BOOK REVIEW: A.V. Wilkes’s Jamie Hallow and the End of the World
Tumblr media
by Elizabeth Broadbent, Staff Writer.
I was skeptical of this one from Cemetery Gates Media; after a steady diet of adult literary horror, did I really want to return? But the blurb pulled me in; Jamie Hallow owes more than a little bit to the Silo trilogy, one of my favorite dystopian futures (common sense: wait out the Four Horsemen in a missile silo). I couldn’t resist.
I’m glad I gave in to temptation. While Jamie Hallow’s comparison to Wool is inevitable—there’s a crumbling silo full of humanity’s last stand; they’ve lost touch with other silos; their group’s been wracked with civil wars—similarities end there. Rather than a hardboiled “We can’t go out and we’re miserable,” Jamie has other problems. His group, the “Legion,” are religious fanatics who worship the Old Gods with blood-sacrifice, and they’re counting on their magic to save them. While the Legion can go outside, the world’s wrapped in nuclear winter, and the only survivors are ragged, desperate people—except the Shoggoths, massive, uncaring monsters who destroy everything in their path. Raised in Legion orphanages, Jamie’s an unbeliever in the group’s mission, but he joins their adolescent task force after merciless bullying. During his first venture outside with them, he finds they’re raiding the dregs of society to steal a child. Worse, they won’t tell him why.
Wilkes knocks it out of the park with Jamie Hallow’s queer representation. As the mama to three boys, I’m always trying to find queer books that don’t center the character’s sexuality. I want my kids to see queerness as another part of life’s landscape, not a never-ending source of romance. While there’s some romance here, it’s not the book’s point—Jamie’s far more than a swooning ex-boyfriend. It’s important to have books that center queerness, but it’s just as vital to have books like Jamie Hallow, which may do more to normalize the spectrum of human sexuality than the romances. Jamie’s gay. Big deal. Next, please. I’d hand this book to my sons for the characterization alone.
Jamie also has a compelling, fast-paced plot that sinks its teeth in and won’t let go. With a backdrop of fantastic world-building that never goes explain-y, this horror/fantasy mashup will send YA lovers into a tizzy, and its throat-punch of an ending seals the deal. Sequel, please?
I’m in love with Cemetery Gates’s recent releases. Their scope alone is fantastic, and they seem to have a knack for finding stellar world-building. Here’s to hoping I get my hands on more.

I built a Cyberpunk City out of GARBAGE
(AKA: What you do when you’re stuck at home and bored to tears)
Tumblr media
So, one of the wilder things I did during the pandemic was build my own cyberpunk city to use for a music video shoot.
The bones of the project just uses completely randomly pieces of cardboard and other crap from my garage, randomly glued together into shapes that looked vaguely building-like, and spray-painted gray and black to look somewhat on-purpose.
Tumblr media
(Party cups and left over toilet paper tubes just add to the aesthetic)
The next thing I did was add dramatic uplighting, because let’s face it... everything looks cooler and bigger and more intense if it’s uplit. Chunks of leftover LED strips work really well, and it’s really easy to isolate just the blue circuits. It creates the illusion of scale which is important for any model to look large.
Tumblr media
Of course, no city is complete without BLINKY LIGHTS (and I’m sure you noted already there’s some blinky action on top of the towers here) so I spent a bunch of time googling blinking light circuits and experimenting with them on a breadboard before ultimately extending the wires to glue them to the buildings themselves.
Tumblr media
(I  got a basic electronics kit on Amazon for most of the components)
Then, I put white LED strips inside of the bigger buildings (a little trickier to isolate the W circuits but not impossible!) and poked holes to simulate lit windows for ultimate sci-fi street cred.
At this stage, things were looking pretty legit.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The “final” touch was to create a virtual billboard to go in one of the sections. I had an old first gen ipod touch that I made a little slot for and cobbled together a video loop for. (Don’t worry it’s not permanently installed or anything -- it just slides in and out.)
Tumblr media
... and of course what dystopian future is complete without flying cars...?
A little platform for a hotwheels car to go on (after it’s all painted green of course for the greenscreen.)
Tumblr media
Insert some practical effects, some video-editing magic, and VOILA! ... it’s CYBERPUNK TIME BAYBEE.
Tumblr media
I was inspired by a post on here from literally years ago about making a city out of garbage and LED’s and decided to take it to the next level. I’m sure at some point I could save myself the trouble by learning how to 3D model but this was so much more fun.
I probably spent too much time on this but if you’re in any way curious about what the final result turned out to be, the video I built all of this for premieres on October 15th.

