Interview: Nao from Tendouji - "Buddy Club"

Nao at the cafe, with the chocolate I offered him as a souvenir from Switzerland.

Back in May 2023, I flew to Tokyo to learn Japanese and discover the local rock music scene. I met many musicians, including Nao from Tendouji, one of my favorite bands from Japan. Sadly I couldn’t watch them perform live while I was there, but Nao still made time for an interview, right before leaving for a gig in Kobe the very same evening.

So we met in a café in the greater Tokyo on a sunny morning. I remember getting lost and being a little bit late, so the first thing I did was apologize. Thankfully, Nao laughed and even complimented my broken Japanese. We did the interview in a mix of English and Japanese, and I compiled all below. Many thanks to Nao and the guys from DYGL for making this interview possible !

What’s a regular day like in your life ?

Nao: I like taking walks. Everyday I wake up, have tea and take a walk. I make music full time.

This reminds me of the song Shining from your latest EP, where you guys sing ‘I just walk until something catches my eye’.

Our bassist wrote the song ! Back then we did a long tour. We went to a lot of places and felt like Japan was such a beautiful place. The atmosphere changes from the strength of the other songs on the record. We made a very relaxed song !

How is life in Japan as an indie musician ?

People think being a musician is an unusual job. Musicians are respected for entertainment, but they are discriminated against in other fields. For example, it’s hard to rent an apartment because of our job. It would probably be different if we were very famous, but we are indie musicians.

You also performed abroad – did you get any support from the government ?

No, we did it with our own money. When we played South by Southwest four years ago, we got in touch with a US record company and booked many shows ourselves.

You released your first EP, Mad City, back in 2017. In what ways has the Tokyo rock music scene evolved since then ?

In 2017, the Tokyo indie scene, and guitar music, were popular within the Japanese music scene. Now, it has become even more independent. Hip hop is now the main scene. We are still doing good, although it was very difficult during the pandemic.

Could we talk about your latest EP, Buddy Club ?

Hattrick was made by Kenji, BeachBoys is my song, YD9000 is our drummer’s and Shining is our bassist’s. We wanted to do it like the Beatles, so everyone had their own song ! We might keep doing the same for our next albums.

You write the lyrics mostly in English. Why did you make this choice ?

When I was a child, I lived in Seattle for three years. When I came back to Japan, I couldn’t speak Japanese, only English ! In primary school, all the students said ‘Here’s the American’. They discriminated against me because I spoke English. I thought, ‘I don’t want to speak English well, because if I do, they make fun of me.’ So during English class, I spoke English badly on purpose. I think that education is not good (laughs). So when I started this band, I wanted our music to be heard in every country and go back to Seattle. It’s difficult to be understood aborad with Japanese lyrics, so I chose English.

What can we expect from Tendouji in the future ?

We want to go to Europe, US and Asia. We would also like to play in South by Southwest again !

Eddie being mad at Buck during the lawsuit era was kinda insane because:

• He didn't really even have anything to be mad about.

• The lawyer bought up personal stuff about others (Bobby's addiction, Hen's past job, Chimney's stabbing) but the only personal thing about Eddie that was talked about was his wife's death & only in the context of Bobby letting him back to work so soon after that.

• It can be argued that Eddie was mad on behalf of Bobby, but he never once reprimanded Buck for suing Bobby.

• So, the only reason left for Eddie's anger is not being able to talk to Buck.

• This was right after he told him he trusted Buck with his son the most in the world. And then Buck didn't give it a second thought that he won't be able to talk to Eddie.

• And that drives Eddie crazy with anger because how dare Buck not think about him even once before deciding that he's okay with not talking to him.

• Also, it's not entirely Buck's fault because the whole thing was supposed to be temporary anyways. Whether he won or lost, once the case was over, he was allowed to talk to them.

• But Eddie cannot even digest that, because he has come to rely on Buck for everything.

• And that makes him mad at himself too, because how dare he assume Buck would stay for him and his son when Christopher's own mother didn't.

• Thus, he blames himself for again relying on someone when the world has proven to him again and again that he and Christopher only have each other.

• And that makes him so angry that he joins a fucking fight club.

Bonus: When Buck comes back, Eddie forgives him in an instant. Something he couldn't bring himself to do for Shannon, who was supposed to be the love of his life.

