Carrie Kelley, in 1986, was the first Robin to have an iconic weapon (her slingshot).
Tim Drake, in 1991, was the first main-line Robin to have his own distinct weapon (his bo staff, though he ALSO started out with a slingshot as a secondary).
Dick Grayson got his escrima sticks as Nightwing in mumblety 1995-1997. The first ART you could say they appear in is Nightwing vol 1 #2 (his first page in the Blue Fingerstripes outfit).
Tumblr media
They are drawn in at least once more in the miniseries, in #4, but Dick never draws them or acknowledges them.
Tumblr media
The first time he holds them is the cover of Nightwing Vol 2 #1: however they don’t appear inside.
Tumblr media
As far as I can tell the first time Dick FINALLY uses his new weapons is #5. Lady Vic gets the honour of being the first rogue smacked around with them.
Tumblr media
What’s the point of tracking all this down and establishing the 18 month long process of Dick actually USING his new weapons?
Well, mostly because I just read Oracle Year One again, and just gonna put it out there, but Richard Dragon gave Barbara Gordon escrima sticks and lessons to defend herself in Batman Chronicles #5 in June 1996, several months before we ever see Dick drawn holding his.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Yeah yeah later Year One stories like Robin and Nightwing Year Ones will flirt with the escrima coming earlier for Dick, but the fact that in our timeline the development of Babs and Dick both using escrima sticks in their fighting styles occurred in an overlapping period is fascinating to me.
Of all the weapons to pick for them both. Dick, after returning to work in and near Gotham, picks up the fighting style that Babs acquired to allow her to fight in her wheelchair.

JayDick Week 2023 Day 1: Identity Porn
Jason’s brain felt hazy. Everything in him was saying this is a bad idea. Hell, that little voice sounded a whole lot like Talia, and for once, Jason couldn’t be bothered to care.
He’d gotten Nightwing himself pressing him down into the saddest excuse for a bed he’d seen in a long time. Those goddamn fingerstrips were pressing down into his lip, pushing at the barrier of his teeth for entry.
Jason had killed men in worse situations. He knew this. Jason looked up anyway, through his bleary lids and groaned at the way Nightwing slotted his thigh between his legs.
He was still as handsome as Jason had remembered. He’d wondered once if it was merely childhood goggles that had made Jason remember Dick like he had. To his frustration, it wasn’t. Dick’s hair was shorter, but it fell around his face in a way that framed his face well. Stubble clung to his sharpened cheekbones. He wasn’t as wide as Jason was now, but the power was obvious in his form. The black of his kevlar clung to his arms like a dream.
Dick still commanded a room by presence alone. The mean curve of his grin when they’d traded blows had made Jason chub up far too quickly. For every hit Jason had landed, Dick had returned it just as well. They curved around each other like striking vipers, panting in the night air before throwing themselves into each other again.
It was probably why Jason had let Dick press him down so easily. He needed Dick’s hands on him. He needed it in any way he’d get it; violent or revered, just as long as Jason came out black and blue like Dick’s suit.

Dick Grayson’s Nightwing Suits (1/2) - Comics Canon  Edition
Over the years Dick has had many Nightwing suits. Some of them look quite different - especially in his first decade as Nightwing - while others have gotten slight variations over the years. Dick’s most recognizable Nightwing suites can be seen above.
70s-80s suit: DISCOWING Created by: George Perez First Appearance: Tales of the Teen Titans #44 (1983)
Dick’s first Nightwing suit is the most colorful of the bunch. It owes its name to the popular disco fashion of its time. Even though the darker fabric of Dick’s first costume is often colored in a darker blue, it’s actually intended to be black. The variations of the suit mostly differentiate themselves by the height of Dick’s collar and the deepness of his neckline. On some occasions, the golden feathers already get replaced by the golden squares more prevalent to Dick’s second outfit.