The epic sci-fi dystopian drama where Yuuji falls in love with a man who doesn't have his best interests in mind.
-------
The final chapter is here, folks. No Eviction Notice is finally complete. When I say epic sci-fi dystopia, I mean 89,000 words of a dying cyberpunk world, full of body-snatching villains that we love to hate. Did I mention it's a tragedy? 💀 at least the smut was lit, right? to make up for the tears?

Tumblr media
im mazzie ! 23 - she/they - queer - co. mst
i've been roleplaying for roughly 12 years. started on quizilla, then wattpad, then kik and amino, and i took a year or so break before i decided to try finding partners on tumblr too c:
— 🐚 i roleplay in 3rd person literate style. anywhere from one paragraph, semi lit, lit, to borderline novella style. i prefer somewhere in the middle, but will match your length/style ! (i will also type in lowercase like this ooc but i promise i have real grammatical skills lmao)
—🍙 i roleplay exclusively on discord. if you're interested please dm me @ darlingmazzie ! id like to eventually make us a private server so we can more easily organize everything, and its also easier to talk & be friends ooc that way c:
— 🎧 i exclusively roleplay ocs and prefer oc x oc pairings. i will roleplay within fandoms/canon universes, but only with original characters. the exception to this is dragon age (origins, two, or inquisition), in which case i will do either oc x oc or oc x cc pairings. the only chars i wont play in da are cullen and aveline </3 if you want to play canon characters in any of these, thats fine! i just wont do it myself, im not super comfortable with it/afraid of being super ooc
— 🧸 fandoms i am familiar with: dragon age, tes: oblivion, tes: skyrim, fallout (3, NV, 4), fable 2 and 3, game of thrones (not asoiaf), d&d settings, lord of the rings/the hobbit, altered carbon, stranger things,
— 💿 i will do any pairing, but prefer pairings with female characters because i just prefer playing women. most comfortable with m/f, followed by f/f (or gn/f), but i will do any other pairing, including poly pairings/relationships (i love them sm) !! i prefer to play more than one character per roleplay/doubling up anyway :) optional tho!!
— 🤍 i prefer to do roleplays with romance and much prefer to include smut. (can be occasionally or often, just lemme know how comfy you are with it!) because of this, i wont roleplay with anyone below 20. i'm almost 24 and rpimg smut with anyone younger makes me feel icky. if you never roleplay smut or do so extremely rarely, we probably wouldn't be a very good match :c
— 💭 favorite genres: apocalypse, dystopian, fantasy/occult/supernatural, sci fi, semi historical, historical fantasy, horror adjacent. will do more casual settings, slice of life, college settings, even more cutesie things (preg/family rps, etc).
— 🪩 i have very very few triggers and love exploring dark content and themes (stalking, slashers, blood magic, demons, mental illness, angst, death, etc) alongside everything else, especially in horror adjacent plots. the only thing i have a hard line on is oc/character death (unless we really really discuss it before hand!)
— ✉️ i would prefer to come up with a plot together or discuss things we both want (and possibly create ocs specifically for the roleplay), but i am working on getting some carrds for my currently 'pre-made' ocs and scenarios that i am more than okay with using !! links will be up soon <3

