It was your birthday, and as usual, you didn’t have any special plans. Growing up, your family had never really made a big deal out of birthdays, and now that you were on your own, the day often passed without much fanfare. But this year, things were a little different.
You shared a small apartment with your boyfriend, Anakin, a brilliant but socially awkward computer science major who you’d met in one of your classes. Anakin was hopelessly in love with you, and he had made it his mission to shower you with affection and attention, even when you protested that you didn’t need or want to be spoiled.
As you walked through the front door of your shared apartment, you stopped short, eyes widening in surprise. The entire place was decorated with streamers, balloons, and a large “Happy Birthday!”banner hung across the living room wall. Soft music filled the air, and the aroma of something delicious wafted in from the kitchen.
“Anakin?” you called out, your voice laced with confusion and a touch of panic. “What's going on?”
Suddenly, Anakin appeared from the kitchen, a wide grin plastered across his face. He was wearing a silly party hat and holding a cupcake with a single lit candle.
“Surprise!” he exclaimed, practically bouncing with excitement. “Happy birthday, Y/N!”
You stared at him, mouth agape, as he approached you, holding the cupcake out towards you.
“I…I don't understand,” you stammered, your eyes darting around the room. “You didn't have to do all this, honey.”
Anakin’s face fell slightly, and he paused, his brow furrowing in concern. “But I wanted to,” he said softly, his blue eyes searching your face. “I know how much you hate making a big deal out of your birthday, but I just…I wanted to do something special for you, to show you how much you mean to me.”
You felt your heart swell with emotion, and before you could stop yourself, you felt tears welling up in your eyes. Anakin’s face fell further, and he quickly set the cupcake down on a nearby table, reaching out to take your hands in his.
“Hey, hey, what’s wrong?” he asked, his voice laced with worry. “Did I do something wrong? I’m sorry, I just thought–”
You shook your head quickly, squeezing his hands reassuringly. “No, no, Anakin, it’s not that at all,” you said, your voice soft. “It’s just…no one’s ever done anything like this for me before.”
Anakin's expression softened, and he reached up to gently wipe away a stray tear from your cheek. “Well, that’s about to change,” he said, a small smile tugging at the corners of his lips. “Because from now on, I’m going to do everything in my power to make sure you never have another birthday without feeling special.”
You felt a fresh wave of tears threatening to spill over, and you surged forward, wrapping your arms around Anakin’s torso and burying your face in his chest. He immediately enveloped you in a warm, comforting embrace, holding you close as you let the tears flow.
“Thank you, Anakin,” you murmured, your voice thick with emotion. “I love you so much.”
“I love you too, babe,” he whispered, pressing a gentle kiss to the top of your head. “And I’m never going to stop showing you how much you mean to me.”
After a few moments, you pulled back, wiping at your eyes with a sheepish smile. “Okay, so what else do you have planned for my birthday celebration?” you asked, your voice light and teasing.
Anakin’s face lit up, and he practically bounced on the balls of his feet. “Well, since you asked…” he said, grinning mischievously. “I made your favorite dinner, and I have a whole stack of your favorite movies ready to go. And of course, we can’t forget the cake!”
He dashed back into the kitchen, returning a moment later with a beautifully decorated cake, complete with your name written in icing. He set it down on the coffee table, then turned to you, his eyes shining with excitement.
“And that’s not all!” he exclaimed, reaching into his pocket and pulling out a small, neatly wrapped present. “I have a gift for you, too.”
You felt your heart skip a beat as he handed you the package, and you carefully unwrapped it, your eyes widening as you revealed a beautiful silver necklace, with a delicate pendant in the shape of a flower, your favorite one at that.
“Anakin, it’s…it’s beautiful,” you breathed, running your fingers over the intricate design.
He beamed, reaching out to gently clasp the necklace around your neck. “I saw it and thought of you,” he said softly, his fingers lingering on the pendant. “It’s a little reminder for you,” he gently points a finger at your chest. “to always know how brilliant and amazing you are.”
You felt the tears welling up again, and this time, you didn’t bother trying to hold them back. Anakin’s face fell again, and he immediately pulled you into another tight hug.
“Hey, what’s wrong?” he asked, his voice laced with concern. “Was it something I said?”
You shook your head, burying your face in the crook of his neck. “No, Anakin, you didn’t do anything wrong,”you assured him, your voice a little muffled. “These are happy tears, I promise.”
You felt him relax, and he pressed a gentle kiss to your temple.
“Good,” he murmured, his voice filled with relief. “Because I never want to be the cause of your tears, Y/N. I just want to make you happy, always.”
You pulled back, gazing up at him with a warm, loving smile. “You already do, Anakin,” you said softly. “More than you’ll ever know.”
With that, you pulled him in for a deep, passionate kiss, your hands tangling in his messy curls as you savored the feeling of his lips on yours. When you finally broke apart, you were both beaming, your foreheads resting together.
“Happy birthday, baby,” Anakin whispered, his breath ghosting over your lips.
“Thank you, Ani,” you murmured, your heart overflowing with love and gratitude. “This is the best birthday I’ve ever had.”
And as the two of you embraced, surrounded by the festive decorations and the delicious scent of Anakin's homemade cooking, you knew that this was only the beginning of a lifetime of birthdays and celebrations spent together, making memories and building a future filled with love and happiness.

Secret Santa | Bucky Barnes (5th Day of 🎄)
Tumblr media
(Credits to the owner of this pic!)
We’re almost half way there! I hope I’m not boring you guys 😅 ya girl had a lot of fun writing this one!
Christmas Masterlist <- check out my other holiday fics!
~~~~
Christmas is one of the most wonderful times of the year. It’s a time to be with family, friends and the people who love you. It’s a time where people give back to those in need. It’s a time where the world seems like there’s magic in the air.
It’s also a time where one can express their true feelings towards a special someone.
Though that seems like it’s easier said than done.
My fear of rejection has always held me back ever since I first met you. You have always been so constant and loyal and patient and loving… It's no wonder why I fell for you. You are a true beauty, anyone with common sense could see that. I’ve been waiting for the perfect opportunity to tell you how I feel ever since I realized how important you became to me.
Every year, Tony likes to throw a big Christmas party filled with multiple people who I don’t really care so much for, if I’m being completely honest. Soon right after that event, he’ll throw a small one reserved for family and friends only. There, is where we have our annual Secret Santa and every year I’ve been waiting to draw up your name.
This year, I finally did.
I held onto your box carefully in my hand, making sure I don’t accidentally misplace it while I anxiously fidgeted with my free one as I looked for you in the small crowd. I spotted Steve and Nat chatting at the mini bar while she served him a drink. Bruce was too busy talking to Tony about some new science experiment he’s been working on and wanted his input. Sam chatted away with Thor while playing a losing game of darts against Clint. Why he chose to go against him, I’ll never know.
It seemed like everywhere I looked, the one person I wanted to see wasn’t there. I bit my bottom lip as my eyes continued to search around the room.
“She’s not here yet.”
“Yeah, I know I just – …” I looked to my right and saw Wanda standing next to me, a knowing smile on her face. “Who are you talking about?” She just chuckled and raised a quick eyebrow. “You know who.. Sorry, I couldn’t help it. Your thoughts were just so loud and I had to come over and help quiet them down.”
I bowed my head in embarrassment. “Sorry.” She shook her head. “Don’t be. It’s kinda cute seeing the White Wolf fawn over a girl.” My head lifted back up quickly as she continued. “We never get to see this side of Bucky. It’s a nice pace from the constant brooding and staring contests you and Sam get into.”
“We do not – ”
“Yes you do, but that’s besides the point. Your girl isn’t here yet so I took the liberty of calling her and asking where she was before coming to talk to you. She’s a few minutes away.” She gave me a small smile as I returned one back to her. “So um with that being said.. how long have you..?”
She held her hand up to stop me from talking. “A while. You’re not exactly quiet or subtle with your thoughts.” My face must’ve been crimson red as she just laughed. “Oh my God..” I covered my face with my hand and shook my head. “I am so sorry about that.. um.. you – you haven’t – ”
“Don’t worry, Bucky. I haven’t told anyone, so your secret is safe with me.” She made a motion of locking her lips with her fingers and throwing away the key. “It’s not mine to tell anyway.”
“Thank you.”
She glanced around the room and softly hummed to herself. My thoughts must’ve been too loud and now I’m just paranoid at how long she has heard me. “I didn’t say anything before because one, I wanted to spare you the embarrassment and two, I was too busy freaking out about the fact that you’re in love with my best friend and I’ve been wanting you two to get together since forever.”
I laughed at the absurdity and held your gift close to my chest. “I’m not sure what to say. I’m embarrassed either way.” She turned her head towards the entrance and smiled. “You should fix your tie, Mr. Barnes. Ms. Y/L/N is straight ahead.” I followed her gaze and felt the literal wind get knocked out of me.
There you stood in a dark red dress that hugged your curves perfectly. The v-neck accentuating your assets in the best way possible and the way your hips swayed side to side as you walked more confidently my way made my brain short circuit. You look absolutely breathtaking. “You got this, Bucky. I’m rooting for you.” Wanda spoke as she left my side to meet you halfway to greet you in a hug.
I watched as the two of you started a short conversation. My gaze drifted up and down your figure. You seemed to outshine all of Tony’s expensive decorations as you chatted away with your friend. I guess you seemed to notice the way my feet were glued to the floor and you suddenly made your way in front of me.
“Hey, you.” You smiled and opened your arms, your gift bag swinging back and forth in your hand. “Hey, doll.” I smiled and embraced you in my arms, your perfume overwhelming my senses and becoming intoxicating. I want to dive my face deeper into your neck until I can figure out that sweet scent of yours.
God, what is it you wear that makes you smell so heavenly?
Pulling away, I noticed the gift in your hand. I motioned over to the bag and asked, “Who’s it for?” You lifted it up and proudly smiled to yourself. “Okay, don’t tell, but it’s for Thor. For a guy who’s so easily amused by everything, it was surprisingly difficult to find something.” You looked down at the box in my hand and pointed. “How about you? Who’s your secret Santa?”