The origin of Dick’s suit depends on his Nightwing origin. In some cases, it was his father's old aerial suit that later got repurposed by Alfred to make Dick a suit, while in other cases Starfire made him the suit. In Nightwing Year One, we see that Deadman also had a suit inspired by John Grayson’s aerial suit.
Tumblr media
90s suit: MULLETWING Created by: Tom Grummett First Appearance: The New Titans #88 (1992)
Dick’s second distinct Nightwing suit owes its name to his hairstyle - though on some occasions Dick had his mullet in a ponytail. While it retains the same blue-black-gold color scheme, the blue isn’t as prevalent as before. In some cases, Dick can use his golden wings as a parachute. Ironically, the golden feathers had by then been replaced by golden squares. The outfit mostly stayed the same over the years. Only his belt comes in slight variations. Though the most recent modern versions of it that appeared during the New 52 and in Future State: Teen Titans are quite different from the original suit.
Tumblr media
90s-2000s suit: FINGERSTRIPES Created by: Brian Stelfreeze First Appearance: Nightwing (1994) #1
Dick’s most famous and beloved suit was created for his first solo-comic. It rarely changed visuals in an obvious way. Mostly, the arm and shin guards were drawn differently depending on the artist - Rick Leonardi made them much more obvious and bulky, reflecting street fashion in the early 2000s, while Jim Lee slimmed them down, making them almost invisible. While on Titans, Phil Jimenez decided to color Dick’s shin guards blue. It’s one of the more obvious design deviations from the initial suit. Though this design started with Dick having a long ponytail, early in Nightwing (1996) his hair was cut, which became the most iconic version of this design.
Tumblr media
2011-2014:The New52 Red Suit Created by: Jim Lee & Cully Hammer First Appearance: Nightwing (2011) #1 (2011)
This is an awkward one. The suit is mostly known for doing away with the blue color scheme and the fingerstripes and is therefore not liked by many fans. That only changed a little when Brett Booth did not only bring back the fingerstripes but also gave Dick some nice stripes to accent his hips. Interestingly the concept art put Dick in black and blue instead of black and red. In an interview with Polygon in 2021, DC co-publisher Dan Didio said that he had several arguments with artists who wanted to make the suit blue.
Tumblr media
2016 - 2021: Rebirth Suit Created by: Javier Fernandez First Appearance: Nightwing: Rebirth #1 (2016)
When Rebirth was announced, one of the first things Dan Didio proclaimed was that Blue Nightwing would be back. While the fingerstripes remained sorely missing, the Rebirth suit grew on people. The suit remained largely consistent. The quite thin chevron-bird became thicker as time went by. Brett Booth brought the hip stripes back for this costume while he drew Dick on Titans. He also gave the costume a more distinct collar.
Tumblr media
2022 - Now: Redondo Suit Created by : Bruno Redondo First Appearance: Nightwing (2016) #88 (2022)
Redondo’s suit saw the return of the fingerstripes after about a decade without them. His first concept art introduced some other changes that sadly didn’t make it into the comics. Redondo’s primary design innovations have been in the gadgets hidden in Nightwing’s escrima.
Tumblr media
Nightwing’s Shoes Some artists like to give Dick’s Nightwing shoes some extra flourish.
Tumblr media
Nightwing’s Jackets Some artists occasionally give Nightwing a jacket, either plain or emblazoned with his crest. There are also two Elseworlds Nightwing designs that include jackets.

Are You Sure About This?

Are You Sure About This?
It started out as a joke after they all sat and watched the footage of Bruce, stripped down to a scandalously short pair of black boxers, dancing at the Iceberg Lounge while Oswald Cobblepot pleaded for him to get down. If they ever needed a distraction like that, who would be the one to step up in Bruce's place?
Tim, while quite adept at creating distractions as Robin, was underaged and on top of that had presented himself as the hyper-capable teen CEO of Wayne Enterprise. Barbara was too well-known as the daughter of ex-Commissioner Jim Gordon. Dick point blank refused.
Which left Jason.
