So I'm a huge fan of Uta. What do you think about Itori and him?

I don't belive he never knows to be the crush of his female best friend. Maybe he doesn't love her back or he doesn't want to ruin their friendship... Or maybe he is just gay. But Idk, I would belive he is more bisexual.

We can assure reading the Manga, that he is most for the boys, for example when the Quinx squad went to him, he was very flirty with the guys less with Saiko.

I think Uta and Itori have fucked before, but they don’t anymore. It’s not their thing anymore. 

I think Uta is bi or pan, somewhere in that realm. He likes women and men both, but it varies. 

As for his relationship with Yomo, I think they’re FWBs and that they both secretly love each other but neither will admit it because their lives are dangerous and they may die and loving someone makes that harder.

Yomo cùng Touka rời khỏi nơi đã từng là Anteiku, chốn dành cho những kẻ lạc lối. Kể từ ngày cuộc truy quét Anteiku diễn ra, Yomo không nói một lời. Sự im lặng đó trông thật lạnh lùng, thật bạc bẽo nhưng Touka, hơn ai hết hiểu rằng trái tim anh đã vụn vỡ. Cả hai đều mất đi mảnh đất bình yên dành cho mình, đều mất ngôi nhà đã nâng niu mình suốt bao năm.

Ghoul không phải con người. Trong từ điển của Ghoul không có khái niệm của hai tiếng "tự do". Cuộc đời Ghoul là một vòng luẩn quẩn của đi săn , bị săn và tồn tại. Touka chính là nạn nhân của cái quy luật vận hành khắc nghiệt đó. Cô chớm nghĩ về những tháng ngày chui lủi như lũ chuột hoang của mình và Ayato. Máu, tiếng van xin, tiếng gào khóc đến lạc giọng...nghe thật ghê tởm đúng không. Đến nay, những ám ảnh đó vẫn đôi lúc khiến dây thần kinh của cô căng như dây đàn trong mỗi giấc mộng ướt nhẹp và tanh nồng mùi máu. Quay cuồng trong những trận chiến chém giết và tranh giành con mồi, chạy trốn khỏi chiếc mũi thính của kẻ thù và những lưỡi quinque sắc bén của đám Bồ câu. Tự đặt mình đứng giữa ranh giới của sống và chết sẽ khiến phần trăm sinh tồn của hai chị em lên cao hơn. Đó là cách cô và Ayato tồn tại khi còn là những đứa trẻ. Nhưng sau tất cả... cô muốn sống. Đúng vậy, không phải tồn tại mà là sống. Touka cũng đã từng được "sống" thật hạnh phúc và yên bình với cha, với Ayato, với những người hàng xóm . Dù cho họ đã phản bội gia đình cô, cướp đi nhà của ba cha con, cướp đi chốn thanh bình đã mang lại cho cô cảm giác là một con người nhưng cô không thể nào ngăn mình muốn hòa nhập vào thế giới đó lần nữa. Và Anteiku đã đưa cô trở về với giấc mộng cô hằng ao ước. Cô được đi học, được làm việc ở quán café – nơi mọi người cùng nhau sum họp. Ở thế giới loài người, cô được gặp những vị khách thật đáng yêu, nhưng cũng không kém những khách hàng khó chịu khiến cô phát cáu. Cô được nếm trải sự yêu thương của một người cha ấm áp từ ngài quản lí Yoshimura. Được quen biết với những người bạn mới như Koma, như Irimi, như Hinami đáng yêu hay như Nishiki đầu đất. Và ở đây, Touka cũng đã gặp được những người khiến trái tim cô trở nên mềm mại như Yoriko và ...như đồ ngốc Kaneki . Quá khứ càng đẹp, hiện thực càng tàn khốc. Mọi thứ lướt nhanh như tro bụi, không một khoảnh khắc nào mủi lòng dừng lại để Touka nắm giữ.

Ba tháng trôi qua kể từ ngày Anteiku sụp đổ, Touka mất hai tháng để có thể ăn uống như bình thường và mất hầu hết mọi đêm để thao thức. Những ngày đầu tiên, cô gần như không ngủ. Đôi mắt lúc nào cũng sưng đỏ. Khuôn mặt thì nhếch nhác, mệt mỏi. Mỗi lần thấy cô, Yomo chỉ liếc nhìn và thở dài. Nhưng Touka không quan tâm vì cô vẫn đang mải mê trong cái vỏ bi thương của mình. Cô liên tục tự dằn vặt mình bằng những câu " Nếu như..."