“Uhh haha it’s.. It’s a secret.” I watched as your mouth hung open in surprise and couldn’t help but chuckle. “What? That’s not fair! I told you who I got.”
“That’s on you for answering! The whole point of a Secret Santa is to keep it a secret.” You rolled your eyes and crossed your arms above your chest. “I can keep a secret!” I hummed and shook my head. “Apparently you can’t.” I laughed and looked down at the box in my hand. “And besides, this gift is going to someone really.. special.”
I missed the way your face slightly fell by me being too busy looking at the gift that’s actually meant for you. “Well, I’m sure whoever it is, will love it.” Noticing the slight change in your tone, I glanced up and saw you smile up at me. “I know I would.” I could feel my heart wanting to beat out of my chest at the thought of you opening your gift and you finally realizing how I feel.
I quickly glanced at the box and debated if I should just tell you that it’s yours, before Thor made his way over to us and greeted you in a giant bear hug. “Miss Y/N! You finally made it!” You laughed in his embrace as you hugged him back. “I was beginning to think you would be too late to try any of the Asgardian deserts I brought with me. The tiny human of ants seems to enjoy them.’
“Oh, well if Scott is eating, I better quickly grab something before it’s all gone.” You smiled as you turned your attention back to me. “I’ll see you later?” I nodded and smiled, raising my hand up as if to say ‘go’. “Yeah, sure. Of course. You’ll know where to find me.” She nodded and followed after Thor. “Of course, I can’t help myself too and have eaten more than I’d like to say.”
“Okay, now I definitely need to grab something before you eat the rest!” Your laughter faded away as I stayed rooted in place. I know you’re friends with everyone here and I would never tell you who you can and can’t hang out with, but a selfish part of me just wanted one evening where we wouldn’t be interrupted and I could just tell you everything. The weight of the box in my hand suddenly felt heavier than before.
I sighed and made my way over to the mini bar. I sat the present on the counter next to me and looked up at Nat. “What’ll ya have, soldier?” She asked and raised an eyebrow. “Just a beer, thanks.” I leaned my head against my hand as I kept my gaze on the counter. She placed the opened bottle in front of me and I reached for it and took a swing.
“You doin’ alright there?” She asked once I placed the glass bottle down. “Mmm..”
“Very talkative tonight, are we?” She sighed and placed her hands on the counter, leaning forward. “What’s up?” I met her gaze and sat up. “Nothin’. Nothin’ I just.. it’s nothing.”
“Doesn’t seem like nothing.” She stated and tilted her head to the side. “Does your brooding have anything to do with a certain long red dressed girl sharing a whatever that is Thor brought?” I pinched my eyebrows together. “What are you talking about?”
“Your crush on Y/N.” She said simply as if it was the most obvious thing in the world. “How do you know about that? Wanda swore she wouldn’t tell anyone!”
“She didn’t.”
“I didn’t.”
I heard two different voices at the same time as Wanda sat down on the seat next to me and Nat stood, smirking. “I figured it out on my own.”
“Oh c’mon..” I groaned and took another gulp of my beer. “You, sir, outed yourself.” Wanda spoke while holding her hands up as if to say it’s not her fault.
“So, now that that’s established, I’m gonna go out on a wild limb here and say that based on how close you’re keeping that gift box of yours near you, she’s your Secret Santa?”
“Nat, please, don’t overanalyze me. It’s bad enough Wanda knows my exact thoughts on how I feel. I don’t need you to tease me about it.”
“Hey, I’m not Tony or Sam. I won’t tease you about it ‘til the end of the earth” She joked. “I know how to keep my mouth shut.” I looked to my side and saw Thor’s arms around you, clearly enjoying and thanking you for your gift as you smiled against him. Seeing how happy you looked with him made me second guess if I should just quickly run out to go find something else to give you.
What if my gift was too personal?
“You have nothing to worry about, Buck. Trust me. Because it’ll be from you, I just know we’ll be hearing about it for weeks.”
That’s kind of what I’m afraid of.
Wanda nudged my shoulder and smiled. “C’mon Barnes, Steve told us how much of a charmer you were back in the days. You tellin’ us you can’t sweet talk our Y/N and show her your fun flirty side that I know is deep down inside?”
I chuckled nervously and shook my head. “Heh I – I don’t know. It’s been a long time since I’ve asked someone out on a date.”
They both shared a look that made me feel like I was out of the loop on some kind of inside joke. They seemed to be having a whole conversation in their heads as I sat in between them. Nat's eyes motioned over to me as Wanda tilted her head at me and I suddenly felt like I was being watched and very much exposed.
“You know, you’re both acting as if I can’t tell you’re talking about me.” I raised an eyebrow as Nat waved me off. I chuckled to myself and brought your present closer to me. I know my gift isn’t much and I might make a fool out of myself, but it was give me so much pride to see you show off –
“She won’t reject you.” I looked up at Wanda and furrowed my eyebrows together. “Just.. trust me. She won’t turn you away, in fact she might be very flattered and is dying for you to do something and, oh I don’t know.. make a move?” My eyes slightly widened as I looked back and forth between her and Nat as she just nodded her head.
My gaze found you leaving Thor’s arms and walking over to the back door, opening it and disappearing behind it. “Merry Christmas, Bucky.” Wanda said as I stood up, getting ready to go towards you before stopping my movements as something clicked in my head.
“You..?” She nodded her head. “I couldn’t figure out what to physically give you and I couldn’t go another day hearing you two pine over each other. So I thought of the next best thing, giving you the confidence to go get your girl is the best gift I could give you.” I gave her a smile as she swatted her hand back and forth as if to push me away and laughed. “I can’t wait another minute. Go!”
I quickly grabbed your present and started walking backwards. I couldn’t wipe the smile off of my face. “Thank you, Wanda! I owe you big time!” She waved me off as I turned around and made my way towards the door you just walked out of a few moments ago.
I firmly held the box in my hand and took a deep breath. I reached for the door handle and opened it, leaving the warm atmosphere of people chatting away while soft Christmas music played in the background and followed you outside.
The sound of the door opening and closing caught your attention as you quickly turned to see who now stood out here in the open with you. “Bucky.” You smiled at me. “What are you doing out here?”
“I could ask you the same thing..” I slowly walked closer and noticed small goosebumps on your skin as you tried to ignore the cold air. You hugged yourself, trying to keep warm as the wind blew your hair away from your face. “.. Coming out here without a jacket. Don’t you know how cold New York gets during winter?”
I unbuttoned my jacket as you shook your head, holding your hand up as if to stop me. “Bucky, no. I’m fine, really.” I slipped off my sleeve and switched the present to the opposite hand to slip off the remaining sleeve. “Mm-mmm, if my momma could see me now and see that I didn’t offer up my jacket to a beautiful girl to keep warm, she’d smack me on the back of my head and tell me off.” I chuckled and placed my blazer on top of your shoulders.
You brought it closer to your body and softly smiled at me. I can’t quite tell if the pink on your cheeks is from me or the cold, but I’d like to think it had somethin’ to do with what I just did. I couldn’t help the giddy feeling I had in the pit of my stomach of you wearing something of mine. “Thank you, but you didn’t have to do that.”
“I wanted to.”
“What if you get cold?”
“Doll, don’t you worry about me one bit. I’ll be okay, I promise you.”
We both smiled at each other as you gripped onto my jacket to help shield you from the cold. “By the way, you didn’t answer my question earlier. What are you doin’ out here?”
“Well, Thor suggested we bring out the karaoke machine and I needed to find a way out from embarrassing myself.” You laughed as you turned to look out at the night sky. The moon seemed to shine against your skin, highlighting how soft your features are. It makes you look like a goddess, that you’re too beautiful to even look at.
“Ahh, we wouldn’t want that, now would we?”
“Tony would’ve recorded it and had blackmail over my head for years! Poor Thor, doesn’t realize what he’s gonna get himself into.”
I laughed and wondered if anyone is tipsy enough to join in or if it’s gonna be a solo concert by our one and only God of Thunder. Here’s hoping he at least has a decent voice. “Ahh, he’ll be okay. He’ll have fun regardless.”
You softly hummed as you took a quick peek at my hand and noticed the present I’ve still yet to give. “I um.. I actually saw you walk out and was wondering if I could steal a little bit of your time? Without any interruptions.” You looked up at me and smiled. “Well… it looks like it’s just the two of us out here. I don’t think anyone is gonna come outside into the cold.”
“You did.”
“That’s besides the point.” You laughed and subtly glanced down at the present once more before meeting my gaze. “Somethin’ you wanna talk about?” I cleared my throat and raised my arm up to scratch the back of my neck. “Yeah, actually um.. I’d say it’s pretty important considering it’s about you.”
“Oh? Okay uh.. what’s goin’ on?”
I took in a shaky breath and held up the box in my hand, extending my arm towards you and watched your eyes slowly widen. “Merry Christmas, doll.” You hesitantly reached for the box and looked down at the pretty wrapping before tilting your head and meeting my eyes.
“Me?”
I nodded.
“You.”
You softly smiled and started unwrapping your gift, the sound of the paper ripping made me hold my breath in anticipation as I watched your reaction once you popped the small box open. Your lips parted as you took in my gift and I waited for any sign of discomfort or disappointment. You reached in and pulled out my dog tags, your thumb running along the metal engraved with my name.
“Bucky..”
“You’re always playing with them whenever I’m not wearing it and.. and I saw you slip it on once when you thought I wouldn’t notice. I just thought.. I thought that maybe you’d like to keep them safe for me.”
You stayed silent as you continued looking at my necklace in your hand. I tried analyzing your reaction, but my nerves wouldn’t let me be rational and my mind went straight to you not liking your gift. Suddenly feeling very exposed and cold, I quickly tried to rush out apologies if your present wasn’t something you would want.
