“imma nick ya’ name and keep you right here”
↦ captain buggy’s nicknames for his s/o
↦ don’t mind me just needed to get my thoughts out ☺️
↦ ‘x reader’ format; i’m 20 episodes into the anime after bingeing the live action, so likely ooc! ib @usopps-devotee
Tumblr media
LIVE ACTION! flirty, with exaggerated confidence and a slightly mocking tone. knows what he likes and wants to know what you like. pays careful attention to how you react with each new endearment. did you squirm? fluster? brush it off? loves to catch you off guard by adding ‘my’ to a new moniker, no matter whether you stutter or raise an unamused brow. all bark, no bite – often opting for dirtier, degrading names that aren’t necessarily reflective of his role in the bedroom. never with intent to hurt you, just thrilled to earn your attention. he wants – no – needs anyone and everyone listening to know you’re his.
casually, followed by a wink and smug grin: sweets, sweet/pretty thing, toots, gorgeous, doll, babydoll/babyboy
sarcastically, accompanied by a (playful) sneer: darling dearest, honey, baby, sexy, little circus freak, freakshow
affectionately, often in private with ‘my’ attached: dear, love, showstopper
ANIME! hesitant, wants to show you off to the world but worried he’ll drive you away. thus, tends to stay away from anything with strong sexual undertones. finds it hard to slip them into casual conversation. more often than not, he’s straining as he squawks the endearment while parroting orders at his crew. puffs his chest but avoids eye contact when he tries a new label, eyes glancing about before sneaking a peak at you as soon as your attention falls elsewhere. if he can’t say it directly to your face, he’ll loudly bring it up in his conversations with others, opting to add ‘our’ instead of ‘my’ to hide his embarrassment.
awkwardly, with false bravado as he tries to laugh it off: showrunner, jester, star, main attraction, spotlight stealer, our favorite (magician/acrobat/silkster/etc)
softly, whispered into your skin as he hides his blush: darling, my love, spectacle, treasure, mine

Sonic World project plan: Amy Rose (volume 1)
Tumblr media
The following post is about my idea for a series focusing on Amy Rose. It is subject to being scrapped or cancelled. The series might not even get made.
Synopsis
Set sometime after the events of "Sonic the Hedgehog" volume one, "Amy Rose" follows the titular character on a rescue mission into the Pinball Carnival Zone to save hostages of a robotic showman called Comitron. She'll have to fight through games and performers to get to the Big Top and rescue the scared people.
Characters
Amy Rose - A hero and leader of the Restoration. She is known to have devastating attacks with her mallet. She is the main target of Comitron, who wants her for his show. All she cares about is freeing the people and animals held hostage at the Pinball Carnival.
Topaz the Jackal - A no-nonsense anthropomorphic jackal operative of the Restoration. She follows Amy into the Pinball Carnival Zone. Her weapon is a stun blaster. She is based on Topaz from the series Sonic X.
Molly the Falcon - A pilot who flies a rescue craft for the Restoration. She is usually teamed up with Search. She is inspired by Molly from the series Sonic X.
Felicia the Calico - An assistant to Amy Rose and her biggest fan. She is incredibly helpful.
Search the Goodnik - A reprogrammed Badnik that Tails gave to the Restoration for rescue missions. It is teamed up with Molly. It is a character created by @SasSharo on Twitter.
Comitron - The main antagonist of the story. He is a unique Badnik released into the world by Doctor Starline and Howler. He loves to entertain, but hypnotizes his victims for his acts. His love of games and performance led him to transform a carnival into the large Pinball Carnival Zone. He targets Amy Rose to be in his shows. He is inspired by The Joker (DC Comics), Ringmaster (Marvel), The Toymaker (Doctor Who), Freakshow (Danny Phantom), Zombozo (Ben 10) and Caine (The Amazing Digital Circus).
Other Information
Comitron is my favorite OC that I've created for Sonic.
This story was inspired by the Amazing Digital Circus with elements from the episode "Last Laugh" from the original Ben 10 series and the episode "Something Zombozo This Way Comes" from Ben 10: Omniverse.

Least favorite Danny Phantom episodes from seasons 1 and 2?
Season 1:
"Splitting Images": Idk, the whole Poindexter plot and how the message gets handled is pretty weird. I understand Danny not trying to use his powers to not get attention but it doesn't make sense why he can't used them to defend himself a bit. Sad because i do like Sidney Poindexter.
"Teacher of the Year": I wouldn't say i dislike this episode? It's that i find it weird how Danny and Tucker are being rather sexist just because. I think it does makes sense to Tuck a bit but not Danny. The series had this habit of trying to explore gender in a way that was super strange.
