Welcome to Mangrove Island Pokemon Sanctuary!

A poke-ask blog set on the beautiful Mangrove Island! This island is home to a plethora of endemic life, this island is mostly untouched by humans. There is one building on the island, a old research station.

The sanctuary was established by Professor Mangrove, a specialist in rare and mythical Pokémon, when he bought the island sixty years ago. He believed the tropical island was prime habitat for the Pokémon Mew, despite no records of the rare Pokémon on the island. Despite his extensive records and notes of the flora and fauna on the island, there are no official records of Mew.

Currently, the island is owned and inhabited by Professor Mangrove’s great granddaughter, Top Ranger Alex and her partner, Gale.

This is based off a concept of mine that after the twins reunite they will have to face the conflict of what to do next: returning to modern Unova or staying in ancient Hisui?

Emmet wants to return home to their family and friends and Pokémon, and their job as Subway Bosses,

While Ingo might wanna join his brother but is not willing to abandon his duty as a warden and his new friends that easily, also because the life he used to live as Subway Boss Ingo is done, if he returned he would have to fill shoes that are no longer his, living a life he doesn’t really remember anymore.

Emmet will insist on a fight to determine what to do.

And he is pretty desperate about it too.. he finally found his missing twin brother after years of uncertainty, only to have the guy in an amnesia state that barely remembers who he is and is not willing to leave since the type of role he fulfills at Hisui.

Also there is the whole implication that if the twins leave Hisui they also have to leave their new teams behind, Emmet would have to say goodbye to the shiny Flygon he developed a strong bond with, and he definitely wouldn’t be too keen on that.. so even he is unsure on what he really wants at this point

(In the meantime leaving a sketch of him and shiny Trapinch (now a Vibrava) after the two got caught up in a gang fight between wild Zangooses and Sevipers, where Emmet kinda risked his life protecting his Trapinch but the lil guy will evolve and save him just in time)

Ahhh so many good questions!

I really don't know which one I'm proudest of! I can probably walk you through every piece I made with great enthusiasm, but picking just one is impossible! I'm first and foremost proud that they exist, that I dared to release them into the wild despite the many problems I have with them. Making that decision was not easy, but I'm so glad that I did.

But let's keep it in theme, so I'll talk about the largest pokemon drawing I made:

The sketch was what took me the longest, trying to figure out how to organise the composition to fit all the characters in an organic way that would feel right was very challenging. The focus was of course Lena and Kara at the front, but I tried to lead your eye through a spiral starting from Flygon and using the arc of its tail to lead you to the other running pokemons and slowly helping you explore the image and its many details. But I also didn't want to let any of them take centre stage, cause I thought it was fun to discover many of the details by yourself. But one way to organise it beside the composition is, of course, the shading.

Lighting and shading really help to create depth and help lead the eye, also make it pretty:)

The most fun I had with a fic was probably Twilight au. It was light, and ridiculous, and I could put in so many references and jokes, yet somehow it was still very wholesome and sweet. Also, I somehow wrote it all in about a month, so the flow of it all was pretty easy (having a script to base it off of helped😂)

That's another tough one, but I'd say I really like Noivern design. It's think it looks pretty cool, I really like the colour schematic and I also think I'd does a really good job explaining the creature though its design; like how the dark colours can tell you it lives in a cave, the large ears with the circles tells you this creature relays on sonic waves and probably inspired by a bat, which can also tell you the kind of attacks it might have, so I think it does just a really good job overall. Also I like it.

I’m finally working on making designs for some of my old PMD ocs! Meridian is partnered with a swampert named Marlow, who I’ve sketched but haven’t finished. I used them in a playthrough of Explorers of Sky awhile back, but I haven’t decided if I’m going to set them in PMD1, PMD2, or an original story if I decide to write about them.

She can take off her goggles, but she usually doesn’t. They give her an accuracy boost during bad weather.

