of lover for the day, he focuses on being 'present' for you.

He brings you breakfast in bed. He's a mean cook, and knows all your favorites. Everything he makes tastes like home, warm and full of love.

Most couples give each other flowers, he knows that, so he goes shopping for one. You're surprised when he presents you with a bouquet of lemons. In his mind, they're cool and refreshing like you, everyone could find a use for some lemons, and personally he finds the colors to be appealing. It doesn't occur to him that lemon bouquets might be an unusual thing to give.

He relies on you to direct the date. Whatever you say, he'll agree. In public, he never leans in for kisses but wouldn't oppose yours. You can try to stand closer to him & he'll slink an arm around your waist briefly, as if to reassure you that he'll always have a secure hold on you, but he'll pull away again before long.

♡ Percy

In spite of all of his eccentricities, Percy is surprisingly traditional when it comes to romance. He invites you to a nice dinner date & arrives much earlier than you, waiting with a bouquet and chocolates. When he first sees you, he wraps a secure arm around your shoulders to tenderly kiss your forehead.

Getting to see this side of him is the payoff of building such a deep relationship with him. Percy is a difficult person to get through. He's obsessive to a fault and cloisters himself away in his studio for days at a time ― no one else would have been able to breach his heart like you have. He will take proper measures to express your importance to him.

His first real kiss leaves tiny particles of something on your lips, but they're sweet in taste. He laughs at the startled look on your face and reassures you it was just a sugar cube. At first he says he was just fishing for a reaction, but later confesses: he was afraid the lips of an undead man might have an odd taste, so he crunched a sugar cube to sweeten it.

♡ Eli

Eli spends the morning delivering roses to other couples on his bicycle. People tend to get especially flattered when their flowers arrive via owl, so his services are very popular this time of year.

He enjoys the little bouts of happiness he can bring to others, but of course you are the one he wants to spend this day with most. With every bouquet he delivers, his mind wanders to you, imagining your reaction when he finally gets to deliver his gift.

He asks you to meet him at an ice cream parlor when his shift is done, around noon. Before you even see him, Brooke Rose flies over to tuck a thornless rose behind your ear, and you turn to find Eli already waiting at a table.

He gives you a small homemade cake and a letter he won't let you read until he's gone. He's a pretty sappy guy even in person, so you aren't sure how his letter will be much different. But having something to be excited about, even after you have to say goodbye, makes it worth it.

His bike rides have left very familiar with all the best spots around town. After splitting ice cream, he takes you for a ride to all the little places he thinks you'll love. A flower meadow, a bridge with a superstition attached: if you whisper the name of your love while crossing it, you'll be bound for life. Part of you suspects he made that up, but the way he says your name over and over makes your heart skip a beat.

Once the sun goes down, he brings you to a forest. Somehow he manages to time it just right. He gestures for you to stay very quiet, gently takes your hands, and suddenly you're encircled by hundreds of fireflies.

♡ Michiko

Since losing her ex-husband, Valentine's Day has become a bitter thing for Michiko, especially since it's so close to their anniversary. She has treated it as a day of mourning for some years. Of course, she keeps up a smile for you ― it's not in her character to impose her struggles on others.

The morning goes by slowly and comfortably. You wake up to a gentle massage and the smell of fresh baked pastries. She writes you a sweet letter in her neat script, and she adorns her letter with pressed flowers & a mini bouquet of your favorite candy.

She makes sure to get you a proper gift, too. She follows a rule of getting 1 indulgent and 1 practical thing: a box of luxury chocolates alongside a fine new coat.

Her ideal date would be something intimate and relaxing. Maybe the theatre, in a box reserved for two, or a shaded flower garden where you can enjoy a cup of tea.

Random Headcanon #1

Gifts You Got The Brothers:

It's the thought that counts. The kind of gift you'd think they wouldn't keep (but they do).

Gifts given after you get to know them well.

