Tumblr media
I want to talk about this scene. The banquet of the Jins, some time after the Sun Shot campaign.
The Wens have been defeated, the Cultivating world is picking up its pieces. The Jins are trying to set themselves up as the head of the cultivating world. They have the power and the wealth, and they're also using underground means to get their hands on demonic Cultivation so they're basically establishing themselves as the new Wens.
During the banquet, Jin Zixun comes over to the twin Jades of Lan, and offers them a cup of alcohol. Every cultivator who has trained in Gusu (which is basically everyone) is well aware that the Lans do not drink. They. Know. This. Jin Zixun strolls over to precisely where they are seated and asks them to drink in public.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Jin Guangyao tries to mediate the issue, letting Jin Zixun know that his demands are absurd, but then Jin Zixun retorts that they've formed an alliance with the Lans which is true. The Lans were heavily damaged during the war, along with the Jiangs. Their strong connection with the Jins is helping them scale through rebuilding. To do anything to fracture that friendship would put the Lan clan in an unfortunate position. Yet what Zixun is asking of them is just plain wrong. It's almost bullying. Drinking is not only against their rules but they can't handle alcohol.
Tumblr media
I like this little moment when Zixun says it's an ultimatum and Lan Xichen turns to Wangji for a second. Wangji's eyes like "Brother, don't you dare touch that filthy cup." XD.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Now, let's talk about everyone else during this scene because this is a very public confrontation and all their 'friends' are there. Everyone is very present and this is what they are doing. They are, to put it in a nice way, amused. They are amused by how hard the twin Jades are having it.
I mean, I get it, they are not trying to be jerks on purpose and probably assume that the Jades are making a mountain out of a molehill. After all, it's just one cup of alcohol and they themselves can stomach plenty. Except that it IS a very big deal. They can't drink and they can't hold their liquor. One cup is way too much for them. Even if they didn't know this, anyone should know that forcing people to drink in social situations is wrong! (But who am I kidding, plenty of nondrinkers still get pressured into drinking even in today's world).
Tumblr media
I'm also going to point out that Jin Guangyao is somehow the only one truly begging for Lan Xichen's sake. He's visibly distressed. Nie Mingjue is visibly distressed as well but he's doing nothing.
Tumblr media
So, true to his peacekeeper people-pleaaser nature, Lan Xichen bends his morals to accept the cup. He figures he can handle one cup, its what a good clan leader should do right? There's no need to make a fuss about something like this. If this small gesture will help the clan then why shouldn't I make this small sacrifice (sacrificed so much of life already so why not one more).
Tumblr media
Now, Lan Wangji is mad. He wasn't pissed before, he could ignore their barbaric behaviour, but now it's personal. We can all tell by Lan Wangji's reaction that he's a little disappointed that Lan Xichen was forced to succumb to peer pressure. He's a little upset with his brother but he's more upset with the fact that it's okay to sit and watch this happen. No one is going to fight for them. If the world wills them to drink they just drink whether or not they want to. So now he's thinking "I'm not going to stand for that."
Tumblr media
This small moment where Lan Xichen shakes his head clearly telling Jin Guangyao not to worry about him. 🥺
Tumblr media
Jin Zixun dares to bring that disgusting cup his way and Lan Wangji gives him the look. This exact look says everything. It says "I'm not taking that cup." It's his own little way of fighting for justice. Jin Zixun's hands will break before his fingers so much as graze that cup he's holding.
Tumblr media
We see Lan Xichen panic a little cause he knows his brother better than anyone and Wangji has got his stubborn face on. He is not touching that cup. He's stuck in a very awkward position because he could take the other cup for his brother, but just because he survived one cup doesn't mean hell survive two. To make things worse, one cup is exactly Lan Wangji's limit, and once again, no one is moving to help them.......
Tumblr media
......until (●♡∀♡).
Tumblr media
The look of love on Lan Zhan's face.
Tumblr media
Wei Wuxian really waltzed in there already ready to start some shit, just to find the Cultivating world picking on his boyfriend and his brother-in-law. No way he was having that.

You remember since when?
Adaman dismisses the Sands, leaning back as he shoots a concerned look at Volo.
"Well, since she came to save us. Her return to our reality gave us our memories back so why..."
He stares at Volo, who has his head in his hands.

One detail that I find endlessly fascinating is the contrast between how Madame Jin and Qin Su are treated by their respective husbands--not in their personal lives, but politically.
When everyone gathers for the Phoenix Mountain Hunt, Jin Guangshan enters at the head of the procession. Madame Jin follows several paces behind, next to Jiang Yanli.
Tumblr media
When they sit to watch the archery competition, Madame Jin sits off to the side next to Jiang Yanli.
Tumblr media
Granted, any reasonable person would rather sit by Jiang Yanli than Jin Guangshan if given the option, and we know that the Jin parents don't like each other overmuch. However, this pattern continues when everyone adjourns to the conference hall for food and discussion.
Tumblr media
That throne is the size of a park bench and here's Jin Guangshan, taking up the entire thing like he's the biggest douche on public transit. Madame Jin, meanwhile, is nowhere to be found.
By contrast, the first time we see Qin Su, she's entering the conference hall arm-in-arm with Jin Guangyao.
Tumblr media
And then they both go and sit on the throne beside each other, and both greet the conference attendees.
Tumblr media
We don't see any other married sect leaders holding court like this, so I don't think we have an in-universe baseline for Normal Political Couple Behavior. What's going on? It's either:
1.) Jin Guangyao is breaking with tradition by having his wife preside over formal events alongside him. (Which is unusual if so! After all, the Qin clan isn't especially high-ranking, so it's not like he'd need to confer special privileges to maintain favor. Is he doing it out of guilt, because he's convinced himself that power is worth enduring messed-up personal situations, so this is an attempt to make it up to her? Is it simply that he values her judgment and is gonna be BRAZEN about it out of spite because fuck all that "eDucaTeD wOmEn aRE tRoUbLe" shit? Both? Something else?)
2.) Wives of sect leaders traditionally do preside over events alongside their husbands like Qin Su is, and Jin Guangshan is the one who broke with tradition by shutting his wife out of everything. (Which, if so, would add some new aspects to Madame Jin's hostility towards Jin Guangyao. Her husband blatantly has no respect for her, unashamedly has a reputation as the jianghu's preeminent womanizer, and blames her for his behavior so she's the butt of every sexist joke that isn't about Yu Ziyuan. And now his common-born bastard gets to have more voice and presence in sect politics than she does? Are you for real right now?)
Either way, I am intrigued!

The Sin List
okay, so as we all know, it is vitally important that any character we stan must be morally pure and a good example to emulate in real life.
So I have decided to create a list of MDZS characters and their sins, which everyone can easily refer to in order to make sure that they are not following some horrible criminal or murderer!
This was a lot of work, but I'm very proud of it. Just doing my bit to ensure the moral purity of the fandom!
Wei Wuxian - Necromancy, disrespecting his elders, disrespecting the dead, killed Jin Zixuan, punched Jin Zixuan in the face one time, cannibalism, mind control, deviant sexual fantasies, trespassing, oath-breaking, urged Wen Qing to perform untested and possibly fatal operation on Jiang Cheng without his consent.
Lan Wangji - Defied his elders, broke the Lan Clan rules, sexually assaulted Wei Wuxian, deviant sexual fantasies, GBH (JGY)
Jin Guangyao - betrayed and killed Wen Ruohan, betrayed and killed Jin Guangshan, murder (NMJ), murdered assorted people, disrespecting the dead, assorted Spy Things for Wen Ruohan.
Nie Mingjue - Killed a lot of people during the war, verbally abused Nie Huaisang, burned Nie Huaisang's stuff, attempted murder (JGY), attempted murder (JGY), attempted murder (JGY), murder (JGY), killed the Mo family (well, his arm did anyway). In favor of the genocide of the Wen Remnants
Jin Guanshan: Sexual assault, rape, murder, ordering human experimentation with resentful energy to be done by his sect, played both sides during the war, didn't take responsibility for his children, ultimately responsible for getting WWX killed because he wanted the YTT so bad
Wen Ruohan: Attempted world domination, murder etc
Lan Qiren: has a stick up his ass
Su Minshan: Refused to die for the Lan, supported JGY in his efforts to prevent undead Da-ge from killing him. Also cursed Jin Zixun.
Sect Leader Yao: Weathervane politician
Jiang Wanyin: strangled Wei Wuxian that one time, keeps trying to talk to him but is way too tsundere about it, killed many during the war, didn't immediately forgive WWX for getting JYL killed, threatens to break Jin Ling's legs weekly.
Jin Ling: rude. rude rude rude. Also stabbed WWx one time
Lan Jingyi: not respecting his elders, rude rude rude. Also loud
JFM: shit dad, throw him in a volcano
Madame Yu: Angry mom, beat Wei Wuxian for things that weren't his fault, yelled at JC a lot, didn't appreciate JYL, very mean.
Lan Xichen: killed people during the war. Randomly starts doing flute solos in conversation
Meng Shi: was a prostitute. Told Meng Yao his dad was amazing and he should totally look him up later.
Madam Jin: awful person, she can go into the volcano with JFM. physical and verbal abuse (JGY)
Nie Huaisang: killed cats, nearly killed the juniors, let his sect fall into ruin, traded obscene materials, disrespecting his sect's traditions, lied to Lan Xichen to make him kill JGY
Wen Qing: went along with WRH's plans, performed surgery on JC without his consent
Wen Ning: Was part of the burning of LP
Mo Xuanyu: Summoned Satan to murder his relatives, harassed his brother
Jin Zixun: asshole, rude, broke the Geneva Convention on the ethical treatment of prisoners several times. Useless person
FOR THE SAKE OF SAFETY AND YOUR MORALS YOU ARE ONLY ALLOWED TO STAN THE FOLLOWING CHARACTERS
Jiang Yanli
Qin Su
Lan Shizui

I need to reread the Huan Hua Palace segments of SVSSS, but one of my headcanons for why it was relatively easy for Luo Binghe to take over is that there was a longstanding power vacuum partially due to the Su Xiyan/Tianlang-Jun mess. Like, both Cang Qiong and Huan Hua in the story seem to be missing adult cultivators who weren't sect leaders / peak lords, in terms of characters who are named and actually appear in the story, and I can think of a few Watsonian reasons in Huan Hua's case why the answer might be: "They're dead."
Firstly, it's totally possible that Tianlang-Jun killed a LOT of people before being sealed. I can't remember if anyone in SVSSS provides any stats on this, but Tianlang-Jun is hardly a pushover, even if he loved Su Xiyan. He must have lashed out.