He hadn't taken it seriously at the time. His little dance had served its purpose to embarrass Tim and get Barbara and Dick to laugh. How could he have predicted that, weeks later, he would be asked to provide a distraction when questions arose about Dick's abrupt return to Gotham and the rise of Nightwing sightings?
“Wouldn't it make more sense for you to do this?” Jason groused as he dug through his closet in search of appropriate clubbing attire. There wasn't much there that wasn't sweatpants or sweatshirts, which came in larger sizes or else were stretchy enough to accommodate his bigger frame.
“Been there, done that,” Dick flippantly responded from where he was sprawled out on his stomach on Jason's bed.
Jason tossed him an irate look. “If you're not going to help, then get the fuck out.”
“But baby, who would help you get all gussied up if not me?” Dick asked, playfully batting his eyelashes.
“Tim will be done with his meeting in an hour.”
“But I have the better fashion sense.”
Jason snorted as he threw a pair of sweatpants at Dick's face. “You wish, Mr. Mullet.”
Dick gasped dramatically and batted away the clothing. “I'll have you know that it was the height of fashion at the time!”
“Wow. You look pretty good for a man who was in his teens in the 70s.” Jason paused as he straightened up to his full height, crimson button-down shirt in hand. “God, what was I thinking by asking for your help. I should have talked to Alfred instead.”
“Do it, I dare you,” Dick said with a broad smile. His eyes glittered with untold mischief. “Can you imagine what he'd say? 'Of course, Master Jason. I would be delighted to assist.'” His mimicry of Alfred was scarily accurate, right down to the accent and dry tone. “'As you may have noticed, Master Bruce was rather fond of a simple pair of black silk boxers, but might I suggest a more suitable shade of red for your escapades this evening?'”
Jason completely stopped his search so he could turn around and stare at Dick in horror. “Please, never do that again.”
Dick laughed loudly and sprang up from the bed. “Let's see what we're working with here. I'm sure you've got something useful, like, uh...”
Jason crossed his arms over his chest and prepared for Dick to make fun of him for his wardrobe choices. As much as he teased the man for his flamboyant style, Dick always found a way to look good in whatever he was wearing.
“Ah ha! Okay, this one... and, oh! Jeans! I know you have a pair of boots that'll work, which just leaves...” Dick cut his eyes to Jason and lowered to the red shirt he was still holding onto. “You've already got the shirt. Excellent.”
When Dick backed out of the closet, he was holding a black leather jacket and a pair of jeans that Jason had stuffed away for being just a little too tight. He shoved both articles of clothing at Jason, forcing him to uncross his arms to keep it all from falling to the floor.
Jason dubiously eyed the clothes. “...are you sure about this?”
“Trust me,” Dick said, laying one hand on Jason's shoulder. “Try it all on so I can see how it looks.”
Jason turned his back to Dick as he walked to the bed, where he set down the clothing before stripping down and redressing in what the other man had picked for him. He was in the process of doing up the last two buttons on the shirt when Dick turned him around, batted away his hands, and undid the third and fourth buttons as well.
“Now the leather jacket,” Dick instructed, taking a step back so he could look Jason up and down.
Jason shrugged on the jacket, enjoying the weight of the supple leather as it settled against him. “Well?”
“Give me a turn,” Dick said, gesturing in a circle with one finger extended.
Feeling incredibly foolish, Jason did one full turn and then flopped his arms down at his side. As he remembered, the jeans fit too tightly around his hips and he was sure the button-down was a little too stuffy for what he needed to do. The jacket was fine – he actually liked that one. He'd picked it up at a thrift store during his first month back in Gotham and counted himself lucky that it'd survived through that period of time.
“Lookin' good, Jay,” Dick complimented. “Now to decide what to do with your hair.”
“What's wrong with my hair?”
What wasn't wrong with his hair? It'd grown out since the unfortunate gum incident that took place right before Bruce's death, but there was nothing he could really do to cover up the persistent white streak that came from his exposure to the Lazarus Pit. Barbara had tried to be nice about it, telling him that it made him look distinguished, but Jason knew the truth: it made him look far older than he was. And when paired with the scar running down the entirety of his face...