Nếu như ngày đó cô không nóng nảy và bất cẩn đi trả thù cho chị Ryouko, có lẽ Anteiku đã không đến bước cùng này.

Nếu như cô không mềm lòng gia nhập Anteiku, có thể mọi người bây giờ vẫn hạnh phúc.

Nếu như ... Nếu như....

Hai tiếng " nếu như " đó ăn mòn ý chí cô. Nước mắt không ngừng tuôn ra từ hai hốc mắt đã đỏ hoe. Cô không thể ngăn được những giọt lệ đang khao khát được giải phóng khỏi nỗi buồn đang đong đầy linh hồn. Cho dù có khóc đến mù, cô cũng không muốn dừng lại. Cô nghĩ về Anteiku trong hơi nước mịt mù, rồi cô nghĩ về quãng thời gian lang thang cùng Ayato , cuối cùng dừng lại tại căn hộ nhỏ có bốn người luôn tràn ngập tiếng cười. Touka nhếch miệng, tự thưởng cho mình một nụ cười cay đắng. Nếu có cơ hội được viết một bản tóm tắt về cuộc đời mình, chắc chắn cô sẽ không sợ hãi mà ghi : mất mẹ, mất cha, mất Ayato, mất Anteiku, mất Yoriko và mất tên ngốc Kaneki.. Quả là những dấu mốc đáng nhớ khiến người đọc ấn tượng sâu sắc.

Cô tự hỏi không biết Yoriko đang làm gì ? Liệu Yoriko đã biết cô là Ghoul chưa ? Chắc hẳn Yoriko sẽ cảm thấy sợ hãi lắm khi biết sự thật. Nhỡ đâu Yoriko cảm thấy cô thật đáng ghê tởm và sẽ nghĩ cô đang tìm cách hãm hại mọi người ? Dù sao thì mọi chuyện cũng đâu còn quan trọng. Cô đã phải rời xa Yoriko, rời xa con người cô yêu thương vô cùng. Những kí ức về Yoriko luôn là giấc mộng đẹp với Touka, chỉ tiếc rằng cô phải tỉnh dậy quá sớm. Nếu thời gian thương tình, cô đã có thể kết thúc tuổi trẻ của mình bằng cách giữ lời hứa đi chơi với Yoriko ngày hôm đó. Đây đã có thể là một cái kết hoàn hảo. Còn Ayato thì sao? Chắc hẳn thằng ngốc đó vẫn đang luẩn quẩn với bọn Aogiri khốn kiếp ? Đã bao giờ nó tự hỏi bản thân việc mình làm đang là sai trái và gây tổn thương cho mọi người...? Touka khẽ bật cười. "Sai trái " ? Có lẽ cô không có quyền được nghĩ về điều này. Chính bản thân Touka khi sinh ra đã là một điều sai trái. Những kẻ như cô đáng ra không nên xuất hiện trên thế gian . Đầu óc cô lại mơ màng hướng về một không gian tưởng tượng. Nơi không có Ghoul tồn tại chắc hẳn sẽ thanh bình lắm. Con người không phải ngày đêm sợ hãi những con quỷ ăn thịt và những con quỷ đó sẽ không bao giờ phải sống chui lủi, cay nghiệt hay hứng chịu mọi ánh mắt khinh thường, ghê tởm đổ dồn về phía mình. Khi ở không gian đó, tên ngốc Kaneki chắc chắn vẫn đang cười thật vui vẻ và đang thao thao bất tuyệt về đống sách tẻ ngắt của hắn. Kaneki sẽ có một cuộc đời thật đẹp nếu không gặp Rize...Không, cuộc đời hắn sẽ thật đẹp nếu như không có Ghoul. Kaneki là một con thí trên ván cờ khắc nghiệt này. Càng ngày hắn càng bước xa thế giới con người. Càng ngày hắn càng bước xa cô để dấn thân vào thế giới của kẻ khao khát sức mạnh - thế giới lạnh lùng, vô tình và biến chất. Giờ đây, hắn đã đi quá xa. Cô đã từng nói với Yomo rằng cô tin Kaneki sẽ trở về với mọi người, trở về với Anteiku. Nhưng đôi lúc, cô vẫn hoài nghi về niềm tin của mình. Kaneki biến mất, không một dấu vết để cô có thể bám vào đó làm cơ sở để tiếp tục chờ đợi. Vậy mà sau tất cả, cô vẫn ngóng chờ hắn sẽ quay về. Đây là kiên định hay ngu ngốc đây ?

