Beautiful, relaxing music and distant whale noises; some scary enemies, so if you have thalassophobia this might not be the one for you. Very calming otherwise though, and the creator is coming out with an enemy-free version soon in which you can just float around to the music!
Cat Snack Bar: an adorable app where you operate different business venues with the help of chubby, adorable cats! You check in periodically to collect money and update your venue, but otherwise it doesn't require much brain power. A very cute game to help you relax!
Webtoon: a comic app that allows you to browse thousands of creative and often relaxing webcomics! My personal favorite is Cursed Princess Club; it's a very clever and happy one with a lot of good messages!
1010!: a fun little game where you match up blocks. Fairly simple and satisfying, and you can update your backgrounds to fun designs!
Papa's Cupcakeria: a relaxing and satisfying game where you make cupcakes! And of course there’s a whole series of games in the Papa Louie universe to choose from that are fun and happy :)

Y/N hid her face from the bright kitchen lights beneath the canopy of her hoodie. She sat curled in on herself at the table, elbows mashed into the old wooden top, shoulders tight and high. Her hands were balled up and hidden inside the long, warm sleeves, her knuckles smushed into her cheeks.
A cooling mug of coffee stared at her but she ignored it, trying to piece together her dreams while straining to keep the full memory of them at bay.
Sam whistled as he entered, shocked to find her already awake and the coffee pot full.
“Morning.”
Y/N stirred and looked up with a faint smile. “Howdy.”
“Rough night?” he asked, grabbing a mug.
She shrugged. “I guess.”
Steam rose to greet him and Sam took a quick sip before rounding the table to sit across from her. He settled in and frowned at her sweatshirt.
“You stole my hoodie again, I see.”
Y/N laughed awkwardly, caught red-handed. “What? No. This is mine.” Quickly, she folded her arms across the chest to hide the giant Stanford logo.
Sam pursed his lips and shook his head. “Just don’t get anything on it.”
Y/N grinned. “I promise.”
“I don’t know why you like that so much. It’s old and thin and-”
“Feels like you.”
He startled and a blush flooded his cheeks.
“I don’t know,” she said, sighing as a confession ran free. “I had another nightmare last night and I… wanted to be close to you, I guess.”
Sam held her gaze and sighed. “I’m sorry. Keep it as long as you need.”
“Thanks.”
They sat for a long moment, hands wrapped around coffee mugs, eyes not daring to meet again.
Sam cleared his throat after counting to thirty in his head. “Do you want to talk about it? You seem really out of it the last few days.”
“Nah.” She took a sip of cold coffee and grimaced. “Maybe. I don’t know. I feel stupid. They’re just dreams.”
When she looked up again, his face was caked with blood. It dripped from a gasp at his hairline, poured from his nose, his ear. She gasped and looked away, beating the image out of her mind.
“No reason to feel stupid,” Sam assured her. “Besides, if anyone knows about disturbing dreams…” He paused and waved at himself, making her laugh gently.
“Yeah.”
“So, go on.”
The coffee was bitter and smelled like rotting wood. She held her breath and felt the hay shift beneath her feet, saw the dust particles dancing in the streaks of light inside the barn, heard the crack of bones.
“Y/N?”
Shaking herself, she focused on the cuff of her sleeve. It was thinning around the bottom and stretched out; the elastic was old and spent. She took a breath and chewed her lip.
“What did it feel like?” she asked, suddenly breaking the silence.
Sam sat up. “What did what feel like?”
“Well… You told me you used to have visions. Like, psychic visions. What did they feel like?”
He shifted, uncomfortable. “I don’t know, Y/N. That was over ten years ago…”
“Yes, but you have to remember something.” She pushed her coffee aside and set her palms down on the table, grounding herself. “These dreams feel so real, Sam. They’re not just regular, run of the mill nightmares. I’m not being chased by clowns or stuffed into a magician’s trunk… They’re real and scary and I wake up terrified.”
His brows raised and a smirk lit his pink lips. “Magician’s trunk?”
“Clowns?” She countered, shutting him up. He nodded for her to continue and she did. “They’re bloody and so intense, and they won’t go away when I wake up. I can feel them sneaking up on me like some kinda ghost in a haunted house. You know when you can feel a ghost coming on? That’s what it feels like. And then I see things… I can smell them, hear them… They’re all around me.”
Sam took a deep breath and sat back. He ran a hand through his hair and tucked it back behind his ear, thinking.
Y/N was impatient. “So?”
He shrugged. “Sometimes, dreams can linger in our subconscious. You do have a very hyperactive imagination. Maybe-”
“I’m not imagining things, Sam. I’m like…” She shook her hands in the air, unable to find the words. “Inside it. Emersed in the dream. It’s unsettling.”
He raised a palm, begging for patience. “I get it, I do.”
“Do you? I can feel blood in my mouth, Sam. I can taste it.”
A black bruise began to blossom beneath his eye and she cringed, looking quickly away lest the feeling take over.
“Look, when I had my visions, they… they were like that. Very intense, very real. But they stopped right away. Nothing lingered, nothing snuck up on me. But they were very strong, clear visions. They hurt. I felt every second of them pounding through my skull.”
Y/N huffed and hid her hands in her sleeves again, closing herself off. “Well, maybe I’m having something like that.”
Sam shook his head. “It’s unlikely. Mine stopped as soon as we killed the demon, and… well, you’re not-”
“Not special?”
“No, I don’t mean that. I mean-”
“I don’t have special demon blood powers?”
“Yes.”
“How do you know! Maybe I’m one of the special kids too. There were others, you said. Maybe-”
Again, Sam shook his head and held up a hand, calming her down. “Y/N, it’s very unlikely. I think you’re just stressed and your subconscious is leaking into daily life. I wouldn’t worry about it too much.”
She looked up from beneath the awning of her hood and felt her stomach flip. The blood was back, dripping from cuts along his face and neck; his teeth were stained with it, his shirt torn and filthy.
“Yeah,” she said softly, giving up. “You’re probably right. Just stress.”
She pushed up from the table and turned away, one foot on the bottom step before he tried again.
“Really, I wouldn’t worry too much, Y/N.”
She looked back over her shoulder and tried not to cry as the gash in his throat opened up again.
“Yeah,” she said, breathing away the bloody vision. “Thanks.”

So we went to see that new horror movie MEN
I didn't know much about it and only seen one
trailer and thought it looked kinda interestingly
creepy. I didn't know it was an A24 thing.
I usually don't really like their horror movies
being at times they are just weird for the sake
of being weird.
You can argue "their Elevated Horror"
all you want but if things descend
into nonsensical craziness in the last 20-30mins
that doesn't seem to have anything to do with the
last hour/hour and a half of great story/plot
then I feel there is something wrong
in the words from Johnny Depp's character in
the 2004 movie Secret Window
"Mort: You know, the only thing that matters
is the ending. It's the most important part of
the story, the ending."
and I always feel A24 movies usually fuck that up 😄
anyway…
we go in and when the movie starts I seen the
A24 logo on the screen and I'm like "oh no.." 🙄
so we're there now and the movie takes place
in England and this woman rents a country house
for the week/weekend in this very small town/village
to spend some time away
after the accidental death of her husband.
what leads up to his death is actually explained
through a series of flashbacks.
so she goes there for the peace and quiet to help
her move forward from her loss.
she rents it from this very stereotypical British
guy who owns the property and I felt he was very
nice and genuine when you meet him at the first of
the movie.
As she is enjoying her time there things start
to take a more horrific turn as she begins to be
stalked by this weird naked guy living in the woods
and then the men in the village start to torment
her.
the movie is very good for the first 70mins
or so it is creepy and terrifying and you can
feel and see her fear on screen which I thought
was really well done. there is some nice
atmospheric scariness in here at times
and you are watching and are wondering what
is going on and what is going to happen next,
will she survive or will they get her
its kind of intense stuff.
then they ruin it..and on comes the "wtf??"
for the last 20-30mins like seriously the
person I went with actually said to me
"what kind of fucking movie did you bring us to??"
like I guess you would call it the "birthing sequence"
its like one the most fucked up things.
there are so many questions like who is the naked
guy? what does he represent? does he represent Men in
general? and the guys in the village that she encounters
do they represent all the abusers/assholes/perverts
that she met through her life? or do they
represent all the abusers/assholes/perverts in life in
general?
but back to the "birthing sequence" what does that have
to do with the actual movie? I'm sure it has some weird
profound meaning but I'm not sure what it is?
is it some type of metaphor? am I suppose to understand
it and relate to her through this being we are women?
or is it more about something like generational
misogyny and toxic masculinity and stuff like that?
its a very weird and kind of disturbing sequence
but it is very well done lol the visual effects for
this movie were really nice and well done
the thing with the knife and the mail slot in the
door was pretty cool. also the music is very haunting
and the cinematography and all that was really
nice it was beautifully shot.
so I don't know know if I would recommend it
to anyone? like I said its a great horror movie
up to like the last half hour or so when everything
goes off the rails and it no longer makes sense anymore
but watch it if you are interested.