Dick's soft laughter brought him out of his morose thoughts and when Jason lifted his eyes, the older man was suddenly much closer than he expected. (Dick's eyes were so blue. How were they that bright?)
“Nothing's wrong with your hair, I just think it would suit your new look if we teased it up a bit,” Dick said, reaching up to do just that.
Jason flinched at the initial contact and then relaxed as Dick did little more than run his fingers through the lengthening strands of hair. He reflexively swallowed as the older man shuffled a smidgen closer. “Dick?”
“Hm?”
“Do you really think all of this will work? I mean... Look at me. I'm not... I'm not like you and Bruce. I can go in and act the part, sure, but that's not enough.”
Dick paused for a moment, his brow crinkled as he studied Jason's face. “What do you mean, not like me and Bruce?”
“Pretty,” Jason said bluntly, moving away from Dick. He just needed a little space. A little bit of breathing room that didn't involve taking in the warm scent of Dick's cologne. “I'm not blind to the way people look at me and move out of the way because I make them nervous. I just... I said it as a joke, you know? Yeah, let's send in Jason to strip down and dance at Cobblepot's lounge so he can get himself kicked out and make headlines! What a riot!”
“Okay, I'm going to stop you there,” Dick spoke up before Jason could take it further. “First, you – no, hang on. First, if you really feel uncomfortable doing this, then don't. Yeah, I'm kind of sick of being the one who goes out and shakes my ass and has to deal with uncomfortable comments about it, but I'll keep doing it if it means no one else has to experience the same thing. Second, there's nothing wrong with the way you look.”
Jason scoffed and rolled his eyes. “Sure.”
“I'm serious. Jason, you're one of the most handsome people I know. You are! And I can guarantee that if you go out tonight, dressed like this, someone will take notice in a good way. Fifty bucks says you leave the bar with at least three phone numbers by the end of the night,” Dick said.
“Pretty sure the whole point of this is to cause enough of a ruckus that old Oswald kicks me out,” Jason reminded him.
“That's why you get them before putting on a show. Then you just have remember which number belongs to which person.”
Maybe that had been Dick's experience whenever he went out, but it wasn't the same for Jason. He attracted a specific type – one that he didn't personally care for – and even if he did find someone he thought was handsome, they still wouldn't be someone he'd ask out.
The truth was, he'd been harboring a crush on Dick for years. He didn't like to dwell on it. That would just ruin the easy camaraderie they'd formed since his return and he wasn't going to take a chance with that. It was enough that every now and then he'd become struck with awe over the color of Dick's eyes or the way he's cheeks dimpled when he smiled or how effortless he made his flips across the Gotham sky look when they went out at night.
There was only one person who's attention Jason really wanted.
He put on a brave smile. “So, you think I'm handsome?”
Jason expected a joke. For Dick to laugh it off with some witty statement or compare him to Adonis or some shit like that, but instead he got genuine smile that made Dick's eyes crinkle up at the corners.
“You have no idea,” Dick said softly. He reached up to fix the open collar of Jason's shirt, his fingertips brushing against bare skin. “There. Just pick your favorite pair of boots and you're good to go.”
It would've been easy to pull Dick in closer. To lean down for a kiss. To just hold onto him and express his thanks or even reveal the way he felt. But Jason did nothing as Dick stepped back and began talking about the different things he could do to annoy Oswald Cobblepot – it wouldn't make enough of an impact if he just jumped up on the sculpture and copied what Bruce had already done. It needed to be something new. Something to show off Jason's best assets and moves.
Jason listened to it all, silently mourning the loss of a perfect opportunity.
There was always next time.

Dick Grayson, but if someone else beat me to that, Lestat.
Let's do both!
