Slashers x S/O in a LDR
A/n- Oh, anon! Same hat! Same hat! I’ve considered making something like this a few times, I was so happy to finally make them!! :D
I’m currently working on stuff for Randy Meeks, Kurt Kunkle, and Lester Sinclair- but if there’s still a character you wanted but don’t see here? Feel free to let me know, and I’d be glad to whip something up for them, as well!
Characters: Billy/Stu and Norman Bates
T/W: mostly fluff with a side of abandonment and mommy issues. and some swearing? (is damn a swear word? I used it a lot)
Billy Loomis & Stu Macher
Word  Count: 992
Y’all met in high school- the three of you practically inseparable. But then college happens- and you would’ve loved to stay with Billy and Stu, but the sort of situation arises where you can’t possibly turn away the opportunity. It would be such a mistake, especially for the line of work you’d like to be in.
And now you may be thinking, Stu’s family is rich rich, right? Couldn’t they just,, buy they’re way in, so you didn’t have to part? Well...I guess they could? These boys aren’t afraid to take what they want, no matter what that entails- but I feel like there might be a lost sense of pride buying their way in.
...plus...they may or may have not tried...and the school definitely did not accept that shit.
So with that, the three of you end up at different colleges- well, Billy and Stu are at the same place but...you’re so far away 🥺🥺
You’re still in California- but you’re far enough away that they can’t do one to two day trips to see you. It still hurts so much to be apart from them though- especially since both of these boys are so, hmm how to put it...they’re very affectionate and needy (while that last bit may be more so Stu, Billy still fits the Bill on that one).
You only visit each other on holidays and during the summer- and you always stay much longer for the summer.
When Stu sees you again, the first thing he does is wrap you in the biggest, almost suffocating hug- Billy trailing close behind him, laughing at his antics. He basically holds on to you for the entire ride from the airport back to the house (depending on who’s visiting who- but you’ll often come back to Woodsboro, and stay with Stu).
They think about you all the time when you’re gone. It’s kind of nuts. They’ve got so many other things going on in their lives- they’re still participating in Ghostface murders, they’ve got college and Real jobs ((Stu doesn’t even need a job, but he likes staying close with Billy and having something to do !! He doesn’t like staying by himself too much :(  )) and even with all that? You still end up worming your way into their brains. Collective brainrot over you lmao /j
You call each other everyday- or every other day if schedules are tight. The good thing is...is y’all are both in Cali !! There are no stupid time zones, y’all don’t gotta worry about that >:(
They want to make sure they know everything that’s been going on with you- even if it’s some boring class, it’s totally worth it just to hear you talk.
There’s lot of them telling you all the things they want to do to/with you when they finally see you. It’s all about the heavy yearning folks. The ache that you feel when you realize you can’t do that right now. And not for a long time.
You just want to stay with your boys, cuddled on the couch, watching B-rated slasher films. You want to look them in their pretty, perfect eyes, and let your fears and worries melt away, while you tell them how much you love and missed them. And to finally feel your boys’ hairs through your fingers again.
And the crashing, sudden realization, after they drop you off at the airport- and you have your drawn out, tearful goodbyes...the kind you see in movies- that you won’t see them again. Not like that, at least. And not for months. It was back to counting down the days again. Being thankful for every little moment you had with them- and every call, and every weird text message they sent. Allowing every soft, intimate moment away from each other to guide you back home.
Billy’s not great at dealing with his emotions...especially in positive ways. The relationship can definitely be super hard on him, even if he doesn’t really show it. It brings up a lot of his abandonment issues with his mom :( Having you go off to college is losing part of his support system, and it physically pains him to not see you in Woodsboro. You’re part of his little found family with him and Stu. And when you’re not there? Sometimes it feels like he’s lost you. that you’re not coming back from school, and you’re going to have left for good. Which is not true at all, and he knows that...but god damn is it hard to not listen to that dark, nagging voice sometimes.
And for Stu? He doesn’t mind as much. He doesn’t share this same trauma involved with it that Billy seems to have. But it still hits him in all the wrong places. He’s more likely to show his true emotions than Billy. And that’s actually really good !! He’s able to properly communicate with you whats going, where he’s at with things.
It can be kind of exhausting trying to translate Billy’s feelings to you- for all parties involved. Or Billy, who’s learned a certain way to communicate that works, and then having to find a new way that makes sense over text and phone calls. Since you can’t see all his body language, and the way he tenses up when he’s filled with Big Emotions.
TLDR; dealing w/ emotions is tough, doing it via limited technology is harder :(
and y’all know it’s tough on each other- but like hell you’re not gonna make it work with each other. Y’all are meant to be, even if the relationship is in a bit of an odd spot right now.
You always have to remind the boys that this is only temporary. just until your 4+ years of schooling is over, and then you can move back to Woodsboro. Then you’ll have all the time in the world to plan your lives together.
Norman Bates
Word Count: 784
You meet Norman at his motel. You’re just passing through, on your way to a gathering with some of your family. He’s a little odd, but such a gentleman, that you make a note to stay at his motel on the way back home, as well.
Norman’s completely enamored by you, and you say “I’ll see you soon” that first time, he can nearly feel his heart skip a beat. He’s a smiling, happy little mess about it. You wanted to come back here, for him? He can’t wait for it.
Part of him was worried you wouldn’t come back, and that part of him was very scared- but you were so genuine, he could tell you’d be back. For real.
He still finds himself surprised, when a few days later you’re back there. When you leave, you give him your home phone number and address. Letting him know if he was ever going through your town, and he needed a place to stay that...well...he was always welcome at yours.
Y’all aren’t even dating at this point, but you definitely felt this spark- this connection- when you met. It was unlike anything the two of you had ever felt before. So...your relationship starts off slow. It builds overtime.
It had been a few weeks since you met- with Norman’s work at the motel and whatever work you do, it was hard to find time between it all- but you’re finally able to start weekly phone calls with each other. Catching up with each other, asking him about the motel, and his hobbies...he’s so thrilled when you talk to him about the taxidermy! Not many folks are very er...into it. So it’s a nice surprise for him that the person he likes...cares about what he likes.
Further into y’all’s relationship, the weekly calls will turn into twice a week and sometimes and slowly, slowly melt into sending letters with each other as much as you can. Every few weeks or so, you’d get the sweet pleasure of seeing Norman’s simple letter in your mailbox. Smiling as you spot your name in his nice, neat handwriting.
Often you’ll include clippings from articles or magazines that reminded you of him, and little photos of yourself, your family (and pets if you have any) and critters, and bugs and shots of nature. He loves the ones you send of birds and trees the most- but he keeps every single one you send him. He has a whole drawer full of your letters.
A while into exchanging letters, the two of you begin signing off every one with an “I love you”. It’s not until you see each other in person again that you fully realize your feelings. I mean, they were always there- but it took the pair of you an impossibly long to speak it out loud- to make it official.
It had been just under a year since you met- and you’re finally back at the Bates motel. There’s no special reason, you’re not seeing family, per se. But you’re starting something you should have started ages ago. Every part of your being is teeming with nervous excitement- what if you had read the letters all wrong? Every I love you, meant as friends?
You're quick to let him know of your arrival- he’s surprised, he didn’t expect you and you wrap each other in a large hug. You don’t let go for sometime, and when you finally do, you still clutch on to his smooth, slender hands. You lean into him, “I’ve missed you.” He looks at you with soft, shiny eyes, lost in your own. You press a subtle kiss to his lips, and pull away soon after. You feel your face get hot, and you can only imagine that Norman’s face would be bright pink.
He doesn’t say anything at first, simply squeezing your hands. “I did, too,” he smiles. It’s so delicate, and you can’t help but hold his face in your hands- studying every little detail. Of course, he sent you photos of himself from time to time- but it wasn’t the same.
The week that you spend with him is magical. When you leave you already find yourself missing the time you had with him- but you suppose that feeling and the wait to see Norman- was worth it. Plus, you still had the phone calls and all the letters with I Love You in them. Besides, with time, you’d be back at his motel- or he’d finally take you up on your offer, and you could finally spend a sunny morning, lazing around cuddled with each other in your bed, in your town.