Kuroo likes Halloween
He’s not super hyped up about it, but he loves playing scary pranks on his friends and then using Halloween as an excuse :)
He tells Lev and Inuoka that the boy’s toilet on the 2nd floor is haunted and do they believe him?? Absolutely, yes.
He doesn’t mind going on spooky dates, either!
In fact, he’ll drag you to watch a horror film or stay up all night exchanging scary stories
He would also probably take you and the team “ghost hunting” around the school after volleyball practice when it’s dark and no one’s around
Nerd boy with his nerd costumes
He doesn’t want to spend too much effort or money in a costume he’s only going to wear once this year, but he doesn’t want a lame costume, either
He’d love to get matching costumes with you!!
But all his suggestions will be either memey or nerdy costumes
The firsts that come to mind are the ‘woman screaming at cat’ (he’ll be the cat) or he’ll get you both matching t-shirts with the elements copper (Cu) and tellurium (Te) printed on them “so when we stand next to each other, everyone can see how CuTe we are”
He is also not opposed to character costumes like Rick and Morty or Hogwarts wizards/witches
Kuroo will go to a party with you and slip away for a while the second you both get there with no explanation and then very unsuspiciously hang around you all night
Later you find out he has signed you both up for the costume contest
The both of you are definitely not the best dressed ((read below: suga and his s/o)) but strut on the stage like it’s a fashion show
Or if you refuse to go up and participate because you were involuntarily signed up, Kuroo will still go up alone, pick up a microphone with a deadpan face and say “this is supposed to be a matching costume but there were some technical difficulties” you brought this on yourself, kuroo
Haunted houses and horror films are definitely his favourite things about Halloween!
I feel like Kuroo isn’t afraid of the ghosts and stuff, but he doesn’t handle being jumpscared well
When he gets shocked while in a haunted house or during a movie, he’ll yelp out a bunch of swears lmao
But he loves the temporary adrenaline rush and 10/10 will do it again
If you tease him and call him a scaredy cat, he’ll pout
And you can expect him trying to sneak up on you and scare you the next day
iwaizumi hajime
Iwa doesn’t care much for Halloween
He gets a little annoyed at all the Halloween-themed products that stores come out with because he thinks it’s just a marketing scheme to sell some overpriced shit (it is)
But if you want to go try out pumpkin desserts or visit a haunted house, he’ll indulge you just because he loves spending time with you no matter what you two end up doing
He’s usually not one to dress up for Halloween
The most he’s done is put on a t-shirt with a superhero logo on it 🙄
Oikawa has tried multiple years to get him in “matching best friend costumes” but Iwa has never once agreed
But if you pout a little a few weeks before Halloween, bribe him with some kisses, catch him in a good mood, he’ll say yes (make sure to say no takebacks)
Deciding on a costume consists of you giving suggestions and Iwa saying yes or no to them
He doesn’t want to do something very costume-y, he prefers to wear an outfit that can pass as a regular outfit but it’s based on a character from a movie or series
E.g. Kim and Ron from Kim Possible, Ash/Misty and Brock from Pokemon (Iwa would be perfect as Brock??? he’s already got the hair down fdkjs), Sandy and Danny from Grease (show off his arms yes)
Iwaizumi will go to a Halloween party because all his friends are going lol
Oikawa will be devastated when he sees Iwa wearing matching costumes with you and this is partly why he agreed to do it with you
He’ll keep you by his side or follow you around for most of the party because “the costume won’t make sense if he’s standing alone” or whatever sir just say you’re too shy to do it alone
If you want to stay home, he’s fine with it too
Whether you want to have a movie marathon, bake something, carve pumpkins, anything really, he’ll do it with you
Lowkey wants to watch scary films so he can “protect you” if you get scared
Like if you’re squeezing his arm during a scary scene he’ll be like “it’s not that scary, you wimp” but also he’s pulling you closer and putting his arm around you and his heart is fluttering-
so in conclusion: iwa is a simp for you
Bonus: one time you came over to his house and his mom showed you a picture of 6-year-old Iwaizumi dressed up as godzilla for Halloween💖
azumane asahi
Halloween isn't his favourite holiday for um.. personal reasons
Once October comes around, Asahi is already being tormented by some of his friends (it’s suga) scaring him
He doesn’t despise everything about Halloween, though - in fact, there are some things he really loves about Halloween
Like going to a pumpkin festival, baking sweet treats together, enjoying a walk in the park with the pretty autumn scenery, or choosing and DIY-ing costumes
Asahi loves the costume planning with you!!
The both of you will take days or even weeks in advance finding the perfect costume and figuring out how to make them
He definitely prefers the cute costumes over gory costumes
Some of the costume ideas are Little Red Riding Hood and the Big Bad Wolf, Cheshire Cat/Alice and the Mad Hatter/White Rabbit from Alice in Wonderland, or characters from the Wizard of Oz
i don’t know why all of these are from children’s fantasy stories im sorry-
You and Asahi will take turns going to each other’s houses after school or on weekends and working on your costumes together (It’s his favourite part (´▽`ʃ♡ƪ))
If he goes to a Halloween party, it’ll probably be a small gathering, such as a potluck with the Karasuno volleyball team
Everyone will be in awe of how cute you two look!!
If the team decides to switch off the lights and leave a flashlight on, gather around and tell spooky stories, he’ll want you next to him and you two will be holding onto each other
the first and second years are so jealous of their senpai and his cute s/o
Haunted houses are a no-no, sorry
Asahi doesn’t mind staying in either!
If you have a movie marathon, you guys binge Harry Potter or Studio Ghibli movies (they have magic so they’re Halloween movies right?)
Though if you’re a horror movie fanatic, he’ll try to watch a scary film with you
He will also have a lot of snacks! And the best hot chocolate you will ever have
I can also imagine Asahi doing your nails? And maybe he’ll let you do his nails too
You two make cute designs of little ghosts and pumpkins but don’t let each other see until it’s finished so it’s a surprise
You share lots of cuddles and kisses afterwards, and Asahi can’t wait to spend another sweet Halloween with you🥺🥰
Bonus: Kageyama showed up in his volleyball uniform and said his costume is a volleyball player :)?

Suga loves Halloween!!
It’s an excuse to have fun, cute dates under the guise of “keeping up the tradition”
Even before Halloween, he’ll take you on cafe dates to a different place each week to try out the pumpkin specials
You two will make jack-o-lanterns and then compare to see who did a better job, which could potentially end up in a tickle fight
This boy is going all out with the costumes!!
Maybe it’s the mom instincts, but he’s not settling on some cheap online/store-bought costume and he’ll DIY for both his s/o and himself
It’ll be an iconic couple and something very chic
Like you know Neil Patrick Harris and David Burtka‘s family halloween costumes? That’s the vibes you two have
Examples of your costumes include: Morticia & Gomez from The Addams Family, Jack and Sally from The Nightmare Before Christmas, Sailor Moon and Tuxedo Mask (plss)
You help each other put on each other’s costumes and make-up <333
Both of you will go to a halloween party, even if it’s just a few close friends gathering, and you two are gonna be the IT couple
your outfits and makeup will be on point all through the night and everyone will be so jealous💖
He’d probably take you trick or treating to a few houses for fun tbh HAHA
Your neighbours open up their front door to see.. Two grown ass children?? With costumes looking like they were professionally made??? Grinning and holding out their trick or treat bags?????
They’ll be so confused they end up giving you guys candy anyway
Suga is also a horror fanatic!
If you let him, he’ll drag you to a haunted house attraction
He’s the type to laugh at the scares :)
But he’ll hold your hand and let you cling to his arm if you’re scared, trying to reassure you
He’ll also arrange a horror movie marathon + sleepover!
After you get back, clean up and change into your comfiest pyjamas, Suga has already set up the living room
The couch is stacked with pillows and blankets, some of the lights are switched off, there’s a large bowl of popcorn and your trick-or-treat loot on the table and the movies are already queued on the TV
If you’re not a big fan of horror movies, he’ll opt for less scary but still Halloween-themed movies like Corpse Bride, The Nightmare Before Christmas or Coraline (coraline’s kinda creepy but so good), or the “horror/thriller” movies that are just bad so you both can laugh at them
You and Suga snuggle under the blankets with pillows all around, munching on your snacks and watching the movies until you both fall asleep together

