Your First Fandom: Harry Potter, back in the day. I left after the publication of the Order of the Phoenix.

Your Current Fandom: The Rings of Power. Hands down the best fandom I have ever been in.

How did you first get into fandom?: I actually never knew there was anything like fandom in pre-internet days. And one day I was googling "Voldemort" and that was when I discovered fanfiction.net. :-)

How long have you been engaging in fandom spaces?: 21 years, with occasional breaks. Mostly lurking, I have only been active in HP, Shadow and Bone/Grishaverse and The Rings of Power.

How often do you read fanfic?: Now that I no longer write, almost daily. It has become a part of my "prior to going to sleep" routine.

Top three characters from your current fandom?: Eh... Halbrand, Mairon and Sauron? :-D If I had to name three different characters, it would be five. :-) Halbrand, obviously, and Galadriel, as well as Elrond, Durin and Disa.

Have you ever written a fic for a fandom and if so, shout it out!:

I have. 20 years ago it was just one one-shot and some poetry. My real fanfic Muse emerged in 2021 with Shadow and Bone, until she insisted I switch to The Rings of Power.

Fire: A RoP one-shot. Genre: redeeming Mairon. Characters: Halbrand and Galadriel.

Tale of a King: A RoP "redeeming Mairon" novella that started as a version of Fire with a different ending, and got out of hand. It's the one I am most proud about. It jumps between 2nd and 4th age and between prose and poetry (excerpts from a fictional theatre play). Characters: Halbrand, Galadriel, Bronwyn and several OCs. Despite having both Hal and Gal as characters, this is the one that is not Haladriel.

Three of Hearts: A Grishaverse one-shot. Just like Tale of a King, it has excerpts from a fictional theatre play. Characters: Alina, Aleksander, Mal and one OC.

Have you ever drawn fan art for a fandom?: If the logos for the Sauron Appreciation Society and Human Halbrand Defense Squad count as fan art, then yes.

Share a personal headcanon that you feel strongly about: Team Repentant Sauron. Even though I know I am deluded. :-)

You’re trying to convince a friend to get into your current fandom(s) with you. what episode, clip, or scene are you showing them?: I have already managed to talk two people into watching RoP. My enthusiastic blabbering and sharing my videos did the trick.

And finally, what does fandom mean to you?: A safe place where I can relax, with extremely nice, witty and creative people who share my hyperfixation and who are a joy to interact with. ♥

Your First Fandom: Tolkien! More specifically, I was obsessed with the movies starting with the release of the Fellowship of the Ring. My first fanfic was about a girl from Harad, no plot or anything, just looking at the life of someone in a culture dismissed as ‘the bad guys’ in the books and what happened to that culture in the aftermath of the ‘good guys’ winning at the end of the third age. I’m not sure I still have a copy of it, unfortunately.

Your Current Fandom: So many! Harry Potter, Tolkien (and everything related, including the new show), the Grisha trilogy, Jane Austen, the Locked Tomb, probably others I’m not thinking of at the moment.

How did you first get into fandom? I honestly don’t remember. Probably looking for information about the FotR movie and stumbled on a forum lol. Those were a huge thing back then.

How long have you been engaging in fandom spaces? I answered this above (since the FotR movie release date) but not continuously. I took a looong break to like. Do very intense real-life things.

How often do you read fanfic? It’s hard to balance reading and writing. If I’m not focused on a writing project I read fanfic all the time, constantly, even when I should be doing other things. If I’m busy writing that tends to sap my reading energy.

Top three characters from your current fandom? I am going to answer with Grishaverse since it’s my most recent new fandom obsession. The Darkling, Nikolai, and Tamar.

You’re trying to convince a friend to get into your current fandom(s) with you. what episode, clip, or scene are you showing them? I have no idea! I guess a really cool moment with the Darkling in Shadow & Bone? Like despite all my issues with the show... god, they had some good scenes with him. Such as emerging from the Fold like a vengeful wraith and freeing Grisha from cages and certain doom in season 2. SO GOOD.

hey, so people need to be aware that youtube is now (randomly) holding basic features for ransom (such as being able to pin comments under your own videos) in exchange for Your State ID/Drivers License, or a 30 Second Video Of Your Face.

not to pull a "think of the children," but No Actually. I've been making videos as a hobby since 2015 (and I've had my channel since middle school), I was a minor when I started and I'm not sure I would have understood the kind of damage something a seemingly simple as a video of your face can do.

this is a Massive breach of privacy and over-reach on google's part No Matter What, but if they're going to randomly demand a state ID or license then they absolutely should not allow minors to be creators.

google having a stockpile of identifying information on teenagers is bad enough, but the Alternative of recording your face and handing it over to be filed away is Alarming considering it opens the gates for minors who Aren't old enough to have a license.

and yes, there is a third option, but it's intentionally obtuse. a long wait period (2 months), with no guarantee of access (unlike, say, the convenience of using your phone's cameras for either of the other two), with absolutely No elaboration on what the criteria is or how it's being measured.

it's the same psychological effect that mobile games rely on. offer a slow, unreliable solution with no payment to make the Paid instant gratification look more appealing (the "payment" in this case being You. you are the product being offered).

and it's Particularly a system that (I think intentionally) disadvantages people who don't treat their channels like a job. hobbyists or niche creators who don't create regularly enough or aren't popular enough to meet whatever Vague criteria needs to be met to pass.

markiplier would have no problem passing, your little brother might not be able to. and while Mark's name is already out there there's no reason why your little brother's should be too.

something like pinned comments may seem simple, you don't technically Need it. but it's a feature that's been available for years. most people don't look at descriptions anymore. so when there's relevant information that needs to be delivered then the pinned comment is usually the go to.

for my little channel that information is about the niche series I create for. guides on how to get into the series, sources on where to find the content At All (and reliably so). for other creators it can be used for things Much More Important.

Moreover, if we let them get away with cutting away "small" features and selling it back to you for the price of your privacy, then they Will creep further. they Will take more.

See how in 2023 almost all of the reblogs come from the OP, from their few hours/days in the tag search. Meanwhile in 2014 the % of reblogs from OP is insignificant, because most of the reblogs come from the reblogs within the fandom, within the micro-communities formed there. You didn't need to rely on tags, or search, or being featured. Because the community took care of you, made sure to pass the work between themselves and onto their blog and exposed their followers to it. It kept works alive for years.

It's not JUST the reblog/like ratio that causing this issue, it's the type of interaction people have. They're content with scrolling and liking the search engine, instead of actually having a reblogging relationship with other blogs in their community.

Anyways, if you want to see more content you like, the only true way to make it happen is to reblog it. Likes do not forward content in no way but making OP feel nice. Reblogs on the other hand make content eternal. They make it relevant, they make it exist outside of a fickle tumblr search that hardly works on the best of days.

If you want more of something, reblog it.

EDIT: How do we show appreciation to the volunteers? For me reading these deep dives on OTW issues u guys apparently it's been said multiple times that one of their objective statements is to have paid staff for ao3 and there's a surplus of donations they haven't used up or the other community solutions that needs to address. For those more financially literate feel free to analyze, snipe me or add to the discussion etc. linked here by deepa. They’re cool and these yearly analysis they did aint no joke.
