How TWST characters would react to getting money for New Year

Author's note: I originally wrote this around January 1st and intended to post it at that time. However, I never had the chance to finish, as I was too busy actually celebrating New Year's Day with my family. Luckily, the Lunar New Year has rolled around, so I have another chance to post this!

🧧🎊Some fun facts about this tradition: 🎍🎉

New Year's Day, or お正月 ("oshogatsu") is the biggest holiday of the year in Japan. Since most Japanese children aren't given their own allowances, getting an envelope of money from your relatives is a big deal. This tradition is called お年玉 ("otoshidama"). At this time of year, there also tends to be a lot of sales, hence the New Year Sale event in the game. Of course, if your parents are like mine, your money goes towards your education instead of toys, lol.

I grew up in an area with a large Chinese population, so sometimes I would also get red envelopes on Lunar New Year from family friends. However, the typical money envelopes in Japan, which are called "pochibukuro" are usually white. They tend to feature patterns with images such as daruma dolls, ribbons, origami, popular childrens' characters, or the yearly Zodiac animal.

Pochibukuro are usually given by adults to children to symbolize good luck and to thank them for their hard work over the past year. However, we're going to imagine a scenario in which you give the TWST boys money for fun.

If you also have special traditions on January 1st or Lunar New Year, whether in Japan, China, Vietnam, or another country, please let me know what they are! Also, if you'd like to buy some pochibukuro of your own, you can find them at shops such as Daiso or Kinokuniya.

Heartslabyul

Riddle Rosehearts: He would be surprised by the idea of receiving such a gift, and would thank you profusely. He would likely save the money for something in the future like medical school expenses or textbooks, but he would keep the envelope as a bookmark to remember your kindness.

*I like to headcanon that Riddle is of Japanese descent on one side of his family. At some point, maybe one of his relatives gave him something for New Year's, but his mother stored it away for "safekeeping." At NRC, when he meets you, he has a chance to hold onto his own money. Maybe he'd even indulge just a little, and buy himself a strawberry tart or two.

Ace Trappola: He'll shamelessly spend it all that day, but at least he'd buy something high-quality and useful, like some shoes or a new basketball.

Deuce Spade: Like in Chapter 6, Deuce would likely say something about how he'd like to give the money to his mother. "But this is for you," you would say. "Spend it on something you like." In that case, he'd buy a snack at the mall or a new shirt. He'd also buy you something small in exchange.

Trey Clover: It's hard to imagine what Trey would spend his money on...maybe a new hat, a fancy kitchen set, or a motorized toothbrush. He'd probably ask about where to get money envelopes so that he could get some for his younger siblings.

Cater Diamond: He would probably hug you if you gave him such a gift. I imagine that he has been looking forward to all the sales on New Year's Day and has been looking forward to buying trendy new clothes and accessories. Maybe he'd even bring you along.

Savanaclaw

Leona Kingscholar: Why are you giving money to a prince?! Leona has no need for this little herbivore tradition, but he'd at least thank you. He'd also misplace the envelope before he could spend it, but he probably wouldn't be bothered.

Ruggie Bucchi: Luckily, Ruggie would find Leona's missing otoshidama. Finder's keepers? There's about a million things Ruggie would like to buy, but he'd probably end up using the money for household things like laundry detergent and toilet paper. Leona would most likely keep his, in addition to the envelope that you give him.

Jack Howl: Jack may be surprised to get such a gift and have a hard time accepting it from you until he understands that it is tradition. Like Ace, he would make sure to spend it on something practical, such as workout clothes, but he'd also buy a few cacti--and maybe give you one as well.

Octavinelle

Azul Ashengrotto: A tradition...involving free money? Say no more. Like Jack, Azul would say he has a hard time accepting such a gift, but it is a clear façade. Deep down, he'd be delighted that you thought of him. He'd likely save the money for the Mostro Lounge's expenses, or he would treat himself to a new book or fancy skincare. He'd also try to take Floyd's and hold onto it before he spends it recklessly. Maybe he'd feel as if he'd owe you something as well, which is a feeling he hates.

Jade Leech: Jade would act like Azul, except he is better at hiding his delight. He might even scare you a little while asking whether he owes you money in return! As for what he spends it on...who knows? (My guess is a tea set, a fancy knife set for threatening people the Mostro Lounge, or some new hiking gear).