Nature and Young Adult Lit
This may be a strange slightly rambling post, but one thing led to another. As I bicycle to work each day, there are several oak trees to pass which means that lately there are many, many acorns to dodge. Recently on Threads, author Jen Ferguson [Those Pink Mountain Nights] mentioned having a load of acorns raining down on the roof. This got me thinking about the chapter in Braiding Sweetgrass when the author's grandfather gathers up pecans during a year with an extraordinarily large crop. That story is a good one and may be found here. From there I leapt to thinking about nature and young adult lit because that's what my brain does.
Obviously, Braiding Sweetgrass: Indigenous Wisdom, Scientific Knowledge, and the Teaching of Plants by Robin Wall Kimmerer and Monique Gray Smith was the first young adult book that came to mind. It's a beautiful memoir with a look at Indigenous science and the natural world. The illustrations by Nicole Neidhardt are fantastic and make it an excellent book to pour over. See our review here.
This led me to thinking about Firekeeper's Daughter by Angeline Boulley. In it, the main character has learned about nature through Indigenous teachings, but also through schooling and texts. There were parallels between Kimmerer's lived experience and the fictional account of Daunis. You can learn more about the book in our Group Discussion.
Highly Suspicious and Unfairly Cute by Talia Hibbert is a book that that involves the outdoors and romance. We had a Group Discussion for this one too. In that discussion, Jessica mentioned Alexis Nicole Nelson, also known as The Black Forager. Looking at the acorns around me I wondered if she had done a video about them and yup, that is a thing she's collected and talked about. I don't know if she will be writing a book for young adults anytime soon, but for now, there is an incredible amount of video content on Tiktok, Instagram, and YouTube including the relatively new Crash Course Botany class.
Reflecting on nature, there is an awful lot of things that can go wrong so there are also quite a few dystopian and sci-fi books that are concerned with the environment, disasters, and climate change.
The Parable of the Sower: A Graphic Novel Adaptation is based on Octavia E. Butler’s novel of the same name and is by Damian Duffy and John Jennings. The story follows a young girl as she navigates a world that is in severe distress. She is not only trying to survive, but she is contemplating faith and what it means to her and what it could look like for others.
The Ones We're Meant to Find by Joan He is another survival type of story in the midst of natural disasters due to climate change. The story revolves around two sisters.
Want by Cindy Pon really digs into the economic disparities in relation to climate change and environmental issues. It's set in Taipei not too far in the future. You can read more about this awesome book in our Group Discussion.
Orleans by Sherrie L. Smith is an older title, but also delves into some of these issues of the environment and economic disparities. Here is our review.
Are there other books about nature and the environment that you think we've missed or should watch for in the future?

Officially announcing my upcoming novel- SPLICERS: THE RISING GODS
Tumblr media
Chinese Mythology meets Cyberpunk 2077 in this sci-fi romance set in a dystopian, multi-tiered city state...
Chentang City is not a place of opportunity.
It's the kind of society where you are forever locked into whatever economic class you were born into; the majority of the population live in single room shacks with their entire families in the Outer Circle, those with something of a disposable income live in relative comfort in the Inter-Circle, and the richest of the rich live amongst the neon lit skyscrapers of Prime Island.
Nezha knew he was unlucky; being born in the Outer Circle was basically a sentence to an early death after a life spent toiling away in factories, manufacturing products he'd never be able to afford. However, his desire to climb the economic ladder was only outshined by his beauty, and that made him the perfect candidate to become a Rentboy. After finding some success at a brothel in the Inter-Circle, he's convinced he’s only one good night away from changing his family's lives forever.
However, everything goes to Hell when the brothel unexpectedly shuts down, and Nezha is forced to get in on heist to steal Xiandan; the hottest drug in the city that supplies both a euphoric high, and the potential to develop superhuman powers.
When things inevitably go wrong, Nezha finds himself gifted with more power than he could've ever imagined, and he comes to an intoxicating realization; the chance to change his life that he's always wanted? This is it, and he has no intention of wasting it. He’ll join forces with Yang Jian, the leader of a group of cyber-rebels called Ghostnet, and Ao Bing, the son of the CEO who practically owns the entire city. Together, they’ll fight to bring down Chentang City’s literal and metaphorical walls, while coming to realize that the connection they share might truly be the strongest force on the planet.
Tentatively Releasing 12/2/24!