Dick Grayson:
Tumblr media
"They are sooooo cool looking" is mostly for his classic fingerstripe Nightwing costume, which is one of my favorite superhero costumes to this day 💕
"everyone but me is wrong about them" - not literally lmao, but I have DEFINITELY gotten frustrated at a lot of Bad Dick Grayson Takes in my day, and in multiple different directions! I feel like he's a character people often relate very personally to, so a lot of us come up with wildly different interpretations of him. It's actually taken me a while to get to a point of realizing my take ISN'T always The One True Correct One.
But actually, it is though.
"Wasted potential" should just be automatic for all DC characters, pour one out.
"If they were real I would marry them" + "they're like a blorbo to me" Look I don't think either of those is gonna come as a surprise to anyone who's followed me for a while. He's arguably one of my all-time biggest blorbos.
"They're deeper than they seem" - Much like Babs, Dick gets reduced to a few obvious traits far too often. I particularly get excited when I see his workaholic, perfectionist side acknowledged, because I think it's such a fundamental aspect of him and too often gets ignored in favor of "He's the happy, well-adjusted one."
"I like them enough to project my own issues onto them" - less so now! But back in the day, I think I DEFINITELY used Dick and Bruce's relationship to work through some of my own daddy issues.
"They got done DIRTY by the fans" - listen, I think we all know I mean SPECIFIC fans here and I think we all know what I mean, so let's leave it at that, shall we?
Lestat:
Tumblr media
"wasted potential" - This is by no means a new complaint, but it's generally acknowledged in the fandom that Lestat's character development took a nosedive somewhere around the fourth book and never recovered, particularly since the narrative stopped holding him responsible for practically anything he did.
"if they were real I would be afraid of them" - I mean. He eats people. 😂 Also, see the next bullet point...
"wow! they are a horrible person" - Listen, it's "horrible person (affectionate)", but I don't think anyone can argue that he IS. He's The Worst! He makes absolutely horrendous life choices and spends large portions of the books making things actively worse for everyone around him! But he's always super ENTERTAINING about it, and underneath it all, I do think he's... uhhh... trying?
Look, he's trying SOMETIMES, okay.
"they work better as part of a dynamic" - I think Lestat is at his best when he's playing off of complementary characters, which is why I think his family dynamic with Louis and Claudia is probably the strongest part of the series (and to a lesser degree, his dynamic with characters like Armand and Gabrielle). By contrast, I think a weakness of the later books is that it's far too often "Lestat interacting with the latest OC no one cares about", and there are EXTREMELY diminishing returns there.
"they got too much screen time" - it's not exactly that I don't think Lestat should get screen time, or that I dislike having Lestat as the main character (when it's well done, I actually find his PoV really fun to read), but I think turning it into The Lestat Series in a way that's often at the expense of other characters wasn't a good direction for the series, and that's what I find a pity.

As excited as I am about fingerstripes returning, if the Nightwing book continues to be ableist with it’s treatment of Babs (i’m gonna be hopeful and say that maybe by the time of the issue that brings back fingerstripes things with her could be in a better place, but if they aren’t) please don’t let a cool costume design be the thing that sways you into supporting it.

Future State: Nightwing # 1. Writer Andrew Constant, art Nicola Scott. (2021)
Tumblr media
The Future State: Teen Titans story takes place a few years after Nightwing, but there's also a flashback with Dick in a suit that looks a lot like his current, but with a T on the belt. Future State: Teen Titans # 1. Writer Tim Sheridan, art Rafa Sandoval and Jordi Tarragona. (2021)
Tumblr media
Teen Titans Academy # 1. A prequel title for the Future Staten Teen Titans that, honestly, I don’t expect will ever come to pass because I don’t believe a comic book company will or can tie their main comic book line to a future set in stone...
But anyway, it’s pretty much the current (2021) suit and the same as seen in the Furure State flashbacks. The old Titans have a T on their ordinary suits. Writer Tim Sheridan, art Rafa Sandoval. (2021)
Tumblr media
The Man who Flies. in Batman Black & White (2021) # 5. Story and art Jamal Campell. A version of the Rebirth suit with glider wings – and it's probably those wings which gives the suit stripes on the side of his torso in a lighter colour.