Hey, y’all! Stories Update!!
Hey, y’all. So, I know I haven’t exactly been posting much on here lately. I’ve, in a way, taken a small break from writing my Negan/JDM stories for a bit. But, that doesn’t mean that I’ve stopped writing. In fact, it’s quite the opposite! I just wanted to let y’all know that I haven’t stopped writing. In fact, I’ve been working on stories with @mychemicalimagines and @supernaturalwritingbunker. I decided I would let you know what they were, in case y’all wanted to go check ‘em out! If you love my Negan writing, feel free to check out these other stories I’ve worked on/been working on! They’re listed in alphabetical order, based on the first name then by the first name of the fic, unless otherwise stated (i.e. the Jasper Hale “You’re My…” Series). Stories we haven’t posted yet don’t have links, but everything else does. I’m hoping that I’ll get some more inspiration to keep writing for Negan here soon. We’ll see! Stay safe. Stay negative of Corona. Have fun! And as always, feel free to reach out and talk. I’m here. I just might not always reply back right away.
*For the stories listed below, I’ve separated based on which blog it’s from, and whether it’s a movie or show fic. Beyond that. I’ve separated them based on which show or movie it is, and if applicable, I’ve indicated if it’s a series or not. I’ve included the title of the story, what it’s status is (finished, in progress, or on hiatus), how many chapters there are, and the relationship pairings. If it’s on hiatus, the main reason for that, unless otherwise indicated, is that we just aren’t quite ready to finish that particular story. It’s like having a kid, watching it grow, and then them being all grown up. You wanna hold onto that innocence for as long as you can. XD Another reason that they might be on hiatus is we just haven’t had any mojo for writing it. Now, for the “in progress” stories, we are still writing those, but, some haven’t been updated in awhile because they aren’t getting enough love for us to want to continue. If you read one of them, and decide you love it, please leave feedback so we can continue it for you!

Cash Prize
Part 4    Michael Meyers x Reader
By: @pusantheamazonian
Welp we're almost done. So let's kick this relationship up a notch.
Part 1  Part 2 Part 3
Tumblr media
Waking up to warmth, you're wrapped like a burrito. Tangled in blankets with his arms locked around you. His arms?
Peering up, you're still in bed atop of Michael. The mask is back on and he is awake. At least he's in the clothes you bought him. That's a plus.
"Morning."
A hand pats your head. Before he starts to move.
"Mmm you're so warm this morning." Holding on to whatever you can of him. Burying your face in his chest, hoping he gets the message that you want to snuggle some more. Ignoring your demands. He sits straight up and you have to roll off to the side so you don't get smooshed.
"Okay okay. I'm getting up." Struggling with the blankets you know he's done. How tight did he wrap these blankets?
After breakfast you cozy up on the couch with a blanket in your usual spot and wait for Michael to join you. So you can steal all his body heat. Something is off though. He's usually melted to the couch before you. But right now he's just looming over you.
"What?"
A curious head tilt and several minutes of staring. He holds out the flyer you gave him.
"You kept this?" Surprised that he kept it, a smile creeps into your face. It’s strangely sweet that he kept something from your first meeting.
The poke to your forehead brings you back to reality. The persistence he has about this is strange. He's definitely using his size against you. Good old intimidation tactic. Staring at the fyler you start thinking about why he's kept this. There's something he must want to know.
“Why? Why did I come to you?” There's a slight nod. “I was in a car accident. I had broken ribs, a bunch of bruises and my car, well you've seen it. But I was off work for a month because they thought I had done more damage than broken ribs, then I could only work part time for three weeks. Bills were pulling up quickly and my insurance didn't cover everything. That's why I needed the money. So I thought what the hell I got nothing to lose.” Shrugging you give him a weak smile. It's sort of embarrassing now when you say it out loud. That your last resort was asking The Shape of Haddonfield for help with your money problems. That you reached a point, where dying would be financially easier.
Taking the flyer back he now hands you the picture from last night. Honestly you're surprised it took him this long to rifle through your things. This is something you don't really want to talk about but you know he's not going to leave it alone.
"You want to know about my family." Sighing you can only stare at it. It's the last picture you have of everyone together. A candid photo from a neighbor's birthday party. Your parents dressed in matching colors, little brother trying to shove a whole cupcake into his mouth and you trying to hide from the camera. You regret doing that now.
Under his stare he watches you zone out. Your breathing becomes erratic and you're squeezing the picture. Seems like you're trying to hold back a nervous breakdown. He saw the same behaviors at the sanitarium. More extreme but still the same behaviors. Petting your hair is the only thing he knows for sure clams you.
"You sure are nosey today." Whispering, the soothing touch of his hand calms you. So focused on the picture you forgot about him and what he was asking. "Carbon monoxide poisoning. It was during my first semester of college. I got a call from the police saying they died in their sleep and I needed to come down to the morgue to identify their bodies." Looking away you hand it back to him. "I never enrolled for a second semester. I know it was a stupid move on my part. But I was not in the right mental state to do anything."
Interesting. You're more damaged than he originally thought. Loomis would have a field day with you. The annoying bastard.
When he finally sits down, you watch him slowly scan the room. Honestly it's slightly creepy.
"I sold everything. It's either here or in the storage locker. If that's what you are wondering."
Answering him, you can see the wheels turning in his brain as he stares at you. Man, it's uncomfortable when he stares like that.
"Well…. This has been a talkative morning. I'm going to go make some cookies." Patting his knee you are determined to leave this conversation. Freeze at his sudden grip on your wrist, you clarify yourself.. "Chocolate chip cookies. So I can put some icing in-between two of them and make a sandwich." Pretending to eat a sandwich, you can feel it. It's going to be one of those days. He's definitely not leaving you alone today.
You are moving too slowly for him. You said that it would only be a minute but it's been over a minute. Grabbing the container, he holds it above your head. Pulling the mask up just enough, he starts eating.
"Michael! If you eat them all we won't have any for later!" Jumping you don't come close to the container. If you don't get that container back there won't be any left for you.
Okay, Plan B.
Keeping eye contact, you back into the corner and slide the step stool closer. It's times like this your regret only having a one step, step stool. He knows what you're up to. You swear you see a smirk as he raises his arm higher.
Yup. It's a fact. You've discovered that Michael has a sweet tooth for cookies. Which would explain where all the Oreos have been disappearing to.
"Now you're just acting like the Cookie Monster." Pouting you start jumping again. This time on the step stool, hoping it will give you the advantage you need.
You are too easy to mess with. He watches you unsafely and recklessly jump on a moveable plastic stool. As much as he hates to admit it. He did enjoy feeling your soft body pressed to his. Timing it just right, he kicks the stool out from underneath you. Making you fall face first into him. Immediately locking you in place with his free arm.
"I get it. No more jumping on the step stool." Mumbling you try to wiggle out of his grasp. Damn his super strength. In defeat you lean all your weight on him and stop struggling. Only after proving that you weren't going to resist. Did he lose his grip on you, allowing you to shift so you can see him better.
You don't know how much time passed before he let go but an eternity could pass by and you wouldn't care. As long as you were able to stare into Michael's eyes. The swirling blue void that was always trying to say something but never able.
Damn.
~
You have been planning this all week. Good Lord was it hard with your professional stalker here. At least you were able to put the locker at work to good use. There was no way you would be able to hide his presents at the apartment.
With him glued to the TV already it's the perfect distraction. Pulling the presents out of your work bag. You hide them behind your back and slowly walk to him. Making him acknowledge your weird behavior as you stand in the way of the TV.
"So this may be weird." You hold up two small packages. "Happy Birthday."
You don't know what's more distressing. The confusion or the empty sadness in his eyes. The flickering of his eyes to the presents and the wall calendar have you regretting this idea.
"Today's October 19th, your birthday and I thought we could celebrate it." It never occurred to you that he may not like celebrating his birthday. He has been locked away for years. Do they celebrate birthdays or holidays at Smith's Grove? "If you want to." Sheepishly you hope he does, even if it's just opening the presents.
Birthday? It's his birthday? How did you know that? He barely remembers when it is and you want to celebrate it? He hasn't celebrated it since he was little. The sanitarium did little for celebrations. Yet you want to, you even have presents for him.
His hands move faster than his brain. As an out of body experience, watching himself take the presents from you. Placing both items in his lap as you join him on the couch with a smile.
Opening the first present he doesn't know what to expect. Knowing you it could be anything.  Intrigued he lifts up the set of chef knives. Each one has a different brightly colored handle. This is an odd gift.
"I thought that the splash of color might confuse potential….victims more. It also comes with a sharpener." You struggle for a moment with what word to use but you powered on through it. He'll understand what you mean.
The second present is the one you're the most proud of. It's hard to contain your excitement while he opens it. It took you several days to find the perfect scarf. When you saw it you knew it was the one. A 60x10 inch wool scarf almost the exact same color as his coveralls.
"I know you're a body heater but it's getting colder out. I don't want you to get sick."
Amazing, you found a scarf that's the same blue as his coveralls. The softness is unreal and since when do scarfs come with embroidery?
MM.
Thumbing the white letters, it's easy to see that the letters have been handsewn on. This was an addition. When did you have time to do all this?
"I personalized it by adding your initials to it." Blushing you look away. You don't know why this is embarrassing. All you did was get him something practical and fun for his birthday.
"So if you're not opposed. I was thinking we could do a cake or cupcakes for later. And you can pick the flavor, I have vanilla and chocolate cake mix."
Quietly you watch him mull the options over. Watching his head slowly tilt back and forth. Apparently this is a fucking hard decision. You've known since you were five years old what kind of cake you want for your birthday. His head tilting stops and gives you a look. Just something about it tells you he decided on chocolate.
"A chocolate… a chocolate what? Cake?" Pulling your own questions out of the air. He perks up a little at cake. "Okie dokie then. Tonight we're having chocolate cake." Smiling and out of an old old habit, you lean over and kiss his temple before getting off the couch. "I better not have paper wads thrown at me while I'm baking." Warning him you try to look menacing as you head for the kitchen. Making a mental note that his mask needs a good cleaning.
What. What was that? Presents? A kiss? Celebrate his birthday with good intentions? It feels like time has frozen again but is spinning out of control. The lack of control has dulled his thinking and made it seem like he was a normal person. Like a normal man with a normal girlfriend. How can you simply do that to him? The voices are irrational in their yelling. Demanding blood, your blood. Eradicating any reason to come back. You're fragile anyways, a simple snap of the neck would suffice. If he did that he would be left to the wild again. Regrettably he has come accustomed to this life with you. Food is easier to find, dry rooms that don't threaten to give out, watching TV to pass the time.
Before he realizes it he's standing behind you. Watching you pull various items out of the cabinets. What are you? Are you a nuisance or asset? A waste of his time and efforts or his prized possession? He thought he had your place in his life figured out. This confusion must end. The voices or his sanity.
The almost invisible touch on your neck, pushing your hair to the side. Shivering, you quickly turn around in panic.
"Oh it's just you." Sighing in relief you turn back to the counter. It's just Michael being weird. "You surprised me. I thought there was a creeper inside the apartment."
Before you can continue there's a slow drag of Michael's hands. Wrapping themselves around your middle. Taking a ragged breath, you closely watch where his hands are going.
"Um… Michael? Are you going to let go?" Confused, you wait for him to move. His response is to squeeze tighter, pulling you closer to him. “I was about to start your birthday cake.” Looking at him not only do you see but can feel his burning stare. The cake is not happening right now. He wants all of your attention and he wants it now.
“If you're not going to let me go. Why don’t we sit down."
Sitting sideways in his lap, you lean on his chest. This isn’t awkward at all. Wrapping an arm around his, you quietly listen to his heartbeat. His chin rests on top of your head. Strange you would have never expected him to be a cuddler. But everyone likes to cuddle at some point. Besides it's been awhile since you have been held like this.
It's easy to fall asleep like this. His iron grip makes you feel safe. Knowing he has your back and likes you to a point. Is what makes you feel safe. But like all things perfection never lasts. You need to rotate or move because your leg is going numb. But with Michael's iron grip, that's easier said than done. Fidgeting you try to relieve the pressure without bothering him.
"Michael…." Freezing you don't move, holding your breath in case you're wrong.
That's not a knife in his pocket.
May the Lord help you. You are suddenly very aware of how much smaller and weaker you are compared to him. You're not going to say a word. Just ignore the entire situation. You are completely nopeing out of conscious acceptance of his boner. Maybe he doesn't realize exactly what is going on. He's been without human interaction for a long time, this is just a normal reaction. Maybe he's not interested in physical interactions and is asexual. It did take him a long time to show you his face and today is about birthday celebrations. But aren't you two together now? This relationship isn't exactly defined but wouldn't physical intimacy be the next step? It's not like you want any one else and you know any other suitor would be dead by nightfall. God your thought process is spiraling.
As if reading your mind his grip tightens. Curling himself around you. His erection nudges your thigh as he slowly grinds against you. Squeezing his arm in surprise. It's a very sobering fact that Michael is now taking control of his birthday plans.
"Uh… Michael? I-is there… I mean d-do you want me to help?" You're a stuttering mess. Blushing you can't believe that you just asked him if he wants you to take care of his erection. You can barely hold eye contact with him. There's a burning curiosity and darkness in his eyes. Gulping, you have no idea the chaos you just unleashed. But you're pretty sure you just opened Pandora's box.