i neeed to know ur favorite lesbian vampire novels. i need recs because there are few and like i need to expand my base from something other than carmilla and the confines of my imagination. i need lesbian romantic vampirism.
i am quite literally reaching through time and space to kiss your forehead for asking this question and allowing me to talk about my favorite things. prepare to get so much more than you asked for because i have no self control.
Lesbian Vampire Fiction
(other than Carmilla, which is so so dear to my heart and I return to it every single October)
A Long Time Dead by Samara Breger: Based in 19th century England; deliciously gothic, moody, and thrilling without being too highbrow or pretentious. The book also doesn’t waste much time on context, the book opens to our delightfully blunt and funny sunshine MC being cared for by a mysterious brooding vampire (also gets smutty by page 10 if you’re into that ✨) if you want entertainment without particularly demanding prose, found family, and the most entrancing sapphic love story i literally can’t recommend this enough.
La Petit Mort by Olivie Blake: Steeped in New Orleans romance and intrigue, MC is bequeathed a house that comes with bizarre terms and conditions attached. TECHNICALLY the MC is not a lesbian and there is a temporary male love interest, but the emotionally unavailable bloodthirsty vampire antagonist is so magnetic I barely even noticed him to be honest (for best experience, use any maladaptive daydreaming tendencies to make him into a butch as you read). I adore Olivie Blake’s writing style, very blunt and easy to put down in a single sitting. I inhaled this book
these are all the ones I have actually read and enjoyed, but my TBR is a mile long so if you’d like more please send me a message and i’m happy to send those over as well x
Honorable Mentions for other Vampire Lit
Woman, Eating by Claire Kohda: Young intersectional vampire trying to fit into society despite her bloodlust. heartwrenching depiction of the alienation and anxiety of being a girl in your twenties that is only magnified by the supernatural lens
The Vampyre by John Polidori / Dracula by Bram Stoker: cornerstones of the genre, required reading blah blah blah
Honorable Mentions for other Lesbian Lit
Our Wives Under the Sea by Julia Armfield: Just finished this and it absolutely destroyed me. Surreal body-horror about a woman’s wife going off on a research trip and coming back wrong. the portrayal of how love persists against all reason and logic was so devastating
This is How You Lose the Time War by Max Gladstone: dystopian time traveling sci-fi centering around two queer MCs on opposing sides of a war and also basic ideology. FASCINATING and short read that was made indescribable by the representation. i finished this book and then immediately started it again from the beginning.
Final Honorable Mention: A Certain Hunger by Chelsea Summers. not queer nor vampiric but romantic cannibalism done so well it had to be included. if you want “i support women’s wrongs” and to be inserted into the mind of a brilliant, vicious, sociopathic female misandrist you need to read this.
There’s a million others that fall into these categories but for the sake of keeping this -relatively- succinct i will stop there. thank you for such a lovely ask, this made my heart sing <3

What kind of books do you think Nanami owns/reads?
I LOVE THESE KINDS OF ASKS !!!! <3
this may be kind of silly, but personally, i have this little hc that nanami loves history. so i think he probably has a collection of history books/biographies of things and people that he finds interesting. in particular i feel like he would really enjoy the renaissance era, as well as all the revolutions of the 1600-1800s ! not just the wars, but like the scientific & industrial revolutions too, since you can trace how society got to the point its at today.
in the same vein, i think he would enjoy philosophy books a lot. he doesn't take them at face value, but he likes to read to gather specific ideas and curate his own thinking about the world (as is the point of philosophy books).
as for fiction, i think nanami mostly enjoys classics. obviously he owns the most of japanese lit, but i think he probably cultivates a little library of books from all over the world. also, i could see him reading some sci-fi and fantasy, but like... the older ones. like you can't tell me teenage kento wasn't a lord of the rings fan bc i know he was.
oh also i think nanami would also enjoy 1900s satire books & dystopians. like 1984, animal farm, fahrenheit 451, brave new world etc. i could see him thinking about those frequently.
those are probably what he reads the most, but really, i think he'd be open to reading almost anything, especially if its something his s/o really loves. like is kento going to pick up acotar of his own volition ?? absolutely not. will he read it if you talk about it nonstop and tell him how much you enjoy it??? OF COURSE! he loves being able to talk about books with you, and he hope you'll read the ones he recommends as well

Looking for an 18+ long term rp partner! I’m a sucker for all genres but i’ll be elaborating in a minute. I heavily prefer oc plots over fandom, but I’m willing to engage in fandom rp if I’m interested. Mainly looking to do some fun OC stuff. I enjoy fantasy, angeology , mystery, apocalypse, crime, royalty, dystopian, futuristic, romance, slice of life, slow burn, enemies to lovers, espionage, etc. I am open to practically anything as long as we’re both engaged with our characters and build the story together. Im very open with boundaries, it will be the first topic discussed once you reach out to assess what we’re comfortable with. As for gender, I write any and I prefer a writing partner that is also flexible with that, though it is not a requirement. I am also ok with most ship dynamics and poly relationships. Not exclusively looking for romance, fun platonic or familial dynamics are totally fine by me! I like to draw so i’ll most likely shitpost a lot and make doodles of our ocs as well as mood boards, playlists and such.