"A Million Dollar Ghost": I wouldn't say "my least favourite" but like, this episode has some ass plot holes that don't make sense. Where is Valerie in this episode first of all? Why Vlad as Plasmius revealing to Jack that he has a ghost portal is never brought up again? Why instead of this we couldn't have an episode of Danny bonding with Jack and Vlad trying to interrumpt them? For an episode Vlad faces Jack feels weak.
Season 2:
"Memory Blank": What is this episode even about. How does this fit with the timeline. What is even the purpose of this episode aside from adding Danny a logo i have zero idea.
"Beauty Marked": The way this episode is written is... interesting. I like the idea of Sam being allowed to be herself. However, it isn't bad for girls to like cloths and alike? After all it is something that isn't rare for girls to like at that age. It doesn't make them stupid nor dumb. I think i could write an episode analysis about this one because it is just bizarre.
"Masters of All Time": The fuck is this episode. It is interesting the what if that is trying to make. The problem is that Vlad human! Contradicts the characterization Vlad has as character in general. The point is that Vlad turned evil after the ghost portal accident, he was a regular dude before the accident. Also why Jack's ghost form looks like Plasmius. How does make sense. The way the lesson is delivered is kinda mixed because Danny was just asking for his parents to not embarass him in front of his peers. It isn't much to ask.
"Double Cross My Heart": It's uh... i'm not a fan of Danny stalking Sam nor the "if someone likes Sam, it is because that person is lying" thing. It is like Danny is the only one who can like Sam, based on the impression i get.
"Reality Trip": While it can be entertaining, the whole thing is messy. I have commented about this episode before. I think the most frustrating part is the time reset of Jack and Maddie knowing Danny's ghost identity. It is going back to the status quo for the sake of going back to the status quo. It doesn't leave important consequences like Reign Storm and The Ultimate Enemy do. Another thing that bothers me is that it is one of the few times the GIW are actual enemies and it is mixed with this Freakshow gem plot. It could have been only about the GIW and it would have worked better.
From Season 1, the closest episode i come to dislike is "Splitting Images". Like Season 1 is overall pretty solid?
In contrast Season 2 is more messy. It has some episodes that have weird time resets or i just don't know how to add then in the timeline. Writing decisions that i don't get. Why Kindred Spirits couldn't be a two part special instead of one dedicated to a one-off enemy? Things like that that could have easily been avoided.

Time for another one of those tag games, thanks to being tagged by @bibliomatsuri. So here's my response “to list 10 of my favorite characters from 10 different fandoms,“ so here I go:
Sanders Sides - Remus Sanders (I love all the dorks but this man has stuck me with THE most pervasive brain rot. As y'all could probably tell. Even though I relate most to Logan/Virgil/Janus... he's just that infectious of a brain goblin, pffft.)
The Umbrella Academy - Klaus Hargreeves. I love that he exudes a similar chaotic energy to Remus. (They're all pretty delightfully dysfunctional people though.)
Encanto - Bruno Madrigal. Another Remus Energy Pick. (Though I relate to Luisa more...)
Final Fantasy (FF6) - Kefka Palazzo. Idec if he's a blatant a Joker Expy. "Dancing Mad" is S-Tier Final Boss Music.
Danny Phantom - There was a hot minute where it was Freakshow (clowns, man)... but now I think it's a toss up between Dark Danny, Clockwork, and Danny. Probably Dark Danny, because TUE was terrifying and the BEST episode, imo. (Though I've kind of related to Jazz and Sam a decent amount.)
Marvel Comics - Spider-man. (It really is a split between Peter and Miles, for me tbh. Also love the Marvel Zombies run so much. And I know Danny was a bit of a Spidey Expy.)
Gravity Falls - Stan Pines or Bill Cipher. For wildly different reasons. :,D (Soos and others were great too.)
Soul Eater - Crona Makenshi. (But Dr. Stein is a runner-up, love mad scientists types.)
Breaking Bad - Skyler or Jesse, probably? (But there's a lot to pick from for interesting characters here. Walt gets to be DELIGHTFULLY punchable as things go along there.)
The Spoony Experiment - Dr. Insano. Mad. Scientist. (In full acknowledgement of how CA/TGWTG/TSE/etc. turned out, it was my first actual active fandom involvement.)
And I'm gonna tag (an arbitrary number of people) @milktea531 @r0sethrills @falconwhitaker @aliensnipe @chromorbid @electropath @moonlightsmasquerade
(Of course, the usual, preemptive apologies to anyone here who doesn't want to be tagged in these things. And even if you haven't been tagged, you can obv do this if you want to, ig.)

