The slate in the bts stobin picture says that the DP is Caleb Heymann, the same guy who shot season 4. So we can expect something similar to that season visually, at least in terms of how it was shot.
Tumblr media
He’s also the same guy who shot the Fear Street trilogy. I’m unfamiliar with his other work though.

TWST Horror Movie Headcanons
Tumblr media
Summary: It's Halloween, and what better way to celebrate than a horror movie marathon! The only question is, can the Night Raven boys handle it?
Characters: All main NRC students Pairings: None (Rookvil if you squint) CWs: Very brief mentions of horror tropes and subgenres including gore, jumpscares, monsters, murder, torture, insects, aliens, robots, demons, and more.
A/N: Just a fun little thing to celebrate Halloween! If you want to hear more or are curious to know my justifications for the genre choices, feel free to shoot me an ask!
Heartslabyul
Riddle Rosehearts
Had never seen a horror movie before coming to Night Raven because of his strict and sheltered upbringing
Easily the loudest screamer out of all the boys and the most likely to knock the popcorn bowl onto the floor
Does alright with high-concept thrillers, but can't stomach anything too gory and is extremely sensitive to jumpscares
Favorite subgenre(s): Psychological thriller, gothic horror
Least favorite subgenre(s): Splatter films, slasher films
Ace Trappola
Considers himself a casual horror fan, having seen plenty of scary movies at parties and on television thanks to his brother
Talks big game about being unshakable only to tense up at every scare and then try to laugh it off when questioned
Always easily startled for a solid 12 hours afterward and will jump out of his skin if anyone sneaks up behind him
Favorite subgenre(s): Slasher films
Least favorite subgenre(s): Gothic horror
Deuce Spade
Like Ace, has (unwillingly) seen a lot of horror movies at parties, but he used to pretend to like them to seem cool
Doesn't even try to hide the fact that he's scared because he knows it would still be obvious
Also like Ace, becomes extremely jumpy after the fact and has been known to throw punches at people who catch him off-guard
Favorite subgenre(s): Sci-fi horror, post-apocalyptic horror
Least favorite subgenre(s): Home invasion films
Cater Diamond
An avid horror fan (despite what people may assume) and always stays up to date on the latest releases
Isn't usually affected by shocking visuals or jumpscares when watching alone, but will overplay his reactions when with a group
Cracks jokes during the most tense parts of the movie in order to keep himself from being haunted by them later
Favorite subgenre(s): Comedy-horror, camp horror
Least favorite subgenre(s): Existential horror
Trey Clover
Doesn't really enjoy horror content, but will watch scary movies with other people if invited
Perceived as very stoic and unreactive, but his secret is that he stealthily takes his glasses off when things get too intense
One of the few boys to be relatively unaffected after the fact, if only because he typically never sees the entire movie
Favorite subgenre(s): Psychological thriller
Least favorite subgenre(s): Cannibal horror
Savanaclaw
Leona Kingscholar
Enjoys horror movies just as much as other movies, which is to say he'll take any excuse to sit in one place for as long as possible
Almost never responds to scares with anything more intense than a flick of his tail and a muttered, "Oh shit."
Teases the guys in his dorm that get freaked out by brushing them with his tail or sneaking up behind them
Favorite subgenre(s): Survival horror
Least favorite subgenre(s): Gothic horror, arthouse horror
Ruggie Bucchi
Has mostly seen vintage horror movies because they're easier to find for free online or on television than new releases
Enjoys making fun of the hokey effects and stupid plot points of B movies but is easily caught off-guard by genuine scares
Able to brush off most horror clichés by convincing himself that he is resourceful enough to survive them
Favorite subgenre(s): Camp horror
Least favorite subgenre(s): Psychological thriller
Jack Howl
Has been subjected to numerous werewolf movies throughout his life and has far more bad things to say about them than good
Startled by jumpscares involving loud noises, which will cause his ears to fold back and his tail to puff up
The one his friends will run to for protection after watching an especially scary flick due to both his physical and mental strength
Favorite subgenre(s): Natural horror, creature features (not involving werewolves)
Least favorite subgenre(s): Werewolf fiction
Octavinelle
Azul Ashengrotto
Fairly squeamish about most types of horror content but would never admit to it
Keeps a flawless poker face throughout the entire runtime of any scary movie despite being internally scared shitless
Always interrogates the Leech twins afterwards about how they would respond were a killer to infiltrate Octavinelle dorm
Favorite subgenre(s): Giallo films
Least favorite subgenre(s): Aquatic horror, cosmic horror
Jade Leech
Finds horror content to be a fascinating way to learn about human culture and its collective fears
Always pays rapt attention to the movie, nodding and saying "Interesting," when something especially gruesome happens
Sometimes he'll bring along a pencil and notepad and pretend to take notes on the killer's methods to fuck with his dormmates
Favorite subgenre(s): Natural horror, cosmic horror
Least favorite subgenre(s): Zombie movies
Floyd Leech
Equally as interested in horror as his brother, mostly because he's impressed by all the murder methods humans can come up with
Laughs and claps like an excited child every time someone gets killed or otherwise dismembered on screen
Literally completely unbothered by all manner of violence and has zero issues falling asleep after a scary movie
Favorite subgenre(s): Splatter films, torture films
Least favorite subgenre(s): None (science has yet to discover a trend as to which movies Floyd will dislike)
Scarabia
Kalim Al-Asim
Isn't necessarily a die-hard horror fan, just enjoys having movie nights of all sorts with his friends and dormmates
Will startle at jumpscares but is always delighted to the point of giggling at being caught off-guard
The type to clap and say "That was fun!" as the credits roll while everyone around him sits in horrified silence
Favorite subgenre(s): Comedy-horror, camp horror
Least favorite subgenre(s): Apocalyptic horror
Jamil Viper
Mostly indifferent to horror as a genre, will watch it if asked but doesn't really seek it out or avoid it
Isn't affected by most kinds of scares except the ones involving bugs, which will fuck him up irreparably for days
Quick to crack down on any students that try to scare each other after the screening is over, despite secretly finding it amusing
Favorite subgenre(s): Psychological thriller, mythological horror
Least favorite subgenre(s): Natural horror (especially when bugs are involved)
Pomefiore
Vil Schoenheit
Being in film research club, he doesn't shy away from studying films of any genre, including horror
Will sometimes grip Rook's arm hard enough to bruise during especially tense scenes (Rook doesn't mind)
Able to maintain his composure by commenting on and critiquing the cinematography and special effects
Favorite subgenre(s): Arthouse horror
Least favorite subgenre(s): Zombie movies, body horror
Rook Hunt
A general film appreciator, but finds the costuming and SFX makeup used in classic horror movies especially fascinating
Finds something to compliment about every killing, whether it's the acting, the creativity of the murderer's method, or otherwise
Often the unintentional source of scares in the dorm after a horror movie screening due to his naturally stealthy footsteps
Favorite subgenre(s): Found footage, arthouse horror
Least favorite subgenre(s): None (he finds beauté in every film he watches)
Epel Felmier
Initially gets into horror due to it being a "masculine" interest, but eventually comes to appreciate the complexities of the genre
Not easily affected by jumpscares, but when he is, he'll shout at the screen and cuss out whatever made him jump
Better at shaking off the creeping feeling of dread afterwards than most of his friends, or at least pretending like he is
Favorite subgenre(s): Folk horror, mythological horror
Least favorite subgenre(s): Backwoods horror
Ignihyde
Idia Shroud
Simultaneously a huge horror fan and also a gigantic weenie who is convinced that creatures will manifest in his room at night
Nitpicks the clichés and inaccuracies in science-based horror to the point that it annoys his fellow viewers
Often stays up all night playing video games after watching a scary movie but proceeds to seek out horror content anyway
Favorite subgenre(s): Dark fantasy, sci-fi horror (only the ones about aliens)
Least favorite subgenre(s): Techno-horror
Ortho Shroud
Also a member of film research club and enjoys analyzing movies of all kinds to add to his databases
Doesn't experience fear in the same way other organic beings do, but simulates the typical responses in order to feel included
Likes asking Idia for new gear and upgrades inspired by his favorite horror villain designs (usually the cool robots)
Favorite subgenre(s): Techno-horror, sci-fi horror
Least favorite subgenre(s): Slasher films
Diasomnia
Malleus Draconia
Mostly desensitized to horror content due to Lilia's fascination with it, but still enjoys the thrill when a film can surprise him
Doesn't typically react to scares, but there has been at least one instance where he has singed the pillow he was holding in shock
Demonic horror films are banned in Diasomnia because others seeing his shadow after a screening caused too much chaos
Favorite subgenre(s): Gothic horror, dark fantasy
Least favorite subgenre(s): Techno-horror
Lilia Vanrouge
Possibly the biggest horror buff in the entirety of Night Raven and claims to have seen every horror film ever made
Surprisingly quiet when watching scary movies with others so as not to spoil any of the scares
Enjoys pranking other students by spooking them after the movie, especially Silver and Sebek
Favorite subgenre(s): Camp horror, vampire films
Least favorite subgenre(s): None
Silver
Not really into movies since he usually falls asleep during them but is familiar with horror as a result of being raised by Lilia
Actually prefers movies with a lot of jumpscares and shock value because it's the only kind that can keep him awake
Accustomed to his father's attempts to scare him but will still jump and reach for his sword when startled
Favorite subgenre(s): Slasher films, natural horror
Least favorite subgenre(s): Backwoods horror
Sebek Zigvolt
Despite being exposed to horror at a young age, still very easily frightened no matter how much he pretends not to be
Will put his arm out to shield others in response to scares only if Malleus is present at the screening, otherwise curls into a ball
Second loudest screamer out of all the boys, bested only by Riddle, which makes him a prime target for post-movie pranks
Favorite subgenre(s): Gothic horror
Least favorite subgenre(s): Techno-horror, sci-fi horror

