UPDATE 25 JANUARY 2023

Eventually, the whole cultivation world starts pressuring Wei Ying to choose a husband.

Ome thing to keep in mind is that WWX is still 15 or 16 when all of this is happening. All this pressure isn't good for her mental health.

Wei Ying becomes confused because of her feelings towards all the men.

She goes to talk to her papa about her worries and thoughts about all the men who are trying to court her.

WCZ, being the very protective A-Die that he is, reassures her that she does not have to choose a husband or get married at all. If she wishes to not marry at all, she has the right to do so. She doesn't have to choose any of her suitors.

CSSR comes into the room having over heard the father-daughter convo.

She is accompanied by BSSR and XXC (who are still there btw, they haven't left yet).

CSSR agrees with her husband’s statement and reassures WWX that she does not need to worry as her A-Niang and A-Die will always be there to support her.

BSSR suggests that Wei fam take a vacation on her mountain for a while so they can all chill.

Wei fam agree and go to pack their nags as BSSR declared that they'll be leaving tomorrow.

The Jiangs are the 1st to know about it and aren't very pleased but help them pack anyway.

JC is helping WWX, JFM with WCZ, YZY with CSSR, and JYL entertains BSSR and XXC.

JC questions WWX about her impromptu trip, asking her if she's avoiding him.

She responds that she isn't avoiding him and explains why she's going away for a short while, needing to go clear her mind.

JC is understanding of the situation and gives a kiss on the forehead while telling her to not cause too much trouble.

This moment is very intense and intimate, radiating the pair's romantic and sexual tension.

WWX responds that she can make no promises on that regard but that she'll try to be a good girl for him.

JC grabs into a tight hug with his face buried into her neck and her arms wrapped around his broad shoulders.

JC tells her that if she behaves, he'll reward her when she comes back.

He then places a kiss on her neck and leaves the room.

Wei Ying stays there, standing confused with her face as red as her ribbon.

Are you planning on reading the original Mo Dao Zu Shi novel? Forgive me if you have; I've seen you reference The Untamed solely so I wasn't sure.

I’m about two thirds of the way through it! I’m also reading the comic (the pinyin is escaping me) and watching the donghua, because I am someone who lives to consume the exact same narrative in as many different ways as possible. Also, I grew up on comics (and animated shows and movies, see previous) and have a correspondingly low respect for the concept of “separate canons,” so I’m writing a fic series that’s going to just be My Favorite Aspects Of Various Canons In A Blender, ft:

Sixteen years between WWX’s death and resurrection, because, A, more time = more angst and, B, I think I like the narrative better if the kids are older

Mostly the Untamed version of the romance, because I love pining very much (and I physically can’t bring myself to sacrifice the ‘soulmate’ conversation on Phoenix Mountain, not even for kissing)

The Siege of the Burial Mounds, because mmmmhmmmm hell yes, love that (and the bodies of the Wens in the blood pool)

A much heavier hand with the demonic cultivation/necromancy in the Sunshot Campaign than in the Untamed, much closer to the novel, because demonic cultivation WWX sexy

One incident of Wen Ning being under outside control (Qiongqi Way, as in Untamed) and one incident of WWX legitimately losing control completely (Nightless City, as in the novel), because angst reasons

LWJ defending WWX from the elders as in the novel and also finding A-Yuan as in the novel, both because I Gotta and also because it makes more sense than the show narrative

WWX’s death as in the novel, because while I do love that shot on the cliff to absolute delirium, I really really like that last bullet point and also that post about how I Will Not Be Moved on the idea of the first corpse out of the blood pool being WWX’s original body

More Wen Qing, Wen Ning, Yi City gang, and Jiang Yanli throughout, as in the Untamed, because those are like…my faves, and also I just straight up think the narrative works better/hits harder emotionally if they’re more present earlier on

Ironically the only thing I haven’t elaborately hammered out is whether WWX gets Mo Xuanyu’s body or his original body, post-resurrection, and it’s because I’m too torn between the possibilities for angst.

