The Intersectionality of Queer Identity & Punk Rock

A Zine?

Yes, zine! Zines are like little pockets of subculture just waiting to be discovered. For me, they've been a constant source of fascination since my middle school emo days, when I first read Perks of Being a Wallflower. It was like finding a secret language, a way to express myself outside the mainstream. The Rocky Horror Picture Show and alternative music were my jam back then (and still are!) and discovering that zines could blend both worlds was utterly mind-blowing.

I delved deep into zine archives, soaking up inspiration from creators who came before me. I researched tirelessly, learning the ins and outs of zine-making, and honing my writing skills for the chance to contribute my own voice to this brilliant community. Suddenly, I had this platform where I could talk about everything I loved in one place. It wasn't just about sharing passions; it was about connecting with others who felt the same way, building a community of like-minded souls bound together by ink and paper. It was liberating!

Why did I choose this mode?

As stated before, zines bring together important conversations that people are passionate about. I am pulling from Perks of Being a Wallflower in the sense that I am bridging two concepts that are very close to my heart. As an as a self-described alternative queer man, I believe it is very important to remember where we came from, who came before us. This zine serves as an homage to the queer/alternative voices that came before me; however, this is not just for other queer or alternative individuals. This is for everyone. Regardless of politics, identity, or location, this zine is for you.

Where does Zine culture come from?

Zine culture, with its raw, unfiltered expression and grassroots ethos, finds its roots intertwined with the rise of punk music in the mid-1970s but can be traced all the way back to the early 1930s. Emerging as a response to the commercialization and homogenization of mainstream media, zines served as DIY platforms for individuals to share their thoughts, ideas, and creations in a tangible, accessible format.[x]

The DIY ethos embedded within zine culture finds its parallel in the punk movement. While previous musical genres such as skiffle and rock and roll also embraced DIY elements, it was punk that elevated the concept to a central tenet of its cultural and musical identity.[x] Punk rejected the polished, corporate-driven sound of mainstream music in favor of a raw, do-it-yourself approach that prioritized authenticity and individuality over commercial success.

In the face of state intervention and commercialization within the music industry, participants in alternative music scenes often embraced DIY as a form of resistance. By creating and disseminating their own zines, bands, artists, and activists asserted their independence from mainstream institutions and asserted their right to self-expression. This resistance was not merely a rejection of external forces but also a reclaiming of cultural autonomy and a celebration of DIY values.

Zine culture, therefore, emerges as a direct response to the limitations and shortcomings of mainstream media and culture. It represents a space where creativity knows no bounds, where voices that are often marginalized or silenced can find resonance and solidarity. In its simplicity and accessibility, zine culture embodies the spirit of punk's DIY ethic, offering a platform for self-expression and community-building that continues to thrive and evolve in the digital age.

Why are zines important?

Zines are vital conduits for self-expression, community building, and the preservation of alternative voices. Rooted in a rich history of resistance and creativity, zines offer a platform for individuals to share their thoughts, ideas, and creations outside the constraints of mainstream media. Emerging as a response to the homogenization and commercialization of traditional publishing, zines embody a rebellious spirit that champions authenticity and individuality.

Unlike glossy, corporate publications, zines are often cheaply made and readily accessible, democratizing the process of expression and inviting participation from individuals of all backgrounds. This accessibility not only empowers creators to share their stories but also fosters a sense of connection and camaraderie among like-minded individuals who share common interests and passions.

At its core, zine culture is about more than just printing; it's about building community and amplifying marginalized voices. By creating and sharing zines, creators forge connections with readers, sparking conversations and collaborations that transcend geographical boundaries. Zines serve as historical and cultural artifacts, documenting the experiences and perspectives of diverse communities, ensuring that alternative narratives are preserved and celebrated. In a world where mainstream media often overlooks or silences marginalized voices, zines offer a space for these voices to be heard, valued, and embraced.

The Basics

A subculture refers to a distinct group within a larger society that shares a set of beliefs, values, practices, and interests that deviate from mainstream culture. Subcultures are born out of a variety of social, cultural, and historical factors, often as a response to the perceived limitations or inadequacies of mainstream society. Dissatisfaction with societal norms and values can lead individuals or groups to seek out alternative spaces where they can express themselves authentically and find like-minded peers.