Fic authors self rec! When you get this, reply with your favorite five fics that you've written, then pass on to at least five other writers. Let’s spread the self-love ❤
Thanks for the tag, @missrosegold! I’m limiting myself to my recent BNHA fics because I’ve never revealed my previous fandom name on here (I’ve shared it privately with some people though). I’m not hiding it, I’m just not keen on the idea of my older fanfiction being connected to my newer (mostly smutty) fanfiction or my original fiction.
Anyway! I’m not linking to these fics because I’m lazy but they can all be found on my Masterlist post.
1.) The League of Villains Heroes
This is my favorite despite having way fewer readers than practically anything else I’ve written. It’s not x Reader so that’s probably the issue. It’s about the LoV rebuilding their lives after the end of the story, going to therapy, getting jobs, starting families, etc. But of course they get roped into a new threat that might just turn them into reluctant heroes. I love it because it’s so cathartic to write, finally giving these broken characters the endings I feel like they deserve. And exploring Touya reconnecting with his family has been a delight.
2.) The Dark Carnival
This is a horror AU about the LoV as members of a traveling carnival/circus and the Readers who get mixed up with them. So far I’ve done Shigaraki, Mr. Compress, and Twice. Spinner and then Dabi are upcoming. I’m really fond of this one because of the horror elements. I’m a huge horror fan and much of my original fictions is either horror or horror-related. I’m also very into carnivals. I love visiting them in real life and I love stories about them. It probably started with Vampire Circus but then there was Carnivale, Funhouse, AHS: Freakshow, and various other movies/shows.
3.) Breaktime
This is a Shigaraki x Reader fic where Reader is a waitress with a crush on Shigaraki, whom she’s only seen on the news, until he comes into the bar she works at. This one is special to me because it’s the first BNHA fic I ever wrote and I had so much fun with it.
4.) Trending Topics
This is a Dabi x Reader I wrote to celebrate Dabi’s Dance being animated. By a stroke of luck, I managed to post the fic on the same day the episode aired. It was based on an idea that had been brewing in my head for at least a year beforehand, waaaay before I started writing BNHA fanfiction. I actually thought about submitting it as a request to other writers! But I never did, and now I’m glad I didn’t because I got to write it myself.
5.) The Pirate and the Mermaid
This is an AU Shigaraki x Reader fic where Reader is a mermaid captured by Shigaraki, a pirate captain. This one was a lot of fun and was inspired by a lot of fantasies I had as a little girl (minus the smutty parts). I used to dream of being a mermaid and being “caught” by a handsome human man. Then we’d fall in love. That’s about as far as my childish mind took it, but as an adult I could add all sorts of fun lol.
Tagging anyone who wants to do this!

If i am a ghost now (then why still can't i fly?)
by Vigilant_Insomniac
Circus Gothica is stationed in Gotham during the winter.
The Batfam tries not to be prejudiced against every clown. Just because they have a creepy laugh and too much make-up, doesn't mean they are evil!
Yet strange things started happening ever since the circus returned from it's tour across the country.
Or: Control Freaks is my favorite episode, and i am absolutely surprised there aren't more fics with Freakshow in Gotham. Come on, folks. An evil clown that can control the dead! That's like it was made for this fandom fusion

Fandom character thing: Freakshow
Favorite Thing: He outs Danny in front of the whole world and for this reason this is probably my most watched ep. I love the whole lore and all the "what-ifs" about his 2nd episode. His 1st episode is pretty cool too in sort of a lore way, as it's the first time we really see Danny truly compromised in that sort of way. I think overall he has a ton of untapped potential. This was more than one thing but whatever fuck you.
Last Fave Thing: Like the rest of the show, his episodes just seem so....surface level? This isn't really about his character, but I just hate how he introduces these really dark and cool elements, and then just fucking does nothing with them. You know?
Fanon Pet Peeve: Honestly I don't think Freakshow's featured too much in fics, so I don't have a lot of fanon about him? I think we all just kinda collectively Forget that he went into the GiW's custody which could lead to some really interesting and cool fics where Danny get captured by the GiW *cough cough* *hint hint* but yeah he's kinda forgettable I guess likely because his episodes had literally negative depth to them.