Floyd Leech: Giving Floyd money is like freeing every animal from the zoo and unleashing them at the mall. He'd most likely ransack the shoe stores first, but he'd also wreak havoc at the arcades and toy stores.

Scarabia

Kalim Al-Asim: Again, why are you giving the richest people at NRC money?! Kalim would be intrigued and would want to adopt this tradition, giving his money to everyone, young and old. He’d probably be like Trey and try to get some envelopes for his siblings, too. Honestly, though, you’re better off giving the money to Jamil, because like Leona, Kalim is definitely going to misplace that envelope.

Jamil Viper: Hmmm, this one is difficult. He’d probably take it with hesitation, asking whether you’re trying to bribe him or if there’s something you’re asking from him. Once he realizes that you’re being sincere and that the money is actually for him, he’d likely save it in a secret bank account. I imagine that he has some money saved for if ever he has a chance to leave the Asim family, even if just temporarily. After all, money is power, and anything he can get would make a difference. Don’t worry Jamil—the world awaits you!

Pomefiore

Vil Schoenheit: Vil is a smart man—he has likely heard of these traditions before after working with actors from different countries and watching movies. Although he may be a bit baffled at being on the recieving end of an otoshidama, he’d instantly reciprocate by giving you traditional deserts, like a box of mochi wrapped in tasteful wrapping paper.

Rook Hunt: You wouldn’t even have a chance to speak, let alone actually show him what you have. The (one-sided) conversation would go something like this: “Trickster, arrête! What is that in your pocket, hmm? An envelope with my name on it? Judging by the weight, you’ve given me about one thousand madol* for New Year. C’est bon, merci! Alas, I know not what to do with it. I would purchase something beautiful to look at all year, but true beauty is something you behold, free in nature. I know! The true beauty is your thoughtfulness! Merci beaucoup!”

*I assumed that madol/thaumarks are equivalent to Japanese yen, so that’s about 1,000円, or roughly $10 USD. That's really not a lot of money, but hey, you're just a college student, and you have 22 classmates. I think the conversion rate depends on the translation, though, as the ENG version of the event implies that the currency is closer to USD/GBP/Euro instead.

Epel Felmier: Epel is the type of kid who has been raised around older folks, and not a lot of kids his own age. I like to imagine that he would visit his neighbor's farms and help them with chores, and they'd give him pocket money in exchange. If you gave him a money envelope, he would be reminded of his hometown and probably send some of the money to his grandmother (he's a good kid). Otherwise, I think the boy would benefit from getting some new athletic wear.

Ignihyde

Idia and Ortho Shroud: Like Vil, Idia has probably heard of this tradition from watching anime/donghua or reading about it somewhere, but he'd still be caught off-guard by receiving one, feeling every emotion from flustered to excited. While Idia would go on a full-speed rant about how he wants to spend his money on this and that, Ortho would thank you politely. The two brothers are very close, so I'd imagine that they'd combine their money to buy something that they would use together, like a two-player game, manga from a series that they both like, or merchandise of characters from their favorite gacha game.

Diasomnia

Malleus Draconia: Before giving him a money envelope, you greet Malleus with a "Happy Year of the Dragon!" Malleus proceeds to lecture you about the difference between dragons and longs (or 龍/"ryuu" in Japanese) again, but in a lighthearted way. Like Riddle, he is not used to receiving gifts. However, he is a very sentimental person, and would probably keep the pochibukuro in a special place, just to admire the shiny golden long on the envelope every once in a while. He wouldn't even realize that there's money inside until Lilia tells him about it.

*Yet another side note: I am once again begging the TWST developers to make a special Year of the Dragon card for Malleus (the next time they'll have this opportunity is in twelve years!!!). I know he'll eventually get a New Year's Sale card, and already had Qing Dynasty-style clothing for the Halloween event, but I really, really want to see him wearing hanfu.

Sebek Zigvolt: Sebek was secretly waiting for this day because he also knows that it is the Year of the Dragon, and is leaping at the chance to celebrate his liege again. In fact, I'm sure he has already gone all-out in decking the Diasomnia dorm in dragon/long/ryuu-themed decorations. He would still be genuinely excited to receive money envelopes, and tell you about how Lilia used to give them to him and Silver as children. He would then remark that although you're a human, you clearly know your stuff, and thus have the honor of being invited to the party he is throwing.