Subcultural groups often draw inspiration from existing cultural forms, such as music, fashion, art, and literature, which they reinterpret and repurpose to reflect their own distinct identities and sensibilities. This process of reclamation allows subcultures to create new meanings and symbols that resonate with their members, contributing to the evolution and diversification of subcultural identities.

Why punk?

In "Visual Vitriol" by David A. Ensminger, the author encapsulates the essence of punk rock as a refuge for those seeking a space to express themselves authentically. He reflects on the allure of punk, suggesting that many are drawn to it for the opportunity it provides to embrace a queer or unconventional identity comfortably. The quote from "INSIDE FRONT #13" captures this sentiment, highlighting punk as a haven for those who feel alienated from mainstream culture, offering a platform for self-expression without judgment.

Ensminger also acknowledges the significant influence of the LGBTQ+ community within punk. He asserts that "Gays shaped both the looks typifying punk and the history of punk music," recognizing the pivotal role of LGBTQ+ individuals in defining punk's aesthetic and its evolution as a cultural movement. This acknowledgment underscores the profound impact of queer individuals on the visual and musical elements that have become synonymous with punk. Punk 101

Its roots can be traced back to earlier musical movements such as garage rock, protopunk, and glam rock, which laid the groundwork for the aggressive, stripped-down sound that would later define punk. Bands like The Velvet Underground, The Stooges, MC5, and New York Dolls contributed to the development of this new musical aesthetic, characterized by its simplicity, urgency, and confrontational lyrics.

The early punk scene in New York City, centered around clubs like CBGB and Max's Kansas City, saw the emergence of pioneering bands like Ramones, Blondie, Talking Heads, and Patti Smith. The problematic past of punk history

Sanders, sheds light on the complex relationship between subcultures, societal norms, and the criminal justice system. Problematic Queercore Bands

Without naming any specific bands or groups, I think it is important to acknowledge the problematic side of Queercore. Just like punk rock, Queercore has its controversial and horrific sides. I believe it is crucial to acknowledge problematic Queercore bands as their actions and behavior can have significant consequences for the LGBTQ+ community and the broader punk scene. By shining a light on these issues, we can address harmful behaviors, challenge oppressive attitudes, and work towards creating safer and more inclusive spaces within the scene.

Acknowledging problematic behavior within Queercore bands helps hold them accountable for their actions. These bands may espouse values of inclusivity and acceptance, but if their actions contradict these principles or perpetuate harm, it's essential to call attention to it. Holding individuals and groups accountable for harmful behavior sends a message that such actions will not be tolerated and helps protect vulnerable members of the community. This allows for conversations about power dynamics, privilege, and accountability within the LGBTQ+ community itself. Just because someone identifies as queer does not absolve them of responsibility for harmful actions.

Being queer does not inherently make you anti-racist. Being queer does not inherently make you anti-fascist. Being queer does not inherently make you a feminist. Being queer does not inherently make you a person with good values.

Into the Mainstream

Despite the flaws of individual figures within the movement, Queercore's presence in the mainstream contributes to greater visibility and acceptance of LGBTQ+ identities. Just as Oscar Wilde's contributions to queer literature remain significant despite his personal flaws, Queercore bands play a vital role in amplifying queer voices and experiences. Their presence challenges mainstream narratives and provides a platform for LGBTQ+ individuals to express themselves authentically.

Queercore as Resistance

Queercore embodies a defiant rejection of mainstream expectations and norms regarding gender and sexuality. Its very existence challenges the notion that queer identities should be hidden or marginalized, instead asserting the right to visibility and self-expression.

