i have a mad respect for people who are ✨self-taught✨. it might be due to inability to afford expertise or any other reason. it's a thousand times more an achievement, no matter if you are still a novice.

New Skill Series - Crochet Part 6
Hello everyone!
Life is less hectic now which means I have had time to crochet! So we're back to our regularly scheduled programming.
This is Crochet Lesson 5 Take 2! In case you missed it, Take 1 was a bit of a mess. Things went wrong and I had no clue where things went wrong or how to fix them. Thankfully, I do not exist in a vacuum! Both @legendarycollectionjellyfish3 and @caseyscozycorner were kind enough to comment and let me know their thoughts. You were both right! My core problem was my tension. I didn't have to go up a hook size but as seen below I was able to crochet a successful Moss/Linen stitch sample! The reason my first attempt curled was that because my stitches were so tight, I couldn't tell the difference between my chain space and my SC space so I was putting the hook in both instead of just the chain space, therefore dramatically increasing the number of stitches. At least I think that's why it curled. Thank you again for taking a moment to comment on my post because it really encouraged me to relax and try again!
Tumblr media
So yeah, here's Linen/Moss stitch take 2! I'm glad I got some outside perspective from more experienced crocheters because I genuinely thought this was going to end up as like 3 failed attempts and then giving up to come back to at a later time. Mainly because I couldn't figure out what went wrong. It's wild to think how much tension makes a difference in a piece. I think I have a better grasp on tension for crochet now but I guess we'll find out as time goes on!

One of the downsides of being a self-taught anything is that you know the thing you want to do, you just have no idea what to properly call it to summon the right help on a forum or even via google.  It’s the crafter/artist equivalent of saying “colo-nel” instead of “kernel.”

We live our lives from one eclipse to another
‘When you aren’t taught the basics of how to be human in the world (the thing that adults are supposed to teach children) there is never a point then that knowledge just pops into your head when you need it. So your only option is self-teaching. One of the many problems that comes with having to be a self-taught human is that you usually cannot even know what it is you need to learn.’ - Lee, the Butch Anarchist
.
…And whenever you think you’re done learning, an eclipse happens. I am exhausted! Why did I think the energies would be lighter after the Kala Sarpa yoga and my Saturn return? The thing that has come up constantly in this lifetime, yet again hitting me in the face once more. When I need to communicate how I feel, when it is vital for my wellbeing, mental health and relationships... it never comes out in a way that is helpful or sensible. Whether it’s timing, wording or actually not saying anything at all. My feelings were never validated as a child; I never had the space or support to talk in the way I needed to, and as an adult I have been faced with many instances where this has had a detrimental effect on my relationships
.
I feel like no matter how much therapy, self inquiry or practise I put in, communication at times feels like this impossible concept that I often don’t understand. I have a Mercury ruled Moon; talking is a huge part of how I process my emotions, I love communication and am always encouraging other people to talk about their feelings, whether that’s to me or to someone else. When it comes to myself it just seems a lot more complicated. I am autistic, so I am having to accept that it might always be an uphill struggle to make myself understood. My 20′s were the time when I learnt the hard way a lot and discovered that I needed to put work into communicating my feelings. Actually learning it is a whole other chapter..

New Skill Series - Crochet Part 3
Hello Hello Everyone!
It's Friday! This not only means that the weekened is soon upon us, but that it's New Skill Series day!🥳🥳 Today I'm going to show you the results of lesson 3: Double Crochet, learnt via this video.
As mentioned last week, I ended up going up a hook size to a 6.0mm hook and it worked a lot better than the 5.5mm hook I'd been using previously. I found that with the bigger hook, it was easier to get the tension right so it's probably that my previous tension issue was due to hook size. Who'd've known.
I'm not sure if it was the bigger hook or the stitch itself but double crochet is my favourite stitch so far. It was really easy for me to pick up and from beginning to end I didn't have any problems. I was also better able to see the stitches, but again, that could've been a hook size problem.

I think it looks pretty good! Excited to learn Triple Crochet next!