Silver (Vanrouge): Of course, Silver was dragged into planning the party with Sebek, but he's enjoying it as well. He'd accept your money envelope graciously and tell you about how it reminds him of his father doing the same thing when he and Sebek were children, as well as other stories he heard about his father's travels in The East. I like to imagine that you'd talk for a while with him while standing in the kitchen, preparing kagami mochi and soba, and desperately trying to keep Lilia out of the kitchen.

Lilia Vanrouge: Lilia has always been on the giving end and never on the receiving end of the money envelopes--after all, he is...quite elderly, and people usually give money envelopes to those younger than them. But who knows? I gave my grandmother a money envelope once, and it was fun. Knowing Lilia, he'd probably tease you, saying, "Yes, indeed, I am a very youthful boy!" Of course, Grandpa Lilia won't let you leave empty-handed. He'll give you your very own overfilled pochibukuro too, and won't let you go until you've had some of his special, homemade, traditional New Year's cooking! (Good luck.)

(Billy Hargrove x Gender-Neutral Reader)

“What did you just call me?” Billy stared at you, eyes wide as if you had insulted him.

You were having a quiet day in, the TV on low in the background as you sat with a book in your lap.

You giggled. “An Aries.”

“The hell is that?” He seemed to relax at your smile. At least you weren’t mad at him.

“It’s your astrological sign. You’re an Aries because you were born March 29th,” you said, tapping the date in your book.

“So, what are you then?” He tilted his chin, indicating toward the pages.

You told him, and he nodded as if he understood, but you could see the lost look in his eyes.

“You’re a pretty textbook Aries, actually. And a bit of a softie.” You pecked his cheek, pulling your legs up on the couch.

He rolled his eyes. “I think I’m gonna regret asking this, but ‘textbook’ how?”

“Well, Aries are fire signs,” you started.

“Makes sense,” he said with a nod.

“Oh? Why’s that?” You tilted your head, already suspecting where he was going.

He gestured up and down himself with an “are you serious” look.

You rolled your eyes and shook your head slightly. You knew it.

“Fire’s hot,” he said as if you weren’t getting it.

“I know, Billy.” You bit the inside of your cheek.

“I’m hot.”

You pushed his arm with a giggle. “Yeah, I got that.”

He grabbed your wrist and pulled you closer, so he could tuck you beneath his arm.

“Our signs also have good compatibility,” you added.

He huffed. “Don’t need to know astrology to know that.”

You smiled, leaning further into him. You took his hand into both of yours and traced his palm until you reached the ring on his middle finger. A thick silver band with a tiny blue stone set into it.

“Your birthstone is aquamarine.” You twisted the band until the stone was facing up.

“That why you got this for me?”

It’d been a birthday gift. You’d spotted it at the thrift store and purchased it right away.

You shook your head. “It actually reminded me of your eyes.”

He hummed, lifting your head to brush his lips to yours.

“Tell me more,” he whispered against your mouth.

You cleared your throat, opting to settle back into his chest so you could regain some composure.

“You’re a born leader,” you said.

His thumb rubbed your shoulder, steady and sure.

“You’re passionate and spontaneous.”

Billy always whisked you away somewhere. If you were out with friends, he’d take your hand and lead you to a secluded spot ‘cause he “hadn’t kissed you in forever.”

He’d show up at your front door unannounced with a handful of wildflowers he found and take you for a drive around town. You’d stop for milkshakes and end up snuggled in his backseat.

You were always a little shy when he showed up at your work. If you weren’t at the counter, Steve or Robin would direct him to wherever you were in the store. When he found you, he’d spin you to face him, cup your cheeks, and kiss you as if he hadn’t seen you in years. You were sure each time your heart would give out from the intensity.

“What else?” His nose nudged your temple.

You bit your lip, wondering if you should say this next part.

“Well, there’s also the Chinese zodiac. And that’s based on the year you were born and given an animal,” you said.

“Oh? S’gotta be a tiger or a dragon, right?” he asked, a hint of excitement in his voice.