Secondly, I bet Zhuzhi-Lang killed a lot of people during the sealing. And I wouldn't be surprised if, even in his weakened form, Zhuzhi-Lang has spent the past 20 years or so secretly murdering every Huan Hua cultivator he encountered in the woods or during his attempts to free his uncle. (In which case, Shen Yuan stopping Gongyi Xiao from killing Zhuzhi-Lang becomes even more ironic and tragic.)
Thirdly, I wouldn't be surprised if the Palace Master was the sort of person who cultivated an entourage of toadies and regularly disappeared the more disruptive competition. What happened with Su Xiyan and Shen Qingqiu in the Water Prison were both special cases, arguably, but he seems like that kind of asshole generally. In which case genuinely skilled and ambitious threats to his power have got to go.
Fourthly, I wouldn't be surprised if he and Su Xiyan were in some kind of power struggle (that she ultimately lost) with casualties before the sealing. I read Su Xiyan as being a very popular and politically powerful figure, so she might have been moving to grab the position of Palace Master (especially if she's actually falling for Tianlang-Jun and after discovering her pregnancy), in which case getting rid of some of the Palace Master's strongest supporters might seem like a reasonable step to someone with "the heart of a tyrant". And when the Palace Master secretly imprisoned her, it seems reasonable that this could have been discovered by some people within Huan Hua Palace (you need people to help you do your dirty work!), and there could have been divided loyalties there and deaths if anyone objected. And the Palace Master might have purposefully sent Su Xiyan's strongest supporters, who were ignorant of his schemes, up against Tianlang-Jun to get rid of them.
(There's also things like whatever is going on between Mobei-Jun's clan and Huan Hua Palace??? I think there's some kind of feud there. Which probably didn't help.)
So, twenty years later, when Huan Hua Palace is only just beginning to recover its numbers and is accidentally growing some talented young disciples with actual morals like Gongyi Xiao, Luo Binghe shows up and conveniently (for him) finds that huge chunks of the older generations at Huan Hua are missing. There's mostly young disciples and corrupt toadies left. Thanks, Mom and Dad!

The Kuvira/Suyin parallels
So, this is piggybacking off my previous post about the Opal/Lin parallels, and to be honest I've always loved making this comparison, wince it's just so damn ironic and juicy.
Suyin and Kuvira are, of course, adversaries through a lot of the show, however, I think it's, mostly due to their similarities.
Tumblr media
Both Kuvira and Suyin are, at their cores, leaders of their self made factions. Both also built said factions as coping mechanisms to the abandonment/neglect they experienced as children.
Both these characters garner the affection they lacked as children by having people depending on them. And also controlling said people. Suyin, by building a city and clan she was the matriarchal of. And closer to her, personally, keeping her family tight knit and her children isolated from the wider world and heavily dependent on her. As for Kuvira, it projecting her trauma onto a suffering nation and fashioning herself into being a hero of the people. Someone the people adored.
You don't really need to do a lot of mental gymnastics for this one. They were both isolated and lonely as kids, so they created environments where they were important and revered.
Tumblr media
There's clear pressure from both these women for their "people" to conform to the rules they set. Suyin threatens Kuvira and Baatar Jr with banishment. One another occasion, she enables Korra's hunt for Aiwei, despite the obvious risk this endeavour would bring. While Kuvira's methods of control are more... barbaric? I'd call concentration camps barbaric but to each their own.
Tumblr media
Suyin 🤝 Kuvira threatening poor earthbender himbos. God I wish that were me.😨👀Haha who said that?
They're fiercely protective of their carefully crafted status quo, since it is, essentially, a coping mechanism. The further it falls apart, the further their own psyche does too.
Suyin's qorst nightmare is her family and city falling apart, while for Kuvira it is when her Empire crumbles.
Tumblr media
They can become increasingly manic and desperate the more danger their 'works' are, tossing any moral code or even sanity out the window.
They'll grasp at any straws to protect what's theirs. Suyin pressured Korra into going into the Avatar state, despite Korra's clear discomfort. Kuvira, meanwhile, harnessed the energy of the spirit vines and laid waste to Republic City.
There both even willing to endanger their allies, even those closest to them. Suyin taking her youngest sons on a dangerous mission to try and kill Kuvira (someone they most likely knew as children) while Kuvira herself nearly murdered Baatar Jr, her fiancé and closest supporter, just for the chance of taking out Korra. Rip Beifong brothers you really are the true victims here.
Tumblr media
This desperation is understandable... its all they have. Both Kuvira and Suyin grew up alone, feeling unloved by their families. This led them to acting out. Be it for attention or any other reason, they ended up being too much to handle for their parents
Tumblr media
We all know about Suyin scarring Lin, right? And this being part of the reason Suyin was forced to leave her home and dropped off at her grandparents. I find it interesting that it is implied that Kuvira too severely injured her mother, perhaps this also being the catalyst for her being given away by her parents too.
Tumblr media
Perhaps because Suyin's second chance was so good for her, she wished to extend one to a troubled young girl. I firmly believe she saw a lot of herself in Kuvira (for better or for worse). The line about "hurting someone in this family" easily made me think of what Suyin did to Lin and see that she regrets it and doesn't want Kuvira to go through the same.
Regret, however does not fix all and neither Kuvira, nor Suyin know how to atone for what they've done.
Tumblr media
It seems hard for either of these characters to understand the hurt they've caused nor that their actions have consequences. However, Suyin and Kuvira are treated rather kindly by the narrative. We've seen planty of people talk about how Su is coddled by the show's writing. And Kuvira is treated with a similar gentle hand. Redemption is a muddy subject for me, however I will say that bothese very complex and fascinating characters were done extremely dirty by shallow writing.
Tumblr media
However, I will finish this long silly ramble by saying that it is very in character for Su to forgive Kuvira, despite this possibly making her children uncomfortable.
A huge part of Suyin's ideology is believing in second chances. However it runs deeper than that. As stated before, her family is the most important thing in the world to her. And Kuvira is part of that family. It's not surprising that Su is hurriedly doing damage control on everything after B4 and everything that happened.
I find Kuvira and Suyin fascinating characters. Their trauma, their drive and the mild insanity with delusions of grandeur is what really pulls together these two tormentors of the Beifong family together for me. ❤️
-
Also, on a side note. I find it very curious when people like one of these characters, but dislike the other, since they are so similair with their arcs and personalitywise. If you are a Kuvira stan and a Suyin hater or a Suyin stan and a Kuvira hater, could you clue me in a little on the thought process? Is it like. Just vibes? Or is it one of the small differences between Su and Kuvira that feels so jarring that it seperates them completely?

i'm sorry (happier part 2)
Tumblr media
A/N: I was not expecting the amount of positive feedback for the first part and I was even more surprised to see people asking for a part 2! It was originally created to be a one-shot but a part 2 really fit well with how the first one ended. Anyway, I just wanted to say thank you again for all of the love and support! I hope you all enjoy. I also want to thank my friend, @tummymoth, they really helped me flush out and refine my rusty ass writing (also let me word vomit at them till midnight sometimes).
Pairing(s): Past Lo’ak x Omatikayan!Reader, Ao’nung x Omatikayan!Reader, Slight mentions of Lo’ak x Tsireya
Warnings: Lo'ak's POV, Swearing, Ao'nung saying something sus ONE time
More Info: My vision for this part 2 was to create a reply in Lo'ak's pov. So we'll have a look at what he experienced and thought process (not too sure if any of that made sense) but I was inspired by Joshua Bassett's song "i'm sorry" and it played constantly as I wrote this. Hopefully I was able to do right by my idea haha.
Summary: 7,547
Part 1: Happier
Key:
(Y/N) = Your Name
Lyrics = Bolded Italics
Flashbacks = Italics
Na'vi Words:
Yuey - beautiful (refers to a person)
Skxawng - idiot/moron
Marui - Pods where the Na’vi live
Ilu - sea creature similar to dolphins
Ikran - dragon-like creature
Tulkun - sentient creatures similar to whales
Olo’eyktan - clan leader/ chief
I thought about what I would say
But I’m two years too late
I can’t imagine how you’re doing these days, hmm
Sure, it wasn’t perfect back then
I’ll be first to admit
But it was better than being strangers again, oh
It had been a couple of months since my interactions with (Y/N) dwindled to terse smiles and barely audible greetings. If you asked me to point out the moment our friendship started to change, I couldn’t tell you. When did our bond start to break? When did it even start to crack? We used to talk every day about all the things we did and planned what pranks to pull on everyone, but now? Now, she barely looked in my direction. Now, she wouldn’t even give me the time of day.
I couldn’t remember when it started, but I knew that it was somehow my fault I grew distant once we arrived in Awa'atlu. I guess I was just so fascinated by the new environment and people, I didn’t even realize a rift started to form between us in the first place, much less that it started to grow.
The night before we left to find a new home, I held (Y/N) as she let out sobs filled with fear and anxiety. It broke my heart, but all I could do was hold her and let her cry until she was calm enough to tell me what was on her mind.
“I-I am afraid, what if the sky people come to find us again? I cannot lose any of you; it would break me into a million pieces,” she sobbed.
“If they find us then we will fight and we will win,” I reassured her, gently rocking her back and forth.
“You are an idiot, I was so close to losing you, to losing Kiri, Tuk, how do you think it would make me feel to lose the most important people in my life?” she sniffled. My chest ached at how broken she sounded, but the only thing I could do was assure her and offer her more words of comfort as I held her in my arms.
“I promise that I will be with you throughout the journey as will my family. We love you, and even if you do not believe it, you are a Sully. And you know what my dad always says.”
“Sullys stick together,” we chorused.
That night, I cradled her in my arms until she fell asleep.
Fuck, I completely broke my promise to her, how could I forget? Shaking my head, I tried to reason to myself, “Maybe she just needs time alone. I’m sure she’ll come running back soon once she realizes that it's no fun without me, her best friend.” I felt a small, unfamiliar feeling in the pit of my stomach. “Right?”
I’m drunk too late talking to the moon
Writing songs I can’t sing to you, ‘cause
“Bah! Stop lying, I know you (Y/N). You would have fought alongside me and defended Kiri. You are not the same girl I knew in the forest back home,” I muttered, rolling my eyes and getting up to leave. Honestly, who did she think she was fooling? The skxawng had the balls to insult Kiri, and all she did was sit back and watch. She didn’t even make a move to help until it was to help him by pulling me off. “Talk to me when you’ve come back to your senses,” I called over my shoulder, refusing to look back.
“Lo’ak! Bro—” a hand roughly grabbed my shoulder, jolting me out of my daze, “why’re you just staring off like that?” I whipped my head to see who the hell it was that was bothering me, only to be met with Neteyam.