Rob Zombie; "Why it's time to step outside the confinements of his own box."
For close to four decades,
Rob Zombie has brought nonstop psychedelic grooves and a rockstar presence while gracing his own music and the silver screen with gut-churning, drug-tripping visuals. He not only commands quite the presence in films (whether his own successes or others’), but also makes appearances within many other horror soundtracks. There’s no denying that Zombie is a bloodied savant who has stayed incredibly consistent.

(Side note; tumblr’s photo formatting is a pain)
Let’s take a dive into his music before getting into his film library. From 1985-1997, White Zombie released six albums (between studio and compilations). La Sexorcisto: Devil Music Volume One didn’t break into the Billboard 200 chart until a year after its 1992 release. Shortly thereafter, it became the hot and groovy bong success of the band, going on to sell two million copies. Astro Creep 2000, their final and fourth studio release, was their first and only album to chart within the Top 10 of the Billboard 200 in 1995. Up to this day in 2020, “White Zombie” has been featured in 47 TV, film, and video game soundtracks, from Beavis & Butthead to Pen15 to Bride Of Chucky (which includes a personal favorite moment of mine), amongst many others.
After the disbandment and separation, Zombie continued on his solo journey. He has gone on to release six studio albums, with a seventh on the way in March 2021, titled The Lunar Injection Kool Aid Eclipse Conspiracy. A multitude of hits—eight to be exact—sat within the Top 10 of the Billboard 200 records.
══════════════════
Zombie’s extensive film career is a “Super Beast” on its own.
He has been very vocal about gaining inspiration from 1920s-1980s horror culture. In many interviews, he’s cited Stan Lee, Bella Lugosi, Alice Cooper, and Steven Speilberg as being responsible for molding the brain that we know today.
Some of his influences include:
George A. Romero’s Dawn of the Dead (1978)
A Clockwork Orange (1971)
Texas Chainsaw Massacre (1974)
The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari (1920)
The Shining (1980)
Zombie’s upbringing in the carnival industry alongside his family is another key influence.
[[I’ll only be focusing on Zombie’s live-action films here.]]
══════════════════
In 2000, Rob made his directorial and (very memorable) screen debut with House Of 1000 Corpses.
It took three years to be released because of quarrels with major production companies regarding the film’s majorly aggressive themes of torture, blood, violence, sex—not to mention his arrogance with MGM, fighting to get rights back from Universal. Eventually, Lionsgate bit the bullet, albeit with the major stipulation of having Rob edit it down much further so House could pass with a “tame” R rating.

══════════════════
In 2005 and 2019, the franchise’s next two installments—Devil’s Rejects and 3 From Hell—were released. The franchise is heavily influenced by the shocking, sickening, and unforgettable ’70s classic Texas Chainsaw Massacre. It follows a family of psychotic, sadistic, and bloodthirsty (if I’m being honest) necrophiliacs. They kidnap, kill, torture and brutalize anyone who gets in their way. At the end of Devil’s Rejects, they somehow manage to survive a police shootout, escape prison, and waltz on into Mexico (as seen in the franchise finale 3 from Hell).
Look, it’s all complicated.
Main Characters from the franchise:
Captain Spaulding—Sid Haig
Baby Firefly—Sheri Moon Zombie
Otis B. Driftwood—Bill Moseley
Momma Firefly—Karen Black (recast as Leslie Easterbrook after Karen’s passing)
(Other notable appearances throughout: Chris Hardwick, Rainn Wilson, Danny Trejo, Dee Wallace, Ken Foree, and Diamond Dallas Page.)