Her wings and tail are translucent like an insect’s membranous wings

She normally lays her wings flat against her back while on the ground, but she can flare them out to make herself seem larger and more threatening.

She prefers to fly, but when she needs to move only a short distance, she walks on all four feet.

The greens and blues are slightly darker and more saturated than canon shiny flygon.

Her blue tail stripes form a gradient between the light and dark colors of her horns.

The inner wing and tail areas are the same light green as her belly, set at ~70% opacity.

The goggles are the same orange of the outer wing areas, set at ~85% opacity.

Her eyes are dark blue underneath the goggles.

Okay anyways hi I’m back after like, months lol, sorry about that (but I’m not actually back because I’m busy trying not to die because of school-work and trying to work on some MAP parts. I literally said five days ago on my yt channel “Hi I’m back now!! :-D” and school just said “no <3″ which, um, rude. So yeah I might come on and occasionally come post something but I’m really not gonna be coming on here to be active

OKAY OKAY but I need to explain these sketches because they will be suuuper confusing without context, I am very aware, yes, so there’s an explanation (+ some extra art and a non-shaded version of the stuff above) under the cut :-)

BASICALLY, @lulzyrobot​ made this AU of Pokémon Sword and Shield and now I have brain rot because of it. Also this AU will indeed be confusing to those who have no knowledge about sword and shield so here’s a skippable paragraph about the game:

(OBVIOUSLY SPOILERS BELOW)

Basically, SwSh is just a Pokémon game (no surprise there) and its gimmick or whatever is Dynamax, which turns Pokémon like. Really fucking large. (Some of them can also Gigantamax which changes their appearance as well as size, but we don’t care about that here bc it really isn’t relevant). In all gyms (except one, Spikemouth) there are power spots, which are needed for a Pokémon to Dynamax. If they’re not close to a power spot, they can’t do it. There are also power spots in the Wild Area (which is, you guessed it, an area in the game).��At one point in the game, the villain -- Chairman Rose -- starts up something called “the Darkest Day”, which happened before in the Galarian region (which is where everything takes place), in hopes of getting infinite energy for them or something like that (really makes no sense but like ok pop off ig). To do this, he basically uses these things called Wishing Stars -- which are what allows Pokémon to Dynamax -- to summon a Pokémon called Eternatus. In-game, you basically just summon two other legendaries (Zacian and Zamazenta -- they’re on the cover of the games) and fight Eternatus and then catch the fucker. That’s all context you need for this AU so let’s move on to that now:

The AU is basically that Eternatus sends out a powerful blast which fuses trainers with Pokémon, to varying degrees. The closer to a power spot you are, the more likely you are to get it bad. If you’re far enough from one you won’t be affected at all. A person can merge with multiple Pokémon, but the more of them, the harder it is to not go wild. If you merge with a wild Pokémon, you’ll become a Wild Trainer (and those basically act like, well, wild Pokémon).

OKAY ANYWAY, back onto this specific sketch (wow I really went on a rampage there lol)

I decided to Dynamorph my trainersona(??????) (btw, both the Dynamorph version AND the “human” version are WIPs, I’m not completely happy with either of them) and this was the resuulltttt

- Their name is Robin (because I’m a bastard that does self-insert ships with no shame)

- They merged with their Arcanine (and I’m considering also adding a wild Lycanroc, both so I can give them Epic Claws™ and so that their whole extremely volatile nature makes any sense)

- They have some REAL trouble keeping themself in check. Like. They’re constantly on the edge between becoming a Wild Trainer and being “normal”

- Because I am, like I said, a bastard who does self-ships without any shame they are together with Piers. yes I am a simp for him. 

- Robin has their select group of friends (made up of all gym leaders minus Opal because they have no idea what the fuck is up with her, as well as Marnie, Hop and Leon. No they don’t give a shit about Bede) which they are super protective of. They have to be reminded that they can all handle themselves, because they might otherwise become a bit possessive.

