Some of the Pride Allies Variants are up

General housekeeping before I proceed with the Roast Fest

I want to make this explicitly clear: it is not my intention to hate on the artists themselves nor their art skills or anything along those lines.

Betsy Cola and Davi Go are both extremely talented and skilled artists. Support their work. Art is fucking hard and its even harder to actually get paid for it.

Betsy Cola is a queer Filipina and has an Instagram Page (but no online shop for prints). Lots of fun retro style (think 50s-60s-70s Pop Art)

Davi Go does have an INPRNT with lots of Marvel and DC Characters. Like nine different Emma Frost prints alone. A couple of lovely Laura Kinney and much more. For fine Art Prints, artists earn like 50% of the sale, I'm pretty sure.

I personally have no idea what goes into getting contracted to do any cover by Marvel, but I'm sure it was absolutely thrilling to get to do ANY work by a big company such as Marvel, where so many would get to see something I had made. I also have no idea how much an artist is told when they are contracted to make something. (Do they get told what it's for, or are they just given a generalized prompt? I truly have no idea)

I do know, that personally for me, doing ANYTHING of that caliber would be a dream come true. I've been reading comic books since I was five/six years old. While I only make shitty little fans arts and the occasional fanfic, if by some astronomical chance, I was offered to write or do a cover, I would absolutely jump on the chance. Or at least strongly consider it.

I am specifically critiquing Marvel's decisions as corporation to even come up with and sign off on something as obnoxious (and frankly, insulting) as "Pride Allies" for a variant series. Especially considering the overarching fact that historically Marvel has had its fair share of issues regarding its treatment of its queer characters -- lack of consistent appearances/storytelling, questionable treatment/writing choices, and blatant rainbow washing during Pride month to give a few generalizations (pick your favorite example, there's a lot). Sometimes its enjoyable to poke fun at company's ridiculous marketing ideas.

Much like the fact last winter they did a "Ski Chalet" variant series with skiing and snow activities, yet somehow didn't find an artist to do a variant of their ONE CANON OLYMPIC SKIIER.

But I digress.

In Summary: the act of creation is beautiful, don't be a douche canoe. Being punk is anti-establishment, not anti-people.

Davi Go does a pretty Northstar, I'll give him that.

But why is Spider-man here? What are they even doing? I know JP has canonically crushed on chatty dumbasses *cough cough* Iceman *cough cough* but I don't see the point of this pairing.

What are they even doing? Did Parker get lost on his way to the Pride Parade? Lmao.

Rachel is very pretty. Looks very powerful here.

They both wear red, I'll give them that.

I genuinely do NOT see the point in pairing up a queer character with a random more popular Marvel hero. I repeat my question, who the hell signed off on this?

In my personal opinion, its just new lows in performative allyship and rainbow washing and whatever kind of marketing you wanna call it.

Submission for DDE Prompt Fest 23 - prompt 318: Matt likes to touch Frank's hair after he shaved it to a few mm, because he likes the sensation.

I'm still seriously bad at tagging, here's part of the summary: Frank likes things quiet. Quiet is much more preferable than the noise that Red's new friends make. Frank gets on with some of them better than others. He still hasn't apologised for shooting Wade, but the idiot deserved it.

2022 Writing Evaluation

hi i dug this up from the archives of this time last year because it was fun to do and i wanted to give other writers a chance to reflect if they’re so inclined! so here is my 2022 writing self-evaluation. point of order, i’m mostly filling this out specifically for my bellawritess ao3 and all the rpf stuff i write, not my other secret ao3 where i put fics written about fictional media. okay, onward.

1. number of stories posted on ao3: 23!

2. word count posted for this year: 117,763

3. fandoms i wrote for: 5sos, atl, and 1d (but also teen wolf, mcu spiderman, hawkeye, and daredevil)

4. pairings: cake, lashton, malum, jalex, narry, halex (you know that very popular harry styles/alex gaskarth ship), and mirry.

5. story with the most kudos/bookmarks/comments: the answer to all three of these criteria is a change of heart and a silver lining, my winter 2021-22 fic exchange fic, which makes me very happy. i cannot believe that fic was from last year, january feels like forever ago but i love love love that specific work so much, in large part because of how much i was able to tailor it to meg as reciprocation for all the times and ways she tailored things to me.