At its core, Queercore disrupts dominant narratives by amplifying queer voices and experiences. Through music, zines, art, and DIY activism, it provides a platform for individuals to express their identities authentically, free from societal constraints. This radical self-expression is inherently political, challenging the status quo and demanding recognition and acceptance for all sexual orientations and gender identities.

homeless disabled trans person needs help affording more nights in hotel while government housing program keeps delaying my move in-date

3/11/2024: hello, my name is equinox. i am a homeless severely disabled trans person who is living in a hotel. i have been working with this apartment complex since october, working through a program for low-income severely disabled people who will provide me a rent figure based off of my earned income. because i sell jewelry and accept donations online, they are extremely confused as to how much income i make and have been stalling and delaying the process this entire time.

i was promised a move-in date of Tuesday, 2/27/2024, then 2/29/2024, only to have it pushed back yet again. i already set up the electricity in my name as they requested it of me on the 27th. it is march 11th, and i have no idea of when i will be approved, now.

today, i received this email:

i have given them this information several times over the past few months. i have explained that venmo does not generate statements, and that gofundme does not hold a balance. now i've had to explain that stripe also does not hold a balance, and that tumblr is not a payment gateway.

i have been in a hotel for over a month because of this. i have had to explain this information over and over again and have made no headway. i broke down crying this morning because this has been psychological torture. my hotel room is only $38/night. i have tonight booked, but will need help saving up for future nights, as well as the deposit and if i'm ever accepted at this place:

Well, we've got a collection of system neutral micro-settings called Odd Jobs - it's eleven small and fascinating worlds to play games in, each with a campaign you can play through in a month. They're not designed for any particular system, so you can play them with whatever game you like!

Oh, and it won the 2022 UK Games Expo award for Best Adventure and was nominated for Ennie Product of the Year. Just sayin'.

We've just released a tarot-themed magical river game called Upriver, Downriver with our dear friend Ella Watts, in which you play the crew of a ship sailing the Great River, either travelling upriver to the mythical Source with it's magic and revelation; or downriver towards the unending Sea with it's freedom and horizon.

We have KER-SPLAT! - a high-chaos, full nonsense cartoon RPG we wrote with Ross Barlow, where the players can't die and the GM can't stop them in a hilarious cascade of silly jokes. Also, not to brag, but this is the funniest RPG rulebook you'll ever read.

We also have smaller games, such as Zero Void - a no-prep one-shot zine game, where you play a bunch of desperate space criminals trying to escape a space station before the law arrives.

Well…. it’s been a fun time on the road with Malcolm & co. (@/theflamingcreatures) but in the months following the hoax and the death to glitter tribute I’ve been feeling more and more inclined to move on. idk. i know there’s still an active tumblr community but in the real life scene it feels like everyone’s just…. given up. I saw your post about ingram, and out of curiosity, is there some advantage to going through the whole self-publishing thing with retailers when you're just starting out? like I mean the way that fandom zines work is that they don't even bother going through ingram or amazon or whatever. they just set up a social media site (usually twitter) to gain followers, open preorders (usually 1-2 months in length) to generate the costs of printing upfront, and then sell anywhere from a few dozen to several hundred copies of their books (usually artbooks, but anthologies exist too). I've seen some zines generate over a thousand orders. they're kind of like pop-up shops, except for books. maybe the sales numbers aren't so impressive to a real author, but the profit generated is typically waaaay more than the $75+ apparently needed for Ingram Spark, so I still feel like new authors could benefit from this method too, especially if they just need some start-up cash to eventually move to ingram if they want to for subsequent runs of their book. I think authors would also have to set aside some of the pre-order money to buy an ISBN number to have printed on their book, and I'm not really sure what other differences there are, but I just wanted to ask about it in case there's some huge disadvantage I'm missing!

So, popup zines work well for some people, and I know some authors who kickstart their work successfully. But for a lot, it's just not feasible as a long-term stratedy. Or even as a means to get off the ground.

Fanzines succeed primarily because an existing fanbase is willing and ready to throw money at something they love. They’ve got a favorite writer or artist they want to support. Supporting all the others is just a happy by-product. They also take a HUGE amount of short-term but intense planning that just doesn’t always jive with how some of us work.

I, for one, would never offer to organize a fanzine. I’ll take part in them as a creator, but I’d rather throw myself off a cliff than subject myself to wrangling that many people and dealing with the legal logistics.

When it comes to authors doing anthologies, it'svery much the same. The success of the funding often hinges on having other big-name authors involved whose existing fans will prop up the project. Or having a huge marketing budget.

Most self-pub authors have zero marketing budget. I’m one of them, and I’m under no illusions that my work would not be as popular and self-sustaining as it is if I didn’t have a large Tumblr blog.

