where are all the 200k word post-day of unity fics where alador is going through a nasty and increasingly messy divorce and trying to help rebuild the boiling isles and also fixing his relationship with his kids but he's also struggling with having his own autonomy again and his own guilt over not being an actual father to his kids and he doesnt know who is outside of his responsibilities of work/family bcus he never had actual friends once he left school and once upon a time alador was the one to show darius there's more to life than what you can do for other people and now darius has the opportunity to help alador relearn the same thing and maybe together they can both rediscover what real love feels like again after years of bitterness

i really enjoy the understated trend in The Owl House that almost everytime we get a character's flashback to something we saw in a previous episode, the lines are slightly off

it always irks me when in media everyone seems to have photographic memory and latches onto the specific phrasing of whatever was said. TOH sometimes has flashbacks quote the original scene directly, but other times it has them be Just Close Enough that if you yourself probably wouldn't spot the difference unless you were paying close attention; they get the gist of it and maybe some specific turns of phrase that stuck with them, but not necessarily the exact literal wording

i especially like how understated it is. often when showing How The Character Remembers Something as different from how it actually happened, stories have the flashback go very overboard in framing things in ways that are blatantly colored by the character's perception, and while that is in itself usually a fascinating glimpse into how they percieve the world, i really like how realistically Just Subtly Different recollections are in The Owl House

#the owl house #sushi speaks #the ones that stick out most are luzs recollection of the promise to her mom and the collectors rhymes #the former is remembered as being harsher than it actually was because it was those unintentional implications that weighed on her most #and the latter because come on who the hell would remember the specific adlib poetry that a spooky shadow child said. #she remembered the vibes as more overtly sinister because i mean the whole experience was sinister #and she did remember the specific wording of 'nine bright hues' because shes smart and gets the implication that it means the covens #but i enjoy the implication that this extends to other memories we have seen #like. raine and edas meeting probably wasnt EXACTLY like she tells it down to the exact words but it was probably largely accurate #its just that its unreasonable for someone to actually remember Literally Every Word of conversations that happened an hour ago #let alone 30 years ago #and ofc amitys dad sounding far more authoritative in her memories of her parents ordering her to cut off contact with willow #we have no indication alador was ever THAT proactive in curating amitys friendgroup #but he was probably present and he probably did back odalia up on the issue #and because amity looks up to her father she internalized it as it being a decision that came from both of them #and as such in her memories theyre both firmly and decidedly ordering her to stop seeing her

I'm gonns give this person massive abandonment issues! #this will make me feel bad too!! i will suffer because of this but i don't know other ways to live!!! #(at least. that's how i envision the darius/alador breakup i know it's very vague in canon) #(but like. compare how happy they were as kids to how miserable they can both be as adults. they are worse off for this) #i think it'd be neat if willow was the person who nudged darius back towards alador #bc she knows what it's like being hung up on someone you're convinced hates you. it sucks!! #and she's so so forgiving as long as she feels like the person she's forgiving is actually going to put in effort to change #(hence how after Amity follows through on her promise from understanding willow to not let Boscha bully willow anymore- #-IN wing it like witches THEN we see amity get to be a part of the best friend montage. she followed through and that proves she's trying) #(and then obviously hunter stuck his neck out for them with nothing to gain after her hurt them and that showed her that he can learn- #-and change for the better and hence she gave him that opening if he wanted it) #(it's still his responsibility to be a good friend but she'll try if he will. willows forgiving but she's not a doormat) #(and i feel like she wants to know the ppl in her life see her as someone worth improving for bc of her self worth issues) #ANYWAY that was a long winded way of saying she'd have a valuable perspective to lend to darius who seems to be similar to her in many ways #anyway what if i cried abt them