“Did you have to grab me that hard?” I hissed before my initial anger gave way to a heavy feeling. “It's nothing, just—just lost in thought” I sighed, shrugging his hand off my shoulder.
“Right, sure, nothing.” he crouched down beside me. “Don’t think you can lie to me lil bro, you’ve been spacing out more than you usually do. I didn’t even think it was possible to be more empty-headed than you already are,” he stated.
“Wha—no I haven’t,” I tried to argue, but of course, he wasn’t convinced.
“Can you stop arguing with me for once and just tell me what’s going on with you, you skxawng?”
I scrunched my nose in distaste and inhaled sharply, “(Y/N) and I have been…  distant,” I admitted, turning to look at him. “She won’t even look at me. She either only answers me with one word or doesn’t answer at all.”
He nodded, motioning for me to continue.
“I—the last time we talked, I said things I didn’t mean. Things that just came out because I was so frustrated and… and angry. It was the heat of the moment and I—”
“What did you say skxawng, did you hurt her?” Neteyam interrupted, face twisting to show the beginnings of distaste.
“No, no—” I sputtered and raised my hands to calm him before he could go on an hour-long lecture that I absolutely was not in the mood to hear. “At least I don’t think I did… I just wanted to ask her why the hell she was helping fish lips, that’s all—”
“You didn’t answer me Lo’ak, what did you say to (Y/N)? I don’t care why you did it, I want to know what you said to elicit such a reaction from her.” By Eywa, if he would just give me a chance to get to the point—
“I—I told her that she was not the same girl that I knew back in the forest..." my ears lowered as the weight of what I said slowly sunk in. “And that she could talk to me once she came back to her senses,” I whispered, internally cringing at my harsh words..
“You fucking skxawng—”
“Can you stop calling me that? I already know, you don’t need to keep repeating it…” I scoffed, looking out into the ocean. I’m good enough at beating myself up over the hundreds of times I’ve messed up in this lifetime, I didn’t need another disappointed set of eyes on me.
My ears twitched at the deep sigh he let out. “Look, I’m sorry that I keep calling you skxawng but that is exactly what you are for saying something so hurtful to your best friend of all people. The two of you were inseparable the moment you were born. Even if you don’t want to, suck up your dumbass pride,” my ears flattened again. It wasn’t pride, I’m not prideful. It—it was me needing (Y/N) on my side. We used to always be on the same page, and when she said I was wrong for wanting to defend Kiri against those assholes, it felt like she was siding with them instead of me, and—
Okay, so maybe it was pride.
  “Admit that you were wrong, and go talk to (Y/N),” Neteyam insisted as he put a reassuring arm around my shoulders, jostling me around to prove a point. “Your friendship is so much stronger and Eywa knows that a heat-of-the-moment argument isn’t going to break that. You should have more faith in her.” His gaze sharpened before he schooled his expression into something calmer. “Just talk to her, yeah?”
“...Yeah,” I mumbled, swallowing down whatever argument was trying to bubble up from my throat and prying his arm off me. “You’re right. I’ll just clear things up with her and apologize. Everything will go back to normal after that, thanks bro—for listening,” I agreed.
Ever since that day
The things I didn’t say They haunt me, oh
And I know that I’m to blame
So, go ahead and
Blame it on me, oh
Our lessons on the ways of the Metkayina were finished, so it was rare for the entire group to be in the same place. But every once in a while, we all finished our chores at the same time and found ourselves near the shore where we first learned to ride the ilu, and sat around a fire hours before eclipse, laughing and exchanging stories.
The rarity of these moments made me cherish them that much more, but two people continued to miss our not-so-scheduled gatherings the past two moon cycles. How was it possible that they were the only two to keep missing our hangouts? Were they together? Fish lips had better not be doing anything to (Y/N) or so hel—
“(Y/N)! Ao’nung! You guys made it!” Rotxo laughed.
“Yeah, yeah, quit shouting will you?” Ao’nung shot back as he sat down next to Rotxo, (Y/N) smiling softly as she followed.
“So, what’ve you guys been up to? We haven’t seen you in what feels like ten moon cycles.” Neteyam questioned.
“Teyam, you saw me earlier today, you literally helped me feed our ikran,” (Y/N) joked. ‘Teyam? When did she start calling him by anything other than his given name?
Ao’nung swatted her side with his stupidly wide tail and swung an arm around her shoulder with a remarkably punchable smile on his face “More like he was trying to make sure you didn’t accidentally give them your fingers for breakfast. They would’ve gotten indigestion.”
“Haha very funny Ao’nung,” she drawled, “I would’ve fed you to Tekay instead, but she would’ve gagged the moment she caught a whiff of you,” she scoffed as she quickly pushed him away by the chest.
“Wait… Do they even have a gag reflex?” Fish lips didn’t budge, he just had a dumb look of confusion on his face.
“No, but they would defy the laws of biology to gag just for you,” she quipped, sticking out her tongue and moving to push him away again, but the skxawng had the nerve to pull her into a headlock.
“Oh, yuey, the ikran won’t be the only ones gagging on me tonight,” he argued with a smirk.
Did I want to punch that smirk off his face? Did I want to gag? Both? Before I could make a decision, (Y/N) grimaced, pushing him away again and smacking him upside the head.
“That’s actually repulsive. You’re disgusting.”
“Dude, keep it in your pants, her family is right there,” Rotxo laughed, doubled over as he struggled to catch his breath.
“Yeah, we’re right here,” I interjected with a smile—wanting to join in on the jokes that were being thrown around—but it was hard to keep my face from falling when I saw (Y/N)’s bright expression falter.
“Anyway, what were you guys talking about before Ao’nung and I arrived?” she asked in a too-bright tone of voice she only used when she desperately wanted to change the subject. As if everyone came to an unspoken agreement to forget about the conversation before, one by one they all started talking about who they thought would win in a fight—Toruk Makto, or our Olo’eyktan, Tonowari.
The sound of laughter and excited chatter faded as I replayed the previous conversation in my head. When did they start joking around like that? Why the hell did fish lips call her yuey like it was the most natural thing in the world? How come she smiled so easily with him but faltered when she sees me? She was probably smiling with him right now—
I looked over at her, a pit in my stomach already forming at the idea of her smiling at him, but she looked so distant, so withdrawn from everything around her. Before I could even blink, she put a delicate hand on Ao’nung’s arm to grab his attention and mumbled something in a hushed tone. After a few beats of silent conversation, Ao’nung nodded and gave her a look of understanding.
Why did he look at her like that? How much time did they spend together to be able to understand each other with just a look? How much time have I wasted breaking my promise to her while she grew closer to someone else?
 Standing up, I made up my mind that I would talk to her and clear up any miscommunication. There was no way in hell I was about to let fish lips ruin our childhood friendship. Before I could even get close, Neteyam pulled me aside.
“Bro, why’re you glaring at everyone?” he asked with concern written all over his face.
“Glaring?” I tilted my head in confusion. “I’m not glaring, this is just my face.”
“No, no.” He shook his head. “I’m your brother, I know your face. Whatever look you’ve been throwing at Ao’nung and (Y/N)? You may as well have been throwing knives at them.”
Behind Neteyam, I could see (Y/N) get up to bid everyone good night and slowly walk in our direction. This was my chance, I just needed this overbearing idiot to leave me alone.
“Whatever look you think I’m giving to them, you’re wrong,” I denied. “Can you not act like this right now?” My tail flicked side to side impatiently, an obvious twinge of annoyance clear in my tone. I licked my lips nervously as I could hear footsteps coming closer. Leaning slightly to the side, I looked behind Neteyam to see (Y/N) and—
Ao’nung? What? Why is he there?
“Good night,” (Y/N) muttered, not sparing us a glance as she walked past. I followed her every move and—as if everything slowed down—my eyes narrowed as they found Ao’nung’s hand placed on her lower back, leading her gently in the direction of the marui.
I know that I’m too late
But I’ll say it anyway
I’m sorry
I’m sorry
I’m sorry
Though it's far too late
“I did it! Did you see that Reya?” I shouted—out of breath—as I showed off the shell Tsireya threw.
“Yes, yes you did it!” She exclaimed, excitedly wrapping her hand around mine. For someone who spent so much time underwater, her hand radiated so much warmth. So easy to hold. My heart swelled with pride as she continued to compliment me. “You’ve improved so much!”
“Yeah? Well, I had a great teacher,” I joked, nudging her softly with my shoulder. It wasn’t just her hands that were warm either, she just seemed to radiate it.
“Oh stop, you flatter me too much,” she denied, fidgeting with her hair. Was that a blush on her face? “C’mon, why don’t we catch up with the others? Private lessons are officially done for the day,” she announced as she led me to shore. Oh Eywa, she looked so pretty like this, with her hair flowing down her back and the way her eyes cast down when she became flustered. And her smile, it was a smile that could knock the air out of my lungs.
While we walked onto shore, we joked around and laughed with each other, talking about anything and everything. The ease of each reply and joke came as smoothly as gliding through the water on an ilu—as easy as breathing. Laughing at another one of Tsireya’s jokes, my eyes scanned the village as we approached it. Families were winding down for the day as they cooked dinner, although I didn’t see mine anywhere nearby aside from Kiri.
My smile slowly dropped when I was able to make out Kiri looking frantically around as if she was searching for someone. Tsireya and I made our way to her, worry filling the pit in my stomach. As we got closer, I could see Ao’nung climb down one of the roots of the Mangrove trees and make a beeline toward her. My eyes stayed on both of them, making sure that fish lips didn’t do anything to Kiri.
Ears twitching I was able to make out the words, “(Y/N)? Did you find her? ” from Kiri as they were carried on the wind toward us.
“Yeah I did, I was able to get her to eat, but she’s not looking too good,” Ao’nung replied with concern lacing his voice.
Brows furrowing, I pulled Ao’nung by the shoulder. “What do you mean she’s not looking good? Where is she? What did you do?”
“What the hell do you mean? I didn’t do shit, freak.” I rolled my eyes at the insult. He couldn’t use that thick head of his to think of anything else to call me? From the pained look on his face, I could tell that my grip on his shoulder had too much pressure. Good. Served him right.
Before Ao’nung and I could continue our argument Kiri groaned, “Will the both of you skxawng shut up! I’ll go talk to her.” My eyes followed her retreating form as she went to talk to (Y/N)—tail lashing back and forth in agitation all the while—before turning back to Ao’nung.
Who the hell did he think he was? I’d beat his skxawng ass if he hurt (Y/N) in any way. He had no right to look so damn worried. They weren’t even close. What even happened? How long had she been missing for Kiri to go to fish lips of all people for help? Should I follow Kiri? Why didn’t (Y/N) come to me? She always came to me, and if she came to me now, I absolutely would have listened. Why—
“Lo’ak? Hey, are you okay? Lo’ak?” a hand softly placed itself on my arm. Closing my eyes in frustration, I sighed.