Anyway, TL;DR, yeah I’m reading the novel and also everything else I can get my grubby little paws on, and if you wanna read like 20K and climbing of just screaming about how much I love Lan Sizhui and also other characters, I got a link for you.

XXC *holding a bowl of foul medicine*: 傻小子，都病成这样了我能不来吗。是不是江晚吟那个不争气的小皇帝又气你了。夷陵那边好的很，有阿菁呢，乱不了。（Silly boy, how could I not come when you're so ill? Was it that useless little emperor Jiang Wanyin giving you grief again? All is well in Yiling. A-Qing is there, nothing will dare cause trouble.)

10. Chenqing as eunuch-in-chief scares everyone

Raven hair and coal-black eyes, Chen-gongong is the most beautiful man in the entire palace - well, he would be, if that pale bloodless frozen face of his would stop being so deathlike. Chenqing is slim and tall and speaks in a hushed tenor tone that strikes the fear of the reaper into the heart of men and women alike.

Nobody knows when or how Chenqing became an eunuch, only that Lord Protector Wei Wuxian brought Chenqing in when he became Regent. Some say Chenqing was already an eunuch before, some say he willingly became one to continue serving Wei Wuxian within the palace.

Truth is: Chenqing was an orphan that Cangse took in when she was the master of Yiling. WWX grows up with Chenqing and knows Chenqing has suffered mutilations at the hands of human traffickers. It's not clear if Cangse taught Chenqing some forbidden pugilist knowledge.

Chenqing knows everything about everyone in the palace. That's why his sleeves are so wide, they're full of secrets.

Chenqing is no less deadly than Suibian when it comes to the art of killing, even though General Sui is the Commander of the Imperial Guards.

No eunuch, handmaid or guard dare whisper what they all suspect - Chen-gongong and Sui-tongling are lovers.

WWX is too busy to care that his right and left hand men are boning.

11. Lan Xichen is the Deputy Imperial Tutor, meaning he is in charge of Jiang Cheng's education growing up.

Recall JC is 8 years WWX's junior and 10 years JYL's junior. LXC is 5 years WWX's senior which makes him 13 years older than JC. When JC became emperor at age 12, LXC was already 25.

LXC's life is incredibly difficult. JFM handpicked him to teach young JC before he died.

It's hard to be the teacher of a boy who's technically in charge of you and the rest of the nation.

Imagine the parent-teacher interview nights with Regent!WWX and Imperial Tutor!LXC

JC's half-brothers (JFM had concubines): Huangxiong called me a bitch JC: *unrepentant* Motherfucker doesn't start with a B. WWX: ............ LXC: .............

12. Imperial Guard!He Ning (Wen Ning) is tall and quiet and an excellent fighter. His little brother (sister) He Qing (Wen Qing) is smol and angy, can't fight but will stab you with a needle if necessary

WWX: I think...you rather despise His Majesty

WN: I dare not, Lord Regent. But chen only has one little sister. She's my world. His Majesty can have any woman in the world, so why can't he spare He Qing? She would be much happier and freer without him.

WWX: .....Fine, fine, I'll find him an empress. The Dowager has been making noise for months now. I'll find him an empress.

Meanwhile

15 yro crossdressing!WQ who is very confused why a royal prince keeps bothering her at work. She's never met the young emperor in any official capacity.

JC lies about his identity and passes himself off as another one of his royal brothers.

WQ grinding herbs diligently while JC sits and stares at her with a blush.

JC thinks 'I might be gay' bc he doesn't know WQ is a girl.

13. After Qin Su and Meng Yao's secret comes to light, to preserve the dignity of the royal family, Empress Qin Su "volunteered" to leave the palace and spend the rest of her days praying for the soul of her deceased son and for the nation at an esteemed Buddhist temple.

Her son, who died several hours after birth from congenital defects, was recorded as JC's first son, and first prince.