i was sorting through my wips and i know some of them are going to be permanently abandoned, but i still want to share them. so, im starting with this one. its just under 2k words, is sci-fi-y, and was suppose to be dystopian future-esque and surrounds the ghost in the machine theory/mind body dualism theory (ew gross philosophy gross ew) the only content warning is that it will never be finished lol if you want to adopt it feel free
Zeros and ones— binary code. A thing of the past. Ancient relic if you will.
Whoever built this system believed in the past, evidently. The whole premise is bringing no-names back to life. Taking their consciousness and loading it into a new body. The Ghost in the Machine.
Obviously, you understand that’s not the expanse of the project. This is just the story they feed to you. You have no doubt that if this project was ever completed it would have been used for the worse. It’s essentially making zombies, bringing people back from the dead, but instead of flesh and blood, it’s technology and artificial intelligence.
Every line of zeros and ones that you read effectively decimates your ability to care though. This project’s not going to work, and your brain is quickly deteriorating— alongside your will to exist.
Years dedicated to science, years invested into the brain, technology, and studying artificial intelligence. Nearly half your life, and this is what you have to show for it, a low tier secret sector government job. Typing in hopeless code that, even if it did work, all the credit would go to your team lead, Dr. Miller— who, for the record, has not been in office for the last two weeks. Sure, your sector is highly ignored and on its way to extinction, but you’d think he’d at least have some integrity in his job.
Using your hands to push yourself back from the desk, your chair scratches loudly against the floor. Your morning’s abandoned cup of coffee, cold and bitter, threatens to breach the rim of the cup. The mood you’re in, you almost dare it to. In fact, you go far enough to look up at the ‘No Food or Beverages' sign pasted above the monitor and send it a challenging look— one you’re sure would convince any watching eyes that you have indeed lost all sense of sanity.
The room settles, all coffee contained into your mug, and you turn, heading straight for the break room.
“Shit,” you curse. Nearly a year in this building and you still forget the fact that you need your keycard to do anything, even to just get out of a room.
You walk back over to your desk, catching a glimpse of the very impressive storm going on outside your small window.
Bending down under your desk, you debate if asking the technician if it would be possible to essentially move the whole room 4 feet to the right so that you could look out the window while you code. Shuffling through your bag, you decide that it’s a stupid idea, the project is sure to be scrapped in the next few months, so that’s just extra work on his plate for no reason. As soon as you grip the electronic card in your hand, the room illuminates in bright white light coming from the window.
Lightening.
You go to stand, but as soon as you do, the crack of thunder vibrates through the room, making you jolt in surprise. You hit your head, and to make matters worse the sound of a splat of liquid above you is then followed by slow trickling.
“No,” you gasp. “No, no, no,” you chorus, standing from your crouch.
Milky coffee is spread from letter to letter, all across the keyboard and spills backwards into the computer. The monitor vibrates and buzzes, pixelated zeros and ones all melding together.
“Fuck,” you curse. “Shit, no.” Grabbing your sweater from your seat, you try dabbing the spilt coffee of the hardware.
In your debacle, you hadn’t noticed the way the room lit up in flashing hues of fluorescent green. The source of light is at the back of the room. The Blanks Machine— an asset to your project that resembles a large steel vault.
The Blanks Machine is much like a printer, but regards a photocopier with beaming lights that pass over and over the human-like bodies of the Blanks. It operates quickly— theoretically of course, it’s never been successful. If it were to be successful, the process would be done in mere seconds. It would be truly remarkable— to send a lifetime of thoughts, experiences, memories, as well as replicate neuron per neuron data into the brain of the Blank. Remarkable, and that’s why it has never been done. That’s why the coding has never worked, it’s a near impossible thing. For everything to click together perfectly and then be translated into a Blank… impossible— until now.
You dab the coffee a final time before decidedly picking up the whole keyboard and tipping it upside down, coffee spilling all over your desk dripping out from under the keys. You try to do the same with the rest of the parts but it’s hopeless.
“Fuck,” you nearly whimper. You’re fucked. Your job is done for.
