PSA: the guardian is not working on a hit piece on diy hrt, and claims they are are misinformation

tl;dr: claims that the guardian's Susanna Rustin is writing a piece on diy hrt and contacting trans people for comment is false.

on the 18th, this post appeared on 4chan's /lgbt/ (slurs in thread: link). a screenshot was posted to reddit, then to tumblr. you've probably seen it:

today, the 23rd, another screenshot popped up on various discord servers, then was reposted variously to twitter. it shows a supposed email from guardian journalist and notorious TERF Susanna Rustin, claiming as the original 4chan post does.

it's now been shared around, and it's with good intentions. the message is useful: don't share your personal information or medical data with journalists, especially ones that happen to be TERFs.

but the post does this through misinformation and fearmongering. i'm still waiting on my response by email from Rustin, but she's reiterated twice (once, twice) that she did not write the email and is not working on such a story. on the 19th, i talked to other guardian newsroom journalists, who said they also did not know of a story's existence.

the moral of the story: this is misinformation, and it's dangerous. it spreads a fine message here, but it does it through spreading anxiety and terror.

he had become reliant upon the abilities of others. yes it was with regards to putting down a bet. he didn't feel guilty about it. it had developed this way because of having been denied his own ability in the arts. his creative processes of thought were today restricted and disallowed their natural path. it had been developed through a series of refusals via the education system, the employment system, then under the guard of an economy heavily reliant upon abusing the hostages it created. now the sporting achievements of others had relevance in his routine of life. his days were now filled with what the abilities of others in the sporting world could accomplish. he didn't mind. it was encouraging and he no longer minded winning or losing. if he won or lost today there was always tomorrow to win or lose in. tomorrow was always another day and his present moment was mindful of this one encouraging fact. he would be alive in tomorrow as he was in this present moment of living. whether he won or lost made no difference because he was never in debt. this was not debt. the achievements of fear mongers and torturers did not inspire him. they did not ever impress him. his positive nature amidst all their deathly economic pursuits was testament to this. it was easy to appreciate and appreciation was achievement enough.

I think it’s weird how hostile the art community, on Twitter especially, has become towards children as of late? Like artists that i follow one or two people in common with, I’ll go to their bio and there’ll be something saying “minors fuck off” (or something more violent like kys) and like… dude did the 🔞 emoji not suffice? I completely get not wanting to engage with children (I’m gradually reaching a point where someone follows me and I see they’re 15 or so and get Stressed™️), but that’s still a human person. Grown ass adults will have some weird hatred of kids online for the crime of being children. Something they can’t change.

Orgy night at the bathhouse. 18+ block party by the gay bar. Leather night at the lesbian bar. Pride specials at the other gay bar. Drag show at the regular bar. Memorial vigil outside city hall.

Some of these will be inherently not suitable for children or those adverse to kink/open sex. Others will be fine.

tbh i dont think talking about an outcome that currently seems inevitable is fear mongering

so. is tumblr going to go down, right now? no! right now, for us users, very little to nothing will change! however, from what we know, they are actively moving staff away from tumblr, with no plans to ever grow that staff back up. as people who know more about tech than me have already said, this means updates will trickle to a stop. bugs and glitches will pile up. without the number of staff to maintain tumblr properly, eventually it will be unable to keep running.

again, that's not right now. we're looking at the future here. so people looking to gather on other sites, to figure out where their communities are moving? they're looking towards that future. they, and i, want to be prepared, and can you blame us? while I was too young for it, I've heard about all the communities that were lost from livejournal. people are trying to prevent that from happening again.

it's not fear mongering to say "because of these actions, the site will eventually cease to run, so we should look to come together as community and have an idea of our next move when tumblr can no longer house us."

theres every chance we still have YEARS of functionality on this site left, even with the staff being cut. and, hey! maybe we'll get lucky. maybe they decide not to do this, or maybe tumblr gets bought out, and is actually able to make a profit without losing a significant portion of its user base. but a site can't run indefinitely without proper staffing.

addendum:

I did the check the blog of the original poster of the screenshot after writing this up. according to him, there seems to be no long term management plan, meaning we likely /would/ be in the holding pattern of "skeleton crew with very little to no additional support" that was already outlined in the screenshot and that people are assuming from it.

Yes, finally! I've been waiting!! Translation from the coalition agreement:

We will introduce the institution of "community of responsibility" and thus enable two or more adults to take legal responsibility for each other, outside of romantic relationships or marriage."

There are still things I'm angry about with this proposal, mainly in how they're constantly trying to appease people that it won't "encroach on the institute of marriage" (meaning no tax benefits or inheritance, that's a privilege only for married people for some reason). But I still think it's good, and I hope I will find people to do this with.

Hey, so in case y'all aren't aware, the governor of Texas is defying the Supreme Court's order to take out razor wire on the border that severely endangers the lives of people trying to cross, under the grounds that Texas is protecting itself from invasion. Abbott is threatening to pit the Texas national guard against Federal troops. It's probably a bluff, but praying for Republicans to be rational rarely works. Extremists are literally calling for succession from the United States.

I don't think it'll come to fighting, but the fact Abbott is so openly defying federal orders and blatantly threatening militant action is pretty terrifying. Especially if he's just allowed to do this, which would set a very dangerous precedent for what states can get away with.

saw a comment on a reel the other day that complained “why are people still reading russian literature”…not because they considered it pretentious, but because they believe it’s a product of a flawed society and the authors cannot help but reflect their nation’s biases. because the state of russia is currently an aggressor.

it’s laughable. there are so many things wrong with that sentiment, but most of all: no culture is perfect, no book is perfect, and no person is perfect. you can search all you want for the most ideologically pure authors and stories in the world, but you will never, ever find them. and if you do, you’re deluding yourself into believing they’re pure.

also, refusing to read certain things only increases your misunderstanding of the world and your own internal biases. reading, watching, seeing something—debating something—talking to someone you wholeheartedly disagree with—these things won’t taint you. no matter what you believe about them, tolstoy and akhmatova and dostoevsky won’t taint you. there’s no scorecard keeping track of how ideologically pure you are, and no reward waiting for you based on your score. only ideas that are worth exploring; only cultures that are worth finding value in. because cultures are made of people, and people are diverse and wild and flawed and strange and beautiful. and people are worth finding value in. but they are never, ever perfect.
