Thoughts on OFMD/fans/antis after binging during an ice storm post cancellation and interacting on Tumblr:

-I expected more slavery being aware of antis that always use that. idk if it's fair to blame super fictionalized versions of real people for slavery in a what's essentially a magical au when it's not really a plot point and the only character to call someone a slave is a British officer who becomes a hostage/is clearly a dick

-as an American I thought "Stede" rhymed with Ed and was disappointed to learn it was Steed. I was also confused by Rhys's name

-as a Brooklyn 99 girlie, be careful what you wish for in getting picked up. we got picked up for 2 more seasons and I almost wish we weren't

-similarly to b99, this is a fictionalized universe where the characters are the "moral" version of a pretty terrible career. Their harm is acknowledged occasionally but mostly glossed over to stay a comedy. some suspended disbelief is required.

-I think they bit off more than they could chew with Ed being abusive in s2. maybe it was lost to budget cuts but holy shit

-yes, it's ridiculous that people raised tens of thousands for a tv show. It's also a big fucking deal that a show uniquely pro lgbtq+ got cancelled for no real reason. it's not disrespectful to Palestine/Conga/anyone else to care about queer issues in your own countries

-the izcourse is wild. I think he was the most interesting character in s2 but not the main character. I think his death could have been better with another episode of enjoying his life and learning to balance himself, but hbo said no thanks

-loved seeing all the happy and fulfilled women. pleasantly surprised by how the fandom treats Mary

-I was surprised to see how many people hated the ending. Clearly it wasn't perfect, but Ed and Stede were together and happy and the crew sailed into a beautiful sunset

-I was not the target audience at all and still really enjoyed it. I like a good love story and it was fun and campy. It's lovely seeing people feel so connected and represented.

YES!! YES!!! THAT'S EXACTLY IT!!!!!!! and like u said not only spn and not even just in white dude shows, i see this tendency very clearly even - or maybe especially - in shows that actually are diverse

it's the same thing with tog fandom the obsession with bi booker (the one relevant character other than the straight up villains who is actually straight-coded lmao) despite the fact that tog has a canon queer couple and two heavily queer coded characters, plus a black woman with no hints to her sexuality/gender identity that could be hced as queer just as well, yet never is. and the bi booker hc thing gets to the point where i've seen "tog + text posts" style posts and others where booker was the oNLY character to get queer-related posts. the ONLY one. despite us having FOUR actually queer characters. f o u r. and him being the only one who has absolutely nothing pointing to queerness

or with sh fandom and that infamous "sh pride edits" post that gave more attention to the straight characters than the canonically queer ones, lmao, going as far as literally not mentioning the canon wlw to focus on clary and jace, who are very obviously straight in-text, and other minor white straight characters (the straight characters of color obviously didn't get the same treatment as their white counterparts). or the hype over latino alec, who is very obviously white, and that literally ignores headcanoning, like, izzy and maryse, the ones actually played by woc at least, as latinas as well. and of course i'm not even gonna mention how the actual latino characters are treated by the same people who nut all over themselves at the idea of latino alec. and we all know that, as racist as sh is, screen time has nothing to do with this, cuz lack of screen time never stopped this fandom from obsessing with lydia, max, or underhill, all characters that have considerably less screen time than raphael. and i'm pretty sure max and underhill have less screen time than even bat. i mean, for starters, bat had an actual struggle shown on-screen. neither of the other three can say the same

or the b99 fandom which (problematics of the show aside) loves and adores the idea of bi jake, but rarely ever talks about rosa, the canon bi character. or even the canon gay couple, which one would expect would get a lot of attention, yet is rarely mentioned 

and i could go on, but my point is that yes, even in fandoms for pieces of media that actually are diverse (with varying degrees of handling that diversity well) the fandom as a rule always picks the ones that aren't to obsess with and project diversity unto, even queer fans. and it's so obvious and plain to see it's honestly almost insulting

I’ve posted before about how something doesn’t have to be Deliberately Evil(tm) to make you uncomfortable or go against your morals, so here are some related ideas, all of which can and do coexist:

You are not required to “separate the art from the artist” if knowing bad shit about the artist has ruined the art for you. It happens, and it’s okay. It also sucks, and I’m sorry.

Someone who can separate the art from the artist is not necessarily a bad person, and they don’t necessarily take the bad shit less seriously than they should.

You can be uncomfortable with individual parts of the art (or the artist) and still like it overall.