Lucifer —

A big, fluffy unicorn plush. You know, the one they made the sticker about? Yeah, he 100% got that from you on your third week in the Devildom. He’ll never admit it, but he cuddles with it at night sometimes.

Demonus-laced, high quality, limited edition chocolates. It cost a small fortune, but Lucifer enjoyed them so much he spoiled you for weeks and turned a blind eye to your more.... bold decisions.  

Mammon

A greeting card you got during one of your first town outings because it struck your interest. Mammon, being the tsundere he is, pretended to not care and said he threw out “the cheap garbage”, but he stares at the flowers on the card sometimes for hours. 

A Gussi leather jacket you managed to get your hands on for his birthday, and he’s become so possessive of it that you’re the only one allowed to touch it aside from him.

Levi

A friendship bracelet you made trying to drag Levi out of his room. You’ve never seen him wear it, but unbeknownst to you he’s been wearing it as an anklet under his sweatpants. 

A Zaramela figurine, of which there is only one in the entire Devildom. Levi broke down and cried for almost an hour hugging you because he was so happy. His brothers are not permitted anywhere near it, else Lotan gets summoned into the House of Lamentation again. 

Satan

In an attempt to give him a better way to manage his anger, you gave him a slime stress ball. He destroyed it within a week, but he was actually pretty upset about it. 

You somehow managed to persuade Lucifer to let him have another chance, and long story short, Satan became the ecstatic father of two cats. You still have to keep him in check and make sure he doesn’t try to adopt more, but he now cannot physically get angry with you. 

Asmo

A fashion magazine for an up and coming model looking to rival him. You didn’t actually know about that last part until Asmo mentioned it, but he thought you were trying to help him, so he now wears all of the fashions of his opposition. 

Bath salts that leave the body perfectly energized and glittering—it’s the absolute perfect skincare routine wrapped up in relaxation, and Asmo savors every bath like his last, frequently inviting you to join in the process. 

Beel

A dieting guide—you’d think he would have eaten it, laminated pages and all, but every time you enter his room, you find it open to a different page. 

A gargantuan devildom feast from various restaurants, with an array of food ranging from cheeseburgers to cakes. You weren’t sure whether it was the quantity or the fact that you finished it off with a bag of homemade cookies, but Beel was actually full. 

Belphie

A traditional alarm clock he never uses, but for some reason has never moved it from its spot. He said he was too lazy, but you’ve seen him fiddling with it from time to time when he thinks you’re not looking. 

An extraordinary telescope that was recently developed for observing the anomaly between the human and Devildom skies, and Belphie absolutely could not stop himself from openly cuddling you for days.

Prefers crunchy snacks

A moka type of guy.

Needs to have something sweet after dinner or else he feels like the day isn't over

Loves Sanrio characters. Hello Kitty, My Melody and Cinnamonroll are his favorites

Cracks his knuckles and neck constantly. Sounds super loud and concerning ("dude you ok?" Is usually what he hears after)

Gives the tightest most secure hugs

Finds ASMR relaxing but dislikes slime videos

Drinks A LOT of water and is reminding his brothers (mostly Donnie and Mikey) to stay hydrated

LEO

Likes chewy candy and lollipops. Go-to candy is Starbursts

Iced caramel macchiato guy. Will try seasonal drinks as long as they're iced. Only has hot drinks at night, it's like his little ritual

Takes forever to get ready for the night. Has a 10 step skincare routine that he is very diligent about

o After almost losing Pinocchio and being put through so much worry, he's gotten more protective of him. (And Pinocchio doesn't mind it)

(He's not overprotective or a helicopter parent, he just wants to make sure Pinocchio's safe.)

o He really loves dark chocolate and bittersweet desserts; he also likes sweets filled with fruit

o He playfully teases Pinocchio often. He and pinocchio playfully banter with each other.