Okay I'm sorry I'm going to be insufferable about the live action for a while but I ALSO wanted to say I loved that they let Kaya have little moments with Nami and Luffy, like talking to Nami in her room and Luffy giving his passionate speech to her about Merry and the stars in her eyes when he describes the ship as a home and how they'll take care of her.
And even though Usopp got less moments to shine overall in the fights, they did take the time to give him several moments with Kaya so that their relationship still felt solid and heartfelt and had weight to it, like when she slaps him and tries to drive him out it genuinely hurt to see. And I like the follow up to that moment when he says "no, I'm done running, I'm not leaving you until I know you'll be safe" even though he knows at that moment that his relationship with her might be ruined because she doesn't believe him, and as much as it sucks that she doesn't, it's understandable why because Usopp is an established liar and Kuro has acted as a surrogate parental figure to her since her parents died, and they put an appropriate amount of emphasis on how their deaths have affected her and how lonely she's been in that giant house all by herself, too sick to leave. And as a result it really makes it clear part of why her relationship with Usopp is so important, because he's the only person she regularly interacts with who doesn't have that servant dynamic with her, he's just her friend having fun with her and getting her to laugh, and he tells her stories of the world outside her window that she doesn't get to see herself. Also also I like how part of Usopp leaving gets tied to her wanting to learn how to take care of herself and be her own person. Up until now she was so dependent on other people and didn't get to be in control of her own life so it feels fitting for her story.
And in giving her that connection to Nami, and the theme about not letting other people control her, it really adds to her characterisation. I loved that moment where they're hiding from Kuro, and she grabs a knife from the table, and holds it with that determined look in her eye. And at First Nami shakes her head and whispers "don't", but then Kaya says "I'm done letting other people control me" (paraphrased) and Nami's expression changes and you can see the moment when she realises what this means for Kaya, and then they both charge from under the table at Kuro together even knowing that there's no way they'll win but wanting to go out fighting anyways. Man that was such a good moment for both of them. The more I think about it the more I actually really love what they did with the Syrup village arc. The way they played with the genre and used the mansion as a set piece was really creative and worked really well and was a lot of fun imo. Tbh I genuinely prefer Kuro as a villain in the live action. And making Kaya the heir to a shipyard makes so much sense not only for her character but also for Usopp's, like as far as I'm concerned that's canon to me now. They did so much justice to Kaya's character imo so I just wanted to gush about that.
I do feel bad for Merry, they actually killed him off in the live action! But I'm getting the feeling that Oda is more willing to kill characters and play with some of his usual formulas now that he's going outside of the shounen manga genre and playing in a new sandbox with a new audience so to speak. But this death does make sense. Merry doesn't have any importance in the series after that point so killing him off doesn't effect the story, and it adds more to the slasher horror vibe they introduced to the setting. It's possible they might do the same with other characters depending on how far the series gets, like Conis's dad for example (Pell I'm not sure about since he might be relevant later). Also ngl it adds a bit more sentiment to the Merry's name as a tribute to Merry. Rip live action Merry, too good for this world.