6. work i’m most proud of (and why): i’m gonna say a three-way tie between (1) i got a radar for trouble (and you’re a renegade), (2) between all the gasping i finally breathe, and (3) play it again and again and again. #1 is the cruel summer prequel fic that i always half-jokingly said i would one day write and then surprised myself by actually writing, and i am incredibly proud of how well i managed to recreate the vibes of cruel summer fic but also write a prequel that made sense with the direction the actual cruel summer story took. #2 was one of the first legit fics i wrote to break myself out of this big 5sos fic slump i had been in (consequence of a perfect storm of a lot of small things), and i may have gotten lost in the metaphor sauce but i maintain that the metaphors are really fucking good which was gratifying to me as a writer who had felt like maybe i’d lost my real writing skill before then. #3 is the christmas fic i wrote for hazel, and what i’m most proud of there is that i fuckin actually wrote that. my love for my friends carried me through the warfields of attempting to romanticize christmas, and in so doing i think i actually learned something about christmas, ugh i feel like i’m getting less jewish every second i spend talking about this but i really am proud of myself for writing that and even moreso because i think i tailored it pretty well to hazel’s taste and that made me happy. it was like an extra challenge i set myself and then i did it well.

7. work i’m least proud of (and why): pretty much all the prompt fics from this year’s batch, tbh. this malum roommates one is really funny if you imagine you’re a fly on the wall of mine and megs’s dorm room but it’s the most nothing fic on the planet otherwise, and you’re my whole house is cute but again, literally nothing. unfortunately these were written while i was binge watching seinfeld which probably contributed to how much they were About Nothing but that’s no excuse.

8. share or describe a favorite review you received: i’m super terrible at remembering comments and stuff that people leave me but a few days ago i got a comment on yssdf saying it was one of the best love stories they’d ever read and that just about knocked my socks off

9. a time when writing was really, really hard: from aboutttt february to september, which is pretty obvious when you notice that i didn’t post a fic (on this account) between march 18th and september 27th of this year. i hit that aforementioned slump in a big way and i was also busy with life stuff and i was also just. unmotivated and uninspired! but in that time i wasn’t really doing a lot of writing to struggle with. something that was actively hard to write was definitely parts of the jet lag songfic i wrote for the fest. megs and hazel both experienced various aspects of my intense battle with Plot and Characters. it was not pretty.

10. a scene or character you wrote that surprised you: luke in the muke college beach fic!!! he was so much more gutsy than (a) he’s usually written and (b) i expected him to be. and tbh, michael in that fic also kind of surprised me, although less so because he was based on a real guy i know, so it was more like trying to delve into the fictionalized mind of a real human being i go to school with and understand what it is that makes him only APPEAR to be an asshole and in reality maybe actually have a heart of gold. if that makes sense. character work but the character is based on a real person who is based on a real person. meta af.

11. a favorite excerpt of your writing: ill be the first to admit im a sucker for when there’s a song playing in the in-universe fic scene and then the lyrics tie into the moment. i have that in two fics that i can think of, so here they both are:

(1) from everywhere, everything:

Luke is trembling when he looks up at Ashton, but he only nods. Tilts their foreheads together.

Say it’s me that you’ll adore— Sinatra sings, and then there’s a scratch and a crack, and the whole record player crashes through the glass tabletop.

(the end of that lyric is “for now and evermore” !!!! HOW FUCKED IS THAT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!)

(2) from faith in a stolen car (the jean jacket songfic i just wrote for the fest):

Calum’s rumbling laugh shook both of them as Springsteen vowed I’ll love you with all the madness in my soul, and Ashton sang along in a silly voice so Calum knew he meant it with everything he had.

[and]

He turned up the music, and ‘No Surrender’ blared out of the surround sound. The lines that had been stampeding around Ashton’s brain since Calum had first swept him up in tonight’s teenage delinquency now screamed against the wind in his ears.

Ashton smiled wider than his face could handle and screamed right back.

“WE MADE A PROMISE WE SWORE WE’D ALWAYS REMEMBER,” Calum’s voice joined his, and together they beat back the deafening gales; “NO RETREAT, BABY, NO SURRENDER!”

12. how did you grow as a writer this year? this year i learned the importance of conflict. “hey bella, didn’t you learn that in seventh grade english?” YES but then i IGNORED it and now i have relearned it in a fanfiction context and in the broader sense that i now understand every story has a conflict and more than that, a story needs a conflict, because that’s what drives it. after i finished writing those prompt fics, i thought, damn, these are fun but nothing is fucking happening in any of them. i wonder why that is! and then i realized. there was no conflict. i was writing “scenes” but nothing interesting within those scenes, so there was nothing pulling the characters from point A (the start of the scene) to point B (its conclusion) and as a result they all became meandering blocks of text with no goal or direction. anyway. point being that i have embraced conflict as a necessary factor in storytelling and i hope this will mean no more seinfeldian fics, prompt or otherwise.