The computer screen blinks bright red, something you’ve never seen it do before and it makes your eyes start to water. A chime comes from the back speaker, reminiscent of an old school typewriter. Then everything goes black and the static of electricity dies completely, leaving you in total silence.
“Fuck,” you say a final time in defeat. You sit back on the floor, bringing your knees upwards and resting your hands on your ankles. Your eyes go unfocused in the dark of the room.
You’re sure that at any moment someone will come searching for the source of the power outage you just caused.
You’re sure you’re moments away from getting absolutely annihilated. You wouldn’t be surprised if they came in with loaded guns— this is the government after all, they can do whatever they want.
You’re sure you—
“Hello?” an unfamiliar voice calls out from behind you and you freeze.
“What the fuck?” the voice says quietly, like it was meant for only them.
You turn your head to the door. Focusing your eyes in the dark as best as you can, it’s still closed.
You hear shuffling behind you.
No.
You hear steps.
No fucking way.
You hear clambering before the ping of a dense mass hitting metal loudly rings out in the room.
“Jesus H. Christ,” the voice curses, sounding pained.
The voice belongs to a man, one who sounds on the younger side. Slowly moving to your knees, you reach forward feeling for your bag. When you find it, you run your hand along the front until you find the seam of the pocket that houses your phone.
You lift it, and the glow of the screen lights up the room.
“Hey!” the man calls out again, followed by more shuffling.
You quickly lock the screen as your stomach drops. Just as you thought, the voice is coming from inside the Blanks Machine.
“I know you’re out there, what is this?” he shouts.
He sounds angry. You push to your feet, silently standing. Your heart pounds in your chest and your knees practically wobble.
“Seriously? I never asked for this— just let me go.”
You swallow, trying to bring moisture to your dry mouth. Clutching your phone to your chest, you take a deep breath.
“What’s your name?” you ask, voice sounding timid as a mouse.
“My name? Are you kidding?” he laughs derisively.
“Yes, your name.” You try to swallow your nerves away.
“Eddie, now let me out.”
“Eddie?” you whisper, trying to mentally rifle through the roster of Ghosts that were saved in the project files. The Ghosts that the government have on file date all the way back to the ‘50s, there’s got to be at least a thousand Eddies— Edwards, Edwins, Eduardos.
“Is this a sick joke? I get torn to fucking shreds by bats and now you have me in a cage?”
“Bats?” Shredded by bats… that might narrow it down.
“Jesus fucking Christ,” he groans, and the metal of the door clanks under his pounding on the interior wall.
“Okay, hold on,” you rush out, moving to the door of the machine. “Just stand back, they’ll be a puff of air— it’s just air so, um… don’t worry,” you say, shaking your head out of embarrassment. You never expected this to work, therefore you never thought of what you’d have to say if it did work.
“Air— cool,” Eddie says, sounding both bored and annoyed.
You take the silver cross of the wheel handle in your hands. Pushing your full body weight into your movements, you spin it, slowly turning the mechanism. The puff of air emits, blowing your hair back gently and making you blink.
You pull the door back slowly, using your body weight once again to help move the heavy steel. When it’s open, you step back.
“You… you can come out,” you say timidly.
You didn’t know what to expect. Anything could have walked out. Anything at all. He could have been quite literally still a Blank, an all white mannequin that had now gained the ability to think and talk. He could have been a generic human, just eyes, nose, ears, and a mouth. He could have been anything.
The clank of chains followed by the barely visible image of a man appears in front of you. He’s taller than you, 5’10, maybe 5’11, slender, long wavy hair. It’s hard to make out his features in the dim light of the room, but he’s not just a Blank, he’s not just a generic human, he’s loaded to look exactly as he had looked in his life. Remarkable.
You speak, you introduce yourself, you say more words, but your mind is elsewhere. It worked. It was successful.
“Hello?” Eddie says, stepping closer to you, waving a hand to get your attention.
“Sorry— I was just thinking.”
“What is this?”
“Uh— it’s called a Blanks Output Machine, it’s peripheral hardware— simplified, it’s a printer… kind of— not really.
“Not really?”
“Well, it does a lot more than just printing. It, uh, it basically transfers recorded human consciousness onto a Blank,” you say leaving out most of the complex details. Eddie still looks at you, riddled with confusion.
“Why was I in there?”
“You were in there… because… um— Eddie?” you pause looking at him.
“What?”
“What year is it?”
“1986?”
“It’s not 1986.”