If you're still doing requests: What if the slashers had a S/O who could control animals? (Straight up, this mf could make a group of rats conga line with a few hand movements, lol) Bonus points: Maybe this ability was the reason the slashers didn't kill them initially? (I love your headcanons so far, btw! Especially the geese one, lol I hope you have a lovely day/night!)
HEEHEHEHEHEHEHE I LOVE IT!!!!! Animals r so cool lol. I'm remember Ratcatcher II from The Suicide Squad and I am loving it. For some reason I'm reminded of a story where this one girl did like freeform taxidermy?? Only tenuously connected, but hey my brain is missing a few washers. I'm glad you like the geese!!!! I love geese so, so much. I see them at school and its all heart eyes.
CWs: mentions of violence (it's slashers y'all, they go stab and we go "yes king <3", cursing (think y'all are used to that by now lol), let me know if I missed anything!!!
Vincent Sinclair: I genuinely think this boy is very soft. I firmly believe he loves animals and the soft side of life, so he would love that you have such a connection with animals. I think he'd worry about if the animals are ok when all this happens, but he thinks its so cool. I think he'd beg you to bring animals around so he could pet them and sketch them with a proper model.
I think, in Ambrose, the most likely animals on hand would be squirrels, rabbits, and snakes, none of which he's noticed behave the way they do when you're summoning them for protection. You just make a solid line of defense, and he knows better than to fuck with snakes, so he just stops and waits for Bo. Bo is terrified and probably thinks you're Satan, but Vinny is gonna be absolutely fascinated. He begs Bo to keep you around, and Bo was a little too scared to deny it. Would make sure to get you anything you need if it tires you out and would have food and water on hand for the animals. Jonesy is off-limits, unless she's run off and they can't find her (I feel like you can kinda sense the animals around you??).
Bo Sinclair: I just have a gut feeling that this boy is terrified of supernatural shit, at least if you use that supernatural shit against him lol. He loves asking you to do stuff like this as a party trick. Wants to use you to help when hunting (animals), but would also test to see if you can control humans. I think also in softer moments he would love interacting with animals he usually doesn't get to see up close. And, if he pisses you off, I think you could use the woodland critters to your advantage. . . thefUCK DID THESE SQUIRRELS COME FROM--
Would feel the same way about you controlling Jonesy, using it only if she's lost and possibly in danger (but he's also the type to say "she can handle herself" so he'd wait a little bit). Did not appreciate being attacked by the small creatures when he tried to catch you, but he had his shotgun and you cared for the animals and were getting tired. It was quite the stalemate, and quite the compromise. Would every once in a while ask you to bring animals around for Lester to play with, or for Vinny to use as models, or even for Jonesy to play with. He's a family man, what can I say
Michael Myers (RZ): as per usual, stoic and seems uncaring. He isn't the most gentle person ever (he was raised in an asylum by a fucked up doctor-I'll talk about him later, but he's gonna handle animals like a small child). Rough but trying his best, doesn't mean to hurt them. I think using animals would be a good therapy technique, give him something to learn how to be soft with. Starts to love when you bring animals around, and learns to be gentle. Back to the beginning though: like a cat, rather predictably. Sometimes glares at the animals, especially if they decide he is the new mama. I think he would hiss, but he doesn't talk so he just glowers until the animal wonders away (but their insistence starts to warm his heart).
I think birds would be what save you from Mikey. He's marching after you in the dark nature-y parts of Haddonfield, and you summon birds to swarm him. I don't think he'd really react much to the pecking and scratching, might be more sensitive to the noise, but is overall just curious. Like "well this is new." (I think creativity and novelty is like the key way to get him to spare you). He likes to study, and would absolutely observe your power. Y'all stare at each other while you catch your breathe and the birds swarm the Boogeyman, and eventually he turns and walks off. You start catching sight of him following you, eventually, but he never made a move to harm you so you let it be. Eventually becomes very soft with the animals and loves feeling how soft they are, feeling their warmth and feeling them breathe while they lay next to you on his chest.
Thomas Hewitt: I’m sorry y’all, I’m just convinced that this family is terrified of the supernatural. With every superpower, Thomas is a little freaked, Luda Mae is looking for holy water, Hoyt is convinced the devil has finally come for him (he should be worried more about me), and Monty is laughing at Hoyt. However, I think this power would be one that wouldn’t freak them out as much. Like gee animals?? Hoyt and Monty particularly are gonna think you’re harmless, and Luda is going to be a little hesitant around you but overall think you won’t hurt anyone, and Thomas is gonna be so soft. He thinks it’s the cutest thing ever. Like awwww you’re animal themed 🥺🥺 They’d definitely make you take care of rats and maybe get the animals (if they have any on their farm??) to come to slaughter easier. Thomas wouldn’t like that idea, he wants to keep you protected from all the violent shit, and Hoyt would be pissed if you refused. Will start being an ass and Thomas starts to glare at him... and you call on the rabbits and birds. Hoyt never yells at you again. Ever.
I think more small woodland critters would be the most readily accessible. Rabbits, squirrels, birds (can y’all tell I like birds yet lol?). Rats, you’re going to find rats in the basement ad get them to chew through your bindings. When Tommy comes back and finds you free, terrified, and surrounded by rats, he’s going to go get the rest of the family and let you live. I another one that loves loves loves getting to interact with animals up close. Loves petting rabbit (I also love rabbits). Loves the birds landing on his finger like a Disney princess. Feels bad when he has to butcher pigs, and keeps you away from the family cannibal business at all costs. Understands that you’re connected to animals and doubts its any easier when its you know...humans. Mesmerized by you, your powers, and your looks
Brahms Heelshire: he’s a bit conflicted. One one hand, this boy was undoubtably a bookworm, I mean what else could he do while being exiled to the walls?? Anyways, he feels like you’re a character from his childhood books and it makes him love you even more, already associating you with pleasant memories. On the other hand, what the fuck people aren’t supposed to do that????? I think he learns about your power while he’s still in the walls, and he gets over it pretty quickly seeing how careful you are with the doll and other critters you find around the mansion. You refuse to use the rat traps and at first he’s a little annoyed, but then he sees your power and starts to understand why. I think when y’all finally do meet, he’s trying to be as non-threatening as possible and you have gathered an army of rats. He doesn’t move toward you, just starts talking softly and trying to explain who he is. You’d eventually have to ask him to repeat it all cause you were busy trying to not have a heart attack and a stroke at once. Y’all manage to come to an understanding.
While out of the walls, he will pester you with as many questions as he can get out of his mouth. He’s a curious boy, what can I say? I think, like Mikey, he would be a little rough on the animals first before learning to properly handle them. For the love of every god, please use the animals like therapy animals. He can play and pet with them while also learning to confront the trauma of his bullshit parents. I think he would really like rabbits, cause he has the childlike center, and could learn to be decently ok with the rats but I don’t think he will touch them. When deer wander through, he gets super excited. I think he would warm up to a cat or a dog in the house. WAIT NO HE’D MAKE A DOLL OF THE PET TO MATCH HIS DOLL AWWWWWWW!!! Would also probably make woodland dolls. He’d be happy that his doll isn’t lonely anymore :D
Alright, I’ve got the first 5. Let me know if y’all want more!!! I love fluff like this its so cuteeee And n case it wasn’t obvious, I really like birds and rabbits (my favorite plushies are rabbis :3). I can’t tell y’all how honored I feel to be getting requests and follows and just I’m soft 🥺. I’ve never been real popular or had like a solid community of my own so this is all really special to me, and I will be thanking y’all as often as possible <33333

Killer Frequency is pretty fun. I had a good time with it.
It's a cute little first-person indie game about manning a radio station while a slasher film is happening outside. For reasons that make sense in context, the emergency phone line gets looped into your radio show so you can sub in for a police dispatch, with no officers to dispatch.
What this means is, while there is a mystery to solve and clues to gather, this takes a backseat to trying to navigate a variety of slasher horror scenarios over the phone. People call in because they're being chased by The Killer, and you have to puzzle out a way to chart the course for their survival. Every character in the game can live or die depending on your choices.
The radio DJ aesthetic provides a neat bit of comical flavor, as all of these emergency calls are going out live over the airwaves - and the protagonist does not drop character as the enthusiastic host, continuing to perform and maybe indulge in a bit of shameless self-promotion for the station while trying to help people. It's great.
It's a short game; i finished it in a day. But it's charming and witty, and also genuinely suspenseful. Gets a solid recommendation from me.