“I’m sorry if it’s kinda shitty. I just figured you’d want it since.. I can just take it back and get you something else if that’s what you – ”
“No!”
I went to reach for the necklace but stopped in my movements at your sudden exclaim. My necklace held tightly in your hands against your chest, your body slightly turned away as if to protect it from being taken away.
“I – I mean..” You looked down at the piece of jewelry in your hands and held it up so it now dangled in front of the both of us as I waited to see what you would do. “I’m known to keep things safe..” You bent your head down and slipped the necklace on, as it now lay nestled against your chest.
You looked down and reached your hands up to it once again as you smiled. “Especially when it’s something as special as this.”
I smiled, finally feeling a sense of warmth spread across my face as I watched you admire something of mine and wearing it with pride. I slowly walked closer to you and lifted my left hand up, reaching for the necklace. My fingers ran through my engraved name, metal meeting metal, and softly smiled looking up at you.
“It looks better on you.”
I watched as your eyes crinkled with happiness in them and your smile continued to grow as I let it fall back against your chest. I reached up and pushed a strand of your hair away and placed it behind your ear as your head tilted towards my hand. I hesitantly held it centimeters away from your cheek as you lifted your hand to place on top of mine, bringing it down so I could feel you against me.
I watched you hold onto me and close your eyes, sighing in content. I slowly rubbed my thumb against your cheek as I studied every feature on your face, not sure when or if I would get this opportunity again. We were standing so close that I was almost so sure you could hear my heart beating erratically against my chest. “If you’re gonna kiss me, Barnes, you should do it before the moments’ gone.”
My lips parted in surprise as your pretty little eyes opened and met mine. I saw you glance at my lips for a moment as you slowly leaned your body in closer towards mine. I bent my head down and brought your face closer to mine. Your breath fanned against my cheek as you fluttered your eyes closed, letting out a soft, “Please..”
Who am I to deny you a kiss?
I closed the distance between us and connected our mouths together, your cold lips finally meeting mine and everything felt like it was slowly falling into place. Your body fit so perfectly in my arms and your perfume engulfed my senses once again. My shoulders raised up slightly in surprise once you brought your hands up to the side of my face and reached behind my neck, bringing me closer to you.
“Mmm..” I moaned against you when I felt your fingers comb through my hair and gave it a slight tug. You smiled into our kiss and held me there, as if there was any other place I’d rather be right now. I slid my hands down to your back and felt the fabric of my jacket you still had on.
I couldn’t feel the cold breeze blowing against me or hear the music coming from inside Tony’s house. I couldn’t focus on anything but you. Now that I finally got a taste of your lips, I knew I was in trouble. You slowly pulled away as my lips chased after yours, not wanting this moment to end just yet. You let out a giggle and pressed one more kiss before leaning back so you could look at me.
“Wow… merry Christmas to me.” You laughed and rolled your eyes. “Oh my God..”
I looked at your lips and felt myself wanting to go in once more so I could feel you again, but before I could lean in, you lifted your hand up and placed your finger against my lips. “We should head back inside. You may be okay out here in the cold, but I am not.” You chuckled as I lifted my hand up to grab yours and puckered my lips, giving your finger a little kiss.
“I could always find a way to keep you warm.”
“Bucky..!” You blushed and turned your face away from me as I laughed and held you close to me. “Okay, okay, okay..” I smiled and held your hand in mine, intertwining our fingers together as I looked down at my dog tags around your neck. Warmth spread all over my chest at the thought of you walking back in and showing off your gift to everyone. “C’mon doll, let’s head back inside.”
You held onto my jacket tightly against you as we both walked back inside, hand in hand. “In case I wasn’t clear earlier about my gift..” You spoke right after I closed the door behind us. “I really love it.”
“And in case I wasn’t clear about my intentions earlier..” I smiled and brought your hand up to my lips, placing a sweet kiss on top. “I would love to be able to call you mine..”
You smiled back at me and nodded.
I don’t care how much teasing I’ll get from Sam or Tony because in the end, I got the best gift I could ever get.
“I would love that.”
I got you.
I left my panties at Malfoy manor.
When I woke up this morning, It was so hot that our skin felt fused together. With Draco being little spoon I was able to peel myself away from him without alarming him. I slowly made myself down the loft stairs to the bottom and search for my clothes in the darkness.
I decided to walk home before school so I can put on fresh clothes, so I got up before five. As I made myself down the driveway I notice that security had arrived. I prepare myself to make up an excuse but the gate opens without me saying anything.
Now, here I am on the side of the country road doing my very first walk of shame as the morning commuters swerve pass me. In my school girl outfit and my thirty kilo book bag. I'm starting to think I think of myself way higher than I should. This is a very humbling experience.
The sky is almost completely lit when I finally make it home. My mother has left but the mirrors are still fogged up in the bathroom so I'm assuming she has just left. She's always in a hurry to leave because she tries to get every second of sleep she can. I swipe my hand across the mirror clearing only enough to see myself for the first time since losing my virginity. I graze my hand over two purple marks Draco has left on my neck. They're faint, but still noticeable. I feel embarrassed. How am I suppose to explain this to my friends. I hop straight into the shower. Leaving my clothes and book bag by the hamper.
I get out only when the water starts to run cold. I head straight into my room trying not to look at my self in the mirror. After putting on a fresh uniform, I decide to put on some make up. Placing two red dots on the hickeys to make it look like a vampire bite and some dark eye make up.
I walk toward the science wing where the Botanist Club meets in the morning. I feel stupid with the amount of makeup I have on. Neville is the chairman and has been in it with Luna, his vice chairman, since first year.
I love walking in the science hall. It's covered in vines and colorful flowers. The floors also has the periodic table painted onto the floor by the art club from years ago.
When I look out the garden windows I see Neville leading the club back in from the green house. Luna sees me before I see her. They're both wearing their matching costumes. Neville has a pink flower on top of his head with a couple of white thorns made out of paper stuck to his school vest. Luna has a bunch of deep purple leaves stuck to her with a couple of whit flowers, along with the rest of the club that are dressed as flowers. Luna waves at me dreamily while walking towards me. After seeing Luna at Neville's party everything about her makes sense. Luna's not ditzy, she's a stoner. She's always high.
"Wow Maisie, you look fantastic!" Luna pulls me in for a hug. She smells like dirt, but not in a gross way, in the earthy way.
"So do you Luna! The whole plant squad looks adorable!" I say.
"Thank you! It was all Nev's idea of course!" Luna turns and waves at Neville and he waves back. The first bell rings and Luna and I head for class. "You're coming tonight, right? I hear Cormac was invited but Neville never got an answer."  I nod. Oh god. I forgot about the whole Hermione and Cormac secret. I completely judge Hermione for hooking up with her peer and I had done the same exact thing.
"Hey, do you want to go to Blaise Zabini's Halloween party Saturday." I say as we turn down the History hall. It's not as decorated as the science wing but its covered in some historical documents and quotes. Nothing special.
"I was invited and it would be nice to have someone to talk to. Plus, they probably wouldn't mind you being there especially Theo." Luna rolls her eyes.
" I heard they do coke at those parties or at least, that's what Fred and George said. Pansy Parkinson did a line of space dust and stripped naked in Goyle's fountain...at a Christmas party." Luna recalls."So yes, I want to go. Who invited you anyway? Draco Malfoy?" Luna says softly as if saying his name will summon him.
"Yeah he did. The tutoring thing has brought us back as friends I guess." I say.
"Oh yes! I remember you two being close in like primary or something. How weird..." Luna says as the second bell rings. Luna and I split as we head to our separate classrooms.
My first class of the day is history with Professor Moody. He's a crazy guy but I'd easily say one of my favorites. He's a great teacher and the perfect teacher to wake me up early in the morning with his loud voice.
I sit close to Moody's desk in the front. We usually talk at the end of class or have small debates. I pull my books and pencils out as the rest of the class floods in, Including Moody.
"Almost didn't recognize you there Maisie!" Moody Laughs. "That Vampire bite almost looks real" I look down and my ears start to feel hot. Moody turns to the board and starts to scribble something on the board. I'm lucky to be a good listener because Moody's hand writing is exactly that, scribbles. I don't want to blame it on his eye patched eye but I always thought that was why.
More students fill the room, including Theo Nott who has his lacrosse stick hanging half way out of his bag. Theo scans the room before meeting at me. He walks towards me and sits down. It's not really unlike him to sit next to someone like me, so he can cheat off us. I won't allow it! If he'll just ask me for help I'll at least think about it...
"Here." Theo holds his hand out like there's something in it. I look up at him and he shakes his head. I hold my hand out and he drops a white origami bird in my hand with 'open me' written on it. I start to open the paper ripping it occasionally.
MEET ME IN THE FORBIDDEN CORRIDOR .
d.m.
I look up at Theo and he shrugs. I stand up and walk up to Moody.
"I...uh...need to go talk to Head Mistress Afults." I say. The bell rings and the last late students walks in. Moody nods and I walk out the class to the forbidden hall way.
It's not as scary as you think it is. It's just an abandoned hall way with empty class rooms. We were told it was forbidden first year but mostly because no prefects are available to watch it. I go to this hallway all the time to tell the truth. When the art classes do their yearly paint of the tree in the courtyard I come in and sit in one of the classrooms for the week.
When I reach the corridor I see Draco at the very end. As I get closer Draco, his costume becomes more apparent as he turns to me. A vampire. His long cloak flows behind him as he paces across the hall, and as he turns to face me. I feel his eyes wander over me. Draco lifts his eyebrows and smile.
"Maisie Waters, skipping class... never saw that coming." Draco teases. Draco holds his hands out for me to grab. I look down at his long fingers stretched out towards me. They're decorated with silver snake rings with emerald eyes. I look up at Draco's gleaming eyes. He's smiling at me and I can't help but to smile back. I grab Draco's hand firmly and step closer to him. "You left so soon this morning."
" I tried not to disturb you." I say quietly.
