Things are a bit late in the garden this year. The 'red' carrots I planted May 12 are very unimpressive; the foliage is starting to die off, meaning that they are done growing, but they are small and more of a deep orange than red. The wax beans just started producing. They have a good flavor and are nicely stringless, which I appreciate. Tomatoes are going to bury me in the next month; I will make so much sauce! The cucumbers I planted - three separate times - come up and then die off before ever producing a full-sized cuke. Do not know WHAT's up with that.
Also, it's elderberry time. I need to get all the rest of the peaches preserved somehow and also pick and process elderberry. Help!

Pig weed
My 83 year old Nana calls this “Hog’s Weed, that’s what Daddy would call it. The horses eat it and all things eat it”. She is a Southern Maryland native who grew up living off the land before it was “cool”. Her Mother and Father taught her to forage and what the local plants were called. A quick Wikipedia search proves this plant called is indeed Amarantus Retroflexus, or commonly known as “red-root pigweed”. It is native to the American tropics, but has become widespread on most continents. And it can grow over 9ft high which gives it quite the stature of observational curiosity on one’s landscape. The leaves, boiled and eaten with garlic, chili peppers, coconut and turmeric are an Indian dish known as thoran. It is high in calcium, phosphorus, protein, and iron. It’s seeds can be eaten raw or cooked, and used in bread, cereal or as a thickener. An exceptionally nutritious fodder if used sparingly.

Hello ☺ I'm starting a new blog in 2022!
I haven't been on Tumblr in ages and actually "quit" all social media for 1.5 years, but I feel ready to start using social media for good, like pursuing my dreams to write, create, and adventure full time.
I love foraging, food, plants, and exploring enchanted places...and much more. Hoping to share some good nuggets with the world here.
Xx

One evening my daughter and I went out to look at a type of wild sedum (a succulent) growing on a hill with rocky outcroppings. I know I’ve seen sedum somewhere that blooms pink, but I can’t remember where I saw it.
What we did find was a wild allium variety
I don’t know what species this is, exactly, but it’s very different from the more common wild garlic that grows in lower, wetter areas. This smells most like chives . .
and has a small but lovely bulb. I diced it and a bit of the green up and sauteed them. Always something new!