When I thank Tumblr in my forewards, I am utterly sincere. Tumblr brought fandom levels of enthusiasm to an unknown work and broke the Amazon algorithm so hard, that Amazon thought I was bot sniping my way to multiple #1 spots and froze my sales rankings.

That’s not the norm. And while I could probably kickstart my own work as an indie creator, that’s because I’ve put literal decades into building up a readership. I’ve been doing this since I was 16 and realized people thought I was funny. I didn’t know what to do with it or if I’d ever actually write anything, but it meant the groundwork was already there (thank you, past-me). I basically fell upward into my success by virtue of never being able to shut the fuck up and wanting to make people laugh. Clown instincts too strong.

New or first-time authors trying to sell their work without that will find it infinitely harder.

All of that aside, even if an unknown author somehow gets lucky and manages to fund their work, there’s still the question of shipping and distribution logistics. Are you shipping everything yourself? Better hope you’re able-bodied and have the time for it. (for reference, it took me months to ship out 300 patreon hardbacks because of my disabilites. It damaged my back and hands. I couldn’t type for several weeks after I was done.)

Are you going to sell primarily at conventions? Better hope you’re able-bodied, have the time and don’t have cripling anxiety about being in large groups...

Also, will selling a dozen to a few thousand copies in one burst be sustainable in the long run as a career? Not for me. Doing things via Ingram and Amazon means I earn a steady trickle of sales for the rest of my life provided the platforms remain and so long as I keep working and can generate interest in the series, not just when I have funds to pay for physical copies to sell. The one-time (in theory) cost of $75 to distribute through Ingram gets paid off pretty quick that way. And it doesn't require the same logistics as doing the popup/crowdfund.

Ultimately, it comes down to what you are capable of but also the type of work you’re doing. If you’ve got an extended network of fellow creatives who will back you or you’ve got a large following elsewhere, doing it like a popup might work for you.

If you’re an exhausted burnout who can’t fathom the short but intense amount of organization that sort of thing requires, not to mention doing it over and over and over... Ehhhhh. No thank you.

why did this even happen? minji asks herself, she's currently tending your cut on your palm. an argument between you happened earlier before dinner, she's supposed to get the ingredients at a nearby store, but instead she comes home holding two bags of chips and coke. was that the reason why she was all smiley before going off?

earlier...

"minji! what the hell did you buy?!" you say as you stood by the kitchen, eyeing the bags full of chips and bevarages and no sign of the ingredients you asked her to buy.

"you said buy something for tonight?" she asks back, putting down the bags and hanging her jacket.

"no. i said, ingredients for dinner tonight!" you reply, there's no way you'll be having what she bought.

"whatever, you're going to eat those for dinner and don't even dare to ask me for some of what i cooked." you pointed your index finger at her before walking off to cook.

now...

"you're so dumb sometimes." minji states while she wraps gauze around your palm. you glare at her.

"says the one who bought chips." you roll your eyes, then watching her take care of you wound with a small blush on your face, she looked so focused...

"hey- i only misheard." minji argues back, slapping your injured hand, seemingly forgotten that it's wounded.

"ow! what the heck?!" you retract your hand from minji, glaring at her while you soothe your poor hand.

"i'm sorry! i forgot." minji sighs.

"now look who's dumb." you laugh.

"oh, now look who can't cook." minji fought back and laughs as well.

"i'm not eating your chips." you roll your eyes.

"but you have nothing to eat." minji replies.

"then cook for me, idiot." she sighs and nodded in defeat, you smile and kissed her, now she's forgiven.

HANNI —

you both had an argument about her clean clothes and laundry. you thought the clothes on her bed were dirty and put them in the laundry, and it was unknown to you that she's going to use them later on their shoot of new jeans zine.

earlier...

"where are my clothes on the bed?" hanni asks, entering the living room where you are.

"oh, i put them in the laundry." you reply, looking up from your phone.

she groans and puts her hand on her head with a frustrated look on her face. "why would you put them in the laundry?!"

"i-i thought it's used and dirty.."

"why wouldn't you ask-!? ugh, forget about it." she walks out before you could speak, you sigh. well it's also her fault for putting them in the bed so messy.

now...