"You didn't disturb me, that's the problem. I want to be able to walk you out next time." Draco says sternly. Next time? "And maybe next time I can help you find your panties." Draco reaches under his cape and pulls out my pink Monday knickers. I feel my face turn hot. I reach for them but Draco snatches them from my arms length. "Oh no Mai, they're mine now."
"Oh god, Dray." I mumble. Silence falls on Draco and I. "Draco why did you call me out of class..."
"Just wanted to make sure you're okay..." Draco trails off. "And to make sure we were on the same page about what this is...."
"This? You mean you want to keep it a secret." I hiss. Draco says nothing. I let go of his hand letting it swing to his side. "I wasn't going to tell anyone. You arsehole."
Draco crosses his arms in front of himself and looks at the ground. "I'm not trying to offend you Mai-"
"-Well you did." I say backing away from Draco. I throw my hands up and let them hit my sides as I walk away from Draco. What a dumbass, and I'm not even talking about Draco.
Read on AO3
People lined the street waiting to get into the club, most in varying states of intoxication. You felt out of place, not having been to a place like this in many years. The so-called ‘dress’ you were wearing did nothing to help. It was just a small piece of black fabric that left very little to the imagination. It made you feel incredibly exposed, even with the years of training you had stashed under your belt.
Somehow, you still had a pistol and a knife strapped onto your body. A chill breeze suddenly hit you, causing goosebumps to spread. A New York club in the dead of winter was not your forte, and you wanted to get this mission done as soon as possible.
The outside of “The Den” seemed like any other stereotypical dance club in the area. A basic black brick building, accompanied by blacked-out windows. Loud bass could be heard from the outside, which made you cringe internally. The constant loud background noise would make it hard for you to focus at points, especially when trying to listen to intel from your team.
Anything to get your paycheck and leave, maybe finally to take a vacation. After years of being under different contracts with different agencies, you were exhausted from the work. Yet you felt guilty for wanting to take that break since there was always another problem to be fixed. Always someone fucking up the world for the rest of everyone.
This time, it was a rouge Russian scientist. Dmitri Volkov, also known as “Wolf” had specialized in pharmaceutical sciences with their military. His career was spent researching different ways to make pain medications work faster for those on the field, and ways to help with shock. A year prior, he completely dropped off the radar.
Many ruled it suicide, but a body was never found. Authorities searched his labs, he was gone without a trace. Even odder, so was all of his working gear. Shortly after, people in the party scene in Russia started mass ODing. The drug was never found in people's systems, yet clear signs of overdosing were shown on their bodies.
Different groups sent in decoys to find the drug, or find any information on it. The off-white powder was sold in small baggies, with a wolf emblem etched onto them. Not many were aware of the ties of the ‘dead’ scientist and the drug, but that was where you fit in. It was your job to scope out the aptly named party club, “The Den.” As a partygoer, it was your job to weasel your way into the underground system. You needed to be trusted by the higher-ups and get to Volkov.
“Minx, do you copy?” The hidden earpiece spoke, jolting you from the surprise. The familiar voice of your partner helped with the nerves. Jessica Salvatore had been one of the only females in your basic training, and you stook together ever since. Even when you took the solo route when she found out you were involved with a mission, so was she.
Friends were rare to come by with your lifestyle, so you never took Jessica for granted. She knew you liked working alone but somehow weaseled her way into your ‘team’ and your life.
“Affirmative, waiting for the club to open up. I’m freezing my tits out here Jess,” You heard a chuckle coming from the other side of the comms, making you roll your eyes. She wasn’t the one in stilettos outside a club, dressed sluttier than you ever had been in your life. Even during your party days, the outfits had never been this extreme.
“I can see you, by the way, don’t forget I also have a job to do,” She mentioned, and you could practically hear the sarcastic grin in her voice. By her words, you could bet the security cam system of the club was well into your team's possession by now.
If there is one thing Jessica “Cybernaut” Salvatore was known for was her expertise in computer systems and hacking. She spent most of her teenage years behind a screen, cracking codes and creating her own. She took interest in using her skills for military use instead of becoming an IT or whatnot. You thought that was blasphemous, as Jessica could be well off by now.
But that wasn’t her lifestyle, and neither was it yours. You were never that phenomenally interested in anything during high school, drifting from club to club. Granted you weren’t terrible at them either, but nothing ever stuck. All you know is you wanted to help people, and you were also extremely competitive. An existential crisis hit halfway through senior year, and you ended up joining the military.
You quickly found out what you had been missing all those years. Learning how to fight and use weapons filled some holes you had been missing in your life. With that newfound knowledge, you pushed yourself year after year. After thousands of hours of practice, your combat skills improved tremendously. You became a lethal weapon, paired with a pretty face.
After a while, you got bored of it all. You needed a change in scenery, a different job perhaps. Multiple groups took interest in you, but you decided to be a lone contractor by yourself. This meant you picked what missions you went on, who to help, and when. It was stressful, especially with the high risks.
Most days you didn’t know if you were going to make it home alive.
The name “Minx” was slapped onto you during one of your first missions. The name seemed stupid to you at first, even sexist. Yet, you learned to love it once you realized how you could use your beauty as a weapon. Deciding to not let it get to you, you knew the name had a double meaning. It was just a part of you, alluring yet dangerous.
You noticed the line starting to move, which made your nerves inch up a little bit. A lot was riding on your shoulders tonight, and you wanted to prove yourself.
The height of your heel seemed lethal enough, you were surprised you could even walk in them. After most of your life spent in combat boots, tall stilettos were a massive change. Your feet hurt a little, but the cold numbed them slightly which you were thankful for.
With the line moving, you could finally see the door to the club in front of you. You mentally went through all of the goals in your brain, making sure everything was sorted. You focused on what you needed to do, turning off the rest of your brain. The coldness and nervousness drifted away as you were put into a focused headspace.
The bouncer scanned your ID, making sure everything matched. There was no way he was going to know it was a fake, especially since it was made by some form of government. You didn’t care who you were working with, a job was a job. As long as you worked for the ‘good’ guys, all was well. You shot him an excited smile, hoping to play the part of a partygoer well. The bouncer glanced at your body before giving the ID back, shooting a creepy smile in your direction.
“Don’t have too much fun,” He winked, a flirty tone to his voice. You tried not to cringe at the man, instead nodding at him. A quick thanks was muttered from you, and then you were off. The club was already packed when you entered, people crowded in every nook and cranny. You thanked whatever god there was that you were trained for this type of situation, and knew what to do in case hell broke loose.
You took a spot at the bar and instantly looked around the club. The whole thing was very cliche, and looked like any other bar in New York. Ordering some random cocktail off of the menu, you did your best to blend in with the crowd. While mentally taking note of every possible exit, you noticed what looked like a regular partygoer come out of an unmarked door. It might have been innocent, but it piqued your interest anyway.
“Pick up the pace Minx, we haven't got all night.” A voice spoke into your earpiece. You fought the urge to roll your eyes, you couldn’t get the whole mission done in five minutes.
Finishing your drink, you decided to join the crowd on the dance floor. You needed to see this drug in action, and what its users looked like. The dance floor met you with people who were visibly intoxicated by either drugs or alcohol. A woman in front of you was dancing by herself, filling the air with giggles. The flashing lights and loud music obscured her appearance from you, but when you caught a glimpse of her it was hard to not stare.
She noticed you watching her after a moment, turning to face you as she smiled. The woman looked like a corpse who had wandered onto the dance floor. Her ghastly pale skin seemed as though it was going to flake off any moment, and her eyes were incredibly sunken in. Even with the state of her appearance, the woman looked like she was having the time of her life.
Her eyes seemed lively yet so incredibly dead at the same time, the stark contrast threatening shivers down your spine. She was a living zombie, as were many others around her. You looked away for a moment, noticing many others that looked exactly like her. A piece of your brain clicked, remembering the symptoms of those on the drug.
Whatever was in this drug was killing people from the inside out.
“You’re really pretty, what's your name?” The corpse woman slurred, her uncomforting stare meeting yours. You smiled in return, giving her your fake name for the night. She told you her name was Becca, and she invited you to dance for a while.
“Are you bored?” She asked, her drugged gaze freezing you in your place. You nodded in response, hoping this was the lead you needed. Becca took your hand into her cold and clammy one, yanking you off of the dance floor. The earpiece you wore crackled to life again as you were whisked around the club.
“Do what she says, we’ll get you out of there if need be,” Jessica spoke, the farewell message leaving a sour note on your tongue. You decided to ignore it and noticed the woman brought you to the unmarked door you saw earlier. She turned around and opened the door, ushering you in.
The pitch-black stairway was lined with rainbow LEDs, switching between different colors. You thanked the lights for being there as you tottered down the stairs, being led by Becca. For a moment, you let your mind wander. You wondered what the young girl's life was like, especially before she got hooked on the drug. Did she have a family? A significant other? Did she abandon it all for her addiction? The thought gave you goosebumps, and you immediately went back on track
“So what have you done before?” Becca asked when you entered the basement. The whole thing was massive, looking like a whole separate club. The landscape was different, giving off a much darker vibe. The people in the basement also looked different from the rest of the clubgoers, many of them visibly rich.
“Not much, I did coke once if that counts,” You responded, trying to seem interested in the whole ordeal. It was hard to focus on the girl in front of you when there was a whole black market happening in front of you, the dangerous drugs being passed around like candy.
“This is gonna be so much better,” Becca smiled at you, and chills ran down your back. Her uneasy stare, her lifeless eyes, she looked soulless. Becca held out her hand to you before waving a man over, expecting you to pay. You pulled a twenty out of your bra and gave it to her as she grinned, visibly excited for her next hit.
She exchanged with the man, giving you the small tablet. The size of the drug was concerning, it was minuscule. It was shocking to you how small it was, and how much damage that tiny thing could do. Remembering what Jessica said, you hesitantly took the drug. You knew there were about five minutes before it started setting in, so you had to get out as soon as possible.