“Yeah, perfectly fine.”
Damn it, was that when it started? How idiotic and blind have I been that I didn’t even notice that her trust in me started to slip and die when it was right in front of me? Why didn’t I go to her and make sure she was okay? I should’ve punched that idiot’s lights out—
“Ao’nung! Stop pulling me you skxawng, you’re walking too fast, slow down!” a hushed voice chastised.
“C’mon yuey, we only have about an hour before eclipse, we have to hurry!” His voice grated against my ears as he responded.
“That’s plenty of time!” (Y/N) insisted. I could hear the laughter bubbling up in her voice as she chased after him. “Please Ao’nung slow down, I can’t keep up.”
“It can’t be helped, you’re so short—” a whack could be heard. “Ow!”
“I’m as tall as Tsireya, you giant!”
“Both you and my sister are short—Ow! Alright, just because you did that, you leave me no choice,” Ao’nung said, throwing (Y/N) over his shoulder with a laugh.
The bickering voices got closer, and my eyes narrowed at the way he held her. My breath hitched as he whispered something in her ear that made her ears perk up and her eyes widen. What the hell was he saying to her? Before I could spring up from my spot, Ao’nung tossed (Y/N) in the water, her yelp quickly interrupted by the sound of her body hitting the water.
I stayed in my spot as shock zipped through my body. Letting out a breath I didn’t know I held, her head popped out of the water, a playful glare on her face.
“I told you, you left me no choice,” he stated, guffawing at her expression.
“Oh yeah?” she groused, spitting out seawater as she wrung out her hair. “Well fuck you too. Help me out of here?”
“Only if you say the magic word,” he taunted, crossing his arms with a smirk. “Otherwise, I’m afraid my hands are tied.”
“Please, oh great son of our Olo’eyktan, help me out of the ocean,” she beckoned dramatically, sarcasm dripping from every word while she rolled her eyes. “It’s about time you recognized my proud lineage, forest dweller,”  he said as his chest puffed out with a hand reaching towards (Y/N). And there was that stupid smile on his face.
(Y/N) rolled her eyes, a mischievous smile spreading across her face as she reached for his hand, making sure to tug with enough force to unceremoniously yank him into the water.
“So much for the son of a great warrior! Your instincts are shit!”
“My instincts are dull you say?” he questioned as his head popped up next to her. “We’ll see about that!”
“Wha—AHHH—'' she wheezed. “No, please Ao’nung stop! That tickles!” Her arms flailed wildly in an attempt to free herself from his grasp.
What the fuck.
  My ears flattened at an angle as I tried to process the scene unfolding before me. When did she start laughing with him? That should’ve been me she was laughing with. Not him, not the skxawng who had been nothing but rude to us since we arrived. What… what was I even saying—Fuck I didn’t know anymore. Why did I feel like this every time I saw them together… laughing and making jokes like we used to?
And it was me, it wasn’t you
It’s cliche, but it’s true
I wasn’t thinking how I usually do, oh
And is your momma doing well?
Or does she still hate me?
But it was hard to watch me put you through hell
I’m drunk, too late, talking to the moon, ooh
Writing songs I can’t sing to you, ‘cause
Two weeks had passed since I started noticing the changes in (Y/N)’s relationship—friendship?—with Ao’nung. It was like every time I blinked, I could see her laughing loudly as Ao’nung tickled her with a triumphant smile on his stupid face. Since that day, I had been trying to find a way to talk to (Y/N), but she was never alone. She was always with him and when she wasn’t, she disappeared and I couldn’t find her no matter how hard I looked.
Now here I was, wandering around trying to look for her as I rehearsed what I wanted to tell her.
Where could she be? Dinner was in an hour and she wasn’t anywhere near our marui. I had to find her soon so there would be enough time for us to talk. I had to tell her that I miss her, that I was sorry for being so dumb, that I shouldn’t have let my pride blind me, and that I didn’t mean any of the things I said.
There was only one place I hadn’t looked yet… hopefully she was there.
As I was getting closer to the root Kiri stalked to, I could see two silhouettes beside each other. An all-too-familiar feeling bloomed in my chest once I registered that she was there with him.
Her melodic laughter made my steps falter. I clenched my fists tightly, contemplating if I should go over there and pull her away, force her to talk to me, to listen. But I couldn’t, I couldn’t do that to her, not when she looked so content, so happy.
Ever since that day
The things I didn’t say
They haunt me, oh
I know that I’m to blame
So, go ahead and
Blame it on me, oh
“Lo’ak? You said you were going to look for (Y/N) and never came back. She’s already in the marui helping mom cook,” Kiri stated, a twinge of annoyance lacing her voice. “Hey, are you listening?” She shook my arm slightly, making me jump out of my stupor.
“Yeah, sorry, you said dinner was ready?” I asked as I stared off.
The sand beside me crunched softly as Kiri made a move to sit beside me. “No, I said that (Y/N) is with mom helping her cook. Where is your head at?” she asked as she tilted her head to try and meet my gaze. “Are you alright?” The annoyance in her voice shifted to concern.
“I’m fine, yep—just… fine,” I brushed her off, hoisting myself up to head towards Mom and Dad for dinner before Kiri yanked me back down.
“Lo’ak, don’t pretend you’re okay when you’re not. Tell me what’s going on,” she urged. “Maybe I can help you with whatever it is that’s occupied your mind lately.”
I inhaled sharply, debating if I should tell her what had been muddying my mind, the reason why I had been so spaced out, why I had been glaring daggers at fish lips each time I saw his stupid face next to (Y/N)—how confused I was.
“Stop with the thinking skxawng, you might hurt yourself,” she admonished. “Just tell me. It’s not like I can’t handle it.”
Huffing, I rolled my eyes and turned away from her to look at the sea. I hadn't even said anything yet and Kiri was already making me feel idiotic. How was I supposed to tell her what's been going on like this? Maybe if I kept quiet for long enough, she would get tired of waiting for me to start talking and go on to eat dinner without me.
A couple of minutes of silence passed.
I could still feel her staring at me.
“I’ve—I’ve been conflicted,” I started, tongue feeling heavy in my mouth as I continued to stare at the shoreline. “I don’t know what I’m feeling.”
“What do you mean?” Kiri nudged my shoulder with hers. “Elaborate a little more, I can’t help if you don’t tell me the reason why you’re feeling confused.”
“...Whenever I see (Y/N) with Ao’nung, it’s as if I can feel my heart aching,” I said, motioning toward my chest to prove my point. “There’s always a… a surge of anger that rushes through me. All I want to do is pull her away from him so then everything can go back to the way things used to be—for us to be okay.”
“Lo’ak…” If I was looking at her, I’d probably see Kiri tilt her head with sympathy. But sympathy isn’t what I needed right now.
“I want her to look at me and smile, to laugh with me, hug me—but now, whenever I get close to her, she’s next to him, laughing with him, cracking the jokes we would make to each other… I just—” I rubbed at my face in frustration. It wasn’t as if the words were hard to come by—I had spent so much time bottling them up that it was hard to stop talking. No, I just hated the fact that I felt this way in the first place. “I don’t understand why seeing them makes me feel like my heart is about to explode—why it makes me want to scream. It hurts.”
“Lo’ak” she put a hand on my shoulder. “Are you—are you in love with (Y/N)?”
Love?
I sputtered in surprise and whipped my head toward Kiri to see if she was joking or not. What kind of a sick question was that? I wasn’t in the mood for any games.
“What? No, she’s like my… sister?”
She rolled her eyes and sighed. “If you’re not, then why does seeing her with Ao’nung hurt you so much? Why do you care as much as you do?”
“I shouldn’t!” I wrenched my shoulder away from her hand and stood up. The need to move around and do something—anything—was too much. There was too much energy thrumming right beneath my skin to sit still anymore.
“That’s the problem! After everything I said to her, done to her? I don’t have the right to say I’m in love with her. She’s my childhood friend, Kiri. That’s all our relationship has ever been… I just—” I paused in thought and tried to calm down. “I didn’t realize seeing her have so much fun with someone else would make me feel so, so hollow—”
“Let me ask you something, you have to promise to be completely honest with me, okay?”
I nodded, not even looking in her direction.
“When (Y/N) tried to pull you off from Ao’nung that one fight months ago, what did you feel? Angry? Betrayed? Jealous?”
Jealous? Did she really think I was sulking for months because of such a petty feeling? I’m not a jealous person. I never have been.
“Seeing her jump in to get me off him made me feel like she was siding with him and telling me that I was wrong. Her actions were clear as day to me, Kiri.” I started to pace around. “She was protecting him—caring for him when she should’ve been next to me, helping and supporting me. When she did that—I felt like the only person that’s ever been on my side—” I croaked and turned my head to look at Kiri as tears stung my eyes “The only person who didn’t see everything I did as some sort of disappointment or failure, abandoned me and chose someone else.”
“...”
“I know that I could’ve approached her a different way but how could I when I felt so broken?” I inhaled sharply, eyebrows furrowed. “ It’s all fish lips’ fault. If he wasn’t such an asshole, none of this would have happened, and (Y/N) and I would still be the same, she would still be by my side—supporting me, loving me.”
“Why do you keep blaming it on Ao’nung?”
“Because it is his fault that things have turned out the way it has.” I threw my hands up, exasperated. What wasn’t Kiri getting? “He’s getting in between my relationship—er—friendship with (Y/N)! If he wasn’t there I would be able to talk to her and tell her I’m sorry, but she’s always with him—”
“Stop! Are you hearing yourself?” She nudged at my foot to interrupt and scoffed. “You’re unbelievable, you know that? (Y/N) told me what you said to her, how ‘she wasn’t the same girl’ you knew back in the forest. Do you know what happened when you told her that? Do you know how much pain she was in?”
Pain? I snorted, turning towards Kiri. “Now I know what you’re saying is bullshit. You know how (Y/N) is—if she really was pissed at me she would’ve come to me instead of running to someone else.”
“She wasn’t pissed. She cried because of you, Lo’ak. Because of what you said.” I stopped dead in my tracks to look at her. Kiri's eyes didn’t waver. Another heavy feeling settled on my chest and clawed its way up my throat. If you had asked me what it was, I wouldn’t have been able to tell you. Was I sad? Guilty? Angry? Was I jealous like she said?
I settled on anger.
“If you’re saying what I think you’re saying—”
“The person that found her that night, the one who comforted her? That was Ao’nung. He held her in his arms as she sobbed when I found them.” She stood up too, forcing me to stop pacing.