o (this is technically canon but idrc) He's not just a woodcarver, but a craftsman in general. He makes mugs, bottles, bowls and plates, and figurines from ceramic; he sews clothing for dolls and toys, carves furniture and dishes, and, of course, he makes toys (and not just from wood. He sews stuffed animals like teddy bears and ragdolls). And he also makes model ships in glass jars (which is actually seen in some concept art sketches)

o His full name is Geppetto Christian Lorenzini (Christian is obviously a reference to Christian Rub, Geppetto's voice actor)

o Geppetto's glasses are reading glasses, I don't think he actually needs them and he can see just fine without them, he's just gotten so used to wearing them that he forgets to take them off. (He's very absent-minded, after all)

My trip to Japan! ⛩️ Part 5 (last)

The winter solstice made an entrance with a very cold day. Getting out of Osaka station was fortunately much easier than it seemed on Google Maps, and we found our hotel easily. We left our luggage and went straight to the castle. The current one is the third iteration, rebuilt in 1970 after being destroyed twice in the 17th century, when it was first built. Therefore, at 53 years old, this version is actually the longest-standing one. Inside, it's a museum, not a castle, but it was interesting, unexpensive, and the views from the top are fantastic. What impressed me the most, however, was the double moat, huge and full of water. There were even boat rides around it (we didn't ride, but they were there).

We then went to the Namba district, where I had marked a restaurant that had an Attack on Titan collaboration, but it was over. We had lunch in a US-style burger restaurant. In fact, next to Namba there’s this area called Amerika-mura, with many shops of American items or aesthetics. Lots of hip-hop style clothing. It's worth mentioning that the commercial density of Osaka is similar to Tokyo; every building is a shopping center, and there are several covered pedestrian streets as well. Walking around,  we reached Dotonbori, Osaka's entertainment district around the canal of the same name, and went on to a street with several manga and anime shops. I had already browsed some in the previous cities and everywhere, here too, there was little to nothing on AoT. Only a handful of 2nd hand, 2nd rate keychains/badges featuring none of my blorbos (sorry Jean, I love you, but not as much as to buy merch with your horseface on it). Still, I managed to find a tiny string bag from the Sanrio collabo and a couple gachas.

For those who don’t know, gachapon are coin-operated machines that dispense a plastic capsule with a surprise inside. Like a Kinder egg, minus the egg. Each gachapon has a picture showing the trinkets you can get in that machine: small character figurines from a given franchise, or a collection of figurines following a certain theme, or a certain character in various positions; keychains, stickers, totebags... anything and everything. And when I say everything, I mean everything. Japanese Rule 34: If it exists, there's a gachapon of it. The variety of themes and objects you can get from a gachapon is as overwhelming as the commercial streets of the country. Every tourist attraction has some related gachapon. In castles, there are gachas of samurai figures, tiny swords, or pins with emblems of Japan's feudal houses; near zoos, there are ones with animals. In commercial areas, there are entire gacha shops, some with several floors. Some of these shops include a container for recycling the empty plastic capsules, and all of them have a change machine, since gachapon only accept ¥100 coins. The price for gachas usually range from ¥200 to ¥500, with a majority at ¥300-¥400, although there are some "premium" ones up to ¥1000. All good, but I'm not willing to pay so much for a surprise.

In this regard, gachas are not alone: buying surprises seems to be something very deeply ingrained and popular in Japan. Many brands sell surprise products. You buy a little box, an acrylic figure, a little doll, but you don't know which model out of the available ones you'll get. In several shops there are products that aren’t for sale; they're tombola prizes. You buy a number at the counter, you get one of those items. While, as Husband observed, we’re not privvy to the exchange rings generated by this business model, not so conceptually different from the stickers we collected as kids or Kinder Eggs themselves, the profusion of surprises really took me by surprise (no pun intended), both for its ubiquity and for the prices, which can exceed ¥1000, and you don't even get a chocolate egg to console yourself if, as it happened to me twice, you get stupid Eren.