Look, this is a remake that you either adore or hate with a burning passion. If you’re a horror fanatic, you know what’s up with the original.
I personally adore Zombie’s take. The fact alone that he gave us an entire background story as to why Michael became the psychotic slasher that we’ve come to know and love. Plus, with an increased suspense and gore factor? Worked incredibly well and did justice (in my opinion).
The film made me feel bad for Michael, with moments of child Myers in therapy, particularly his love for making masks to pass the time while he was locked up and the touching family moments between him and his mother Deborah (Sheri Moon).

Add in the supporting cast of Michael McDowell (Loomis), Brad Douriff (Sheriff Leigh), Scout Taylor-Compton (Laurie Strode), etc., and I honestly think that it came together very well as a remake.
The films rated relatively low, but they did gross higher than the budgets that they originally had to film on. Again, I’m not going to give much attention to the higher-ups of critical perception—it all comes down to personal taste.

“Lords of Salem” (2013)
Tumblr media
[[Promotional art for Lords of Salem. (Souce: Google Images)]]
A film that’s centered within Salem, Massachusetts,
this film—you guessed it—tackles witches, occultism, possession, Satan, and all the usual topics. Heidi (Sherri Moon) is a radio DJ who gets sent a mysterious record that’s labeled as being from “The Lords.” From then on out, shit gets a little dicey and admittedly, very disjointed. You can’t fault the cast here, and I loved the visuals that they were going for. However, with set schedule conflicts and multiple rewrites, which led to essentially running out of time to film? As a whole, what looked great on paper just couldn’t be done justice.
My FAVORITE sequence within the film (SPOILERS):
youtube
I can forgive the disjointedness solely because of how mind-boggling and brilliant the film’s history and proper visuals were. Also, we got to see Dee Wallace, Judy Geeson, and Patricia Quinn as creepy and badass witches who moonlight as Heidi’s landlords. Also Meg Foster who leads their coven? Can we talk about what a femme-fueled power cast that is?!

Like I said prior, the film gets a little wild. If you’re...well, buzzed prior to watching, it may make a little more sense.

“31” (2016)
Tumblr media
[[Film poster for 31 (Source: Google)]]
[Synopsis from IMDB; “Five carnival workers are kidnapped and held hostage in an abandoned, hellish compound where they are forced to participate in a violent game, the goal of which is to survive twelve hours against a gang of sadistic clowns.”]
Here, we clearly see that Zombie is invoking his childhood growing up within carnivals. In a 2013 interview with LA Weekly, Zombie divulged more about it:
“When we were kids, my parents would [work at the carnivals], and me and my brother would get dragged along to these things all the time and have to work.”
He went further on to say;
“Yeah, and it's not the nicest world. As a kid, you get exposed to the crazier underworld of the carnival. Me and my brother, when we were very little, we'd be inside the haunted house playing all day. So, already, what people are paying money to be scared [of], we're just playing in because it's fun. We saw the inner workings behind the machines.”
youtube
(”31″ trailer, source; Youtube)
Once again in this film, Zombie brings a powerhouse cast:
Jeff Daniel Phillips as Roscoe Pepper
Meg Foster as Venus Virgo
Malcom McDowell as Father Murder
Judy Geeson as Sister Dragon
Richard Brake as Doom Head
You can view the entire cast at IMDB here.
Set in 1976, Zombie stays true to his nods. Again, depending on taste, this is a huge hit or a wild miss with mindless homicidal violence, campiness, and climbs across the monkey bar of standards that we’re used to seeing from him.
══════════════════
So at this point, you’re probably wondering why I think that it’s time for Rob Zombie to step out of the confinements of his own box...
══════════════════
It’s no secret that Zombie sticks to only a small group of tropes:
Slashers, families or groups of homicidals that lack remorse, the occult, etc. There’s no shame in sticking to what you know. Hell, Zombie has seemingly cracked the code over the past two decades that he’s been in the film industry that so many directors still don’t seem to get.
IMO, despite whatever you personally feel about the films mentioned above- I feel like we’re living a freaky groundhog day repeat within Zombie’s filmography.
══════════════════
Now, if it ain’t broke, why fix it? Look, I’m not saying that Zombie has to change anything. However, I would love to see him tackle some other nuances that we’ve already seen from him in small doses.
- Children: We haven’t seen Zombie exactly take on what horror films depict kids as. Sure, he made a breakout and impeccable choice with young Michael Myers (Daeg Faerch) back in 2007. I personally would adore to see a reimagined (NOT remade) Children of the Corn on acid, one we all know Zombie can tackle and turn every existing view on its head.
- Witchcraft, The Occult, Satan, Voodoo:  Zombie genuinely had a phenomenal concept (on paper) for 2012’s Lords of Salem. It was unfortunate that they ran out of resources and ran into unfortunate circumstances on set while filming.
The film wasn’t a total tank, though, given how inspiring and insane all the visuals were throughout the 1 hr, 41min film. I am absolutely positive that, given a full-force opportunity, Rob could rectify the mess that was out of his control. We completely saw that he provided visuals that left quite the impression, and he could take those taboo subjects by the goat horns.
- Animals (not the human form): It’s no secret that Rob and his wife Sherri are ethical vegetarians. It would be so tongue and cheek to see them take on such topics as animals getting their revenge, or even vegetarians torturing carnivores. This twist on the formula would make for an interesting viewing.
══════════════════
2.) In regard to time periods,
Zombie stays within—and pays homage to—the 1970s and 1980s quite a bit. Obviously, those are the eras that Zombie personally loves the most when it comes to filmmaking. However, it would be very interesting to see him take on current day settings.
Zombie has such a unique viewpoint. Given changing climates in politics, human decline/growth, the economy, etc., he would do work that could easily put Ryan Murphy to shame.
══════════════════
3.) He could also do with some different casting every now and then.
Let me preface this by saying that I adore every repeat casting choice that Zombie has made for his films.
Of course chemistry is a huge thing, and sticking to his friends is a very smart choice. However, he also has the potential to make new stars, boosting the power of those that may be under the radar. He can support those new stars with cameos from classic actors that we haven’t seen in awhile. I can’t begin to even fictionally cast those who fit the bill, but I do believe that with the “Zombie Touch,” he can bring so much more fresh air to the usual casting.
══════════════════
There’s no doubting what Rob Zombie is clearly very good at. Despite mixed reviews from the horror world and critics, it’s time that his fans open their eyes to new possibilities. Of course, there are die-hards, but digging your feet in further doesn’t allow the growth of horror and its ever evolving themes.
Tumblr media
[[ʳᵒᵇ ᶻᵒᵐᵇⁱᵉ, ˢᵒᵘʳᶜᵉ﹔ ᵍᵒᵒᵍˡᵉ ⁱᵐᵃᵍᵉˢ]]
This theory has been on my mind for a very long time—since 3 from Hell came out. I’m sure, in his usual fashion, we won’t be seeing any new films from Rob anytime soon (what with his new album set to release in March 2021, not to mention the toll that the pandemic has had on Hollywood.)
Still, it never hurts to challenge the set standards and ways.