"are you okay?" hanni asks for about 30 times now, you lay on the couch clutching your side which has a big bruise.

good thing you haven't set the pile of laundry that has hanni's clothes in, rushing to get it, there was a piece of your clothing on the ground and you slipped because of it. landing on your side, you groan in pain and the next thing you see is hanni rushing to you with a worried face.

"yes, i'm fine now hanni, thank you for asking." after you said that, your side aches and you clutch it in pain, another reason for hann to be worried again. she slaps your hand away and lifted your clothes up to check your side, gasping when she saw a big purple bruise.

following her eyes, you gasp as well. "do you think it's a broke bone?" you ask, getting scared now, you're definitely not okay. she sighs in relief when she just misread tha date today and there was no filming, she has to take you to the hospital now.

DANIELLE —

she never starts the argument, she gets scolds by you, it was raining outside and the girl decided to shine her light outside and play outside like a little kid. but you said something that really hurt her. rushing to her room, you follow behind, saying a lot of sorrys.

SLAM-! THUD!

you fell down, holding your head after you groan in pain. danielle didn't know you were, that, close to her door and she accidentally slammed it too hard.

"are you okay?! i'm sorry.." she asks multiple times, her hands fly everywhere, not knowing what to do.

she hugs your head, but every minute passes, the bruise forming on your forehead gets worse. danielle panics once more, reaching for your hand and helps you stand up, leading you to the kitchen.

danielle took some ice from the refrigerator and wrapped them around her precious handkerchief and held it against your bruise gently, she was so worried but at the same time guilty.

"i'm so sorry... i didn't mean too..." she whispers, her lips quivering. you look up to her with a small smile through the pain.

"it's okay, i'm sorry too, baby." you held her hand, took the ice and aid yourself. before she can reply, she sneezes, you sigh.

"i told you not to go outside, it's raining." you chuckled and ruffled her damp hair.

"but it's nothing compared to your bruise..." she sniffles, pouting.

"it's okay, really. i just don't want you sick." you hug her, and you both watched as the rain falls outside your kitchen window.

HAERIN —

you sat on the floor, checking your wounded knee, she stood in front of you in silence. you bleed from the cut on your knee, because you were following after haerin as she walks to her room to avoid the argument. but while you do so, a sharp edge of an object wounded your knee.

haerin stood there is shock, not knowing what to do, shaky eyes stare at the blood dripping from your leg. her unsteady legs kneels down beside you.

"i'm sorry.." she silently says, looking at you from the side. she's apologising even if it's not her fault? poor girl.

"no, no, don't apologise. it's not your fault." you reassure, holding her hand tightly as you endure the pain.

"i-if i didn't try to go back. you wouldn't have gotten injured." she mumbles, looking at your knee and back to you.

"no, haerin, it's fine. i can just bandage it up." you struggled to stand up, but a pair of hands helps you up to the kitchen.

"look, i'm sorry for what i've said earlier. i know you were tired." you spoke, caressing haerin's cheek with a weak smile. besides it's better to have a cut than continue the argument and you'll hurt haerin more. seeing her cry hurts more than a wound.

haerin nods, "it's okay... but let's worry about your wound? yeah?" she made you sit down as she kneels to bandage your knee.

feeling so guilty and thinking you got this wound because of her, even if it's not, she can't help but feel that way :( like minji, she's very focused on aiding you, but winces when she presses too hard that your wound gushes out blood. so sad about it, her eyes won't even leave it for a few seconds. very careful about it, reminding you not to put too much pressure on your knee :(

HYEIN —

earlier...

again, you scold her for the 3rd time of the day, was very picky about her food and acts very dramatic. telling you that she doesn't want to eat anymore and storms to her room. sighing, but still, you went to the kitchen to cook some food for you and her later, just incase she gets hungry. plus you won't let her starve because of a stupid argument. knocking on her door for a few times, asking what she wants, she just tells you to go because she'll just order her own food.

now...

she finally exits her room with her phone in hand, ignoring you on the living room while she pays and takes the food she ordered. placing it down the coffee table, she noticed that you're wrapping gauze around your three fingers. her face turning into a worry mess.

"what happened?" she quickly sits down beside you, takes your hand and helped you with the gauze. glancing up at you, you were avoiding her eyes.