Dowager Empress Yu Ziyuan ordered Meng Yao be killed. Meng Yao was privately executed...except he wasn't. Wei Wuxian arranged for him to be brought to Yiling. He's living a good life now. Lan Xichen writes to him.

14. Wen Ruohan is very pleased with the son Jiang Yanli gave him.

After Jiang Fengmian married Jiang Yanli off to tribal warlord!Wen Ruohan, she made the best of her circumstances.

Though WRH has other concubines/slave girls, JYL is the only legal wife, in place of his first legal wife who died many years ago.

WRH is twenty five years JYL's senior, and already has two sons by his first wife. WC is the same age as JYL while WX is two years older. While WRH is alive, WX and WC have no choice but to respect their stepmother, bc their father absolutely does not tolerate insubordination.

WY is born within a year of the marriage and soon becomes WRH's favourite child.

WRH launches a campaign against country when JC is 21 years old and has only been officially emperor for about a year (WWX ended his regency when JC turned 20).

The war starts off bloody - JC doesn't sleep for days. WWX and LWJ are unreachable since they've gone off on an early retirement trip through the mountains. Somehow JC holds his own for months. Things take a turn for the better.

WY is 15 years old and leading a division by himself for the first time. WRH is very proud of him. WY is very talented, but WC and WX sabotage him and get him captured by JC's armies and stealing WY's victory for themselves.

WWX and LWJ are on their way back to the capital when they encounter the squadron that captured WY. WY: Kill me. I will not be your hostage against my father. WWX: Xiao-wangzi - little prince - you know the common tongue? WY: My a-niang was from the empire. WWX: ... a-niang? *sudden realization*

Half the court wants to use WY as a bargaining chip to negotiate a ceasefire against WRH and the other half wants to execute the little foreign prince to show WRH who's boss.

Suddenly, just as the Jiang empire seems to be turning tides, WRH dies. Stroke -rumour has it.

Now that there's no longer any reason to appease WRH, the court wants WY dead, regardless of who his mother is. Politics is brutal that way.

Out of XY, SL, XXC, who gives the best hugs? Also, the XY from your Road trip has such wonderful characterisation. I feel like he wants love but doesn't want to be truly known or is frightened of being known. I also love your SL. He is a babe. I reread the Roadtrip each time you post a new chapter. It makes my heart hurt in good ways <3

For hugs: a tie between XXC and XY. XXC gives awesome hugs - he has the advantage of sheer wingspan with those sleeves of his, he can absolutely envelop you, and his hugs are so fond and sweet and caring and warm you just want to nest in there forever.

XY could give him a run for his money - when he likes you and is in a good mood, his hugs are amazing! There’s so much sheer enthusiasm there - a bit too much force, your ribs will creak - and probably laughter. He does nothing by half! ... Except in the very literal sense, post-Yi City, where he only has 50% the arms to hug you with. Still good! Just not as near-death-experience of being crushed in the name of hugging.

(SL doesn’t like hugs, and would prefer to be left out of the competition altogether.)

So that would leave XXC the winner. Both the other two would be fine with this, however, as long as they got to enjoy said hugs.

And thank you so much! I’m delighted you like how they’re written in Roadtrip! XY very much wants love, but is also very well aware that he’s fucked up a ton and that he’ll have to work for it - he’s just very, very bad at guessing what it is XXC actually wants from him. But he’s trying. He’s really, really trying. ♥

SL is also trying. Or at least his patience is tried. Constantly. It’s not easy, but he’s doing his best.