“The last thing I want to hear about right now is him, Kiri. What the fuck—”
“Did you ever think about why she’s so comfortable with him now? Why they’re so close? While you ignored her for weeks, he made sure she was okay—made sure she ate every day. He didn’t leave her side until she finished,” Kiri pointed out, and before I could even think to open my mouth to remind her how shitty he was to her especially, she cut me off. “Yes, he was an asshole at the beginning, and yes he has a screwed-up way to show he cares, but he stepped up when you fucked up.” She poked my chest with a glare before she continued.
“Oh, so I’m a fuck-up now?” I asked wryly.
“You can’t put all the blame on someone that took care of your best friend. Stop being so blinded by your pride and hatred and see that you’re the real reason why your relationship with (Y/N) isn’t the same as it used to be.”
My heart sank a little more as I scrambled for something to say. “How could you say that—”
“No, you do not get to interrupt me right now, Lo’ak.” Her eyes flashed with something closer to anger than annoyance. When was the last time I saw her angry? “Listen and listen well. When we couldn’t find (Y/N) and we were looking for her everywhere—he was the one that found her spot, the one she isolated herself to so she could cry alone, and no one would see how much pain she was in. And what were you doing in the meantime?”
My ears flattened at her rising tone, and I was finally beginning to understand the weight stuck in my throat and chest. Not anger, not even jealousy.
“You were out there with Tsireya, stuck in your own little world.”
It was my fault.
“Don’t get me wrong, I’m really happy that you found her but you can’t have both of them. You can’t be that selfish. From (Y/N)’s perspective, you’ve already chosen the one you want.”
“It’s not like I’ve actually chosen anyone yet,” I tried to interject, but all the fight had left my voice as Kiri’s words dug into my skin and sunk in.
“Don’t you dare play with either of their feelings. (Y/N) held so much love for you in her heart, she allowed herself to break to the point of no repair because she didn’t want to show you how much it hurt her to see you at your happiest with Tsireya.” She paused before continuing, her voice losing its edge. “Let her move on, brother. And if it’s Ao’nung that makes her light up the way she used to, then you suck it up and let him. He was there when your pride wouldn’t even let you apologize or even look in her direction. Actually think about how she feels for once.”
I hated the fact that there wasn’t anything I could say to prove her wrong.
“It’s all I’ve been thinking about nowadays,” I muttered.
I know that I’m too late
But I’ll say it anyway
I’m sorry
I’m sorry, hmm
I’m sorry
Though it’s far too late
“I thought I was already doing that,” a faint voice huffed in annoyance. Turning the corner, I saw Ao’nung and (Y/N) standing on the beach together— far too close for my liking.
“You were, but you got sloppy. Here, you have to move your hips like this,” he said as he corrected her posture. My ears flattened against my head as he put a hand on her hip and gently directed her movement.
Why did he look so gentle with her?
“Ao’nung,” (Y/N)’s voice rang out, clear as crystal despite her uncertain tone. “Are you sure you should be teaching me this? This is a traditional Metkayina dance, right? I’m…” she hesitated, her voice becoming smaller. “I’m not Metkayina—”
“Yet.” He interrupted, holding her face in his hands. “You are not Metkayina yet. Once you become one of us, you will have to learn the dance to celebrate the return of our spirit brothers and sisters, so why not learn that now?” I hated how reassuring his voice was. The thought of how either of their eyes looked as they held contact made my stomach turn.
“Yeah… you’re right,” she mumbled with an unsure look on her face.
“Woah, hey pretty girl, look at me,” he insisted, laying his hands on her shoulders and bending his neck so they were at eye level. “I’m serious when I say you will become Metkayina one day, so don’t worry yourself over it right now. Okay?” Ao’nung tilted his head to the side, an unbelievably soft expression on his face. “You have me here to help you.”
“Alright…” (Y/N) mumbled, not convinced.
“If you don’t get rid of that look on your face I’ll throw you into the water,” he said as his face shifted from sincerity to something mischievous. “Or worse… I’ll tickle you,” he threatened.
“You better not Ao’nung, or I swear to the Great Mother herself I will hu—AHH—get away, you skxawng!'' She laughed as she tried to run away, but Ao’nung grabbed hold of her waist and pulled her into his arms. And despite her words of protest, it was clear as day that she was leaning into him while they scuffled on the sand.
“No!” she shrieked with glee. “You can’t make me go in there again!”
“I wouldn’t be so sure of that, forest dweller!”
A thought occurred. Should I go up to them? We never got the chance to talk, after all. I took a few steps in their direction before freezing. When was the last time I heard her laugh like that? She had the biggest smile on her face, and the one who made that happen wasn’t me—it was him.
And if you ever hear this
I hope you know that
I’m not proud of who I’ve been, ooh
And if I see you again
I hope you know that
I wish you nothing but the best
And my biggest regret
The afternoon was quiet, relative silence only interrupted by the crashing of waves. Without much to do, I just sat in our marui and lazed around with Tuk until a horn blew.
“The tulkun have returned! Everybody—our brothers and sisters have returned!” Tsireya’s voice rang out, and when I poked my head out to see what the fuss was about, I saw the megawatt smile on her face, as she swam by on her ilu.
The village came to life as everyone mounted either ilu or canoe to make their way to the tulkun. From here, I could see little more than a large group of dark shapes making their way through the water. Payakan himself was dauntingly huge, but to see a whole pod of them show up like this? It was spectacular. I watched the commotion unfold from one of the walkways, lost in thought before I felt water splashing at my feet.
“Come on Lo’ak! Don’t just stand there, let’s go see the tulkun together!” Tsireya urged, still smiling. Shaken out of my stupor, I grinned widely—diving into the water and clambering onto her ilu. lu may be lithe animals, but I could still feel sinuous muscle under velvety skin as it made adjustments in the water to keep balance.
“I’ll come, but only if you’re offering a ride,” I joked, gently holding her waist and playfully leaning onto her. The cool water around us made her skin feel that much warmer. It was nice.
Before I could see her reaction—I would’ve bet anything at that moment that her cheeks had become flushed—we began to quickly make our way toward the rest of the clan and the giant tulkun.
The air around me vibrated with the excitement and happiness of loved ones returning, and Tsireya was no exception—the speed of the ilu gave away her eagerness to be with her spirit sister. As we leaped into and out of the water, Tsireya’s laughter was carried by the wind and reached my ears. That, and the answering whoops and bellows of Metkayina and tulkun alike, was almost contagious enough to get carried away by the energy surrounding us.
“My spirit sister is down there,” she said as she dismounted, sliding off her ilu and into the water. “Wait here, yeah?” she smiled at me before diving down.
I was more than happy to watch the Na’vi around me. Looking around, I was in awe of the sheer amount of tulkun gathered in one area, and how each Metkayina was able to identify their spirit sisters or brothers so easily. Looking down into the shifting waters, I saw Tsireya catching up with her spirit sister, waving her hands around and swimming through the water alongside her.
All around, I could hear people telling stories and the deep, booming calls of the tulkun as they responded with tales of their own. New parents were showing their babies and calves, and as my eyes scanned the horizon, I could see small children holding onto the tulkun’s fins as they were lifted to the glittering ocean surface.
Not too far away, I heard the sound of a body hitting the water and the sound of grating, but familiar laughter along with an indignant (Y/N) sputtering.
“Ao’nung, what the fu—”
“Hey, hey, relax! It’s just some water. There are children here, yuey,” Ao’nung chided with a shit-eating grin on his face.
“The parents of those children are going to have to explain what it means to return to Eywa once I’m through with you,” she retorted, treading water and becoming even more unamused when he raised his hands in mock surrender.
“Woah there pretty girl, you’re talking to the son of the mightiest warrior in all of Pandora—”
“That’s funny, I don’t see Neteyam here,” she interjected, pretending to search the waters around them before turning back to Ao’nung and tilting her head, “do you?”
“Just because you said that you can have fun finding your own way back to shore,” he said as he turned his ilu around.
“Oh, c’mon Ao’nung, don’t be like that,” she rolled her eyes and reached a hand towards him. “You’d really leave me here to fend for myself?”
He turned and wagged a disapproving finger at her, “I’ll consider forgiving you if you say word-for-word that I’m the son of the mightiest warrior in all of Pandora. I can’t have you slandering my father’s name, yuey.” She groaned and leaned back into the water.
“You couldn’t pay me enough to say that load of bull—”
“Nope!” he didn’t give her a chance to defile the ears of any nearby children and crossed his arms. “I wanna hear you say it.”
“...”
“I’m still waiting.”
With a sardonic smile, she finally caved. “Why don’t I do you one better? You’re the mightiest warrior to exist since the time of the First Songs,” she declared, sarcasm dripping from every word as she slapped at the water for emphasis.
“That’s what I thought, was that so hard?” Even if I wasn’t able to see them, I still would have been able to hear the stupidly wide smile that made its way across his face.
“Don’t be such a big baby and let me meet your spirit brother!”
“Just because he’s here to visit today, I’ll let that one slide for now.” Ao’nung rolled his eyes, dismounting his ilu to join (Y/N). “Now hold on tight and hold your breath like how we practiced.”
We? Who the fuck was we? Why was he allowing her to meet his spirit brother? Why were they looking at each other like that?
I watched both of their silhouettes submerge and breathed deeply, forcing my thundering heart to calm as I slowly sank my head into the water. At first, all I could see were blobs floating around in the water, but once my eyes adjusted, I could see the fluid movement of Ao’nung talking to his spirit brother. Eyebrows furrowing, I swam a little closer and hoped that I would be able to see what was being signed. With each movement made, it was clear that Ao’nung was translating the clicks and bellows of the tulkun to (Y/N), and whatever was being said made her smile widen by the second.
I couldn’t watch anymore as my chest burned from the lack of air and I resurfaced to catch my breath. For once, I was thankful for the lack of lung capacity I had. I climbed back onto Tsireya’s ilu. Seeing as she wasn’t back yet, I sat back and leaned on its neck to face the sky.
Did she always glow like that when she smiled? Whenever she was with him—she always looked so happy, so vibrant. Would she have looked like that with me by her side if I didn’t push her away? If I was there for her like I had promised? I wanted to tell her sorry—that I was sorry for taking our friendship for granted, for making her go through it alone. I wish that it didn’t take seeing her smile and laugh with someone else to make me realize how I felt.
I willed my tears to go away.
Is this how she felt? Seeing me with Tsireya? Great Mother… I was truly horrible, wasn’t I? I wished things turned out differently. Maybe in another universe, I did talk to her—realized sooner, made her happier—but now? Right now, my heart was torn in two, watching as someone else picked up the pieces of the heart I crushed. No amount of words could fix what we used to have, and even though I wanted to whisk her away, tell her I love her—that I see her—that seeing her with him made my skin crawl, I knew I couldn’t. I was no longer worthy to be part of her life, because of me and my actions alone.