When I was 6 years old my grandma rented The Grudge 3 (2009) on dvd and my older cousin showed it to me, and like I was slightly scared but overall fine bc I knew movies weren’t real…. Until the movie ended and my cousin gave me a whole speech abt how The Grudge franchise was based on a true story . And I didn’t believe her so she took me over to the computer and showed me a yahoo answers page where someone had asked “is kayako from the grudge real?” And the top answer was some troll being like “yes.” And then she decided that wasn’t enough and walked me thru my grandma’s trailer, showing me all the places that Kayako “likes to hide so she can kill little girls” . Including but not limited to: inside the pipes to the toilet and bathtub drain, in the cabinets below the sink, underneath our beds, on the ceiling, inside the pantry, under the floors, and inside the walls.
I was thoroughly convinced at that point, and instantly, Kayako became my biggest fear. For abt a year, I slept with my mom or my grandparents every single night, and I wouldn’t go anywhere by myself, but ESPECIALLY the bathroom. One time I was at my other grandma’s house and she was annoyed abt it so she refused to go in the bathroom with me, but I had to pee soooo bad and I could NOT go in there by myself and my cousins were laughing at me and wouldn’t go in with me either . So I ended up having an accident on the floor in front of my grandma’s bedroom door .
I wasn’t allowed to watch another horror movie until I was like eleven . I wasn’t even interested in watching any, all those years. I broke my no-horror streak when AHS Freakshow came out, but I had a group chat with friends that I had to sit there and text the whole time whenever I watched a new episode . Bc I would be soooo scared. Funny how horror quickly became my #1 favorite genre after that. Now I literally sit here home alone watching the most brutal, terrifying shit while like smoking blunts and doing my makeup

BNHA Boys watching their favorite TV shows with you pt 1
🦿📖Tenya Iida📖🦿
Tumblr media
After a long chaotic day of heroing, iida walks through the door and profoundly announces he’s home
You run to the door to welcome him and kiss his cheek - only to feel him dragging you to the couch seconds later
“Rough day?”
He just sighs while you grab the remote
“Big Bang Theory it is then”
He plops down on the sofa, pulling you down with him into a warm embrace
Lots of snuggles and forehead kisses - he will run his fingers through your hair while you lay on his lap
You can feel his whole body wiggle when he laughs it’s so cute -
💣💥Katsuki Bakugou💥💣
Tumblr media
This kid has been watching The Walking Dead since the first season
It doesn’t matter if you don’t want to watch it - he will drag your ass kicking and screaming to the couch
Someone got bitten by a zombie? “What a fuckin weakling”
Watching TWD with him is a ritual at this point - Every Sunday night you make nachos, drag all the blankets into the living room and snuggle in tight
You can feel his heart race when a jump scare pops up, but he won’t admit he got scared.
“I just wasn’t expecting it, dumbass!”
He giggles and pulls you into an embrace of small kisses
💛⚡️Denki Kaminari⚡️💛
Tumblr media
It’s 12am and both of you are wide awake
Both in your pjs, he reaches for the remote and turns on adult swim
Oh no
The Rick and Morty intro appears on the Tv and you know you’re in for a sleepless night
Not because you’re watching, no - because he’s laughing loud enough to keep you awake, telling you to look at the screen, and shakes your whole body when an exciting scene comes on
This kid only ate Mcdondals for weeks straight when the Szechuan sauce promotion was running
Eventually, you finally catch some Z’s when he calms down from the excitement and starts petting your head
☀️✨Mirio Togata✨☀️
Tumblr media
He’s a busy boy so he doesn’t have time to binge a full series
He quotes The Office more than he realizes. His favorite of all time, “Dwight, you ignorant slut”
He watches the fire drill episode when ever he’s had a hard day
A perfect day off would be watching it with you, feeling your body on his lap, and hearing your adorable giggles.
🗻❤️Eijiro Kirishima❤️🗻
Tumblr media
He will literally watch Bobs Burgers anywhere
At a party? On the toilet? In a meeting? Yes, yes and yes
But his FAVORITE place to watch it is with you
Wants to go as Gene and Tina on Halloween - wether he wants you or him to be Tina is still debatable
Will attempt to do their voice impressions just to make you giggle
During a steamy makeout session he stops, looks you dead in the eyes and says
“Your ass is grass and I’m gonna mow it.”
It ruined the mood but it was totally worth watching you roll off the couch in laughter
🐶💚Izuku Midoriya💚🐶
Tumblr media
Deku will watch any superhero show and fall in love with it in a heart beat
But Runaways is his favorite
It’s the perfect mix of heroism, quirkiness and humor
He will literally sit with and binge you for hours
L o v e s laying on your lap while you pet his head like a puppy
He will casually feed you popcorn and miss your mouth because his eyes are glued to the screen
🤍🧊Shoto Todoroki 🔥❤️
Tumblr media
Oh icythot our angel of a boy
When he first started game of thrones, he felt guilty watching all the spicy scenes
He had an internal debate whether he should watch it or not - because all of the sex - but he was so curious about what would happen next so he carried on
Trying to ask him a question while he’s watching? If you’re lucky he might reply within 10 minutes
“Baby where’s the charger?”