For dinner, we did manage to go to an okonomiyaki place that had an AoT collaboration. Usually, collabo places aren’t particularly good places, food-wise. They offer a menu of dishes "inspired" by whatever franchise they’re featuring, and if you spend more than a certain amount, they give you a souvenir like a card or sticker, a surprise, of course. You also have the chance to buy exclusive merchandise made specially for that collaboration. Again, many of these items are surprises. In short, the food was decent, I got my photo with Levi’s cut-out, and got a little card of him, too.

After breakfast, we took the Shinkansen to Himeji. The city's 17th-century castle, which has remained intact until today, is a UNESCO World Heritage site. Himeji Castle was defensive; it's not a palace, although it may look like one from the outside. Still, it's fabulous to see what a castle was like during that time in Japan (the defensive systems are very similar to European ones. As someone who hates the cold, I was pleasantly surprised by the arrow slits with replaceable covers). It's also mindblowing that this megastructure, mainly made of wood and adobe, is still standing after three centuries.

A few years ago, for maintenance, they dismantled it... and reassembled it entirely… with the same 300 y.o. pieces. The two main columns are two logs almost a meter in diameter and 25 metres long, going from the basement to the 5th floor. The views from the top are beautiful. The visit included a stroll through the neighbouring Japanese gardens. Here, there's a very cute restaurant with views over one of the many ponds in the gardens, which, oh joy, had very reasonable prices, so being already noon, we had lunch there. We returned to Osaka, and after coffee we decided to go our separate ways so each could shop to their heart’s content until dinner. I checked a few merch shops for AoT stuff, no luck.

⬆️ This comic book shop had a lot of dedicated doodles. I looked all over twice and Yams wasn't there, but I did find some other familiar faces.

We’d planned to meet in Shinsekai, but Husband got there first and said it was pretty dead, so we met in Namba and went to Dotonbori for dinner. We had takoyaki and kushikatsu, a local specialty consisting of breaded and fried skewers. I also ordered a beef cartilage stew, it was delicious and, funnily, it sort of tasted like fricandó, one of my favourite typical Catalan dishes back home.

We woke up early to catch the Shinkansen back to Tokyo. We left our luggage at the hotel (the same one as on arrival), and here I had a great disappointment because we planned to have a mid-morning snack at a nearby place, Hekkelun, which has been selling flan since the sixties. I don't know if I saw the schedule wrong on Google or if they changed it in the ten days we were touring the rest of Japan, but it was closed on the weekend. It made me very angry because I was really looking forward to it and, had I known, we would obviously have gone in the first Tokyo cour. I needed to cheer myself up, so after a tea in front of Shinbashi station, we passed by the NTV building, where there’s a beautiful clock designed by Hayao Miyazaki.

We arrived just in time to see the movement at 12, which was, of course, super cute. We then went to the Hama-Rikyu park. It used to be the shogun's gardens and includes things like ancient tea rooms; a seawater pond, as it’s next to the bay; and duck-hunting ponds, an activity which seems to have been very popular back in the day. Using real trained ducks as bait, they led the birds to narrow corners of the pond with camouflaged huts on both sides from where they hunted them. We returned to Shinbashi for lunch and stumbled upon an inconspicuous sushi place in the basement of the station, where we ate amazing susi for almost half of what takeaway costs here. We decided to go our separate ways like in Osaka, to cover more ground. I checkedd a couple of cute stationery shops I’d bookmarked and went all the way to Shibuya to check the Attack on Titan pop-up shop (it opened on the 22nd, so it wasn't there in the first part).

Finally! I got decent merchandise (plus surprise cards for spending a lot my purchase).

There was supposed to be a collabo café nearby, but I had enough “surprises” and Shibuya was horribly crowded. I would’ve expected that a weekday at 6pm, not a Saturday at 4. I met Husband in Akihabara, where we looked at some merch stores (found nothing), had something at a cat cafe (pretty shitty, but the cats were cute), and had dinner at a nearby place.