" Sau khi đã đuổi hắn đi như thế, hắn có thèm quay lại không?"

Ba tháng rưỡi sau sự kiện Anteiku, Touka nằm trên giường trằn trọc. Có lẽ tên Kaneki đang đi lạc ở đâu đó. Mặc dù trông hắn ngố thế thôi nhưng cũng thông minh lắm, chắc chắn sẽ tìm được đường về. Nhưng giờ Anteiku mất rồi, hắn sẽ phải về đâu ? Hắn cần có một bến đỗ để trở về.

Bốn tháng sau ngày Anteiku mất, Touka và Yomo đang ngồi ăn tối. Cô dè dặt quan sát sắc mặt anh nhưng dường như việc đó là vô ích. Yomo thuộc kiểu người liệt cơ mặt.

" Yomo, em có chuyện muốn nói với anh. "

Yomo ngẩng lên nhìn Touka chằm chằm.

"Tốt. Không có cảm xúc gì. ", Touka thầm nghĩ.

" Em nghĩ em đã khóc đủ rồi và em đang rất chán. Có lẽ em cần làm việc gì đó. "

" Em muốn làm gì ?", Yomo băn khoăn.

" Em muốn giống ngài Yoshimura. Em muốn tạo một nơi mọi người có thể cùng nhau tụ tập."

" Ý em là sao ?"

" Em nghĩ rằng em và anh có thể mở một quán café giống như Anteiku vậy. Dù sao chúng ta cũng phải kiếm tiền để trang trải cho những sinh hoạt khác."

Yomo im lặng không nói gì nhưng cô biết anh có vẻ như không thích ý tưởng đó lắm.

" Dù sao chúng ta cũng đã chuyển sang quận khác, bọn Bồ câu vẫn sẽ mải mê ở quận 20 thôi. Em biết anh yêu quý ngài Yoshimura nhiều như thế nào. Em muốn hai chúng ta cùng nhau thực hiện ý nguyện của ngài ấy. Khi em vẫn đang lạc lối, chính ngài đã mang em về Anteiku và chăm sóc em như người thân. Cũng đã đến lúc em cứu giúp những kẻ lạc lối khác rồi."

" Nếu em muốn mở quán café, chúng ta sẽ mất nhiều thời gian và tiền bạc để chuẩn bị."

" Em có thể đợi."

" Nếu vậy trong lúc chờ đợi, hãy nói cho anh ý tưởng của em."

Do you think there's much lgbt representation in Tokyo Ghoul? I know we have characters such as Nico (gay) and Mutsuki (trans) but I didnt know if there were any more.

I think there’s a pretty sizeable cast of LGBT+ characters in Tokyo Ghoul, actually - I just also happen to think the representation is pretty bad and that there’s a lot of negative coding. I’ll try and keep this short but here’s who I can think of off the top of my head:

→Mutsuki is a trans man and his struggle with his gender identity is tightly woven into his entire storyline in a lot of disturbing ways i.e. it’s a device used to reflect his mental instability and violent inclinations. He’s also in love with Haise, which is written as, uh, a little unhealthy.

→Big Madam is a trans woman who seemingly projects her own dysphoria onto her ‘loved’ one (Juuzou), a child that’s been snatched from his family and is forced to disembowel others for entertainment; she wants him to remain a feminine ‘doll’ so she castrates him. She was always abusive but some of that is anchored specifically in her relationship with gender.

→Juuzou’s gender is brought up a lot - after he’s taken in by the CCG, he’s registered as ‘sexless’ and ridiculed by other investigators (not that this is presented as good or fair). He’s constantly infantilised throughout the story as a result, and it becomes a running gag.

