I PROMISE TO BELIEVE:
ONE DAY,
IN A LUSH FOREST,
LONG AFTER THIS LIFE,
I'LL SEE YOU AGAIN,
6 TWIN PAIRS OF EARS
RUSHING TO GREET ME.
I LOVE YOU. I love you.

The Swedish Vallhund is an ancient and rare breed, developed as a herding dog over 1000 years ago. It very nearly went extinct in the 1940s but was saved and is now growing in popularity. Since Breyer, Schleich, and the like haven’t yet produced a Vallhund sculpt, I decided to rework a Breyer Pembroke Welsh corgi into this red sable Vallhund, now dubbed Värja, which means “shortsword”. He has entirely new ears and tail, and a lengthened and resculpted muzzle, and he’s been repainted in Earth Pigments and acrylics. The pictures don’t do him justice at all; while I am very, very tempted to keep this one, he’s available at https://www.etsy.com/listing/1388480260/varja-custom-red-sable-swedish-vallhund - take him home before I change my mind!

Hello acti-veg 👋
Over time, I was certain that I put together a life that greatly reduced the amount of pain for animals by slowly building up habits to last. I wonder now if I succeeded with those intentions and I'd like to hear your input 🤔 I have 3 cat companions, and with all of them being meat eaters, I question if I’m still in accordance with the vegan label. It’s a bit tricky for me. I guess what I'm really asking for is advice if possible. Thank you for reading ❤️
I don't know what advice I can offer here to be honest anon - those cats are already in your care, there is no other ethical option than to continue to meet their health and nutritional needs, and that will involve a diet which includes meat.
If you wanted to get a new cat (presumably a rescue) you could wrestle with these ethical questions, some vegans may decide that rescuing results in an overall net good, because those cats already exist and would be eating meat regardless, and some may conclude that they don't want to indirectly fund animal agriculture through buying cat food. That's really up to your own judgement and your own ethics.
What I can say categorically though is that you are still a vegan. There are many, many vegans with companion animals who eat meat, that doesn't make them any less vegan. If you're uncomfortable with feeding your cats meat that is a seperate issue and you should cconsider that if you opt to adopt more animals in future, but either decision certainly wouldn't determine whether or not you're vegan.

hey i am thinking about getting a corn snake! i do not care what morph it is. i want one like the one i met at partner's old house, who was just really friendly and chill and fun to play with. that snake hung around me for like forty minutes and just seemed to be having a good time, and i want a pet like that.
how does one find such a creature? it seems like y'all breeders know your animals, but it's hen's teeth to find out "what's its personality?" thanks for any insight!,
Hey friend!
So the reason most breeders aren't comfortable telling you a snake's personality is twofold.
One, most of the time you're buying a baby and their personalities are still under construction. The experiences that they have while growing play a huge part in their final temperament. We can generally have a fairly good idea of what they're going to be like as adults with continued positive handling experiences, but even a perfect little angel baby in the hands of an especially inexperienced or flakey handler can grow up to be anxious and defensive. Similarly, a flighty and nervous baby can grow up to be a super chill and sweet snake in the hands of someone who is patient and careful. That's not always the case, though, and sometimes a snake is just a jerk from the moment they're born and there's not much you can do about it.
Two, many breeders focus on desirable color morphs and/or have large numbers of snakes that they're breeding. There are a few breeders who focus on temperament over morph, and @fractiousrvt is a really great example of someone who does both. She breeds with focus on color and also breeds specifically for pet-quality temperaments. With big-name, high-volume breeders, though, they would need to spend time evaluating their snakes' personalities with humans and then selecting breeding matches that emphasize those with gentle temperaments. Frankly, they usually don't make that a priority as they either don't have the time or the interest, and they're not acknowledging the number of folks who choose corn snakes as companion animals rather than breeding investments.
If you're looking for a very sweet pet snake I recommend buying a yearling or young juvenile with a more established personality, or working with a small-potatoes breeder who knows their snakes very well and can help you choose a baby from sweet parents who has a high chance of being a chill adult.
I hope this helps you to find the perfect companion snake and adventure buddy! Good luck in your search!

My family-animals are still willing to be around me when I'm low. Maybe less so when I'm explosive, understandably. That they forgive me for that in whatever animal equivalent to forgiveness there is is very humbling. They don't just forget because of small brains that this human isn't all-the-time-stable-and-soothing. They just accept it.
I don't deserve this. Choosing a space so close to me, being so vulnerable by choosing to rest next to me. Knowing that no matter how angry I get about the dog eating the litter or my favorite sunflower seed bread (entire loaf, EVERY TIME), I won't abandon her over it. That I'm the least pleasant person in the house and her tail still wags when I come home, and she wants affection from me first and foremost.
That my aloof, eldritch horror cats will actually seek me for affection and it feels like a gift and that I'm chosen. "Despite your flaws YOU are worthy to scritch my chin, because you do it best." As if my flaws never mattered. What a gift.