It’s okay to have one joke or one detail ruin the whole thing for you.

Just because you’re uncomfortable with something, that does not mean that you can require other people to feel the same way you do. This also goes the other way: if someone else is uncomfortable with something, you can’t require them to like it anyway.

Sometimes you can like or dislike artists or works of art without needing to make it a moral crusade.

“It makes me uncomfortable” is, itself, a complete sentence and a complete justification that should be respected.

some of you may be wondering why i’m mad abt ppl moving on so quickly from the terry debacle now that he’s apologized and it’s bc his tweets can be used for shit like this now -

a christian, homophobic blog, using it to justify why homosexuality (and “gay parenting” as they’ve so helpfully tagged) is “wrong” - never mind the intense internalized homophobia on display here.

whether he intended to or not, terry handed an overflowing box of ammo to homophobes with his tweets over the past few days. do i think he did it on purpose? i don’t. but that doesn’t change the fact that that’s what’s happening.

and yet, fandom is quick to move on from this, see it as nothing more than a little glitch in the simulation, just bc stephanie invested her own time, energy, and emotions into educating terry. personally, i find that a little unappreciative for stephanie and not challenging enough for terry. he still hasn’t quite owned up his words (his language was very much “i’m sorry you felt this way/you interpreted my words this way” instead of “i’m sorry i was wrong/i said something bad”), and yet everyone is trying to drop it.

this is why lgbtq+ fans have expressed their discomfort and shared negative experiences in this fandom space. ppl get to yell abt how much they want jake and amy to practically fuck onscreen, live on a nationally televised show, yet fans with queer hcs are shut down.

also, let’s not forget the fact that rosa has yet to have a fleshed-out romance with a girl a la her romantic subplots with pimento and marcus, also holt and kevin have never kissed onscreen???

so yeah i - and many other lgbtq+ fans - are still pretty mad.

but i’m glad you all feel you can just move on with your lives, sighing in relief how glad you are this is aaaall over. i would hate for others to have to feel this hurt. :’)

I have a petty, genuine loathing for any post about how Brooklyn 99 is OMG THE BEST MOST PROGRESSIVE SHOW EVER YOU MUST WATC H IT, but especially if they contain stuff like this:

the meta i promised aka the “it is that deep” take of this post

i think the appeal of Ted/Rebecca as a ship to a lot of lgbt folks first and foremost is: Ted. he’s a nonthreatening male character who is empathetic and emotional and his kindness comes from deep within and anything he does for Rebecca is purely because he likes her, cares about her, and just wants to brighten her day. he never has an ulterior motive and he’s a man that women would fully feel safe around (he’s not the first fictional man to have this energy ofc and he’s not the last but ykwim). now of course, characters would fall a tad bit flat if they didn’t have a little trauma as a treat, and Ted definitely has his Baggage™. but his angst and trauma being part of who he is doesn't exist to justify his shitty behavior, but rather his past is why he tries his damn hardest to take care of others and is a helpless people pleaser. he’s also not remotely threatened by Rebecca’s strength (or height which hooo the amount of men who would squirm at the idea of a woman being 6′) or feels the need to have to “be the man” around her. even when he defends her against Rupert, he doesn’t gloat or take credit for it and it’s meant to empower her and give her agency to have the confidence to stand up to Rupert herself (and she does!)

then there’s the fact that mlm/wlw shippers tend to value nuances and we seem to enjoy reading between the lines and catching contextual clues, which tedbecca has in spades. though i’ll also say that this is a skill we had to unfortunately obtain due to lack of lgbt rep for years (and thus prone to getting queerbaited). it’s getting better now and we don’t need to rely so heavily on that, but y’know, meta is fun and who doesn’t like meta? here’s the thing: i’m experiencing a familiar fandom experience between Ted/Rebecca and the good ol’ lgbt ships of the early naughts and 2010′s