→Kanae (afab) lives as a man - personally, I think they do so out of social obligation and want to live as a woman - it’s their dying wish to be recognised as Karren, not Kanae, in their final moments with Shuu.

→Rikai, unlike Yusa and Shio, is never assigned a gender in their character profile. I think they’re the only character in the story whose gender is never specified?→Tsukiyama is blatantly in love with Kaneki - again, his sexuality is (frustratingly) never really confirmed in canon but I think you’d be hard pressed to find anyone who believes his feelings are platonic. That love is completely warped and deviant through Shuu’s whole goal of consuming Kaneki; negatively coded.

→Nico, I’ve talked about before - I had always read Nico as non-binary but people who are more familiar with LGBT+ culture in Japan suggested otherwise; that he’s a fairly accurate representation of many gay Japanese men, so I’ll defer to that reading since mine was very Eurocentric! Either way, his gender and appearance are also running gags, and his interest in men is super creepy and predatory (especially wrt Ayato).

→Yamori? A lot of people of people don’t consider Yamori to be LGBT+ but I’ve always read him as gay. I think his relationship with Nico was probably sexual but, even if it wasn’t, Nico is definitely presented as sexually gratified by Yamori’s abuse.

→Urie is implied to have romantic feelings towards Mutsuki. I feel like there’s a lot of queer baiting with Urie in particular; to offer so many hints about his feelings and not follow through with them was really... eh.

→Hsiao is also strongly implied to be romantically interested in other women - Saiko.

→Matsuri is gay; he has no interest whatsoever in his wife, and he’s very open about his feelings towards Urie. He’s also a lot older than Urie, which I find pretty dodgy, and he’s super creepy and predatory towards him.

→Yomo... is maybe bi/pan? He tells Nico he likes women in an omake but his internal thoughts when he’s talking to Touka in the same omake suggest he’s open to men too. I don’t think his relationship with Uta is purely platonic and I was frustrated by the end of the manga that it wasn’t explored properly, although I never really expected it to be anyway.

→Uta tells Urie that girls are cute and also that Urie is sexy - he’s presumably bi/pan. Again with the Yomo/Uta queerbaiting, it’s predominantly Uta whose written as having a lot of Big Gay Feelings so to not have those explicitly explored is... womp womp. From subtext, he’s similar to Tsukiyama in that, if romantic feelings do exist, they’re totally corrupted and scary and fucked up. 

Obviously there’s a little more nuance but, yeah, I think a lot of harmful stereotypes are reinforced and, where there is potential for honest and interesting discussions, Ishida trails off and doesn’t commit to representing them.

Notes on Gender, Ethnicity, and Culture

At the heart of the etoneki conflict/drama is nothing more than culture clash.

Eto may be amazing at studying others and have replicated humanity well enough to be a respected author among humans without anyone finding any clues to her ghoul nature, not even Haise in RE: - but she is still someone who was raised by ghouls. Her base nature is as a ghoul, from the 24th ward specifically. Naturally, there’s going to be some confusion between her and Kaneki, who was raised by humans.

But that leaves the good good question of what those differences should be. Clearly, some should be tiny, but there NEED to be huge misunderstandings bc I live for that kind of drama. Also, it’s a slowburn, so. that’s how it is.

this is long, and tagged for spoilers for a good reason. nothing specific, but if u like being surprised by the plot in ur grapefruit, go no further as of chapter 5

1) Ghouls have ABO while humans do not. Sure, there was a decently long time where Kaneki lived among ghouls, but can u picture early chapter Touka willingly sitting him down and giving the birds and the bees and the grasshoppers and also the spiders Talk? I think not. Maybe Kouma? Itori would. Like, they’d both kill him dead with it, but they would. And knowing the contexts within another culture doesn’t mean that you have assimilated those words/concepts to your own yourself, or that you actually know every single social detail, especially as it applies to others.

...but Eto does. And human gender/sexuality is fairly simple on the whole, except when it isn’t, so she has a leg up on him there.

plus, the way I have the ABO structured, it makes a bit more sense for him to be less aware of it, since his gender, as perceived by ghouls, is the most privileged one. Especially since its associated with deliberate power gain, which he totally played into during the later half of the first TG, so it would be a natural assumption for ghouls to make that he understood that he was acting exactly as his gender is socially expected to. and in a way that would socially cement his powerful omega status.