Thank you @mika--82 for the question! I’m sorry it took so long but since I really enjoyed plotting out my Cangse Sanren lives au, and I think a lot about the women in The Untamed who didn't get to see their children grow up, strap in for round two of TB Revives the Mothers of the Untamed. This week's episode: Save Mama Lan by killing Lan Qiren \^.^/

(Warning for an unsuccessful suicide attempt)

QBT has been isolated in the Jingshi for a decade. She only sees her sons once a month, she isn’t allowed her sword, and her spiritual power is kept sealed

But LWJ inherited his stubbornness from his mum and she's determined to escape, one way or another

LQR is walking by the Jingshi when he feels a massive surge of energy and breaks his first ever Discipline (no running in Cloud Recesses)

He wrenches the Jingshi door open and sees an array that wouldn't look out of place two decades in the future in an alternate universe in a dingy shed behind Mo Manor

LQR breaks his second Discipline in as many minutes (do not make excessive noise) when he screams for his brother before he grabs QBT and drags her out of the array

LQR didn't have time to think, let alone study what the effects of that might be, all he knew was that it was killing her, and that her death would kill the brother he loves more than anything else

The backlash strikes him and he keels over

QBT gathers him up, sobbing and asking why he did it, she wanted to die, why did you do it Lan-er-gongzi? what were you thinking? Your brother loves you

LQR meets his brother’s eyes as he appears over her shoulder, the terrified disciples flanking him a white blur

He smiles and says I know

Curtains on LQR

(alternatively, we can just kill JGS again because ngl that was real satisfying the first time around)

Now the Elders are in a pickle because this may have been an accident but QBT has now been responsible for the deaths of an Elder and Second Young Master Lan

It's decided that the only option is exile

QBT is forbidden from setting foot in Cloud Recesses and the territories of Gusu Lan for ten year and forbidden from speaking to any Lan disciple during that time

She bows, accepts back the plain sword she had yielded when she came through the gates to be married, and is gone before the dawn. LCR watches her leave and then goes to wake their sons

Now, QBT was a wandering cultivator long before she was Lan-furen and actually really enjoys returning to life on the road

I wandered once! I can do it again!

Five years later she meets XXC battling a ferocious demon snake and together they defeat it

QBT definitely doesn’t feel her heart beat a little faster at the youthful face, white robes, and elegant jade-and-silver sword

She answers XXC's graceful bow with one of her own and the two spend a week clearing out the fierce nests of demons on the mountain

The next time their wandering brings them together she is introduced to my good friend Song Lan and hides her smile in her sleeve

Meanwhile in Cloud Recesses without LQR to pick up the slack LCR is forced to step out of seclusion and actually run his sect and parent his children

He does a very good job

QBT has to fight back proud tears every time she hears Twin Jades of Lan spoken of with awe

Ten years to the day of her exile QBT is grinning as she climbs the long flights of stairs towards the gates of Cloud Recesses

Part of that might be the entertaining company she walks with

A young man clutching two bottles of Emperor's Smile and talking so fast she’s only half listening while she tries to figure out if he’s actually taken a breath since introducing himself

Talking at breakneck speed of the young master who had been so strict with him at the gates, aiya Auntie! He was so cold! you should have seen his stony face

QBT only grins harder as WWX climbs the wall, is challenged, and blades flash over tiles (it might bring back fond memories of her own youth)

She slips over the wall while they are distracted and once WWX is silenced she reaches out her hand

You handle your sword beautifully, may I?

LWJ can't even say why - it's too dark to see her face and the voice is roughened after 10 years on the road - but he hands Bichen over without a second thought

She sighs as she runs a finger over the blade and the steel glows, lighting up her face (solely because I think glowy Bichen is very sexy and we should have had more of it in the drama honestly)

Bichen suits you better than it ever suited me, ZhanZhan

LWJ is emoting all over the place (so embarrassing)

(luckily his back is to WWX because if baby disaster bi WWX saw that smile he would've died on the spot)

WWX of course is still a troublemaking rule breaker and LWJ is still charged with overseeing his punishment

QBT and LXC are united in their LWJ should make friends agenda and LXC inherited his sense of humour and delight for teasing LWJ from QBT

Between the two of them LWJ soon has more friends than he knows what to do with

QBT and LXC co-captain the good ship Wangxian

Of course plot stuff still happens including accidental-marriage-before-a-Quest-Ghost

XXC and SL meet them in Yueyang and when LWJ introduces himself they're thrilled because hey we know your mum! she’s real cool!