Debut: Super Mario 64
You know what I’ve been thinking about lately? Super Mario 64. Haven’t we all, really? Between all the recent datamines and general online discussion, I can’t help but wonder about Super Mario 64!
Something I don’t think Mario 64 gets enough appreciation for, is being the birthplace of our beloved Whomps! At least, I certainly belove them. Don’t you? We’ve covered pretty much every “Thwomp” variant in the past, and sure, Whomps may be nowhere near the “obscure” side of enemies, but a splendid design is a good thing to appreciate anytime!
Not only is this their debut, but they get a whole stage themed around them: the Whomp’s Fortress, if by “fortress” you mean a vague collection of scattered obstacles and platforms floating in the sky, like most 64 stages! That sure is a lot of... textures! My favorite part is the little paddling pool near the bottom.
And who could forget the Whomp in all their original polygonal glory? Clearly they just wanted to make an enemy who is just a rectangle with a texture on top, yet the design had all its charm even back then! The sunken eyes with glowing red pupils, the H-shaped mouth with the crooked teeth... it’s very cute, in an ugly way. And on the back, their weak spot is a crack with a bandage on top! Adorable!
If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it- that’s why the Whomp has only really had a few subtle redesigns over the years! When they appeared in Mario 64 DS, they looked just a little bit nicer to look at. They were also in New Super Mario Bros. DS, using the same model- a 3D only enemy in a 2D game, how strange indeed! Their first appearance in a new mainline game in 10 whole years- and it probably just happened because they wanted to reuse assets.
Another redesign? Don’t mind if I do! The Whomp’s grand return to the third dimension happened in Mario Galaxy 2, really cementing them (hah) as a modern Mario classic. This time, they’re huge! And square-ish! And uh, their eyes aren’t wacky anymore. No longer having a band-aid, they instead have a big ground-pound symbol on their back now, which must be just awful, right? Can you imagine having a big logo emblazoned on your back which says “crush me with your butt here”?
This here is their artwork from Mario Party 9. It’s the same as the art from Galaxy 2, but their eyes are glowy now. I just thought this was funny. But I’m getting ahead of myself here! Before I talk about Mario Party, I need to talk about...
Their monarch, the big bad Whomp King! He’s just... He’s just a big Whomp. He acts just like other Whomps, but he’s big and takes three hits. What’s totally memorable about this boss, though, is the villain monologue he gives before fighting!
“It makes me so mad! We build your houses, your castles, we pave your roads, and still you walk all over us. Do you ever say thank you? No! Well, you're not going to wipe your feet on me. I think I'll crush you just for fun! Do you have a problem with that? Just try to pound me, wimp! Ha!”
Uh oh! Looks like Mario’s world has a little problem with under-valuing essential workers! Good thing our world has nothing like that. Well, jokes aside, it’s a pretty cheeky nod at how the Whomps are made of stone- but one has to wonder much of this tragic backstory is serious! It must be a pretty nasty lot in life, huh?
Don’t feel bad- in 64 DS and Mario Galaxy 2, the Whomp King got a snazzy new crown! At least someone appreciates him a bit!
Well, it wasn’t just him: Galaxy 2′s Throwback Galaxy was one big reimagining of Whomp’s Fortress, meaning this is probably the most Whomp-focused game released in the past decade. The music was remixed, the boss fight was revamped- all in all, a lovely throwback indeed!
And the Whomp has basically just... stuck around! You may have noticed the image at the top (from Super Mario Party) has a slightly different design, being a little more rectangular with smaller, thinner eyes and a more angular mouth! They definitely redesigned the Whomp again at some point, but I couldn’t tell you exactly when... Either way, I’m glad they’re here for good!
Not that Whomps ever really went anywhere! In the years between Super Mario 64 and its remake, Whomps survived almost exclusively in Mario Party (and other spin-offs), functioning mainly as roadblocks that don’t allow the player to pass!
Which brings me to my final point- between their design and this function, the Whomp is most likely based on the mythological yōkai called... the Nurikabe! And since I’d love nothing more, I’ll now go into a long-winded tangent about what the Nurikabe is, and... Hey, wait!! Come back! It’ll be interesting, I swear! Don’t cut off the post! Hey-
Yeah, yeah. You’re all sick of my long-winded yōkai posts. But I’m happy you joined me here, even if it was out of pity. Let’s talk about the Nurikabe!
Look at this big guy! What a card! Nurikabe literally translates to plaster wall, and they take the form of a big invisible wall that blocks the way of travellers at night. Since they’re invisible, they naturally don’t have many illustrations- leave it to Shigeru Mizuki to depict them as a large, goofy-looking slab of stone! This Nurikabe joined the main cast of the GeGeGe no Kitaro manga, and thus quickly became a cornerstone (haha) of their popular depictions!
(To be fair, there does exist an old illustration of the Nurikabe as a strange, lumpy dog thing... but I’m not MUCH of a fan? I think a literal stone wall is so much more charming!)
Come on, look at this! What could be better?
Ōkami has a rather lovely Nurikabe-looking guy! Though his design is splendid, if you’ve played Ōkami you likely remember him as “the extremely frustrating memory puzzle” or “the memory puzzle that is literally scientifically impossible for the human brain to solve”. Shame!
Yo-kai Watch has the Murikabe, a.k.a “Noway” in the English version! “Muri” means “no way”. So like, it’s a pun. Hoho.
Nioh’s Nurikabe is quite scary, but also rather cool! Don’t you think? I still know very little about Nioh, but whenever I look at its yōkai I think “Dang! That’s cool!”, and I’m right, and it is cool.
The Super Sentai series has two whole Nurikabe monsters, each based on a different Nurikabe look! While the latter is quite cool, I’m in love with the former and its weird, grungy brick wall look! It’s like, the dictionary definition of Gnarly! Though I know very little about tokukatsu shows, I think its kind of fascinating how creative they can get with designing humanoid monsters suits!
You may be wondering: was this entire post just a thinly-veiled excuse for me to talk about the Nurikabe? And to that I say:

Ben Schwartz x Reader
A/N : Thank you for you request ! Even if quarantine isn’t a fun time I try my best to make it light and stick on what I think a quarantine with Ben will look like. I remember from his interview that he usually wake up early and he was eating a lot of frozen Reese cup so I try to incorporate it in there. I struggle for a while with the “ Spending time together” not knowing if you was intended romantically or just friendly, so I just mix them up a little bit except for the end. I hope you will like it and let me know as an anon or not !
* I tried my best to put a pandemic time line following the evolution on the quarantine rules, but since every country had different quarantine time and outside rules it could happen that it didn’t fit, so please excuse me in case of mistake.
* English is not my first language, I tried really hard to correct myself but, I hope you will excuse me if some mistakes are still there.

When you had wished to pass more time with Ben, you never thought at a quarantine in an international pandemic. When the news broke that the virus was spreading, pushing the government to close the border and every public place. You were discussing by face time, trying to book at least a weekend with the busy man.
“ Well, what do you think of that ? Instead of a weekend you come to my place and we spend this isolating things together.” He had offered,showing you his best puppy eyes look.
How could you have answered no to that.
Almost two week now after your temporary move in. You never had been so happy to have accepted the invitation. Of course, at first you both had some difficulties, trying to accommodate you in this new domestic arrangement and new pandemic rules. But, after a few days of being woke up as early as a bird in the morning by the sound of Ben waking up. He starts to naturally close the door of the room and leave the store down, letting you sleep for at least a few hours more. For your part, you tried to avoid as much as you can the corridor leading to his office, letting him write in peace or passing his many interviews without outside noise.
After a few adaptations, your cohabitation works as well as a symphonie played by a brillant orchestra.
“ Piouff, one interview done, next one is at four,did you eat already ?” Ben asked you, entering the living room where you were binge watching one of your favorite series on Netflix.
“ Yes, I leave you a plate in the fridge. How did the interview go ?”
“ Oh good thank you i’m starving. It went pretty well, their questions were great. We had some fun “
“ Mind playing a game of Mario Kart after you eat, i’m in the mood to kick your ass “ You joke, enjoying the sound of his laugh.
“ Did you lose like ten times already ? It admirable that you still think you can kick my ass in a game I had mastered”
“ I feel lucky today I guess” You reply amuse “ Go eat, I will set up the Switch “
“ Okay then “
Moments like this were some of your favorites. Simple, sometimes childish, moments when outside life problems seem to vanish, leaving only the two of you laughing or cuddling.
Of course, you also had some rough times, scared of what would happen in the future and how you will get out of this pandemic situation. But, each time, you were here for each other, trying many different ways to make you feel better or chase the scary thought away.
When Space force goes on Netflix, you made an effort, hoping to make him laugh by throwing a parody of a movie premiere. You had prepared every detail, from the popcorn and other snacks( mostly frozen Reeses cup) in a little D.I.Y bucket, to the fake red carpet ( previously the bath mat), to a print page of the Space Force logo tape to the wall, finishing by you in the only pretty( not sundress) dress that you had put in your luggage.
The whole assembly of things put together in the living room was oddly looking like the house birthday party of a five years old kid. But, he totally loved it. You knew that public events like premieres weren't the favorite part of his job. But, after two months of hearing him sigh of how much he loves wearing his casual clothes, but already miss his button up shirt and nice clothes. You couldn't stop smiling when, after discovering the surprise, he had run upstairs, coming down only after putting on one of his suits and a tie matching the tone of your dress.
You also make fun of the whole situation that was his quarantine hair. Once a while, seeing him pushing them out of his face or struggling to arrange them, mostly ending up rocking a baseball cap in the house.You had jokingly asked him if he thinks they had their own life or if he already lost something in the vast forest of his dark lock.
“ I really should cut them off” He once announced one day, at your own despair while his head was resting on your thigh during a movie “ They became a little bit out of control”
“ Cutting your hair ? Did you though at the poor little fairies living in it. They will lose their home” You joke, laughing as you pass your finger in the soft mass.
A smile blooming on his lips,he closes his eyes, clearly enjoying the sensation on your fingers.
“ We could relocate them, keep the hair we had cut and make them a home in that” He laughed.
“ We ? You want me to do it ?! Murder your beautiful hair. Not sure I will be able to do it”
Lifting his upper body on his elbow, he gave you one of his sad looks.
“ Please, they will grow back but right now they drive me crazy.”
“ Fine “ You sigh with a half smile“ prepare the garage I will take a towel and the scissor “
Unexpectedly, you came out proud of the result.
And then, as another month passes and some public places reopen. You found Ben more often in his though, looking at the horizon for no particular reason. At multiple times, you had tried to ask him if it were okay, but each time, he came back to his natural happy state, assuring you that yes, he was going well, he was just thinking at his writing.
Until one night when lost in his thoughts, he looked at you biting his lips, clearly fighting an unusual nervosity.
“ Do you know what I was thinking ?” He suddenly asked you while you were reading at the end of the couch.
“ No “ You reply, lifting your eyes off your book.
“ You could stay here”
“ Isn't that what I have already done for three months now ? “ You ask, confuse.
“ After all this I mean...permanently...moving in…” He finished, putting the controller on the table, facing you.
“ Are you sure ?” You couldn’t resist asking.
“ Yes, I never thought of thinking of it for weeks now. And every time my answer is that we are good together, I'm happy that you're here...I'm happy with you in general…”
Putting your book away, you get closer putting your lips on his, joy busting like bubbles in your chest.
“ You make me happy too..“ You reply after your kiss, smiling.
“ So...it’s a yes ? “ He asked, smiling but unsure .
“Of course it’s a yes, I can wait to move in ! “ You laugh.
“ Well, at the clothes on the floor in the bedroom you already did” He joked laughing when you gently hit him with a pillow. “ Do you think I will let you hit me, wait a minute you will see !”
Laughing, you end that night on the floor, planning your new life together.