Tumblr media Tumblr media
A number of costume options for Nightwing in the Gotham Knights game (2022).
Tumblr media
Matching biker jacket in Nightwing vol 4 # 93 (2022).
Tumblr media
Another version with glider wings in Nightwing vol 4 # 94 (2022).
Tumblr media
Nightwing vol 4 # 104. (Dick gets a temporary new suit when he is tempted by a bad guy with the powers of Superman.)
Tumblr media Tumblr media
In Batman Superman: World’s Finest # 21 (2023), main universe Batman and Superman visits Earth-22, known from Kingdom Come where Dick was called Red Robin. Here, he is called Nightwing and the artist Dan Mora wrote on X/former Twitter that this takes place before Dick became Red Robin. So there appears a retcon of Dick’s history on Earth-22 has taken place.
Tumblr media
(At least, it would make his daughter’s codename Nightstar more logical, if her parents were Starfire and Nightwing rather than Robin/Red Robin. And in the comic The Kingdom: Nightstar from 1999, a younger Dick is seen with a Nightwing-like suit.)

hello sir can i pls haz recs of your favorite batman storylines? i must read
Boy howdy can you!
The Cult (Starlin, Wrightson)
Tumblr media
I don’t see The Cult get talked about nearly as often it should be, which is a damn shame because the Bruce whump is top notch, the villain is both creepy and surprisingly realistic, and Jason is the undisputed MVP.
Year One (Miller, Mazzucchelli)
Tumblr media
The Dark Knight Returns is the one that tends to get the most focus in popular consciousness, but IMHO Year One is the superior Batman story. It’s Frank Miller writing, so many of the usual caveats apply, but it’s a more restrained Miller, and with David Mazzucchelli on pencils, it’s much nicer to look at.
The Long Halloween (Loeb, Sale)
Tumblr media
And speaking of noir... I think I like this one even more than Year One. It’s got the same moody atmosphere, with a good old-fashioned murder mystery on top, and it’s one of the relatively few stories to make the traditional organized crime side of the rogues gallery genuinely compelling.
Terror (Legends of the Dark Knight #137-#141) (Moench, Gulacy)
Tumblr media
A pretty good Hugo Strange story, and a terrific Scarecrow story, with Catwoman thrown in for good measure. A crazy four-way back-and-forth where everyone gets ample opportunity to shine.
No Man’s Land (Various)
Tumblr media
Now this one’s a hefty one. First comes the ebola. Then comes the earthquake. Then comes a decree from congress that the city is too far gone and it’s easier to just declare it Not America Anymore and call it a day. It sounds stupid, and it is, but it’s fun stupid, and that’s what comics are all about. Word to the wise: this one’s like a year long without including Cataclysm, and is spread out over about fifteen different titles, so find a collected version or bring a reader’s guide. There’s also a very good novelization by Greg Rucka that cuts out a bunch of the supplemental stuff if you want to simplify things. This one’s also the first appearance of my girl Cass Cain.
Hush (Batman #608-#619) (Loeb, Lee)
Tumblr media
Another Jeph Loeb mystery plot, although this one is less a mystery and more a gauntlet; the plot is mostly just there to string together a series of fights and character moments, all of which are fun and engaging. It’s not as stylish as TLH, but it’s very easy to read. I was halfway through before I remembered I’d already gotten a sample panel.
The Black Mirror (Detective Comics #871-#881) (Snyder, Jock, Francavilla)
Tumblr media
We really didn’t get Dickbats for long enough. I might not care for Morrison’s Batman & Robin, but we did get some great stories out of this era (see also: Streets of Gotham) and I feel like the “two Batmen” conceit could have been carried through a couple more years before he went back to the fingerstripes. For one, the villains were consistently pretty creepy, like Junior up there. And Dick wrestling with a legacy he never wanted but feels obligated to live up to anyway gives us that good good angst.