"i got cut, while cooking." your face flushes in embarrassment, after being so professional and bragging about your cooking skills, you got cut? eh, it's part of the cooking life anyways. hyein lets out a breathy chuckle, cupping your cheek.

"don't be embarrassed, it's okay. i just ordered food for us, you don't have to worry about anything related to food." hyein pats your palm, indicating she was done with the bandaging. she motioned to the bag of food on the coffee table, handing yours and taking her own. it's good to see her happy again, and not so mean, like earlier.

The Masquerade Breach Zine

Hi I am ProblemSynth also known as Zeke. I’m a bi-transmasc artist and occasional writer with a love of vampires and VTM. I am also making the (probably terrible) choice to set up a free community zine for the first time.

Overview

Masquerade Breach is a free community E-Zine for enjoyers of the Vampire The Masquerade games and media. The theme of this project is the violation of the “Masquerade” and the various ways kindred breach it.

While the focus is largely on vampires, you’re invited to interpret the theme not just through the eyes of kindred but also through the eyes of mortals and hunters.

There is currently a soft limit of 30 applicants with those applying after entering a wait list in the event of drop outs.

Goals

The aim of this project is to collect pictures and short stories from the community in one place, and give it back in the form of a free printable PDF.

This zine will be distributed largely through tumblr and the discord with links to the PDF on Google Drive. Links to the social media(s) of participants will be shown alongside the tumblr and Discord posts.

I will be pinning this post to my blog for reference.

As this is my first public Zine I expect some hiccups along the way. I will do by best to communicate when they happen via tumblr, discord, and dms (when necessary). Please be a little patient with me as I work things out.

hi its ly, the aftg zine guy. after the success of the mxtx gotcha for gaza projects and other fandoms running some, I'm looking for thoughts on running an aftg gotcha for gaza!

please spread the word if you can, I'll set up official things if there's enough interest from this tumblr poll. feel free to message if you'd like to help organize as well.

for those wondering what this entails: basically creators sign up to participate then people can submit prompts (this includes any ship, content, etc) by donating specific small amounts (ie $5) to specific palestine focused organizations, funds, etc! there would ideally be one week for creator sign ups, 1-2 weeks for donations, and then 2ish weeks afterwards for finishing creations. I participated in the TGCF one which sort of set this in motion and has good info about it and others actively happening!

Modern Draconity: A Draconic Zine || Info Doc

Summary

Draconity isn’t solely from ages past, but something that still burns bright in the modern age. This zine will be a collection of pieces created by nonhumans and alterhumans about what it means to be draconic in the present day (or even future). Also, this zine imposes no set definition on what is or isn’t “dragon enough.” If you feel like the label applies, we want to hear from you!

What Can I Submit?

Both fiction and nonfiction pieces are accepted. As long as what you have in mind fits the theme, it’ll probably be a-ok.

Off the top of our head, we’re thinking of:

Essays of your personal experiences

Short stories

Poetry

Mock advice columns

Alternative covers

Fictional advertisements

Comics

Recipes

We welcome you to think outside the box and dig into what it really means to be draconic in the modern era!

How to Participate

Please email your completed submission to ruffledgryphgon(@)gmail(.)com and title the email “Modern Draconity Submission.” Also make sure to include the following information in your email:

A name you would like the piece attributed to

Title of your submission

Any content warnings that you feel are necessary for the piece

Any social media handle or personal website you'd like linked in the contributor section

A logo or icon for the contributor section

**If you would like to stay anonymous let us know

Members of systems are welcome to submit individually or collectively. Please let us know your preference when it comes to attribution.

Once the deadline has passed, these submissions will be put into the zine and it will be posted on itch.io as a free PDF.

Submissions are due by October 31th, 2023.

Submission Guidelines

Each individual may submit up to 3 works to be featured in Modern Draconity. Comics and multi-image works count as one piece. Individuals within a system may each submit up to 3 works. All work must be your own! Anyone caught plagiarizing or submitting AI-generated work will be barred from entering Modern Draconity and any future zines from us.

Written submissions should not exceed 30 pages and multi-part art entries should not exceed 10 pages. Please keep in mind the zine’s pages will be 8.5x11 and entries will be scaled accordingly to fit that size. We request all art submissions to be sent in either .jpg or .png file formats.