“...”
“Baby?”
“...huh....”
You’re at the point where you just laugh it off, give him a big smooch and snuggle right next to him
💜🐈 Hitoshi Shinsou 🐈💜
Tumblr media
Hope you love horror and sex because American Horror Story is all you two are watching aside from serial killer documentaries
Loves to yell “YoUrE aLl I WaNttT, YoUre AlL I HaAaaVe” at you when ever you get irritated at him
His favorite seasons in order? Murderhouse, Asylum, Cult, Coven, Freakshow, Apocalypse, Roanoke, and Hotel in that order
Don’t agree with that? He WILL fight you on it
Our cat boy loves watching it at night, mainly because he likes watching you look around the room in fear to make sure there’s nothing there - only to sneak attack spook you
In all reality he loves you very much even if he thinks your favorite seasons arent superior to his
Lots of tight snuggles and makeout sessions with this edgy baby
💜🐙Tamaki Amajiki 🐙💜
Tumblr media
Tamaki has seen ALL of the Netflix originals and Stranger Things still holds #1 in his heart (aside from you, of course)
Like it’s so hard to choose between his favorite shows because when he isn’t taking down villains he’s on his bed binge watching tv series
He’s still an anxiety filled emo boy what do you expect of him
Will be sad if you watch it without him so don’t
He may be a pro hero at this point but he’s a pro snuggler as well
He’s so w a r m??? Probably because his metabolism is always working but who cares!¡ He is your personal heater
He ships Joyce and Hopper like no other
Sorry I was so late posting! I have a really fun post in the making but it’s taking awhile to create ❤️ it will be worth it!
Also I didn’t add a few because I didn’t want this to be too long! If you want any of the others let me know and I will add them at the end of my part 2 when I do villains and pros 🖤

this tag about shows
(but ahs edition)
i saw this on @iacomary97 blog and wanted to do it, but instead of choosing five different shows id do my top five ahs seasons
1. hotel
2. apocalypse
3. coven
4. freakshow
5. murder house
Tumblr media
---------------------------------------------------------------------------
les questions
1. who is your favorite character in 2?
cordelia 1000000% i <3 her
2. who is your least favourite character in 1?
definitely that annoying kid that alex turned, who ended up turning his whole class and eating his teacher. yeah, so annoying!
3. what is your favourite episode of 4?
hmm, i haven't watched freakshow in a while, but i'd say probably ep 12 (i think) curtain call. i hate that dandy kills all the freaks (especially paul :( i love him sm) but it's satisfying to watch bette trick him and then kill him.
4. who is your favourite couple in 3?
zoe and kyle :)
5. who is your favourite couple in 2?
well there aren't many couples canonically... i'm not sure for that one
6. what is your favourite episode of 1?
flicker (ep 7) i love finding out about the backstories of the countess and james and valentino, with all the glitz on the 1920's!
7. what is your favourite episode of 5?
smouldering children (ep 10) - i really enjoyed the twist in discovering that violet was actually dead
8. who is your favourite actor in 4?
if we are talking exclusively freakshow based on how the actors portrayed their characters, i'd say sarah... i love bette and dot, and she did such a great job playing two very different people at the same time. matt fraser who plays paul is also amazing.
9. if you could be anyone from 4, who would you be?
hmm, well, none of them, coz apart from the twins, jimmy and desiree, they have horrific ends.
10. would a crossover between 3 and 4 work?
possibly! i really want to get another season of witches (tho without sarah, it wouldn't be the same), but idk maybe it could show witches in the 50's and somehow connect to the freaks or elsa or something??
11. pair two characters together from 1 that would make an unlikely, but strangely okay couple:
yes! i was waiting for a question like this! ok, sally and the countess. like it could work.
12. which has a better storyline overall: 3 or 5?
in terms of plot, then murder house (even though i prefer coven)

Hiii. In honor of AHS season 10 coming out later this month, I have decided to rank and elaborate my least favorite to my favorite seasons.
*REMEMBER* these are all just my opinion. Please do not attack me in any way about my opinion. This post is to simply put my thoughts on one of my favorite shows. Thank you!!
9.) Apocalypse.
Finishing this season was a very hard task to do. There were just so many better ideas that could've been incorporated into the plot. It didn't feel like a horror at all. Overall, very disappointed.