Hey, do you have Mary and John Grayson headcanons?👉👈
Eh why not, let’s add some Lol
- At social gatherings and fancy parties, Mary can be one of the most socially awkward people even from a distance. For instance during one such party, John and her tried training her to interact a normal guest to a scenario where someone approaches her. All John said was “Hey there, cutie. How’s the shindig treating you?” and next thing, Mary bursts out an awkward laugh so loud it got everyone’s attention; something like this
- One of John’s favorite things to do is watch old 1950s B-Movies, good ones but also ones especially bad, and make jokes at either the acting, weird plots, special effects, and everything in between as said movies go on. Mary and Dick often love to join him and this unique spin to family movie nights, the former often times joining in on the riffing. Dick at the time on the other hand was too young to grasp the fine art of movie riffing and it won’t be until years later during his teenage years he picked up on it.
- Out of the Graysons, all of them snore but John snores the loudest by a large margin. Though it doesn’t bother Dick and not even Mary despite the latter sharing the bed with him.
- During their dating years, John always allows Mary the freedom to talk to other male friends and improve her socially awkward tendencies, being one of the most chill guys you can hang out with. That said, being rude to Mary, disrespect her personal space and the most severe of catcalling her will end with John glaring at the perpetrator. About 90% of the time, the glare causes them to back off, the other 10% can result in fisticuffs as John defends the honor of his girlfriend with his fists and acrobatics.
- In an alternate world where Mary survives the ‘Accident’ but John sadly doesn’t, Dick and her move into an apartment not too far from the circus grounds, living among Gotham’s local Romani community. Mary quickly secures a job as a local gymnast at a nearby workout center, teaching younger generations her acrobatics. Unlike the main timeline, she’s the one who finds out about foul play at the circus and makes a resolve to take down Boss Zucco in both avenging her late husband and making sure no such tragedy happens again. As such, after receiving martial arts training from both local dojos and taking online lessons, she modifies a prototype of her circus outfit to something that can protect her when fighting crime, adding a domino mask, pockets for carrying whatever she needs and replacing the performing slippers with standard combat boots. Since her main outfit colors where white (she also recently dyed her hair white to further maintain the color consistency), light grey and black for the pants and boots and having a wing like skirt, her secret hero work earned her the nickname ‘Snow Owl’, especially since she first became prominent in the winter of that year. Eventually, about half a year later, Dick found out about this and offered in being her partner with a crime fighting suit of his own, thus this world’s version of Robin the Boy Wonder. - Conversely, in an AU where John was the sole survivor of the ‘Accident’, neither Mary nor Dick, he resigns from the circus and enlists in the Marine Corps. Many years later, after both intense training and tours of combat duty, John returns to the US, settling in Gotham. At this point, since Boss Zucco still reigns supreme of the Gotham criminal underground, the rise of The Rouges Gallery was far less pronounced and grandiose than in the main timeline, Zucco being still not only the top big bad but also practically untouchable, not even the GVPD under Commissioner Gordon nor the Batman can take him down. John however, taking inspiration from both Batman and Robin Hood, and with his military grade training, vows to do just that. Wearing an near all black Kevlar combat suit with a red bird emblem on his torso and red fingerstripes, also a domino mask with red lenses, armed with police batons and a grapple gun built out of modified Model 1887; John will take on crime fighting himself, protecting the innocents and dealing justice to evildoers through fear and utter punishment. As far as he’s concerned, John Grayson fell alongside his family that night, call him the ‘Red Owl’.
- On note of Batman, in a ‘Flying Graysons Both Alive’ AU, John and Bruce are often cordial and cooperative regarding Dick and his life choices in crime fighting. That said, at family gatherings, it’s not uncommon for the two to get into a LOT of wit and banter, John often being the one to both to start it and refuse to finish it until Bruce admits defeat. When a disagreement between Bruce and the Graysons gets serious however, Mary is the one that does the talking; her tranquil demeanor yet hidden ferocity in her scathing words and statements leave even the Batman being intimidated into silence.