For stories that use multiple different fonts, we will do our best to preserve the general "feel" of your piece but cannot guarantee we will be able to use the exact fonts or sizes due to restrictions in what fonts we have access to, readability and overarching zine style.

FAQ

Q: Where will the zine be hosted? What will it cost? A: The zine will be hosted digitally on our itch.io and will be free to download.

Q: Is there a cap on submissions? A: There is none, as long as the file doesn’t start getting too big for our computer we’ll do our best! If there are an unprecedented amount of submissions, we may have to delay the release. In the event that happens, we would communicate that through updates on our tumblr.

Q: Can I update my application after it’s been submitted? A: Yes you may, as long as that is communicated to us before the submission deadline.

Q: Can I rescind my submission? A: Yes you may, as long as that is communicated to us before the submission deadline. This is because once we begin work on the zine, having to remove content mid-way through would throw off the formatting of everything else after. Please take this into account before submitting.

Q: Will this zine allow NSFW entries? A: No, nothing 18+ will be accepted.

Q: What is your timeline for the project? A: Our submission deadline is October 31, 2023. We are then planning to spend the next month or so compiling all of the entries. Our goal is to have the zine live by the end of the year. If something unforeseen happens and we are unable to make that deadline, we will post an update about it on our tumblr.

ZINE FAQ

General Questions:

What is a fanzine? - A fanzine is a little magazine made up of contributions from fans of a certain series/show/sport/whatever. In this case, "The Reason is You" is a zine focused around Spiderbit/Guapoduo, and it'll have people contributing from all over the globe!

What is this zine about? - This zine is specifically about Guapoduo as they are on the QSMP Minecraft Server. That is to say: a canon setting with canon relationship dynamics.

Can we include Obsessedduo/Devotionduo/Mafiaduo/the Guapoverse? - Unfortunately, not this time. This zine focuses specifically on their canon relationship. You don't have to write specifically about canon events like the wedding or Festa Junina, and you can include just about any headcanon you like- Catboy Cellbit, Spider-Roier, Trans Headcanons, etc- but it will be set within the canon setting.

Is this zine related to [Insert Fandom Event/Zine Here]? - Nope, this is a standalone project, but those other things sure sound cool!

How old do I have to be to apply? - Technically you can be any age, but what will actually matter is the portfolio you'll be submitting on the application. Unfortunately there will be a bias towards experience, but don't let that get you down! Feel free to try, you never know!

When will the applications go out? - The actual applications will go out as soon as they're finished being written and translated into Spanish and Portuguese, so give us a week or two. They WILL be out by the end of April, though.

When will we know if we got in? - Since we're expecting over 100 applications, it'll take us a minute to go through them all and decide who gets in! It'll depend on exactly how many applications we get, but we're anticipating reaching out to contributors via email sometime in early May.

How will we know if we got in? - On the application, you'll be giving us your email address. If you get in, you'll get an email from us with the discord server's link and a big ol' Parabens!!!

Do we have to have both a Twitter and a Tumblr? - Nope! Not necessary, just come with what you've got!

Do we have to have a Discord account? - Yes! After emails are sent, it will be mandatory for all admins, guests, and contributors to be part of the Discord server for the project. You won't need to be online every day, but you will need to have @ notifications turned on, and you'll need to be open to receiving dms from admins when it comes to check-ins.

What is the zine's exact schedule? - We're actually finalizing the dates as I write this post, and we'll keep you guys updated. Because of the bug impacting our collective ability to enter Twitter, the project may have to be pushed back a week or so just to keep things even. We're having to adjust for that. But we WILL get a schedule out ASAP, and it will be before the applications go live.

Will we have to do anything in November as contributors? What do you mean by it "ending" in November? - The way the schedule is currently projected, writers and artists will actually be done with their work around the end of August/beginning of September. After that, translators will have September and October to translate. Then, the people helping put everything together into the zine proper (graphic designers, admins, etc.) will be working through the end of October into November to finalize things and get the zine out by the end of November.

What do you mean by "applications", anyway? Do we have to try out for this zine? - In order to keep things fair, we're going to have people apply to be in the zine. This will eliminate bias and keep us admins from just letting Big Creators and Our Friends in. This way, everybody has an equal shot!