Three Women designers and their influence on contemporary typographic design
Paula Scher is one of the most influential graphic designers of recent and has worked for the design firm Pentagram since 1991. Her designs can notably be seen in the Public Theatre logo and its promotional material. Her poster for “Bring in ‘da Noise, Bring in da Funk” was groundbreaking, it helped to shift the perception of the Public Theatre and its shows. She used typographic design to express the feeling of the show by displacing text that fills the entirety of the poster. It strikes the feeling of rhythm within a tap dance and is filled with life, just like New York. This design really put Paula Scher on the map and was such an influential design that Paula herself admits (to her dismay) that everyone began to imitate the design.
When speaking about her work for MoMA, she touches on the difficulty they faced in creating consistent designs for their promotional material. Scher managed to align this to the lack of communication between departments at the company and suggested a structural overhaul for creating more consistency within the brand. The outcome was an adaptable design template that could be used across a variety of marketing materials along with a new Art director at the helm. An innovative and game changing direction for MoMA that really speaks of Scher’s brilliance.

Scher has also worked on larger scales creating environmental graphics for interior and exterior buildings. The aim of these was not only to be a purposeful design for navigation but also to create a sense of a place. This idea reminds me of Otl Aicher’s stick figure designs for the Olympics’72 where the iconic bathroom figures originated in order to create an inclusive signage system for multitudes of languages.
Scher played an integral part in bringing about The New York High Line Logo and its fruition as an attraction. The logo itself was a simple letter ‘H’ derived from a font used in British railroads and was altered to resemble the look of track lines. Scher says the design was easy and she was originally surprised the project became a reality due to its huge fundraising goals.
I recently watched Scher’s episode on Netflix’s Abstract. It was incredibly insightful to listen to her speak about her design process and the importance of the use of language in conveying your message about a design.
"Designing the logo isn't the hard job, it's persuading a million people to use it" (Netflix 2020)
Scher says her most brilliant ideas come to her in the back of NY taxicabs, the process is “allowing my subconscious to take over so I can free associate. You have to be in a state of play to design, if you aren’t in a state of play you can’t make anything.” (Netflix, 2020)
Gail Anderson is a New York based Graphic Designer who was mentored by none other than the iconic Paula Scher. Anderson’s work spans from its beginnings in the late 80’s working at the Boston Globe, to working for Rolling Stone Magazine where she helped define its definitive style during its peak years. A job that offered less money but she felt was an opportunity of a lifetime has reminded her throughout the years to keep on challenging herself even if a job sounds a bit scary or unknown.
“-had I not done that (taken the Rolling Stones job) - I would have been kicking myself because it was this golden moment at the magazine that I got to be part of.” (AEF, 2019)
After 14 years Gail moved on to work with SpotCo. creating iconic promotional posters for very well known Broadway and Theatre productions where the focus was on creating designs that help give an overall sense of a show.
“we are trying to provide an emotional promise - you’re not framing a scene or a moment” (American Theatre Wing, 2013)
Her most current endeavours are with her own design studio, Anderson Newton Design (AND) and as a faculty member at her old stomping ground of the School of Visual Arts. Throughout her years in the design industry she has created a variety of design based books with co-author Steven Heller all about illustration, design and typography and was the first woman of colour to achieve the American National Design Award of Lifetime Achievement from the Smithsonian Design Museum in 2018.With over 30 years of design work under her belt, there is no doubt in saying that Anderson has had a great influence on contemporary typographic design. A self confessed design book hoarder, Gail has been scrapbooking her own magazines from a young age and found her calling through her curiosity of illustration and type design within these publications. Gail preaches the importance to a designer of being aware of the world around them and not just what is in front of them whilst scrolling on a screen. A sentiment we can all certainly learn from.
Jessica Hische is a letterer and occasional type designer based in San Francisco. Her hand lettering has become well recognised and can be seen in a variety of her high profile client work throughout the years from Starbucks, Penguin, Mailchimp and The Washington Post.One of Jessica’s most well known projects was her drop cap series for Penguin Random House. Here her hand lettering mixed with an illustrative look allows her distinctive style to shine. The designs are minimal and yet each letter standing alone subtlety tells a story about the theme of the book.
She has become so well known for her lettering work that Hollywood eventually came calling. Director Wes Anderson commissioned a custom font for his 2012 movie titles of ‘Moonrise Kingdom’ a film focused on 2 kids adventures in a small New England town. Hische created a custom font titled ‘Tilda’ just for this purpose. Derived from the Edwardian Script typeface but a little less formal and with influence from the titles of La Femme Infidele. Hische created an elegant, cursive and almost fairytale looking typeface that had a hand written feel to it. The type itself became a huge part of the identity and branding of the film.
“- if you think about New England in the ’60s… it’s not like most places would be staying on top of the most current trends in type - So, using something from the ’40s made sense to me. If you think about a small, conservative New England town, lord knows all the printers and designers in town are probably still using type from years ago.” (Landekic, 2014)