- While they are a raging storm you do NOT want to get involved with in any way to anybody outside their friend group, they are really nice to be around when they really care about you. They may be pretty stubborn, but they always do what they think is best for their loved ones. On multiple occasions, they’ve gone out to collect any sorts of gifts they can find that they think their friends will enjoy. They are super gentle and kind with Hop and Marnie (which, by the way, they’d literally die for either of them) and they’re overall a good friend/partner. Their main flaw here is their temperament and somewhat possessive nature.

- If anybody did something to even moderately hurt any of their friends... hoo boy, you do NOT want to do that. They’ve nearly killed people for leaving so much as a scratch on their loved ones, and have to be physically dragged away so they won’t really kill somebody. 

- However. Despite really, truly believing they'd never, under ANY circumstances, hurt ANY of their friends... they’re wrong about that. The only ones they could truly never purposely cause harm to would be Piers, Marnie and Hop. Yes, it would take A LOT for them to hurt any of the others (like, they’d only hurt the others if they tried to, idk, kill them or something. Or if they tried or actually did kill somebody else in their close circle) but it could hypothetically happen.

- If they ever were to see Rose, he’d probably be torn to shreds on sight. Literally nothing would be able to stop them. 

- While it’s near impossible for anybody they don’t care about to calm them down, it’s pretty easy for especially Hop, Marnie, Piers, Raihan, Leon and Milo (and the others, but less so for them lol). 

- They were right by a power spot, like they were about to step into a den, when the blast happened so they were. Really fucking affected by it. They stayed in the Wild Area for a while after that, searching for their Arcanine who had “mysteriously vanished”, before they transformed. They were basically a Wild Trainer for at least a month before Piers found them and managed to get them to remember who they actually were over the course of two days. It was,, really concerning when they’d at first been texting him pretty much non-stop to update him on what was going on with them just to then go radio silent for a few days, especially since people had begun transforming at that point. Haha angst go brrr

- You must ignore how their clothes still kind of fit despite them growing to be both more ~muscular~ and tall and how it’s not dirty for the sake of my convenience ok

Anyways, here’s the promised extra art (first one is the same sketch without any shading and that stuff (buT I MISSED ONE, I DIDN’T REMOVE THE SHADING FROM ONE I AM SORRY LOL), second is Robin as just a regular trainer)

Oh also some context for some of the sketches:

Bottom one where they’re screaming “yOU mOthErFuCKeR” is what their reaction would be to one of their loved ones being killed

The one with Milo is Robin just. Being near him. After probably having some sort of panic or anxiety attack because they’re worried about everyone. Because Milo is a really calming person to be around.

Top one in the middle is Robin just patting the red eye-lens-things Raihan got from his Flygon because they find it to be Very Entertaining to just pat them for no reason at all.

The ones where they’re hugging Marnie would take place right after they come back to Spikemouth after their month(s) as a Wild Trainer. They still weren’t used to being around people (and much less BEHAVING like a PERSON) so they were pretty awkward about Marnie hugging them.

The one where they’re surrounded by darkness to the right and kneeling forward is them in the middle of their “transformation” after the blast happened.

Fiery ones at the top right are just Robin being pissed as fuck lol

(Still haven’t decided if this will be the “official” team of Pokemon I have, but it’s cool for now. Also yes, I added an extra Pokemon to my “team” who isn't actually a battle-Pokémon or whatever. I NEED APPLETUNS EMOTIONAL SUPPORT OKAY)

📏 What’s your go-to canvas size?

Usually no more than a couple thousand pixels in either direction. My laptop is old and struggles with big stuff.

For my monthly doodle/sketch file, I use 2400 x 2100

For non-commissioned art, I use similar dimensions to those above

For commissioned art, I try to work on larger canvases. Actual dimensions vary greatly on what the subject is, as I crop/reshape canvases to fit my needs.