They don't trust the clans and they might've heard of NMJ but they know Qui-jiejie and they trust her and so they decide XY will go to Cloud Recesses for judgement

N-wow the twin jades are really deserving of their reputations-HS insists on a Qinghe representative going too

oh me? no no Wei-xiong this has been quite enough adventure for me. Meng Yao you'll go won't you? Dage trusts you and Lan-gongzi admired your *delicate cough* capability *innocent smile*

QBT is delighted to see XXC and SL again and happily introduces them to her elder son

SL and LXC almost immediately get into a heated debate over ahistorical fantasy chinese philosophy and/or politics and are instantly bonded

QBT may or may not have instigated said debate with a well-timed quote from a well-known (re: divisive) text

Basically QBT shares my get LXC more friends agenda

SL is, again, the first person (apart from LXC and his parents) to laugh at LWJ's jokes

WWX still refuses to believe this actually happened (the joke and SL laughing) (XXC swears it’s true)

XY is locked in the back hills and eventually a) dies trying to use his hidden piece of the yin iron to break the seals OR b) is rehabilitated by the power of bunnies and become an outer disciple (reader's choice!)

XXC and SL accompany WWX and JC part of the way to Lotus Pier

Cloud Recesses is attacked, QBT and LCR send LXC and MY away with the sacred texts, MY promising he knows somewhere safe to hide

LWJ refuses to leave his parents. The losses are not as bad as in canon, the Wen are beaten back, but LCR and LWJ are both injured

WWX wakes post-rescue with LWJ still there

(Because his parents are holding Cloud Recesses and he knows LXC is safe so he doesn't need to rush off)

(this is hilarious and JC says "fuck" not less than 219 times)

(WWX only almost punches JZX and it only happens twice honestly people should be grateful! he was so restrained!!)

They all return home, LWJ promising to bring reinforcements from Cloud Recesses to Lotus Pier (because it's the most obvious next target. no other reason. just. strategically it makes sense)

WQ sends WN to Lotus Pier to warn WWX when WZL's forces are on their way

When the Wen attack, they're met with a prepared force of 1) YZY and the Jiang Disciples 2) QBT, LWJ, and a contingent of Lan Disciples AND 3) JC and WWX and a gaggle of archers (seriously why tf show the Jiang being so good and then only give us two archery fight scene moments and it’s heart breaking sixth young master jiang dying and some rando ouyang disciple shooting WWX?)

Things get a little hairy but between YZY and QBT they defeat WZL and the rest of the Wen quickly surrender

JFM and JYL arrive just as the battle is ending, escorted by Madam Jin, JZX, LQY, and all the Jin Disciples who were at Cloud Recesses

(WWX: MianMian you came you must have been so worried about me! LQY, ignoring him: Lan-er-gongzi are you okay? WWX: ah Lan Zhan you MianMian really likes you! that’s lucky! LWJ, screaming internally: mn)

(JGS was furious when JZX announced he was joining the campaign but what could he possibly say in front of his battle ready wife without looking like the utter coward of a wet biscuit he is)

Once again WWX is left with a screaming sword, too much curiosity, and too much time on his hands (due to his adopted family being not-dead)

But worse he has now also access to a woman who created an array powerful enough to kill even with her spiritual power sealed

Poor WRH doesn't stand a chance, even without MY spying for the Sunshot Campaign

After the battle QBT&LCR and YZY&JFM shut JGS's bullshit power grab down real quick and JGS sulks like the baby he is (probably in a brothel) while Madam Jin and JZX take over Lanling Jin

JZX hears about MY and the way he helped LXC and NMJ sends a letter of support and JZX is already quite jealous of all these sibling bonds and welcomes Ziyao with open arms

(All of which goes slightly to waste when JZY marries out to the Lan clan slightly less than a year later but hey, at least it's a good alliance.)