13. how do you hope to grow next year? yes <3 jk but i sincerely have no idea, i don’t have any current ideas on how i plan to grow next year i just very much intend to grow. how it happens is anyone’s guess

14. who was your greatest positive influence this year as a writer (could be another writer or beta or cheerleader or muse etc etc)? gotta be a tie between megs @igarbagecannoteven and hazel @allsassnoclass. obviously megs is my #1 rubber duck roomie, whether she likes it or not, and she has helped me solve more problems than i am comfortable admitting. actually i’m very comfortable admitting it megs has untangled a myriad of fic knots on many occasions this year she is the best rubber duck in the world. and hazel has become my virtual rubber duck which is great because it means i have all my bases covered! truly these two are a dynamic duo because they will both just let me sit there and complain and yet always have the right thing to say.

15. anything from your real life show up in your writing this year? as always, a great many things. make the same mistakes ‘til the morning breaks and the muke college beach fic are both inspired by things that happened with this one guy i know from school (yes, the same guy, and yes, he is represented by michael both times, and no, i do not know why it happened like that). the latter came from just a single snap i saw on his snap story, and none of the fic is actually based on real events, but the former is HEAVILY based on real events between this guy and one of my good friends at school. lmao!

i’ve been wishing i could breathe underwater is based on my experience scuba diving, which is to say, pure unmitigated terror, 1/10, do not recommend except to say that you did it. tequila shots from the dark scene of the crime is chock-full of baseball talk, specifically about Worst Team In Baseball the Washington Nationals (affectionate), so those feelings are straight from my heart. the concept of tell me what to see has not happened to me but it was very much inspired by my experience of getting in the habit of working out and realizing your muscles are literally increasing in size. the christmas fic has all my jewish disdain for christmas. that’s the shortlist, i think!

16. any new wisdom you can share with other writers? honestly, nope! i think other writers are thriving on their own fic journeys, as i am on mine. you guys seem to have a handle on things. i can reiterate my vehement loathing of comma splices or otherwise incorrectly-placed commas, but other than that i don’t have much to offer in the way of wisdom.

17. any projects you’re looking forward to starting (or finishing) in the new year? yes!! i am really excited to (hopefully) finish this fic ive been intermittently writing that is based on back together by tss. well, actually it’s based on the specific energy that was created in the world when back together and 2011 were released on the same night. it’s a tss!5sos au. it’s going to be really good okay. it’s tasty. and as always i hope to finish summer camp au i am dead fucking set on finishing that fic there is no question in my mind that it will be completed someday sooner rather than later i hope but definitely eventually. aside from those, i can’t think of any other fic plans i have! just gonna see where the winds of fic fate take me.

Gasp! i was tagged by @perverse-idyll (<<< check out their works !), one of those "i wish i could write like that" writers in the Snarry fandom!

RULES: post the names of all the files in your WIP folder regardless of how non-descriptive or ridiculous. Let people send you an ask with the title that most intrigues them, and then post a little snippet of it or tell them something about it.

So, full disclosure, most of my WIPs have titles like fratt 4 maybe or Brodinsons caploki or the name of the event it's for, like, DDE, etc. Another caveat: some of these are pretty old, and while i'd like to finish them one day, there is an above zero number of works that i reread one day with the intention of working on them, and went "OMG it SUX." Sometimes, the mood / ideas etc were actually used in another fic. Final note: i'm not going to list or mention those that are going to be first published anonymously for events, or those that are just a few sentences jotted down. Several in both cases!

i don't think anyone who knows me or my fics will be surprised with 1's title ;-)

Matt jingled the cuff attached to his ankle, the other side of which was attached to his office’s radiator.

“Is it?” Foggy said, mildly, standing in the doorway with a cup of coffee, “I think locking you in place is a pretty good idea. Now, I’ll know where you are. At all times. And don’t get any ideas about picking the lock or breaking the cuff, I’m borrowing them from Pym and they’re some kind of nanomachine self-repairing super lock.”

“This is…”

“Matthew. If you say I’m overreacting, I’m going to cuff your arms down too. I guess that’ll teach you for falling asleep at the office.”