I had become nothing but a stranger.
Ever since that day
The things I didn’t say
They haunt me
I know that I’m to blame
So go ahead and
Blame it on me, ooh
I know that I’m too late
But I’ll say it anyway
I’m sorry
I’m sorry
Hmm, I’m sorry
Oh-oh-oh-oh, I’m sorry

He would be overprotective! especially towards human kids, like they are much smaller and little stupid weaker than yautja ones
Will hiss at anyone that scares her >:)
His instinct will tell him to train them and go on huntings with them BUT LIKE HE DOESNT KNOW when should he start?? Like how old human pup must be to be ready for first hunt???
I guess since hunting is a huge thing in Yautja culture, first hunt with their kids is like essential for them.
Probably will take them around teenage years, not too late but not to young too
Also growing up around yautjas kid will automaticly be more athletic and skilled than average earth teen
But back to kid being kid. HE WILL MELT if they hold his hand or fidget with his armor! of course its dangerous and sharp! but its so cute! Yautjas are very curious beings too, but they wouldnt randomly come to LEADER of a Clan and start just start fidgeting with his armor/locks
Also he sometimes forgot that human kids take more time to learn basic stuff, how to walk for example. so he will just start walking his normal pace, turn around becasue they didnt hear kid's steps and just see them laying on the floor cuz they fell :(
He would spy on normal human families to see how kids behave and how perents treat them! Yknow Yautjas arent like humans they dont really care about their kids after they learn how to hunt
IF kid will call him space dad OR just dad he will accually have lil heart atack! Please thats so cute!!
Play-fighting all the way, thats how pups learn their strengths in fun ways! also mayyybee he acidently yeeted them too hard and they flew away like 2meters (mayyybeee but totaly on acident!!)(nothing serious happend exept flying child)
Noone can litteraly hurt them(exept their own perent apeareantly) cuz if somone does, death for them :) or at least a lot of hissing and punching
Theres no way in hell that he will braid their hair, he is too tired to learn how to do that! And human hair constantly grows!!why!! pls its everywhere!!! So he would probably cut them short, it grows back anyways so whats the deal?? But if kid really reallllyy loves their hair i guess they can stay in certain lenght BUT they take care of it alone he doenst want to deal wtih it (mental break down due to one event when he tried to do pretty braids and it got tangled and he didnt know what to do)
But even if he really loves them, and treats them as his own, he still wants them to hunt or at least help the clan in someways, he doenst want his kid to grow up to be useless. He will try to find something that would fit them (for example if kid is intrested in crafting they may become a blacksmith in future (ihave no clue if yaujtas have blacksmiths i just took random profession alr))
Overall 9/10 amazing dad material, although he sometimes doenst undestand human body and how it really works
ALL x reader tags are there only so more people can reach it!!!

Finally a new post !! I have been sick for a while now but I am slowly getting better ! Have a drawing of Squirrelflight and Shrewpaw/tail in my au where he lives :)
[The next part of the text might contain spoilers !]
I heard that we might get Squirrelstar in the next book ! I really hope she actually gets to be leader !
I am kind of... Sick of Bramblestar ? Don't get me wrong, he was nice in the first arc as Bramblekit / Bramblepaw, in the second arc he was alright for the first three or four books (to his defense, Squirrelpaw was a handful !), but he just really became... a bit of a jerk afterward in my opinion ? I don't enjoy his relationship with Squirrelflight and I really think they should have broken up for good after the revelation of the Three's parents, because Bramblestar keeps having some... "red flaggy" behaviors :( Like the red flags had already started at the beginning of the relationship when Squirrelflight told Brambleclaw that Hawkfrost could not be trusted, and Brambleclaw ignored her, for her to be right all along ? Or later, Brambleclaw being incredibly mad at Squirreflight for saying the Three were her's because she was literally told to by Starclan to do so, when Brambleclaw did way worst by plotting with Hawkfrost to become the leader of Thunderclan in very sus ways ? And he never, ever told her that Firestar lost a life because of him and his brother ? It's very unfair to me... Idk man, Brambleclaw kind of turned out to not be a good partner :( (I hope everything was understandable there in this part, my english is really rusty when writing !)
I know that the Erins intended to make Bramblestar "the better Tigerstar", him having to show his whole clan that he would never turn out like his father and that he would be the best leader possible but... but it really turned sour to me ? He was meant to be at least a nice, well-meaning character, but somehow in the way he turned out to be a bit of a jerk.
I personally don't really like Bramblestar, but I kind of understand why people like him, he has a cool character arc in the second arc with Hawkfrost, having to fight to show that he is a loyal, kind warrior, and in the end, making the choice to kill his power-hungry brother instead of his leader.
Anyway back to the drawing, I have this au where Shrewpaw doesn't get hit by a car and becomes Squirrelflight's mate. Maybe, just maybe, Shrewpaw was killed off because he was too much of a rival to Brambleclaw ? Seeing from the few interactions between Squirrelpaw and Shrewpaw, they were good friends and Shrewpaw was a gentle, nice boi. I really do think that if Shrewpaw had lived, he would have ended up being Squirrelflight's mate !
I might be a bit rusty on the lore, it's been a long while since I read the books, so if you have any corrections or inputs, don't hesitate to tell me ! :)
Also once again, sorry for any writing mistakes ! And thank you for all your reblogs and support !! It means a lot to me !! :)

Summary: It is well-known that the resources offered by the great clans simply cannot be matched by smaller sects. The greater clans have the most renowned techniques and the best teachers. They have built their reputations over centuries, striving to be the best of the best. It is these clans that most young cultivators aspire to join, and so, they have their pick of recruits and are free to pick the best of the best. To anyone in the cultivation world, it is unquestionable that the great clans reign supreme. It is, thus, quite understandable that even Wen Ruohan— a man largely known for being arrogant and unflappable— looks surprised at the announcement that the first place in the archery tournament has been won by the Head Disciple of the Tingshan He sect. Or, Wei Wuxian is raised in Tingshan He. Some things change. Some do not. Kay's comments: I am always here for stories that talk about the Tingshan He Sect, because I feel like they are too often ignored by this fandom. And here we have Wei Wxuian being adopted into the Tingshan He Sect instead of being taken in by the Jiangs and the young He Su even names him his heir and I enjoy it so much. Wei Wuxian being part of Tingshan He of course changes things, but when the Wen indoctrination happens, him and Lan Wangji still find their way towards each other. Excerpt: Jin Guangshan, whose face had showcased utter incredulity at his son being beaten out by a complete nobody, takes notice of this and his own expression becomes contemplative. Jiang Fengmian looks like he has seen a ghost, but manages to pull his face into a smile. The silence is broken by Nie Mingjue laughing heartily. “Great kid you’ve got there, He-zongzhu,” he declares. He-zongzhu merely inclines his head, accepting the praise. That breaks whatever spell Jiang Fengmian is under. He shakes his head and turns to He-zongzhu. “Congratulations,” he says warmly. “You must be proud of your disciple.” Even now, as more and more clan leaders turn to him, He-zongzhu looks triumphant, and obviously pleased with his disciple. “I am,” he agrees, smiling slightly. “Very proud.”
pov lan wangji, canon divergence, wei wuxian isn't adopted by the jiangs, non-yunmeng wei wuxian, fix-it of sorts, genius wei wuxian, different first meeting, qishan wen indoctrination, sunshot campaign, xuanwu of slaughter cave, pining

I LOVE YOUR ACCOUNT THE MOMENT I DISCOVERED IT.
and if you're open for requests, can you maybe do a ROTTMNT Leo x reader?
It's where April(my queen) has a bestfriend who is also a mutant(which she doesn't know) A kitsune mutant perhaps? Reader went to visit April and unfortunately got into a sticky situation 😔 but ofc reader can fight.
It was when April received a message late from reader saying they got into trouble
So they went to rescue her purrr
But all they encountered was a Mutant fighting one of the member of the Foot clan
👀and Leo was amazed by her.
(It's corny I know, and if you're not interested or uncomfortable with my request. You can completely ignore it! ♥️) - from a queer reader☕
The city lights shone brightly in the night, practically lighting up every corner of New York city- well, nearly every corner. You had been on your way to meet up with your best friend, April O'Neil, at her apartment. Unfortunately, instead of enjoying the nice, chill walk to her place, you had been dragged into a bit of a tight spot.
Having decided to cut through an alley way to get to her apartment quicker, you'd rounded the corner and stopped short at the sight of a foot clan operation. A few grunt ninjas carried boxes containing who knows what from what seemed to be the fire exit of a ... paper shop?? (Ah, it was probably paper in those boxes then.) Into the back of a rather fortified looking vehicle.
Among the foot soldiers stood a bulky man, barking out orders to "Hurry up and load these boxes, we have places to be!" at the soldiers. A bright mystic flame hovered above his head, casting light onto the orange foot print in the center in his face. Had someone stepped in orange paint and kicked him??
Just as the leader looking dude started to turn his head in your direction, you dove behind a dumpster to avoid being seen- just barely hiding in time. Digging into your pocket, you yanked your phone out and shot a quick message to April saying you had gotten into some trouble. Whatever this was, you knew you would be late and did not want your friend to come looking for you and run into this. Just as you finished typing and hit send, a large shadow loomed over you. "Well, well, well, what do we have here?"
Looking back over your shoulder, you flashed a toothy grin in your best attempt to seem nonchalant. "Uh, hi? Just inspecting this dumpster here, yup- seems perfectly fine so I'm just gonna head out-" you said, cringing at the obvious lie (what- you had to say something-) and jumping to your feet to make a break for it.
A large hand grabbed you by the back of your collar and yanked you back before you could make your escape. "Hey, we got some more dumpsters back here that you need to check. Can't have any loose ends, right?" The foot leader said, snapping his fingers to get the other soldiers attention. They dropped the boxes (some looking rather relieved to drop the boxes they had been carrying), each pulling out varying weapons and stalking closer to the two of you.
At this, you reached up to grip at your cloaking device, lips pulling back into a grimace- your teeth looking noticeably... sharper compared to your grin from earlier. "Yeah, I guess you're right." You sighed, before yanking the device off, magic looking mist enveloping you in a bright flash.
~~~
"Guy's we've gotta go!" April shouted, barging into the lair with her phone held high. The turtles looked up from around the lounge, faces stuffed full of pizza. Raph was the first to pipe up, swallowing his pizza down quickly and jumping to his feet.
"What's wrong? A break in? Is Mayhem in trouble again??" The red masked turtle asked, stepping over his brothers to meet April halfway.