the sex scene in slasher season 1 last episode is hilarious
i've never seen anyone looking as thoroughly unsatisfied as Sarah Bennett after the police officer fucked her for like solid 3 seconds before coming
seeing that genuine, utter disappointment on Katie's face had me rolling on the floor

where did the dislike for self insert fanfics come from? I'm genuinely curious, cuz the only point i've seen made is the "it's cringy/unrealistic" one, and that's coming from folks who ship slasher x slasher pairings, or make long, drawn-out posts explaining why Michael Myers' original character wasn't built on ableism. so, automatically, their claim has no solid footing.
i understand it just not being your thing - cuz personally, self inserting also isn't my cup of tea, just can't comfortably put myself in those situations without feeling strange, and of course, the way some write the slashers may make me recoil just the tiniest bit - but the sheer vitriol stuffed into some of these posts is ASININE.
you'll have them spewing the most unnecessary hate for what's essentially just a harmless hobby/past time, pulling out every keyword they can remember from twitter and reddit, and when they're met with others saying "this is some misguided hostility friend" they'll use the "ur so sensitive lol" line. damn, you're telling me people don't like having their inoffensive interests shat on for no valid reason? wack.
idk, i just think it's a little dumb and completely unnecessary. no one's saying you have to like that part of the fandom, you can ignore and completely block it out to save your sanity, but i truly cannot find any reason to genuinely dislike it to that extent lol.
the x reader community may need a "how to be inclusive for dummies" book, and they lowkey don't know how to tag their stuff accordingly sometimes, but damn, some of the shit I've seen really just seems to come from people with nothing better to do with their lives. you're already on tumblr my guy, you are no better than the average fool. no matter how many rules you try to bend, or how well you leap through those loopholes, we're all cringe :((. get over yourself for once and maybe LIVE a little, jeez.

What I watched this week 3/13-3/19
this week was a little skimpy because I had to work so much, but fret not I still have plenty of stuff for y'all
The Shining (1980, Dir. Stanley Kubrick)
Tumblr media
Did y'all know I go to the "overlook" (The Timberline lodge up in Mt Hood national forest) every year in the summer? It's a beautiful place. Anyways you'd think with that I'd have seen the shining by now, but nope! This was my first time ever watching it! And man - what a film! Nothing beats a well made horror movie, in my humble opinion, with that sweet spot blend of the meta-physical and the physical threats, threatening, stylistic cinematography, and a small-yet-solid cast of characters portrayed by talented actors really giving it there all makes for such a satisfying watch!
I've never read the original novel, where most of the subtext and themes of those movie -obviously - are drawn from, and I likely never will as I generally dislike fiction. However. I still found the themes permeant and the subtext moving despite not having it in full context. That, in my own opinion, is what makes the Shining such an effective adaptation - although I am rather uninformed as I've only ever heard people talk about the book.
Definitely one of my favorite horror movies -5/5
Enemy (2013, dir. Denis Villeneuve)
Tumblr media
Okay so I'm just gonna be frank - I am bad with metaphors and symbolism. I can understand character growth, plot structure, timelines, cinematography, lighting, peroid accuracy, and all sorts of more technical and object elements of a movie. I mostly critique based off of these things, I stay in my lane. It's not that I can't ever understand a metaphor or pick up on any forms of symbolism, it's just not really how my brain works.
That being said, I still really really enjoyed this movie. It was a well made slow paced pysch. thriller that tackles adultery and cheating in a way I've never seen a movie do before. Villeneuve's style, as always, adds such a rich, amazing, and lonely air to the film - one which I think helps enhance it's message.
To condense, this is a film about double lives, about two drastically different halves inside one body. It's about secrets and hiding and ultimately letting the facade all down and the chaos all of that will cause in one's life (illustred quite well by the ending scenes of the film.)
I can't really describe this film, just go watch it for yourself. Unless you can't stand spiders. 4.5/5
Halloween (1978, Dir. John Carpenter)
Tumblr media
After marathoning all 6 Scream movies over the course of 2 weeks, my hopes were really low for Halloween. Specifically because Scream, at least the first one, is a pretty self admitted satire of tropes Halloween brought to the table. But I was really surprised with how good this one was!
I don't really know why? Maybe it's because I don't tend to super love what is super popular? But I'm happy to say Halloween holds up and is a genuinely creepy slasher. John Carpenter's slow, meandering style really lends itself well to the genre - making the final kills feel well deserved and establishing a true sense of fear in the audience. Especially with how hidden Michael Meyer's is from the camera for the first 2 acts.
This films lighting and cinematography are also on another level, the way the film gets both literally and tonally darker as the day drags on, the way Michael is always kept in the shadows, the intimate, stalker-esque camera... It's amazing!
Me and the friend I watched Scream with are doing the same thing but for the Halloween franchise now, but less frequently cause there's no upcoming film. So stay tuned as I work my way through 9 more fucking Halloween movies.
This movie was really well made, though not something I would consider a personal favorite. 4/5.
Breaking Bad Season 4 (2011 shrn. Vince Gilligan)
Tumblr media
So I'm just about finished with season 4 and hollllyyyyyyy shit Vince Gilligian is a mastermind. I've really been enjoying the plotline with Hank catching up to Walt + Gus, and am really excited for the payoff in S5. Jesse's arc continues to carry the show and I want nothing but the best for this man. Please oh god Mike just help this man he NEEDS it.
The scene where he went back and cussed out his old rehab therapist was *amazing* and really hit home with just how far gone he thinks he is and gives you a really good look into his pysche. Speaking of Pysches Walt's undoing is finally starting to rear it's head and boy howdy am I ever ready for that clown to kick the bucket. Fuck that guy.
I also really enjoyed the Gus backstory, and Max's death is probably one of my favorite scenes in the entire series (is that a spoiler? i don't think so...) Anyways brba continues to be a masterpiece and you'll be seeing more of dis.

my thoughts on velvet buzzsaw (2019)
non-spoiler section!!
Right off the bat I'm going to say that I was genuinely excited within the first ten minutes of starting this one. The setting is one that I'm fairly familiar with and the entire set-up is perfect for lots of commentary on the art world and commerce.
However, it was somewhat disappointing by the end. This movie is labelled as a horror movie? But I never found it particularly scary or even simply unsettling? While I still enjoyed watching it, the entire time I was thinking about how it could've been made into so much more. While it was entertaining, it was nothing incredibly special. Velvet Buzzsaw is a movie that tries very hard to say something meaningful but doesn't quite make it.
my final thoughts:
A solid 6/10 movie. I would recommend it if you lower your expectations; don't go into it expecting intelligent commentary or effective uses of horror. It's just a good goofy watch and Jake is wonderful in it.
Morf Vandewalt, my beloved 💗✨