We both woke up ridiculously early, so we had breakfast at McDonald's (the only thing open at 6 am where you could sit) and went to Meiji Jingu. It's a Shinto shrine in Harajuku where Emperor Meiji and his wife, Empress Shoken, are enshrined as deities. Emperor Meiji opened Japan to the world in the mid-19th century, ending two and a half centuries of isolation during the Edo era. It’s beautiful, well-maintained and free. There is a small fee for the gardens, that we also visited. These were the emperor's gardens; there's a closed tea house from where the empress would gaze at the lake, with a small pier for fishing. There's also a lily field (barren since it was the middle of winter ofc) with a gazebo to contemplate the blossoming. This field was planted in what was once a rice paddy, where the children of noblefolk were made to work in ancient times to understand the labour than went into rice cultivation and appreciate the food they had.

From there, we went to the ukiyo-e museum a couple of blocks away. It was small but very interesting, with lots of insight into this technique, the one from Hokusai’s famous "The Great Wave off Kanagawa". We ate at a nearby place, Kyushu Jangara: the ramen was excellent, with its tonkotsu broth, soft-boiled egg, and the comforting feeling that a proper bowl of soup brings on a cold winter noon. We took a stroll through Harajuku; it was so full it was a challenge to walk through the pedestrian street. We then walked down the main avenue, full of fancy brands, to Omotesando Station, where we took the metro to Tokyo Station. Here is Character Street, a gallery of character shops. I’d heard it was expensive, it wasn’t so good, yada yada yada… well, here I did get more AoT stuff, including Sanrio items.

I stopped by the hotel to drop off the purchases, and we met at the KFC in Shinbashi to buy our "Japanese Christmas Eve dinner." The tradition, born from a 1970s advertisement, is to have KFC for dinner on this day. Despite what the decorations might suggest, Christmas is not celebrated here. They’re just into it for the aesthetics.

It was our last night in Japan, but not our last adventure! Around 11pm, right before getting into bed, we got an email saying our flight was canceled. Wham!

Needless to say, we slept like shit, and at six, we were already awake. Husband chatted with Lufthansa, and they rebooked us on a flight two hours earlier than the original one, so we got dressed and rushed to the airport. Every cloud has a silver lining, though, and I was thrilled when we got to ride on the LTS monorail! See you, Japan!

Henderhop is Endgame: Part I

Note: This post was drafted before Stranger Things 4 was released.

Byler, Lumax, and Henderhop are (what i believe to be) the endgame ships of the Party. I'm not going to do any analysis in this post; this is meant merely to be a compilation of interactions between El and Dustin (including canon evidence for the idea that Henderhop is endgame).

There are quite literally thousands of posts on Lumax (Lucas/Max) and Byler (Will/Mike), but comparatively few about the likelihood of Henderhop. Admittedly, El and Dustin have more obviously a friendship than a romance going on, but that doesn't mark off the possibility of a slow burn!

This is Part I of a series!

[DISCLAIMER: I'm not ignoring Suzie- or Mike- for the sake of Henderhop.]

Season 1

Chapter 1: "The Vanishing of Will Byers"

Chapter 2: "The Weirdo on Maple Street"

Dustin's first words to El: "Where's your hair? Do you have cancer?"

Dustin understandably is curious as to where El came from, why her head is shaved, etc. whereas Mike just wants to know if she can help them find Will. See? Already, we have Dustin being curious about El, whereas Mike just cares about Will. Dustin doesn't even know this girl- but he wants to get to know her; Mike literally just wants to get rid of her until he realizes she can help them find Will.

Dustin and Lucas converse when Mike is skipping school; Dustin wonders if El slept naked, which annoys Lucas.

"We never would've upset you if we knew you had superpowers."

El holds up the wizard figurine and says "Will"- Dustin comments in awe: "Superpowers".

Chapter 3: "Holly, Jolly"

Dustin brought snacks- "energy for our travels". Dustin is VERY IMPRESSED with El's powers. Dustin asks El to make Mike's model Millennium Falcon fly, which makes Mike snap, "She's not a dog!"

Dustin continues to be intrigued, wondering if El's powers were acquired or if she was born with them.