The Freedom of Expression Ep 18 - Baseball with Mercedes Benz logo used by Chiba Lotte Marines.
K: This is Dir en grey's Kaoru with The Freedom of Expression. This program started...how many years ago was it now? 3 or 4 years ago?...on InterFM, asking questions about freedom of expession...with this theme we talked about current news stories each time. From there, we have moved over to Youtube. There are maybe times when we talk about stuff that isn't really related to expression though..
J: There are.
T: Yeh.
K: I just wanna enjoy talking sometimes.
J: This program has a wide scope.
K: Yeah. Well, today, I mean, on the day of this broadcast, its the opening of the professional baseball season.
J: Oh, June 19th?
K: Yeh. At the point in time of recording this, we don't know exactly what will happen, but..at last baseball is gonna start.
T: And that means...? Kaoru?
K: And that means?
J: And that means?
K: What do you mean?
T: Your beloved Hanshin Tigers!
J: Oh, yeah, his Hanshin Tigers. How will your beloved Hanshin do this year?
K: Oh, they will win by a mile!
J, T: *laugh*
J: *laughing* We shouldn't laugh!
K: Hahaha
J: We really shouldn't laugh! We're so rude!
T: Its because he said straight away, 'by a mile!'.
J: Tell us your rationale for saying that, for saying they'll win by a mile.
K: Well...they're strong.
J: You could say that about anyone! *laughs*
K, T: *laugh*
J: Saying, 'They're that strong'...Yakult fans could say the same.
T: I'd just like to ask again, since when have you been a fan of the Tigers? Since when were you first aware of the Tigers?
K: How old was I?...I think I was probably in the lower grades of elementary school. As far back as I can remember really. My Dad played baseball in a non-professional team. So he had his uniform, and glove, and bat, and stuff in our house. I used to play with him, and he took me to watch games. My first time was at Nishinomiya stadium, I think...the Hankyu Braves. And after that, I wanted to see a game at Koshien.
J: Ehh, really? Oh, so you were going to stadiums from quite a young age?
K: Yeah.
T: How did it feel going Koshien and places back then?
K: It was kinda scary. There was a load of scary looking people there.
T: Scary looking people? *laughs*
K: Like really drunk people, and stuff.
J:Oh, all the hecklers.
K: The staduims didn't look as smart as they do now.
J: Ohh, of course.
K: They were kind of grubby.
J: So about Hanshin doing really well this year, they'll definitely win today's game? Where are they playing today?
T: Today is..
K: Against the Giants, right?
T: Yeah, the Giants.
K: At Tokyo Dome.
T: Their nemesis, the Giants.
J: The legendary fued between the Giants and the Tigers, right?
K: Well, yeah. For the opening match, Tokyo Dome is a bit hard going though.
J: I thought you just said they were gonna win by a mile?!
K: Hahaha.
J: Already thats not the case!
T: He's suprisingly calm about it, right?
K: No, its just that at the moment, Tokyo Dome carries some not so good memories. I've been to watch them there many times.
T: Oh, right.
K: I don't have very good memories of it.
J: Is it bad?'
T: They'll be starting about now, at 18:00, won't they?
K: They will be, yeh.
J: Don't we upload this at 19:00?
K: Yeh, yeh.
T: Ahh. Oh, they'll be just about finishing the third round or so?
K: Ahh.
J: I see.
K: But they'll probably be hitting ???(バコバコ)*1. They might still be on the second round.
J, T, K: Hahaha.
J: Well, its good to think about it in a positive way.
K: Yeh, yeh, yeh.
J: What are the thoughts of our so called sports journalist about Hanshin's chances this year? *gestures to Tasai*
T: Well, as for me, Hanshin are..I was talking to my wife about this before, and despite being a really popular team, in reality, they rarely win.
K: Yes.
J: Oh, is that right?
K: They never win.
T: Yeh, yeh, yeh
K: They're weak, to start with.
J, T: Haha
K: I even imagine them as a weak team.
T: Yeah.
J: I see. So its not like they are famous for being a strong team like the Giants?
K: The Giants are invincible.
J: Well, yeah.
K: Its like they have to be strong.
J: Yeh, yeh.
K: Hanshin are like...even though they're weak, you like them, haha.
J: Hahaha.
T: So people used to say, Dame Tora!/ No good Tigers!' at one point and stuff. But, what is it? The mentality of Osaka people?
K: Well, even if they loose, it doesn't hurt very deeply.
J: Ahh, right. Unlike Giants fans, who would be hurt at even a small loss. Hanshin fans don't have such a weak heart?
K: We don't.
J: Ahh, amazing.
T: Its incredible, thier popularity. They are more popular than the Giants.
K: Yeh
T: The Sports newspapers down there, if they have like 8 or so pages, 4 or 5 pages will be dedicated to Hanshin.
J: Oh, that much?!
T: They even cover the minor team at Naruouhama, with their results and a comment.
K: The minor team is really well recieved, and everyone gets really carried away with it.
J: Hahaha.
T: Yeh, yeh, yeh.
J: Isn't that the reason they never get that strong?
K: Well, in the end, yes.
T: Hahaha. No, but they are talked about, even as the minor team.
J:Ehh
K: And with all these fans, theres kind of a supporters' association, and everyone gets full of themself.
T: Hahaha.
J: Oh, really? Kami is listening silently though. I wonder what he thinks. Don't gods know much about baseball?
Kami: No, no, I've been listening the whole time. But Hanshin are quite strong, aren't they? I mean, they are not the best in Japan, but don't they often win? The league win?
K, T: No..
K: They don't.
T: Once in 1985, and once in 2000, that time with Lotte in the Japan series, and once at the time they changed over from Nomura san to Hoshino san.
K: Yeah, league wins.
T: Its only been about 3 or 4 times hasn't it?
Kami: When you say weak...well, they have gotten stronger recently, but I always think of the BayStars as the weakest.
T: Yeah, Yokohama never win either.
Kami: I didn't think Hanshin were that weak.
K: Well, overall, they are getting better. Like, thier average..the gap is closing.
T: Well, Hiroshima won three times in a row. The Central league is sort of bunched up like that. The Giants are just ahead.
J: Just a bit, right. Ahh, it exciting isnt it? How far will Hanshin get this year?! They'll win?
K: Of course.
J: They will win.
T: Should we make a promise to do something if they win?
K: If they win?
T: If they win...or if they don't win? But, they will definitely win, right?
K: Hmm.. *Everyone laughs*
J: Hang on a second, you started by saying they will win by a mile, and now 'Hmm..'. You're saying 'Hmm..' for 5 minutes.
K: Its because I don't know what will happen.
T: Well, yeah. You don't know whats gonna happen.
K: Well, its cause its an irregular season.
J: Well, of course.,
T: Yeah.
K: Cause its a tight schedule.
J: Oh, because its tight?
K: There are no inter-league games, and no All Star games. Im not sure how the climax will go.
Kami: Lets do something if they win.
J: Oh, yeh, if they win.
Kami: If they win.
K: If Hanshin win?
Kami: Yeh, if we did that, we'd be all looking forward, supporting Hashin.
K: Well, ok, if Hanshin win let's do an event on this program.
J, T: Oh!

K: In that way everyone would be supporting right?
T: Yeah.
J: Shall we do a 'The Freedom of Expression' event?
T: "In celebration of the Hanshin Tigers' win!"
K: Im not sure we need such a crown.
J, T: Hahaha
J: Well, anyhow, we'll do an event.
K:Yeh.
J: I think we've created the motivation for people to support Hanshin with this.
T: Yes, its turned out well.
K: Like a live broadcast or something?
J: Oh, that would be good. Thats a good idea.
K: Well, ok, this isn't what we're supposed to be talking about today.
T: It wasn't supposed to be about Hanshin, was it?
J: Well, as today is the opening of the baseball season, let me share a piece of news concerning professional baseball.
This is the news that Lotte are using a baseball which features the Mercedes Benz logo. Manager Iguchi says, the Marines are at the top too! In the first game of this season at their main stadium, the Zozo Marines Stadium, the ball they use will have Mercedes Benz Japan's (thier sponsor's) logo printed onto it. This comes to fruition as a result of thier manager Iguchi being a big Merecdes Benz fan. Iguchi said to his team on the 8th, 'Since I started playing professional baseball at age 22, up until now over 20 years later, I've always driven a Mercedes Benz. Just as these cars are admired from around the world, I want the Marines to reach the top this season.'
K: Yeah.
T: Its great, isn't it.
J: Eh, Tasai san, have you seen it?
T: I saw it earlier. Its stamped on about the size of a seal.
J: Is it small?
T: Well, its like 'Benz!'
K: I kinda want one.
T: Yeh, its cool, right?
J: So, it doesn't cause any obstacle when grasping the ball?
T: No, it doesn't. Its just the Benz logo.
J: I see. So its not like it catches on your fingers and effects your throw?
T: Well, I wonder..
K: It doesn't! It would be a problem if it did.
J: It would be problematic, right? But conversely, if you pay money, you can have this type of thing engraved on the ball. What do you think, Kaoru? What if you had the Dir en grey logo put on the ball in one of the Hanshin Tigers' official games?
K: Oh, I'd like that.
T: But I get the feeling that people would want to do that a lot with Hanshin.
J: I wonder how much it costs?
T: Probably a million or so yen. I don't think Mercedes Benz will be the cheapest either.
J: Thats right.
K: But if its on the ball, it won't be seen on TV right?
J: No, it won't.
K: So, you wouldn't even know about it, unless it was pointed out. ???*2 Also, if the guy who gets a home run puts it on SNS or something.
T: Ahh, that would be ideal.
J: It would normally be plastered all over the fences of the stadium, wouldn't it?
K: Yeah, in the stadium.
J: But its kinda fresh, to put in on the balls.
T: Yeah, its cool.
K: On the balls?
J, T: *laugh*
K: ???
J: No, no, no. *laughing* ????
T: Joe san! Don't soil baseball like that! Its an untainted sport!
J:???*3
T: Yeah *laughs*, so you are tainting it!
J: No, but I really wanna put a Dir en grey logo, or a Tora no ana logo on one Hanshin's baseballs.
T: That would be good.
K: Noo, its impossible.
J: But didn't you do a collaboration with them before?
K: Oh, well that was just like an announcement, but this is totally a sponsor.
J: Well, yeah..right.
K: Right?..The amount of money..
J: Totally different right.
K: Yeah, its on a totally different scale.
J: Well, but I imagine professional baseball players seem tacky to Mercedes Benz.
K: Like a thugs or something.
J: Why do I think that, I wonder? Although they're all the same athletes, soccer players don't give off the same atmosphere to me.
K: But even soccer players seem like they are a bit artificial. They suddenly start dressing up, wearing brand clothes..
T: Yeah.
K: They get off planes, dressed up all smart and stuff.
J: They do, yeah.
T: But that might be the influence of Kazu (Kazoyoshi Miura) or Takeda san since they got into the J League.
J: For some reason, if you talk about fashion in the pro-baseball world, I always think of Kuwata san, for example. Also, Shinjo san (Tsuyoshi Shinjo). They have that kind of image. There's not that many..
T: Ahh, right.
J: Like I don't know many with a sense of fashion.
Kami: I think the same! Thats it. They have no fashion sense. They are not cool at all!
T: Thats right.
Kami: They are real sports people. Whatever they wear, thier muscles swell, it looks kinda wierd.
T: Yeh, yeh.
K: Well, yeh.
Kami: But when baseball players or even soccer players wear thier uniform, they look super cool!
J: Absolutely.
T: Ah, I see.
Kami: When they get off airplanes, I want them to wear thier uniforms.
J: Always in thier uniforms.
T: That would be good, yeah.
Kami: They would look so cool!
J: I see.
T: Well, they are professionals, baseball is technical job, they are the ultimate professionals. If you can play baseball, that is everything, I imagine. Thats my follow-up.
J,K: *laugh*
K: Well, today, at this time, the game will still be ongoing.
J: Yes, thats right.
K: I'll be praying for an exciting baseball season.
J: And if Hanshin win?!
K: We'll do an event.
T: Pretty good.