Hell yeah, I need soft things.... get ready bitches, this is all my mainverses, so it’s gonna be LONG lmfao.
--------------
SIMM X THIRTEEN (kids: Zinnia, Martha, Jack) :  --Became licensed doula just so he could be the one to deliver all his kids. Has done so, with aplomb.  In fact never lets anyone forget that he is in fact a licensed doula. Will mention it 3-5 times per conversation with anyone ever.
--Spoiled Thirteen a lot during pregnancy.  To the point that she starts to like being pregnant, lol.  --Goes interchangeably by “Daddy” and “Mum.”  Whichever the kid is feeling at the time. Secretly likes “Mum” best but doesn’t wanna pressure anybody.  --He is terrified his children will find out one day about the horrible things he’s done to their mother’s companions in the past.
--He misses being a mother specifically. His clearest memories of parenthood are as a mother of one daughter, in his second face, which is little-known-of, but is the face Missy referred to when she mentioned a brooch the Doctor gave her “when my daughter....”  He is convinced he will fail his three current babies as he did his first child, by failing to protect her during the Time War, when ostensibly she died (but who knows, maybe she didn’t....?)  --Literal best friends with eldest daughter, Zinnia, thusly named after the first earth flower to bloom in space.  She is him, miniature, down to the fat cheeks, tiny nose, and exact shade of blond hair.  Her faceclaim is Elle Fanning.  She’s artistic (she assigns colors to people’s telepathic “feeling,” with the Master as Red, the Doctor as Blue, herself as Purple) and almost bizarrely prescient about the moods and thoughts of others, especially for a child of three. Her vocab is up to that of a seven or eight year old human child’s.   --Learned to sew to make a lot of her stuffed animals. Learned to cook to make her organic baby food and branched out to adult meals. Previously was a disastrously bad cook.
--Has built the most complex maze of Erector Set toys (think the little builder people from Fraggle Rock lol) for babies.  This, he believes, will be their little playground paradise.  It’s set so that anytime Zinnia opens the nursery door and walks in, a little purple ball rolls along the whole landscape.  During Christmas time (this Koschei loves Christmas even though he hates humans, lol) he also builds in a trainset with a little waving Santa Claus in the engine car.  He delights in spoiling his children with elaborate toys and games.  --Right before Zinnia was born, revamped the entire merged DoctorxMaster superTARDIS to be child proofed, and made the nursery armored so that even in the unlikely event of an enemy penetrating the TARDIS, the nursery would lock and be impenetrable to anyone but either parent.  Woke up at night terrified by nightmares of convoluted ways she could be killed on the TARDIS.  Like, truly implausible ways.  --Took extensive scientifically sound documentation of every stage of both of Thirteen’s pregnancies.  Measured her belly, took videos, asked her roughly every other day if they could go take a new sonogram.
--Gained about 25 lbs of sympathy weight over the first pregnancy. All custard cream stress-eating.
--Upon Thirteen’s urging, named their next kids, fraternal twins, Martha and Jack, after companions they both felt they’d especially wronged, as a vow to do better.
--Zinnia adores Bill Potts, or “Auntie Bill.” After the Master offers careful conversation (and profuse sincere apology) to Bill, who is living with Heather on a distant planet, they very slowly reconcile their friendship from their time on the Mondasian ship.  He convinces her to talk to the Doctor, who also apologizes and reconciles with Bill. Zinnia has decided she will be Bill’s best friend forever.
--Koschei will impenitently kill anyone who threatens his children’s lives, and has. And not in a quick merciful way.
--Ironically he regularly has nightmares about converting all three of them, but especially Zinnia, into Cybermen: something he would die before ever doing.
--This Koschei is his babie’s best A) playmate (no game is too silly or undignified), B) storyteller, and C) cheerleader/advocate.  He can pull any child out of the deepest meltdown or tantrum or sad spot or post-nightmare fear with a snuggle and just a few words.  His sanguine disposition and bombastic charm are a comfort to them.
--This Koschei and Thirteen are planning on terraforming Gallifrey in their timeline, which is POST-Timeless-Children canon.  They want to plant a silver tree and build an entire “home base” farm around it, where their babies can play and grow up knowing the land of their heritage.
SIMM x NINE:
--He absolutely wants a kid, wants to be “mum,” with all the same memories from his Second face, but is afraid to ask Nine about loom tech now that Nine destroyed Gallifrey. Will it upset, guilt, or trigger his husband to bring up anything lost to the carnage?
SIMM x TWELVE:
--He absolutely wants a kid, wants to be “mum,” and is wholly intending to ask the Doctor at the right moment in their relationship, when the Doctor is more secure that he’s forgiven and that Koschei harbors no lingering resentments or mistrust (he really doesn’t, but this Doctor is very tired and emotionally fragile, and is having a hard time believing him).  As all Time Lords are intersex (EU canon, though I can’t remember the source now, gah), he’s considering carrying the first child the “non-loomy way,”  though managing this will be difficult given the only thing all Time Lords share reproductively is a uterus.  If that can’t be managed, he wants them to build a loom. And he will demand that they do, lmao.
DHAWAN x THIRTEEN (children: Nova): --Thirteen is “mum” and Koschei is “mama.”
--During Thirteen’s pregnancy, Koschei took progress photos of her belly and painted her at every stage, in the nude.   He’s an accomplished visual artist in this face.
--She asked that he also paint a planet on her pregnant belly.  He obliged of course.
--He hid all her disgusting sweets and candies during her pregnancy, with riddles and notes explaining “bad for baby xoxo,” and she almost killed him.
--But he also spoiled her a lot.
--Koschei is an accomplished seamstress ;) and sews all of Nova’s clothes.  She is very haute couture because of mama.
--Nova is born deaf.  She and her mama have been telepathically “conversing” since she was in the womb, however, so they already have their own developed language.  Koschei learns comprehensive BSL in one day by putting his brain on three separate simultaneous tracks (as he’s shown able to do in The Timeless Children) and devoting each to mastery of the vocabulary. He then teaches it to his daughter when she’s old enough to learn.
--Thirteen often calls Koschei “mama kangaroo.” This is because he carries Nova everywhere inside whatever shirt he’s wearing, like it’s a kangaroo pouch.  He does this until she’s like seven or eight and just too big for it.  He cries when he has to stop.  She’s pretty bummed out too, but she starts to ride around on his back instead.
--During the aftermath of the Timeless Children events, Koschei sought therapy, even voluntarily staying at a facility for mental wellness when he could have easily sabotaged the efforts and broken out.  He learned all kinds of self-soothing mindfulness and meditation techniques there. He teaches these telepathically to Nova and they sit together yogi style meditating. Sometimes this is a hybrid event with tea parties. They both wear their best dress.
--They also enjoy taking a dip in the TARDIS’s pool together.  He plays Jaws to make her laugh.
--I have more but I’ll stop. FOR NOW.
DHAWAN x NINE:
--Same exact deal as Simm and Nine.  Same. Exact. Deal, but mixed up with Simm and Twelve :3c So he wants to very literally become a mum with his big tough husband-to-be.
----------
Both of my muses live and die for their children.  They adore being dadmums.  They are the best version of themselves with and for their babies.

Any pen/ink/general drawing books that you'd recommend? Love your style so much.
Short answe: I don’t know of any good drawing books specifically about pen and ink drawing. I just like to ogle my favorite artists’ work and see how they draw stuff, what details they leave out/put in, when they use big black fills of ink and when they don’t, etc.
For figure drawing I always recommend “Bridgeman’s Guide to Figure Drawing”. I like how much it emphasizes understanding drawing volume and rhythm, not just the technical stuff, like knowing the names of all the muscles in the body. A lot of people I know also swear by the Andrew Loomis drawing books!
Long answer: What initially got me inspired to start doing more ink work was reading Moebius’ “Incal” and also some of Milo Manara’s erotic work. I love the Europeans. Bill Watterson’s Calvin and Hobbes has been a long time inspiration too. You can get a lot out of just trying to make marks and lines like your heroes.
Finally, just try a lot of different kinds of pens. Not every pen is right for every person and I kept trying different ones until I found one that felt like it could do what I wanted it to.
In my own sketchbook I like using normal ballpoint pens, Stabilo colored ink fine point pens, Kuretake ZIG Mangaka size 05 or 08, most of my recent drawings and Inktober ones have been made with Tombow Fudenosuke Brush Pen(it’s not really a brush pen but it has a little line variation). You’ll recognize it from my photos probably.