“The Year of the Goat,” you said, giggling when his shoulders dropped.

“Really?”

You nodded. “It fits—a little stubborn,” you teased. “Can eat almost anything.”

“Yeah, okay.” He rolled his eyes again.

You pursed your lips, trying to hide your growing smile at the thought you just had.

“What?”

You grinned, tapping his chin.

“My little Billy goat.”

“Oh, that’s it!”

He lunged, pinning you to the couch, hands on either side of your head as he sat on top of you.

“Keep teasing, baby. See where that gets you.” The glint in his eyes was hopeful like he wanted you to cross that line so he could have his way.

You gripped both his wrists, circling your thumbs along the inside.

“The bedroom, I hope.” You waited a moment before sealing your fate. “Billy goat.”

He laughed through his nose, looked to the side, then back at you.

“You asked for it.”

He sunk his fingers into your thighs, and you had just enough time to wrap your arms around his neck before he lifted you.

“Maybe if I show you some fire, you’ll think twice before callin’ me that again.”

He didn’t mind it, and you knew that.

It just meant he’d have to drown you in that heat.

And after, he hoped you continued to play with fire.

This is going to be a really long post about my recent studies with character design, proportions, and improving other skills.

These are some drawings from my studies that I discuss below

It started when I picked Dragon/Olivia's story back up. To give some context about this character, she's a character I made along with 11 others that matched with the Chinese zodiacs (as we all have at some point I'm sure). I initially gifted her and the rest of the characters to my friend, so she had some character to write for. I've since asked if I could work on her story again and we work together with the setting for story congruency.

This kinda takes me to my current studies which is that I want to make interesting characters with appeal. I came into Dragon's redesign with some new tips from youtube about art appeal, specifically: Appeal - The MAGIC Tool to Improve Your Characters After watching that, I'd come faced with a long problem I've had in my art which is proportions, the bane of all artist. I remembered a rule that I've always chosen not to listen to for god knows what reason, the rule of heads (9 heads is like the proportion of a persons body blah blah yall know this one). I'm more of a "just get good" kinda person and prefer not to measure things as I get lost in them later in the piece.

I tested it out here as like a side by side to see how I normally draw, from imagination, just raw dogging it, and then did another drawing trying to incorporate the measurements and I realized how much I sucked at drawing then.

I looped back around to a character that I've had for a long time, oldies are the goodies, Brook, who I always seemed to draw with a head slightly to big for his body. I think this was a crutch at some point, I think the design may have gave him an innocent look that I've always visualized. So I was having fun making him actually look like a 20 something year old then a teenager.

Eventually I circled back to Olivia and began working on her design with a little more confidence. When I initially made Dragon and all of the other zodiacs, I had big ideas of making their silhouettes easy to read and to show off their character.

My old crutch, as many share with me, was having different hair styles. You can see that between Jace and Brook who look very similar, but rock different hairstyles.

This was a bit ago trying to work on that problem, trying to distinguish them with their body types because the story kinda supports them looking the same. I decided to work with shape language to accomplish that.

At the same time as those drawings, I was making characters for my animatic called Unicorn Hunters (you can watch that there). Taking a break from that project, I drew those characters in an alternate universe where they're just alt kids.

Anyways, art is hard and I wanted to post this mainly for myself because I always forget the little steps like this that keeps my art in line.

Fruits basket au could be mixed with housebroken or not where when every child gets a gift it comes also with a curse. (The curse is meant to keep them humble) they turn into animal/animal people. I researched for zodiac signs that aren't the Chinese. For Bruno, Julieta and Pepa they're Libras. Bruno becomes a raven, Julieta a Bunny and Pepa a grey wolf, Scorpio Luisa becomes an Eagle, Gemini Antonio becomes a panther cub, Leo Isabela becomes a peacock which is humbling since female peacocks are plain looking, Virgo Dolores becomes a Fox, pisces Mirabel becomes a crow, and Capricorn Camilo becomes a Squirrel.

What triggers them to change into animals is if they're overly stressed or sick or hugged by the opposite sex. They're able to hug those who are in the family or have the curses. Though if Agustin hugged Pepa or Dolores they would turn into their animals and the same if Felix hugged any of his nieces or Julieta. The curse has mercy by allowing married couples to become immune to the curse so they can be embraced. Alma is able to hug since she's a relative.