Julycanthropy 2021, Day 1: “Fear”
Summary: Part of a series of vignettes, set at a facility where teenage werewolves stay until they learn to control their transformations. In this entry, the two newest arrivals compare notes.
“So,” Dr. Brady sighed as he led Vinh down the hallway, “How are you feeling right now?”
Vinh shrugged. His mind was a mess of nightmares and worries, but his body was too tired to voice his panic anymore. He could feel his knees shaking as he walked. His shoulders were hunched, and he kept adjusting his pants to keep them from slipping.
Dr. Brady nodded, as though he could read all that subtext in Vinh’s shrug. “Well, you and I will have a chance to talk more later. First you need to get checked in. Here we are—”
They reached the director’s outer office, with an empty secretary’s desk and a few chairs by the wall. “Just wait here. Dr. Babineaux will be with you shortly.”
Dr. Brady left, and Vinh eased himself into one of the chairs; he still felt sore and stiff all over. He took a deep breath and closed his eyes, feeling that he could easily drift off to sleep before the director got here. But his mind was still reeling with what had happened the previous night—what he had done, what he had become.
The agony of the transformation. The rage burning inside him, so strong that it annihilated human thought. Running on all fours, hungry and searching. Seeing an animal move, chasing it down, ripping its throat—
Vinh shuddered, closing his eyes tighter and shaking his head.
It was going to happen again, every night, until he could learn to control it. And until then, he would be stuck here, in this—hospital/prison/boarding school for monsters. For how long? What would the other kids—the other werewolves—be like? What if—
The door opened. Vinh looked up, surprised to see Dr. Brady again. Behind him came another boy about Vinh’s age. He had heavy bags under his eyes, but otherwise he looked far more cheerful than Vinh thought anyone in this facility should be.
“Looks like we have another one,” Dr. Brady said wryly. “Chase, this is Vinh. Vinh, this is Chase.”
“Hey,” Chase said, raising his hand. Vinh awkwardly returned the gesture.
Chase took another chair as Dr. Brady left again. Vinh looked away; the last thing that he wanted to do was make small-talk right now. He eyed the newcomer warily. He was a werewolf. Vinh knew that he was a werewolf too, but remembering that hardly made him feel better about the situation.
In contrast, Chase was smiling as he glanced around the room, his leg bouncing with nervous energy. Eventually his gaze settled on Vinh, giving him a closer look. He suddenly started to snicker.
Vinh looked up sharply. “What?!” he snapped.
"Your clothes are like, ten sizes too big for you, man.”
Vinh grimaced. He was skinny, and currently wearing worn-out clothes that were made for a bulky adult. He noticed that Chase’s jeans were also pretty baggy, and his T-shirt had the logo for the MILFORD POLICE DEPARTMENT on it. Neither of them was wearing shoes.
Chase sat back in his chair, grinning. “Let me guess. You also woke up naked in the woods this morning, got caught streaking home, and then dressed out of the lost and found at the police station?”
Vinh felt his face burn. “Not exactly.”
“I was covered in blood,” Chase added, shaking his head. “For a minute I was sure I killed someone, but then I thought back and, nope, just a deer! Ripped it apart with my teeth.” He let his head fall back, staring up at the ceiling. “What about you?”
“I don’t want to talk about it.”
“You didn’t kill somebody, did you?”
“No!” Vinh said, his voice rising shrilly. “Shut up!”
He looked away. Chase remained silent for a moment. Finally he said, “Man, this is fucking terrifying, isn’t it?”
Vinh started. “Huh?”
“This whole thing. It’s scary as shit.” Chase turned back to him. “I mean—last night, I was up late studying for a Math test. That’s what I was worried about. And then I—changed, and like—I just wanted to kill things. It was like...” He finally seemed at a loss for words, groping the air as though hoping to catch some.
Vinh felt a chill. “Like—you weren’t even really yourself anymore?”
“Yeah! Just a—wild animal, like—” He waved a hand through the air. “Chase is gone, the body’s under new management. And it’s gonna happen again tonight, right?"
“Probably.” Vinh looked down at his hands. “Dr. Brady said it'll take months before we can stop ourselves from transforming.”
“And until then, we’re stuck here. All that studying for nothing. I’ve never been more scared in my life."
"Me neither.”
Chase grinned, then surprised Vinh by thumping him on the back.
“Finally, someone who gets it! So come on, spill. How’d the dogcatchers nab you? I was hiding in a bush when they showed up.” Chase snickered. “See, I’d been running through people’s backyards, trying to figure out where I was, when this old lady came out of her house and started screaming. I said I wasn’t gonna hurt her, but I was covered in blood and I don’t think she spoke English, so...”