Tsukiyama would totally say something about it, since with the whole affluent family thing he’d probably be very aware of gender and social dynamics, but anything shuu says can be followed by “and he called me a cabbage in French last week, so okay shuu, whatever poetics ‘omega’ means to u, go ahead, have your fun buddy.” Banjou, who was involved with Rize, would be too worried about offending him or making it embarrassing to say anything. and as a ghoul even lower than shuu, he’d be super conservative about getting up in an omega’s business. It would just be this ambiguous open secret that everyone but Kaneki is totally, painfully aware of. the gasmask trio find this hilarious. Hina is a wee bab whose parent was a doctor for ghouls, so she just accepts her big bro as is.

so there’s eto’s expectations to be basically an underling to someone powerful as a normal, comfortable relationship dynamic, pitted against kaneki’s human-embedded inclination toward monogamy and not something that feels like weird bdsm domination stuff. they each are expecting a certain treatment from one another, and not getting it. eto feels neglected, since he isn’t all in her business and allowing her to settle in the shadow of his power and just ride things out, and kaneki, with only human expectations for sex, gender, and whatever the hell just happened, expects the worst from her as the “““male”““ in the relationship who manipulated him.

the conflict is that neither happens.

all of the power is on his side of the court, but in human terms, it feels like the opposite - vis a vis, human misogyny and all the horrible expectations for a sex and reproduction based marriage system that go along with that.

which is why i’ve inverted all that to make myself feel better :)

2) i kicked knots out bc idk about that business, but there have to be other physical differences. there have to be, or its boring. and then again, since both are hybrids, what should either have?

i’ve decided eto will have all physical differences or a learned equivalent due to ghoul socialization, while kaneki should have none but whatever was forced on him through his kakuhou - ie, pheromone stuff, but nothing more.

ghouls can purr, bc i am weak to that shit. Kaneki is aware of this. it’s just a Thing that they do. he’s read to Hina and she’s fallen asleep purring before and it was adorable. irimi purrs very quietly when she cleans things. uta is a purr machine when he makes masks, and it knocks yomo out unless he’s drunk, then he just purrs like a truck engine from the floor near uta’s desk for three hours. touka hasn’t purred since ayato left

eto purrs when she’s satisfied with her writing flow, which is one of the main reasons she prefers to work alone in her apartment and keep shiono out. otherwise, she doesn’t mind company. she also purrs when happy, like most ghouls. kaneki does not. i can site Haise’s RC scan on this: since he never took damage to the throat, he never had a chance to heal ‘more ghoul’ in that area.

so the exchange of a happy eto, deeply content with their uneasy peace, purring to express such delight, meets a blank wall that doesn’t agree. her social expression of happiness clashes up against kaneki only maybe leaning toward physical affection and being quiet. he can understand that she is happy, and she can understand that he can’t respond in the same way, but the dynamics of their relationship make her doubt her actions and get instinctually afraid of doing something wrong and upsetting someone much more powerful than her who also decides if she is allowed to reproduce with him or not. and stops purring and gets unsettled. kaneki is only confused and maybe she doesn’t like being touched? time to touch less. oh no, she did do Something Wrong and now omega is mad at her!! interpersonal drama escalates on both sides >:3c

ghouls have great night vision. kaneki also does and you know why. youve read the series. full ghouls have tapetum lucidum in both eyes, but eto only has it in her single ghoul eye. her vision is unbalanced in the dark but due to her learning to compensate for the slight reduction in light capture on one side she gets by just fine. it also parallels nicely with arima’s poor eyesight and learning to compensate for it.

ghouls are crepuscular while humans are diurnal, but this doesn’t matter since neither of etoneki know what a sleep schedule is. and the 24th ward doesn’t experience day/night cycles, so they have their own issues with sleeping when safe, do not sleep when not safe.

ghouls tend toward pack structure, but not in a rigid way where there can only be one omega/powerful ghoul per unit. as long as everybody gets along personally, its fine. omega don’t see each other as competition. alpha toss themselves at their feet without prompting. they’re not a scarce resource. alpha don’t even really fight over omega unless completely affected by heat and rut cycles and unable to grasp the concept of maybe next time. but even that is rare, mostly only those who are jealous as a person attempt this. if alpha fight over an omega and one wins, the omega might just kill them for taking away some of their prospects, or might be impressed by the show of strength. or annoyed by it, bc they want weak underlings. depends on the person. (eto is more than a bit possessive, at least for his first heat.)

more on this point as i think of it.