As someone who has cared for reptiles and amphibians in the past, I have a strong desire to take care of these creatures again, but I'm struggling to find a way to do this that doesn't inherently support the breeding of these animals into existence. Adopt don't shop is great advice for pretty much any small mammal that's likely to be in abundance at shelters like cats, dogs, rabbits, ferrets, guinea pigs, etc. but for fish or lizards or frogs or tortoises? Would it be something I have to like, Craigslist search for from individuals? If I can't find a way to adopt these animals, I won't have them in my house which is ultimately fine, I just miss having a scaly friend around LOL

i find a lot of the time when my bird starts to show aggressive behaviour it helps to stop for a second and remember childhood and how unhappy the way the assumed right to intrude and 'correct' me often made me feel, how even very small children and presumably also animals with complicated social structures can be keenly aware of the power relations and lack of respect for their personhood involved in a way a lot of adults just don't even notice, and mostly don't enact on purpose.
Anyway an animal is not a child but in a lot of way the caregiver relationship is similar in its power relationship to an adult-child one. I'm physically stronger, I am the one in control of her environment and food and, and, and-- or I am if I'm not careful to make sure I'm not and give her choices.
I usually find stopping, remembering the powerless anger involved in childhood and thinking about that + acting accordingly is very helpful in handling parrots in a way that doesn't lead to stressful confrontations (for both parties!).

Playful Shelter Cat | SPCA | New York
Playful Shelter Cat | SPCA | New York
I spent several years volunteering at our local animal shelter. I would take photographs of the animals there that they could use to show what animals are available for adoption on their website and social media. High quality photograph go a long way to helping shelter pets find homes. I would really like to bring this back as part of my regular work in photography. This cute cat was so…

Ingrid Newkirk asks, “How did we get the Easter Bunny?”
I celebrate Easter as a secular holiday. One of the saddest ways that people celebrate Easter is by giving rabbits as gifts.
Rabbits are the third most commonly surrendered animal at animal shelters, behind only dogs and cats. I work with many different animal shelters and rescues, and after Easter we have an influx of rabbit surrenders. This happens during kitten season. We are bursting at the seams and overwhelmed.
Never give animals as gifts. If you want to give someone a rabbit for Easter make it a plush one. Those of us involved in the homeless animal crisis and the rabbits will thank you.

The Unlikely Alliance: How Cats Became Our Feline Friends
In the grand tapestry of human history, the domestication of animals stands out as a pivotal chapter. Among these domesticated animals, cats hold a unique place. Unlike dogs, which were actively bred and trained for specific roles, cats wandered into our lives on their own terms. This story isn’t just about domestication; it’s about mutual respect and the formation of an unlikely alliance. Let’s…

It’s possible that  elderly people who now find themselves alone and a little bored might benefit from the company of one of the four birds covered in this article, Rainbow Lorikeets, Eclectus Parrots, Crimson Rosellas, and Blue-fronted Amazon Parrots. These birds are all quite amazing in their own ways.  Let me know what you think, https://www.mintonnareviews.com/four-truly-amazing-companion-birds/

The Compassionate Choice: Why Adopting from Your Local Humane Society is Better than Buying Pets from Breeders
Shaina Tranquilino
December 8, 2023
Tumblr media
Choosing to bring a new furry friend into your home is an exciting and memorable experience. However, it's essential to consider the source of your pet carefully. While purchasing pets from breeders might seem convenient or glamorous, adopting from your local humane society offers unparalleled benefits for both you and the countless animals in need. In this blog post, we'll explore why adoption should be your first choice when welcoming a new companion into your life.
1. Saving Lives: By adopting from a local humane society, you become part of a compassionate movement that saves lives every day. These organizations provide shelters and care for countless abandoned, neglected, or surrendered animals who are desperately seeking loving homes. By choosing adoption over buying from breeders, you directly contribute to reducing euthanasia rates and making a significant difference in animal welfare.
2. Wide Variety of Animals: Humane societies often have an incredible range of animals available for adoption. Whether you're looking for a specific breed or simply open to finding your perfect match, there's an excellent chance that your local shelter has exactly what you're looking for. From energetic puppies and kittens to mature dogs and cats, rabbits, guinea pigs, hamsters, birds, or even reptiles – the selection is vast.
3. Lower Costs: Adopting from a humane society typically comes at a fraction of the cost compared to buying pets from breeders. Adoption fees usually include initial vaccinations, spaying/neutering services (if not already done), microchipping, and sometimes even training classes or behavioural consultations. On the other hand, acquiring a pet through a breeder can involve exorbitant expenses such as purchase price, veterinary costs for initial checkups and shots – which can add up significantly.
4. Healthier Pets: Pets available for adoption undergo thorough health examinations, ensuring they are in optimal condition before being placed with their forever families. Additionally, shelters often provide necessary vaccinations and preventive treatments for common ailments such as fleas, ticks, and worms. Conversely, some breeders may prioritize quantity over quality, leading to potential health issues in pets acquired from them.
5. Supportive Community: Adopting from a local humane society allows you to become part of a supportive community of fellow pet owners who share your love and enthusiasm for animals. Many shelters organize events and activities that promote responsible pet ownership, offer educational resources, training programs, and even post-adoption support. This sense of belonging fosters lifelong relationships while providing an invaluable network of information and assistance.
Choosing adoption over buying pets from breeders is not only a compassionate decision but also one that positively impacts the lives of countless animals in need. By opening your heart and home to a shelter animal, you save lives, enjoy a wide variety of choices, spend less money upfront on fees and medical expenses, receive healthier pets, and join a supportive community dedicated to animal welfare.
Next time you're ready to add a new member to your family, take the time to visit your local humane society or animal rescue organization. Together, we can make this world a better place for our furry friends – one adoption at a time!

New Pet
So it isn't the pet I wanted, but its the pet I needed. Alligator Lizard has moved into the little wooden box and we are now sharing the greenhouse in harmony. Very strange alliance.
Tumblr media
Related: no bunny could withstand the heat in the greenhouse anyway. The high in there was 122 degrees according to my new digital thermometer. Current temp 98.2.