unlike the m/f ships that are currently out there (i can only speak about the two that i know the most about: Bradley/Cory from The Morning Show or Roman/Gerri from Succession) where the actors and tptb actively talk about their relationship and tease their audience about the romance that’s bound to happen, Jason Sudeikis and his writers (and Hannah Waddingham) are super tight-lipped about Ted/Rebecca’s potential romance, they don’t confirm or deny yet they also haven’t claimed that the two are just friends and will only stay friends (had they done that we’d all have a easier time here tbh). they go as far as to do that thing that writers used to do with lgbt ships, claiming the characters mean a lot to each other, how they’re intertwined in each others lives, how they define each other and save each other. which by the way, we as the audience are witnessing with our own two eyes. the things they talk about? it’s in the show, front and center, it’s unavoidable. but the romantic chemistry and the clearly laid out parallels that we see have completely flown over so many people’s heads. this is the first m/f ship that i’ve encountered and participated in where 1. the antis outnumber the shippers, 2. the antis are super against them having a romantic relationship and strongly insist that they are merely platonic, and their reasoning isn’t because there’s another equally convincing or good pairing that they think Ted and/or Rebecca should belong to, but purely because “they don’t see it”; and any counterpairing they try to toss into their argument can’t stand its ground against the canonical evidence that Ted/Rebecca are the most logistical pairing outside of Roy/Keeley. that, or they continue on their tirade of “there’s not enough m/f friendships on screen” when i can list 5 shows off the top of my head that have wonderfully written, deep, platonic m/f relationships that are at the same level of importance as romantic relationships (here’s some: The Good Wife, Elementary, Parks and Rec, Schitt’s Creek, The Morning Show, B99... i can go on...?)

(there’s also the whole “well Rebecca could end up alone! she’ll come to learn that she’s a strong independent woman who needs no man!!” argument as if her crying to Ted about her fear of being alone or her desperation to be in a relationship just so she could feel something isn’t a large part of her character simply wanting to be cared for and fully loved since she was in a very emotionally abusive marriage for 12 years. as if Roy’s “you deserve someone who makes you feel like you’ve been struck by fucking lightning” doesn’t carry any weight for Rebecca. but i’m not going to get into that today because i am deeply terrified the show is going to do this and i am not the one that’s going to speak that shit into the universe 🤡)

it’s interesting to me that Ted/Rebecca as a ship relies on a lot of hints (that i personally think aren’t subtle at all but 🤷‍♂️), parallels, and storytelling tactics that are often used on lgbt ships, and the people who do see it are lgbt (+ the het fans that have eyes i gotchu ✊🏼). there’s the classic slow burn we’re familiar with, the friends to lovers trajectory, the concept of soulmates, being emotionally vulnerable around each other-- all the fictional tropes we love. and for some unknown reason, there are more people who don’t want this incredibly healthy and emotionally supportive relationship to be romantic. it’s giving me war flashbacks sans the homophobia except now there’s this hilarious heterophobia coming from a bunch of people who suddenly reject the concept of romance entirely????

i wouldn’t dare compare them to the m/f slow burn blueprint ship MSR but it sure... feels like it. and now i just realized i could’ve used MSR to do this meta but i’m not well versed enough in them so this is the only comparison i can give you 😳

tl;dr tedbecca is popular amongst lgbt folks because they’re being presented in a similar fashion as the good ol’ non-canon lgbt ships (that 200% would’ve been canon if those shows aired today) down to the antis wanting them to “stay platonic”

All of the noncon or incest fic that I’ve ever read did none of the harm that liking even tame detective shows as a young teenager did in terms of teaching me bad stuff yet I’ve never seen Law and Order or anything like it on antis problematic media lists or people who watch it on their list of targets

To be clear I don’t think people who watch it should be harassed either and now that I’m older and much more educated I can better watch those shows without falling for the propaganda or lies they spread (though I don’t like them anymore) so I think it is possible to critically consume them

But the hypocrisy is infuriating

I’ll bring up my own experiences because I feel like they’re relevant here. I didn’t watch many cop shows growing up, except for the occasional NCIS that didn’t do anything except make me realize that I had a thing for goths, but I did get really into Brooklyn 99 when I was in my late teens.

At that point, I was just getting into radical leftism and wasn’t nearly as aware of propaganda and the ways that police abuse is so normalized, and ended up overlooking a lot of things in the show that were shown as funny or quirky.

And then one day I was reading about dismantling law enforcement and the idea of “one bad egg” being applied to police and I caught myself thinking about B99. Specifically, I recoiled from the idea of the law enforcement system being inherently corrupt because I was using a fictional show as an example to myself of individual cops making a difference. I haven’t watched a single episode since, and looking back on all the shit I just glossed over before, I’m glad.

And I’m not saying that everyone reacts that way or that it’s impossible to watch cop shows without being tricked like, but copaganda is something that is very prominent in our current social climate and it plays on existing beliefs and ideas to manipulate the audience. Shipping, and fandom in general, cannot be honestly compared to that sort of wide-scale social manipulation.