"What? No- look my friends in danger. We were supposed to meet up but she just sent me this message saying she got into trouble! We gotta go!" April said, shoving her phone towards the others to show them your message (which specifically told April not to come help).
"I'm sure they're fine, they probably just ran into New York's famous traffic or something." Donnie hummed dismissively after reading your message, taking another bite out of his slice of pizza. April and Raph turned towards him with a glare, to which he turned away from.
"Well, April says we gotta go, so let's go just in case." Leo piped up, rising to his feet and stretching briefly. "And if it's nothing, she can buy us another pizza." He sent a grin towards April before grabbing Donnie and Mikey to haul them up- each hurrying to finish their last slices.
April rolled her eyes at this but turned and rushed out of the lair. "Yeah, yeah, deal- let's just go already!"
~~~
When April had told them about her friend being in possible danger, Leo had expected a mugging at most. Or maybe even some minor mutant trouble- after all, there were still several mutant silverfish on the loose.
What he hadn't been expecting was several foot clan soldiers sprinting out of an alley- screaming.
"Eough boy- this definitely isn't nothing." He grimaced, glancing at his brothers and April as they each pulled out their weapons. "We should probably hurry-"
"No kidding!" April interrupted, readying her bat and charging into the alley.
"Wait- shouldn't we- oh forget it." Leo started, before lifting his katanas and rushing after April- only to skid to a stop right beside her.
There, further in the alley, was a giant fox fighting Foot Brute- and winning. There were several other soldiers scattered around the alley, most unconscious- some scrambling to get up and run away. The foot brute himself was yelling in panic, attempting to block several powerful looking hits from the fox's tails-
Multiple tails.
Mouth agape in shock at the sight, he glanced at April. "By any chance- did your friend say anything about a giant fox mutant?" He asked, turning his gaze back to follow the fox's- admittedly impressive- attacks.
April shook her head, glancing around in search of you. "Nope- definitely no fox mutant mention-" She paused, spotting your cloaking device and bending down to snatch it up.
"Kitsune." Donnie corrected, pulling out his phone to take a quick photo of the mythical creature- for documentary reasons, of course. "That's an actual real life kitsune!" The flash of Donnie's camera going off caught the attention of the kitsune and Foot Brute- both whipping their heads around to see where it came from.
Leo watched as the kitsune locked its gaze on April, freezing for a moment in what looked like a mix of surprise and exasperation, before seemingly remembering it had just been in the middle of a fight. Whipping its head back around to face Foot Brute, it dodged a rather powerful punch with ease before spinning to slam its tails into the brute.
And he went flying.
"Woah-!" Leo jumped back in shock, watching the foot brute sail over their heads and land with a loud crash. A glance around showed that his brothers and April were in equal states of shock- a single hit from those tails was enough to send a mystic powered brute of a man flying like a softball!
Looking back at the kitsune, Leo stared in a mix of awe and slight fear as it walked towards them slowly. "Uh... we don't want any trouble- just looking for her friend." He said, smiling nervously. He could actually feel his heart rate speeding up the more as the creature got closer (though, he wasn't sure if it was just out of fear).
It was beautiful- each of its tails were raised, looking as though they were flowing in invisible wind or water and seemingly harmless (he might have believed them to be, had he not just seen them literally send one of their enemies flying)
Not to mention, its fur was reflecting the city's lights- shimmering slightly in a way that seemed magical. Surely there must have been some mystic element, Leo had never seen a creature's fur shine like that naturally.
Leo snapped out of his train of thought when April waved slightly, the girl stepping back and slowly raising her bat. "Yeah uh- haven't seen her, have you?" She asked, half expecting the kitsune to charge at them.
Instead, it paused with a roll of its eyes and sighed loudly. "Yeah actually- pretty sure I told you not to come, April."
Everyone's jaw dropped at that.
~~~
Plucking your cloaking device from April's hand with careful claws, you fixed it back onto your person. Mystic mist enveloped you for a moment, before revealing your 'human' form to April and her... friends?
April sputtered for a moment, gesturing at you and blinking rapidly before throwing her hands in the air (narrowly missing a turtle with her bat). "Excuse me- hello?! When were you gonna tell me you're a fox-"
"Kitsune."
"- kitsune mutant!?" She asked, correcting herself.
You shrugged at that, chuckling nervously. "I wasn't really planning on telling you- but you weren't going to tell me you had mutant friends either, were you!?" You pointed out, gesturing broadly at the four turtles. The one with the blue mask was staring rather hard at you. Raising an eyebrow at him, he quickly looked away.
Well, that wasn't awkward at all.
April cleared her throat, "Well- uh, yeah you got me there." She admitted, rubbing the back of her neck briefly before smiling at you. "You looked cool, by the way! Where'd you learn to fight like that?"
You glanced around the alley way littered with several foot soldiers- some of them starting to stir. "I'll tell you about it later- we should probably get out of here before they wake up."
"You can come to our place!" the blue masked turtle blurted, voice a little too high. Everyone looked at him in varying degrees of surprise. He cleared his throat at this and put on a rather winning smile. "I mean, if you want to. Any friend of April's is a friend of ours, right guys?"
His red clad brother nodded in agreement. "Yeah- plus, you just took out a bunch of those foot guys no problem- and you're a mutant. That gives ya the all clear in my book!" He turned towards a manhole cover, and gestured at it. "C'mon, we'll lead the way."
You smiled at this, beginning to follow after them. "Thanks that sounds pretty good, I appreciate it."
While waiting for them to move the manhole cover, you noticed the blue clad turtle step beside you.
Waving, he flashed you a bright- slightly nervous looking, smile. "Hey, I'm Leo, by the way." He greeted, sticking his hand out towards you. "You looked pretty awesome fighting out there."
You returned the smile, reaching out to hold his hand and shake it as you told him your name. "Thanks, cool swords." You added, glancing at the katanas strapped to his shell.
Leo spun around slightly to give you a better look at them. "Thanks- maybe you can try them out sometime, if you could teach me some of those moves you were doing?" He offered.
You blinked in surprise, pausing for a moment before grinning. "Sure, sounds like fun." You agreed, taking him up on that offer. Who knows, he seemed like a chill dude- it could be fun. Plus, the smile he gave you at that was admittedly pretty cute.
With that, Leo stepped aside to let you go down into the sewer before him, reaching a hand out to help you in.
How sweet!
Hey! I hope you enjoyed, sorry for the super long wait!
This ended up being way longer than I thought it would be. I don't usually write long one shots, so I hope it turned out alright!
oooo for the AU Ask Game, an alternate universe where JYL marries someone else who isn't Jin Zixuan? (your choice on who she marries and why!)
Oooh this is a fun one! All right, here we go... this might change EVERYTHING lol
Who does JYL marry? There is absolutely no question in my mind that the best option in terms of inter-sect connections, and a desire on JC and WWX's parts that she be safe and cared for, is for her to marry Nie Mingjue. She would have had a chance to get to know him during the Sunshot campaign, and we all know NMJ drinks respect -women-juice for breakfast - and is a big softie, like look what he lets his brother get away with >.< So yeah, JYL goes to Qinghe and gets a spare didi out of the deal!
But why does she marry? Because yes, she still has feelings for JZXuan, but he's still a man-child who doesn't know a good thing when he sees it ;) But seriously, we have YMJ which is still rebuilding after the war and likely getting more and more in debt to get the supplies and manpower to fix up Lotus Pier, not to mention attracting new disciples to feed and clothe, so they'd need an alliance with another great sect - one that's stable financially and could even help YMJ. Gusu is still rebuilding as well, so they're out, and we've eliminated the Jin. THankfully Qinghe is a solid option all around (as stated above). And JYL has known from the time she was young that she would marry for an alliance, not for love - she would be the one to sit JC and WWX down to tell them it needs to be done (when they hear her suggestion of NMJ, that's the thing that gets them on board - they would have fought just about anyone else).
So at Koi Tower, things might be a little more uncertain because these clans are based on hereditary hierarchy, and without an heir along Jin Zixuan's line, his position is uncertain even if he's the only legitimate son. So JGS pushes for a marriage - even worse when he sees Qin Su's pursuit of JGY, because he'll be DAMNED if he allows JGY to marry before JZXuan. Sadly, I have no idea who he'd marry, probably the daughter of a smaller sect's leader (Yao or Ouyang maybe), but it would be a rushed deal and will make poor JZXuan miserable - but he'll do it because it's what's expected of him, and even though he will not love his wife, he will still give her far more respect than his father gave his mother (I know, low bar, but the boy is TRYING).
So with JYL engaged to NMJ by the time of the Phoenix Mountain Hunt, things go a little different - yes WWX will bust out the Wen remnants and fuck out of dodge, but JYL will go to NMJ and ask him to help WWX (at the very least give him a chance to explain instead of denouncing him with everyone else). This turns the tide for many things because once NMJ sees the conditions of the Burial Mounds and what's left of the Wen, he will be amenable to helping - but will do so under the condition that WWX give up demonic cultivation (and in fact he suggests Nie cultivation as an alternative - this will lead to a sad moment when WWX FINALLY comes up with a proper story and claim that WZL melted his core to explain that he's core-less, and after much crying all around, they can finally move forward from this mess).
So the Nie will lend their protection to the Wen in the Burial Mounds and actually suggest they move up into Qinghe - not by the Unclean Realm, but he will give them land to live on that isn't full of resentful energy, and they will have QHN's protection. This is good, and in return, a certain doctor meets NMJ and will start researching his condition to treat (and hey, if you wanna have fun, have her join NMJ & JYL, I'm easy ;)
So yeah! One change and everything changes like dominos :D
Thank you for the ask!
Can't remember? Irida mentioned that Adaman forgot about Mayumi too. What gives?
Volo looks troubled, his fingers worrying at his necklace as he stares into the void.
"I.... I don't know... it's happening more..."
Adaman frowns, looking up, his eyes still glowing sapphire.
"I remember everything since then though... it shouldn't still be and issue... right?"
Didn't want to derail that last post since it's specifically about novel canon, but it got me thinking about the ramifications of the changes that the drama makes:
CQL Mianmian is a Jin disciple. I like this change overall because it facilitates her being a larger part of the narrative and implies that Jin Zixuan has a life outside of being That Rich Guy Wei Wuxian Hates. Still, as is also the case with Meng Yao and Lan Xichen due to them meeting earlier, it means that Jin Zixuan is defending someone already dear to him rather than protecting a stranger simply because it's the right thing to do. Don't shrug off his heroism yet, though, because...