8.) Freakshow
After being told that this was a great season, I looked into it. I loved the vibe, that was about it. The first half was pretty good, I was on the edge of my seat, then it went downhill. Same thing with Apocalypse, there were so many improvements that could've been made.
7.) Cult
This season confused me. I don't know why or how but it did. There was just so many things that made me uncomfortable and made me take breaks almost every episode. It followed the same overarching plot but had so much back and forth, plotholes, continuity issues. It was just a lot. I also have a couple of the phobias put into this season so...that was fun.
6.) Murder House
No first season compared to the rest of a series is going to be amazing, but I really enjoyed the feeling of this season. The cast, the characters, it was all enjoyable. Not the best example of a horror show but i liked it.
5.) Asylum
This is where people would start getting mad at me...I liked it but the pace was pretty slow for me. But I still liked it!! The story was really interesting. That whole alien plot was weird and I didn't really like that, but it was good.
4.) 1984
I thought I would've hated this season but here we are. Out of all the intros, this is the one I hated the most. Like every other season's plot, it's not what I would've gone for. The first half was slow but I liked the second part of the season.
3.) Roanoke
This is the type of horror I want the rest of the show to be. The show within a show within a show was executed really well (considering that's hard to do...). Kathy Bates was amazing. Although, I am not the biggest fan of found footage, I liked the elements of found footage horror they put in.
2.) Hotel
This season does not get the rep it deserves! And I'll say it again! The twist was pretty good. I AM a JPM stan. I really loved this season. It was like a lil whodunit until the big twist. Liz Taylor supremacy!! And yes, I did cry while watching the season finale....
1.) Coven
You guys DO. NOT. UNDERSTANDDDD. I am in love with this season. Start to finish. Misty Day is my wife, that is not up for debate. I loved the soundtrack, the characters, the cast, the aesthetic. I know I'm supposed to hate her but Fiona's scene when she was getting her treatment (and reading ppl's minds) made me emotional. Idk. I love fleetwood mac and Stevie so seeing a lot of that was really cool.

//SPOILERS FOR AHSS//
Just my thoughts and feelings on the episodes!! Continue at your own risk, you have been warned.
So I just finished watching the first two episodes of American Horror Stories, and I have some thoughts and feelings. I'm not just going to shit on it because it wasn't everything I hoped it was going to be. I prefer to talk about my opinions and give constructive feedback.
Firstly, I thought the performances were pretty solid all the way through. I tried to keep in mind that an actor is only as good as what they are given. I thought that Sierra McCormick did an impressive job of portraying a complex, dynamic character. Especially considering she was only given two episodes to work with. I thought Matt Boner and Gavin Creel's characters provided a refreshing comic relief and felt well established through both episodes.
I think that the story's major downfall was that It was only two episodes. The main characters, especially Scarlett and Ruby, felt very underdeveloped. They both had complex backstories and tragic childhoods that shaped them into the characters we see on screen. But we aren't given enough time with the characters before their past trauma is revealed, to truly feel the emotional weight of their baggage. We are introduced to the characters, then all of a sudden, we are drowned in a wave of backstory with no time to process it because the show needs to move on to the next shocking scene due to its two-episode run-time. In Ruby's case, her character's introduction was her tragic childhood. So her character felt defined by only her past because we have no other information about her or the things she stands for or cares about. The characters feel very flat, and their character arcs, especially Scarlett's, felt very rushed and underdeveloped. This is frustrating because if there's one thing Ryan Murphy is good at, it's getting you so profoundly connected to the characters that you feel personally affected by their trials and tribulations. I found myself not caring when a character was distressed or put in a tense situation because I didn't have enough time to learn and understand the motives and reasoning behind their actions.
Now I understand that the show is an anthology and that each episode stands alone. I know writing an in-depth character that only has maybe an hour of screen time is very challenging. But there are ways to make your audience form a deep connection to a character even when their story only has a sixty-minute run-time. Look at Black Mirror, for example. Charlie Brooker is an excellent example of someone who knows how to write complex characters that the audience falls in love with, despite the short run-time of every episode. I think the major downfall is that they tried to fit way too much into a two-episode special that could have been perfect for a maybe six-episode limited series. It was a fun and engaging story, but it was stunted by its run-time.
I'm not going to go too deep into the writing. I thought It was a bit silly, but I think that was the intention. It felt very Ryan Murphy to me. He does a great job at writing very intense and mature dialogue. But I think it's fun when he gets to work on projects with a little more leniency regarding the writing. It felt very 'teenage slasher film,' which can be fun and add a level of absurdity to a bleak theme when done well. It was very reminiscent of its source material in terms of writing. I think they did an excellent job at maintaining the same level of tasteful absurdity that can be felt in seasons like Murder House (of course), Coven, and Apocalypse. Altogether, it felt very authentically Ryan Murphy.