"So my boss's son's, partner broke their leg Tuesday after tripping over their 15 year old terrier." Karen explains and Hen can't help but look back towards where Paisley is lounging on the arm chair (Hen's favorite seat that she has lost to that sassy fur ball) with worry. Her wife chuckles reading Hen's internal concern, "Babe, Paisley is as pure bred as they come. We'll be lucky if she makes it to 10." "That pure bred survived an earthquake and a collapsed building. I wouldn't put it past her to make it way past 10 out of spite alone.” Hen remarks, turning back to Karen. Karen rolls her eyes, but gets back on topic, "Anyway. Harris, that's the partner, got their hands on some passes to that super exclusive gay club, The Green Carnation for this Friday." "You mean the place that runs a background check rivaling the FBI, makes every patron sign NDA's, and will blacklist a person from every gay bar from here to Vegas if they break said NDA? The place that is rumored to host not only out celebrities, but also the deeply closeted, tilt the world on it's axis if they ever came out, big names? That gay club?" Hen questions, her excitement starting to rise. Her very sexy and somehow very connected wife smirks, "The very one. And poor Harris just can't fathom trying to hop around on one leg and not drink thanks to their newly acquired pain meds. So they had their partner-" "Your boss's son." Hen remembers, leaning towards Karen, who instinctually gets closer as well. "Karson, with a K, starts to asks around his dads work because you know, we're literal rocket scientist working on very classified information." "Who better to invite to a secret club than those who work on secret projects." "Exactly." Karen's smirk becomes wicked (and very sinful), "And wouldn't you know, the only non-straight and married person around is yours truly." Hen honest to go squeals, loud and bubbling with elation, "You got us passes to The Green Carnation?!" "With a pre-paid drink package. All we have to do is agree to the background check and sign the NDA." Karen replies with a broad grin. Hen can no longer hold herself back and practically tackles her wife with a teeth clattering kiss. Karen, as always, catches her and kisses back 110%. ("So, my 48 off falls on the weekend." Eddie states and he takes notice of Buck's sly grin forming, his boyfriend most likely on the same train of thought, "And since it's still your bye week..." "You want to dance the night away with other secret gays." Evan finishes. Eddie smirks, "And get a private room blow job." The quarterback's smile is almost feral like, "I'll make the reservation." And Eddie watches Buck tap on the contact Florists with the green clover next to it. The phone rings twice before a deep voice comes through the speaker, "State your member id." "Buckley, 201-09-18." "Diaz, 201-09-19." A quick moment of silence, then, "What can The Green Carnation do for you today Mr. Buckley and Mr. Diaz?")

with buck now being canonically bisexual, let's talk about why i think eddie is going to be queer as well.

911 as a show has been queer from the beginning, and thus it has made some serious references to other media that's widely regarded as queercoded: fight club and top gun. the basketball scene in 7x04 is a clear reference to the volleyball scene in top gun. it's probably even meant to be a reference to it. most likely to establish buck's bisexuality. because lo and behold, academia has theorized for years that top gun is a movie about a bisexual man trying to repress his emotions for his male colleagues, by dating the woman he meets on the job. (seems familiar, doesn't it? there are more references to maverick in buck's portrayal, but that's for another post)

but what about eddie? literally - i, a queer person with college credits in film studies, saw his fight club arc in season 3 and clocked that man as gay. fight club has been argued to be a movie about queerness since it first came out - even before, when it was still just a book. the main argument for it is that the fight club is an excuse to touch naked men without embarrassment or guilt or homophobia. the men in fight club invent an excuse to be physically intimate - by being violent with each other. violence is a metaphor for physical intimacy. eddie talks about repressing his rage, which is why he falls into his fight club arc so hard. academia talks about fight club as an excuse to repress any emotion the protagonist doesn't want - depression, rage, self-hatred. all things that eddie also struggles with. so to go that one step further, eddie very much takes the place of the protagonist of fight club. thus being portrayed as somebody fighting instead of facing their internalized homophobia. because the only way they let themselves touch other men in an intimate way is to punch them.

so it's very easy to say, now that buck is free to explore his bisexuality, it's not even a leap to expect eddie to be able to do the same. both characters have been heavily foreshadowed to be queer throughout the series. so now's a good time to get on that.