What I thought about “Young Blood, Old Souls” from The Owl House
Salutations random people of the internet who probably won't read this. I am an Ordinary Schmuck. I write stories and reviews and draw comics and cartoons. Today, I am reviewing the season one finale of The Owl House. And by the way, there are zero dislikes that I have for this episode. Any issues I could have are either petty nitpicks, or just not worth talking about. So, for the first time ever, I'm going to share my thoughts unfiltered. No likes. No dislikes. Just my thoughts on why I think this episode turned out as great as it did. And in case you couldn't guess, there are going to be enormous spoilers for the finale itself, and The Owl House in general. So consider this your last warning as we dive in!
The opening narration: I'm a sucker for fairytale esque opening narrations in stories, and that's the feeling I got when watching this scene. Sure, you could say that it's an exposition dump that tells us stuff we already know, but I don't see it that way. I see it as a technique to set the mood of the episode, while also reminding us how much of a threat the Belos can be.
And again, let's ask ourselves: How much is accurate in this small history lesson, and which parts are made up by Belos? Because who's to say that he isn't the one who wrote the book that King is reading?
No intro: This. Was a shock.
Usually shows shorten the intro to it’s first and last portions, or at the very least, flash the opening logo. Never, to my knowledge, has a series straight-up drop both the intro and the logo. To me, that is a good sign of a great episode. Because no intro tells me that the writers had so much to put in, that they didn't want to waste a single second to even flash a logo.
Not that many jokes: The jokes were another appreciated, albeit well missed, absence within the episode. Because this is the season finale. An event that, depending on what show you make, needs to be taken seriously. And while I say that The Owl House is a comedy show with drama on the side, that doesn't mean it shouldn't focus on the drama if an episode calls for it. And an adventure where Luz has to save her mentor from an emperor who turns people to stone? Yeah. That's an experience where drama has to take center stage for the time being.
Luz is serious and angry: Don't get me wrong. I love Luz for her endless optimism and her ability to find fun in whatever situation she's in. But this is not the type of episode that requires that personality. If anything, I was happier to see Luz act more seriously rather than stick to her quirky personality. Because this proves that Luz isn't some oblivious goofball who can't see the darkness in the world. It shows that she understands when to be serious if the situation calls for it. This also reveals that not only can Luz get angry, but she can get downright vengeful. Her desire to make Lilith pay is not only understandable, but it's absolutely justified. Say what you want about her now, but what Lilith did to Luz in the last episode was awful. So I can't really blame her for getting angry at the mere sight of Lilith.
Now, if Luz were to remain with this angsty personality, then I would be less than ecstatic. But it seems pretty clear to me that angry Luz is a situation-dependent side of her personality that will only come out in the more dramatic episodes. This is evident with the fact that Luz's optimism returns after Eda comes back safe and sound. So while I came to enjoy angry Luz, I'm still going to prefer happy Luz any day.
Owl Beast Eda sticks her tongue out: I love the idea that this was a part of the real Eda shining through, just because the thought of Eda fighting a curse to get under Lilith's skin is just funny to me. And Lilith sticking her tongue out too was just icing on the cake.
Belos’ is still terrifying: That's it. That's all I have to say. We get even more of a glimpse of Belos' power, and it just cements how he's the most terrifying villain that Disney has made in years. Because I saw his fight with Luz (more on that later) as Belos holding back. Which makes me wonder: WHAT THE F**K IS IT GOING TO LOOK LIKE WHEN HE'S ALLOWED TO LET LOOSE?!
And if I'm being honest with you guys, I'm a little scared to find out the answer to that question.
Eda is partially the Owl Beast: This was a cheat, but an effective one. It gives Eda a chance to have actual speaking roles, while also nerfing her, so she doesn't escape. Would it have been more tragic if Eda spent the entire episode as an unintelligent monster? Maybe. But it also means Eda couldn't give Luz the portal (the most important thing in the finale) and not get to say goodbye to Luz (the most gut-wrenching scene in the finale). Say what you want about Eda being partially cursed, but I think it was a smart decision.
We meet Gus’ dad!: This might not seem like a big deal, but I certainly enjoyed it. Hell, I always appreciate it when I get to know more about the lives of characters in my favorite media. And finding out that Gus' dad is a news reporter? That's a nice reveal, even if it's not the most important thing to happen in the show.
Petrification: Sooooo, this is basically the death penalty. Let that sink in for a second. Because the world of this show, that's aimed for children, actually has a death penalty. Sure, the writers don't actually use the d-word. But turning people into stone with no way to turn them back? They might as well be dead at that point. And I actually like that The Owl House is allowed to go this dark. It raises the stakes much higher than any episode once we find out that Eda could die if Luz fails. And that's a thought I'm sure no one appreciates. Especially Luz.
Luz and King stepping on the grass: Hey, there may not be that many jokes in this episode, but that doesn't mean it isn't allowed to be hilarious. And, yeah, this got a huge laugh out of me. Both from how King and Luz look as they commit their "crime," and because of the guard's over-the-top reaction to it. It gets me everytime.
Warden Wrath’s high-pitched scream: Not much to say here other than I just thought it was funny. Because what also gets to me is when a "big scary character" does something pathetic like what Wrath did. And if you didn't hear his scream, go back to play this scene again. It's well worth it.
“Draw me a map!”: I don't know why I love this line so much. Maybe it's because Sarah-Nicole Robles' delivery made me laugh, or because it preemptively shuts up nitpickers who would ask how Luz knew where the detention center is. Either way, this was a great line.
Willow and Gus help...sort of: In the grand scheme of things, Willow and Gus didn't really do that much when helping Luz and Eda. Sure they got a crowd to chant about letting Eda go, but that effort didn't do anything to stop the petrification. Even that brief moment of standing up to the Emperor came to an end the second he showed up. Which means that it's an issue that Willow and Gus didn’t really help Luz, right?
That would true if it wasn't for the fact that Willow and Gus didn't immediately jump at the idea of backing Luz up if she needs them. That makes these two the perfect best friends that Luz could ask for, solely on that loyalty alone. Would it have been better to see them fight alongside Luz? Maybe, but I doubt Luz would actually want her friends risking everything for her vendetta. Besides, I doubt Willow and Gus would really be that much help compared to how quickly Lilith dismissed both of them in the last episode. So while they get a C for contribution and efficiency, they get an A+ for loyalty in my book.
Eda’s goodbye to Luz: Oh, man. And I thought Eda's goodbye in "Agony of a Witch" was painful. This? This actually got me misty-eyed. And I think the reason why it's more heartbreaking this time around is that Eda is fully showing her emotions in this scene. In my "Agony of a Witch" review, I said that Eda was trying to hide how dire the situation from Luz by smiling and playing the thing off as no big deal. She fails because her eyes and her voice cracks give away all of her feelings, but she still tried nonetheless. This time, however, Eda makes it clear how serious the situation is with both her expressions and tone of voice. Probably because the last time she tried to be gentle with Luz, her apprentice threw herself into the lion's den. So as a result, it comes off as more heartbreaking, given the fact that Eda makes it clear how serious their predicament is. And the fact that she not only says a real goodbye to Luz but practically pushes her away?! Add that with the fact that they share "I love you's" to each other, and you got a scene that just tears at the heartstrings.
Luz crying again: NnnnnnnOPE!!!
I already said that the single image of Luz crying was enough to break me. So seeing her just break down and sob her eyes out is more than enough to hurt the soul, man!
IT HURTS DA SOUL!
“Talk to the glyph, WITCH!”: You know for a FACT that if Luz was allowed to swear, she would use a very similar sounding word to describe Lilith. And I love that implication!
Luz can’t do magic in the human realm: Woah boy! It was one thing when we all predicted it. But to now have visual confirmation that Luz cannot, in fact, do magic in the human realm? Let's just say that adds a whole new level of heartbreak for when Luz has to go home. As well as an overflowing amount of angsty fanfics that plays with that idea.
Lilith’s backstory: ...
*DEEP INHALE*
I will hold off Fredrick Ulisinsburg for now. For. NOW. Because while Lilith's actions are nowhere near justified...it is clear that she does regret her actions. Lilith said it herself. She thought the curse would last for at least a day, and in no way intended for it to be permanent. It's still crappy of her to willingly curse Eda at all, but at least she didn't want her sister to live a life of torture. Plus, there's a sense of tragedy given the fact that Eda wasn't going to fight Lilith anyway. Lilith underestimating how much Eda truly cares must have made the guilt set in even more. And I hope that the show explores that in season two. Because while I think Lilith is on the right track towards redemption, what she did was awful, and I want her to actually earn her forgiveness. Not just hand it out because of a few acts of kindness (more on that later).
(Also bonus points for that foreshadowing with the sharing-the-pain spell. I did not think it would come up again in the way that it did.)
Baby Eda: Must. Protect. Baby. Eda.
Amity’s parents(?): It's yet to be officially confirmed (to my knowledge) that those students in the bleachers are Amity's parents. But if they are, then it's awesome that The Owl House crew snuck this reveal in the finale. They didn't need to do that, but the fact that they did just make schmucks like me happy.
Luz briefly looking out into the forest: So much is said about Luz with just these few short seconds. The fact that she hesitates going back to the Isles tells me that she's wondering if she should. Because right now, Luz has an out. She could say goodbye to her problems and run home to mami, especially given the fact that that's what Eda wants her to do. Except Luz would never do that. Because Luz has proven time and time again that she will not back down when it comes to helping the people she loves. Eda, Willow, Amity. These are all characters that Luz would do anything and everything for if it meant they would be safe. But that doesn't mean she won't briefly get tempted to escape. So while this moment of hesitation shows that Luz can have times of selfishness, her almost immediately running back proves that she will always choose the path of selflessness.
Lilith willing to be a double agent: This was the first sign of Lilith working her way towards redemption. Her willingness to still work for the Emperor's Coven, and to change it from the inside, is pretty admirable. It's almost a shame that she gets caught almost immediately. Because I would have loved to have seen Lilith's attempts to work against the Emperor to protect Luz and Eda from getting arrested. Not only for character growth reasons but because it would actually strengthen her redemption by having Lilith willingly risk everything for the right people.
Luz vs Emperor Belos: I could have never expected this. At least, not so soon. I always assumed Luz would fight Belos at some point, most likely in the series finale. Never would I have expected this confrontation to happen in the first season. And man, oh, man, what a fight! I'm sure some people are gonna complain how easy it was for Luz to fight back, but to those people: I have a few things to point out.
First off, Belos' line of, "I'll play," tells me that he's going easy on Luz. Nothing he does really looks like it would hurt Luz too badly-at least by his standard. And to me, it seems like Belos is treating the fight in a similar way a teenager lets a toddler "challenge" them. Because when you compare Luz's frantic movements to Belos' calm and calculated ones, it is clear who's the better fighter in this battle.
Second, Luz doesn't do that much. Sure she chips his mask with an ice spell. But that's the equivalent of how Iron Man's finishing move on Thanos only resulted in "a drop of blood." Every other glyph Luz uses during this fight was to protect herself rather than fighting back. And the fact that she barely got a chance to fight back, when the Emperor was going easy on her? Let's just say that it makes me even more terrified for Luz's safety when round two inevitably happens.
Lastly, Luz is someone who has what I like to call: Percy-Jackson-Syndrome. A character who's a bumbling idiot seventy-five percent of the time, a surprisingly good strategist for fifteen percent, and terrifying when angry in the last ten. And Luz has shown in the past that she has a sense of quick wit and strategy when fighting powerful foes. Her plan to beat Willow's inner-self, as well as Luz's plan of escape from Otabin, are two examples that come to mind that prove this. So it's not too much of a stretch that Luz is still alive after fighting Belos, because the one time she got the upper hand was by outsmarting him.
So again, good fight, and I'm terrified for round two.
Luz destroys the portal: This was a heroic sacrifice I didn't see coming, even though I really should have. If you've been paying attention to the episode titles, you'll notice that the first letter of each title spells out the phrase, "A witch loses a true way." A lot of people have been speculating what this phrase could mean. Even I dipped my toe in theorizing the right answer. It turns out the people who thought Luz would lose a "true way" back home were correct. But I don't think anybody could have thought that it would be Luz who would take away her only way back home. Not only is Luz being the one to destroy the portal tragic, but this sacrifice shows how much Luz cares about Eda. Luz is willing to say goodbye to everything she knows, for who knows how long, just so Eda can be safe. Plus, it's another moment of Luz defeating her enemy by outsmarting him. Which teaches kids that you don't need to fight harder. You just need to fight smarter.
Lilith shares the curse: This is another sign that Lilith is on the right path. While I still wouldn't say that I forgive Lilith, I will say this sacrifice makes me want to at least consider it.
Belos is fixing the portal: You want to know what makes a villain even more terrifying? The fact that every victory our hero has is more of a minor inconvenience towards the villain. Which is what this scene is. Because while Luz definitely won the battle, it looks Belos is planning on winning the war.
Eda looks different in the outro: I like this. You know why? Because it tells me that Eda being half cursed is not going to be fixed any time soon. Case in point: Willow was wearing her Abomination Track uniform during the intro and the credits, so as not to spoil the ending of episode three. For every episode after, Willow remained in her Plant Track uniform, and it looks like that's not going to change. So the fact that the crew is committing to Eda's design change, to the point where they change the credits as well, shows a great attention to detail. That also hints at a dynamic shift that will remain for the foreseeable future.
The finale makes me want more: To me, the best finales are the ones that resolve most stories but still opens up more for the next season. Because every narrative and conflict season one opened up has been closed. Lilith wanting to arrest Eda? Closed. Who cursed Eda? Closed. Amity's redemption? Please. That got closed, like, three episodes ago. And yet, this finale left me with more questions that I can't wait to get answered in season two.
How will the dynamic change now that Lilith is added into the main crew? What's the day of unity? Why does Emperor Belos want the portal to the human world? Who's that hooded figure that Belos sends to spy on the Owl House? How is being half-cursed going to affect Eda and Lilith? Can Eda still turn into the Owl Beast? Is Lilith going to turn into an Owl Beast now? Are we going to have an episode where Luz and King are going to deal with TWO Owl Beasts? And most importantly: WHEN THE HOLY F**K ARE LUZ AND AMITY GOING TO KISS ALREADY?!?! DO I SERIOUSLY HAVE TO WAIT DURING ANOTHER SEASON-which I'm totally fine with-TO SEE THESE TWO IDIOTS GET TOGETHER?!
I doubt I’ll ever know the answer to all of these questions, but it sure makes me more excited to see what happens next.