❗️spoiler section under the cut❗️
Velvet Buzzsaw was a very conflicting watch for me. On one side, I liked the concept and the characters but hated the execution of it all. Each character is distinct and vividly played, which I think is vital for movies like these where basically everyone dies. But there's never really a clear purpose for these caricatures other than haha, art snobs are funny! Which, they are, don’t get me wrong. But like…that’s such a surface level thing to pick at?
I read an article from the director where he talked about his inspiration for the film. It seems that he went into the movie with the intent of showing how dangerous it can be to view art as more of a commodity than an expression of someone's soul. And that is a worthy subject to explore. The idea of the spirit of a tortured artist going after the people who strive to exploit his pain? Interesting. But the movie never really says anything profound about this. It just tells you, hey, this artist was fucked up!!!! Guess the art is just gonna murder people now lmao.
Any bits of actual horror is extremely underwhelming. For example, they say once that the artist literally mixed his own blood into the paintings? And they completely gloss over that and move on. EXCUSE ME, WHAT? THAT COULD BE SO HORRIFYING TO EXPLORE?? BUT THEN THEY DIDN’T. Even the death scenes…the only one that really resonated with me was Gretchen’s. But that’s only because of how people reacted to her body once she was found. The rest of the deaths are pretty underwhelming.
There’s so much that could’ve been done with this concept. Because the director is right! I think a modern art museum is such an interesting setting for a horror movie. There’s such an idea of art coming from pain and pain being profitable. Because humans love dissecting the human experience, the more gruesome the better, typically. And here you have all of these characters that get too wrapped up in commodifying art. None of the characters are allowed to grow from these failings. Which is fine in a normal slasher. But this movie acts as if it’s an elevated horror. It just seems very confused about whether it wants to be a goofy horror movie or something profound.
Now that I’ve gotten my complaining done, I’ll talk about my favorite parts. First and foremost being Jake Gyllenhaal. With all of my biases removed, this man put his entire ass into playing Morf and you can tell. He’s easily the best realized character and I am absolutely disappointed that he wasn’t allowed to make it through the movie. #JusticeForMorf
Honorable mentions: John Malkovitch as Piers, Toni Collette as Gretchen, and Zawe Ashton as Josephina. They absolutely understood the assignment and I loved their performances. I almost wish there was a little more of John Malkovitch specifically because his portrayal of Piers was so intriguing? He plays an aging artist who seems to be having trouble keeping up with the modern art scene and seeing how jaded he is in the face of the commercialism was so interesting and I wish there was more of it.
Overall…this was such a painfully mediocre watch? I was entertained enough, but I wish it had pushed the envelope. I wish this was a movie that earned the pretentiousness that it uses. Extra props, however, for giving me a brand new Jake Gyllenhaal character that I am in love with. ❤️🥰

Not Your Typical Victim
This is a little thing I’ve had rolling around in my brain since watching the first Halloween film, wondering how Michael would react if he were to find out that his victim was more like him than he thought. It’s not put together well and hasn’t been edited, but I hope you guys like it. 😊
TW: mention of killing, suicide and hospitals, Michael being Michael.
Michael Myers had been watching a house in Haddonfield, Illinois for a solid four days. He was stalking a single girl who lived alone, fully intent on killing her before the night was over. He watched as her car pulled into the driveway, the engine turning off after a few moments. He watched the girl exit the car and start pulling bags from the backseat, shutting the door with her foot. She made her way to the front door, setting a couple bags down to unlock it. Michael slowly made his way across the street, getting closer to her house. Right as she managed to dig her keys out her pocket, two of the bags she still held ripped. She stopped and just stared down at them.
‘I’m going to fucking kill myself…’ she sighed, bending down to begin to collect the runaway groceries. He hadn’t expected to hear her say that. He watched as she finished fixing her groceries and she unlocked the door, heading inside. Michael moved to a window, looking inside. He watched as she put the groceries away, noting where she kept her knives. When she was finished, she sat down on her couch to watch television. Michael thought it ironic that she chose a type of slasher movie to watch.
It was Halloween, but the air was warm. The girl had several of her windows opened slightly to allow a breeze through. Michael could hear the sounds of the horror film, as well as the phone ringing. The girl rolled her eyes and stood, moving to the phone to answer it.
‘Hello?’ She was silent as she listened to the other person. ‘Ha ha, very funny, David. Happy Halloween to you, too.’ More silence. ‘Wait, someone’s trying to call. Give me a second.’ She switched calls. ‘Yes?’ There was a longer period of silence, during which Michael saw her features change from tired to extremely angry. ‘Listen here, fuckface,’ she spat into the receiver. ‘I told you to leave me alone.’ She slammed the receiver down, accidentally putting the call on speaker.
‘And I told you that we weren’t done.’ It was a male’s voice.
‘Bitch, I said we were done. Take no for an answer and get your ass out of my life! You were caught, and you’re too proud to admit you were a jerk. Actually, jerk doesn’t even begin to cover what you are.’
‘After everything I helped you with, you’re just gonna leave me?’
‘Absolutely. You fucking cheated on me and then tried to say it was my fault! Stop contacting me before the police get involved.’ She hung up, walking to the kitchen. Michael watched as she leaned against the counter for a moment before angrily pushing everything to the floor. He watched her as rage took hold. She grabbed a knife and held it by the tip on the blade. She threw it and it lodged itself into the wall, fairly deep. Michael was actually impressed. She was panting now, the adrenaline already beginning to wear off. ‘May misfortune find you for the rest of your days, you fuck,’ she muttered to herself. She flopped down onto her couch, her eyes glued to the television. Michael could see she genuinely enjoyed horror movies. He wondered if she would act just like the girls in the movies she loved.
There was a knock at her door, and she begrudgingly stood to answer it. Michael had a perfect view from where he stood, looking in. There was a man at her door.
‘Amanda, please,’ he said.
‘Get off my property. Now.’
‘I had to make sure you’re okay. They say there’s a killer on the loose.’
‘And I hope he gets you.’
‘You don’t mean that.’
‘Yes, I do. Now leave, or I’m calling the cops.’ She slammed the door in his face, forcing him to leave. She sat back down on her couch, watching the television again. ‘I’d murder you myself if I had the courage to,’ she said quietly to herself.
Michael moved slowly through the girl’s house, a kitchen knife firmly in his hand. He made his way to her room, finding her asleep. He wanted to relish this one. He moved around to her side of the bed. He grabbed her by her neck and pulled her from her bed, tossing her to the floor. She barely made a sound even though she was now wide awake. She looked up at him, her eyes wide in fear. He crouched down, tilting his head to the side as he made it known he had a knife. He reached out, cupping her cheek in his hand. She shrank away from his touch, but not out of fear. That reaction was one Michael had seen before. He himself had shied away from others touching him. He watched her, his head still tilted. Her arms were held out in front of her face, shielding it. That’s when he noticed a hospital bracelet around her wrist. He tilted his head the other way, his eyes on the bracelet. It was one from the psychiatric ward of a hospital two towns over. She must have been recently released. Or she escaped. He knew in that moment that she wouldn’t die. She was too like him. He couldn’t kill her after all.
Her eyes were closed, already accepting what was about to happen. But it never came. She heard something metallic lightly hit the floor. She slowly opened her eyes to find him staring at her, the knife no longer in his grasp.
‘Aren’t you… going to kill me…?’ she asked. He watched her, saying nothing. Her eyes darted to the knife for a moment, but her gaze rested on Michael. She showed no signs of trying to go for it, just acknowledging it was there. She was either extremely good at hiding her intentions, or she genuinely didn’t want to try it. ‘Th-That’s what you do, right…? Y-You’re here and everyone s-says if someone sees you, th-then they die…’ She was still scared of him at least. Good. Michael leaned toward her slightly, causing her to try to back away. Her back was already pressed against the side of her bed. ‘I-If you’re gonna kill me, just do it. Stop making me wait.’ Michael was genuinely confused. Usually people begged him not to kill them. This girl kept bringing up why he was there, as if she wanted to die. He tilted his head the other way, continuing his silence. She fell silent, watching him. She slowly pushed herself up off the floor, her eyes never leaving him. Michael made no move to stop her. He would still restrain her if he needed to.
She sat on the edge of her bed and Michael finally stood, picking the knife up off the floor. He moved to leave the room when he heard her move on the bed.
‘Wait!’ He stopped and faced her. ‘If you want someone to kill, turn right when you leave through the front door and go five houses down. I think you might enjoy that one.’ He searched her expression for anything that might show she was sending him into a trap, but there was none. Instead, there was a smile on her face. Anyone other than Michael would have found it unsettling, insane even. She was being sincere. Michael silently turned and left her room, leaving her house and heading for the one she had mentioned. He knew exactly who she had sent him to and his grip on the knife tightened.