The last thing you remembered of that night was feeling incredibly nauseous and dizzy.
“Good morning,” A voice called from a few feet away as you finally came too. You felt as if you got hit by a semi-truck, maybe a few of them. A migraine ravaged your head, and the rest of your body felt like sludge.
“They did some tests on your blood, there's some scary shit in that drug Minx.” Flickering your eyes to the voice, you noticed Jess was sitting next to you while typing on a computer. She had a bunch of her gear and overall looked exhausted. You reckoned that you probably looked worse, having been drugged.
You didn’t ask questions about how you got out of the club, but you also didn’t care since you made it out safely. There were other objectives to worry about, like Volkov himself. He was never shown inside the club, even though that was tipped off as his headquarters. The scientist was smart, he could’ve been anywhere.
You were disappointed in yourself for not finding out more information other than securing the drug itself. It felt as if there was more you could’ve done, more contributions you could’ve added. Sitting silent in the bed for a moment, you contemplated what was going to happen next.
With security cam footage and audio recordings to back you up, you could prove how big of an issue the drug was becoming. After the testing, it was clear what was in the drug itself and how it was so addictive and dangerous. Jessica typed on her computer for a little while longer, leaving the room in silence. You assumed she was finishing the review on the mission, letting the higher-ups know you were alive and well. She sighed as she heard her phone buzzing, excusing herself into the hallway for a second.
Hospitals were nothing new to you, a painful memory of a life before. Nights spent sobbing next to a bed, praying to whatever god would listen. When your mother died, a piece of you died with her. You just hoped she was proud of what you made of yourself.
“I’ve got news for you,” Jessica re-entered the room with a grim expression on her face. You expected something extremely bad or unfortunate based on the last 24 hours.
“Higher-ups think this Volkov shit is getting way too out of hand, thinks we can’t finish it alone. They’re gonna do some more digging themselves, but in the meantime they want us to team up with a task force.” The news wasn’t all that terrible to you, more of a nuisance than anything. It had been so long since you worked with others that weren’t directly associated with you, so the idea of meeting a new group excited you.
“They’re gonna send us some info on the group ASAP, you’ll probably be up and ready to go by then. If we want to continue working on this case, we can’t do it alone.” The short timeline wasn’t anything new to you. You were used to a fast-paced lifestyle, never staying in one place long. You raised yourself into a sitting position, ignoring the protest of your limbs.
“Well, let's get started then.”
The last Congress, the 117th, which sat from January 2021 through January 2023, was controlled by Democrats on both sides of the Capitol. These lawmakers worked in concert with a new Democratic President, so naturally, we witnessed an unusual amount of legislative activity.
Wanna guess how much? The 117th Congress passed, and Joe Biden signed, 362 laws. Now it practically goes without saying that a hefty majority of these were small-bore matters—relatively inconsequential in policy terms. There were the proverbial post office renamings, the Harlem Hellfighters Congressional Gold Medal Act, the Big Cat Public Safety Act, and the like. Still, an unusually high number of them were very consequential indeed: the American Rescue Plan, the hard infrastructure bill, the CHIPS and Science Act, and several more. They were aimed at helping people and businesses through the pandemic, solving aching public needs, creating jobs, reshaping industrial policy, and more. Whatever else you want to say about them, these people were earning their paychecks.
The 118th Congress—the current one; the one that opened with the clown show where Kevin McCarthy needed 15 ballots to be elected Speaker by his own party—has not been quite the hive of productivity that its predecessor was. So far, seven months into its term, it has passed, and the president has signed, 12 bills. They’re on track, if they can possibly keep up this scorching pace for the next 17 months, to pass maybe 44, even 45 or 46 bills!
And what laws they are! They’ve renamed a veterans’ clinic. They’ve toasted the 250th anniversary of the Marine Corps commemorative coin. Oh, but it hasn’t all been ceremonial. They’ve also pressed forward with the racism for which they are so widely and justly known, notably the bill that revoked part of Washington D.C.’s criminal code—McCarthy called it soft on crime, and Biden quasi-reluctantly signed it to avoid that age-old tag. The only law of any real consequence was the increase in the debt limit, on which the supposedly out-of-it Biden ran circles around the supposedly spry Speaker.
As far as improving the lives of working- and middle-class people, McCarthy’s majority has done absolutely nothing. But by God, don’t call them the “Do-Nothing Congress.” Oh, no! They’ve done stuff. For example, they’ve investigated Hunter and Joe Biden over, under, sideways, and down.
I wonder how many public dollars James Comer and Jim Jordan, respective chairs of the House’s Oversight and Judiciary committees, have spent trying to prove crimes that probably don’t exist but that they insist, every week, will be pitilessly exposed for all the world to see in just a little while, you’ll see—you’ll all see. In fact, Democrats: Why not tell the world how much they’re spending? I’d assume you have access to the basic budgetary materials. How about a Biden Goose Chase Clock toting up the taxpayer dollars being wasted on this sham?
Those two just get more ridiculous every week. Last week, you’ll recall, Comer’s committee had a closed-door session with yet another star witness, Devon Archer, a former Hunter Biden business partner who was supposedly poised to finally blow the lid off the whole thing. “The walls are closing in on the Bidens,” Comer crowed on Newsmax Monday night.
In the end, Archer’s testimony—taken that afternoon, released later in the week—did nothing of the sort. Which Comer might have known if he’d even bothered to show up at his own hearing, which he did not do!
As for Jordan—well, his special new “deep state” committee or whatever it’s called has been an even bigger abuse of the taxpayer dollar. Just Google “Jim Jordan deep state committee” and look at the headlines: “Inside Jim Jordan’s Disastrous Search for a ‘Deep State’ Whistleblower”; “Jordan’s ‘weaponization’ panel is all conclusions, no evidence”; “Jim Jordan’s ‘Weaponization’ Committee Is Misfiring.”
But hey, don’t be too hard on him. He may have other matters on his mind. In late June, the Supreme Court decided that a lawsuit brought by former Ohio State University wrestlers against a team doctor who was found by an investigation to have sexually abused 177 young men from the 1970s to the 1990s can move forward. Jordan was an assistant wrestling coach during part of the period in question; he has always denied any knowledge of the abuse. Two former wrestlers, however, in a complaint to the Supreme Court, allege that Jordan was aware of the behavior of “Dr. Cough” and did nothing: “Because Coach Hellickson, Assistant Coach Jordan, and the athletic department treated Dr. Strauss’s behavior as acceptable, John Doe 23 believed there was nothing he could do to address his discomfort with Dr. Strauss.” CNN reported back in 2020 that six ex-athletes charged that Jordan knew.
This is one of the reasons I laugh these days when I hear Republicans say of Democrats, as McCarthy and others did during the D.C. criminal code debate, that Democrats are soft on crime.
And oh yeah, the other (and main) reason: Donald Trump. Today’s Republicans are the softest-on-crime bunch of legislators in the history of the republic. They wanted, until they got hooted out of town for it, to “expunge” Trump’s impeachments! I’m putting that in scare quotes because there’s actually no such thing as an “impeachment expungement,” but you know, there was no such thing as holding family members guilty for someone’s crimes until Stalin decreed it, either.
The GOP’s lies are operatic, bald-faced, and so nakedly and obviously untrue that one experiences a kind of wonderment just watching these people actually go out in public before cameras and say these things. Here was McCarthy, for example, shortly before Trump’s arraignment: “I could say the same thing that Hillary Clinton says about her election that she lost.… I can say the same thing about those in the Democratic Party from the leadership on down about George Bush not winning, that Al Gore did. But were any of them prosecuted? Were any of them put in jail?”
I mean … what?! Do I even have to answer that? Clinton made some noises about votes being off but conceded to Trump the day after the election. Gore fought the 2000 outcome to the Supreme Court, as anyone would have, but the court issued Bush v. Gore on December 12 and Gore conceded on December 13. Neither egged on a riot on our most sacred national building (a riot that McCarthy denounced at the time himself!). I can’t help but think that when these guys and their handlers sit around dreaming up what they’ll say next, they just howl to one another: “We can say anything—the mainstream press, drunk on their weird notion of ‘objectivity,’ can’t really challenge us because if they do, we can accuse them of showing liberal bias, and the gullible idiots on our side will be our echo chamber!”
I’d call these people a joke, but it’s far worse and more frightening than that. They are a menace. Congress has been littered with racists and drunks and bribe-takers throughout its history. But it has never been this bursting at the seams with people like this. They lie about everything. They denounce and seek to destroy our system of government. They use their power to conduct taxpayer-funded fishing expeditions for which they have no evidence, where they’re just praying they get a bite so that, in classic fascist-projection fashion, they can accuse Biden of that which they know Trump to be guilty.
And as for trying to do anything to improve the lives of the American people—i.e., doing their jobs? Please. Don’t be naïve. To their mind, American people don’t need health care or wages or a cleaner planet. They need tax cuts and guns and protection from those 100 or so transgender high school female athletes (yes, in the whole country) and, most of all, Donald Trump as their President for life. Come to think of it, the fewer laws these maniacs pass, the better.
Can I request yandere emesis blue engineer and his brothers all pinning after somewhat oblivious s/o?
I love your writing, it's amazing! Have a good day and stay healthy.
Yesss , thank you so so so much my friend
Tw: general feelings of dread and anxiety, unknown captivity, chase sequence, obsession, threats?, mentions of inter dimensional travel, oblivious to doom. Pet names (sugar, darling)
Dell didn’t know what you thought of him, when you had met for the first, and only time you barely spoke. His parents had hosted a party, you were a prime guest. His parents had expected him to speak to you, but he wasn’t certain how special you were. Until you got to talking, he wasn’t sure if you were comfortable with him or if he was comfortable with you but in an instant you two seemed kindred. He was swept off his feet at the sheer amount of knowledge you had in your interests. Even more astonishing was the fact you were not only interested in his inventions but his hobbies too.
You’d convinced him to make you a drink that night. And when he made you an original you fell in love with it.