3)  I haven’t specified kaneki’s personal gender identity for a reason. that reason is that i’m not sure what direction i want to go. this is strictly for maman, not Sugar, which is trans girl Sasako forever. for this piece of feti/sh garbage? whom knows! (I know. and until word of god says otherwise - i’m god - every character is trans.)

but really, there’s options. and i love them all.

A) kaneki was trans all along. hide is best bi bud. aunt was a bitch, but nothing worse than canon since he was closeted at the time, although he doubly prepared to never speak to her again. (true neutral)

B) woke up a ghoul and with new parts. why believe a species change but not a sex change, eh? heightens the early game confusion and search for id as a person whose major ids have changed against his will. (lawful neutral)

C) gradual transformation. like how he came into his strength as a ghoul slowly. read a doujin like this once. was okay. quality art, big titties, 8/10. ngl would read the sequel. (Perhaps I am writing the sequel? aren’t we all just chasing our Brands across the lonely internet, hopping from one computer virus to the next? maybe u die reading hentai, or u live long enough to see urself post to ao3.) (chaotic neutral)

D) heals himself a new set of parts due to intense damage. see the haise RC chart, which has a ton of pathways around the hips/torso area. parallels with cutting eto in half?? (also lawful neutral)

E) started happening as a transformation when eto’s pheromones triggered his heat cycle for the first time. boy would he be pissed at her X2 lmao (lawful evil)

F) transformation during #240 time due to losing all memory and only having instinct to structure his body with, and just enough RC pathways to make a hormone based transformation possible. Chiba would have had a field day, but also would have torn out his horrible bowl cut in confusion. get rekt bud. not even #240 knows wtf goin on (neutral evil)

G) maybe he just wanted a vag! thought about that?? learns he is supposed to be able to manipulate his flesh like his kagune, which he is canonically great at, and just Goes For It. it works. he is a strong, dependent idiot who don’t need no dick. (iconic)

H) same as above, but that’s just what Haise does when he has the reigns. looks deep into his pastless self and asks ‘do i have to put up with this cis nonsense? not today.’ (chaotic iconic)

I) it happens suddenly when he activates his kakuja for the first time. queer the monster transformation u wish to see in the world. just. so confused. but also there’s Guilt to be felt about banjou and amon and such, so that’s back burner. (chaotic evil)

okay, so in like fifteen minutes i was able to name 9 perfect opportunities for ishida to carry though the motif of 1)iding with female ghouls 2)paralleling with canon trans man mutsuki 3)litcherally having a female ghoul organ donation fiasco 4)being associated with vacillating between masculine yang and feminine yin black/white 5)having a narrative that revolved around accepting his body and learning to find his own strength and id that is different than what he was born with - but coward ishida stopped sixty miles short of the mark. fool. I Cannot Feast Upon Crumbs, Sir. Sir, You Have Given Me Airplane Peanuts For Supper. Sir, I Am Starving And Antagonistic At Best.

(i shouldn’t call him a coward. three huge series magically having the same Wife And Kids ending all during the time shinzou abe is in office? probably not a coincidence. hope they got a good payout for it. i’d sell out for that $$$ too tbh)

eto is just an alpha. her human social id is a Normal Human Female Who Is Totally Cis and Straight for maximum social acceptance and ease of integration, but that’s only her mask. her personal id is an alpha, which is cis by ghoul standards, and she uses she/her pronouns bc she feels like it. she has the power to id as above alpha, but she enjoys the social invisibility it gives her, since she can blend in the background whereever and noone looks at her presumably weak ass twice. like chie, but for nefarious purposes.