I was very impressed with the camera work. There were a lot of unique shots. I thought the limited use of the fish-eye lens was a fun touch and brought me back to a lot of the camera work seen in Coven. I thought Loni Peristere's talent as a director could be felt through the individualistic nature of the camera work and the more gory scenes, which I thought were shot perfectly. He also directed iconic episodes like Devil's Night from Hotel, Forbidden Fruit from Apocalypse, and Tupperware Party Massacre from Freakshow, some of my favorite episodes in the show. I think he has done a consistently good job, and I was excited to learn that he will be directing a few episodes in Double Feature. I can't wait to see more of his work. They made a good choice choosing him.
To wrap up, I would give the two episodes a combined rating of 6/10. I thought it was aesthetically pleasing, the writing was very traditional Ryan Murphy, but the effect the run-time had on the character development bothered me. I thought this was a fun story, it was just a bit rushed, and the most important parts of crafting a solid story seemed to be forgotten.
Alrighty, folks, those are my thoughts. I probably won't do a big stream-of-consciousness for each episode. I just saw so many people mindlessly shitting on the episodes without giving them credit for what they did well, so I wanted to share my thoughts. Please feel free to add your own opinions! Thanks for reading!
(also, please, for the love of god, let Murder House rest in peace. I’m so sick of this fucking house holy fuck)

Like most GC natives, I hate this damned place in a special way only a Gothamite can. I grew up here. It’s gross, smells like a tire fire, the rich live in their high towers looking down on us all, I can’t walk to the corner to pickup a pack of smokes after dark, unless I’m packing at least my mag light(we’ll get to that), and we’ve got a new freakshow causing chaos every week. Don’t even get me started on the public transportation.
That being said, Gotham is MY town, y’know? Some out-of-towner says any of what I just said, I’m as likely as any Gothamite to knock their teeth in. See, I love this town as much as I hate it, in that special way only a Gothamite can. It’s hard to explain that to someone who isn’t from here.
So anyways, I work in sanitation. It’s not bad work, all thing considered. I do third shift tunnel walking. It’s a newer thing. See, after that Rat-King business, when that guy was kidnapped homeless people and forcing them to build something or other in the sewers, few years back, the city assigned Sani workers to do regular patrols to make sure nothing hinky is going on, y’know, like wannabe gangsters or shit like that.
Most of the guys hate tunnel walks. And I mean, that’s fair, there’s more of a chance to run into that big ass crocodile guy, or any of the other bozo’s Arkham can’t seem to keep ahold of. Of course I never saw the guy. Never saw much of anything, except a few teenagers playing thug. So I volunteer to do most of the walks. Got me one of those big metal flashlights, my mag, because you can bust a skull with those things, if you need to. I also have a piece, but we’re not supposed to carry while we’re on the job, so I usually don’t, unless one of the loonies is loose. This wasn’t one of those time, just so you know.
It was this past Halloween. I was kinda pissed because one of my buds was playing a show at The Hole, that dive over on Park. Well, I clocked in, and my super asked if anyone wanted to take the Walks tonight. I figured eight hours strolling was as good as I was going to get. My hand shot up, and into the tunnels I went. We’re not supposed to, but I like listening to podcasts while I walk. Vicki Vale’s Gotham Report is a favorite of mine. So I pop a headphone in, only one, I’m not stupid, and I start off into the dark.
Tons of concrete and steel kills any kind of cell signal, so I download my podcasts before I head down. This episode was an exciting one for me, because she was talking about an old Gotham legend. So if you grew up in GC, you were probably raised on stories about Solomon Grundy, who would emerge from the swamps to the north to gobble up kids who misbehave. Well, if you’re old enough. I hear kids nowadays are treated to threats of the Batman coming through their windows. Not sure which is a worse prospect.
Anyways Vale goes into the founding of Gotham, and the Five Families. Every kid learns about them in grade school, Alan Wayne, Theodore Cobblepot, Edward Elliot, Jeremiah Arkham, and Ezekiel Kane.
So story goes that the founders had contracted a cousin of Wayne, a guy by the name of Cyrus Gold. Gold was a merchant of some influence. The stories vary on the why, and the how, but some how, Gold was murdered, and his body dumped in that section of marshlands to the north, Slaughter Swamp.