He swore he wouldn’t go another day without seeing that smile.
But fate is a cruel mistress.
You excused yourself an hour later, leaving the man alone again… then he got to wondering. He wandered around in search of you. He asked around for you and no one knew.
No one knew you existed.
He tried to find your parents but to no avail, he asked his brothers and they had no clue.
One thing was certain though, they all loved you.
Maynard remarked on the situation, how funny you were, and how you seemed to be more mindful of what was happening around you. Zed thought the same, but pointed out a fact the brothers had been avoiding.
You were gorgeous.
You were smart.
And you were sociable.
At least to them.
Their search was frantic, and even so they didn’t get what they wanted. You’d come in from out of town, your parents ran a artillery company, and you had a vested interest in sciences involving alternate universes.
That’s what they had to go off; they searched through every yellow page they could grab onto. Still, whenever they get they got a shred of evidence they gave up.
When they determined their search was fruitless they got to fanaticism.
The years went by.
Dell got stuck in a machine known as a trap to his family, and his brothers had to cope with the fact they’d only ever see him in short intervals.
You came before the loop started.
Some thing within Dell told him you were there before he knew. He felt an imbalance, an energy he’d been connected to. The energy field within the respawn made him privy to environmental changes. He felt the courses move around him, he wanted out… but he didn’t know why.
He was shocked when he felt you.
He could almost feel your touch against his arm as you dragged your hand along the side of the slaughterhouse. It was a sensation new to him, and almost completely unwelcome.
You’d changed… but not in a bad way.
Youd been found after years of searching. But in the least likely way. The news had a funny way of exposing those who would rather not be noticed. You were one who could go without the paparazzi. With all the news sources asking you about your new inheritance, you had to give your sense of mind. You remarked on your business branching out into the scientific field, offering to aid NASA in further scientific discovery.
This was a good place to start.
In all the Conagher Slaughterhouse was a known front for illegal experiments, and a past monolith in military grade, privatized weapons. Why any country would allow such a building was beyond you. And the men there were far stranger.
When you’d called and asked the owners about visiting the place they seemed far too excited for your liking. You thought of backing down out of instinct alone. But science called for this.
This place was a hotspot in scientific anomaly.
When the men answered the door you were taken aback. The country clothes seemed unbefitting for their titles. They were certainly Conaghers as their faces showed remarkable similarity to their fathers.
The taller of the two rubbed his neck, mouth agape before stuttering and facing his brother. He clearly- wasn’t good at words. “Um- hi.”
His deep voice echoed slightly in the cavernous area. The dark atmosphere made everything seem quieter… more eerie. The need to turn tail overtook you but you stilled yourself and faked a smile. You held out your hand right as the bickering started.
“UhM Hi!” The shorter one mocked, annoyingly. “Hi sugar, I’m sorry bout my brother. He don’t know too many manners.” He took your hand in his and attempted to kiss it before his brother caught him by the cheeks.
Much to your relief.
He seemed as flabbergasted as you were, granted you couldn’t see either of their eyes.
“I’m so sorry, we’re happy to have you here today. If you’ll excuse him, we’ve been anxious to have you around and he’s trying to lighten the mood.” The other shook his head in objection but you could tell but the quiet pained groan that the former squeezed harder.
He let him go and offered his hand to you.
“Maynard Conagher. This is my younger brother Zed.” Zed scoffed at his brother before smiling at you. “You ain’t have to call me that sugar, I go by a lot of names.”
“What exactly would you like me to call you then sir?” You asked bluntly, not taking the hint.
“Ooh! I like that, you can call me sir all youd-!” His brothers elbow came into harsh contact with his solar plexus. Making the younger wheeze in pain.
“Please excuse him.” Maynard said once again, you smiled at him. Still not understanding exactly what Zed was implying.
“It’s quite alright. Should we start the tour Mr. Conagher?” You turned towards the seething younger. “Sir?” His head perked up and he smiled, almost bashfully. He leaned against the door and gestured inwards.
“Right this way.”
The slaughterhouse was sweltering. After about an hours tour you found yourself needing to take a seat. Maynard went to fetch drinks for the three of you. You had to stay behind with his brother.
As you checked off areas on your clipboard you noticed Zed staring at you. And intense grin stayed on his shadowed face.
You waved awkwardly at him. He wiggled his fingers back at you. Not saying much.
You went to go look down at your board again before he pushed it down.
“Do you remember me?”
You looked back up in surprise, staring back up at the man. He smelled like beer and oil, and another something rancid that you would rather not place. As you searched your mind you couldn’t think of a damn thing. The stress you’d been put under lately was doing weird shit to your memory. You politely said no, smiling in hopes Zed would leave you alone.
He frowned, but backed off all the same.
He walked back with little reaction other than that. Instead he pulled a lighter from his pocket and flicked it open. You watched as the open flame danced in the stagnant atmosphere of the room. He shut it off and spun it again before speaking.
“I remember you.”
He said with a hushed tone.
“We. Remember you.” He corrected with a scowl.
“I’m sorry?” You questioned, curious on many fronts, but mostly due to the somber tone of his voice.
“You heard me,” Zed answered coolly, “you and I. We danced in my parents house, little over a decade ago. You said I was a good dancer, one of the best in the town of memory served me right. I take it You don’t dance much though. Too caught up in all them guns.”
He stood slowly, his postion across the room looming.
“You think you could drop in like a bombshell and expect not to make an impact sugar?” He took a couple steps forward. The action startled you, and you held a finger out.
“Can you stay there please? It’s already pretty hot in here and I’d rather not be much warmer.”
He sat where he stood, one leg up, and the other flat on the ground. He leaned into the propped one.
“Tell me. How many of us are there?”
You contemplated for a minute then had a strange epiphany.
“There’s supposed to be three.”
“That there is sugar.”
A chill ran down your spine, and on shaky legs you stood. A sick grin crawled on Zeds face as Maynard walked back with the drinks cheerfully. Zed stood stock straight in an instant and Maynard set the drinks on a nearby table in case he needed to bolt too.
“I’d follow your gut pretty thing.”
And with that you ran. Faster than you’d ever ran before. Pure adrenaline burst through your veins and you heard Zed shouting at his brother to go the opposite direction. You prayed there was a hallway that split in three. Despite your tour you felt hopelessly lost.
You passed several crates on your way past the entrances, and on one side you saw Maynard. His hand reached out, like he was trying to stop you. You continued striaght.
The heels of your feet never touched the damn ground. And you kept your back board straight. You prayed inwardly to anything that would listen that you’d could be saved. But then you were pushed.
Pushed directly into a room filled with boxes and an opening on the other side. The door behind you closed with a heavy thud, trapping your coat on the other side. You heard heavy breathing from the other doorway.
In a panicked state you flipped over, kicking the boxes in the process to slow your capture down. You backed up enough to hit a wall and that’s when the bright white light shattered.
The room was incased in darkness, and all that stood between you and doom was the smallest chance that the one you stared at was docile.
Behind the boxes you could hear a deeper voice, softer though. So you had to strain to hear.
“We spent so long lookin for you.” He said sadly. Like he was on the verge of tears. You heard his large frame slide against the wall to the floor. He pressed his hand to the box and spoke again.
“You know we spent dann near ten years trynna find you? I continued to learn the piano like you suggested, I learnt how to cook like you encouraged me to.” He sighed, and you could hear quiet sighs from beyond.
“It was one night that we saw you but we pleaded every night for you to come back to us. You just-“
You tuned him out, what was the point of hearing his speech out when you could be escaping?
You felt around for something behind you. A weapon, or a board, or something.
And you found something.
A cold draft covered your skin in goosebumps and you felt around further.
A grate.
A loose great.
It took a slight shift to pry it off the wall completely… and halfway across the room.
“And thats… what was that?” You heard panic in the voice there. Without a second thought you started to crawl through, hauling a box along with you to push behind and give you time if they got through.
“WERE …. DONT LET… FIND ONE THEN!” You heard bits and pieces of their conversation as you made your way through the air vent. You crawled along for what seemed like two minutes before you leaned unto your back and kicked the second grate.
In this room you felt the air change. No longer was it stuffy and hot, but it was cool, circulated.
And in the center stood something beautiful.
You stared at the glowing doorway like machine. Your eyes glittered with the flickering, almost magical portal opening. You stuck a hand through it then back out: your injuries on that hand seemed to vanish. You gasped.
This was incredible.
This was what you came here for. You chuckled, wondering what this would lead you to.
But the moment was short lived as the door opposite you was kicked in.
With little hesitation you jumped through the portal
Instead of being met with a new world… you were met with the soft greying ground before a bar.
Your brow furrowed in confusion, and you could hear voices above you.
Except you wondered if those were real.
Behind you was a long, long road. And before you was a welcoming building. And so you walked forward.
The bell above you chimed as you walked in, you took in the bold reds contrasted to harsh white lighting.
At the bar stood a man in a fine red suit. You blinked owlishly, trying to take in the situation. As you sat on a stool you saw him out his cup down.
“Mighty glad you could make it here dear.” He said casually before he pulled a brandy glass from under him. He filled the glass and turned to you with a smile.
You felt sick to your stomach.
“This one my families been working on for a while, why don’t you give it a try?”
Your head spun, and you tried to push yourself away from the bar, and towards the bathrooms. You fell and hit the forums shortly after standing howver.
“Aw, you look awful scared darlin’ something spook you?” The mans footsteps softly clicked over to you before you were brought into his arms. Your head tucked under his chin, his frame impossibly caging you.
“It’ll be alright, we’ve got eternity in here.”
Chapter 7 - Ordeal by fire
Series Masterlist
<- Chapter 6
A/N: This took me long enough... but at least not as long as last time. Only one more Chapter + the Epilog to go. We are getting there!
Summary: Loki and you attend the Gala together, which doesn’t go unnoticed by the other avengers.