For traditional art, uhhh. I usually just work with whatever paper is nearest, and that ranges from a couple inches to 20" x 24". Usually, though, it's more in the 5"x7" to 9"x11" range, although, again, I crop liberally.

Ridley...but I fused him with a certain Pidgeot.

This fusion is based on an old teenage imagination years ago. During the era where Twitch Plays Pokemon was taking over the internet and being me, I really not fond of that memes spawning from them.

Back then, I imagine that Pidgeot being the cunning god of death, Jird Bigley and the rival with a Flygon (becuz people also joke that Flygon never got a mega) in a story called Captain Flygon which is like a Metroid-like adventure. But that idea has been abandoned to death. I did plan on creating a Fraymakers/Indie Pogo/Indie game Lab Alternate Universe and maybe I'll include him for the extra assistant to the mad scientist.

To clarify, this used to be that Pidgeot mentioned until the scientist injected him with many chemicals and fed him radioactive seeds and it devoured its former trainer along with the rest of his Pokemon.

Also, sorry for the rough paper again, becuz I drew this in the non-sturdy sketchbook again becuz I intended it to be a sketch along with future Indie Game Lab AU Experiments.

**note, he never uses pokeballs to catch them, especially since he works as a ranger; if anything, these pokemon willingly accompany him. And no, he doesn’t have a full team because that isn’t priority. 

Honestly, the fact he even has four pokemon is kind of against ranger code, unless we go based on the Almia method and have him only use one of these guys as a partner pokemon at a time while the rest stay and live somewhere else while on standby.

pokémon 1: Flygon ♂ / lvl. 65 / impish / levitate [move set: dragon breath / earth power / dragon tail / hyper beam] 

He first met his Flygon back when he was younger at the exterior portion of Reversal Mountain. It was a daily thing to walk on over there and then head back since being in the small town that is Lentimas Town can get boring sometimes.

As he continued to go there for some different scenery or to cool his head after arguments, he ended up finding a Trapinch. This began a long trend of awkward staring contests whenever they unintentionally ran into each other. He wouldn’t move and neither would that pokemon. 

After encountering it a good number of times, he had reported to his sister that he kept seeing it every time he took a walk over there. Considering how unlikely it was for him to encounter it that often, she didn’t believe him. Ending up as an argument, Keith decided to sketch out the pokemon each day he saw it there.

So, that led to him taking his sketchpad and drawing the trapinch every time. He’d take a seat a bit away from the creature and draw it the best he could, along with a date and time. Over time the little guy got curious and began closing the distance as Keith would continue drawing.

As the drawing sessions continued, it seemed the Trapinch had begun to warm up to him, taking a seat on his lap sometimes or being right at his feet while he continued to draw these sketches that were increasingly getting more detailed the more he did them.

A few times he’d spend until dark to deal with said Trapinch because it’d like to steal his sketch pad in the moments he was taking a break from the drawings. 

This meant Keith had to buy more sketch pads to replace the ones he couldn’t get back.

But, after coming to the usual spot earlier than usual one day, he noticed how the Trapinch had torn out the pages it had liked the best and had tossed the rest of the books aside. Upon waking up from its nap and noticing him, the pokemon grabbed the sketchpads in its mouth (carefully mind you) and returned them to him while glancing back to make sure the pages it wanted didn’t blow away in the wind.

After that incident, Keith made sure to ask if his new companion wanted the sketch he had just drawn or not--so he wouldn’t have to deal with stolen, precious materials.

Eventually, the Trapinch ends up following him back home and decides to invade his personal life because simply meeting outside the cave isn’t enough quality time.

There was a lot of troublesome things to deal with in the beginning too. Like Trapinch destroying the pottery he worked on because it wasn’t Trapinch shaped. This behavior still continues to this day, but at least now it’s more mature and let’s Keith get his needed work done before demanding special creations.

It’s quite obvious this Flygon likes to bully and mess around with him. But in the end, it does greatly care for him and will destroy anyone who tries to hurt him, hence that offensive moveset because only it can bother Keith like that.