Chapter 4: "The Body"

"Will's body" was found, but El finds proof that Will is alive. Dustin continues to be impressed with El's powers- less skeptical than Lucas.

The boys give El a makeover, and she comes out of the bathroom after changing. "Wow. She looks..." Dustin remarks, before Mike says "Pretty." and Dustin GRINS in genuine delight.

Dustin is a good friend, lying to protect El.

Chapter 5: "The Flea and the Acrobat"

Dustin asks Lucas, "You're asking if the weirdo is acting weird?" - to this Lucas clarifies weirder than normal. - to which Dustin responds, rather unromantically "I don't know. Who cares?"

Dustin mediates between Lucas and Mike, not really defending El. Again, not evidence for Henderhop- rather the opposite- but i'm pointing it out for the sake of acknowledging that this is a slowburn.

Chapter 6: "The Monster"

Dustin & Mike go to Lucas' house. Mike says that El is "one of us, now". Dustin admits that El throwing Lucas with her mind was "a little awesome".

"Our friend has superpowers, and she squeezed your tiny bladder with her mind!" Troy & James run away in fear. "She's our friend and she's crazy! You come back and she'll kill you!"

Mike hugs El, and Dustin hugs both of them:

Chapter 7: "The Bathtub"

"Did... did you see what she did to that van?" (Mike responds sarcastically, "No, Dustin, we missed it.")

Chapter 8: "The Upside Down"

"Mike, look at her," Dustin says regarding El's exhaustion; her powers won't work. Dustin goes to get chocolate pudding- El "needs to recharge". When he returns with the chocolate pudding, Dustin tells El, "This will charge your battery right up, I'm telling you."

El kills 5 agents and collapses. Dustin picks her up and carries her through the halls.

After El destroys the demogorgon and vanishes, Dustin is the first to look up.

Age- 18 (immortal)

Location- The Underworld

Personality- Thanatos can be stoic, introverted, and apathetic at times. When performing his duties, he's known to be merciful (to those who deserve it). Aside from his boss Hades and the other gods that inhabit the Underworld, he doesn't care much for the other gods in the pantheon. He has a dry sense of humor and is very protective of his sisters. He’s single.

He has the standard abilities of a god. As the god of death, his powers/abilities include pain manipulation, sensing people's life and death auras, and umbrakinesis- controlling darkness & shadows. He also has the power of flight, his glittering black wings resembling those of a moth's. His natural scent is similar to embalming fluid.

In the Underworld, Thanatos lives in a condo past the shores of the river Lethe, a few miles away from his twin brother Hypnos (god of sleep) who he’s very close with. He keeps in storage a tall adamantine scythe that has a sharp Stygian Iron blade- which was designed & forged by Hades. On his front door, there's an inverted torch. Inside, the primary colors are black, dark violet, and cobalt. There's leather furniture & butterfly/moth motifs everywhere.

As a child he used to be ghastly afraid of his older sister Keres (goddess of violent death). He also hated being her unofficial "punching bag", her making fun of him at every chance. Now, their sibling rivalry has mellowed out a bit.

Thanatos plays the drums in the band Death Theater along with Hades, Hypnos, and his older brother Charon.

In his down time, Thanatos enjoys many things like photography (he takes pictures for the Underworld travel brochure for tourists), lava surfing amongst the ruins of Tartarus, ice hockey, poker, basketball, reading, playing video games, sword fighting, carving adamantine figurines, and cooking.

He once spent an entire year getting high with his brothers- with them smoking pot laced with black opium!

Thanatos has a seat on Hades' council.

He loves cooking with his mother Nyx- his favorite meal being her delicious beef patties, hot pepper soup, sweet potato pie, and baked pastitsio with extra pepper jack cheese.

He also looks up to Phlegethon (Titan god of fire), Cocytus (Titan god of wailing & lamentation), and Acheron (Titan god of pain) as male role models aside from his father. He's also friendly with Despoina (goddess of the arcadian mysteries, frost, winter, & shadows) and Lykos (goddess of wolves). Thanatos was mentored by Iapetus (Titan god of mortality, pain, & death).