WQ takes over the Wen Clan but tears down Nightless City and relocates the capital to Dafan

(WQ: have you been to Nightless City? It’s built on an active volcano. Do you know how bad sulfur ash is for open wounds? Do you know what medical herbs grow in lava slurry? None is the answer. My family are all fucking morons)

(WQ: Not you a-Ning you’re a delight and we’re thrilled you’re here)

Rumour has it a certain immortal was so impressed with the stories of the medical techniques of Dafan Wen that she paid WQ a visit

(Disciples are so reckless after all! One never knows when one might need to be capable of transplanting vital organs!)

Each year WWX and LWJ spend 3 months at Gusu, 3 months at Lotus Pier, and 6 months wandering with XXC and SL

They get "fake married" no less than four times in three years (for the investigation xiongzhang! absolutely no other reason shishu! no other reason at all!) before LXC, MY, XXC, and SL get fed up and barricade them in their room until they talk to each other dammit

(LXC is very grateful MY has gotten so handy with the silencing talismans because the 'conversation' gets uncomfortably loud real quick)

Side note to say Clarity works very well to avert a qi deviation when it's not being actively corrupted, thanks very much, and NMJ lives many, many, many years which would be entirely happy if only NHS would pick up his saber once in a while

He would tell NHS this if he could ever find him

Which Sect Would I Choose?

Hmmm, that’s an interesting question! I quess motto-wise it’s the Jiang sect, ‘attempt the impossible’ sounds pretty sweet and I like that they are so down to earth and free, in a way.

The strong hierachry and etiquette within the Jin sect would probably frustrate me to no end and while the Lan sect has a good motto ‘be righteous’, their endless amount of rules is just... oooph. I would probably go crazy and leave the sect at some point (or I would have stayed a quiet wallflower, had I been born into it, but I like who I am now, so... sry for disappointing you, Lan Qiren)

The Nie sect wants honour, but probably not my kind of honour, so that could be problematic. Also they have that dark problem looming over them.

I like the idea of the Wen sect ‘compete with the sun for radiance, match the sun in longetivity’, so with the right leader, it could be quite cool, it’s all up to interpretation

So yeah, I guess the Jiang sect it is - or I’d attempt what XXC and SL wanted to do. I’m a big fan of that. - what about you? <3

CQL Character Songs

Omgggg I did! And I love all? But the character songs I listened to the most are (lemme quickly check Spotify):

Qu Jin Chen Qing (That melody! Xiao Zhan! These lyrics! ahhh)

Huang Cheng Du (It makes me so sad)

Duo Hen Sheng (I just love the changes in pace and the lyrics)

I love them all, tho. All of them give me feels, all of them remind me of what a great time I had watching CQL, though Zui Shi Shao Nian Bu Ke Qi always amuses me a bit. These sweet youngsters.

Best Fashion

Danggg! I can’t do a rangking, cause I suck at that, but LXC had amazing outfits, esp that dark blue one I drew a while back. Oh and JC!! Man, he dresses up so fashionably! I also adore WWX’s choice of clothes, he got great taste in fashion and I totally get that he doesn’t usually wear long sleeves cause they - are - in - the - way - all - the - time (yet long sleeves are extremely elegant and beautiful). I also loved XXC’s choice, I myself like wearing white and light grey or black for contrast, such a simple yet ethereal aesthetic. Oh and how could I forget my boys XY and JGY! As you can see the more I think about it the harder it gets for me hahaha Now I wanna name them all. Insert everyone, please hahaha

When it comes to my personal taste I’d probably either go for XXC’s clothes or WWX, or both, depending on my plans for the day, you know? haha

Overall I ADORE THE COSTUMES for CQL, big fat kudos to the costume department. From an artist’s perspective there is so much I want to draw bcs of the sheer beauty of it all and how well it fits the characters.

What about you? I suspect you’ll choose JC, because if he is ur fav how could u not haha HE LOOKS SO DAMN GOOD IN HIS OUTFITS

Sorry for the long break, my week was a little intense, but I’m back from night hunting for now and I’m healing up nicely hahaha