A nameless Jin disciple is the one who tries to hand over Mianmian. Jin Zixuan (and only Jin Zixuan) strikes him down and says in disgust that he can't believe the Jin clan contains such cowards, or something like that. However, Mianmian herself reminds Jin Zixuan when they're giving up their swords that they're under orders from their sect leader to comply with whatever the Wen clan asks of them. Jin Zixuan's choice to defend Mianmian is potentially in defiance of his father's directive. (Why is Jin Zixuan willing to disobey his dad here but stays awkwardly silent during his family's BS at the Phoenix Mountain hunt and conference later on? Well, his dad's not in the room with him here.)
Su She is not involved here, as Lan Wangji is the sole representative from Gusu Lan. The selfishness/cowardice of trying to feed Mianmian to a monster is replaced with his (more socially unacceptable in-universe but IMO more sympathetic to the viewer) revealing the Cold Pond Cave secret. There aren't any Lans standing by as nobody but Lan Wangji does the right thing.
The hostages generally show a lot of solidarity! After Wen Chao punts Wei Wuxian deeper into the cave, everyone else climbs down after him. None of them responds to Wen Chao shouting questions from up above, forcing the Wen guards to climb down to their level to investigate. The Jin guy attacking Mianmian is an outlier, indicating a problem with Lanling Jin culture rather than the jianghu as a whole. They cooperate well when it's time to band together and escape!
So the takeaway in CQL canon isn't that everyone is a coward or overly concerned with politics except for the protagonist, his love interest, and Jin Zixuan for some reason, but more like... here are these young people and future leaders who are fully capable of acting together for the good of the group. They refuse to comply with their captors despite being unarmed, and they'll convince the older generation to take action against the Wen clan. (Nie Mingjue, the only sect leader who's part of the younger generation without an older relative's influence, has already been in open conflict with them.) And isn't it a shame, then, that Jin Guangshan--and his sect culture that would've excused feeding one of his own disciples to a demon turtle--is going to crush all of this.
*I initially assumed, when I started making this post, that Cloud Recesses in the novel gets burned after the indoctrination in retaliation for Lan Wangji's part in killing the Xuanwu of Slaughter. But the wiki timeline has the indoctrination still coming after Cloud Recesses is attacked? If that's the case, how do the Lan have that many disciples to send?
I'm curious: Wouldn't MC's disappearance stir questions in the omatikaya? I mean, she was presented as their third mate and even birthed their *technically first* children and twins at that. Would her disappearance cause the clan to distrust them in some way? Do they own up to what they did, or is it sort of an open secret that everyone knows why she left, and they just choose not to comment on it? I'm sorry if I'm bothering you in any way. You've just got me hooked on your writing, and I've been brainstorming like crazy after reading yawnetu
the omaticaya would DEFINITELY question where reader is once they realise she’s gone. who knows what jake and neytiri would say to them to calm them down,
“she died in an accident while foraging”
“AND THE BABIES??”
“uhh…”
and obviously reader was a staple person in the tribe, she had friends, she cared for children, she had a strong role in the clan. so her disappearing so suddenly after having her twins is 🤔🤔 sus
if they do find out the real truth there would definitely be some distrust between the two and the clan, including the humans because why?? why would they do this to her?? but if they already somewhat knew what was going on, there will still be distrust but what could they do against their clan leader? toruk makto?
mo’at remains angry
and i don’t mind you brainstorming in my inbox! i welcome it wholeheartedly
In another life, it was Goldenflare who was made medicine cat apprentice after Wildfang's death. Sunwish continued her training as a warrior.
...
When Sunwish felt Scorchstar's claws sink into her shoulders, a strange sense of clarity washed over her. Even as her back was slammed against the harsh stone terrain of the mountain FallenClan called home, Sunwish knew, in her heart, that this confrontation was inevitable.
"Nettlestem was wrong to have chosen you as her successor," Scorchstar hissed, claws digging deeper into Sunwish's flesh. "It should have been--" Sunwish's claws flashed, slicing across Scorchstar's throat before either molly had time to think. Scorchstar's word trailed off with a strangled noise and in a few moments she slid off Sunwish, collapsing beside her.
Sunwish tensed, slowing rolling back to her paws. She stared. What had she done? Surely, Scorchstar hadn't actually been meaning to kill her. No, Sunwish growled, glaring at the wheezing leader whose remaining two lives were draining like sand from an hourglass. I did what I had to. I was defending myself.
That's what Sunwish continued to tell herself even as she went back for help. Even as she lied, claiming she and Scorchstar had been attacked by rogues.
...
Sunwish isn't sure what she was expecting StarClan to look like. Perhaps a bustling crowd of cats, kits merrily chasing each other and elders lounging beside clear pools of water. What was presented to her was an eerily quiet meadow. Dread flooded her chest. Was this StarClan's way of rejecting her?
"Sunwish," a voice called, causing Sunwish's gaze to snap to a previously unseen figure. Wildfang. Wildfang's gaze was narrowed, stern but not quite cold. "I'm surprised you came."
"I was FallenClan's deputy at the time of Scorchstar's death. I'm here to receive my nine lives," Sunwish replied frigidly.
"You know what I mean," Wildfang snapped, growing agitated. "You were never meant to be a warrior, let alone deputy."
"And who decided that?" Sunwish retorted. "I never wanted to be a medicine cat!"
"It doesn't matter what you want. StarClan decided you would be my successor, yet you willfully ignored my message, allowing Goldenflare to step forward in your stead."
Sunwish scoffed. "Then why didn't you send the message to Scorchstar? I'm sure she would have been happy to force me into the role."
"I considered it," Wildfang admitted. "But I believed, wrongfully, that you would have the integrity to do what it takes. Perhaps if you had, Morningbloom wouldn't have perished."
Sunwish recoiled, incredulous. "Goldenflare did everything he could. There's no proof that I would have been able to save her." Still, a sliver of doubt hung in her mind. Was Morningbloom's death her fault?
"There's still time to-"
"No." Sunwish shook her head. "Either give me one of my lives or leave. I won't sit here while you chastise me like a wayward kit."
Wildfang sighed, disappointment glistening in her gaze. "Very well." She padded forward, resting her nose on Sunwish's head. "I give you this life for compassion. Don't let bitterness cloud your judgement. Some things will always be out of your control."
When the sharp pain from receiving her first life had faded, Sunwish opened her eyes to see Wildfang gone. In her place stood Nettlestem. Nettlestem's gaze was weary, a frown etched onto her face. She had been the cat to find Sunwish, bringing her into the clan with promises of adventure and comradery, the life of a warrior.
Sunwish opened and closed her mouth a few times before finally setting on: "I'll look after Otterslip." The tom had been crushed by his grief, losing not only his mothers but also Ivyleaf (who Sunwish had always suspected to be Otterslip's birth mother) in the span of just a few moons.
Nettlestem nodded solemnly, stepping forward. "I give you this life for judgement. Use yours well." As Nettlestem padded away, Sunwish was tempted to call out to her, but held back.
When Morningbloom stepped forward, Sunwish felt her breath catch in her throat. Morningbloom's gaze held a deep sadness, but also empathy. "Sunwish. I am sorry for everything that has been thrust upon your shoulders. I appreciate the kindness and friendship you've shown Goldenflare." Morningbloom purred softly, her gaze growing wet. "With the way Honeykit follows you around, I'd assume he's hoping to follow in your footsteps one day."
Sunwish lowered her gaze. It was true. She had been spending a lot of time helping out Goldenflare, as the tom was torn between his grief and his duties as medicine cat. There were many days when Sunwish, to her dismay, had a gaggle of kits following her around everywhere, demanding for early battle training and exciting stories. She had a fondness for each of Goldenflare and Morningbloom's kits, as well as Toro's two. Sunwish was especially close with Honeykit, not missing the way the kit watched her with open admiration. "I'm planning on mentoring Honeykit myself," Sunwish murmured.
Morningbloom smiled gently, padding forward. "I give you this life for new beginnings. Don't let the past haunt your every pawstep. I know you will do great things."
A few moments after Morningbloom had slunk back into the meadow, Ivyleaf appeared, seeming in a hurry. "I give you this life for forgiveness--for yourself, and for others." Rather than feel intense pain, as expected, Sunwish only felt a sensation akin to a light breeze ruffling her fur. When she opened her mouth to say something, Ivyleaf interrupted. "Tell Otterslip he is loved."
Sunwish's remaining lives were given in a blur, a rush of cats Sunwish didn't recognize either congratulating her or granting her a life only begrudgingly, until at last only one life remained.
Sunwish's ears immediately pinned at the sight of Scorchstar, who regarded Sunwish coldly. "It appears StarClan has deemed you worthy of nine lives, then."
"Brilliant observation," Sunwish snapped in reply, temper flaring. Why couldn't some other leader from some other clan give her her final life?
When Scorchstar took a step forward, Sunwish instinctively backed up, causing Scorchstar to let out a scoff. "I can't very well give you a life from five fox-lengths away, can I?"
Gaze baleful, Sunwish stalked forward instead, stopping only when her nose was practically touching Scorchstar's own. Satisfied, Scorchstar began: "I give you this life for wisdom, which in your youth you have not yet achieved." Sunwish bristled, nearly toppling over from the jagged spike of pain the life caused her. "With that," Scorchstar drawled. "I name you Sunstar and grant you guardianship of FallenClan."
Sunstar fought the wave of dizzyness that threatened to consume her as droves of StarClan cats drifted out of the meadow, all chanting her new name. When Scorchstar turned to pad off, Sunstar called out, "Scorchstar, wait!" The former leader turned back towards Sunstar, expression unreadable. "I--" Sunstar cleared her throat. "I'll be thrice the leader you ever were. Under my leadership, FallenClan will prosper. No one will ever have to wonder if they belong or if they are loved." If Scorchstar heard the note of pain in Sunstar's voice, she made no indication of it. "I will spend every last one of my new lives defending FallenClan. And I will honor your memory. We have never seen eye to eye, but that doesn't mean I will tarnish your name. The clan will continue to believe you died a hero at the claws of some rogue."
When Sunstar finished, Scorchstar only wrinkled her nose in distaste, unimpressed. "You mean the clan will never know that you murdered me?"
"I killed you in self defense. If I hadn't acted, you would have killed me," Sunstar spat, tail lashing.
"Spare me the theatrics. You aren't half so noble as you pretend you are. It's your own legacy you don't want tarnished."
Sunstar could feel StarClan fading as she began to wake up. Still, she pressed on. "I have done only what I've thought to be right. Can you say the same?"
Sunstar was awake before she could hear Scorchstar's reply. Goldenflare was watching her with wide eyes. Sunstar gave the tom a reassuring smile. Later, she would tell him about Morningbloom and all the other lost friends she had seen. For now, they would begin the journey back to camp. Whatever Scorchstar says, Sunstar was determined to do her best for FallenClan. Any lingering doubt she had was buried deep down, somewhere she'd only look in her darkest moments.