Despite all that, they do end up getting along quite well, as shown during evening hours when everyone gets settled down for sleep with Flygon allowing everyone to use it as a pillow of sorts and using a wing to keep Keith warm and cozy.

pokémon 2: Lampent ♀ / lvl. 55 / mild / flash fire [move set: shadow ball / inferno / flame burst / hex] 

He met his Lampent back when it was a Litwick during his visit to Celestial Tower. He had gone there originally to investigate some concerns of the nearby populace. When investigating, he had noticed a small flame in the corner of one of the floors, so small that he worried for the whatever Pokemon was sitting over there. From whatever he had heard about the small candle pokemon that resided here, the flames should not be that faint or small; it was small enough to be barely visible against the other larger flames around it. Yeah, that didn’t look right.

Approaching the small Litwick in the corner, Keith noticed a bunch of other Litwick gathered around it almost a circle. Was this Litwick being bullied or worried over? A second glance would make it obvious this Litwick was being singled out and tormented.

Using harmless methods to drive away the other Litwick with purple flames, he slowly approached the Litwick that was cowering in the furthest depth of the corner it could.

Despite being innately afraid of the rumors surrounding Litwick’s ability being able to drain a person’s soul, he couldn’t leave it be. So, to protect the small flame this Litwick possessed, he carefully held his hands around it so it wouldn’t go out from the breeze coming in from a draft.

Touched by the display of kindness despite the evident fear of the outcome of interacting at all, the Litwick quickly decided to tag alongside him, especially since he didn’t seem to be bothered or notice the fact it’s flame was a different color than the others.

Eager to be a pokemon he could be proud of, it has been super happy to light the way for him or help him with cooking and what not, whatever it flame is capable of helping out with.

Over time and even after evolving, it has grown to be proud of its odd coloring of fire simply because Keith keeps mentioning how pretty the light that emanates from it is. Expect his Lampent to warm everyone up at night, except maybe Flygon when it has been too rude to Keith throughout the day.

Also really wants to evolve into a Chandelure--but obviously, Keith doesn’t have a dusk stone to do that with.

Only takes life energy from elder persons per personal policy and morals.

pokémon 3: Galvantula ♂ / lvl. 60 / quiet / compound eyes [move set: string shot / bug buzz / electro ball / slash]

On the way to Chargestone Cave, the duo end up walking through tall, high grasses that cause their clothing to get covered with a bunch of grasses and seed pods. Upon making their way into the cave where they’re certainly not going to pick up more grass strands and seed pods, they begin plucking off them off.

When noticing something stuck on Keith’s back, Hugh reaches out and grabs the supposed seed pod, only for it to end up being a Joltik that shocks them both with electricity.

By the time they did leave the cave, the Joltik had completely refused to detach itself from Keith at all, now happily eating a seed that had been plucked off earlier given by Keith himself. What could he say when he finds the little guy to be way too cute?

During travels, it helps by picking up edible berries and working with its string to help tie things together and whatnot.

After evolving, it aids Flygon during evening and nighttime procedures, helping to secure and protect the small little team while everyone rests.

pokémon 4: Audino ♀ / lvl. 53 / gentle / healer [move set: helping hand / heal pulse / refresh / double edge] 

met while traveling though Unova after returning from his time in Almia.

It was encountered randomly, but because Audino sensed his troubles and his permanent injuries, it began to follow him around for awhile.

After being persistent enough, Keith allowed the Audino to officially help out, though every time it does brings up memories tied to his heavy insecurities related to his dependent status. It also brings up memories of Rachael’s Audino and how hers was so attuned to him personally that it brings a lot of icky feelings inside. AKA being taken care of is not a fun thing for his mind.

Audino helps him out the most having the ability to handle things most similarly to humans. It helps with cooking prep for everyone and medical needs for the pokemon companions amongst other things.