So according to Vale, Theodore Cobblepot was into shady stuff way back when, and he had his eyes on Gold’s businesses. Old Theo was a cold dude from reports. His daughter, Millie Jane, she was fond of nursery rhymes, so old Theo would make men who crossed him recite them from memory before he wacked them. So Gold gets walked out to Slaughter Swamp. He’s blindfolded, and he’s reciting that old one, Solomon Grundy. Y’know, born on a Monday, etcetera etcetera. Theo pops him, plants him, absorbs his business.
Jump forward. The urban legend starts up, based on that version of the story. Kids say that if you say the rhyme in Slaughter Swamp on Halloween night, he’ll rise from the swamp and get you. You know how all those old stories, they never say what the ghosty or ghouly is gonna do, just that he’ll get you. I remember taking my first girlfriend out to Slaughter Swamp to summon Solomon Grundy. Lots of teens did it when I was in school, but no one I knew ever saw him.
Anyways, the route I took that night had an old disused outfall into Slaughter Swamp. Bruce had it redirected when he took over Wayne Enterprises a few years back, but the outfall is still open, and it’s a good spot to stop and have a smoke, about halfway through the route, so when I got there, I stepped out and had me a smoke.
I was on the phone with this girl I’d been chatting with, she does maintenance on the electricals running under the city, so we see each other at work sometimes. Anyways, I made this joke about being in Slaughter, and trying to summon Grundy. Just being funny, y’know. She’s loving it. She’s a Gotham Girl herself, but she never got taken out to Slaughter, but she’s egging me on, so I go for it.
It’s a simple rhyme:
“Solomon Grundy,
Born on a Monday,
Christened on Tuesday,
Married on Wednesday,
Took ill on Thursday,
Grew worse on Friday,
Died on Saturday,
Buried on Sunday,
That was the end,
Of Solomon Grundy.”
I wait. I say nothing, she says nothing. I’m hoping to build the tension and scream, give her a scare, y’know? Only, about the time I’m planning on screaming, my mag goes dead, so does my phone. Now the phone doesn’t surprise me. I carry a portable power bank for that, but with the concrete, you don’t get a lot of signal, so it doesn’t do much good, so I hadn’t hooked it up to charge. But the mag? Those batteries were brand new at the start of the shift. I always change my batteries before I go into the tunnels. Anyone who works underground will tell you there’s nothing more important than your light, y’know? And I always carry plenty of spares. Nobody wants to be down there in the dark. I always, ALWAYS put new batteries in before I start my shift.
There on the outfall, you get a bit of moonlight. More than in the tunnels. I’ll admit, I was spooked a bit, I should’ve had more than a few hours left on those batteries. So I was kinda rushing to get the old ones out and a spare pare in, and yeah, I let the old ones roll off into the swamp. I mean yeah, I was jumpy, but I wasn’t jumping at shadows, y’know? I’m a GC native. We’re tough stock, and hard to actually scare. Like really scare, y’know?
So the batteries roll off the concrete block in front of the outfall. Plop plop, into the swamp. Suddenly it gets real quiet. I mean dead quit. The owls, y’know, the ones on that preserve out there? Quiet. Bugs and night birds? Quiet. Hell, I don’t think I was even breathing, y’know? Just felt real tense. Your eyes play tricks on you at night. In the dark, you see things different, and out by the outfall it’s real dark, forest dark, y’know? Even with the super moon we had on Halloween this year, it was stupid, mind tricking dark out there. But I swear to you, there was fog rising from the swamp. And it wasn’t there before my light went out. Thick shit too.
Then I heard the splash. Like something big coming out of the water. I’ll admit that I was spooked. But I didn’t run or nothing. My eyes were adjusting to the dark, enough to make out the big shape moving towards me. I managed to fumble the new batteries into the mag about the time I asked:
“Who’s there?”
Thinking I’d stumbled on some teens playing a prank, y’know.
I got my light on right before the thing responded. Damn thing must have been nine foot tall, and wide as a truck. Dressed in the ragged, rotten remains of a suit. Sonovabitch looked like a jacked albino Frankenstein, like all rotted, deep sunken eyes and hollow cheeks, lumbering like it had a bad leg, skin and hair were bleach white, and the fingernails and teeth were all yellow and sick looking. And it spoke. Sounded about like rocks rubbing together. The thing lumbered towards me, hands outstretched, reaching as if to grab me, it rasped:
“Solomon Grundy, born on a Monday.”
I booked. I mean, I think it took me fifteen minutes to reach city limits? And I didn’t go back underground for months. It took me awhile to work up the nerve, y’know? But I’ve been thinking about it, and all the stories say Grundy only comes out on Halloween, right? So I should be fine as long as I’m not down there by Slaughter Swamp on Halloween, right? I should be fine.
Right?