Loki, yet again, stays by your side as your anxiety tries to derail you again.
word count: 3.514
Tumblr media
The weeks passed quickly. After you had moved back to the Stark tower your progress in taming the raging fires inside you had come to a point where you were able to train outside the specially insulated room. Loki had broadened the training from summoning and dispersing to directing your flames towards targets and it actually was working out much better than you would’ve thought. Once you could confidently light up and extinguish your fire, learning new skills became a piece of cake. You had even learned party tricks. You could sit in the living room with Peter for hours, entertaining him by setting balls of paper ablaze as soon as he threw them up in the air. Another upside of your newfound powers was that you didn’t need to search for your lighter anymore whenever you wanted to light your candles or even heat up your coffee again when you had forgotten about it and it had sat on the table for hours already.
You had even visited your old colleagues in your lab. You hadn’t even realized how much you had missed your lab work and your studies until you were catching up with Jamie, who had been your stand-in all this time. Excitedly you two had talked for an entire afternoon about her new findings. You had even helped her during some experiments, serving as the specimen for the effects of Hydra’s drug.
Soon you found yourself in front of your calendar. You swallowed hard as you saw the date that was circled in red. Today was the day of the gala. It was supposed to be one of the most exciting days of your life. But now new doubts were bubbling up. Were you really ready to be surrounded by people again? What if you couldn’t keep your anxiousness under control?
A soft knock on the door shook you out of your worst-case scenarios.
“I found the bobby pins!” Nat held them in the air triumphantly, “Let’s get you ready for your big night!”
Tumblr media
Loki was waiting patiently in the entrance hall, waiting for you. Nervously he tugged on the collar of his button-up. It felt as if his green tie was suffocating him.
"Brother, you look splendid tonight." Thor tried to reassure him.
"Thank you, Thor." Loki straightened his sleeves and his jacket.
"Are you alright? You look so skittish." Thor grinned at his brother impishly.
"No, I'm fine." Loki huffed.
"He's just nervous because he’s escorting Y/N to the gala." Tony chimed in, "Maybe he has finally grown some balls and will ask her out."
Loki wanted to glare at Tony just as Thor exclaimed: "Finally!" which made him glare at Thor instead.
"We're friends! She asked me to accompany her, so I will." Loki defended himself, "And even if I was to ask her to court me, it wouldn't be any of your business."
"You will chicken out anyway, Reindeer Games." Tony let himself fall onto an armchair, grabbing a random magazine from the coffee table right next to him. "I bet that you'd ask her when you two met up on the walk."
"I had bet you would have asked her even before that. Even before the accident.” Thor reminisced, “The hours you spent with her in the lab! But I guess you've become a bit rusty with the ladies."
"You two are distasteful, this is not a game." Loki scoffed.
Suddenly the elevator pinged, announcing its arrival. As the doors slid open, Nat stepped out to the side.
"Our future published science author." Nat proclaimed, pointing her arms towards you.
"Wow." the three guys hummed in unison. Loki had to tell himself to breathe again when he suddenly felt dizzy.
The long green dress you wore, that matched his tie, reached to the floor. It flowed softly over your silhouette, creating the illusion that you were floating over the floor. Your hair was braided and pinned up neatly.
"You like it?" you bit your lip abashed, swaying from foot to foot to make the fabric swing, “Nat made my hair.”
"Like doesn't even describe it, darling." Loki’s velvety timber made you blush.
"You look just as dashing yourself." you complimented him, fixing his tie nonchalantly, when you noticed your sleeve again, the black mesh didn’t fit to the elegant occasion. “The only thing that annoys me a bit about my outfit is the sleeve.”
“I could help with that.” Loki offered lowly, his hands softly taking yours. A shimmer spread up your arm until it reached the collar of your dress, leaving behind a dark green sleeve that looked like it was a part of your dress.
“That’s amazing” you looked at your arm in awe, “Thank you so much, Lo’!”
"Can we skip this or do you two need a prom picture as well?" Tony mocked as pretended to read the magazine in his hands.
"Are you just here to annoy us, Stark?" Loki rolled his eyes.
"Never." Tony gasped offended, "I'm just waiting on my driver to pick me up."
"You're coming, too?" your mouth gaped, "You never attend these things."
"Of course, I do! Also, I wouldn't want to miss seeing how you win first prize." He smiled sweetly at you, "You two love birds can join my ride if you haven't planned something different." he quickly added.
"Er..." he caught you off guard.
"I guess it wouldn't be sensible to drive separately," Loki grumbled behind you. You nodded contently and Tony lead the way.
"Loki." Natasha suddenly held on to his arm.
"Hm?" Loki stopped in his tracks.
"You could need that." She held out a handkerchief to him.
"Why?" he asked bewildered.
"In case you start drooling again." She deadpanned. Thor was having a good laugh, shaking his head amused. Loki narrowed his eyes at them, forcefully taking the handkerchief and hurried after you and Tony.
Tumblr media
The drive to the gala was short. The closer you got, the more nervous you felt. The collar around your neck felt constricting. Loki noticed your uneasiness as you fought with the collar, he understood that feeling all too well. His hand swiftly covered your hand that rested on your legs, and he squeezed it reassuringly.
"Hey, you're going to just be fine." he tried to calm you down.
“I know.” you gulped, “But what if I’m suddenly not anymore?”
“Then I’m still by your side.” he smiled warmly at you, “Besides, we practised for the worst case. So, you don’t need to worry, ok?”
“Ok.” you nodded but the sinking feeling in your stomach wasn’t really convinced just yet.
As you entered the venue the crowd quickly encased you. You were quick to grab Loki’s hand once again, holding tightly onto him. All the different smells of perfumes and the loud chattering were overwhelming. You knew almost no one here. For a short moment, you regretted your decision to come here at all. Luckily you quickly found your assigned seats near the front of the stage and were able to acclimatize a bit further away from the tumult.
Tony was thankfully undertaking the obligation of socializing and networking while you waited patiently for the beginning of the ceremony on your assigned seat. Loki’s arm was draped around your shoulders, his fingers lazily drawing shapes onto your skin which helped you to concentrate on the sensation instead of the nervousness deep inside you.
When the lights dimmed people started to hurry to their seats. The excited chattering slowly turned into a whisper before the room finally fell into silence. After a few welcoming words of the presenter and a short speech about the history of the event the ceremony finally started.
"So with further ado I want to welcome you to the official presentation of the 'State of the Art' award.” the young well-dressed presenter exclaimed, “As every year we have received plenty of brilliant entries that were pioneers in their respective fields. In fact, we have received so many, that we struggled to pick a definite winner which resulted, for the first time in our magazine's history, in a second round of selection. Tonight, we want to honour these 5 unique minds who managed to enter this second round. Our thanks go out to our generous sponsors who make this event possible and help our gifted newcomers, who are pushing the bounds of science, to be on display for the entire world.”
Your jaw clenched tightly which you hadn’t even noticed until Loki had softly tugged you closer by your shoulder. He was still caressing your arm to ease your mind. When your gaze caught his, he reassuringly smiled at you.
“You’re going to be fine.” he hummed to you, his dashing smile making you melt into his side, your cheeks heating up for new reasons.
“Because we know that this must be a really thrilling time for our candidates, we do not want to prolong this anymore. So without further ado, we will announce the winners. The third place and receiver of the grant fund of 1.000$ is... Dr Alexi Cronos with his entry about the use of state-of-the-art drones as unmanned defence weaponry.”
“Third place?” Loki whispered into your ear over the applause, “I thought there were five of you.”
“No idea what’s even going on right now,” you mumbled back with a shrug, your heart starting to beat faster.
The applause stayed strong as  Dr Cronos walked on stage to be congratulated by the presenter with a handshake. She handed over the oversized check and posed for a quick photo before he went back to his place.
“As many of you might have realized by now, we immediately jumped to the third place… that’s because we actually have two joined second and first places. Another first time in our history.” the audience erupted into enthusiastic applause, “Because of the similar nature and topics of the articles we decided to reward all the efforts and expertise fittingly. This means that the second place with the grant fund of 1.500$ and an additional workshop meeting with Stark Industries, which was made available by none other than Tony Stark, will be received by Damon Ryder about his efforts in overlapping genetics to cure genetic disorders and Dr Koari Ikegami about the research in recovering damaged brain tissue.”
Your mouth gaped as you didn’t hear your name being called. It couldn’t be. You watched as the two others went up to get their checks and a certificate for the workshop.
“Close your mouth, your brain is getting cold.” Tony suddenly whispered into your ear as he leaned over your shoulder.
“Oh shush.” you shooed him away.
“That means, the joined first place who receives a grant fund of 2.500$ and get their scientific work published are Dr Y/N Y/L/N about her breakthrough in molecular chemistry about the prevention of infection by synthetic airborne viruses  and Dr Barbara Morse about the advancement of genetic improvements for safe use."
Once more the room burst into applause. Tony even got to his feet, letting a whistle resound through the room. Suddenly you felt taken back to graduation when your dad had cheered your name when you were called on stage. You had felt more than embarrassed back then and even now you weren't sure how you felt about it. But it made you smile to see Tony being proud of you.
“That’s where you go up to the stage.” Tony teased as he saw your gaze fixed on him.  You quickly hurried from your seat, your legs feeling like jelly whit every step you took.
It felt as if time was slowing down all of a sudden as you approached the presenter. You could hear the beating of your heart drum in your ears as you shook her hand as she kissed both your cheeks before she moved on to Dr Morse. As you were posing for the picture, you were already mentally prepared to walk back to your seat when Dr Morse suddenly walked up to the microphone for an acceptance speech. You gulped hard. No one had mentioned that you were expected to say anything.
Your cheeks were growing warm and an overwhelming surge of heat rushed into your head. You tried to think of words quickly so you could get this over with. Your throat was already closing up as you tried to swallow and the throbbing in your veins was starting to get too much - when all of a sudden a cool breeze drifted over the stage diverting your attention back to the here and now. A pleasant shudder run over your body when you felt as if an ice cube was being dragged down your spine. Your eyes quickly darted to Loki who was still sitting in his chair, his eyes fixed on you.