“Switching my coffee out for decaf is dirty pool.”

“You’re the one who didn’t notice, Mr. Super-Taster.”

“You said it was a new brand. And you drowned it in that horrific hazelnut syrup you like. I may never taste anything but that syrup again.”

“It is a new brand. Of decaf. And you can smell that syrup a mile away, so why’d you drink it?”

“I was trying to not upset you further.”

“But you agree that I have a right to be upset?”

Matt’s mouth snapped shut. And then opened again.

“Okay. I’m sorry I stood you up for our… date.”

Foggy crossed his arms, “Standing up implies you never showed. What you did, Matt, was come to the restaurant, hand me flowers and then run like your ass was on fire.”

“Okay, I’m sorry I – did that.”

“And then didn’t answer my calls for the entire weekend.”

“That too.”

Foggy sat down in the chair in front of Matt’s desk and put his feet up on the desktop.

Matt scowled.

Foggy ignored it, “You know, it wasn’t even humiliating. The waitress even saw you come in, give me the flowers, and flee. I didn’t even have to give her some story about how you would be here any minute - she was witness to you being an idiot.”

Matt sighed, ”Foggy…”

“She actually gave me a free glass of wine as a “sorry your boyfriend is insane” gift.”

“You’re… welcome?”

Foggy crossed his arms over his chest.

“Do you have an explanation for this extremely stupid chain of events, Matthew?”

“Something came up, suddenly.”

“If that was the case, you probably would have told me later, instead of radio silence,” said Foggy.

“Well…”

“What I think happened is that you got in your own head about fucking everything up. And ruining our friendship. And that Man Without Fear label only applies to hurtling into gunfire and not anything remotely to do with intimacy and you worry because of what happened to anyone you’re close to. But… you also really, really want to suck my dick.”

Matt choked. Foggy continued like he hadn't noticed.

“Hence the flowers and then the running for the hills like my dad is gonna come after you with a shotgun to force you to make an honest woman out of me. That sound about right?”

Matt frowned, “… Maybe.”

Foggy sighed, “Being your friend is about as dangerous as dating you, for one, so nothing new there. As for the rest… I don’t know. Get therapy about it.”

Matt stayed quiet.

“So, cards on the table, Matt. You are obviously interested in me.”

“I – not that obviously.”

“No, the dropping-off flowers and then running makes you pretty obvious. You’re not a subtle man,” said Foggy.

“Fine. Yes, okay, I am, uh… interested,” said Matt, spreading his hands on his desk, “And if you still are, after … uh, everything…”

Foggy hummed, noncommittally. Matt swallowed.

“Let me make it up to you,” Matt said, “Lunch. Dinner. Community theater musical.”

“Boy, you must really want my dick.”

“Fog, come on…”

“Okay, okay,” Foggy said, relenting, “Dinner, tonight. Here. Greek, so I’ll be nice and garlicky for you.”

Matt suppressed a wince.

“Sure, okay.”

“And you’ll order me some more flowers. Big bouquet. Obnoxiously big.”

“Absolutely.”

Foggy stood, “Great. So, it’s a date.”

And with that, Foggy leaned over the desk and kissed Matt on the cheek.

“See you at 7,” he said as he headed for the door to the office.

“Wait — Foggy, I’m still — what about the cuff?” Matt said, jangling the metal chain around his ankle.

Foggy paused, “Oh, right. Don’t let any of our clients see it. And let me know if you have to use the toilet.”

Matt gaped, “Wh — Foggy! Come on!”

Foggy just hummed as he walked into the hall, closing Matt’s office door behind him.

For the 007 Fest Anon prompt: Tailor!Q (2 of 2)

Notes: Unbetaed as always.

“You’re not doing splits in those pants again, are you?” Q queries in genuine horror as the bell over the front door tinkles.

It’s Bond’s third visit in as many weeks though the total count is nearing the double digits. Q’s fast becoming alarmed at the frequency- most folks don’t even make it through the doors once.

Bond thrusts the black garment bag in his direction with a grimace.

In this at least, Q can count on the familiarity. He takes the garment bag gingerly and unzips it, wary of the carnage he may find on the inside.

“Need it tonight,” the git grunts, utterly unaware and uncaring of the considerable backlog Q is still attempting to make headway on.

Q mentally reshuffles the work queue.

“Harrods is on the other side of the Thames,” Q quips, “you should have gone there instead if you needed a suit that urgently.”