A Big List of Fantasy Subgenres
I decided to make a list of just some of the subgenres out there. You may notice some do overlap, but they are all terms people search for, so if your story falls under more than one, remember to use it as a search term/tag for it.
You’ll notes that I did add a few sci-fi related ones, just in case someone is writing a blend.
A 🔒 means tread carefully or you may face criticism.
Plot-Related Fantasy Subgenres
Magical Realism: The real world but with hints of magic or fantasy
Sword and Sorcery: sword-wielding heroes on violent adventures involving magic.
Dark Fantasy: Fantasy that does not shy away from violence and horror. It often has a gloomy tone.
Grimdark Fantasy: An even darker sibling of dark fantasy. This may include dystopian settings, amoral characters, and great violence.
Mythic Fantasy: Fantasy inspired my myth, legend, folklore, or fairytales.
Arthurian Fantasy: Retellings of (or stories based on) Arthurian legends.
Fairytale Fantasy: fantasy stories that are inspired by or retellings of fairytales

Military Fantasy: Fantasy that focuses on people in the military, and often includes the politics that come with it
Political Fantasy: A focus on political drama in a fantasy world. Example: Game of Thrones
Hard Fantasy: A world of hard-set rules on how the world works. Magic has rules, and how it fits in the world is obvious

Heist Fantasy: Fantasy, but a group of people trying to steal something. Examples: Six of Crows, The Lies of Locke Lamora
Comic Fantasy/Comedy Fantasy: Fantasy, but the main goal is humor

Aesthetic Related:
Aesthetics are the feel something gives off. To get the right one, make sure to search the tag to see if the feel fits your story. These are not really subgenres, but are still a way for people to describe what they are looking for in a story.
This list is just a small number of the aesthetics people search for.
SETTING FEEL RELATED:
Adventurecore: adventure in the wilderness
Cottagecore: A romantization of rural (often secluded) life. Also known as: farmcore, countrycore
Cottagegore: The dark sibling to cottagecore. Also known as: Dark Cottagecore, Goth Cottagecore
Prairecore: based off the American prairie colonizers
Dark Academia: Primarily focuses on early 1900’s upper-class European academics with a dark tint. It romanticizes education.
Light Academia: It romanticizes education without being as dark as it’s beforementioned older sibling.
Plaguecore: Takes inspiration from the bubonic plague pandemic’s plague doctors, but often mixed with Gothic Victorian.
Medievalcore: Aesthetics of the middle ages
CHARACTER RELATED:
Royalcore: Aesthetics based on a romanticized version of western European royalty.
Princecore
Princesscore
Kingcore
Queencore
Knightcore
Witchcore: a romanization of the modern perception of witchcraft
Wizardcore: based off the standard fantasy wizard
Roguecore: Inspired by the Dnd class.
Rangercore: Inspired by Tolkien Rangers.
CREATURE RELATED:
Mermaidcore: based on the mythology of mermaids
Selkiecore: Based on the myth of the selkie; a seal shapeshifter that is often trapped on shore after a human steals the seal skin, but always yearns for the sea
Dragoncore: The tag is often used for dragon/human hybrids with a habit of hoarding treasure, but also just anything with dragons
Cryptidcore: associated with cryptozoology. Example: X-Files
Ghostcore: ghosts, spirits, and cemeteries.
🔒Goblincore: Based on goblin folklore, this is about finding beauty in things not typically seen as such. Goblins are sometimes seen as antisemitic, so do your research.
Unicorncore: based off the modern idea of unicorns (glitter, pastels, magic).
🔒Elfcore: Inspired by Tolkien-style elves. Can be based on nature-loving elves, or high elves. There are criticisms that high-elves are always portrayed racist and bigoted, while also seen as “more advanced,” more intelligent, and more elite in general than others simply because they are born that way.
Fairycore: often based off the modern idea of what a fairy is(winged, soft pastels). Also called: Faecore
🔒Changelingcore: inspired by the folklore of fairy changlings(where fairies would swap human babies for fairies), but also used by people of the Neurodivergent communities who are often made to feel like outsiders.