THE PERMANENT RAIN PRESS INTERVIEW WITH ARCH ENEMY
Tumblr media
Arch Enemy is a band formed from many parts and places – originating in Sweden but now comprised of members from North America as well. Their latest album, Will to Power, was released in September via Century Media Records—a relentless, melodic death compilation of brutal riffs and a no holds barred vocal performance from Alissa White-Gluz, who was born and raised in Montreal. We sat down with the frontwoman prior to Arch Enemy’s co-headliner at the Vogue Theatre, alongside Trivium.
1. Your latest release, Will to Power, came out earlier this year. It is the second effort by you, Alissa, to contribute in full – with the addition of clean vocals and the introduction of Jeff Loomis of Nevermore fame on guitar as well. What new inspirations did you draw from this time around that differentiates Will to Power from former releases?
I don’t know if there were any particular influences in writing on Will to Power compared to War Eternal. I’m always inspired by the members in my band; the music that they write to provide a canvas for me to put lyrics and vocals on top of. I’m always happy to put in my two cents to contribute in any way possible. I contributed what felt best for the music and what felt right for me to make the best music possible.
2. What is your favourite track to play live off the new album?
We’ve played about half the album live, but “The Race” is really upbeat; I wrote the lyrics so I suppose there’s a little bit of a bias there. I still love singing Michael’s or Daniel’s [lyrics], but “The Race” is very high energy and seems to get people going. It’s probably one of the most challenging, too, which pushes me as well.
3. I think it’s always exciting to have a mixed bill in terms of genres. How has your North American tour been alongside fellow bands Trivium, While She Sleeps and Fit for An Autopsy? Have there been any memorable moments?
It’s really been great – it’s a really strong tour package; we all play different genres but we have a similar appeal. Fit for An Autopsy is really heavy, While She Sleeps is really catchy, very UK-sounding, and of course Trivium – everyone knows what they sound like. And of course, us, who don’t sound like any of the other bands but we all share a commonality of having melodies. All the shows have been great with a lot of them being sold out. For me personally, playing a sold-out Montreal show was the highlight as that is where I grew up.
4. Which bands would you like to collaborate and/or tour with in the future that you haven’t already?
I’d love to tour with Doyle for obvious reasons. Megadeth too, because I love them. And even though it wouldn’t fit, I would love to tour with Halestorm as they’re a fun rock and roll band. Lzzy is such an amazing performer, singer and musician... but I suppose that’s kind of selfish—when it comes to putting together an actual tour package, I think I’d be pretty terrible at assembling one as it’d just be music that I like and not necessarily what our fans would like. But we’ve been very fortunate with who we’ve been touring with this year – including this current leg and earlier in the year with Lacuna Coil, who I’d love to tour with again.
5. Summer is always busy with festivals—particularly in Europe, which accommodates the likes of Wacken, Bloodstock and Resurrection Fest. Do you prefer playing larger shows or more intimate venues?
I know that you’re supposed to say the more intimate shows, but I enjoy the big stages with the bigger audiences; functionally, it allows me to move around more on stage. If you add in the acoustics... in a small room, it’s harder to control the volume on stage which makes it very difficult to hear. With a large stage, programming monitors to get a really clean and concise sound is better – but both have their appeal. Shows like tonight or even smaller club shows, they’re fun, but logistically there’s a few more challenges you have to work around.
youtube
6. You have some special merch designed for your Canadian shows, jersey shirts inspired by Canadian hockey teams. How did this come about?
I have a friend who is a merchandiser and a fellow Montrealer, and he’s a genius when it comes to merch items. He’s able to look at clothing and figure out how to incorporate it with our band. So for the jerseys, obviously as Canadians love hockey, he figured it would be awesome as an exclusive for the Canadian dates. But for me personally, I know nothing about hockey – so no judgement.
7. It looks like you’re headed off for a few more European dates at the conclusion of this tour. Can we expect anything else from Arch Enemy or individual projects from that point onward?
We have six weeks after on a European tour with Wintersun, Tribulation and Jinjer, which is happening in January and February. For March and April we’re looking into Southeast Asia and Australia, with summer focusing on festivals again—so we’re actually booked until 2019, which is what Arch Enemy does. If we ever have time off touring, you’ll generally hear about my solo project [Alissa], Michael’s project Spiritual Beggars, or Jeff Loomis’ work. That’s when we get to separate and focus on our own music, but we currently don’t have any time.
8. As per tradition with the Permanent Rain Press, we ask you: “If you could be any ice cream flavour, which would you be and why?”
I would want something that tastes really bad so I wouldn’t get eaten and remain in existence.
_________________________________________________________________
Thank you to Alissa for taking the time—and probably the most metal response we’ve heard yet to our signature ice cream question! Check out http://www.archenemy.net/en/ for news, tour dates, and more. Their music is available for streaming on Spotify.

Hey, y’all. So, I know I haven’t exactly been posting much on here lately. Life’s been hectic to say the least. Then again, it’s 2020 and we’re still in the middle of a pandemic, so hectic is almost the new normal. I just wanted to let y’all know that I haven’t stopped writing. In fact, I’ve been working on stories with @mychemicalimagines and @supernaturalwritingbunker. I decided I would let you know what they were, in case y’all wanted to go check ‘em out!