"You're fine, darling." his timber resounded in your brain, as he nodded at you reassuringly. You took a deep breath and mouthed a quick 'thank you' towards him.
Dr Morse had just finished her thanks and you hesitantly approached the podium. Your eyes flit over the crowd and you felt the nervousness trying to win you over again.
"Eyes on me." Loki softly ordered to which you obliged gladly.
“This is really overwhelming.” you huffed, earning a chuckle from the crowd, “First of all I want to thank Stark Industries and especially Tony Stark for supporting my research and helping me to find a new approach and a flexible perspective for my research. I also want to thank my dear friends who have supported not only my professional path but were also by my side with each step I took in my personal life. I also want to thank the ___ for giving me this opportunity to be seen in the 'big league'.
The room applauded one last time as you and Dr Morse exited the stage and the presenter wrapped up the ceremony before she initialized the dinner.
Loki welcomed you back at the table with open arms. He tightly hugged you, quickly pecking your cheek.
“I am so proud of you.” he hummed into your ear, “You deserved this.”
You smiled against his shoulder as your eyes weld up. Loki had stood by your side for every step of your journey. He had helped out during the early trial periods; he had read through your first rough draft of your article, and he was there when you had submitted the finished work. And now, after even more hardships, he stood beside you to celebrate your victory.
Tumblr media
As the food was brought out, the chattering from before continued seamlessly. Your cheeks still felt like they were burning from all the smiling. You finally felt more at ease. The coming weeks surely wouldn't be as exciting as today had been and you weren't mad about it.
Loki and you were mingling with the others, talking about their respective article when someone tipped you onto your shoulder. You turned around to see Tony's brows creased as he peered down at his phone.
"I have to head out, J.A.R.V.I.S is talking about some kind of disturbance in my office. It's probably just Pepper searching those papers she was nagging me about earlier. Shall I call for another driver for the two of you?"
"No need Stark, we'll get home on our own." Loki waved him off.
"As long as the two of you get back in one piece." Tony shot Loki a dirty look.
"We will." you consoled him with a firm squeeze of his arm.
"All right then, see you two love birds back at the tower." he snickered. Loki and you watched Tony disappear into the crowd, not even bothering to protest this time. When Tony was out of sight, Loki gently nudged your side.
“Do you wanna ditch this party?” he hummed.
“Are you still my head again?” you grinned up at him.
Tumblr media
The night was crisp, the cool wind being a welcomed change to the stuffed venue of the Gala. Loki was strolling next to you as you wandered through a park. His hand was gracing yours every now and then.
"What are you going to do now?" Loki asked out of the blue.
"What do you mean?" you pushed a loose strand behind your ear.
"Well, now that you're a published scientist, what will be your new challenge? Do you already have any plans?"
"I dunno." you shrugged, "I haven't thought about it yet, to be honest. I mean, on the one hand, I would love to assist Jamie with her research and continue my own. But on the other hand, I want to get out in the field again. After all Ydra Corp. is still out there, trying to hide that they're Hydra."
"And doing it badly." Loki chuckled, "They could've at least put some effort into their name."
"True... but hey, makes it easier for us." you snickered, "Also I'm still waiting to be reinstated into my active Agent role and I haven't heard from Fury about the Avengers thing either."
"I'm sure he will contact you soon." Loki smiled down at you, making your cheeks burn immediately. His sweet tone and genuine smile were something you probably would never get used to.
"And in the meantime, we just concentrate to perfect your abilities."
"That sounds good too but now that we're talking about plans..." you mused, "Didn't we have plans to celebrate my nomination a few months ago?"
"Yes... we did." Loki nodded, "It's about time that we finally fulfil our obligations then."
"We better do, before we get reprimanded for taking too long." You played along.
"How about tomorrow?” Loki asked eagerly, “Just so we don't forget about it."
"Sounds like a plan." you grinned.
“Awesome.” he smiled abashed.
You walked over a bridge that led to a small pond. The moonlight shimmered on the surface of the water, making it look like an ocean of glistening crystals. You halted at the handrails, marvelling at the sight.
"Thank you, Loki." You leaned against his shoulder.
"For what?" he looked down at you.
"For everything. For being by my side tonight and being by my side in general. I don't know if I could've made it without you."
"I'm sure you would've."
"Maybe... but I like it this way much better." you smiled coyly at him.
"I'm just happy to see you excel again and adapt to your new circumstances... not everyone can do that, you know?" he let his gaze wander over the pond.
“Though I have to be honest... one of the aspects that came with all this, I probably will never get used to.”
“And that is?” he asked intrigued.
“I hate heat. I never was that big on summertime, I've always been more of a winter person.” Loki chuckled amused and pulled you into a hug. As he pulled away slowly, his hands rested on your shoulders, struggling to get out any words for a moment.
"Dance with me." he huffed over his breath.
"What? Here?" you looked around the park.
"Yes." he snickered, "Your dress is too beautiful to not be danced in."
"But we don't have music." you tried to protest.
"I can help with that." he softly touched your temple with his index. Suddenly your head was filled with classical music. You tried to hold back a smile as you mustered him.
"Ok, one dance. But I can't promise that I won't step onto your feet."
"I think I can handle that." he cheekily remarked, taking your hand in his and twirling you around. You couldn’t help the giggle that escaped your mouth as he spun and swayed with you over the ground.
“Ooop, I’m getting dizzy,” you announced after a while, holding onto Loki for dear life. He quickly slowed down, only swaying softly from side to side. It took a while for the two of you to calm down, your giggles resounding through the night.
“You look so pretty in the moonlight." Loki's eyes gazed deep into yours. Your mouth gaped as you found yourself unable to respond. The soft breeze tussled through your hair, freeing some more from your pinned-up hairdo. Loki’s eyes darted to the free-flying strands, his hand instinctively reaching out to tug them back behind your hair. His hand lingered at the base of your neck. Your head slightly leaning back, pliant to his touch.
"Y/N-” he breathed out but before he could continue a ringing interrupted him. He gulped hard as his eyes darted to your pocket.
"I think that's yours." he grinned down at you when you hadn't pulled yourself out of the trance quite yet.
"Oh." you gasped, "Sorry."
You excused yourself to accept the call. You fumbled your phone out of your pocket, Tony's face showing up on the display.
"Everything alright in the Tower?" you greeted him.
"I have someone sitting in front of me who's dying to meet you." you could hear the grin on Tony's face. Your eyes grew big as you glanced to Loki who looked back at you expectantly.
"Here, i noticed you lost this earlier." ( @mediical-trek , Bluebird giving something Spock dropped? Can be any versions you'd think fit)
Spock had been on the move throughout the ship from his own quarters, the sick bay, to the bridge.
Frustration was starting to become very apparent on the vulcan's features, he had not found what he was looking for and he was running out of places on the ship to look. Mr. Scott would not prefer to have the science officer attempt to pull the Enterprise apart in his search. But for what Spock wanted to have in his possession again, he was willing to consider it. Much to his inner dismay, however, the half-alien was coming to the logical conclusion that whatever he had lost might now be on some distant planet in the vastness of space...lately, he had been on a lot of ground parties.
Then there was Bluebird.
A new medical officer who came upon the Enterprise at the request of Doctor McCoy needing an 'extra hand', even with Nurse Chapel. A lot of officers were getting hurt lately. Bluebird is a Filisophlite, from the planet Enus. Which partly meant, as Captain Kirk already gave a chuckle to, Spock wasn't the only crew member with pointed ears anymore.
The vulcan was on a slightly defeated journey back to his quarters when she had suddenly appeared before him causing him to stop abruptly as he almost walked right into her. At first, Spock didn't seem thrilled to see her but then his agitated features melted completely when he saw what she held out to him.
It was his mother's necklace.
The silver clasp for the piece of blue that came from the planet of Vulcan had broken which meant it must have slipped from his neck-as he always wore it-tucked below his shirt. The jewelry was a special keepsake that not many onboard even knew he had.
'Thank you.' Was all Spock could say as he slowly but gently picked up the necklace, looking over the stone's condition for a moment before he let his hand's fingers close around it in a protective manner. He'd have to fix that clasp. But his attention went back to the medical officer a second later. '...It was Bluebird, correct? The name you wish to be called?'
Have you obsessed over how long it would be for Ava in the otherside for every day that Beatrice pines for her earthside? I have. And I did the math for you.
(Rounded to three decimal points.)
If what Jillian and Lilith's experiment uncovered is true and 7.8 seconds earthside is equal to 107 minutes in the otherside, and we assume that the varriance is constant, then:
1 second earthside ≈ 823.077 seconds otherside
1 minute earthside ≈ 823.077 minutes otherside
1 day earthside ≈ 2.255 years otherside
1 year earthside ≈ 823.077 years otherside
1 day otherside ≈ 104.972 seconds earthside
---
Personal conclusions:
823.077 or 823.0769230769 may have some special meaning to the show and its science. That or it's just the nature of the math, but I'm not a mathematician by trade so what do I know.
If Michael spent at most 15 years in the otherside, he would have been sent back to earth 6.65 earth days after entering the portal.
As season 2 picks up 2 months after the season 1 finale, that is a resonable amount of time for "Miguel" to establish himself and go around searching for the Halo bearer.
Depending on how long the season 2 final scene is after the climactic fight, and what Ava had to do/accomplish in the otherside, she might already be back by that time.
Ava might have been sent back to earth with a mission similarly to how Michael was.
The mission could be self-appointed goal(s) or given by Reya or some unknown third-party from the otherside.
I think, if Ava is allowed to retain the Halo, that she would be trained to use it to its full capacity—or the fullest Ava can access as a human.
---
Longform math:
Again, I am not a mathematician by trade so I encourage you to double check my work and see for yourself. I did my best to summarize my messy handwritten notes to something more organized virtually.
Tumblr media
I hope this helps someone.