Writing a captivating opening chapter
Tumblr media
Introducing engaging characters- Your characters should be having a intriguing personality why? because when readers start reading the first chapter and doesn't find it engrossing, they just stop reading the book so if you start the book interesting then the reader will keep on reading it.
example- In a crime thriller there was a detective named Maya Gates She’s a seasoned investigator haunted by the unsolved murder of her sister. Her determination is to crack the mystery case forward by the hint she got a prophecy that her sister had made.
Tumblr media
Make a problem- After creating a intriguing aura or personality the character should also be having a problem or poses questions that also have a resolution this ignites curiosity and keeps reader turning pages.
Tumblr media
Set the Scene- Describe the problem so vividly and engrossing that the reader also feels present in the scene.
example-  Imagine a historical romance set in 19th-century London. The opening chapter describes the gas lit streets, the opulent ballroom of Lady Pembroke’s mansion, and the scent of roses mingling with heavy smoke. Readers step into this vividly painted world.
Tumblr media
Critical Gamble- Clearly convey what’s at risk for your characters. Whether it’s love, survival, or a quest for justice, ensure readers to understand the sacrifice.
example-  In a dystopian sci-fi novel, humanity faces extinction due to a deadly virus. The protagonist, Dr. Alex Turner, discovers a hidden research facility with a potential cure. The sacrifices are life and death, and readers are invested in Alex’s quest.
Tumblr media
Foreshadow- Means that an indication of something that will happen in the future within the story. By foreshadowing, writers create anticipation and intrigue, allowing readers to sense that significant events or outcomes are on the horizon.
example- Juliet see 's something strange looking like animal later she finds out that it was the savior of the world.
Thank you for reading!

𖦹 attack on titan roleplay search 𖦹
hi! i'm currently looking for rp partners. i don't use tumblr, and this account is only for searching for rp partners. this post will have some info ab me, how i rp, and the current ships i'm interested in. if you're interested, please dm me here or on discord (cassekk).
Tumblr media
ੈ✩‧₊˚༺☆༻ੈ✩‧₊˚
about me
i'm 21 and from the usa! my timezone is cst (central standard time). i have a pretty free schedule right now. i use discord to rp, and i only rp mxm, canon x canon, 3rd person, past tense, adv. lit/novella style only! i'm looking for a long-term rp partner that is 18+! age is non-negotiable. i would prefer that both of us verify with each other that we are, in fact, 18+ before proceeding to the actual roleplay.
i first began roleplaying at around 11 waaay back when people used to find partners at places like omegle, kik, shamchat, etc. and then would move to either skype, chatzy, or insta! the good ol' days. i stopped at around age 16 for reasons i won't disclose, but i'd like to get back into it. writing is a passion of mine, and roleplaying allows me to hone my writing skills and have fun at the same time. i enjoy creating wonderful pieces of fiction that can serve as an escape from reality! it's so comforting and freeing. it's been a while since i've last written, and to get myself prepared for roleplaying i brush up on my reading. reading a lot, for me, makes me feel more confident about my vocabulary, and actually refreshes my mind about writing. kind of like a reset.
i would like for my partner to write in the same style as me, and just generally be laidback. and i generally expect them to have a good grasp on grammar. i'm okay with nsfw as long as it's in addition to the plot of our rp (i.e., i won't start an rp just to be nsfw; i'd like a good plot and for both of us to be very invested in it). now, if we have a great plot in mind and our characters just happen to be very affectionate... that is more than encouraged. i also really hope that my rp partner will try to stick to the character's canon personality to the best of their ability.

nsfw info
i can write as sub, switch, and/or dom. for omegaverse, i can write as omega and/or alpha. i'm fine with some more "taboo" topics such as: noncon, inc*st, age gaps, etc. i'm not, however, comfortable with writing about EDs. basically, just ask me if there are certain controversial topics you'd like to include and i'll let you know. i'll most likely be cool with it.

eruri — top!erwin x bottom!levi only. i prefer to write for levi.
erejean — top!eren x bottom!jean. i can write for either of them.
zekeren — top!eren x bottom!zeke. i prefer to write for eren, but i could also write for zeke.
zevi — top!zeke x bottom!levi. i prefer to write for levi.
ererei — top!eren x bottom!reiner. i prefer to write for eren.

more rp info
some genres i enjoy writing are: sci-fi, fantasy, horror/thriller, action, adventure, apocalyptic, dystopian, mystery, and/or a combination of them all! i also enjoy adding elements from different tv shows and movies or placing them in different video game universes. i really enjoy worldbuilding, and the possibilities are endless, so we could come up with something very creative! bits of inspiration from this show, and that game, etc., however we want. i prefer writing with AUs — writing in canonverse doesn't interest me too much. but who knows, that might change in the future.
i have an rp example from a past rp i did if you wish to see a snippet of how i write.

my discord is cassekk. if you're interested in starting an rp with me, send a message here or there (preferably there) and pitch any ideas you have! if we match well, we would verify our ages and get the ball rolling :) i'd love to become friends as well. i'm not very good at keeping conversations ooc going, but i'd still love to. my carrd has a more condensed version of this post: https://cassekk.carrd.co/
thanks for reading!