QUEENS 1930s
I’ve begun to think about “stuff” lately.
Forgotten New York celebrated its 20th anniversary this year, and I didn’t start on it until 1998, when I was 40 years old. This was just a few years after the World Wide Web started getting really popular; had the internet been around in the 1970s, think of how large Forgotten NY would be by now. If you’re keeping score there are 3,715 separate posts, which consist of tens of thousands of images, if you estimate ten images per page (many posts have one image but many have 100!) To cut to the chase, I’m thinking about legacy. In the immediate offing, I’m covered by the Greater Astoria Historical Society, which will continue the hosting if I’m run over by a streetcar or something. Long-term? I’m 61 now (in 2019), and hope to do this as long as I’m physically able. My energy levels are still as good as ever — I do a lot of walking and bicycling, though I can’t walk 20+ miles a day like some friends (to my frustration).
How will Forgotten New York be remembered when it ceases everyday production? Well, as a photographer and chronicler of New York city infrastructure, I’d be honored to be whispered about in the same breath as photographers Percy Loomis Sperr, Eugene Armbruster, Edgar “E.E.” Rutter, and the anonymous photographers who shot every property in New York City for tax purposes; their work can be found in the New York Public Library archives and in the NYC Municipal Archives. Their photography was primarily documentarian over esthetic: there wasn’t a budding Ansel Adams in the bunch. For esthetics, you’d be advised to turn to Berenice Abbott, who deftly managed to combine both everyday chronicling and beautiful photography, having been influenced by the great Parisian art photographer Eugene Atget and by artists Man Ray and Marcel Duchamp. I don’t aspire to Abbott’s artistry, but I certainly aspire to the great documentary powers the other photographers I mentioned were able to achieve.
Remember, photography was an expensive, cumbersome business for all mentioned above. I have a camera with a small, thin chip in it that can record over 1,000 pictures depending on its setting, as well as a portable telephone that has an excellent camera almost as an afterthought. Street photography has never been easier. As far as modern work goes there’s Matt Weber, one of the best New York street photographers, and for night photography the best I’ve seen is Mitch Waxman, who sticks mainly to western Queens, especially the Newtown Creek area.
A few years ago, I got my mitts on nearly 1,000 photographs taken all over Queens between 1929 and 1940 primarily as a method of recording recent street paving jobs. Thus, the focus is on roadways, either those recently repaved or are about to be repaved. Everything else seemed to be done as a sidelight though, as you’ll see, some fascinating building interiors were also recorded as part of the project. I have a somewhat busy weekend with a tour scheduled, so I thought I would take a few of these and scribble something about what I’m seeing in each.
164th Street at Jewel Avenue, looking north, July 7, 1936
In the late 19th and early 20th Century, a trolley line connected Flushing and Jamaica, running originally through the farms and fields of Fresh Meadows. The above image was captured at 164th Street and Jewel Avenue in 1936, just a few months before service ended in 1937. In short order, the tracks were pulled up, the weeds paved over, a center median added, and 164th Street became the fast and furious stretch we know it as today between Flushing Cemetery and the Grand Central Parkway.
South of Grand Central Parkway the trolley line veered off 164th and rode on its own right of way to a terminal on Jamaica Avenue at about 160th Street. In the decades since, most of this trolley route has been either eliminated or hidden pretty well, but the four-lane width of 164th Street is a legacy of the route. As you can se there was one lane of traffic on the east side of the street, with the rest taken up by trolley tracks. This photo was about a year before service ended, and the line seems to be in decline, with plants and weeds sprouting between the tracks. For more information see Stephen Meyers’ book, Lost Trolleys of Queens and Long Island.
In the photo, the lengthy building seen on the right distance is still there in 2019.
Jewel Avenue is an unusual named street that runs from Forest Hills across Flushing Meadows-Corona Park all the way to Fresh Meadows. It’s the only remnant of a group of streets east of Queens Boulevard in Forest Hills named in alphabetical order that turn up on maps from the early 20th Century. The streets in sequence were named Atom, Balfour, Chittenden, DeKoven, Euclid, Fife, Gown, Harvest, Ibis, Jewel, Kelvin, Livingston, Meteor, Nome, Occident, Pilgrim, Quality, Ruskin, Sample, Thurman, Uriu, Verona, Webb, and Zuni; it’s likely the streets were only on the planning boards till they were built mid-century, by which time they carried the numbers (68th Road, 68th Drive etc) they do today. I don’t know why the Jewel Avenue name was kept; it’s one of the few non-numbered streets, along with Northern Blvd. and Roosevelt Avenue, that cross Flushing Meadows-Corona Park.
The above photo was taken by the Somach Photographic Company, which also did a large amount of work recording what NYC streets looked like in the 1930s.
Ocean Promenade (Rockaway Beach Boardwalk) at Beach 101 Street
I cropped out the date on this photo to get my optimum width, but again, it’s sometime in the mid-1930s in late April. The season is just getting started at Gobel’s hot dog and hamburger stand. Note the barrel that was used to dispense Hires’ Root Beer. Silex coffeemakers debuted in 1915 and merged with Proctor Electric in 1960, creating the Proctor Silex company, which merged with Hamilton Beach in 1990.
The photos have largely yet to see the light, but in October 2018 I walked the length of the Rockaway Beach boardwalk, which aside from a short section by Riis Park near the Marine Parkway (Gil Hodges) Bridge, runs continuously from Beach 126th to Beach 9th Street (numbered streets on the peninsula get bigger from east to west). In 2012, Hurricane Sandy did a number on the old wooden boardwalk and it needed to be rebuilt virtually for its entire length. It’s now a state of the art seaside walk, but at the loss of the old “boardwalk” feel as synthetic materials were used instead of good old wood planks.
What is also missing are boardwalk-side vendors like this; I have a wealth of photos depicting these stands which numbered in the dozens. What happened to them? The closure of the Rockaway Playland amusement park in the early 1980s didn’t help, and today, not one remains. Also: “Specifically [Robert Moses’] 1939 road to nowhere called Shore Front Parkway. As part of the construction, no businesses or dwellings were allowed within 200′ of the boardwalk and a lot of homes, businesses and about half of Playland.
Capitol Diner, Lawrence Street, February 18, 1932
This E.E. Rutter photo of a roadside railroad-car style diner was taken in an era when fast food franchises such as Starbucks and McDonalds did not exist. Yet it can be said that the Dunkin’ Donuts of the world are the direct descendants of such road food stands, which evolved into steel and chrome diners. Such diners are now themselves dying out, as their owners retire and developers prefer to build multistory buildings in their footprints.
Yet, these small diners, the earliest of which were located in decommissioned railroad cars, were nearly ubiquitous even in downtown areas in the 1930s and 1940s; they’re all over scenes in the Municipal Archives linked above.
In 1969, the Department of Traffic (now Transportation) decided to rename 122nd Street, College Point Causeway, Lawrence Street, and Rodman Street under the single moniker College Point Boulevard. a short stub still bears the name Lawrence Street in Queensboro Hill. You have to be a little careful with the labeling on these photos; the “College Point Causeway” moniker only applied to the current stretch of College Point Boulevard on the diagonal stretch between 26th Avenue and the Whitestone Expressway; south of that, the bulk of the road was called Lawrence Street and that’s where this photo was likely taken.
On the ads, the Willys-Knight Company produced autos between 1915 and 1933. Willys, named for John Willys, developed one of the first “jeeps” used in World War II and the brand name survived until the late 1950s and a series of mergers. The Whippet was a popular model named for the racing dogs, in production between 1926 and 1931. And,
The Scranton & Lehigh Coal Company was one of Pennsylvania’s large coal companies, supplying the Northeast with anthracite and other coal products. The engines that powered Brooklyn ran on coal; everything from heating homes and apartments, to heating the offices, schools, and churches of the borough, to the huge boilers that powered the many factories in the city. Coal was the fuel that kept it all going until well after World War II. Even today, a coal furnace still turns up here and there; they were long lasting, powerful, but simple heat producers. [Brownstoner]
“Theater building,” Lawrence Street, February 19, 1932
Another Rutter photo from the same period, also labeled College Point Causeway, shows a former domicile that has been turned into a billboard for several local movie theaters and the features playing at the time.
On the top floor are bills advertising the Taft Theatre, opened on Main Street in 1917 Flushing and renamed after President William Howard Taft, who passed away in 1930. It was a first run theater, but could not compete with the nearby RKO Keiths and Prospect Theatres, and closed in 1955. Both the Keiths and the Prospect survived until the mid-1980s: the RKO Keiths shell building is still on Main and Roosevelt Avenue, awaiting redevelopment. The Loew’s Valencia in Jamaica has been a church for several decades, but its near-phantamagorical detail has been preserved.
As far as the features go, The Champ was a 1931 film directed by King Vidor about a broken-down boxer played by Wallace Beery (who won the Best Actor Academy Award) and his son, played by Jackie Cooper, who had a lengthy career: he played Daily Planet editor Perry White 47 years later in the first Christopher Reeve Superman. Little-remembered today, Marie Dressler earned a Best Actress nomination in Emma.
Newsstand, Cross Island Boulevard, July 22, 1938
This photo is slugged “Cross Island Boulevard” which is the former name of Francis Lewis Boulevard; when the Cross Island Parkway was built in the late 1930s, Cross Island Boulevard was renamed shortly afterward to avoid confusion.
Depicted is a typical newsstand of the period. The top shelf is full of romance and movie magazines, few of which survive today. Titles such as Popular Science, Better Homes and Gardens and Good Housekeeping are still in business today, but none of the newspapers shown, The Long Island Daily Star, The New York Sun, and the North Shore Daily Journal, are. The New York Sun was revived as a daily in the 2000s and still exists in online form.
Laurel Hill Boulevard and 47th Street, March 28, 1938
Nothing in this photo remains; the buildings on both sides have long been razed, and Laurel Hill Boulevard is now the service road on either side of the Brooklyn-Queens Expressway. Changes were soon to come to this placid scene as the first Kosciuszko Bridge was spanning over Newtown Creek and the BQE was planned to connect Brooklyn and Queens. Once in Queens, the BQE was slated to follow the diagonal route of Laurel Hill Boulevard between the creek and Queens Boulevard, whereupon it would turn north to fork into two sections at Grand Central Parkway.
Laurel Hill Boulevard, named for a small neighborhood in Queens between Calvary Cemetery and 50th Street north of the LIRR Montauk tracks, dates back to the colonial era when it was paved with shells and known as Shell Road. It skirts the right end of Calvary Cemetery before following the BQE to Queens Boulevard.
James Gilder Bar & Grill, March 30, 1938
The James Gilder bar was located in one of the buildings depicted in 1938 that would soon give way to BQE construction.
Interborough Parkway, Cypress Hills Cemetery, January 27, 1932
The Jackie Robinson Parkway along with the Grand Central were the first of NYC’s “parkways” providing express (more or less) auto through-routing built within New York City. The “Jackie” unusually begins at the confluence of Jamaica and Pennsylvania Avenues in East New York, twisting through a convoluted route through the “cemetery belt” and Forest Park at the Brooklyn-Queens border, meeting the Grand Central at Flushing Meadows.
Here it is pictured as it was constructed in Cypress Hills Cemetery on January 27, 1932 in an E.E. Rutter photograph. Rutter chronicled the “Jackie,” which was called the Interboro Parkway until 1997 when it was renamed in honor of the first African American major league baseball player, who himself is interred in Cypress Hills. The parkway was rebuilt to handle modern traffic volumes from 1987-1992, eliminating the last traces of the original railings and overpasses seen here.
Metropolitan Beer Gardens, Metropolitan Avenue at Union Turnpike, June 28, 1933
Before the Interborough Parkway opened in 1935, narrow, two-lane Metropolitan Avenue was one of the main traffic routes connecting the Brooklyn waterfront and Jamaica. It was constructed as the Williamsburg and Jamaica Turnpike during the James Madison presidential administration in the 1810s and renamed Metropolitan Avenue after the Civil War. Union Turnpike (its name suggests it was originally tolled, as Metropolitan avenue had been) is a somewhat newer route and remained incomplete until the early 20th Century as an extension of Union Avenue, originally a short route in Glendale.
In the early 1930s, the Interborough Parkway was under construction, paralleling Union Turnpike for a portion of its route. No trace of the Metropolitan Beer Gardens exists today, and either the parkway construction or Prohibition (repealed in December 1933) may have done it in; beer gardens around town either went the speakeasy route or sold “near-beer” containing less than 0.5% alcohol by volume.
PS 63, October 30, 1929
Public School 63, which still exists today in a newer building (a massive edifice at Sutter Avenue between 90th and 91st Streets in Ozone Park) is pictured in a 1929 photo by E.E. Rutter. Though it’s slugged “Linden Boulevard” I can’t be sure it was located on that street as in the early 20th Century, Linden Boulevard, which has its origins miles to the west in Flatbush, was extended east through Queens in a halfhearted fashion; today Linden Boulevard exists in a number of separate pieces in Ozone Park, regaining traction for good in South Jamaica, where it runs continuously into Elmont in Nassau County along the former route of Central Avenue.
I suspect this photo was taken on Old South Road which decades ago was renamed in sections as Pitkin Avenue and Albert Road. Indeed, the present PS 63 is called the Old South School, which might cement it for you.
Soda Candy, Rockaway Beach Boulevard, April 26, 1938
Though Rockaway Beach Boulevard was rerouted in the 1970s a block north of this location and given extra lanes, a short, one-block stretch was left over and actually this portion of the road still exists. One thing you notice about this corner grocery is the Meadow Gold Ice Cream “privilege sign” in which a company would pay for a sidewalk sign, provided its product was prominently shown on the sign (several Coca-Cola signs around town in this category still exist. Meadow Gold, which also distributes other dairy products, is still found in several parts of the country.
Smith Brothers Ice Cream, Ditmars Boulevard and 23rd Avenue, East Elmhurst
One such Coca-Cola “privilege sign” can be found at this roadside grocery at Ditmars Boulevard and 23rd Avenue near Glenn Curtiss Airport, now LaGuardia Airport. In the forefront is a placard for Smith Brothers Ice Cream, a popular brand in the early 20th Century. This brand was not originated by the bearded fellows on the cough drop boxes, but company scion Richard Smith developed the Früsen-Gladjé, Chipwich, Eskimo Pie and other dessert brands.
Van Wyck Expressway at 95th Avenue, September 7, 1934
The furiously mustachioed Robert Anderson Van Wyck was the first mayor of Greater New York, serving from 1898-1901. His involvement with American Ice, a monopoly in the necessary commodity before the age of universal refrigeration, cost him his political career. Nonetheless when a major route was built between Jamaica Avenue and Rockaway Boulevard in the early 20th Century it received his name, Van Wyck Boulevard.
In the early 1950s, NYC traffic czar Robert Moses built the Van Wyck Expressway along this route from Flushing Meadows south to Idlewild, now JFK Airport. The west side of Van Wyck Boulevard was retained, while everything on the east side was demolished; the buildings ween on the right side of the photo at 95th Avenue still stand. Since hundreds of residences were retained this is one of the few Expressways in NYC that have numbered addresses.
Van Wyck likely pronounced his name with a long “why” but today, most locals use the WICK pronunciation.
Lawrence Street (College Point Boulevard) at 36th Avenue, February 18, 1932
The Flushing Main Street station is so-called because there used to be a Flushing Bridge Street station located on the Long Island Rail Road Whitestone Branch, which operated from the mid-1800s to 1932, branching from the Port Washington line at Flushing Meadows and running north and east to Whitestone Landing at the East River at 152nd Street. After the LIRR unsuccessfully tried selling the line to NYC to operate as a subway line (presumably a connection would be made to the Flushing Line, today’s #7 train) the LIRR shut it down for nonridership.
This photo shows the branch as it crossed Lawrence Street, now College Point Boulevard; the Flushing Bridge Street station was just east of here. When the tracks and signals were cleared away, the one-block stretch of King Road would replace them.
Gas station, Whitestone Parkway, July 27, 1937
Among the items seen are a coin-operated public telephone, a Gulf calendar, and an ad for the upcoming World’s Fair to be held in Flushing Meadows in 1939. The Parkway gained expressway status some years after the Whitestone Bridge opened in the mid-1930s.
I’ll get back to recent photos — but from time to time, I’ll be showing some of these classics to indicate how much has changed and how much has stayed the same. You can find much more in the book I wrote with GAHS, Forgotten Queens.
Check out the ForgottenBook, take a look at the gift shop, and as always, “comment…as you see fit.”