THANKSGIVING (2023)
Tumblr media
Thanksgiving (2023): A Gory Turkey with a Side of Fun
Title: Thanksgiving
Genre: Slasher
Year: 2023
Country: United States
This Thanksgiving takes a killer turn in a small Massachusetts town. A year after a Black Friday riot turned deadly, a masked maniac with a twisted sense of justice starts picking off residents one by one.
A Town in Terror: Don't expect Shakespearean dialogue here. The plot's pretty straightforward: a slasher on the loose. But what elevates it is the committed cast. Everyone, from seasoned actors like Patrick Dempsey to up-and-coming stars, brings their A-game. Dempsey sheds his McDreamy persona for a more rugged role, while the teens he protects scream and fight with genuine fear (and sometimes humor) in their eyes.
Slashing with Style: The camerawork is slick, following the action with sharp cuts and zooms that heighten the suspense. Sound design is another star: every creak of a floorboard and thud of a knife adds to the tension.
A Flawed Feast: While the acting and technical aspects are commendable, the movie stumbles slightly on character development. We get the basic archetypes - the jock, the influencer, the shy one - but some relationships, like the one between Jessica and her ex-boyfriend Bobby, feel underdeveloped. Their past together is mentioned but not explored, leaving their present dynamic a bit hollow.
Verdict: 4 out of 5 stars
This is a fun slasher flick for horror fans. The gore is impressive, the acting is solid, and the technical aspects are strong. However, a bit more character depth could have truly elevated the film.
Netizens Gobble Up the Fun: Reviews were generally positive, with some praising the film's dark humor and others appreciating its return to classic slasher tropes.
Box Office Bonanza: Made for a modest $15 million, the movie raked in a surprising $46.5 million worldwide.
Trivia Tidbit: Did you know? The film started life as a fake trailer in Quentin Tarantino and Robert Rodriguez's "Grindhouse" (2007). Fan demand eventually led to a full-fledged movie.

I’m curious. If the slashers had a s/o like El from stranger things (has telekinetic powers) how do you think they would react if their s/o got a nose bleed, or worse, passed out?
YEEEEE AN ASKKKKK
imma do this similar to my slashers and geese. I’m gonna do the first 5 so this isn’t too too long, but just tell me if you want the rest of them <333
Also I did established relationships
Vincent Sinclair: If you had explained to him your powers and where the nosebleeds/fainting spells came from, he’d be slightly less freaked out, but still thoroughly concerned. He’s gonna have a little kit put together so that when you’re done he can properly take care of you, and he’ll scramble to find it if you used your powers to dispose of a tourist. I think Vinny would be the kind who’s like “it is what it is, I ain’t gonna question it too much, just look straight ahead” if you get what I mean, like he isn’t gonna study you. He glares at Bo every time he asks you to do it as a “party trick.” 10/10, he Cares.
Now, if you told him about your powers by demonstrating, he would probably freak out a little lot. He’s just completely gobsmacked that you’re doing this, with your mind????? If you passed out, he might too. He’ll have 3 simultaneous heart attacks, he thinks you died. If its just bleeding, he’s still freaking out, but its only 1 heart attack <3
Bo Sinclair: he’s gonna be like a kid in a candy store, I’m sorry. He thinks its the neatest shit ever and will beg you to do little party tricks. At first he doesn’t realize the nosebleeds are from that (though maybe you wouldn’t get one cause its literally parlor tricks?? no idea), but once he does he feels kinda bad and asks less...but doesn’t stop completely lol. He is just so fucking excited lol. If you get a heavy amount of bleeding or pass out, he’s gonna freak (especially if its the first time that happens or the first time he sees you having powers). If he didn’t know you have powers, he will go numb and into shock. He thinks your dead, and he loses his shit. If anyone was alive near him, he’d tear them apart. He cradles you and is so soft because he genuinely thought you were dead.
Now, if he knew these were possible side effects, he’d be more prepared and still a little concerned but he can hide it better now. Either way, his aftercare for this is basically the same: he gets a rag to wipe off the blood and carries you to somewhere soft for you to recuperate. I think he’s a little softer with you most times anyways, and especially right now.
Michael Myers: another one who I think would treat it like a party trick. I also think he’d laugh his ass off when it surprised people. Like you may not see it or hear it, but he’s shaking with his laughter and letting out little exhales. If its just a nosebleed, he doesn’t really care, he figures you can handle it yourself. I don’t think he’s gonna have a solid grasp of human anatomy, so he wouldn’t understand that a nosebleed could be a bad sign. It softens him a bit, like he might bring you a rag, but he looks at it like a scraped knee (plus he’s had plenty of nosebleeds and other injuries, and he’s a fucking impenetrable mountain, it takes a lot for him to consider it a big injury). If its a lot of blood or you pass out, he is Scaret. Predictable, he won’t show it normally, but he will pick you u p and carry you somewhere safe and do his best to help you. He’ll wipe the blood off and probably leave half of his candy stash next to you🥺
When you feel better or wake up, he’ll be a little gentler with you for a few days, especially if he didn’t know about your powers beforehand. I think he may believe in the supernatural and paranormal because he’s A) seen it, 2) IS supernatural, and C) he didn’t have a normal childhood, so he didn’t hit most of those psychological milestones, so I don’t think he would “grow out” of those beliefs like most kids do. And I think he’s definitely met Bigfoot, they go drinking together sometimes.
Thomas Hewitt: another concerned boy. The first time the family sees you do anything, Luda Mae is gonna cross herself, Hoyt will think the devil’s finally come for him, Thomas is scared as fuck, and Monty just laughs and flips Hoyt off saying “they done found you motherfucker!!” Thomas will be good at taking care of you afterwards, wiping up you blood and insisting you rest while he gets you snacks and water. Actively hates when Hoyt tells you to use it to help with work on the farm or Monty treats you like a party trick. Luda is slightly terrified of you, but she sees how much Thomas cares and helps him take care of you.
After the complete shock the family gets seeing you do shit with your mind, Thomas will freak out, particularly if you passed out. Like he will run to you and kneel next to you, making crooning noises and waving for Luda (she comes, however hesitantly). He will not leave your side until you wake up, and he will get misty eyed when you come to consciousness.
Brahms Heelshire: this man-child is terrified of you. Like he will hold a cross towards you and draw a salt circle while holding a bottle of sage. He will hit every religion he can for protection lol. Once he calms down and you show him you aren’t gonna hurt him, he’ll let you explain. I think it would be a scientist that would find you at the manor, Brahms would come at him with a fire poker, you would teleki-snap the scientist’s neck, and Brahms would beat his dead corpse once you tell him everything. I think he’d be similar to Michael in that he may not understand all of the science or anatomy in question, and would do his best to care for you. He would mirror the care you show him and clean & bandage any injuries (would probably wrap your nose in bandages the first time lol).
He will be freaking out, but in a calm way if that makes sense. He will enter Nurse Mode to take care of you, but internally he’s screaming like a newborn. Absolute panic. Would try to scold you for not telling him, or for overdoing it. While y’all are cuddling later that night he’ll whisper to you that he was scared. While I think he’d be similar to Mikey, I do think Brahms may have a slightly better grasp of the seriousness/weirdness than Mr. Myers would. Might ask questions but would also be respectful of your trauma of being treated as a science experiment.
Finished!!! I tried lol. I need to catch up on Stranger Things Seasons 3-4. However, I have met Eddie Munson and I can’t tell if I want to kiss him or be him, we shall see. Thank y’all :DDDD