As far as romantic relationships go, Thanatos claims he's too busy for a serious relationship. He has gone on a date with one of The Furies, Alecto and he has an unrequited crush on Hecate (goddess of magic & witchcraft). He also used to have a crush on Clotho- one of The Moirai.

He despises Sisyphus, though he does sympathize with the plight of Merope (Sisyphus' wife & their kids). Thanatos also dislikes Asclepius.

Thanatos is the owner of several funeral homes throughout the country and crematoriums as well as a company that makes caskets and urns- for cremated individuals. He also has his own merch line, which include graphic tees.

I am not generally capable of writing lately, but I do want to tell this story for some reason.

We’re in a nondescript town in Western Germany in the late 1940s to early 1950s. It’s one of those places where normal people work and live and die, too small to be called big and too big to be called small. It has some industry and is vital enough to host a flock of American Soldiers, but it wasn’t vital enough to be destroyed in the war.

People who live there are still afraid of the strangers that are there now. The Americans hand out chocolate for the children and cigarettes to the men, but the children are told not to take anything from them, it might be poisoned. Eventually the soldiers give up and leave the town’s people to themselves.

One of those children is a little girl. She’s a bit shy and often plays by herself, but she is loved by her family very much. Her Mother is her safe haven from her older, rowdy siblings, and she plays piano to her young daughter every day. Her father hosts dinners for his friends in the living room. They are loud and they smoke cigars that smell so bad our little girl gets sick from the smell, but he is always kind to her and answers all her silly questions. He’s an artist and works on a big and imporatnt sculptures that will end up in the town’s square soon, but when little Suse wants to know how he turns a wax model into a bronze figurine he will stop his work and explain. On saturdays, she is brought to her Aunt to be watched, so the adults can be among themselves. Aunt Ria is Suses Favorite person in the world. She wears beautiful dresses and her apartment is decorated so nicely. She has a drawer full of silk handkerchiefs, embroidered with flowers and birds and patterns. Suse is allowed to play with them — if she promises to fold them up neatly again afterwards. Suse loves beautiful things, and she takes such good care of the silk Aunt Ria will sometimes give her one of the simpler pieces as a gift to take home with her.

It’s a hard life, in many ways. It’s cold in winter, there’s only a fireplace and a smaller fire under the stove, and when they wake up in winter they can see their breath cloud in front of them. There are ice flowers on the window, and the father shows little Suse how to cut a folded piece of paper into stars that look just like them. There is little money, but the father saves up for months and buys his wife a record player for christmas. They invite their friends to listen to the first record they own together: A recording of Telemann’s Christmas Cantatas.

Noone they know has a TV, but there is an electronics shop that sometimes puts benches in front of their window so the citizens can watch big world events on the TV displayed there. It’s without sound, but the benches are full each time. That summer, there is a big ceremony from England. Suse watches a young woman between a lot of older men. They all wear strange clothes. It’s black and white and grainy, but she can still make out the glitter of the crown jewels.

When they get home, Suse asks her Father about the Crown. He tells her about the biggest diamonds in the world, and about the delicate assembly of gold and silver that holds them, and about the hard work of the Goldsmiths that crafted those pieces. Suse asks him if she could make the crown for the next Queen, if she would be a Goldsmith when she grows up. “Yes, of course you could,” he tells her. “Then I want to become a Goldsmith.”

That little girl grows up to be my mother. And although she of course never made a Crown, she did indeed become a Goldsmith, and like her father she also said “yes, you could, if you want,” to all of her kids’ crazy dreams. She saw the Crown Jewels for the first in 2014 when she visited me in London and I got to take her to visit the Tower.

Regardless of what your personal feelings are towards monarchy, it’s the end of an age for sure. Time is merciless and change inevitable, and today I think of my Mother, and her life, and the things she witnessed.