Figure Drawing: Repeating What You Should Already Know
-By Arnie Fenner
I think a simple truism about being an artist is that, regardless of stature or status, regardless of the number of years spent sitting at the table, easel, or monitor, regardless of degrees from universities or from the School of Hard Knocks...you're always something of a student. And always will be.
As an artist, you're never (or should never be) entirely satisfied with "where you're at" and, essentially, are always practicing—striving—to get better at the craft. Every doodle, every scribble or sketch is part of the process, part of being an artist. It doesn't stop: you're always experimenting and exploring and observing and thinking. You're always trying to learn or master techniques; you're always studying color and composition and light and gestures and character and, above all, anatomy. Regardless of personal style or career direction, the ability to draw a convincing human figure is truly the core of being an artist. Continuing to practice at it helps artists maintain their visual and spatial abilities: it's almost a form of calisthenics of skills. Every time the model moves their arm or tilts their head, every time they change their pose, there is something new to see, to understand, and to learn.
And, because drawing the figure is fundamental, successfully communicating with and connecting to an audience as a creator—whether the approach is realistic, distorted, cartoonish, or abstract, whether the subjects are people or animals or monsters or landscapes—rests firmly on that foundation. It is the beginning for anything you want to do artistically. As Donato said in his post last year on MC, "I find that life drawing is an important way to reconnect with the main subject in much of my work, that of the human figure. The varied forms of expression and the enlightened discovers which occur while drawing helps to fuel my imagination and inform my eye as to what is possible for shape design within characters."
Above: A figure drawing by Andrew Loomis.
Above left: A late-1950s drawing by Frank Frazetta. Above right: Drawing by Willy Pogany.
A highlight of Spectrum Fantastic Art Live has been the late-night figure drawing party (with several nude models) generously sponsored by Kansas City's The Illustration Academy. Even with pizza (graciously provided by the Aladdin Hotel) and a cash bar, it is a surprisingly serious party; there's relatively little chatter and what there is tends to be in whispers. The focus is on drawing, on getting the most out of the opportunity. I've heard that some have been somewhat intimidated by the intensity of the room, but I've also heard that others were absolutely giddy to be sitting and sketching next to—and getting feedback from—Justin Sweet or Donato or Iain McCaig or Android Jones or Mark English.
Above: John English conducting a figure drawing class during The
Illustration Academy's 2017 Summer Workshop. Photo by Timmy Trabon.
Starting clockwise above left: George Pratt, Bill Sienkiewicz, Mark English, Jeffrey Alan Love.
Figure drawing classes, led and critiqued by the teachers, are an important part of
The Illustration Academy's annual workshops. At the conclusion, the instructors' originals
(like the samples shown above) are given to the students via a raffle.
Drawing from life whenever possible should be high on any artist's list—and, of course, the knowledge obtained through the process is applicable to everything you do, whether you work digitally or in traditional media. I talk often about The Illustration Academy because I know them well (they're local, after all), respect the hell out of what they do, have had the opportunity to sit in on their workshops, and have spent time with their instructors over the years. They're devoted to not only helping artists improve their skills but also in helping them achieve their professional goals. Besides actively emphasizing figure drawing in their curriculum—and hosting drawing events as they have at SFAL as a part of their outreach mission—the Academy hires models and sponsors semi-regular sessions open to all artists at the Interurban Art House (in one of KC's suburbs) throughout the year. Watching IA's Facebook page is a good way for people to stay abreast of dates. Naturally, there are similar gatherings all over (like the Sketch Nights at the Society of Illustrators in New York every Tuesday and Thursday) and it shouldn't be a surprise that I encourage everyone to take advantage of these opportunities whenever and wherever they're offered. (The social and networking aspects of such gatherings are extremely important to career growth as well.)
Above: George Pratt (on the right) oversees the give-away of the instructors'
figure drawings to students. As an aside, let me talk about George for a moment:
A renowned comics artist, illustrator, and Fine Artist, his graphic novel
Enemy Ace: War Idyl has been translated into nine languages and for a time was
required reading at West Point. Besides teaching at the Illustration Academy,
George has taught at Pratt and the SVA and is currently an instructor at the Ringling College
of Art and Design. The IA's Summer Workshop lasts five weeks (students can sign up for
one or all) and features a different group of instructors each week: George and John English
teach during all five. And, yes, there are on-line classes available, too. Anyway, readers
can learn a bit more about The Illustration Academy and other great workshop
opportunities in my "Summer School" post some weeks back.
Depending on location, finances, or other circumstances, I know it can be difficult-to-impossible for some to take part in a figure drawing get-together...but that doesn't mean you can't still practice. Use family members or friends as models and if even that doesn't work out, you might recall that I've previously pointed out various video resources via YouTube that you can use at your own time, pace, and convenience.