What do you mean by "writer and artist collaborations"? - The way these would work is that we the admins would pair together a writer and an artist who both indicated in their applications that they would be cool with a collaboration with a random person. After matching them together, we'd tell them in their emails that they're working with each other. From there, they'd come up with a concept together, and the writer would write it and the artist would Art it. The specifics would be up to them.

Are collaborations mandatory? - Nope! There will be an option on the applications that tell us whether or not you want to do a collaboration. It's totally optional.

Are we only working with people we share a language with? - While we might stick, say, two Portuguese speakers together for easier communication when it comes to collaborations, the zine will be made up of people from all over the globe speaking all sorts of languages! The discord server comes with a translation bot in it and everything.

Will there be merchandise? (Ex: wallpapers, icons, physical merchandise) - Unfortunately, no. This will be a free zine, and we will not be accepting personal donations from readers or contributors. This is for several reasons, but the most important reason is that it's for Legal Reasons. We don't own the copyrights to these characters or the QSMP Server, and we don't feel comfortable profiting off of them.

Then how can we pay for the zine? - You don't! BUT, if it can be worked out properly, there will be an option to donate what you want to a charity of our choice. If you want to pay for this zine, just pay what you would want to to that charity when the time comes.

Will there be a physical version of the zine? - Nope! This is a digital zine only. It will be released via pdf and maybe epub for anybody to download for free. This is for cost reasons, yes, but also because we want anybody anywhere to be able to read this zine regardless of whether or not they can afford international shipping.

Writer Questions

What am I supposed to write? - Pretty much anything you like as long as it's set within canon! No need to stick with actual events, again, just no crazy AU stuff. If you have specific questions, you can ask an admin once the writing process begins in May.

What is the word count? - Writers will be expected to write within a range of 1,000 to 3,000 words, but allowances will be made for more or less upon discussion with an admin.

Will poetry be allowed? - Sure! Any kind of writing will be allowed, just have it in your portfolio when you apply.

What do you mean "portfolio"? - When you fill out the application, you will be asked to submit 2-3 previous works. Threadfics, Wattpad fics, Ao3 links, whatever it is! The will be more details within the application itself, don't worry.

Do we have to write in English? - Nope! Write in your native language... but I will say that there will only be translations for English, Spanish, and Portuguese. We'd love to have, say, a German or French translation, but we only have so much manpower, and we don't want translators working overtime for free.

Artist Questions

What kinds of art are allowed in the zine? - Any kind of art! It can be digital or traditional. As long as you can provide a clear and clean scan/photo of any traditional work and provide that to the admins when the time comes, it'll be fine!

What about non-traditional artworks? (Ex: crochet, sculptures) - That's all fine! Again, just give us a clear photo, and it's fine!

Do we have to draw Guapoduo themselves? Or can we draw things related to them? - As long as it relates back to Guapoduo as a focus, it's fine. So you can draw a landscape of, say, Cellbit's Castle or the wedding venue.

What will be on our applications? - Just like writers, you'll be asked to provide a portfolio of 2-3 previous works. More information will be on the applications themselves.

Translator Questions

What will our schedule look like? - As mentioned earlier, you won't be doing too much work until the last bit of the zine's creation. Don't sweat it.

What languages will we be translating from/to? - The three languages the zine will be translated into are English, Spanish, and Portuguese. To be a translator, you'll need to have a level of fluency in at least two of these languages.

What will be on our application? - You can provide a portfolio if you have experience with translating, but there will also be a little bit of a test on your applications. If all goes according to plan, you'll indicate what language you would like to translate from and then into, and you'll then be given a passage to translate. That translation will then be checked by our admin team.

Do we need heavy translation experience? - Not necessarily, but, again, there will be a test on the application. It's just a necessary precaution.

Graphic Designer Questions

What do you mean by "graphic designer", exactly? - By this, we're talking about someone who knows how to do page layouts. We're gonna need your help putting the zine together and then exporting it in a pdf. (Like, Adobe InDesign type of stuff.)

What will be on our application? - Again, a portfolio will be required. For this, we won't require as many pieces, though. As long as you can prove you know how to use programs that can Make Book, or as long as you can show your expertise in page layout and management, we're good.