What I'm Watching: January 2024
New year, same monthly roundup. And off to a solid start with what can probably be summed up as Robert Englund month...
Zombie Strippers!
Tumblr media
The exclamation point is important. This movie was like sticking real diamonds on costume jewelry. Which is to say, it's exactly what it sounds like, but contained some surprising gems. But then, horror comedies are just like that. There was plenty of ridiculousness (to be expected for a movie about a zombie outbreak infecting dancers at a strip club), but I'm still impressed at how well the humor landed. I mean, they really didn't have to try that hard. But no, it was genuinely funny and had more than a few existential moments, and I loooooooooove me some existentialism. Throw in some gore and so many boobs, and there ya go. Made for a niche audience with love.
Behind The Mask: The Rise Of Leslie Vernon
Tumblr media
I need to study this movie. To be fair, you almost have to as a matter of honor, if you're a horror nerd, because there are so many goddamn references. Don't take that as me complaining, tho, because one thing about me is I'm a fucking nerd. I didn't think it was possible to get more meta than Scream without getting gimmicky, but this one pulls it off. I knew enough about the plot to know more or less where things were heading, but there was still enough of a mystery to keep me on my toes, and the twist is the kind that makes you feel proud of yourself for piecing together. Even if slasher movies aren't your thing, this is still a ton of fun.
Urban Legend
Tumblr media
I live blogged this and had a great time with it. This is another one for the "best watched with friends" list, and one I'm going to have to come back to for sure. And in case you haven't heard, I love Professor Wexler.
Cowboy Bebop
Tumblr media
What? You thought I'd watch the live action without it tripping the rewatch sensor for the anime? Besides, I've only ever seen the sub and I've heard the dub is just as good. And folks...IT IS. IT REALLY IS. I'm not quite mentally prepared for the spiral the finale will send me into, so I'm taking my time with it. But again, I'm not complaining. It looks beautiful, it sounds fantastic (THE MUSIC!!! HAVE YOU HEARD THE MUSIC!!!) and it's just so fucking cool. Joss Whedon can suck it, because Firefly can't touch this.
The Last Showing
Tumblr media
This was a fun thriller. You gotta love it when you can see the love of the genre and the art of cinema itself so clearly in a piece. Stuart reads like Stanley Kubrick if he never made it as a director, and on one hand, I wanted the poor guy to finish his movie, but on the other...bro, you can't do that.
2001 Maniacs
Tumblr media
Well, this sure was a movie that I watched. Not gonna lie, I wasn't sure I was gonna make it through this one, as it goes for the over-the-top Southern redneck stereotype that goes into caricature territory reeeeaaaaally fast and finishes it off with the usual horny douchebag mid-2000's protagonists that don't even try to make you like them much less invest in them, but once you realize where things are going, you wanna see how it plays out. I cannot emphasize enough how over the top and how horny the first half of the movie is, but the inevitable gore is so theatrical it's fun, and it has plenty of laughs once you stop taking it seriously. It's one of those where the ending recontextualizes everything leading up to it without everything hinging on the twist, which I always appreciate. And I was not a bit surprised to see Eli Roth.
Hereditary
Tumblr media
In hindsight, there were better gifs I could have used. *shudder* This was the first rewatch of the year, and honestly, it's been analyzed, raved over, and talked about much better by people who actually like it, so I don't have much to contribute. Not that I hate it, really. It is a well made, nerve-wracking, gut-wrenching movie, but it's just not for me, and that's okay. Hard to pin down exactly where they lose me (I have an inkling, but it'll take more time to discuss than I'm willing to spend here), but the stuff that works, WORKS. Some bits had me shaking. Others had me trying my hardest not to burst into tears. It's excruciating to sit through, I tip my hat to everyone involved in it, and I never want to watch it again.