Bond snorts, peering at the print on Q’s shirt. “And be spared from your exceptional fashion sense? I think not.”

“You should put us on retainer if you’re going to come rushing in last minute all the time,” Q says once over the thrum of the sewing machine going 5000 stitches a minute, “You can’t imagine how cross Mr Tottenham is going to be when his hemline alterations take two more days.”

“What an absolute sham,” Bond drawls from where he’s idly poking through rolls of bias tape, “the outstanding reviews are clearly overstated.”

Q has his suspicions; he’s no fool. Scuff and dirt marks, oddly placed rips in otherwise mint condition fabric, the little spot of rust on a suit jacket’s inner lining, the way Bond goes through multiple suits faster than a car requires a tyre change.

Bond isn’t doing splits in his pants- the bloody daredevil’s clearly parkouring his way across London and quite possibly the globe if the 2am flight is anything to go by.

At five to one in the morning, Bond dashes out the door with hardly a goodbye and renewed jacket in tow.

----

It’s a quiet two weeks- a long lull in which no errant daredevil comes bursting in with a rush job.

It’s the longest he’s gone without seeing Bond since their first meeting.

----

When Bond finally returns, it’s with a swagger and an arrogant smirk that screams “overcompensation”. There’s no garment bag, no feasible place in which Bond is possibly storing the Bond-made disaster of the day.

Q looks at Bond expectantly, fingers wriggling in a universal “give me” gesture.

Bond obeys.

The scrap of fabric that gets dropped off in his open palm is singed atop a familiar grey. It’s barely wider than the width of Q’s palm and just as long.

“Were you doing yoga in a wildfire?” Q exclaims in complete dismay.

“Of a sort,” Bond admits slyly, “It was a rather prickly matter. I dare say the suit wasn’t quite up to par unfortunately. I don’t suppose you could pencil me in for a fitting or two for a new one now?”

“I wish a fairy prince would come take me away,” he said, and got a smack on the arm for it.

“Don’t say things like that,” hissed Marci. “God knows who’s listening.”

All Foggy could do was snort.

My illustration for "Be Careful What You..." by the amazing @pomegranate-belle! It's a delightful story full of wishes an goblins and other wonderful things! I loved the dreamy quality of the opening and ending in particular and created this Amano inspired piece to match the tone.

Introducing the Harlequin Hoopla!

We here at Marvel HEA HQ believe in love - obviously - and we adore celebrating it. In order to help the Marvel fandoms (all of them) do just that, we’ve created a prompt fest for the month of February to celebrate that love is love is love.

Harlequin has been a brand synonymous with love stories for over 50 years, so we decided to take a little inspiration from them for this fest. For those who aren’t familiar, Harlequin publishes books in separate lines - and each line has specific things about it. They have a line of all suspenseful stories, one of all stories set in Amish country, one where all the books are over 300+ pages, etc.

So, we’re going to have 4 “Lines” - separate prompt categories - for you to choose from as you create. Each line has a daily prompt and you can mix/match cards as much as you’d like.

SuperRomance: Any rating, fics need to be longer than 3k, mood boards must have 8 images and original art must be complete.

Presents: Any length, size or completion status, but must be rated M or E

Romance: Any length, size or completion status, but MUST be fluff focused and be rated G or T

Suspense: Any length, size or completion status, any rating. These are all action or supernatural prompts.

Rules:

Basically, none. We ask that you post your prompt on or after the day it corresponds to (in your time zone is fine). The collection will open late on Jan 31 (EST) to start posting Feb 1 prompts. We ask a minimum fill of 500 words per prompt, with the exception of the SuperRomance prompts, which are to be a minimum of 3k or longer. You can start anytime.

Anyone who completes 5 or more prompts will get a participation badge and specific instructions on posting will be released closer to Jan 31. The event will run with 4 prompts for each day of February (and yes! that means that this is a Leap Year!)

Any Marvel ship is welcome - and poly ships are encouraged! - as well as any Marvel universe (MCU, 616, 3490, AoS, Daredevil, etc.) but remember that a Harlequin novel has to end with a Happily Ever After between the main protagonists! We also ask that the main rules from our Holiday Movie Challenge be respected: no underage sex, no romantic or sexual relationship of any kind between an underage person and an adult, and no glorification of N*zis if you write HTP or darker stories. Usual boundaries for age participation applies: 16+ for SFW content and 18+ for NSFW content - ages of consent and such vary so much from country to country, so we thank you for your understanding as we err on the sides of caution.