While the triplets only got their curse after they were gifted, nobody realized they were cursed until the first time they got stressed out. Mirabel was the only one to get a curse while not getting a door. It indicated for the family that Mirabel probably had a gift, they just didn't know what it was or why she didn't get a room

I haven’t watched Fruits Basket yet, but I have seen a ton of clips and kind of??? Have a grip on the basic plot. ANYWAY. I think this is a cool idea! Again, I really need to get around to watching it, but from what I’ve seen, I think this would be like, super awesome????

Love languages were made up by Conservative Evangelicals to sell more books about not getting divorced. The reason y’all even know about them is because the incredibly homophobic group Focus on the Family marketed the shit out of the books and they became a popular replacement for couples’ therapy. The idea literally comes from a place of hand-wringing over divorce rates increasing.

The entire point of there being “different languages” is to get couples in the mindset of “well there’s just an insuperable language barrier.” Like, you’re literally supposed to think “Rather than work on communication and telling each other what we want/expect, we just have to accept that interacting with each other is like trying to tell someone who only speaks Chinese something in English. Ho hum, can’t blame anyone for my unhappiness, especially not the man.”

So, like. Just say you like hugs, or kisses, or gifts, or whatever. Lots of people like those things, and lots of people like multiple things. Some of y’all treat “love languages” like it’s some immutable zodiac sign for your romantic personality and it’s actually not a good mindset for thinking about relationships and communication.

What type of milk do you like to drink? We normally just buy full fat milk but I like Jersey milk too, it's just so expensive and doesn't seem to last long. I also get oat milk for coffees as it makes them taste a bit more interesting.

Do you have a first aid kit at home? Yeah, there are two at home. I need to get a travel one actually as mine has mostly run out of everything useful.

What’s the absolute bare minimum in terms of facilities when you’re camping? I would never go camping lol.

How many places have you lived in your life? Two countries, eleven homes.

Are your parents dog or cat people? Is that different or the same as you? My parents aren't really pet people at all. My mum is asthmatic so they can't have pets anyway. I have a dog and three cats.

What’s the longest your hair has ever been? How long is it now? About bra length. It's currently just below my shoulders.

Are there sounds that bother you on a visceral level? Yeah - cutlery on plates is the main one, as well as tapping, humming and tuneless whistling.

What was the last thing you bought online? Kitten food, I think.

Have you taken a walk today? Did you see any dogs? No, I haven't been out at all today. I did see a dog though.

Does your family have any traditions or rituals? Sure, I think that's pretty normal.

If you could learn any language, what would it be? I'd improve my Italian, I think.

Why is this Element Significant to you? This element is significant to me Nostalgic aroma. Underlying holistic approach/beliefs in treating physical health, which is a similar approach in how I encounter in research.

mountain of strength. gift from god. right fist (when spelled “poindexter”). first of the name.

aeron had no opinion until someone on twitter asked and he got caught up in a tweet storm when both sides gave evidence to join their side. he trended for a few hours. by the end, he heard out the evidence, tried a slice, and decided that it “wasn’t the worst thing i could have put in my mouth. 3/10.”

On average, how much sleep do they get at a time?

around six hours. he keeps on top of his sleep schedule.

he has powers in canon: precious metal summoning, shadow travel, & general demigod abilities.

his precious metal summoning works on common metals and they don’t carry curses, but he has to pray to hades beforehand as pluto is the more metal-y version of hades. and his shadow travel works like shadow travel: teleportation through shadows & exhaustion afterwards. the general demigod abilities of super: strength, agility, speed, & healing are always on.

nah. he thinks collections are a waste of time & space.

jesus christ I was going to go to sleep at 2:00, got my phone to tuck into bed with me, it was dead. I joked earlier about "haha last thing I need before this month of travel is for my phone to die". It was super dead. Unresponsive. Finally came back on after 30 minutes of unfruitful tech-help searching. I finally figured out the time change probably was what triggered it to spaz out. It's 4.5 hours later. I went through panic and then 2 hours of backing up my phone unsuccessfully and 2 hours of calm down-ing. So what was supposed to GIVE me 1 hour will actually take away 5