So, yeah. "Young Blood, Old Souls" is a definite A+ of an episode. It had excellent drama, astonishing character moments, some closure to several stories, and even a few well-timed jokes on occasion. However, I wouldn't go so far as to say that it's the best episode of the season. It's definitely in the top five, for sure, but not the best. I'm more than willing to give that title to "Enchanted Grom Fright" just for the importance of it alone. Hell, I'd say that I enjoyed "Agony of a Witch" a lot more than "Young Blood, Old Souls." But, I'm willing to blame that on the same reason why Avengers: Infinity War is seen as the better movie than Avengers: Endgame. Whereas the first part did a great job at lifting up the stakes and tension, that part two pales in comparison from doing its job of giving closure. But that doesn't change the fact that "Young Blood, Old Souls" is a damn-near perfect episode that both hurts and heals the soul.
(And that’s it! It’s going to be another few months ‘til season two hits, and in turn, months until I’ll have to review episodes again...Unless I want to do something crazy like review the episodes I didn’t talk about. But that’ll never happen!)

Real Ghostbusters: Firehouse. Kenner. 1987
I’m just going to say it: Kenner’s Real Ghostbusters toy line is one of the greatest toy lines’ to ever hit shops. Ever. The End.
I would not be the person I am today without these toys, along with Star Trek from Playmates and Batman. Any Batman.
Let’s cast our minds back to the mid 1980’s! Ghostbusters was everywhere. We’d had the first movie at the tail end of ’84 and then the animated series in ’86. And what does a good cartoon need? A toy line! In fact, the vast majority of cartoon’s in the ‘80’s (and today if we’re being honest) were really just over the top toy adverts and really, Ghostbusters was no different. So toys were needed fast. In steps titan toymaker, Kenner.
Kenner had an incredible track record at the time having created the DC Superpowers line and oh yeah, STAR WARS! So, to say that Kenner in the ’80’s was on a roll would be a huge understatement.
As I said, the Real Ghostbusters toy line from Kenner was massively responsible for shaping my childhood. It was a vast toy line with a massive assortment of figures and vehicles (all of which I will look at in the future), but it only had one proper play set:
The Firehouse
To me, Kenner’s Firehouse is one of THE greatest play sets ever made. When you really look at it, it’s a pretty simple toy. It’s a building. More basic than that, it’s just a big hollow box with two whole levels, 1 balcony level and a pretty cool fireman’s pole (more on that later).
But, to me, that hollowness is one of this play sets greatest assets. As a kid, you filled that space with your imagination. It may sound corny, but it’s absolutely true. To me, the mark of a truly good play set is the ability to use it beyond the brand that it was created for. I cannot tell you of all the different toys that this play set played headquarters to. From the great Transformers/M.A.S.K war that my brother and I would play, to a strange parallel world that my Star Trek away team would discover. Or when He-Man would come over and visit the Ghostbusters just because we could. And they never seemed out of place, because it was a building. But that does not take away from the awesomesness of this piece.
It has the two walls, front and site and then a huge cut away for easy access inside. The vast space inside could easily be taken up by the placement of the Ghostbusters’ car, ECTO-1. Now, I’ve seen this set critized in the past because Kenner didn’t make it long enough to truly house the car, but I don’t agree with that. Sure, if you try to make the car stay inside the building, it’ll either roll out the back or push through the double doors at the front, but I didn’t care as a kid and I sure as hell don’t care now. As a display piece as an adult, I kinda dig the look of Old ECTO bursting through the doors, it looks awesome. The only issue with having the car inside the Firehouse is that it doesn’t leave much room for the figures on that floor. But that’s why you have other levels!
The upper level, which spands the entire thing, thus being a complete floor. It’s bare but has some figure pegs over the large grate in the middle of the floor (more on that in a bit). It also has the fireman’s pole attached at the top. I LOVE THIS THING. To simulate the famous pole from both the movie and the cartoon, Kenner created this system where you attach a figure onto the red platform, two figures work best for balance but it will work with one, then, on the roof, you flick the switch and that activates the pole! The platform, with figure(s) attached, begins to spin down the thread of the pole at great speed before landing at the ground floor. It’s frigging great! Yeah, ok, it is annoying to have to thread the damn thing up again each time, but I really never really cared as a kid and it never got old. Kenner created a pretty good way recreate the pole from the film/cartoon. Sure Playmobil’s version probably makes more sense, but as a kid, this was rad!
The decals that come with the set adds to it. We’ve got a picture of a scary looking old woman on the upper floor (who actually has her own figure and is totally a scary ghost!). We have some book shelves on the middle level, giving us the idea that this is where Egon and Ray would do their research, and on the bottom level, we have decals of various looking industrial type contraptions that no doubt helps the ‘Busters in their never ending battle against the paranormal! I will say, that this set also comes with a full on ECTO Containment unit that you could put the various small ghosts that come with the Ghostbusters figures. I do have it somewhere, but right now, I’m not sure where! It’s rad though.
On the outside, Kenner have done a marvellous job with the sculpt. It looks just like the Firehouse from both the cartoon and the film. Which is a real Firehouse in New York City, by the way. On the side wall, we have more decals of exposed brick, to give us that “rundown” affect. We also have the windows. So yeah, not much going on here, but pffft.
The front as I said really replicates the design of the real building really well. Then we get one of my favourite little pieces, the Ghostbusters sign! This one is actually a replacement that I was lucky enough to find in eBay for a good price. I lost my original years ago and never thought I’d find another, but I did! Wohooo!
This brings us back to the roof.
Like the upper floor, the room has this large grate that lines up perfectly with the one on the upper floor just below it. Everyone who’s ever played with Ghostbusters toys knows what this is for. That’s right. The SLIME!
Slime has always been popular with kids toys and what better toys to use slime with than frigging Ghostbusters! Kenner’s line came with many vats of slime, in many different colours of the life on the toy line. The idea here was to pour the slime through the roof grate, onto the figures waiting on the upper level, that slime would then oooooze down the upper level grate, covering whatever was on the ground floor. I had many of the vats myself and you know what? I hated them!
Seriously, I know that I am in the minority here, but I hated slime as a kid. Still do. Why in the hell would I want to cover my toys in sticky goo that I would then have to wash off later. Or worse, what if I forgot to?! It would dry into this horrible thing and still leave sticky……NO! I’m not having it! This is not something that I’ve come to as I got older, I’ve very much felt this way since I was a kid. I know other collectors are totally cool with it but honestly, keep that crap away from my toys! (picture is Slime from the 2016 Ghostbusters movie toy line)
VERDICT
So, what’s the verdict here?
Honestly, it’s still epic. I’ve owned this thing for well over 30 years and just having it set up on display in my studio, with the toys and car, brings me so much joy every day. I’m not just reminded of all the Ghostbusters fun that I had, but of all the other various toys that my brother and I used it with to play together. So many great memories, all from what is basically a hollowed out box with a Ghostbusters logo on it. Genius.
You can find the Firehouse on eBay pretty easily, but it’s expensive and the price has really gone up a lot recently. I’d imagine it has something to do with Hasbro’s Real Ghostbusters reproduction figures that have recently come out. I have a Winston, he’s awesome and still mint in box!
I’d be surprised if Hasbro do a reproduction of the Firehouse, but if they did, it would be hugely expensive!