....does that make her the equivalent of a ghoul feminist? i’m getting Too Deep

4) the wards can be isolated and far apart, and its been explored in canon with the Three Blades family and the white suites - congrats u 2 - and ghoul organizations that have a home ward having distinct cultural differences from one another. small ethnic groups and isolated diaspora? natives? subset?? of whatever the 24th ward ghouls - sorry, tokyo humans - are.

this sort of thing is only tangentially related to kaneki. if someone with a texas accent teaches someone to speak english, that person will have that accent, whether they’v ever been to texas or not. so he has some of the social mannerisms of a 20th ward ghoul, but generally still has a lot of ingrained human attributes to confuse them.

5) i’m still fascinated by the half finished thought about there are just some ghouls who become binge eaters in canon. like Rize wasn’t special for it. I think shinohara mentioned this?? but. it makes sense. general food insecurity, lack of permanent social support, total oppression, absurd power levels, plenty of humans to take it out on...ye.

and kaneki has the kakuhou of an adult binge eater. there’s cool hints of the kakuhou being parasitic, so a mature one would def fall into the biological fulfillment of binge eating for strength and carry that genetic knowledge into a new host. and from there, it would induce cravings, serotonin reward systems, and all that good stuff to get what its come to like.... like, mayhaps, a cordycepts? ;)

well, i’ve put ‘binge eater’ down as just a general omega trait, since it feels authentic to do so, so we’ll see what i do with this in the future. i will also see, since i too am ignorant of my own self. what will my horny subconscious do next? i am usually the last to know.

I'd like to talk about how much I love Uta's character, particularly design wise. You can really tell Ishida was having fun when he designed Uta since he's the most distinct looking character in the series and often has wild fashion in sketches and omake. I love his birthday sketch where Ishida drew him with lipstick in a kimono and a fox mask. He's an ambiguously bi fashion icon.

yeah! uta’s character design is very important to me, because the way ishida portrayed him really reminds me of my favourite japanese subculture, visual kei!! i’ve been an avid fan and participant of this musical and aesthetic movement since my early teens, and it’s really nice to see it reflected in a mainstream manga and catching people’s eyes! i actually draw uta the most, because i just love his visual design, and it’s always fun (but really difficult) to come up with outfits for him, haha. luckily i have 9 years of experience in this movement to draw upon …

i feel like a lot of other characters have distinct looks in the series as well (like juuzou!!), but you’re right, uta is especially eclectic, haha. the flashy outfits, androgynous appearance, piercings + tattoos, occasional makeup, and fusion of gothic and traditional japanese fashion suit him really well & also exemplify visual kei, imo. the visual aesthetics of the genre aim to surprise people through the beauty of unusual, ambiguous, unsettling, exotic, and sometimes taboo topics. the famous journalist and editor who coined this term, hoshiko seiichi, originally called it ‘visual-shock kei’ (visual shock style/genre); and i think that term fits uta’s style pretty well, haha.

since uta’s taste is described as ‘ill yet masterful’ and ‘exotic’, i think he definitely falls into this genre (whether or not ishida intended it or not … though i feel like he did, considering how infamous this subculture is in japan, and the fact that ishida has drawn things for a very famous visual kei musician, miyavi). the way he attires/chooses to present himself are quite shocking to other people, but suit him in a way that’s almost disturbing – the permanent kakugan, very visible piercings and tattoos (which are still looked down upon in japanese society, sadly), unusual/odd clothing (even if it is somewhat understated at times). it draws your eyes to him no matter what else is happening in the scene (well, except for his more drab coats in the recent chapters … is he trying to emulate yomo?)

i have noticed that his fashion sense is sort of shifting around in tg:re, and i’ve been meaning to look at it more closely to see if ishida is dropping hints about uta’s mental state/thoughts through his clothing. uta definitely chooses his clothes carefully, and is self-conscious of how he looks … if he weren’t, he wouldn’t have wanted to kill yomo for saying that his sunglasses looked ‘weird’. i wonder what clues ishida would have left us there …

i really do like that birthday illustration! as a matter of fact it is my mobile header! it looks like he’s headed towards a festival, because he’s wearing a casual yukata and has a mask …  his outfit in this illustration definitely reminds me of the visual style of one of my favourite bands, kagrra,!