Friday the 13th: Ranked
She's on Tumblr again? LONG POSTING? What is this, 2012?
Hi Tumblr. It's been a bit. But I decided it was the best place to talk unhinged shit that wouldn't make sense on other sites, so here we go again I guess. Last time I was here, I was straight. Now I'm uh...not.
ANYWAYS. Today's Friday the 13th, and it just so happens to also be OCTOBER (aka Halloween season). So y'know. Extra spooky.
I feel like there's only one REAL way to celebrate this day. To talk about the slasher of Camp Crystal Lake himself, Jason Vorhees.
Tumblr media
I've had a fascination for horror movies since my edgy years from late 2009 through...honestly most of high school (I wore fingerless bike gloves to school every day--I didn't bike to school. I was CRINJ CITY). I remember watching the major slashers like Friday the 13th and Nightmare on Elm Street, one of my most cringe moments was making a YouTube video about the 2010 reboot of Nightmare on Elm Street and talking about how good it was (15 year old me, for the record, was an idiot).
I know for a fact that I remember watching the original Friday and Friday Part 2. But I'd never seen the other TEN films in the franchise. So earlier this year, I got together with a friend and over the course of a few weekends...
We watched every Friday the 13th film that currently exists (as of posting) and ranked them.
Our Rating System
This was our first time doing a ranking for horror, so we didn't come up with a fun system at the first go around, save for an exception.
For the purposes of consistency of our lists, we're going to use the following rating system: Actually Good. These are the movies that are actually genuinely good watches, with fun characters, good writing, and good sequences. These are the best of the best.
Fun Time 🎉. The movies in this category might not be amazing, but they are still a fun time and are still pretty good watches for the type of horror we're watching.
A Movie™️ . These movies range from almost fun to not boring or bad enough to be lower on the list. We'll explain these as we go.
Why? 🤷. There are movies that take things into confusing territories and make things more convoluted for one reason or another. If it makes us say "Why?" then it's here. No 🙅. These are the worst ones--reasoning will explain.
Caveats
I think it's important to note that while my friend and I love watching horror, we don't think the Friday the 13th franchise is particularly scary. But we were interested becuase the 80s slashers are known to be just fun, and that entices me more than anything. So while these aren't scary when you compare them to modern horror like Barbarian, we were looking for fun times.
Also, should go without saying, but these are subjective opinions.
So with that out of the way...let's do this in order from top to bottom.
Actually Good
Jason Lives! Friday the 13th Part VI
Tumblr media
If you watch any of the Friday the 13th movies, make it this one. Part VI is not just a solid slasher movie with great production values, but it's also just a good movie in general.
Tommy Jarvis and Megan are the best duo protagonists we have, with great chemistry. The group of teens we have here are also just fun to watch. People are mostly likelable!
Also the guy who went on to be the voice for Disney's TARZAN is in this movie. Neat.
There's also a ton of great references to other Horror Media because Director Tom McGloughlin is a damn nerd and we LOVE IT. Watch the Dead Meat Kill Count on these. Ya learn a lot.
Friday the 13th Part II
Tumblr media
So when it comes to the original canon (aka up through Part IV), this film is the strongest out of all of them. Mostly because of the fact that even though Jason Vorhees doesn't have his iconic hockey mask (which he gets in Part III), the film has straight up the best group of camp counselors/teens in the whole franchise. They're fleshed out more, more sympathetic, and it's just fun.
The only real reason this doesn't top the list is that Part VI is just a better movie overall. There are some weird shot choices, and the cold open is weird and has no pacing.
A Fun Time 🎉
Jason X
Tumblr media
Ok, so hear me out. I know the conceit of this movie is WEIRD. It's literally Jason in SPACE. This should be ridicously bad, right?
It's absolutely wild, but the thing about this movie is that it FULLY commits to the crazy concept and it honestly just works. It truly has no right to be as good as it is.
It's not a masterpiece, and it's still objectively wild, but it's a good time.
Friday the 13th (the Original)
Tumblr media
It feels weird that the original Friday the 13th movie is in this team, but while this movie is still very good, and still a fun time with great iconic kills; it's still a little anticlimatic and the other films have stronger thru-lines.
Still a good movie, and one that I'd argue that you should still watch because it's the original and iconic, but it's not the best one.
Friday the 13th (2009 Reboot)
Tumblr media
So I remember as an edgy teen harping on this movie for being bad (had I seen it? No. Did it matter? Also no). But this is actually a VERY strong reboot. While it doesn't entirely meet the bar of the other movies thus far, it's a fun time that does act as a "best of" of the early films in the franchise.
The characters are also kinda fun.
A Movie™️
Friday the 13th: The Final Chapter (Part IV)
Tumblr media
This is the technically the end of the main story arc of Jason Vorhees--he does die here. Every movie from this point on has a Zombified Jason.
Part IV is higher than the other movies on this list mostly because of the kills themselves--someone gets stabbed while they're holding a banana -- it's wild.
Everything else is kinda meh. Most of the characters here are kinda sleezy and high key horny af, and they're all kind sex pest energy. They kind of suck.
Friday the 13th Part IV: A New Beginning
Tumblr media
So Jason isn't in this movie, at all. There's someone else imitating Jason
It's aggressively sleezy and almost pornographic, which isn't
The one main positive this movie has is that it has some very solid characters that very much feel more interesting than most of the characters in the franchise. The kills aren't as good as Part IV, but it's still fun.
Freddy vs. Jason
Tumblr media
So I was expecting this movie to be a lot better than it was (for what its worth, it's one of the better Nightmare on Elm Street Movies). It's fine. Not overly worth writing home about per se.
Friday the 13th Part III
Tumblr media
So this is an important film that brings us the iconic hockey mask and was also in 3D (because we love gimmicks). Unfortunately, this movie recycles a few kills and the characters are way more one dimensional, and annoying, and there's also some fun problematic racism thrown in.
Why? 🤷
Friday the 13th Part VII: The New Blood
Tumblr media
This was one of the first movies in the Friday the 13th franchise that BAFFLED me and my friend when watching. According to Dead Meat, they tried to reach out to New Line about doing someting with Nightmare on Elm Street; they refused. So they went, "Ok but what if Jason vs. Carrie White? This slasher franchise needs telekinesis."
Part VII tries to be both a Friday the 13th film and a Carrie film at the same time. It fails at being good versions of both. The teens are forgettable; the telekenetic plotline is interesting but that's kinda not really the point of Friday the 13th, so it's just baffling.
Jason Goes to Hell: The Final Friday (Part IX)
Tumblr media
Woof. This one is real rough.
This was a movie we kept pausing to see how long we had so we can say "We have NO IDEA WHAT IS HAPPENING".
The movie tries to streamline things but make things more complicated.
The effects are cool, the kills are ok, and the characters are fine. But the structure is bad.
No 🙅
Friday the 13th Part VIII: Jason Takes Manhattan
Tumblr media
Out of all of the Friday movies, this one is straight up bad. All of the characters are terrible and have no redeeming qualities. Half the movie doesn't take place in Manhattan, and once there, there's also a fun scene that's essentially SA and it's straight up upsetting. When you manage to make Jason look like a good guy, you know you've got a bad movie.
Final Thoughts
I'll go on record and say that Friday the 13th has more good movies than bad ones in my opinion. You don't watch these movies to be scared, you watch them to have a good time.
So go have fun and watch these movies!

i was talking abt this in the tags but fuck it yall are gonna be subject to my rambling. seeing anything remotely gory get labelled as "torture porn" is just like. it gets my blood boiling. setting aside people who think the whole horror genre is like that, genuinely and without any humorous intent, i humbly think you are wrong if you judge even one movie like this. you can find it gross, you can not like it, but you do not get to label the 1h30m 1983 slasher movie with a solid 10 uncut minutes of on-screen gore as Less Artistically Valid than the stuff you like, no matter how Deep and Rich and Intricate it is. thank you
